Gear Review: Fly Legs Up with the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

The thought of red-eye, or 5+ hour journeys through the air can invoke thoughts of bleary-eyed children fighting to stay awake through all hours of the night, much to the dismay of their travel companions and those around them. How Do You Fly Legs Up with the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow?

The First Class Kids Travel Pillow is a large, rectangular inflatable footrest with a quick-release valve. This travel footrest is designed to fit between an airplane seat and the seat in front to create a nearly seamless flat space. This allows children to more easily sleep on a plane. We are big proponents of helping kids find nap time on the road , so we were very anxious to try out this children’s travel product. The 1st Class Travel Pillow measures up to 45.5cm x 45.5cm x 30.5cm, however, it is designed to fit into nearly every seat space by simply varying the level of inflation.

The leg rest travel pillow is designed to match the width and height of airplane seats to create a comfortable, lay-flat bed for children. The main advantage of this inflatable footrest for kids is that it enables children on flights to stretch out within their own seating area rather than across multiple seats. And for anyone who has flown with children, especially on long flights, this concept seems heavenly!

Our Experience Using The First Class Kid Travel Pillow

The product was sent to us by local distributor Travel Tots . They provided us with two 1st Class Kid Travel Pillows for our upcoming trip to the Philippines . The products came in very compact packaging that was encouraging to see. I first unwrapped the packaging and tested the pillows out using a small camping air pump. The leg rest travel pillow inflated quickly and was very easy to adjust this way. Upon deflating the product, it, unfortunately, did not shrink to the same dimensions as the original packaging. This though was not unexpected, as what products ever collapse to factory size.

1st Flight with a Leg Rest Travel Pillow

For our flight to the Philippines, we flew Air Canada to Shanghai and then Philippine Airlines from Shanghai to Manila. This is where we learned about some of the politics of fly legs up type of products. When I approached the flight attendants on the 10-hour leg from Toronto to Shanghai about using the airplane footrest, I was told that Air Canada does not allow plane footrest products on their flights. This came as a surprise. It seems that there are quite a few airlines on both sides of the leg rest travel pillow debate.

After spending a day in Shanghai , we boarded our flight to Manila. We got lucky and were bumped up to first class, so for our flight to the Philippines, we did not have a chance to use the inflatable leg rest for flights.

2nd Flight with a Plane Footrest

Our next flight, however, was to Norway on Scandinavian Airlines, and, after contacting them in advance, we learned that they do allow the use of the First Class Kids pillow. In fact, when I was on the flight and preparing to set the children’s travel pillow up, the flight attendant was fascinated by the product and kept coming by to see how it was working.

Inflating the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

When I began setting up the airplane footrest, I quickly learned that not all airplanes are built the same. Travel Tots and the 1st Class Kids FAQ claims that the leg rest travel pillow can be inflated in minutes using the overhead ventilation system on planes. Our plane, however, did not have an overhead ventilation system. This meant that I would need to inflate each travel seat cushion by mouth.

This is when I learned that our travel pillows created a loud whistle when being blown up by mouth. I did my best to remain discreet on the plane, however with each mouthful of air, loud, whistling squeaks were emanating from our row of seats. Our neighbors were starting to notice. Luckily I started early, and not many people were sleeping yet. But if I were inflating the 1st Class Travel Pillow when others were sleeping, I probably would have stopped due to all the noise it created. The second issue I came across was that by the time I had inflated both pillows, I was light-headed and could have used a travel footrest of my own. And as far as I can tell, planes aren’t built for an adult-sized footrest for air travel.

Deflating the First Class Kids Travel Pillow

Where inflating this airplane footrest was a chore, deflating the travel leg rest was a breeze. This process involved a simple turn of a dial and most of the air escaped almost immediately. From there I only needed to tightly fold the travel footrest to force the rest of the air out before folding it up and placing it back in our carry on luggage. I was able to deflate both units and put them away in less time than it took me to inflate one of them.

The double airflow system of the First Class Kids Travel Pillow works very well. There is a large opening for deflation and a smaller, vent-controlled opening on top of it for inflating. The vent did a good job of allowing me to inflate the travel pillow by mouth without all of the air rushing back out each time I took a breath. The only issue I had with it was that when turning the smaller vent valve, the larger dial often turns as well-meaning that sometimes two hands or nimble fingers are necessary.

What We Love about the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

• Very easy to fit the Leg Rest Travel Pillow to fill the space between seats.
• It makes for a very comfortable travel experience for children.
• Very easy to deflate and put away at the end of a flight.
• Well designed inflation valve doesn’t require Olympic sized lungs.

Where We Think the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow Can Improve

• It can cause an annoying loud whistle when inflating.
• A bit bulky to travel with once out of the original packaging.
• Only practical when the child is in a window seat or the middle seat of a middle row.

Tips For When You Fly Legs Up Using the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

• Not all airlines allow an inflatable footrest. Make sure you contact the airlines ahead of time to ensure that the product is allowed. Refunds are not available for open products.
• Bring a small manual hand pump in case there are no overhead vents on the aircraft.

Do We Recommend Using an Airplane Leg Rest Like the First Class Travel Pillow?

There is a big market for a portable footrest. With more and more families choosing adventure travel destinations, the use of a leg rest travel pillow for children is an often-appreciated luxury for long flights. There is no doubt that it helped our boys have an excellent sleep on their flight to Norway. There are definitely some design issues that we think could be improved with this product, however, if sleep is as valuable to you as it is for us, the benefits of a plane footrest is worth considering.

Very informative. We have the same pillow and plan the fly with SQ in premium economy.

From your pictures, it appears your kid has more leg room/has gap. Did the pillow stay still during the flight? Did you have to put something to hold the pillow in place?

Because the 1st Class Travel Pillow is inflatable, it can conform to the available space between the seats. There was no gap beneath, rather, the gap might appear if the person in front reclines/straightens their seat. The pillow stayed perfectly in place for the entire flight with no need to adjust it.

Maybe it sounds crazy but I carry real pillows with me when traveling. They're small in size, but still, three of them take a lot of space. Perhaps it's time to go for inflatable ones :) As for leg rest travel pillows, I never even knew they existed, but I can see from your post that they can be really useful.

Looks like an interesting product but I could see the hassles. One the noise you mentioned while blowing it up. Having to move it out of the way when not in use and the fact some airlines just don't allow it. Seems like it might be handy in some cases though.

I would love to have one of these of my own, they are a great idea! It must be difficult to design a one-size-fits-all product when there are so many different airlines and aircraft, although I'm surprised that some airlines don't allow them at all. I suppose for safety reasons they could only be used by the window or somewhere where people don't need to walk should there be an emergency.

Thank you for your review. We are always glad to receive feedback and see photos of passengers using our 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow and looking very comfortable.

We have heard of the whistling noise on some pillows! We have found that a small amount of petroleum jelly (or similar) fixes or reduces the noise. Try putting a small amount of petroleum jelly on around the black areas which are the seals of the valve. http://www.1stclasskid.com/faq/trouble-shooting/ Keep working the petroleum jelly around the black rubber parts (top & bottom) so it helps seal up around the edges. Leave inflated for a while and repeat until noise has improved.

Due to new plane interior designs that do not have overhead vents, we see the need to have a pump option so we are presently resourcing a pump that is ideal for our special valve. Review: 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

When your son or daughter becomes too large or fidgety to remain as a lap child, and you finally decide to plunk down the change for a seat, not all problems go away…

• Why does this kid keep dropping toys on the floor?

The $29.95  1st Class Kid Travel Pillow aims to answer and solve these questions.

So… what is it? It’s basically a balloon that can be inflated and deflated. This balloon is soft, and it’s shaped to wedge down to fill in the area that would be, for adults, the legroom in front of the seat.

We tested this with our 18 month old son on two different flights: SFO-JFK in Virgin America Economy Class and JFK-SFO in JetBlue Economy Class. For our first flight out, we didn’t inflate the pillow until my son started to look tired and ready to nap.

Inflating the pillow is pretty easy. There’s a valve that opens up, and the instruction manual suggests that you hold it up to the air conditioning vent above the seat. I felt a bit odd doing this, as I wondered if people might be curious about this large inflatable thing that I was holding up high to inflate, but it actually did work to get the bulk of the pillow inflated. I then screwed the primary valve on, and I popped the part off that lets you inflate manually by blowing into it. I had the pillow puffed up in no time. Note: the manual warns against inflating it before you hit cruising altitude, as the increase in pressure may cause it to pop. Once my son was ready to sleep, we stuck the pillow down there and made him a little bed.

It actually worked! We were able to get the little guy to fall asleep, and he looked pretty comfy! The pillow isn’t perfect. It doesn’t take the seat and turn it into a perfect mattress. We found that the pillow was a bit higher than the seat, so our son was on a bit of an angle. Even so, he was sleeping in a much more natural position than if he were across our lap or wedged against the window. He didn’t end up sleeping that long on the plane ride out, unfortunately. His nap was only 30 minutes or so. We wondered if he was comfortable or not, and we figured we’d try it again on our flight home. Maybe he just wasn’t that tired.

On our way back west, we didn’t wait to inflate the pillow. We just inflated it immediately after we hit cruising altitude, and I recommend this approach. We bought this pillow so our son could sleep, but it turns out that it just gave him way more space to play. He had more room to squirm around. Sometimes he sat on the pillow. Sometimes he sat on the seat. We ended up picking way less toys up off the floor. This time when he went to sleep, he really conked out.

He snuggled up with his lovey , and he passed out quickly. This time, he slept super well. He stayed in that position you see above for over two hours, which is in line with how long his better naps are these days. Also, I will let you know that no artificial sleep aids were used in the testing of this product :-). We decided against using Benadryl or anything like that. Since we started traveling with a baby, flights haven’t been the same. They’ve been joyful in many ways, but we don’t get to kick back and relax like we used to. With Zachary passed out for two hours, we found time to enjoy the fast, free JetBlue WiFi and enjoy our flight home.

I definitely recommend the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow . At only $30, it’s not very expensive. Considering that it’s essentially just a balloon, it deflates to be packed easily. It worked great for our toddler. We’ll have another chance to give it an even more rigorous test when we have a family trip to London in a few months! I’ll make sure to report back!

Most kid’s travel pillows you can find are U-shaped pillows on the market. A neck pillow is just one thing that could help your child’s comfort, but another travel pillow can help you and your child have a comfortable flight.

You can still opt to get the memory foam neck pillows on the market, but you can add the 1st Class Kid travel pillow to help with their dangling feet on a tall plane seat.

This article is my review of the 1st Class Kid brand travel pillow and how it can provide more comfort for your child while traveling so they keep still and do not slide and move forward out of their sleep.

You’ll find that this travel pillow can be a companion to your typical kid’s travel neck pillow and an eye mask, giving your kid a comfortable flight.

Travel With a 3-Year-Old

Since his birth, we’ve traveled a lot with our 3-year-old. We have worn him in a carrier as a lap infant. He’s traveled in both his infant car seat and his toddler seat. He has even flown without anything in his seat. When I heard about the 1st Class Kid travel pillow, I knew I needed to check it out. (This post contains affiliate links.)

My husband and I try to be courteous travelers. We know it’s our choice to travel with our kids, and we aim to set ourselves up for success. I bring busy bags, tons of snacks, headphones, and an iPad.

However, the problem we consistently run into is our son kicking the seat in front of us. He doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. Our son is used to moving around, and some part of him is always moving.

Thankfully, that’s where the 1st Class Kid travel pillow comes in.

1st Class Kid Travel Pillow

The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is an inflatable pillow that easily fits in a carry-on bag. When deflated, it took up minimal space in my backpack. It fits on the floor of an airplane in between the passenger seats.

Interestingly, it’s designed so young children can spread out to sleep rather than lie across other accompanying passengers or on the floor. This helps them sit on a plane in an ergonomic position.

We tested the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow on our flights from Seattle to Madrid. This was our son’s first international fight in over a year, and we weren’t sure if he’d be able to sleep comfortably as he’d grown.

Our flight left at 7 pm, and we decided to re-create our son’s bed as much as possible. We were unable to use the air vents to inflate the pillow, so my husband blew it up manually. We put it in front of our son’s seat and brought out his special blanket.

However, it took a while for him to fall asleep. He was very excited about our trip and being in an airplane. But, eventually, he stretched out on the pillow and slept.

We left during the afternoon for our flight home, and we didn’t expect our son to sleep much. But we had a long flight from Paris to Chicago and figured we’d try out the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow again. It was even more helpful this time!

Our son was able to lounge comfortably while he watched movies. Finally, he quickly fell asleep for a really long nap.

What my husband and I appreciated the most about the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow is that it prevented our 3-year-old from kicking the seat in front of him. His legs rested on the pillow, and he didn’t have the opportunity to swing. My husband and I didn’t worry about our son bothering the passenger in front of him!

Additionally, I rested my feet on it at one point during our flight. I angled myself in my seat, and my son and I rested our feet on the pillow. I’ve used my carry-on backpack as a footrest in the past with minimal success. The 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow surprised me with how comfortable it was. I also didn’t worry about crushing anything in my carry-on.

I would definitely recommend the 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow to families with small children who are heading on a long flight. This is a perfect travel gift idea for your friends who love to travel with their children.

Additionally, it takes up minimal space in a carry-on bag and is easy to inflate. It prevented our son from kicking the seat in front of him. He was also able to sleep well on our international flights.

You can make this more fun by buying a washable cover with a fun and cute animal or travel design. 

We will bring this on any flight long enough to watch a movie and will always add this to our travel packing list . It’s so convenient for any long trip, and we’ll add this with the rest of our car accessories for road trips .

Lily Allen has sparked backlash after revealing that she has put herself in first class and her daughter in economy for an upcoming flight to London.

The singer made the confession while speaking to her childhood friend Miquita Oliver on their BBC podcast  Miss Me?  

Allen told her co-host that when returning to London for her friend’s birthday with her 11-year-old daughter Ethel she had decided to sit apart from her.

“We are flying to London today to come and see you for your birthday — I’m going in first class, she’s going in economy,” she said.

“You know what that is?” Oliver said as Allen joked, “Selfish?”

Oliver continued, “The circle of life. That baby is now coming to London because you live in New York for my 40th birthday, which we are having at the end of the road we grew up on.”

Allen replied, “There’s a trend at the moment on social media of people defiantly saying that they won’t give up their seats for children on airplanes,” to which her friend agreed, saying, “Fair enough. Why would you give your seat to a kid if you paid for it? It’s not like a train.”

However, Allen then went on to argue that airline passengers should be mindful of families who haven’t been sat next to each other.

“Quite often when you’re a big group the airline will separate the seats,” she explained.

“You’ll get to the airport and they’ll tell you your child is sat [away from you] and so when you get on the plane you have to ask people if they don’t mind moving so you can sit next to your children.”

“Obviously it’s inconvenient for everybody involved but I find it fascinating that it’s now become something that gives you clout on social media when you’re like, ‘A mum came up to me and asked me to move and I told them to f–k off.’ Is this what we’ve become? Well done, you’ve made a family sit apart from each other.”

Allen insisted that some families may not have had the chance to book seats in advance and shared her wish for people to be a bit nicer to others.

“Says me who’s putting myself in first class while my child is alone in the back of the plane. I don’t want to sit with my kid,” laughed the singer.

Her remarks have left social media divided, with some hitting out at the star for appearing to contradict herself.

“Alright for some isn’t it,” remarked one, while another said, “Poor flight attendant being left to do your job!”

However, others supported the singer, claiming that her refusal to bring her child into first class will help keep them “grounded”.

The Pokrovsky Cathedral is an Old Believers’ church. This community exists in Rostov since the end of the 18th century and was represented mostly by wealthy people. It was thanks to the means of one of the merchants that this church was built in 1913. Get directions .

Horizon (Mall)

The biggest mall of Rostov is the place to find what you need. Horizon offers a large number of stores of big international brands. The mall is also nice for leisure, with an aquapark, a cinema, a bowling, restaurants and karaoke.

Pokrovsky Park

Don River Embankment

This lovely pedestrian zone of about 3 kilometres is a favourite place for walking and cheerful festivities of all citizens. Along the Don Embankment , you will find statues of legends from the history of Donland, as well as restaurants and cafés. Astor Center (Mall)

The 3-story Astor Center is the best place for fashion-addicts. Here you can find elite boutiques of world-famous clothes and jewelry brands, an exhibition space, some excellent restaurants and a karaoke-club.

Frunze Park

Frunze Park is the main park of the Nakhichevan district. It contains a memorial complex with an eternal flame in the middle, devoted to the soldiers who fell in WWII. The well-groomed park further includes a playground and some benches. Get directions .

Nakhichevan Bazar

The history of this market goes back to the late 19th century, when an Armenian settlement appeared near the Rostov fortress. The Nakhichevan Bazar offers very tasty and fresh food, based on traditional Armenian markets. At times you may also hear the sounds of a duduk here.

The House of Margarita Chernova is a lovely and richly decorated mansion that was built in 1899 as a gift to the actress Margarita Chernova from her admirer, merchant Paramonov.
