Where is Tom Cruise? Why the 'Top Gun' star skipped the 2023 Oscars

Despite "Top Gun: Maverick" being nominated for six honors, including best picture, the film's star Tom Cruise was not in attendance for the Academy Awards on March 12 in Hollywood.

His absence from the iconic Dolby Theatre on Sunday did not go unnoticed by host Jimmy Kimmel, who called out both Cruise and "Avatar" director James Cameron for skipping the event during his lengthy monologue at the beginning of the broadcast.

After quipping that Cameron might have skipped the ceremony after not being nominated for best director, Kimmel then launched into Cruise.

"Everyone loved 'Top Gun' I mean, everyone." Kimmel said. "Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene? ... Hubba hubba!"

"Tom Cruise and James Cameron didn't show up tonight. The two guys who insisted we go to the theater didn't come to the theater."

Kimmel went on to joke that Cruise might actually be in the theater dressed as actor Judd Hirsch in a "Mission Impossible" mask. As the camera panned to Hirsch, the "Fabelmans" star pantomimed pulling his face off like a mask.

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun.

A spokesperson for Cruise confirmed to People that the actor had to miss the awards ceremony because he is filming "Mission: Impossible 8" overseas. Entertainment Tonight reports that if "Top Gun" wins best picture, producer Jerry Bruckheimer will accept the award.

The film, which is a sequel to the original "Top Gun" released in 1986, was also nominated for best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best original song, best visual effects and best sound.

Hosted by  Jimmy Kimmel for the third time , the  2023 Oscars  are broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, with the  red carpet starting earlier . The 2023 Oscars are  available to watch on ABC  and various streaming platforms.

Leading the list of nominees  include “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The  list of performers and presenters  includes Rihanna, following her  Super Bowl halftime show , and the viral  Telegu-language hit “Naatu Naatu .”

Why Tom Cruise Wasn't At the Oscars

The Top Gun: Maverick star didn't turn up for the big awards night, despite the film's multiple nominations.

the 34th annual producers guild awards show

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun , Top Gun: Maverick , became a must-watch film in 2022. But while the blockbuster garnered five Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture, along with Best Adapted Screenplay, sound and film editing, visual effects and Best Original Song, one major player was missing from the festivities tonight: the franchise's star, Tom Cruise.

Despite starring in both the original film, as well as the long-anticipated sequel, Cruise did not make an appearance on the red carpet at the 2023 Oscars tonight. Though the film became an awards show darling, Cruise himself did not receive any Academy Award nominations for his performance. Nonetheless, it was expected by many that the star would turn up for any potential wins for the film.

On Sunday, however, a representative for Cruise told People that Cruise would not be in attendance on the big night due to scheduling obligations for Cruise's currently in the works sequel known as Mission Impossible 8 . According to the publication, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is slated to accept the award if Top Gun: Maverick recieves the Best Picture Nomination

Oscars 2023: The 95th Academy Awards

By Tori B. Powell, Mike Hayes, Matt Meyer and Seán Federico O'Murchú, CNN

Why Tom Cruise and James Cameron aren't at the Oscars

From CNN"s Lisa Respers France

Tom Cruise attends the Oscars nominees luncheon on February 13.

Two of the people being credited with getting audiences back in the theater apparently have skipped the biggest night that celebrates movies.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel mentioned in his opening monologue that both Tom Cruise and James Cameron were not in attendance, though he joked that perhaps Cruise was there, dressed as nominee Judd Hirsch.

While Cruise's blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" is nominated for best film, Deadline reported the star was skipping the show because of work.

Meanwhile, Kimmel mentioned there was some speculation that Cameron sat this one out because he had not been nominated in the directing category for "Avatar: The Way of Water," which is also nominated for best film.

"Avatar" producer Jon Landau said on the red carpet (which was really champagne-colored ) that Cameron was not coming for “personal reasons."

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio" wins the award for best animated feature

“Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio”

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio" took home the Academy Award for best animated feature. It was the first award announced of the night.

"Animation is ready to be taken to the next step," Del Toro said while accepting the award. "We are all ready for it. Please help us. Keep animation in the conversation."

The filmmaker, who used stop-motion animation to create the latest "Pinocchio" adaptation, went on to thank his family and Netflix.

Jimmy Kimmel jokes he's protecting himself this year after last year's slap

From CNN's Marianne Garvey

Host Jimmy Kimmel speaks onstage.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel jokes that if any audience member wants to incite violence or "get jiggy with it," in a reference to Will Smith's song, "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," he's got backup.

Kimmel joked that they would have to get through Michelle Yeoh, Michael B. Jordan, Steven Spielberg and many others to get to him on stage.

Background: During 2022’s ceremony, Smith walked on stage at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock, who was presenting at the time, after he made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head.

Smith  later apologized , but The Academy sanctioned the actor by  banning him from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.

Jimmy Kimmel says this year "the world finally got out of the house" to see movies in the theater

Host Jimmy Kimmel speaks onstage.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel opened the show by declaring this the year "when the world finally got out of the house" to see the nominated films the way they were intended to be seen: in a theater.

The host entered the stage for his opening monologue via parachute, in a reference to his opening "Top Gun" skit , cracked a joke about adjusting his "danger zone" and teased Nicole Kidman for her viral AMC Theatres campaign .

Kimmel noted there are 16 first-time nominees at this year's Oscars.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel's "Top Gun" call sign is Meatball

Jimmy Kimmel arrives by parachute to host the Academy Awards.

Jimmy Kimmel first appeared at the 95th Oscars ceremony in a skit where he pretended to be in the "Top Gun" movie franchise.

Sitting behind Tom Cruise in a fighter jet, he pulls off a helmet labeled with the call sign "Meatball." Cruise advised him to eject from the plane, then Kimmel dropped on to the stage via parachute.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is nominated in several categories this evening.

The 2023 Oscars are underway

Jimmy Kimmel opens the show.

The 95th Academy Awards have begun at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the event for a third time.

It's time to see which of Hollywood's biggest stars take home the honors.

Photos: “Everything Everywhere All at Once” on the red carpet

From CNN Style’s Stephy Chung

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads the Oscars with 11 nominations. And the genre-defying movie’s cast turned up in style.

Michelle Yeoh was among the night’s best-dressed celebrities in a white-feathered Dior gown, while James Hong arrived on the champagne-colored carpet wearing one of the night’s boldest accessory: a blue bowtie adorned with — in a nod to the film — a pair of googly eyes.

Tom Cruise Will Not Attend Oscars 2023 After Previously Appearing at Nominees Luncheon

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Monica Schipper/WireImage Tom Cruise at the 95th Annual Oscars Nominees Luncheon on February 13, 2023

Tom Cruise will not be attending the Oscars 2023 ceremony.

The Top Gun: Maverick star, 60, is skipping the annual awards show , being held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, despite his film being up for six honors, including Best Picture.

A rep for Cruise confirms to PEOPLE that his absence is because he is currently filming Mission: Impossible 8 overseas. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer will accept the award for Best Picture should Maverick emerge victorious, Entertainment Tonight reports.

The follow-up to 1986's Top Gun is also nominated in the categories of Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

Additionally, Lady Gaga is set to perform the nominated song, "Hold My Hand."

Cruise's absence comes as a bit of a surprise, considering his attendance the  Oscars nominees luncheon  at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles last month.

In a video that circulated on social media at the time, Steven Spielberg could be seen telling Cruise he "saved Hollywood's ass"  with  Top Gun: Maverick , which claimed the spot as the highest-grossing movie of 2022 in the United States.

The legendary director, 76, added that Cruise "might have saved theatrical distribution" entirely with the long-awaited sequel to his hit '80s action flick.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Tuesday that Cruise would be at Sunday's ceremony , and he was asked whether he would joke about the actor as hosts of other awards shows this season have.

"No, I mean, listen, the reason that Tom Cruise is being embraced by the movie industry is that, I don't know if he saved [movies], but he definitely gave them the Heimlich maneuver," said Kimmel, 55.

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible 8 writer-director Christopher McQuarrie announced the exciting news on Friday that Hannah Waddingham had joined the cast of the upcoming franchise film.

In the photo shared by McQuarrie, 54, Waddingham appeared to be in character as she sternly looked into the distance, wearing a tan cap in front of what looked like a communication center.

Waddingham, 48, is best known for her role as Rebecca Welton in  Ted Lasso , for which she  won the Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series  in 2021. She also starred in the 2022 sequel  Hocus Pocus 2 .

Mission Impossible: 8  — also known as the second part of  Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning  — has been filming since July 2022, long before the seventh  Mission: Impossible  movie's upcoming July 2023 release date.

The Oscars air live on ABC on Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET.

Why Wasn't Tom Cruise At the 2023 Oscars?

I'll give Hollywood an impossible mission: get Tom Cruise to show up at your awards show.

preview for What to Know About "Top Gun: Maverick"

It turns out that Cruise is too busy filming Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning, Part II in the UK , Entertainment Tonight reports . He's doing what he loves, folks—making movies for us. Cruise previously teased his upcoming Mission Impossible stunt where he jumps a motorcycle off of a cliff . Here's hoping he tries to blast into space next. Next time the man is up for more trophies, I'll give Hollywood an impossible mission: get Tom Cruise to show up at your awards show.

Still, that doesn't mean the Cruise jokes stopped at the 95th Academy Awards. "Everyone loved Top Gun , everyone," Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel joked at the beginning of the show. "Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene? L. Ron Hubba Hubba!” Scientology bits! A classic Hollywood gag. "Tom (Cruise) and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight," Kimmel continued, after parachuting into the venue as part of a Top Gun skit. "The two guys who insisted we go to the theater, did not show up at the theater." I'm sure some folks at home were wondering if jokes like these were the real reason Cruise didn't show up tonight. Either way, Cruise certainly isn't feeling down. Top Gun: Maverick received six nominations at the Oscars tonight, including Best Original Song, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture.

He’s gone back to work — you will soon be seeing stuff from him shooting on a carrier in Sicily and he’s now back in the UK — and if Top Gun manages to pull off an upset, Jerry Bruckheimer will have to go up and take the bows, even though Cruise is one of the producers.

Even though the talk of Hollywood this week is whether all the post-pandemic momentum will screech to a halt because of a writer’s strike — and clearly a reckoning needs to be had over payday and residual changes largely due to streaming — Cruise is poised to give the box office a second jolt with the July 14 release of Mission: Impossible —Dead Reckoning Part One. He and director Christopher McQuarrie are racing to finish part two of that huge saga, with Paramount already dating the film for June 28, 2024.

Tom Cruise will be absent from the 2023 Oscars even though Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for Best Picture.

The Hollywood star was set to miss the movie industry’s biggest night on Sunday as he is shooting Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part II in the UK, according to ET .

Cruise has never won an Oscar and although he was not nominated for Best Actor, the Best Picture award would be his first.

If the movie does take home the award, producer Jerry Bruckheimer will accept it , although Everywhere All At Once remains the favourite to win.

Cruise’s movie is also nominated for Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Film Editing, Sound, Music (Original Song) and Visual Effects.

Glen Powell, who plays Lt Jake “Hangman” Seresin in the movie also won’t be at the awards ceremony tonight.

Meanwhile, Glenn Close had to withdraw from presenting at the awards because of a positive Covid test.

The 75-year-old actress had been due to present alongside Air Force One co-star Harrison Ford, 80.

“Yes, she has Covid, and she is of course required to bow out. She was very much looking forward to taking part,” a representative for Close told People .

Close, is an eight-time Academy Award nominee, while Ford has been nominated once.

Jame Cameron, the director of Avatar: The Way of Water, was also not present for the show.

“You know a show is too long when even Jim Cameron won’t sit through it” joked host Jimmy Kimmel during his monologue as he pointed out Cameron was not nominated for Best Director.

“How does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed Avatar ? What do they think he is, a woman?”

“Tom and James Cameron didn’t show up, the two guys who insisted we go to the theatre are not in the theatre,” he joked.

Cameron’s co-producer, Jon Landau, told The New York Times that the director has missed the ceremony for “personal reasons.”

Will Smith, who won Best Actor last year, is obviously not attending the event after his infamous slap of presenter Chris Rock in 2022.

Smith hit Rock on stage after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences banned Smith from any Academy event for the next 10 years and Smith also pre-emptively resigned from the Academy.

Is Tom Cruise at the 2023 Oscars?

By cody schultz | mar 12, 2023.

Tom Cruise is one of the most recognizable action stars in Hollywood and often a highlight for many fans when he takes to the red carpet. While his looks might not always be the most flashy, Cruise has long been a staple on the red carpet during award seasons due to the fact that he’s been attached to many acclaimed films over the years including this year’s Best Picture nominee,  Top Gun: Maverick.

If you’re hoping to see Tom Cruise at the 2023 Oscars, we regret to inform you that Cruise is not in attendance at this year’s Academy Awards. It’s a surprising move from Cruise given that  Top Gun: Maverick  is nominated for Best Picture this year and his absence is one that many fans are curious about. So why exactly isn’t Cruise at the Academy Awards tonight?

Why isn’t Tom Cruise at the Oscars? (2023)

Although  Top Gun: Maverick  is nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, you won’t see its star Tom Cruise in attendance for one simple reason. Cruise has opted not to appear at the Oscars as he’s currently in the UK working on a new project.

According to Deadline , Cruise is skipping the 2023 Oscars due to the fact that he recently returned to the UK and chose not to fly back to the US simply to attend the Oscars, which makes total sense. Should  Top Gun: Maverick  pull off a major upset tonight and win Best Picture, it’ll be Jerry Bruckheimer who will accept the award on the film’s behalf.

As the Oscars  prepare to bring another awards season to a close, it's not without its own mix of snubs and surprises. On Tuesday, Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams revealed the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards , and there were definitely a few names missing from the final list and some unexpected additions that many didn't see coming.

Among them were lack of nominations for any female directors as well as Nope , while Andrea Riseborough, Brian Tyree Henry and Stephanie Hsu were among the unexpected names listed in the acting categories. And then there was the Tom Cruise  of it all.

Below is a breakdown of the biggest shockers and omissions from the 2023 Oscar nominations :

SNUB: Tom Cruise for Best Actor

While Tom Cruise did pick up a nomination for Best Picture as producer of Top Gun: Maverick , there were many that thought this might be the year he received his fourth acting nomination considering his well-received performance in one of 2022's biggest films. The  Top Gun sequel, however, did get several major nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song for Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand."

SURPRISE: Stephanie Hsu for Best Supporting Actress

While there's been no shortage of love bestowed upon Everything Everywhere All at Once this awards season, much of it has been focused on Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. Now, Stephanie Hsu is officially in the mix, nominated for her first Oscar alongside co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, who is also a first-time nominee. Collectively, that's four first-time acting noms among the breakout film's cast -- the most acting nominees for any film this year.

SNUB: All Female Directors

Once again, the Academy Awards failed to recognize any of the women behind the camera who were viable contenders this year. Among them, Sarah Polley ( Women Talking ), Charlotte Wells ( Aftersun ), Gina Prince-Bythewood ( The Woman King ), Chinonye Chukwu ( Till ) and Maria Schrader ( She Said ). Meanwhile, the only women nominated for Best Director since 1929 are: Jane Campion, Chloé Zhao, Emerald Fennell, Greta Gerwig, Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola and Lina Wertmüller.

SURPRISE: Brian Tyree Henry for Best Supporting Actor

Although Atlanta breakout star Brian Tyree Henry has proven to be a formidable presence onscreen, Causeway hasn't had the biggest impact on the awards season so far. Up until this point, Henry was nominated for a Critics Choice Award and an Independent Spirit Award for his turn as an auto mechanic in the psychological drama led by Jennifer Lawrence. But we're happy to see Henry graduate to the big leagues with his first Oscar nomination.

SNUB: Nope Being Shut Out

After Jordan Peele made history at the Oscars with Get Out , his follow-ups have had less and less of an impact at the Academy Awards. And disappointingly, Nope was shut out entirely. Not only should it have been a contender for some of the top prizes, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, but many thought Keke Palmer had a legitimate shot at scoring her first acting nom.

SURPRISE: Andrea Riseborough for Best Actress

The biggest shock came when Andrea Riseborough's name was listed in the Best Actress category for To Leslie , meaning that several others, including Danielle Deadwyler ( Till ) and Viola Davis ( The Woman King ), were left out in the cold. And prior to Tuesday's announcement, her name has only been mentioned once, for an Independent Spirit Award. But if you're wondering how she managed to be included here, it is due to a late-in-the-season, star-studded word-of-mouth campaign .

The 95th Academy Awards , hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be handed out live at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on March 12 starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC. In the meantime, stay tuned to ETonline.com for complete  Oscars coverage .

Lady Gaga removes gown, makeup in emotional performance

Lady Gaga stunned audiences Sunday night with a costume change, in which she shed her Donatella Versace runway gown for a black graphic tee, ripped jeans and some Chucks to perform "Hold My Hand," her Oscar-nominated original song from "Top Gun: Maverick." The dramatic reveal followed a back-and-forth earlier Sunday as to whether the pop superstar would even perform, after producers said her schedule wouldn't allow it just days ago. Go here for more on her performance.

1st Black woman to win 2 Oscars

Ruth E. Carter made history: The costume designer behind the "Black Panther" films has become the first Black woman to win two Oscars.

Carter took home best costume design for the Marvel sequel "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." Carter also won an Academy Award in 2018 for "Black Panther," which made her the first African American to win in the category. Get the full story here .

Where can I see all the fashion?

You can find all 2023 Oscar red carpet looks here when stars arrive.

How were the winners decided?

The road to an Oscar winds through a long awards season, which finally culminates Sunday at the Academy Awards. We take you through the process of getting that golden statuette into a winner's hand here - this is how Oscar voting works .

How to watch the 10 best picture nominees

The clock is ticking to catch up on all the nominees before the ceremony. Go here to find out how to watch them.

What happened to the red carpet?

For the first time in more than six decades, the carpet at the Oscars will be a "champagne" color. Go here for details about why this change was made and what Jimmy Kimmel had to say (joke) about it.

But Jimmy Kimmel swore he'd never host again

He told ABC entertainment reporter Sandy Kenyon, tongue in cheek, "I lie a lot!" Go here for the full interview in which he revealed the lessons and hosting skills he's learned over the years.

So... about that slap heard 'round the world

One year after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, the comic has responded in the best way he knows how: through a comedy special. Go here for details on what he had to say.

Jimmy Kimmel parachutes in to start 95th Oscar ceremony, references Will Smith slap

Tom Cruise and Jimmy Kimmel opened the 95th Oscars with a nod to Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick," which is nominated for best picture. He also addressed one of last year's most talked about moments, when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. Get the details here .

A look at 'The Little Mermaid'

The stars of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" took the stage at the 95th Oscars ceremony to share a new look at the upcoming live-action film. More details here .

"My mother (Janet Leigh) and my father (Tony Curtis) were both nominated for Oscars in different categories," Curtis said, beginning to cry as she accepted the award. "I just won an Oscar!" Watch her full acceptance speech here .

Making history

The 95th Oscars is also being hailed as historic for Asians in Hollywood because "Everything Everywhere All at Once" leads the field with 11 nominations. Go here to hear from co-director and co-writer Daniel Kwan, actress Michelle Yeoh and actor Ke Huy Quan.

A little 'more' conversation with artists behind Oscar nominated 'Elvis'

Oscar voters couldn't help but fall in love with 'Elvis.' As the film struts into Oscar Sunday with eight Oscar nominations, director Baz Luhrmann says the whole team gave it their absolute all. Go here for an interview with star Austin Butler and director Luhrmann.

RiRi is back!

Rihanna followed her soaring Super Bowl halftime show with a performance at the Super Bowl of movies -- the Oscars. The music superstar sang "Lift Me Up" from "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" at the ceremony. Learn more about her performance here .

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' expected to have a big night

With 11 nominations, the award-show universe belongs to "Everything Everywhere All at Once." It was the favorite to win best picture, best director, best actress for Michelle Yeoh and best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan.

Michelle Williams heads to the Oscars for a 5th time

Most of us first got to know Michelle Williams as one of the stars of TV's "Dawson's Creek." Hard to believe but that was 25 years ago. Since then, she has carved a great career in movies, earning five Oscar nominations along the way. The latest is for "The Fabelmans." Go here for an interview with her ahead of the show.

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai arrives at Oscars to support 'Stranger at the Gate' documentary

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, 25, was an executive producer on "Stranger at the Gate," a nominee for short documentary film.

"It is such a powerful message about the power of compassion and kindness and forgiveness," Yousafzai said in a red carpet interview. "And this is something that anyone can relate to, from any corner of the world."

More on her interview here .

'Navalny' wins Oscar for best documentary feature

"Navalny," a film that explores the plot to kill Russian anti-corruption campaigner and former presidential candidate, Alexey Navalny, has won the Oscar for best documentary feature at Sunday's Academy Awards.

Director David Roher dedicated the win to Navalny and "to all other political prisoners around the world."

"Alexei, the world has not forgotten your vital message to us all," Roher said. "We must not be afraid to oppose dictators and authoritarianism wherever it rears its head." Watch acceptance speech here .

'Avatar' Oscars: Sequel wins Oscar for best visual effects

"Avatar: The Way of Water" took home the Oscar for best visual effects Sunday night. The film already had a lot to celebrate: It is the third highest-grossing movie of all time. More here.

'Cocaine Bear' helps Elizabeth Banks present the Oscar for best visual effects

Elizabeth Banks had an unusual co-presenter for the best visual effects Oscar -- "Cocaine Bear," her co-star in the new comedic thriller of the same name.

But unlike the movie, which featured an entirely CGI bear, this was clearly some guy in a suit. Here's what happened .

Who were oddsmakers betting to win it all?

For those who don't want to wait, go ahead and offer congratulations to "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Oddsmakers say it'll win at least six Oscars this year. Learn more here.

Jimmy Kimmel jokes about Will Smith slap, roasts celebs at 95th Oscars

Kimmel kicked off the ceremony by parachuting onto the state, 'Top Gun' style.

LOS ANGELES -- Jimmy Kimmel parachuted onto the stage to kick off the 95th Oscars Sunday night and soon began firing off one-liners at the celebrities in attendance -- and some who were conspicuously absent.

Among those missing from the Dolby Theatre but still a key element in Kimmel's monologue: Will Smith, who earned himself a 10-year ban from the Oscars after storming the stage and slapping Chris Rock last year .

"We want you to have fun," Kimmel told the audience. "We want you to feel safe. Most importantly we want me to feel safe."

"So we have strict policies in place: If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor, and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech," he added.

Kimmel noted after last year's incident, the Oscars has a crisis team in place for this year.

He joked: "If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year: Nothing. Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug."

Kimmel opened the ceremony with a nod to Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick," digitally inserting himself into a flight scene and reluctantly ejecting himself from the cockpit -- landing on the Dolby stage.

That happened even as real-life fighter jets performed their own tribute to the film with a flyover above Los Angeles. The U.S. Navy pilots in F/A-18 Super Hornets flew above Hollywood Boulevard after taking off from Naval Air Station Lemoore near Fresno.

Kimmel, hosting for the third time, also had a little fun with some of the distinguished Hollywood luminaries at the ceremony.

Steven Spielberg, for example, who is now the only director to be nominated in six different decades, with his nomination for the semiautobiographical "The Fabelmans."

Noting Spielberg was seated near Seth Rogen, he urged the notorious stoner to share some substances with the director.

"Steven claims he's never even smoked weed. Which I find hard to believe. You mean to tell me you were sober when you made a movie about an alien who eats Reese's Pieces all day and can't remember how to phone home? You were high as a bike when you made that movie."

He also had some fun with the traditional length of the Oscars show, which this year had more categories added back in.

He noted both director James Cameron and Tom Cruise were absent from the show.

"You know a show is too long when even James Cameron can't sit through it."

Tom Cruise is Skipping the Oscars

Lady Gaga, on the other hand, is expected to make a surprise appearance to sing her Top Gun: Maverick song

Tom Cruise is Skipping the Oscars

One of Hollywood’s biggest stars will be absent from Hollywood’s Biggest Night

Despite saving Hollywood’s ass with Top Gun: Maverick , Tom Cruise will not be in attendance for tonight’s Academy Awards . Instead, according to Deadline , Cruise has opted to stay in the UK and continue filming Mission Impossible 8 .

Cruise did not receive a Best Actor nomination for Top Gun: Maverick , but the film is one of the finalists for Best Original Picture. While it’s not considered a favorite to win, if Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a surprise upset, co-producer Jerry Bruckheimer will accept the award on Cruise’s behalf.

While Cruise will be missing from the festivities, a different member of the Top Gun: Maverick family is expected to make a surprise appearance. Lady Gaga will take the stage to perform “Hold My Hand,” her Oscar-nominated contribution to Top Gun: Maverick , during tonight’s ceremony. It was previously announced that Gaga would not be singing due to scheduling conflicts with Joker: Folie à Deux . However, Variety reports that after a last-minute back-and-forth with Oscar producers, she will perform after all.

The other four finalists nominated for Best Original Song — including Rihanna and David Byrne — are also confirmed to perform during tonight’s Oscars.

It's Top Gun Day, And Tom Cruise Thanked Fans With A Sweet Social Media Post To Celebrate The Movie's 38th Anniversary

Tom Cruise provides a look behind the making of Top Gun.

It was 38 years ago today – on May 16, 1986 – that Tony Scott 's Top Gun first arrived in theaters, and it's a date that Tom Cruise remembers. After all, the movie was one of the early hits that established the actor as a true Hollywood A-lister, and it will forever be reflected upon as a key part of his big screen history. As one would expect, Cruise has fond memories associated with the film (as well as its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick ), and he celebrated its anniversary of the classic action film today with a sweet social media post.

Despite the fact that Top Gun is full of 1980s energy , it still feels crazy that the movie came out nearly four decades ago – and that's reflected in Tom Cruise 's post to Twitter this afternoon. In addition to shock, he also expressed gratitude to the fanbase that has kept the love going for the film since it first hit theaters. The actor posted,

It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun. To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you.

The Top Cruise post from Tom Cruise also included a collection of four behind-the-scenes photos from the making of the movie and Top Gun: Maverick (note: it's not terribly hard to figure out which one is from the sequel). Two of the shots feature Cruise with director Tony Scott (who passed away in 2012) , and having a chat with producer Jerry Bruckheimer:

It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun. To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you. pic.twitter.com/xHl22CmdRG May 13, 2024

Along with the message and photos, Tom Cruise also retweeted an official video from the official Top Gun Twitter account celebrating the blockbuster film's latest anniversary – with a special focus on the full legacy of the franchise and clips from both the original movie and the years-later follow-up. It even ends with a salute from Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell that feels like a salute to fans for decades of love:

To the fans that have jet fuel in their blood, happy #TopGunDay. pic.twitter.com/G4JwIYQqtT May 13, 2024

Top Gun: Maverick Cast: The Main Actors And The Characters They Play

Appreciating these photos and video is one thing, and you may now find yourself blasting "Highway To The Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away" through your speakers... but everyone knows that the only proper way to celebrate Top Gun Day is by actually watching Top Gun – and that's actually really easy to do nowadays. In addition to being on 4K UHD and Blu-ray , as well as available for digital rental and purchase, the beloved '80s classic is accessible for both Prime Video subscribers and Paramount+ subscribers (you can also stream Top Gun: Maverick from the latter service).

Will we someday get a Top Gun 3 that further advance's the franchise's legacy? Tom Cruise has expressed optimism , but time will tell. We here at CinemaBlend are certainly paying attention to all chatter about the project, so stay tuned for all of the latest news and updates about the potential project.

Tom Cruise Celebrates 38 Years Since the Original Top Gun : 'It's Incredible to Look Back'

'Top Gun' producer Jerry Bruckheimer told PEOPLE in March that Tom Cruise has been pitched an idea for a third 'Top Gun' movie that "he liked"

Paramount/Kobal/Shutterstock

Tom Cruise is celebrating nearly four decades of taking to the skies.

On May 13, the actor-producer, 61, shared photos from the set of 1986's original Top Gun on Instagram in honor of the film's 38th anniversary.

The photos show behind-the-scenes pictures of him on set with the movie's director Tony Scott , who died in 2012 at 68, as well as a photo of him sitting with the film's cast in its air-hangar-turned-classroom set.

One throwback photo shows the actor smiling during a conversation with producer Jerry Bruckheimer . Another shows Cruise filming 2022's Top Gun: Maverick as he stares at the famous still of him and costar Val Kilmer shaking hands at the end of the original movie.

"It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun ," he wrote in a caption. "To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you."

Cruise's original Top Gun movie was an immediate hit when it hit theaters May 16, 1986. The movie follows his character Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he attends the U.S. Navy's Fighter Weapons School, better known as Top Gun. The movie costarred Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis and Kilmer, 64, as Maverick's chief rival and eventual ally Tom "Iceman" Kazansky."

Top Gun was the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office that year. It won one Academy Award , for Best Original Song, at the 59th Oscars in 1987, among four total nominations.

Decades later, Cruise regrouped with producer Bruckheimer, 80, to make a sequel, Top Gun: Maverick , which similarly captured audiences' imaginations as the highest-grossing movie of 2022 domestically and made $1.5 billion worldwide. The sequel sees Maverick return to Top Gun to train a new generation of pilots — including characters portrayed by Miles Teller and Glen Powell , among others — for new missions with the Navy.

Many have speculated about the franchise's future given the smash success of Maverick . The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that a third Top Gun movie was in development . In March, producer Bruckheimer told PEOPLE he is working on putting a new entry together.

" We pitched Tom a story he liked . But he's a very in-demand actor and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see," he said.

Burgundy continued, “I can’t wait for you to be up there on Fox Sports commentating on the game you loved, or playing for the Raiders in the playoffs, or coaching the Patriots, or whatever the fuck you’re gonna do.”

He also joked that Brady was “boring” to watch. “I never liked you Tom in all my years of watching professional football. I never saw a more boring quarterback,” he said, later adding: “He actually made me look forward to all the fun and laughter of a Bill Belichick postgame interview.”

Ferrell also took a jab at Belichick: “By the way, Bill, wherever you are, I hope, you know, I hope you know it now it was Tom, it was never you.… Remember that period when people thought it was you. Well, it wasn’t. It was Tom. I understand, Bill. You’re currently unemployed. Good luck on ZipRecruiter. There are a lot of jobs in the health care field. I hear male nurses are in great demand and with your bedside manner, no one would rather wake up after gallbladder surgery and look into the loving kind face of Bill Belichick as he gives you a sponge bath.”

Ferrell played Burgundy in two Anchorman films.

The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady ,  which was part of the  Netflix  Is a Joke Fest, was streamed live, which Netflix touted as the first-ever roast to be telecast live, unedited. The festivities were held at L.A.‘s Kia Forum in Inglewood.

2024 Oscar contenders you can watch right now

Stream these movies that will likely be Oscar nominees next year

Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon

It’s been a terrific year for movies. While superhero movies took a step back, original stories and animation dominated the box office in 2023. Barbenheimer became a cultural phenomenon as fans stormed the theaters to see Barbie and Oppenheimer . Many renowned directors released films in 2023, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, Yorgos Lanthimos, and David Fincher.

With the year coming to a close, awards season is about to kick into high gear. Many critics groups and associations have already handed out awards. The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards recently announced their nominations. However, the Oscars remain the top awards show for the film community.

While some films are still in theaters, there are Oscar-worthy films available to watch at home. Check out these five 2024 Oscar contenders that you can watch right now.

In 2018, Bradley Cooper proved he could be a serious filmmaker with A Star Is Born. The musical romance grossed over $400 million and received eight Oscar nominations, winning for Best Original Song for “Shallow.” In 2023, Cooper returns to the director’s chair for the second time with his passion project, Maestro, a biopic about composer Leonard Bernstein.

Cooper, who co-wrote the film with Josh Singer, stars as Bernstein, the famous American composer who became one of the most decorated and prestigious musicians ever. While the film depicts seminal moments in Bernstein’s career, Maestro focuses on his relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Early reviews have praised Cooper and Mulligan for their performances along with Cooper’s direction. Maestro will be nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Cooper, Best Actress for Mulligan, and Best Makeup and Hair. If there’s one nomination Cooper wants to receive, it’s Best Director, one of the more competitive categories this year.

The Holdovers

What was the last good Christmas movie released in theaters? Unfortunately, the answer may be a pair of movies from 2003: Elf and Love Actually. It’s still early, but Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers has a chance to become a Christmas classic. Set in 1970, Paul Giamatti, who reunites with Payne for the first time since 2004’s Sideways, stars as Paul Hunham, an unlikable professor at a New England prep school forced to remain on campus during Christmas break and supervise the "holdover" students, the kids with nowhere to go for the holidays.

During the break, Paul forms an unlikely friendship with Angus (Dominic Sessa), a 15-year-old in danger of expulsion, and Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), the school’s African-American cook who recently lost her son in Vietnam. The Holdovers has been praised for the performances of the three leads, with Giamatti and Randolph expected to receive Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

How can you go wrong with a romantic drama from A24 set in New York City that features three great performances, an excellent script, and a bittersweet ending? The film in question is Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song in her directorial debut. The film follows two childhood sweethearts — Nora Moon (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) — and their evolving relationship over 24 years.

After spending decades apart, Nora and Hae Sung reunite in New York City and spend a few magical days together as they reevaluate their lives and contemplate their future. Past Lives is a beautiful drama about saying goodbye to our younger selves and embracing who we’ve become. Past Lives could be in contention for some nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Lee. However, the film’s best chance of winning an Oscar will come in Original Screenplay for Song.

Oppenheimer

When Universal released the first teaser trailer for Oppenheimer in July 2022, the footage came with a countdown to the release date and the notice that the “world will forever change.” The trailer was accurate. The world did change because Oppenheimer became a smash hit over the summer.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped create the first atomic bomb during World War II. The film follows Oppenheimer’s complicated life, chronicling his meteoric rise as an American hero to his subsequent downfall and disownment by the government.

Oppenheimer is arguably Nolan’s magnum opus, highlighting his strengths as a brilliant storyteller and technical genius. Oppenheimer will likely be nominated for double-digit Oscars and remains the favorite to win Best Picture.

Killers of the Flower Moon

The world is a better place when Martin Scorsese releases a movie. Four years after The Irishman, Scorsese directed and co-wrote the highly-anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon. Based on the 2017 book by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon is a story of murder, betrayal, and heartbreak as ruthless crime bosses murder members of the Osage Nation to gain their oil and wealth in 1920s Oklahoma.

At the center of the story is Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), a war veteran who returns to home to work for his uncle William Hale (Robert De Niro), the central figure behind the murders. Despite being used by his uncle for financial gain, Ernest falls in love with and marries Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), a member of the Osage Nation who watches her tribe suffer and tries to put an end to the suffering.

Don’t let a three-and-a-half-hour runtime scare you. Killers of the Flower Moon is a masterpiece as Scorsese treats an unspeakable tragedy with care, grace, and respect. Killers of the Flower Moon should garner close to 10 Oscar nominations, with Gladstone being a favorite to win Best Actress.

The “Bar” in Barbenheimer belongs to Barbie. The iconic Mattel character received the live-action treatment in Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie stars as Barbie, the tall, blonde, and beautiful doll who lives a perfect life in Barbieland. Barbie lives in harmony with different versions of Barbies and Kens, with the lead Ken (Ryan Gosling) doing everything in his power to win Barbie’s heart.

One day, Barbie experiences an existential crisis, turning her perfect world upside down. To fix her problems, Barbie travels with Ken to the real world, where she discovers the joys and harsh realities of human life.

Barbie is a smart and witty film that has as much laughs as it does heart. Barbie won over audiences around the world as it currently holds the title of the highest-grossing film of 2023 with $1.4 billion. Barbie just set a record with 18 Critics Choice Awards, so it will undoubtedly receive quite a few Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Gosling, and Best Original Screenplay for Gerwig and Baumbach.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

In 2018, Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse became the first animated film in the Spider-Man franchise. The film centered around Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a Brooklyn teenager who transforms into Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Into the Spider-Verse was universally praised by critics and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. This past summer, Miles returned to theaters with the sequel, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse.

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Miles is transported into the Multiverse, where he meets hundreds of Spider-People who fight to protect their respective worlds. Led by Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), these Spider-People form the Spider Society.

When a new enemy threatens the fate of the Multiverse, Miles takes matters into his own hands to do what he feels is right, even if it pits him against the Spider Society. Across the Spider-Verse had a high bar to clear, but it passed with flying colors. Thanks to a heartfelt story and dazzling visuals, Across the Spider-Verse is the favorite to win Best Animated Feature and has a legitimate chance at a Best Picture nomination.

2024 Action Comedy Is Giving A Beloved Actor Their First-Ever Lead Movie Role Aged 94

  • 2024 boasts top-notch action films with diverse styles, from martial arts to indie thrillers to explosive blockbusters.
  • At 94, June Squibb has finally landed her first lead role in the action-comedy film Thelma .
  • An unconventional action-comedy, Thelma boasts both hilarious and heartfelt takes on aging.

From Dev Patel's directorial debut Monkey Man and the Kristen Stewart-led Love Lies Bleeding to Jason Statham's action-packed The Beekeeper , 2024 has seen its fair share of top-notch action films. Not to mention, the year's best action movies run the gamut. Some are full of impressive martial arts and nuanced choreography, while others are indie thrillers or packed with explosions. Essentially, there's an action movie out there for every type of viewer , and enough record-setting blockbusters to inspire faith in summer 2024's slate of popcorn movies.

An unlikely competitor that's partly inspired by Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible ...may be the year's best action-comedy movie.

Most recently, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's The Fall Guy received rave reviews for being a pitch-perfect action-comedy flick. Like the year's previous action-comedy releases — Argylle and Drive-Away Dolls are prime examples — Gosling's Fall Guy under-performed at the box office . While audiences may have enjoyed their time with the thrilling-yet-humorous Fall Guy , the film will face some steep competition come June. In fact, an unlikely competitor that's partly inspired by Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible , and led by a beloved 94-year-old actor, may be the year's best action-comedy movie .

Beloved Character Actor June Squibb Plays The Lead Role In Thelma

The 94-year-old actor even performed most of her own stunts.

Set to hit theaters on June 21, 2024, Thelma stars beloved character actor June Squibb in its titular role. An unconventional action-comedy flick, Thelma was written and directed by Josh Margolin, and based, in part, on the filmmaker's own grandmother. In the film, Squibb plays Thelma Post, a 93-year-old woman who's living on her own for the first time ever . Since her husband's passing, Thelma has been surrounded by family. As Thelma grapples with her shifting autonomy, her relationship with her down-on-his-luck grandson, Danny ( White Lotus ' Fred Hechinger), serves as the film's heart.

Using her social "invisibility" and grit, Thelma channels her inner Tom Cruise...

One afternoon, a frantic Thelma is duped by a phone scammer who pretends to be Danny. After she mistakenly sends the scammers thousands of dollars, Thelma enlists the help of her friend, Ben (the late Richard Roundtree), and his motorized scooter, and sets off across Los Angeles. Using her social "invisibility" and grit, Thelma channels her inner Tom Cruise to prove to her family that she's more than capable. A deft, heartfelt, and hilarious subversion of the action genre, Thelma has delighted on the festival circuit, from the Sundance Film Festival to the SFFILM Festival.

Thelma Review: June Squibb Is Hilarious In Josh Margolin's Delightfully Irresistible Comedy

June Squibb proves she's still on top of her acting game in an energetic, charming adventure comedy that is actually genuinely funny.

What Else June Squibb Has Appeared In Before Thelma

The actor earned an oscar nomination for nebraska.

Although June Squibb began her acting career during the 1950s, she stuck to stage productions for decades. By the early 1990s, Squibb had transitioned to acting on the silver screen as well, landing parts in The Age of Innocence , Meet Joe Black , and Todd Haynes' Far from Heaven . The actor's breakout film role came in 2013 when she played Kate Grant in the black-and-white comedy-drama road film Nebraska , which was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or. Performing opposite Bruce Dern and Will Forte, Squibb was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Despite decades in show business, June Squibb has never been the lead actor in a film or TV show.

On television, Squibb has appeared in a variety of hit comedy and drama series, including HBO's Girls , Getting On , Grey's Anatomy , Shameless , Modern Family , and Good Girls . The Oscar-nominated actor has also lent her voice to several big-name animated films, like Ralph Breaks the Internet , Toy Story 4 , Soul , and the upcoming Pixar movie Inside Out 2 . Despite decades in show business, June Squibb has never been the lead actor in a film or TV show. Needless to say, the 94-year-old's starring turn in Thelma is exciting for many reasons .

10 Criminally Overlooked Movies From 2013 That Deserve More Attention

Between satirical crime dramas and even an art house movie from Michael Bay, 2013 is full of overlooked movies more than almost any other year.

Thelma's 93-Year-Old Protagonist Uses Her Invisibility To Make A Crucial Point About Aging

Thelma is laugh-out-loud funny yet deeply poignant.

In Thelma , the titular character's daughter Gail (Parker Posey) and son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg) take the scam as evidence that Thelma shouldn't be in charge of her own life. More than anything, Squibb's character wants to enjoy living independently, though she still finds the whole thing strange. In grappling with how society views her — and her abilities — Thelma comes to realize how much she prizes her autonomy. Although the movie is incredibly funny, it's also deeply moving. By putting viewers in the title character's perspective, Thelma illustrates both her limits and her abilities, underscoring just how crucial it is to see the nuance in others' lived experiences.

Thelma is set to premiere in theaters on June 21, 2024.

Thelma (2024)

Thelma is a 2024 comedy film written and directed by Josh Margolin. Thelma Post finds herself duped out of money and more when a scam caller pretends to be her grandson. Unwilling to sit back and let herself be a victim, she sets off into the city to find the perpetrator and take back what is hers.
