For the past 20 years, Maynard James Keenan has worked tirelessly to bring Arizona’s burgeoning wine industry to international attention. In the process, he has launched the award-winning Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards, introducing the world to some of Southwest’s most delicate and refined bottles -- campaigned for the Verde Valley’s certification as an American Viticultural Area (designated in 2021), all while growing a thriving local infrastructure and community across the region.

Our Vineyards

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards maintains multiple vineyard sites across Arizona, including six vineyards situated amongst the stunning landscapes of the Verde Valley, as well as the Al Buhl Memorial Vineyards to the Southeast in Willcox. Our vineyards range in elevation from 3,300 to 4,900 ft. Our farming practices revolve around a low yield / high density philosophy. With 110 total acres under vine, the winery produces approximately fourteen thousand cases per year, across all of our brands.

Our most publicly visible site. Located in Old Town Cottonwood, the Galileo Block consists of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano. Wines produced from this site are available exclusively in the VSC Ventura Room.

The Judith Block, is located on a south east facing slope at 4900 ft. Less than a half acre each of Nebbiolo, Aglianico, and Tempranillo with a dash of Malvasia in between.

Located right on Oak Creek, this 2.5 acre plot is home to Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Agostino/Agostina block is a 3.5 acre plot and home to our Monastrell/Mourvedre, Albarino, Lulienga/Lignan Blanc, & Malvasia Bianca.

In early 2012, just outside of Cornville, AZ, we planted 30 acres on what we refer to as the Eliphante Block. Here we have mostly Italian clones, with a few Spanish and French as well.

The Al Buhl Memorial Vineyard lies at the eastern edge of Sulfur Springs Valley (alongside the Willcox Playa) in what is known as the Kansas Settlement.

The Yavapai Community College  Verde Valley Campus is located in the foothills of Mingus Mountain in Clarkdale.

5 Incredible Cornville Wineries in the Verde Valley Wine Region

The Verde Valley wine region in the northern part of Arizona is home to 3 distinct areas. Unlike some other sites, we’ve chosen to break each of these areas down so you can dive deep into each location and enjoy local wine.

The Cornville wineries in the Verde Valley AVA are more rurally-located than those in Cottonwood and Jerome. However, they are all located along North Page Springs Road, making them easy to visit in a day.

For the purposes for this article, we are only going to cover the wineries located along this road. We do cover almost all the wineries in this AVA through these guides here: Cottonwood Wineries and Jerome Wineries .

Short on Time? Here are the key takeaways:

  • There are 5 wineries located in the Cornville, AZ area.
  • In our opinion, don’t miss Cove Mesa even though it’s not in the cluster of wineries on Page Springs Road.
  • D.A. Ranch has the most beautiful setting with a unique farmhouse vibe.
  • The Cornville wineries listed below are organized by location from North to South.

This post was originally published in April 2023, and was updated in April 2024.

About Verde Valley

verde valley arizona map

The Verde Valley AVA is located in the center of Arizona, covers roughly 200 square miles, and currently has over 20 wineries.

There are more than 40 wine grape varietals being grown in the region. The top white varietals include: Malvasia Bianca, Viognier, Chardonnay, Vermentino, Seyval Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc.

The top red varietals in the region include: Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tannat, and Barbera.

Arizona Wine Trail Passport

Visit Arizona offers the Arizona Wine Trail Passport . It’s free to join and the best part is, it’s exclusively on your mobile device. No paper passports needed.

Once you sign up, you’ll receive a text to access your info. The biggest advantage to signing up is some wineries offer 10% off a bottle purchase.

While there aren’t guaranteed prizes, you can check in at different wineries locations to potentially win a shirt, wine glasses, wine gadgets and more.

Verde Valley Wine Trail App

Brand new to 2022, the Verde Valley Wine Trail created an app to support the region.  If you visit 10 stops in the Verde Valley, you’ll be entered to win a weekend getaway for 2 in the region.

While we both downloaded the app in November 2022, most of the locations listed we visited didn’t have the QR code to scan to log your visit.

In addition, none of the locations had a paper copy to get stamped. Also of note, at least 4 locations listed on the app were permanently closed.

Our advice, keep reading our guide for the most up to date info!

D.A. Ranch Estate Vineyards

D.A. Ranch Estate Vineyards - Cornville wineries, arizona, verde valley

  • Hours: Usually Wednesday – Sunday from 11 AM – 6 PM, but this is a popular venue so it will vary
  • Food Available: Yes
  • Reservations Required: No, unless group is 13+ people

D.A Ranch is a family-owned winery that began back in 2002 when the family, who operates one of the oldest privately-owned agricultural businesses in Arizona, purchased the ranch and quickly realized the fertile soil was perfect for a vineyard.

Fast forward to 2008 and the first wines were being produced from their 100% estate-grown grapes of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Tannat, and Seyval Blanc.

While D.A. Ranch is located right off of the main road, it is a bit more tucked away than the other wineries in Page Springs and really gives you that “winery” feel on the drive up.

Before you arrive at the tasting room, which is a huge and beautiful log cabin, the gravel road up and down to the property will bring you past many of the vines whose fruits you’ll soon be tasting.

But the surrounding grounds are what really makes this place so great.

D.A. Ranch Estate Vineyards, Arizona

Feel free to grab your glass/bottle of wine and roam around the property. There is a huge grassy area all around the tasting room which is perfect for relaxing in the grass and listening to their occasional live music.

We each opted for a glass of wine, partly to escape the chaotic tasting room on a busy fall Saturday, and partly to relax without being ushered through a wine tasting.

The wines we had were good, though we will warn you that they were some of the most expensive glasses we had ($18 each), not just in the Cornville wineries area but in the entire AVA.

We suggest buying a bottle as this might be the cheaper route at this spot. Whatever you don’t finish you can cork and take with you.

As stated above, DA Ranch doubles as one of the only high-end wedding venues in this area so their hours vary. Check the home page to see their calendar.

Javelina Leap Estate Vineyards

Javelina Leap Estate Vineyards - Cornville wineries

  • Hours: 7 days a week, 11AM – 6 PM
  • Reservations Required: No

About 2 minutes down the road from D.A Ranch, you’ll find Javelina Leap Estate Vineyards . Another family-owned-and-operated winery, Javelina Leap is churning out Arizona-grown wine that is worth a visit.

The winery has a great setup with many different options for enjoying your wine – there is an outdoor area underneath some beautiful trees to enjoy nature, a few different tasting rooms/areas, and an outdoor patio to enjoy some live music.

No matter the wine(s) you get, every part of the production process (de-stemming, pressing, fermenting, aging, bottling, and labeling) is performed on-site at the winery – a true vine-to-wine experience.

You might also be wondering about the name, Javelina Leap.  Well, it’s actually a combination of a couple of things.

First, Javelina is the name of the wild boar-looking animal that is native to this area of Arizona and can often be seen roaming the vineyard at dusk.

Second, Leap is an ode to Stags’ Leap Winery from Napa as they are the winery credited with putting American wine on the map at the “Judgment of Paris” tasting competition in 1973.

We shared a flight and enjoyed our time on the sunny patio taking in some subtle mountain views of Cornville in the distance.

Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery

Oak Creek Vineyards - Verde Valley, Arizona

  • Monday – Thursday: 11 AM – 6PM
  • Friday – Sunday: 10 AM – 7 PM
  • Food Available: Yes, cheese and veggie plates only

Right next door to Javelina Leap is Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery (Google Maps says 476 feet away).

The 11-acre vineyard sits in the shadows of House Mountain and only about 500 feet from the literal Oak Creek, one of the few natural year-round bodies of water in Arizona.

As of 2020, the winery is under new ownership, but the new owners are still dedicated to making wines just the way they are meant to be drank – with family and friends. They strongly believe that the experience and atmosphere of sharing/drinking wine enhances the overall experience, so you’ll find the tasting room and patio area to be relaxed and casual, allowing you to enjoy your wines however you see fit.

They offer three different flight options (white, red, and a staff pick) or you choose a wine by the glass/bottle to enjoy at your leisure.

Because of the tannins and higher alcohol that usually result from the warmer climate, they strive to balance their wines and make them bright and enjoyable for all palates, times of year, and food pairings.

Given that our palates sway to the bigger and bolder reds, we were partial to the Syrah.

Page Spring Cellars

Page Springs Cellars - Cornville wineries, Arizona

  • Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 7 PM
  • Thursday – Saturday: 11 AM – 9 PM
  • Food Available: Yes, full kitchen

Page Springs Cellars is located just another hop, skip, and a jump up the road. You could make an entire day of it at Page Springs Cellars tasting wine, walking through the vineyards, connecting with your inner-self through some yoga, and eating at their bistro.

Something that is near and dear to the owners of Page Springs is sustainability as they believe to make great wine, they must also take responsibility for the lands that produce it.

That’s why they take various practices in their operations – they don’t till their soil which can release carbon, their solar panels produce 100% of their electricity, they have an on-site wastewater treatment and disposal system, and they minimize transportation by only distributing in Arizona.

Most of the grapes come from their estate vineyards in the Page Springs area, but they do source some of their grapes from other well-known Arizona wineries.

Vitae Spirits at Page Springs Cellars - Verde Valley

In addition to the wine, they also carry a line of spirits and liquors called Vitae Spirits . The Page Springs founder, Eric Glomski, is also an integral member of the Vitae team, helping to craft small-batch, artisanal distilled spirits. If you are looking to kick up your tasting experience, you can taste 3 craft liquors.

We were lucky enough to sample the Vineyard Brandy and almost left with a bottle.

Page Springs Cellars was the busiest of all the Cornville wineries and did have a little bit of a wait, so come prepared. Reservations are only available for their wine club members. But, you can reserve a private event if you don’t want to risk it.

Page Springs Cellars has a lot to offer, including live music during the week. They are open 365 days a year so you can enjoy their wine any time!

Cove Mesa Vineyards

Cove Mesa Vineyards - Verde Valley AVA, Arizona

  • Monday – Thursday: 12 PM – 6PM
  • Friday & Saturday: 11 AM – 7 PM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 6 PM
  • Reservations Required:  No

Cove Mesa Vineyards is an entire 5 minutes(!) from the cluster of Cornville wineries mentioned above. As the newest winery to the area, Cove Mesa is focusing on old-world style wines that are just phenomenal.

Much like the other wineries nearby, Cove Mesa sources all of their grapes from Arizona, many from their estate vineyard in the Verde Valley and others from the Willcox area.

Wine flights or glasses/bottles can be enjoyed from their new tasting room, which often has live music, in the heart of Cornville.

Small bites (think charcuterie boards and flatbreads) are available to complement the wine.

Since the winery’s first vintage was in 2020, they are still growing their portfolio of wines and varietals, but everything we had in our flight was fantastic (Sangiovese, Malbec, Cab Sauv, and Tempranillo).

Also, by happenstance, we had a chance to meet and talk with the owner/winemaker for a while about how he got into the business, his travels, and his love for wine.

It was a great experience, and much like we mentioned above, it elevated the overall experience.

Of all the Cornville wineries, Cove Mesa was our favorite and it was the only place we purchased a bottle to go.

I had the opportunity to book one of the grand opening tours with Taste of the Valley Tours. I had the most amazing afternoon with Sebastian and Kimberly. Sebastian drove along a beautiful route full of amazing views. We visited three different wineries where I was able to taste 15 different wines and see the different vineyards.

Each had

Each had a different feel and vibe coupled with unique wines. It was great the wine tastings were included as part of the tour price too so there were no additional costs!

Sebastian would pull up and get us right into the wineries with no waiting and took care of making sure the wine was brought out with no hassle. When we were ready to leave he was considerate to make sure the bus was nice and cool and ready to take us to our next adventure.

I was entertained the entire tour and really loved being able to taste the different wines at each vineyard. I felt like I was given the VIP treatment and truly a special guest.

Overall, this was one of the best wine tasting experiences l've ever had and would 100% recommend this tour!

Camp Verde

Wine tasting in Camp Verde Alcantara Vineyards Clear Creek Vineyard and Winery Salt Mine Wine

In the last decade, Arizona has been recognized as a producer of great wine. With the combination of the perfect soil and the ability to irrigate, the Verde Valley has become a popular wine region in Arizona, and is now home to over a dozen wineries and vineyards. In Camp Verde, we are proud to have three locally owned and operated vineyards only a short distance from downtown.

Ignacio Mesa, owner of Clear Creek Vineyard and Winery , was one of the first wine makers to recognize the potential the Verde Valley has to offer as a grape region. Starting over 10 years ago, Mesa has been using organic farming methods to grow his grapes that he then makes into his Rio Claro Wine. His winery and vineyard are open Wednesday through Saturday for guests to stop by and enjoy a wine tasting.

Salt Mine Wine  planted grapes and developed their own vineyard and winery on a historic farm off Salt Mine Road. They have released a limited production of vintage  Arizona wines. Their tasting room is open every Saturday and holidays.

Annexed into the Town of Camp Verde in September of 2020, Alcantera Vineyards is the newest addition to the Camp Verde winery family. Alcantera Vineyard began in 2004, when founders Barbara and Bob Predmore recognized that the soil and climate in the Verde Valley resembled the wine making regions of Italy and France. Since its inception, Alcantera has grown dramatically and now has over 20,000 vines, offering 17 different varietals. A trip to this little slice of paradise offers peaceful surroundings which include the vineyards, a grass picnic area, access to the Verde River, and much, much more!

Actual Blasian Tour Photos

Alcantara Vineyards is a dream venture created by Barbara and husband Bob to provide their family and partners the opportunity to live the dream of growing a vineyard community and winery. It was in cultivating the vineyards and embracing the land that Barbara and her family soon realized there was a bigger picture in this hidden treasure along the confluence of two rivers. You’ll find Alcantara Vineyards has over 20,000 vines and offers 17 different varietals. While you sip wine and enjoy our peaceful surroundings, which include vineyards, a grass picnic area, the Verde River and bald eagles flying overhead, you’ll find you are part of our community and family.

Merkin Osteria

“Our Farm to Your Table. Our Vines to Your Glass.”

Our fruits and vegetables are farmed by our Merkin team in our Verde Valley greenhouses, gardens, and orchards. All of our pastas and breads are made from scratch using from Arizona Heirloom and Italian milled wheat flour.

Mother Nature beats the drum to which we march and jump. So our menu remains flexible and changes weekly or even daily depending on her whims. It’s a challenge and journey we gladly embrace and we sincerely hope you join us in our quest.

Blasian Northern Arizona Sedona Wine tou

grapes in a challenging and surprising place. Arizonans have shown support for these adventures and we look forward to this challenge. We also look forward to sharing our passion for wine and the wine lifestyle.

We believe Wine is not just a beverage but an experience. Wine is the most social of drinks. When people want to connect, they generally do so over a glass of wine. A nice bottle of wine is the usual feature of any date night. And of course, wine has an intimate connection with our environment. We farm grapes, in harmony with our surroundings, trying to leave a small footprint, and creating a lifestyle that can survive the challenges of our climate, today and in the future.

Charron Vineyard

Vineyard History

Charron is one of the oldest vineyards in southern Arizona.  The soil, lay of the land and an altitude of 4200 feet with warm days and cool nights makes it a perfect vineyard location. In spring 1994 the first Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines were planted with the first wines becoming commercially available in 1999.   In 2000 the White Merlot won the Governor's Choice Award and has sold out every year since.

We are happy to announce that we have resumed our normal hours of 10 am - 6 pm Thursday thru Sunday

We are taking every precaution to keep our customers and staff safe.

Our tables and chairs are sanitized between customers, and menus and pens are one-time use.

We are also operating at reduced capacity so please bear with us while we adjust to the new normal!

Deep sky Vineyard

We just couldn’t get enough with our first vineyard experience in Argentina; literally. The growing cycle for grapes starts with bud break and ends with harvest. In Argentina, bud break is in October and harvest is in April. In Arizona, bud break is in April and harvest is in September. So rather than getting six months off we decided it would be more fun to work all year long and Deep Sky Vineyard was born!

Deep Sky is a 20 acre boutique vineyard located just south of Willcox, Arizona. From the start we had one goal – to prove great grapes could be grown in Arizona. As vineyard owners we believe that “80% of the wine is made in the field.” This means that great wine begins with great fruit and great fruit requires a lot of attention. There are 15,000 vines and each one is touched at least 5 times a season as we: prune, leaf–pull, shoot thin, drop fruit, and finally harvest.

Identification

What to wear

The first rule is to dress casual and comfortable, the goal is to have fun.

Avoid shoes or clothes that make it difficult to easily enter and exit a limo or walk about.

Evenings can get cool in spring, fall, and winter, consider a light jacket as a backup.

Avoid white or colors that will easily show wine spills and stains.

Tipping - Driver gratuity

All tips are certainly appreciated.  Industry standard for personal drivers is 20%.  Consider that your driver spent a day servicing and cleaning your limo, ensuring your travel safety, guiding you to the top wineries, answering questions, and helping you with boxes and bags.

Best tour months? - (book early hint: 4-6 weeks is not too early)

Spring flower blooming months are March, April, and May, book early.

Spring Break weeks usually in March, book early.

August is grape harvest time, book early.

Fall festival months, October and November,  book early.

Best tour days? (we offer wine tours seven days a week).

Holiday weekends - book early!

Saturday is the busiest tour day (consider Friday or Sunday for a tour).

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are least busy.

Bring a camera - share the tour fun with friends and we will gladly help get you in the shot too.  We love when you share your photos on social media or with us.

Perfume and cologne will interfere with wine tasting. We recommend avoiding perfume and cologne

Try some of the best Arizona wines at these spots in the Verde Valley

wine tours cornville az

Gov. Katie Hobbs recently signed a bill giving Arizona drivers the option of a new specialty license plate celebrating the northern Arizona wine industry.

One of the main purposes of the bill is to provide a passive income stream for the Verde Valley Wine Trail , a nonprofit organization of area wineries. A majority of the annual fee for each plate would be donated to the group.

The organization has indicated that the funds will be used primarily for the expansion of vineyards, increasing sustainable agricultural practices, tourism marketing and public education on safe alcohol consumption.

As the new license plates begin hitting the road, consider a trip to northern Arizona where numerous local vineyards made The Arizona Republic’s list of best Arizona wines in 2024 .

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards, Jerome

Maynard James Keenan, perhaps best known as the lead singer of the band Tool, has spent 20 years living in the Verde Valley and developing his award-winning winery and vineyard. It has become a major part of the region's growing industry.

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards operates six vineyards in northern Arizona in addition to the Al Buhl Memorial Vineyards in Willcox. With 110 total acres under vine, the winery produces approximately 14,000 cases per year.

Cove Mesa Vineyard, Cornville

Joining the Arizona wine scene in 2020, Cove Mesa Vineyard is located in the heart of the Verde Valley American Viticultural Area.

The family-owned winery focuses on small-production wines using the best grapes available in the Verde Valley and in Willcox, highlighting all of what the state's diverse climates and soils offer.

Cove Mesa operates three vineyards in northern Arizona including nine acres of vines across Oak Creek and eight acres of vines on the western slope of the House Mountain volcano. Its namesake estate vineyard is located on a limestone outcropping in Cornville growing Assyrtiko and Aglianico grapes.

Javelina Leap Vineyard & Winery, Cornville

Named after the javelina that live around the vineyard and in tribute to California's Stags Leap winery that helped propel American wine to prominence, Javelina Leap is a second-generation, family-owned and operated vineyard.

The vineyard sits on 10.25 acres on the south-facing slope of Horse Mountain, an extinct volcano 3,800 feet above sea level. Founder and owner Rod Snapp, along with his wife Cynthia, were among the first 10 vineyard and winery licenses to be issued in the state of Arizona when they first set up shop.

Each year the winery processes around 44 tons of Arizona grapes to produce about 2,600 cases of wine.

Mogollon Vineyards, Dewey-Humboldt

The four owners of Mogollon Vineyards first met in 2014 as students in the viticulture and enology program at Yavapai College. Carpooling to campus quickly turned into wine-tasting dinners, planting vineyards and eventually making their own wine.

Mogollon Vineyards originally began in 2015 on the Snowflake ranch of Keith and D'Alene Moore, before moving to Dewey-Humboldt two years later. Once in the Quad Cities, they merged their operation with that of Troy and Hollie Noreuil, their friends from Yavapai College who established AZ Setting Sun Vineyards in the area in 2015.

The vineyard often hosts various events, including live concerts and trivia nights.

Rubrix Wines, Cottonwood

Verde Valley locals Corey Turnbull and Hayley Meyer met nearly 25 years ago and have spent more than half of that time developing their own part of the state's wine industry.

Turnbull learned much of the trade from his mentor Eric Glomski, owner and winemaker for nearby Page Springs Cellars. By 2019, Turnbull was promoted to head winemaker at the winery.

Throughout that time, Turnbull also co-founded Burning Tree Cellars with Mitch Levy in 2009 and helped operate the brand's tasting room in Cottonwood for nearly 10 years before closing in 2021.

The family's latest concept, Rubrix Wines , was founded soon after. Turnbull is the primary winemaker while Meyer runs the tasting room. A true family business, the couple's daughter also designs the art on some of the labels adorning their bottles.
