Wayne County

Wayne County lies within the colorful Colorado Plateau province. Much of the beautiful Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Parks, with their rock formations, cliffs, canyons, and valleys, lies in the county.

wayne county tourism utah

West of the desert landscape of Capitol Reef, Boulder Mountain and Thousand Lakes Mountain rise up into forests and high alpine country.

East of Capitol Reef to Hanksville the land is broken by mesas, badlands, and bentonite clay hills.

The life-giving Fremont River flows south through the county and then east to join the Dirty Devil, which flows into the Colorado River.

First Peoples

Scientists have identified the remains of extinct Pleistocene species such as the sloth, horse, mammoth, bison, and camel in Wayne County. Paleoindian people may have hunted these animals here.

wayne county tourism utah

Archaic sites date back to 6300 BC. These ancient people left behind artifacts, including split-twig figurines (little animals made from twigs) at Cowboy Cave. They painted haunting pictographs on the canyon walls in Horseshoe (Barrier) Canyon, and the Maze section of Canyonlands.

wayne county tourism utah

Beginning about 2,000 years ago, the Fremont people used this land. It was in this area that anthropologists first recognized the Fremont culture—and that it was different from Ancestral Puebloan culture. In the area of the Fremont River, archaeologists found unique baskets, a unique kind of moccasin, little clay figurines, unique rock art, and thin gray pottery.

A few Euro American exploring parties passed through Wayne County, including John C. Fremont, Mormons, and John Wesley Powell. Almon Thompson, working for the Powell Survey, spent two years making the first map of southern Utah and the Green and Colorado river canyons, including the future Wayne County.

wayne county tourism utah

Grove Karl Gilbert, with the same expedition, studied the geology of the Henry Mountains, just over the border in Garfield county. He traveled through and described Wayne County on his way to the mountains.

People in search of new land for grazing and farming began coming to the area in the 1870s. They settled on parcels of land near mountains or on rivers, where they could get water. Many filed on homesteads in order to get land from the federal government for free.

wayne county tourism utah

Farmers raised grain, alfalfa, potatoes, cattle, sheep, and chickens, among other things. At Fruita, a town that was inside what is now Capitol Reef National Park, the settlers planted fruit trees, and they peddled the fruit to surrounding towns. Later, some people made whiskey, which they sold to cowboys and miners.

They founded towns, built meetinghouses that also served as schools and community centers, planted trees, and helped each other.

Near Bicknell, Peter Nielson built a fine gristmill that you can still see on the Fremont River. Isaac Riddle and his sons built a lumber mill near Teasdale in Boulder Canyon. Other sawmills went up in the county, with good timber coming from Boulder Mountain and Thousand Lakes Mountain.

Wayne County’s towns were very isolated, and most people lived simply. Some of the towns didn’t survive.

wayne county tourism utah

Raising livestock is the oldest and most important industry in Wayne County. Beef cattle produce the most income, but dairy cows, sheep, and poultry have all contributed to the local economy in the past.

Getting cattle to market took some doing. Before good roads and trucks, cowboys and sheepherders had to herd their animals 100 miles north to the railroad at Nephi or, later, to a railroad in Sevier County.

When the government created national forests in the early 20th century, it began to control the numbers of animals grazing in the forests. Also, cattle rustling (often by the notorious Robbers Roost gang) threatened ranchers until the late 1890s.

The lumber industry and, in more recent years, tourism also provide income for some residents. Uranium has been mined, and tar sands, another-energy-related resource, await development. The state operates two fish hatcheries in Wayne.

wayne county tourism utah

During the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) provided funds to build a county courthouse in Loa. Before this, county officials had met in private homes or rented quarters. Later, they converted a store into office space.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), another federal program during the Depression, operated three camps in the county. The CCC built roads, campgrounds, and small water projects.

Roads have been important—and hard to build—from the beginning. Paved highways now make it easy for tourists to drive to many scenic attractions and give residents easy access to the stores, medical clinics, and other services in Richfield.

This is Torrey Utah’s official website. Here you will find information about our town and its government. You will also find links to town resources and services for our residents as well as information for visitors.

Torrey is located on Utah State Route 24 in Wayne County, Utah. Torrey is the gateway community for Capitol Reef National Park -- just eight miles to the east.

The town was established in the 1880s by Mormon settlers, and was initially known as Youngtown, after John William Young; it is generally held to be named after Jay L. Torrey from Pittsfield, Illinois. Torrey was a member of the Wyoming legislature, who, upon the advent of the Spanish-American War, achieved national attention by proposing the creation of what became three volunteer cavalry regiments, made up of cowboys and stockmen. Torrey was commissioned Colonel of the 2nd Regiment, the "Rocky Mountain Riders"; the 1st Regiment, the only regiment to see action, was better known as the Rough Riders.

Our guide Mason was friendly and informative and very engaging with our young kids (ages 8 & 5). First time, it was with my husband 2 years ago and this time with my sister. We had an amazing tour. We saw everything we wanted (and even much more!). We loved it. Mason was so nice, friendly, very passionate about his work as a tour guide and places he showed us. He was very accommodating with what we needed as a visitor. If we needed to spend longer time for pictures, he would stop the car, let us get out, always making sure we were able to have the time needed. He also knows a lot about the area, the history and geology! It was fascinating! Thank you so much for this experience! I will sure come back to discover more! Read more Written April 1, 2024

  • Donna H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Capital Reef Must Do! Just returned from 3 weeks exploring the national parks of AZ/UT. Have to give a big shout out and thanks to Sam, our tour guide, on our Jeep adventure exploring Capital Reef. This tour exceeded our expectations and was our favorite. Thoroughly enjoyed our time with Sam, so personable, interesting and a great guide. We absolutely saw things we did not anticipate (I could elaborate but that would spoil your fun) and the tour was overall a learning experience and just fun! I would not hesitate to book with Sleeping Rainbow and if you get Sam, consider that a bonus!! Thanks for making our trip special! Read more Written October 12, 2023

Amazing experience with blankets and hot chocolate. Grace his assistant was amazing helping us all see amazing stars, planets and galaxies. So entertaining with stories to back up the amazing constellations. Read more Written October 4, 2023
  • mikedynon 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Cathedral Valley is stunning We took this tour as a way to see sights that we couldn't get to on our own, and we were not disappointed. The off-road route was bumpy but not uncomfortable. Our guide Andrew was knowledgeable about Capitol Reef's history and geology, answering all of our questions. He helped us by taking our photos at all the most scenic spots. We highly recommend this tour. Read more Written September 19, 2023
  • Awaken-Lindsey 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME! Great for groups, families, all ages! We booked a huge group of 43 people to do s'mores and stargazing at Cougar Ridge with Sleeping Rainbow and it was a highlight of our weekend! Mason is so knowledgable and willing to take time to show us everything we wanted to see and more! I HIGHLY recommend doing a stargazing tour here - you can't beat the Certified Dark Sky! • W4355OUsharonm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles THE way to see Capitol Reef Since we are not as mobile as we used to be and tend to need restrooms more often too, we were a bit concerned that 4-wheeling for 5-7 hours would be beyond our comfort level, but this was absolutely the way to go. Mason, our guide and the owner of Sleeping Rainbow Adventures, was very safety conscious, knowledgeable about so many things, enthusiastic, accommodating, and the best listener. He used to work for the NPS, so he had lots of training and knowledge. It was obvious that he loves his job and has a deep connection to Capitol Reef. His flexibility made us feel so comfortable. Mason thought of everything from water and snacks to phone chargers, to the lighting and clean windows for photography as well as our physical and psychological comfort. He knows the park so well and has stories of the changes he himself has witnessed as well as cultural, historical, geological, climatic, and ecological changes. We wish we could take him with us to all the National and State Parks, so we could see what most people don’t. Capitol Reef, of all the Mighty 5, requires more than just Rt 24 to truly appreciate the vastness, diversity, and amazing rock and land formations. Our favorite was Glass Mountain followed closely by the Bentonite Hills. If you want to see the secrets of Capitol Reef, go with this company in a beautiful, enclosed Jeep with climate control. You’ll get very individual service and attention tailored to your interests and abilities. We feel like we made a friend, and we are grateful for the personalized experience we got. • patsJ2581XG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles One of the Best Experiences Ever! This was a great adventure. It was just my friend and I along with our guide Mason and his brother Zack. Mason was a wealth of knowledge and we learned so much about the history of the area, the geology, plants, and had great conversation about many things. We would have never seen Glass Mountain, the Temples of the Sun and Moon, or the Cathedral Valley without the tour and their expertise. Both men were so personable and gracious! They helped these two limited mobility women into the jeeps and assisted us in many ways! Incredible experience and I even gave their business information we met later at Bryce Canyon! Thanks for the adventure! Read more Written September 16, 2023

  • MargieZMazurek 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Do it! We did the Capitol Reef Stargazing experience with Mason and are so happy we decided to do this (kind of on a whim!). Mason was super knowledgeable and hospitable. He showed us so many planets and constellations and used both a digital and analog telescope to contrast our views. He shared SO much information about the mythological stories behind the stars and planets, and astronomy in general, and showed us things we never even knew existed. He also sent us photos afterwards, as remembrances of the evening, which was super appreciated. The only thing I would change next time around would be to time our trip so that it's during the new moon and we could see even more. Truly a unique experience and a highlight of our time in Torrey. • dmsch 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best way to see Cathedral Valley Wonderful day, incredible formations! Saw things we'd never see otherwise, so glad we decided to do this tour. Our guide Katie was clearly having fun driving the Jeep around the back-country while sharing so much interesting information about the formations and history of the area with my mom and I. She really made a fun day into an amazing day for us. We ran out of synonyms for 'Wow' to respond to all the cool sites we saw. Read more Written July 3, 2023
