Star Trek references in the World of Warcraft

Wait, what? Star Trek is now cool you say? What is my nerdy self going to cling to? What's going to make a geek above other geeks as I recite the Klingon alphabet backwards in the Qo'noS dialect? Oh wait, there's WoW ! And what's more geeky than taking a look at all the Star Trek references in the game? Well, the answer is not much. But that's okay, because it's geek-chic, or whatever those babbling idiots on What Not To Wear say. So take a look my geeky bretheren, all the Star Trek references in the World of Warcraft after thy break.

Side note: Everyone on the day-to-day staff had seen Star Trek by Friday evening except Alex. Is this the worst or the worsest thing that has ever happened on WoW Insider?

Guide to Science Fiction Pop Culture References in World of Warcraft

Guide to Science Fiction Pop Culture References in World of Warcraft

Like any good geek, I’m fully versed in the world of science fiction. From endlessly rewatching all six Star Wars films (yes, even the prequels) to constantly referencing incredibly obscure lines from the Star Trek series (“There are four lights!”) elements of various sci fi films and television shows inevitably find their way into my daily conversations.

Over at Blizzard, the designers behind World of Warcraft are huge nerds as well, and it shows. It seems I can’t spend any time at all in the world of Azeroth without running into some science fiction reference that makes me laugh when I spot it.

In the interest of perpetuating the tenets of nerd-ism, I present some of my favorite science fiction references within the World of Warcraft.

Of course the holy grail of science fiction is George Lucas’ epic series. It’s obvious that the people at Blizzard are as avidly devoted to the Star Wars series as I am, judging by the obscurity of some of the Star Wars references they manage to work into the game.

Fans of Episode I will find quite a few recognizable elements at the Mirage Raceway in Shimmering Flats, Thousand Needles. Here, a team of goblin engineers is constantly trying to perfect their drag racer while competing against a team of equally-dedicated gnome engineers. Occasionally, vehicles built by each of the two teams will square off in a drag race.

Each race is announced by a two-headed ogre named Fobeed. In the famous pod racing scene in Episode I, the action is called by an alien with two heads named Fode and Beed.

Fobeed is not the only reference to the Tatooine pod race in The Phantom Menace to be found nearby. The goblin drag racer, a small chassis attached by cables to a pair of rocket engines, bears an uncanny resemblance to the racer built and piloted by young Anakin Skywalker in the movie.

Aerial View of Toshley’s Station

In the Outland zone known as Blade’s Edge Mountains lies one of the most obscure Star Wars references to be found anywhere in World of Warcraft. I’m willing to bet that most WoW players don’t know that the settlement known as Toshley’s Station is a nod to a throw away line delivered by Luke Skywalker in Episode IV, A New Hope. Uncle Owen asks Luke to perform some work on his recently-purchased droids, to which Luke replies: “But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up

Article Image

some power converters.”

The obscure reference goes even further when players speak to a male gnome named Toshley found at the station. He offers the quest entitled “Picking up some power converters.”

Further References to Star Wars

Other notable Star Wars references include: a pilot in the Military Wing of Ironforge named Xiggs Fuselighter, a reference to Luke’s buddy Biggs Darklighter from A New Hope, an NPC at Kessel’s Crossing in Bloodmyst Isle named Kessel who gives you a quest entitled “The Kessel Run,” a reference to Han Solo’s boast that the Millenium Falcon made the Kessel Run in “less than 12 parsecs,” and R3P0, a robot near Toshley’s Station whose name is an amalgam of the two most famous droids from Star Wars, C-3P0 and R2-D2.

Jhordy Lapforge

Star Trek is another juggernaut of the science fiction world, and numerous references to it exist in Azeroth, as well. One of my favorites is found in Gadgetzan, Booty Bay, and Gnomeregan. Giant transporters are tended by familiar-looking characters with equally familiar-sounding names.

A gnome named Jhordy Lapforge mans the transporter in Gadgetzan. Jhordy’s outfit and glowing eye protection are clearly designed to emulate the similarly-named chief engineer of the Enterprise-D, Geordi Laforge.

Chief Engineer Scooty

Likewise, the Booty Bay teleporter is watched over by a goblin named Scooty, an obvious reference to the chief engineer on the original series, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.

One more transporter is found just inside the entrance to the former gnome capital of Gnomeregan. Nearby, players will find a goblin named Sprock whose faction tag reads “The Away Team.” Sprock wears a blue shirt and with his long pointy ears vaguely resembles the Vulcan science officer from the original Star Trek series, Spock.

Firefly/Serenity

K. Lee Smallfry

The Master Engineering Trainer at Telredor in Zangarmarsh is a female gnome named K. Lee Smallfry. She is an obvious reference to the mechanic aboard Serenity named Kaylee Fry.

A semi-obscure Firefly reference shows up only during the Brewfest Holiday event. Players can purchase a beverage called “Mudder’s Milk,” which is a reference to the Firefly episode “Jaynestown.”

Battlestar Galactica

Kara Thricestar

Perhaps the coolest flight master in the game resides at Fizzzcrank Airstrip in the Borean Tundra zone. Her name is Kara Thricestar, and she is a reference to the Battlestar Galactica character Kara “Starbuck” Thrace.

These are but a few of the numerous references to sci-fi television shows and movies to be found in WoW. Its little touches like these that really illustrate the personal commitment the developers at Blizzard have for the game. It’s obvious that they pour much of themselves into the game , and these little touches really make the game that much more appealing to gigantic nerds like myself.

💥 -All Overwatch Unlock References and Easter Eggs- WIP

DISCLAIMER: Currently A Work in Progress

It still shocks me how many references go unnoticed by a lot of players I come across. So I wanna compile them all so that no reference goes unknown.

I’m going to try and document each individual reference that I recognize, but admittedly my basis for such is pretty limited. References can either come from TV, movies, video games, books, comics, music, memes online, and even from in game. There’s a lot to process so I want to make this a community effort. If I have mistaken a reference or easter egg for something else or have missed some, or want to add your own, feel free to chip in. I’ll be happy to give credit where credit is due.

Side note, the focus here is to document the references of the unlockable items from loot boxes, while there are many more references found in game through scripted dialogue, character interactions, maps, and other things I do want to get through the cataloged stuff first. But after that’s done, I’ll be happy to add the other references mentioned here as well! So keep the references, Easter Eggs, and other bits coming!

Other Side note, in an effort to stop potential plagiarism and such, I do ask that if you received your info through a source such as a Wiki, YouTuber or something similar to please acknowledge that. Realistically, this is more of a contribution type project, and a lot of these references are common knowledge so those who contribute are simply helping to fill in the blanks, not actually claiming to be the original person to find the reference, not required to do so of course, but if you feel the need to it would be nice!

Let’s do this!

Lexicon: - Movie Reference - TV Show Reference - Video Game Reference - Book Reference - Comic Book Reference - Music Reference - Dance Reference - Picture Reference - Sports Reference - Toy/Board Game Reference - Meme/Online Video Reference - In Game Easter Egg - Overwatch Lore Reference Bolded - Hero Name Italicized - Category/Reference Origin Title ( ) - Needs Origin Reference or Verification

Fixes/Changes needed Need to go back and add easter egg sprays from original list Need to add more heroes Need to clean up list a little bit to be more uniform
6/23/18 Added two disclaimers to the post Working on compiling the next 5 heroes (Reaper, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Soldier, and Sombra)

Brigitte’s dance is the official dance of the Swedish handball team

Ana Voice line “You know nothing” is reference to “Game of Trones”.

Also Bastion sitting emote is refference to movie “Steel Gigant”

Doomfist dance is reference to “Guardians of Galaxy vol.2” Groot dance.

Genjis “You are only human.” also references Agent Smith from the Matrix.

Bastion 2nd anniversary voiceline is “Ex-ter-minate”, commonly used by Dr. Who enemies, the Daleks.

Thanks for the corrections, references and responses. I’ll have these updated with credit as soon as I can get to my computer.

Also even if a hero isn’t listed, don’t be afraid to post references for them. I’ll have the list updated soon and add the references for the missing heroes then.

Oh man good luck actually finishing this list but good work nonetheless!!!

Did you just say “Steel Giant”… It’s “The Iron Giant”

Lmao noticed that too. Updated with the actual title.

Thanks for the help so far, updated with with Mei, Mercy, Moira, Orisa, and Pharah as well as references, corrections and responses included here. Credit has been added as well!

Keep it up guys!

D.va - “Time to raise my APM.”

Reference to StarCraft (retconned rip), where APM is how many A ctions you could P erform in a M inute. The higher it was the more optimally you were playing.

Wow great work, side note: there is a really good video by Hammeh , a YouTuber who made a video dating the Origin of the dances. Also,Moira’s dance is from the meme of “Goth’s dancing under bridges” listening to Music, however there is one specific video showing someone doing the exact same dance. I dunno if you’ll include these, but you are doing a great job so far! Keep it up.

Actually a television reference to Family Guy, from which the meme sprang. Was said by Cleveland first.

isnt Winston “dont get me angry” voice line a reference to the incredible hulk saying “you wont like me when I’m angry” quote.

My bad. I didnt saw that movie in loooong time.

I’ll definitely get to Winston eventually and credit you for it, and I’ll look into the “boom goes the dynamite” origins to make sure.

Edit: Boom Goes the Dynamite was actually broadcast first and them memed in 2005, Family Guy/Cleveland Show picked it up after I’m afraid.

As for them Hammeh’s dance references I’ll fill in the blanks and naturally credit him as well.

Symmetras voice line the treat is a lie is a reference to portal

I’ll throw in some things I’ve noticed that aren’t on the list at the time of this typing.

:video_game:

I’m currently out of time, but later on I might return to add some for heroes not currently listed.

Dva’s maximum apm (if she is eating 5 whole hogs+5 more whole hogs being deflected) is approximately 87500, as she shoots down each pellet separately. The current highest apm irl is 818.

Some Dva trivia from the overwatch wiki

The name of Hero of my Storm, the movie D.Va starred in, is a reference to Heroes of the Storm, another game by Blizzard.

If you convert the view count at the bottom of the holographic screen during D.Va’s “Game On” emote to letters, it spells out “Kappa123” in reference to a commonly spammed phrase on twitch

D.Va’s “Taegukgi” skin, both MEKA and battle suit, resembles Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Unit-00 and plugsuit respectively.

D.Va’s bunny symbol that decorates her outfit and can be seen in her sprays could be a reference to the movie Sucker Punch. A mech featured in the movie is painted with a bunny symbol that closely resembles the one found in the game. Additionally, the main protagonist in the movie uses a handgun with a bunny charm similar to D.Va’s.

D.Va’s Epic White Rabbit skin may be a reference to the PlayStation game Jumping Flash!, in which the player controls a white mech called Robbit with the ability to jump great heights

D.Va’s voice line “A New Challenger” (“Here comes a new challenger!”) is likely a reference to fighting games which often use similar lines when a second player joins an existing game. The Street Fighter 2 series explicitly says “Here comes a new challenger!”.

The Top-down shooter D.Va is playing in her game on emote appears to be “The Lost Vikings”, a game playable on the Arcade machine in the cantina of the Hyperion in the campaign of “Starcraft II Wings of Liberty” that is in turn a reference to the old Blizzard game of the same name.

Talk about severe carpal tunnel >_> how can she even take selfies???

World of Warcraft STXI Reference!!

Discussion in ' Star Trek Movies: Kelvin Universe ' started by teacake , Jun 6, 2009 .

YESSS... there's been a new patch in World of Warcraft and Star Trek gets another reference!! The captain on the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Undercity now says as the ship leaves.. "Punch it"

-Brett-

-Brett- Vice Admiral Admiral

Kind of an obscure reference. Haven't lots of action heroes used that phrase? Any WoW players been to Booty Bay lately? Does chief engineer Scooty have a pet now?
Since this has just been included in the most recent patch following the film and since WoW does have a history of Trek references I think it's a fair conclusion that this is a Trek reference.

Roshi

Don't forget the quest called "Trelane's Defenses", the Gadgetzan character named Jhordy Lapforge...

Trek is taking over. Word. *Fingers sign*

Warcraft is full of references, so it doesn't surprise me. The Draenai in WoW seemed exactly like the Minbari from B5 to me - right down to their leader being called Vallen.
The most awesome Trek ref IMHO is the 5 Draenei NPC's who wander around the Exodar as a group. They are named Tobin, Emony, Audrid, Torias, and Curzon.

He-Man This is a great one. You’ll find Blizzard’s hilarious take on He-Man, Battle-Cat, Orko and Skeletor doing the rounds as Arathi Basin battlemasters in the Lower City area of neutral Shattrath City.

Men in Black Area 52 in the Netherstorm is packed with bizarre references, but it’s these Goblins in Black that stand out for us. Leave town and they’ll even zap you with a Neuralyzer debuff that says “The flash of light you did not see did not erase your memories.” Cute.

wow star trek references

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Let it never be said that the folks at Blizzard lack a sense of humor. Canny players passing through the Dalaran Underbelly can spot a level 80 rat instructing four level 1 turtles surrounded by vials of green ooze. No sign of Bebop or Rocksteady, though.

Silence of the Lambs First there’s Clarice Foster character in Thunderbluff (with her lips sewn shut). Then there’s a quest in Dire Maul North to make an ogre-skin suit, which eventually angers an ogre to say “It puts the tannin in the basket or it gets the mallet again!”

wow star trek references

Star Trek There are more Star Trek references than we care to count. So here are the best you can find: a Chief Engineer Scooty in Booty Bay, a Sprok in Gnomeregan, and a be-goggled Jhordy Lapforge in Gadgetzan. Nice.

Star Trek parodies and pop culture references

  • View history

Over the years, Star Trek 's position as a cultural icon has resulted in many parodies and pop culture references of it on other television shows and movies. While some have been subtle tip-of-the-hat references, others have been complete copies, with the intention to reference Star Trek . Additionally, many small acknowledgments may not warrant inclusion, such as the use of the TOS transporter sound for various shrink rays, teleporters, etc. on SpongeBob SquarePants .

The S.S. Enterpaws

In 2018 , UK pet insurer Animal Friends released a thirty-second animated television advertisement promoting their insurance policies, during which a number of talking cats and dogs are floating in space dressed in spacesuits while tethered to a dog bone-shaped spaceship named "S.S. Enterpaws ". [1] [2]

Bell Canada [ ]

A 2024 ad featured Bell's TV service as travelling at the speed of light in a ship resembling a Starfleet ship, with their adversaries only able to muster the much slower "cable speed".

Possibly the earliest Star Trek -themed commercial ever, Procter & Gamble released a television ad for their laundry detergent Cheer in 1969 , depicting an alien character, resembling Spock and wearing a costume similar to an original Klingon uniform, beaming into an average American home. He shows a young mother how to clean her children's clothes perfectly by using Cheer, then beams away. The ad features Gerald Fried 's fight theme from " Amok Time ", as well as the turbolift , transporter , and red alert sound effects from Star Trek: The Original Series , and a soundbite of Spock taken from " Space Seed ", claiming that " Superior ability breeds superior ambition ". [3]

Cheerios [ ]

In 1987 , Cheerios cereals released a television ad as part of a promotional campaign in which contestants could win a walk-on part on the new Star Trek: The Next Generation series. The ad depicted a child walking in to the bridge of the Enterprise -D and sitting down to the operations station, taking out the ship to warp . [4] The ad was filmed on 21 August 1987 on the bridge set at Paramount Stage 6 . [5]

Commodore [ ]

In 1982 , William Shatner appeared in a commercial for the Commodore VIC-20 computer, in which he beams into the scene reminiscent of the transporter . [6]

DirecTV [ ]

In 2006 , broadcast satellite service company DirecTV released a television ad starring William Shatner , recreating his role from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , intercut with actual scenes from the movie. Shatner – as Kirk – claims that such a "big screen TV" like the main viewscreen of the Enterprise deserves true HD quality broadcast, and settling for cable would be "illogical". To Spock's curious look, he asks, " Can't I use that line? " [7]

General Electric [ ]

For their Winter 2017 campaign, Italian luxury fashion company Gucci released an online video ad heavily inspired by 1960s science fiction, including an emphasis on Star Trek: The Original Series . The ad featured a recreation of the Enterprise bridge and transporter room , as well as a scene filmed at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park . Besides Star Trek , the ad also referenced Forbidden Planet , Lost in Space , and Space: 1999 . [8]

Heineken [ ]

In 1974 , Dutch beer company Heineken created a billboard ad depicting an illustrated version of Spock drinking a glass of Heineken, which revives his drooping ears, turning them back to pointing upwards. The last of the three comic blocks adds the caption "Illogical", complete with the slogan "Heineken refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach".

The concept was the brainchild of copywriter Tony Brignull, who originally wanted to photograph Leonard Nimoy for the ad, but eventually, when they couldn't locate Nimoy, they decided to create an illustration instead. Nimoy himself didn't even know about the existence of the ad until Henry Fonda asked him during a dinner, how much did they pay him for it. Nimoy, furious that Paramount Pictures didn't pay any royalties to him for his likeness, sued the studio, and later used this matter as a bargaining position during contract negotiations for Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Nimoy agreed to look at the script if the case was settled, and an hour after receiving the check, the script arrived to his house. [9] [10]

In the review of Scooby-Doo!: The Mystery Begins (featuring Daniel Riordan , and again, the voice of Frank Welker), Walker claims that slightly changing Scooby's " Right here " catchphrase is like if Spock would say, " Live Long and Succeed in Material Terms or Be Financially Successful ". He also does the Vulcan salute and an image of Spock from " Amok Time " is seen.

In the review of The Master of Disguise , which co-stars Brent Spiner as the film's main villain, Walker calls the character " Data " at one point, but then he corrects himself that " it's Evil Data, so Lore ". (The film also features Erick Avari in the cast.)

Kimball , and featuring effects work by Richard Yuricich ), Walker edits some shots of Spock appearing in levitation boots at El Capitan from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier into the scene of Tom Cruise climbing a mountain. In his review of the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers , which featured the voices of David Coburn , LeVar Burton , Whoopi Goldberg , Dean Stockwell , Frank Welker , Malcolm McDowell , David Warner , and Clyde Kusatsu , Walker says, " I'm gonna let Geordi from Star Trek tell you " the story, before playing the series opening with narration by Burton.

  • Go right from this area, and the next room you reach is called "NCC-1501".
  • Continuing to the right and up will take you (eventually) to " The TROUBLE with TRIBBLES is... ", which requires leaping over a variety of furry blobs to traverse.
  • Heading left will get you to "Beam Me Down Spotty", a teleport room that will either take you back to The Bathroom (the game's start point) or a planetary surface, its last room being named (naturally) "Beam Me Up Spotty".

In Mass Effect 2 , when Commander Shepard visits a bar on the Citadel, his/her response to an alien drink served is " This is… it's green? ". Similar lines are said about beverages in the episodes " By Any Other Name " and " Relics ".

Being a Scottish engineer, Kenneth Donnelly on the Normandy SR-2 is commonly thought to be a reference to Montgomery Scott .

Both Mordin Solus, the salarian scientist on board the Normandy , and Data are humorously portrayed as enjoying, as well as singing, songs by the British composers Gilbert and Sullivan .

The Citadel features advertisement for a production of William Shakespeare 's Hamlet performed entirely by a cast of elcor, a race who speak in a slow, flat monotone that they prefix all their dialog with non-elcor with an emotive statement to clarify their tone. At the end of the ads, an elcor spokesperson says, "Insincere endorsement: You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have heard him in the voice of elcor." This is a refence to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country when Chancellor Gorkon said "You haven't experienced Shakespeare until you have read it in the original Klingon."

The advancement for using the Nether to travel 7 kilometers in the Overworld is called "Subspace Bubble," a reference to the subspace field used to travel at warp. (One block in the Nether is equivalent to eight in the Overworld, allowing for much faster travel.) Holding a dragon egg unlocks the advancement "The Next Generation," which may be referencing Star Trek: The Next Generation , and entering an End city unlocks the advancement "The City at the End of the Game," which may be a reference to the TOS episode "The City at the Edge of Forever".

Additionally, among the many languages the game is available in is Klingon .

Proto Trekkie Monster - Avenue Q

The puppet was later redesigned to avoid copyright issues with Paramount, also as a resort for the Muppety appearance, diminishing the Star Trek fandom. [53]
  • In 2003, Takayuki Hoshino and Shinji Matsui of the Himeji Institute of Technology created a one-billionth scale 8.8-micrometer-long USS Enterprise replica, utilizing a 30 kV Ga+ focused-ion-beam CVD using phenanthrene gas. Titled Nano Trek , it was imaged with a ion microscope. [54]
  • Stand up comics have also been known to reference Star Trek as part of their acts. Bill Bailey has pointed out how his microphone makes him look like a Klingon motivational speaker, and Eddie Izzard has a routine of how the crew of the Enterprise could defeat enemies with different phaser settings. Two such examples are the "depression", and "I've left the oven on" settings.
  • At the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on 30 October 2010, Jon Stewart used the imaginary threat of " corbomite " in bottled water to illustrate how media figures (personified by Stephen Colbert ) create and magnify fears in the public. " You just got scared by something that is not real, " Stewart said. After explaining the reference to " The Corbomite Maneuver ", Stewart and Colbert briefly discussed Uhura 's incongruous uniform in that episode. [55] [56]
  • In 2013, the American Internal Revenue Service became embroiled in a scandal when it transpired that they had produced a Star Trek -themed instructional video, considered to be an example of wasteful spending. The video showed a mission of the Enterprise -Y to the planet Notax, which threatened to descend into chaos due to noncompliance with the tax code. It also featured a Spock parody. US$60,000 was reported to have been spent on this video and another one based on Gilligan's Island , although the latter video did not get nearly as much media attention. Perhaps even more disturbing than the spending ethics, the video showed the characters wearing TNG-era uniforms while being set on a Constitution -class bridge.

IBM one nanometer USS Enterprise

Nanometer-scale USS Enterprise

  • In 2013 , IBM nanophysicists created Star Trek logos and USS Enterprise and Vulcan salute images created from the manipulation of individual atoms. These images were later used for the Star Trek Into Darkness mobile app. [57]

Heaven's Gate [ ]

The Heaven's Gate religious group, founded in the early '70s and mostly remembered for their tragic mass suicide in 1997, were widely reported to be influenced by Star Trek , and even sensationalized as a Star Trek religion. The group was steeped in general science fiction themes, notably Star Trek , (although shows like The X-Files and Stargate were also associated with them). Notably, they characterized themselves as an " away team " working on Earth. In a 1993 advertisement in USA Today , they likewise described Jesus Christ as the captain in an away team from the Kingdom of God on Earth. In this statement, they also indicated a belief that they were going to depart to the true Kingdom of God on the true Enterprise . The wide-ranging belief statement furthermore talked about their moral prime directive . [63] The allusions to Star Trek in this advertisement were later confirmed to be intentional. [64] The group's website also confirmed their terminology regarding a captain and admiral to be inspired by Star Trek . [65]

Another manifest, "E.T. Speaks: UFO's / Space aliens / Reboot civilization" which was posted to a number of Usenet groups, was sometimes rebranded "The Real Q - An E.T. Speaks out" for Usenet communities with a sci-fi fan audience.

Building on the away team theme, their life routine, in which they were given "assignments" and wore spandex uniform-like light clothing, was further compared to Star Trek in the press. They were also known to recruit at Star Trek conventions. [66]

The member known as Jwnody ended her exit video preceding the mass suicide by saying "thirty-nine to beam up".

Among the members of the cult, and deaths in the 1997 mass suicide, was Nichelle Nichols 's brother Thomas Nichols.

Lauded as the king of MMOs, WoW’s 2004 launch forever changed the world of gaming and with each expansion, it grew with an entire generation of gamers. From questing in Azeroth to raiding alongside your friends, WoW is a unique experience that competing MMOs have often failed to recreate.

Part of WoW's charm is its lighthearted pop culture references celebrating iconic characters and memes from other entertainment mediums. And it’s not surprising that WoW itself, being a worldwide phenomenon, is also referenced as a humorous nod to nerd culture in mainstream television shows and films.

7 Zombieland

Picture this: a leaning tower of pizza boxes, copious amounts of soda, and nothing to do other than queuing battlegrounds in WoW. That’s the scene from the 2009 comedy horror movie Zombieland where you meet the nerdy protagonist Columbus. If you look closely, you’ll notice he’s playing as an undead rogue during a Warsong Gulch battleground match , which is interrupted once he inevitably spills Mountain Dew on his shirt.

An undead rogue as his character is fitting, considering that the premise of the movie is about humanity trying to survive against a vicious horde of undead. And unfortunately, there’s not much time for WoW when you’re running from zombies.

6 The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is an award-winning sitcom often known for its wealth of nerd culture references as it follows the lives of physicists Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter and their small friend group who live and breathe things like Star Trek, Comic-Con, and of course, World of Warcraft.

“The Zarnecki Incursion” and “The Fuzzy Boots Corollary” are two episodes that feature WoW shenanigans. In fact, “The Zarnecki Incursion” is an entire episode about getting back Sheldon’s coveted WoW items after his account had been hacked. According to Sheldon, the thief stole his enchanted weapons, vicious gladiator armor, wand of untainted power, gold, and battle ostrich named Glenn — a heist worthy of FBI interference in his opinion.

5 Family Guy

Shows like South Park, The Simpsons, and Family Guy frequently create hilarious gags about internet culture. So it was a long time coming when Family Guy finally parodied one of the most memorable moments in World of Warcraft history : the 2005 Leeroy Jenkins video. Even non-gamers have heard someone yell “Leeeroy Jeeenkins!” before doing something ill-advised, just as Leeroy did when he rushed into battle without his guild, resulting in an inevitable wipe.

Season 16 Episode 10 features Peter, Joe, and Cleveland who are all stuck behind cover in the middle of a gunfight, and Cleveland suggests that pulling a Leeroy Jenkins would get them out of it. Everything that follows is identical to the original as the three talk out an elaborate plan, crunch some numbers meticulously, and run in after Cleveland pulls the Leeroy. Family Guy went even further to switch the perspective to third-person while also featuring WoW’s UI, including health bars, a map, and an action bar.

Season one of Leverage, a crime drama television series, follows a team made up of a thief, grifter, hacker, and retrieval specialist as they fight corporate injustices by carrying out heists. The show was well-written with enjoyable characters and funny banter. Even better, World of Warcraft gets referenced by the character Hardison.

Related: Best Bosses In World Of Warcraft

In the episode titled “The Mile High Job,” Hardison raves about the Wrath of the Lich King expansion; his guild kept him up all night fighting Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas . Hardison’s experience is pretty relatable, as the hype surrounding that expansion kept us engrossed for hours, and it’s arguably the best expansion in WoW’s history, especially with the high stakes of defeating The Lich King .

3 How I Met Your Mother

“Who’s the mother?” was the burning question that drove fans to keep watching the sitcom How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons, sticking with the hopeless romantic Ted through all his breakups, bad dates, and faux happy-ever-afters. Over the years, you get to see Ted start up romances with many love interests in a variety of ways, including World of Warcraft.

Carol makes a brief season three appearance, and she creates a fake romantic story to explain how she met Ted. Near the end of the episode, the truth is revealed, and the show cuts to an in-game WoW clip with two characters — a male draenei and female human — in Stranglethorn Vale arranging a coffee date.

WoW is actually often celebrated by players as being the reason they met their significant others. But unfortunately for Ted, this budding romance met a quick end. Might as well get back to questing!

A year after its launch, WoW was already popular enough to become a question on the Jeopardy 2005 College Championship. Under the category “Computer Games” for $1,000, the contestants were asked, “This role-playing game came out in 2004 returns to the World of Azeroth, where heroes like Leeroy Jenkins do battle.”

Easy, right? There are so many hints from Azeroth to Leeroy Jenkins that it’s hard to believe anyone would get this question wrong. Well, that’s exactly what happened. None of the three contestants buzzed in and Alex Trebek was the one to reveal the answer: World of Warcraft.

1 South Park

“Make Love, Not Warcraft” is one of the most memorable South Park episodes. It went on to win a Primetime Emmy Award and is widely considered the best video game episode on television. The episode begins with Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny leveling up their Alliance characters when an overpowered ganker kills them and proceeds to kill other players in the game, even killing up to 5,000 players in the Arathi Highlands at one point.

The kids could easily call it quits, but they decide that they’re going to level up their characters by killing boars for low XP until they can take on the high-level player. For 21 hours a day over the course of two months, the kids are dedicated to the grind and when they finally kill the other player, Cartman says his famous line, “Now we can finally play the game.”

Here Are All the References in Ready Player One

wow star trek references

Spoilers below for Ready Player One .

Ready Player One is the apotheosis of a rising trend in film that we might refer to as “recognition cinema” — the phenomenon of trying to please an audience by including brief references to other pieces of fiction. It’s common in — though by no means restricted to — superhero movies, which will commonly drop hints or include cameos that demonstrate a connection to elements the viewers might remember from comic-book source material or separate movies in the same shared universe.

Typically, such references are given some room to breathe so the crowd can go wild at the excitement of recognizing what the filmmakers are implying. Not so in Ready Player One . In Steven Spielberg’s latest picture, there are dozens upon dozens of pop-culture references in dialogue and mise-en-scène; so many that a single pair of human eyes is incapable of catching them all. 10 Unexpected Star Trek References

Sometimes Star Trek pops up in surprising places.

Star Trek Pop Culture

StarTrek.com | Shutterstock/Willrow Hood

I was recently on a quarantine compliant jog, jamming to an 80’s playlist when Nena’s “99 Luftballons” (in its original German) came on. I’ve listened to this song countless times; I may be a 90’s kid, but I have a soft spot for 80’s classics. Unsurprisingly, as a Star Trek fan my favorite part of the song is when Nena name checks Captain Kirk. You don’t have to speak a lick of German to hear the shout-out; according to the universal translator, Nena sings “Ninety-nine jet fighters / Each was a great warrior / Regarded themselves as Captain Kirk.”

“99 Luftballons” has one of those great, unexpected Star Trek references; those times when, in the least likely of places, Star Trek shows up.

I’m not talking about an homage or a parody. Galaxy Quest is brilliant, as is the “Where No Fan Has Gone Before” episode of Futurama , but those are direct Star Trek tributes. I’m referring to watching an episode of Mad Men and characters surprisingly start talking about a Trek spec script.

While Star Trek is so ubiquitous that it regularly appears in every corner of pop-culture – from ’80 German rock songs to Emmy award-winning shows and cult films – it’s still a wonderful surprise when a reference is made, particularly to a fan. Below are 10 of my all-time favorite Star Trek references.

10. Fight Club

At one point in David Fincher’s seminal film, Fight Club , Brad Pitt asks Edward Norton who he would fight, if he could fight anybody. Norton – without skipping a beat – answers with Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. Norton would never had had a chance; if Kirk can beat a Gorn, he can beat Norton.

9. Gilmore Girls

The classic mother-daughter show is full of more pop-cultural references than there are Tribbles. Not only does Kirk, the quirky town do-it-all, share his birthday with William Shatner, but Lorelai’s fourth season boyfriend Digger once justified that hiding their relationship in plain site would backfire by explaining how cloaking technology was problematic across “every incarnation of Star Trek .”

8. “The Chanukah Song”

Adam Sandler’s songs and comedy skits dominated the 90’s. Among his best bits? The part in “The Chanukah Song” when he sings, “You don't need "Deck the Halls" or ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ / Cause you can spin a dreidel with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock (both Jewish!)” Many a fan, including me, learned of Shatner and Nimoy’s shared cultural heritage because of Sandler.

7. “Intergalactic”

The Beastie Boys – the Kelvin timeline’s favorite “oldies” band – directly reference Trek in their sci-fi themed single, “Intergalactic.” The boys from Brooklyn loudly sing: “Your knees'll start shakin' and your fingers pop / Like a pinch on the neck of Mr. Spock.”

6. Crimson Tide

Tony Scott’s superb submarine thriller, Crimson Tide , includes a scene between Denzel Washington’s Commander Hunter and a junior engineer. Washington motivates the crewman by explaining that their dilemma is akin to any number of classic episodes of Trek where Kirk needs Scotty to once again fix the Enterprise in order to save themselves from Klingons.

5. Back to the Future

This classic, which co-stars Commander Kruge himself, Christopher Lloyd, has a great sequence where Michael J. Fox’s Marty convinces his future father to ask his future mother on a date by dressing up in as hazmat suit and proclaiming, all while doing the Vulcan salute and claiming to be “an extraterrestrial from the planet Vulcan.” Paging Temporal Investigation!

4. South Park

South Park is full of Star Trek references. In a sixth season episode entitled “Fun with Veal,” Cartman masterminds a hostage situation. Among his demands? That Michael Dorn, in full Worf make-up drive his getaway truck and refer to him as Captain. Spoiler alert: he does.

3. Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino’s love of Star Trek is well known. In fact, he even worked as a script doctor to punch up the pop culture references in one of our earlier entries, Crimson Tide . Among the most overt Star Trek references in his films is the opening of Kill Bill . The movie begins with a title card featuring the old Klingon proverb, once quoted by Khan himself: “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

Star Trek Beyond - Simon Pegg

StarTrek.com

The cult British sitcom, starring and co-written by Kelvin Scotty himself, Simon Pegg, is littered with Star Trek references. Pegg’s character, Tim, even has that iconic Seven of Nine poster in his bedroom. A favorite moment comes when Tim addresses the classic ‘even vs odd number’ Star Trek film debate. Wonder how Pegg feels about that particular debate now that he co-wrote Star Trek Beyond , the 13th film in the series?

1. Wayne’s World

One of my all-time favorite films has several of my all-time favorite references. The movie has one scene where Wayne, wanting to weigh in on a conversation about the differences in champagnes, compares Star Trek to Star Trek: The Next Generation . (“In many ways it's superior but will never be as recognized as the original.”) In another sequence, Garth famously whistles The Original Series theme while both he and Wayne stare off into the vastness of space.

There are literally thousands of examples to choose from; did some of your favorite unexpected Star Trek references make the list? Let us know @StarTrek on all things social!

The Best Dune Pop Culture References

I t’s hard to find a science fiction property that Frank Herbert’s Dune has not influenced. Published in 1965, the story of Paul Atredies would inspire a generation of artists across the entertainment world. From films to movies and video games , many have paid tribute to one of the sci-fi genre's most beloved works.

10 Games To Play If You Like Dune

While many artists over the years have littered their works with small homages to the novels written by Frank Herbert, sometimes these winks and nods are more obvious. It’s hardly uncommon for writers to put Easter eggs or references in their creations, but Dune has seen more references across entertainment than most.

Updated on March 05, 2024, By Jack Nachwalter: With the release of Dune: Part Two the iconic Frank Herbert series is back in our heads. It's influence is long-standing and you can find easter eggs about Dune in a wide range of songs, shows, movies, and more. We've updated this list to include some extra references to Dune that we've found in pop culture.

Mandy The Merciless

The grim adventures of billy and mandy.

Dune’s central story of warring families fighting over resources is hardly revolutionary, but it’s the extra layers of depth that Hebert added that made Dune remarkable. Between ideas of rebellion, immortality, and Spice, there are many elements that you can pull from.

The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, a beloved Cartoon Network series, is known for referencing other pop culture works. One episode segment called Mandy the Merciless revolves around a plot inspired by God Emperor of Dune.

Interstellar Travel

Ubisoft’s Far Cry series is chock-full of references. Ubisoft has filled the open-world series with plenty of pop culture hints, ranging from Assassin's Creed to Jurassic Park. Dune is no exception, as seen in 2012’s Far Cry 3.

In Ubisoft’s magnum opus , you can find memory cards scattered across the outposts. Most of these cards stay in line with the Far Cry world, but one of the memory cards is about 'Spice', the quintessential resource of the Dune series.

The Girl From Jupiter

Moonrise kingdom.

Director Wes Anderson has always displayed a particular tone and style across his filmography. Anderson might not be typically linked with pop culture hints; in 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom, the Oscar-nominated director included a subtle nod to Dune.

When the main character Suzy escapes into the English wilderness with love-struck Sam, she brings several books along. One of her books, called The Girl from Jupiter, has a map of the North Pole of Arrakis on the back.

Planet References

Star trek series.

Few science fiction IPs are more synonymous with the genre as Star Trek . Gene Roddenberry’s franchise has been a sci-fi stable ever since its inception. Even Frank Hebert is not above paying homage to Roddenberry’s creation.

10 Best Star Trek Games Of All Time

Many planets in the Star Trek galaxy possess names which reference other IPs. In an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, there is a planet called Giedi Prime. This is a clear nod to the homeworld of House Harkonnen in Dune, appropriately known as Giedi Prime.

To Tame A Land

Iron maiden's piece of mind.

It’s not just visual media that can mention each other; music can often be full of references that cross over mediums, too. Heavy metal band Iron Maiden demonstrated its fondness for Frank Hebert’s novel with its 1983 album, Piece of Mind.

One track on the album, To Tame a Land, features several terms from Dune, including Fremen and Caladan. While Herbert himself didn’t give Iron Maiden his seal of approval on the song, he evidently didn’t take the denunciation too hard.

Limitations

Law & order: svu.

For over two decades, Law & Order: SVU has been a mainstay of cable television. A spin off of the Dick Wolf’s original police procedural drama, SVU has been running for over 20 seasons with more than 500 episodes and counting.

In season one, episode 14, Limitations, when a victim panics in the courtroom she says, “ I must not fear. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear.” This is an idiom said throughout the Dune series by individuals in moments of peril.

Chuck Versus The Sandworm

The charming Zachary Levi led show Chuck was full of easter eggs and references to other pop culture properties. Sure enough, Dune was just one of the many works which was spotlighted as part of Chuck’s entertaining story.

Not only did the titular character have a Dune poster in his bedroom, but one episode called Chuck Versus The Sandworm is chock full of Dune tributes, including a Dune sandworm costume being shown off at a Halloween Party.

World Of Warcraft

One of the pinnacle scenes from the 2021 Dune film features Paul Artiendes being given the Test of Humanity by the Bene Gesserit Order. As a deterrent in case Artiendes fails, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam holds a poison tipped needle called the Jom Gabber to Paul’s neck.

World Of Warcraft: 10 Best Pop Culture References

In the popular MMORPG World of Warcraft , the developers added an item called Gom Jabber. Not only is the Gom Jabber an explicit reference, but the item is actually quite useful as it increases attack power.

The Drylands Over The Stormwahl

The name of the wind.

Author Patrick Rothfuss is no stranger to including references into his works. In his fantasy book series, The Kingkiller Chronicles, Rothfuss puts in a passage that references the archetypal sci-fi epic that shaped his writing.

In the series' first book, The Name of the Wind, there’s a moment where a girl asks to hear a story, more specifically “I want to hear about the dry lands over the Stormwahl.” The quote is an unmistakable reference to Arrakis, the single most important planet in the Dune universe.

Savior Of This Devastated World

Nausicaä of the valley of the wind.

There isn’t a more revered figure in the history of animation entertainment than Hayao Miyazaki. While the co-founder of the distinguished Studio Ghibli is unquestionably a master at his craft, he’s not apprehensive about commending his fellow artists.

One of Miyazaki’s best films, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind , shares narrative parallels to Dune both in the central story and in other respects, such as both featuring giant wormlike monsters. It’s clear Miyazaki is a huge admirer of Herbert’s work.

Subnautica: Below Zero

The stillsuit is the quintessential outfit for the people of Arrakis. Given Arrakis’ exceedingly arid climate, water is an essential for the planet’s people. The stillsuit both preserves the body’s moistures and filters it into drinking water.

The stillsuit has subsequently cropped up in other works, including Subnautica: Below Zero. Because Subnautica: Below Zero is all about surviving in a hostile environment, you’ll need to craft several items to thrive, including the infamous stillsuit of Arrakis.

Spongebob Squarepants

There’s perhaps no two entertainment properties as diametrically opposed as Dune and SpongeBob SquarePants. Despite recent years seeing the Nickelodeon series being transformed into a show exclusively for children, fans still hold dear the memories of those early seasons.

All SpongeBob SquarePants Games, Ranked

One outstanding early episode, 'Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm,' focuses on SpongeBob and Sandy’s encounter with an Alaskan Bull Worm. If that wasn’t enough of a salute to Dune’s trademark beasts, in the episode Sandy picks up a sign that says “worm”, a reference to the warning worm signs of Arrakis.

Numerous Easter Eggs

George Lucas was motivated by tons of other artists when he was creating Star Wars. Evidently, Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novels were significant in how Lucas organized his own extensive sci-fi fantasy universe.

From Tattooine having parallels to Arrakis to the eminent presence of Spice in both universes, Star Wars exhibits a wealth of acknowledgments and references to Dune. Even in a galaxy far, far away, the influence of Dune is alive and well.

Weapon of Choice

Fatboy silm.

English musician Norman Quentin Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, has been a pioneer in the big beat music genre for decades. Cook’s 2001 release Weapon of Choice is primarily known for its Grammy Award-winning music video, but one of its lyrics stands out.

In the song, musician Bootsy Collins sings “Walk without rhythm, and it won’t attract the worm,” a line directly pulled from Dune. Cook clearly is a fan of Herbert’s series and illustrates his reverence through this sly inserted lyric.

Fallout Series

The Fallout series is famous for its abundance of easter eggs, which seem to touch all corners of the entertainment world. Most of these references are one-time instances with no impact on the overall narrative, but Fallout's nod to Frank Herbert's novels is well known in the post-nuclear wasteland.

Throughout all the Fallout games, you can find mentats, a drug which increases your intelligence and perception. In Dune, individuals known as mentats serve as an alternative to computer thinking and AI, as those things are prohibited.

Star trek: discovery just made a mirror universe theory more likely.

A TOS reference in Star Trek: Discovery's season 5 premiere suggests the USS Defiant may return from the Mirror Universe, confirming a fan theory.

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

  • The return to the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is teased by a Terran Empire logo in the trailer.
  • Captain Saru mentions the Tholian Republic as a threat, setting up for a potential return to the Mirror Universe.
  • The USS Defiant from Star Trek: The Original Series could play a key role in a bridge to the Mirror Universe in season 5.

One line from Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" makes a return to the Mirror Universe more likely, confirming a fan theory. Discovery last paid a visit to the Mirror Universe in the season 3 two-parter "Terra Firma", in which the Guardian of Forever sent Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) back to her last day as Terran Emperor. The return to the Mirror Universe was part of an elaborate test by the Guardian, now assuming the form of Carl (Paul Guilfoyle) , to prove the positive impact of Georgiou's experiences in the prime Star Trek timeline .

Now it seems that Star Trek: Discovery could be making a final return to the Mirror Universe in season 5. The final trailer for Discovery season 5 appeared to show L'ak (Elias Toufexis) standing in front of what appeared to be the symbol of the Terran Empire . Star Trek: Deep Space Nine revealed that the Terran Empire had fallen in the 24th century, but it's certainly possible that it could have risen again in the 800 years between DS9 and Discovery . How the USS Discovery's treasure hunt would lead to a return to the Mirror Universe is unclear, but there's a small hint in season 5's premiere.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 Ending & TNG Treasure Explained

Discovery’s season 5 premiere made a mirror universe theory more likely.

The Star Trek: Discovery season 5 trailer teased a tense gunfight aboard what appeared to be a 23rd century Constitution-class starship. This has led fans to speculate that it could be the USS Defiant from Star Trek: The Original Series , the starship that phased in and out of reality in "The Tholian Web". That theory gets a further boost in Discovery season 5, episode 1, as Captain Saru (Doug Jones) outlines possible threats to the Federation in the 32nd century .

Saru reveals that the Breen Imperium and the Tholian Republic are potential threats to the Federation in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 . It's even possible that either of these classic Star Trek aliens could seek the Progenitors' technology to gain an advantage over the Federation. Saru's mention of the Tholians also gives Discovery a pathway back to the Mirror Universe later in season 5, perhaps affording the chance to settle some unfinished business.

Who Are Star Trek: TOS’ Tholians And How Do They Connect To The Mirror Universe?

In Star Trek: The Original Series , season 3, episode 9, "The Tholian Web", the USS Enterprise encounters the stricken USS Defiant. The entire crew killed each other, driven insane by the effects of a spatial interphase caused by the non-humanoid Tholians. Star Trek: Enterprise revealed that it was the Tholians from the Mirror Universe that had actually dragged the USS Defiant out of their own time and reality, dragging it backwards into the 22nd century. Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) of the ISS Enterprise NX-01 stole the Defiant, but the knowledge contained inside it led to a revolt aboard the ship .

The events of Star Trek: Enterprise 's Mirror Universe episodes later informed Star Trek: Discovery season 1's Mirror Universe arc . When the USS Discovery was dragged into the Mirror Universe by the machinations of Captain Gabriel Lorca, they used the information about the USS Defiant to return to their own reality. At the end of "The Tholian Web" - which takes place after Star Trek: Discovery - the USS Defiant is phased out of reality to parts unknown. Given that the Defiant had been dragged through both time and reality, it could have ended up in the 32nd century, providing Burnham with a bridge to the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the exploits of the crew of the USS Enterprise. On a five-year mission to explore uncharted space, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) must trust his crew - Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Forest DeKelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) - with his life. Facing previously undiscovered life forms and civilizations and representing humanity among the stars on behalf of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Enterprise regularly comes up against impossible odds and diplomatic dilemmas.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise acts as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, detailing the voyages of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise in the 22nd century, a hundred years before Captain Kirk commanded the ship. Enterprise was the sixth series in the Star Trek franchise overall, and the final series before a twelve-year hiatus until the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The series stars Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer, with an ensemble cast that includes John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park, and Connor Trinneer.

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 5, Episode 1 of “ Star Trek : Discovery,” now streaming on Paramount+.

By the end of the episode, however, the mission has pushed Burnham and her crew to their limits, including slamming the USS Discovery into the path of a massive landslide threatening a nearby city. Before they risk their lives any further pursuing this object, Burnham demands that Kovich at least tell her why. (MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW.)

Kovich’s explanation evokes the classic “ Star Trek: The Next Generation ” episode “The Chase” from 1993 in which Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) — along with teams of Romulans, Klingons and Cardassians — learn that all humanoid life in the galaxy was created by a single species that existed billions of years earlier, and seeded thousands of planets with the DNA to pass along their legacy. (Along with presenting a profound vision of the origins of life, the episode also provided an imaginative explanation for why almost all the aliens in “Star Trek” basically look like humans with different kinds of forehead ridges.)

Kovich tells Burnham that the Romulan scientist was part of a team sent to discover exactly how these aliens — whom they call the Progenitors — made this happen; the object they’re seeking winds up being one part of a brand new “chase,” this time in the 32nd century, to find the Progenitors’ technology before it can fall into the wrong hands.

“I remember watching that episode and at the end of it just being blown away that there was this huge idea where we all come from,” Paradise says. “And then they’re going to have another mission the next week. I found myself wondering, ‘Well, then what? What happened? What do we do with this information? What does it mean?’”

Originally, Paradise says the “Discovery” writers’ room discussed evoking the Progenitors in Season 4, when the Discovery meets an alien species, the 10-C, who live outside of the galaxy and are as radically different from humans as one could imagine. “As we dug deeper into the season itself, we realized that it was too much to try and get in,” Paradise says.

Instead, they made the Progenitors the engine for Season 5. “Burnham and some of our other characters are on this quest for personal meaning,” Paradise says. Searching for the origins of life itself, she adds, “feels like a big thematic idea that fits right in with what we’re exploring over the course of the season, and what our characters are going through.”

That meant that Paradise finally got to help come up with the answers to the questions about “The Chase” that had preoccupied her when she was younger. “We had a lot of fun talking about what might’ve happened when [Picard] called back to headquarters and had to say, ‘Here’s what happened today,’” she says. “We just built the story out from there.”

Can't remember exactly where but there's an NPC that after a quest says "The light is with me, I'm one with the light". Probably a Draenai from Argus. Clearly a reference to Rogue One.

Princess Moira Bronzebeard 's (Blackrock Depths version) bikini and buns haircut are obvious references to Princess Leia Organa from Ep 6 and Ep4. And she ( Moira Thaurissan The Council of Three Hammers version) is keeping her haircut until now. Several other female dwarf NPCs have such buns haircut too. Players have also access to this haircut on character creation screen and in barbershop.

Tanaris is reference to Tatooine (desert place, domelike buildings, large skeletons). Racing camp in Shimmering Flats (to the north from Tanaris) in Vanilla was reference not only to Bonneville Speedway but also to Tatooine Boonta Eve Classic Podrace.

Comment by Tredain

is blade of wizardry really a light saber reference? I always thought it was a Thundarr the barbarian reference. I mean, the sun sword is basically a light saber, but I think the graphic and color is meant to be the sunsword (the name as well, since Thundarr frequently fought 'wizards' and technology was generally referred to as magic)

A parsec is equivalent to 1.1917X10^13 miles, or 3.086X10^13 kilometers for those of you in Europe. The kessle run is 14 parsecs long. In order for solo to do it in 12 parsecs, he would have had to go dangerously close to the nearby black hole. for those of you that don't already know :)

Comment by roweboy

They forgot the quest I Have a Bad Feeling About This . Maybe not a direct reference but it's said enough in Star Wars to really be the one place you really remember hearing it.

There's at least one Stormwind City Patroller that does not a lightsaber. He wanders around the inner Trade District circle.
