Wicked

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be very well-versed in the world of musical theatre, chances are you will have heard of Wicked. Inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, which was published in 1995, it premiered on Broadway on October 30th, 2003, after a successful run in San Francisco earlier in the year. The original Broadway cast was made up of musical legends: Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Idina Menzel – of Frozen fame – starring as Elphaba.

Wicked is a Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, itself a retelling of the classic 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Wizard of Oz.

One of the reasons that Wicked is so popular is the sheer scale of its production. It has been at the  Gershwin Theatre  on West 51st Street in the Paramount Plaza building in midtown Manhattan since its Broadway debut in 2003. The theatre has the largest seating capacity on Broadway with almost two thousand seats, and Wicked is regularly sold out thanks to its international reputation as one of the top shows to see in NYC. The theatre was designed in an art nouveau style by Ralph Alswang and opened in 1972 as the Uris Theatre before being renamed to honor the Gershwins in 1983. The set is bold, bright – and very, very green.

Gershwin-Theater-stage

Wicked is a retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum, from the point of view of the witches who live in the Land of Oz. It follows Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, later known as Glinda the Good Witch, and tells the story of how they met at school, their initial rivalry and dislike of each other, and their eventual friendship before Elphaba’s fall from grace. Although Elphaba and Galinda have a love interest in common, Fiyero, the musical is more interested in themes of friendship, what being ‘wicked’ really means, and understanding other people’s perspectives and motivations.

Wicked The Musical

The original cast album won a  Grammy Award  and was nominated for ten  Tony Awards , eventually winning three, including Best Actress for Menzel. Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz bought the rights to Maguire’s novel in 1998; although it isn’t an entirely faithful adaptation, Schwartz collaborated with writer  Winnie Holzman  to create a plot that worked onstage. The musical developed through a series of readings with Chenoweth alongside Stephanie J Block as Elphaba. Menzel joined the production in 2000 along with Joe Mantello as director. Wicked is one of Broadway’s most beloved productions: its scope is epic and its production is huge, glittering, and mesmerizing, but more than that, it is a story that is at its heart about love, truth, and friendship – and those are qualities that audiences will always respond to.

Wicked On Broadway

The first act begins as the people of Oz rejoice after the death of Elphaba as Glinda the Good Witch takes center stage. Then the show moves back in time to depict Elphaba’s birth, her relationship with her disabled sister Nessarose and her time at school with Galinda, where they were roommates and rivals. Elphaba’s magical talent is discovered, Prince Fiyero appears, and Galinda and Elphaba become friends before traveling together to meet the Wizard of Oz. There, they discover corruption on an epic scale, and Elphaba runs away after swearing to take her revenge on the Wizard. In the second act, we discover she has been nicknamed the Wicked Witch of the West, while Galinda – now Glinda – has been placed in public opposition to her. When Dorothy reaches the land of Oz, things get even more complicated…

Wicked Acts

Wicked is packed with catchy melodies and onstage antics, but it is hard to argue that the heart of the story lies with the development of the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, from What Is This Feeling? too Popular to their last duet, For Good, arguably the most tear-jerking and emotional part of the entire show. The musical is full of spectacle, color, vibrant costumes, and funny lines, but the end of the first act is probably the most visually stunning as Elphaba sings Defying Gravity, the most famous song in the show, and rises slowly into the air. The high notes will send a shiver down your spine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Like The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is the definition of family-friendly. But like the classic 1939 movie, younger children may find it too long or be frightened by the show's flying monkeys, allusions to offstage violence and death of a character. Most children over eight, however, will be delighted by the world of Wicked .

Pantages Theatre

In the heart of Hollywood, on Hollywood Boulevard, right down the block from Vine Street, stands the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. It's a fitting location: The Pantages has become one of the greatest landmarks of Hollywood, signifying both the glorious past and adventuresome future of the world's entertainment capital.

The Hollywood Pantages has a history as grand and diverse as the stage and screen fare which audiences have flocked to enjoy there for half a century. These days it's one of Los Angeles' leading homes of legitimate theatre (the five highest-grossing weeks in L.A.'s theatrical history were all shows at the Pantages) and a favorite "location" for tv shows, movies and music videos. In the past, it has been a movie house, with live vaudeville acts between features as well as the site of many gala premieres and "spectaculars." For ten years the Hollywood Pantages Theatre was the home of the glittering Academy Awards Presentations.

While the use of the Hollywood Pantages Theatre may have changed over the years, the theatre does not appear all that different today. After several touch-ups over the years, the Hollywood Boulevard showplace was renovated at the turn of the 21st century to recapture its 1930 look and luxury. When the theatre reopened in September 2000, some 300 people had repainted nearly every inch of the theatre, restored its outer lobby and missing chandeliers, refurbished its walls and prepared it for the new century.

Idina Menzel poses on the red carpet.

The Queen of Broadway is taking her talents far and wide this summer.

From July through August, Tony-winning actress and “Frozen” star Idina Menzel will swoop into theaters and performing arts centers all over North America as part of her 20-concert ‘Take Me Or Leave Me Tour.’

And, while she won’t technically bring the show to Broadway, Menzel is going to get awfully close when she headlines at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 15.

“Super personal, intimate, lots of laughs, lots of stories, lots of great new music, old music,” the 52-year-old “Wicked” star shared, describing the show on Instagram .

For those that can’t wait to witness Menzel’s iconic mezzo-soprano vocals live — and maybe sing along to “Let It Go” — tickets for all shows can be yours as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Idina Menzel tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Idina Menzel set list

On Nov. 18, 2018, Menzel headlined at Madison Square Garden.

While we can’t guarantee what she’ll bring to the stage at these intimate gigs — although she teased old and new music — here’s a look at what she performed at MSG way back when, courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “Queen of Swords” 02.) “The Wizard and I” (Stephen Schwartz cover) 03.) “Don’t Rain on My Parade” (Jule Styne cover) 04.) “Dear Prudence” (Beatles cover)

05.) “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” 06.) “Extraordinary” 07.) “I Melt With You” (Modern English cover) 08.) “Let It Go” (Kristen Anderson‐Lopez & Robert Lopez cover) 09.) “Over the Moon” 10.) “Take Me or Leave Me” (Jonathan Larson cover) 11.) “Finale B (No Day But Today)” (Jonathan Larson cover) 12.) “For Good” (Stephen Schwartz cover) 13.) “Defying Gravity” (Stephen Schwartz cover)

Idina Menzel new music

Last year, Menzel released her seventh studio album “Drama Queen.”

Comprised of ten tracks, Menzel embraces disco and delivers a half hour of essential synth pop.

While there isn’t a dud in the bunch, we’d recommend the danceable “Dramatic,” funky “Make Me Hate Me” and anthemic “Funny Kind Of Lonely.”

Still, the second track “Beast” is the one to look out for; it’s perfect for the club, spin class or a shower singalong.

Want to check it out for yourself?

You can listen to “Drama Queen” here .

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel is heading back out on the road.

The superstar announced her Take Me or Leave Me Tour exclusively via Billboard on Tuesday (April 23), marking her first tour in nearly eight years. “I was really missing the connection with my fans,” she tells Billboard of the decision to tour again. “I have my new musical Redwood at La Jolla Playhouse that I’m passionate about, and it’s been occupying me. I thought, if that goes through another iteration, I wanted to make sure I got my time with my fans from a personal perspective as opposed to through a character.”

The beloved actress’ tour will feature a career-spanning setlist of hits, which she’s currently putting together and stays “up all night thinking about,” and she promises an “eclectic” mix of hits from her own albums and jazz standards as well as musicals she’s performed in like Wicked , Rent and, of course, Frozen . “I often wrestle with the fact that I often assume that people will be bored if I sing the same songs over and over, like ‘Let It Go’ or ‘Defying Gravity,'” she shares. “I’m always trying to rewrite things, discover or cover new songs, reinterpret them and then I always get this feedback of ‘No, we want to hear these songs!’ I’m trying to strike a balance between performing songs the way I think my audience would want to hear them and feeling like, as an artist, that I’m growing and singing the songs in a way that their lyrics resonate with me. I juggle it and then I sit with my band and we play with it and assess it and sort of see what kind of floats to the top.”

Artist presale tickets for Menzel’s tour as well as VIP packages will be available starting on Wednesday (April 24) at 10 a.m. local time. General on-sale for tickets begins Friday (April 26) at 10 a.m. local time. See the full list of dates below, and check out the venues and ticket information here .

Broadway superstar coming to Alabama, singing classics from ‘Wicked,’ ‘Rent,’ ‘Frozen’

You know her as a Broadway star famed for her work in “Wicked,” “Rent” and other musicals. Your kids love her as the voice of Elsa in the “Frozen” franchise. Maybe you’ve seen her on television in “Glee,” or in movies such as “Enchanted” and “Disenchanted.” And yes, there was the time John Travolta messed up her name at the 2014 Oscars ceremony.

Idina Menzel , the acclaimed singer and actress, is coming to Alabama this summer, as part of her “Take Me or Leave Me Tour.” It’s a rare concert here for Menzel, set for Aug. 6 at the Gogue Performing Arts Center in Auburn, in the center’s Woltosz Theatre. Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert are $125 plus service charges, on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, via the Gogue Center website .

Three VIP packages are available for the Auburn show, priced at $125, $225 and $349. Various perks are included in the packages, such as photos, commemorative merchandise, a Q&A with Menzel, a group photo with her and an “intimate pre-show performance” with the star. The $349 package includes a ticket with seating in the first 10 rows of the theatre. The other packages don’t include a ticket to the show, just the additional perks.

A fan presale is underway, and an access code for that can be found on Menzel’s website .

Menzel, 52, has announced 21 dates for her 2024 tour, starting on July 19 and ending on Aug. 18. The Auburn show is the only stop she’ll make in Alabama. Menzel hasn’t performed often in the state, but she did make a visit to Birmingham in August 2017, appearing at the BJCC Concert Hall.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Idina Menzel (@idinamenzel)

Menzel, a mezzo-soprano, won a 2004 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Elphaba in “Wicked.” She also earned Tony nominations for her work in “Rent” and “If/Then.” Menzel has seven studio albums to her credit, as well, including 2023′s “Drama Queen.”

Menzel has voiced the character of Elsa in two “Frozen” movies — that’s her powering through the anthem “Let It Go” — and she’ll perform again in “Frozen III,” reportedly set for release in 2026. She received a Disney Legend Award in 2022 , a top honor from the Walt Disney Co.

Menzel promises a career-spanning setlist on her summer tour, including jazz standards, album tracks and songs from milestones such as “Wicked,” “Rent” and “Frozen.”

“I often wrestle with the fact that I often assume that people will be bored if I sing the same songs over and over, like ‘Let It Go’ or ‘Defying Gravity,’” Menzel said in a recent interview with Billboard .

The name of her tour, of course, is a reference to the song “Take Me or Leave Me” from “Rent.” Menzel made her Broadway debut in the musical in 1996, earning fame for her role as Maureen Johnson.
