Top Tips for Getting to Leipzig

Leipzig is to the south west of Berlin in the east of Germany and while not quite as easy to get to as the capital, you have plenty of options available. While planning such a trip may seem daunting and time consuming, it is worth it to explore the fascinating city of Leipzig. Plus, with our top tips below, you will be able to quickly arrange the travelling aspect and save money at the same time. We will be waiting to welcome you on one of our tours when you arrive!

Airport Parking

If you plan to drive to your departure airport, don’t forget to book your airport parking in advance. By planning ahead and booking as far in advance as possible, you can save up to 60%, compared to last-minute and on the day bookings. Combined with using a comparison website, you can easily make big savings! A great example is Parkhero for UK travellers. This website helps holidaymakers find cheap Manchester Airport parking and many other airports across the country. These sorts of websites are simple to use as you just need to choose your airport and enter your travel dates for a full breakdown of the available parking options. To find a similar website for your country of origin, type ‘compare …airport parking’ into a search engine.

Choosing an airport

There is one main airport in Leipzig and two nearby in Berlin. The easiest to visit Leipzig is of course to fly directly to the nearest airport, but keep in mind that it is small with limited choice of flights. It may be a better idea to fly into one of the Berlin airports where there are many budget flights from across Europe and easy transport links to Leipzig. Below we will show you your transfer options from all three airports.

Leipzig Halle Airport

The airport is to the northwest of Leipzig city centre and you will find flights across Europe and North Africa with airlines include Eurowings, Lufthansa, Condor, Corendon amongst others.

Transfer options

  • Train station directly at the airport with local and regional trains to Leipzig and beyond
  • Lines S5 and S5X operate from the airport every 30 minutes and it takes just 14 minutes to reach Leipzig central station
  • Tickets cost around €4 and you can buy them at the airport station (remember to validate your ticket)
  • Taxi rank is outside Terminal B with taxis taking around 30 minutes to reach Leipzig city centre
  • Taxis cost between €30 and €40 but make sure that the driver has the meter turned on

Berlin Schoenefeld Airport

This airport is the second largest in Berlin and is used as a base by Ryanair and easyJet. It provides flights mostly across Europe with some flights to the Middle East and Turkey. The airport is located 18 km southeast of Berlin and almost 200 km from Leipzig.

  • Take the train to either Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Berlin Südkreuz stations for connections to Leipzig
  • From the airport to Leipzig it takes between 1 hour 40 and 2 hours and costs between €90 and €100 depending on how far in advance you book and which class you choose
  • Bus station is right outside the airport
  • Flixbus offers routes to Leipzig that take just over 2 hours and tickets start at around €14

Berlin Brandenburg Airport

Berlin’s largest airport offering flights to destinations across the world with a great variety of airlines to choose from. It is a great option for travellers from outside of Europe. The airport is located just 30 km to the south of Berlin and 185 km from Leipzig.

  • You can reach either Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Berlin Südkreuz stations in around 20-40 minutes by train from the airport and find connections to Leipzig
  • You can find connections from Flixbus to Leipzig as well and journeys take around 3 hours with tickets starting at around €15

Arriving by train or coach

You will also easily find train and coach connections to Leipzig from across Europe with a good network of options available across Germany. You can find international trains directly to Leipzig or trains that stop in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and other large cities from where you can find a connection. The same is true of coach transfers with great value journeys offered by the pan-European Flixbus network. Make sure to book in advance for the best prices!

So, there you have it, your travel options for reaching us in Leipzig. If you want more information about what you can do in the city, make sure to check out our blog!

Day Trip to Leipzig from Berlin: What to do in Leipzig in One Day

This post contains links which earn me a small commission at no cost to you.

Ali Garland, Berlin expert & long term resident What to Do

Leipzig isn’t too far from Berlin, and it’s a really interesting city to visit. While you could easily spend several days there, I think you can see the highlights in Leipzig in one day . You can take a day trip by train since there are many direct connections.

In this post, I’ll show you how to get from Berlin to Leipzig , and what to do on a Leipzig day trip from Berlin .

What you'll find here

Book a tour for your Leipzig day trip

If you only have a day in Leipzig, a sightseeing tour like this one could be the perfect way to see a lot of sights in a short amount of time.

Why should you take a day trip from Berlin to Leipzig

old city hall and Marktplatz Leipzig day trip from Berlin

If you’re spending more than 3 days in Berlin , it’s a good idea to plan a day trip so you can see a little more of Germany. Leipzig is a great choice for a day trip since it’s not too far from Berlin and the main attractions and the city center are compact and easy to explore.

Leipzig was in East Germany during the Cold War when the country was split into two sections. But Leipzig has its own unique story to tell about that era, and the city played an important role in ending communist rule.

This city is also rich in culture and arts. Many famous musicians, composers, playwrights, and writers called Leipzig their home at one point or another.

Martin Luther, an important religious figure who began the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, also had strong ties to Leipzig.

The old town is really gorgeous, and it’s well worth a day trip simply to see a different city with interesting architecture and to soak up the atmosphere.

I’ve also included Leipzig on my one week Germany itinerary for Berlin and eastern Germany . If Leipzig isn’t already on your Germany bucket list , add it now!

Leipzig day trip from Berlin

Where to stay in Leipzig

Leipzig is such a great city, you might decide you’d rather spend a night or two there as a weekend trip from Berlin . The city certainly has enough things to do to fill more than one day. Here are some hotels we recommend for an overnight trip to Leipzig.

How to get from berlin to leipzig by train.

Getting around in Germany is pretty simple, and getting from Berlin to Leipzig is no exception.

From Berlin to Leipzig, there are good connections by train using Deutsche Bahn , which makes it an easy way to get there. The ICE train from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Some trains also stop in Gesundbrunnen or Spandau, and they all stop in Südkreuz, so check which is the right train station to use depending on where you’re staying in Berlin .

There are regional trains from Berlin to Leipzig, but they will take a lot longer, involve one or two switches, and they won’t necessarily even save you any money. Some routes I saw were actually more expensive than the ICE route even when only looking a few days ahead of time.

>>Check prices and train schedules on the Deutsche Bahn website .

How to Get to Leipzig from Berlin by Bus

Flixbus - getting from Berlin to Leipzig

If you’re on a tight budget, there is an option to get to Leipzig from Berlin using FlixBus instead of the train.

The bus can save you a lot of money. But know that it takes longer, a bit over two hours for the shortest option.

Always compare FlixBus vs Deutsche Bahn to see which one fits your schedule and budget.

Gaze upon the Nikolaikirche

St Nicholas Church Leipzig

Known in English as St Nicholas Church, this Leipzig landmark is the place to start your journey in the city. With roots that date back to 1165, the church as it is seen today is the same as it was in 1797.

Aside from the eye-catching design, the church is also famous for being a key point of protest that saw the downfall of the East German Communist government. Further back in history, Bach served as a choir master at this church.

Visit St Thomas Church

Another church with history that you should visit on your Leipzig day trip from Berlin, St Thomas church has lots of history and ties to several important figures.

Martin Luther was a preacher here, and two centuries later, Bach served here as a choir master. It’s also visually stunning.

Learn about history at the Museen im Grassi

One of the largest museum complexes in Germany, the Museen im Grassi houses three museums: one dedicated to ethnography, one to art, and another to musical instruments. The building was constructed in the 1920s in the famed Bauhaus style.

Dine at Auerbachs Keller

For a classic dining experience head to Auerbachs Keller (“cellar” in English). This historic tavern is the place to go for time-honored Saxon cuisine, cocktails and live music.

It has the accolade of being the oldest restaurant in the city. It’s even mentioned in Goethe’s 1770s play Faustus as a must-do thing to do in Leipzig!

People-watch at Augustusplatz

The city’s largest square – and one of the largest in Europe – Augustusplatz is the place to go to soak up some local atmosphere. It was once a beautiful plaza, but sadly many of its buildings were destroyed during World War II.

Today it’s more of a modern marvel, and a good place to take a breather.

Stop by the Old City Hall

Leipzig old Rathaus what to do in Leipzig in one day

Leipzig’s Old City Hall sits right in the center of the city and stands as a testament to the German Renaissance. Built in 1556, it remained the seat of Leipzig City Council until the 20th century, when in 1909 it became the Museum of City History.

So as well as admiring the building’s exterior, you can head inside and learn all about the long history of Leipzig.

Stroll through the Marktplatz

what to do in Leipzig Marktplatz

While you’re admiring the city hall building, you might notice the huge square you’re standing in. This is Leipzig’s central square, simply called Marktplatz.

This large square hosts a weekly market as well as events throughout the year. Leipzig’s biggest Christmas market is held here, so if you’re visiting during the Christmas season, you should definitely check it out.

Marvel at the Krochhochaus

Krochhochaus was Leipzig’s first skyscraper. Hochhaus actually means skyscraper in German.

Built in 1928, at 11-storeys high it was a controversial addition to the city at the time. Today it’s a neat slice of history that makes for a striking landmark on Augustusplatz.

Admire the masterpieces at Museum der Bildenden Künste

Art lovers should make a beeline to the Museum der Bildenden Künste. This giant glass and concrete cube is where you’ll find an array of fine art from throughout the ages.

Stroll through its wide passages and courtyards and enjoy the outlook onto the urban city – all while taking in everything from Franz Hals to Claude Monet.

Learn about Leipzig’s recent history

Like Berlin, Leipzig has a interesting history from the Cold War era. To learn about life during this time, check out the Gedenkstätte Museum in der “Runden Ecke”.

This museum has displays on the Stasi (secret policy) and what life was like in East Germany. Also interesting is that it’s located in a former secret police building.

Go crazy for Bach at the Bach Museum

Leipzig Bach statue 1 week in Germany itinerary

This museum celebrates the life and legacy of Johann Sebastien Bach, who lived, worked and died in Leipzig.

Featuring interactive exhibitions and packed full with interesting memorabilia from the Baroque composer, here you’ll be able to see original manuscripts and instruments. This is a must for music lovers.

Sip beer at Kaiserbad

Situated next to a converted power plant, Kaiserbad is part of the regeneration of Plagwitz, a former industrial area of the city. At this restaurant you can dine on diverse dishes and sip on 20 different kinds of beer on tap.

Tour the City Harbor

Leipzig City Harbor is a scenic waterside setting that can be explored either on the water itself, or by pedal power. If you feel like getting on the water, then there are a number of options.

Canoes are available to rent, or you could take a guided tour via dragonboat. It’s particularly beautiful in the summer months when the harbor is alive with locals and visitors chilling out.

Admire the view from the Panorama Tower

view of Leipzig from Panorama Tower

Leipzig’s highest landmark, Panorama Tower is a 36-story skyscraper that looks out over the Augustusplatz and beyond. It’s the tallest skyscraper in the city and was actually designed to look like an open book.

Visitors can travel to the top and soak up the vista from its observation deck on the 31st floor for a small fee. This is a great activity to include on your day trip to Leipzig.

Stroll along Madler Passage

Right in the center of the city, the Madler Passage is an exquisite shopping promenade that runs for almost a mile.

Originating as a place for people to shop for porcelain and other ceramics, today it’s an elegant place to browse, boasting exclusive shops and charming eateries.

Visit the Monument to the Battle of the Nations

Monument to the Battle of the Nations Leipzig day trip from Berlin

One of the best known landmarks in Leipzig, the Monument to the Battle of Nations is an icon. It was completed in 1913 to commemorate the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars – the biggest battle of the 19th century.

In the front, there’s a reflection pool called the Lake of Tears. Steps up to the monument allow great views of the city.

Explore Moritzbastei

This renovated 500-year-old fortress is the only remaining part of the city’s historic defenses.

But far from being a museum, today it’s a venue for cultural and creative events and gatherings throughout the year. It’s a popular hangout for visitors and students who come to enjoy the unique atmosphere.

See a show at Leipzig Opera

Boasting more than 325 years of history – making it the third-oldest municipal operatic venue in Europe (after Venice and Hamburg) – the Leipzig Opera has long been the flagship venue for classical music in the city.

The focus here is mainly Wagner as Leipzig is his birthplace.

Swing by Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei

For some industrial history, head to Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei. Spread across 10 hectares on the outskirts of the city, this former cotton mill was the biggest cotton mill in Europe during its heyday in 1907.

It was a town in itself, complete with workers’ homes, allotments and a kindergarten. Now revitalized, it’s a creative hub boasting studios and galleries. You can take a guided tour to learn more.

Have a cup of coffee at Zum Arabischen Coffee Baum

Coffee has been served at this venerable establishment since 1711, making it Germany’s oldest coffee house.

Numerous notable figures have passed through its timeworn interiors and sipped on coffee, including Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt, as well as world leaders from Napoleon to Bill Clinton!

Admire the many statues

Goethe statue in Leipzig

Several important historical figures had ties to Leipzig, and today they are honored with statues throughout the city. Here’s a list of a few of them.

Behind the Old City Hall, admire the statue of Goethe. Goethe is considered to be one of Germany’s most important literary figures.

Near the St Thomas Church and the Bach Museum, you’ll find the New Bach Memorial Statue and the Old Bach Memorial Statue. He was so important, they honored him with two statues!

Not far from the Bach Museum also sits the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Memorial Statue. He was another famous German composer.

A little ways north of the Marktplatz is a statue honoring Richard Wagner, a famous composer.

Travel to Leipzig

Travel planning and tips.

Are you planning a journey to Leipzig or its surrounding region and still looking for the best way to get from A to B? Here, you can find all the important information you need to plan your journey as well as useful tips on how to get to Leipzig's sights and travel around the local area in a cheap and environmentally friendly way.

By train to Leipzig

Leipzig Central Station

Arriving in Europe's best station

airport tour leipzig

Located right in the city centre , Leipzig Central Station is the ideal place to start your tour of the city. From there, you can easily and conveniently travel to all districts of Leipzig on the "Bimmel", as the tram is called by the locals.

But before you leave, take a couple of minutes in Europe's largest terminus station to have a look at this monument which is now over 100 years old. We think you will agree that there are few stations as beautiful as this one. This was even officially confirmed in 2021. Leipzig Central Station is the best station in the whole of Europe .

Furthermore, Leipzig Central Station is much more than a travel hub. It is also the number one shopping destination in Leipzig. In more than 140 shops at the Promenaden Shopping Centre, you can find everything you are looking for as well as everything you didn't know you needed.

Tip : Learn more about this impressive building on a guided tour of Leipzig Central Station. You can find about this and other guided tours here: Tours and Experiences .

City Tunnel Leipzig

The fastest direct connection to the city centre

airport tour leipzig

There are two other stops in between: Leipzig's "Marktplatz" (market square), the heart of Leipzig, and Wilhelm-Leuschner Platz. Both stations are perfect places to start your discovery tour of Leipzig.

The City Tunnel has transformed Leipzig Central Station from a pure terminus into a combined terminus and transit station, which connects the city with the surrounding region.

Tip : The City Tunnel is the perfect route if you want to travel quickly from A to B or when it is raining. However, to really experience Leipzig, we recommend you take a walk or select a combined tour.

By coach to Leipzig

Comfortable and cheap

Travelling by coach

Today, coaches connect many of Germany's important cities. You can also enjoy relaxed and low-budget travel to Leipzig this way.

The new, modern coach station is located at the eastern end of Leipzig Central Station and is therefore perfectly connected to the city centre. Some coaches serve the Leipzig Trade Fair and Leipzig/Halle airport. The easiest way to book coach tickets is online from the appropriate company.

Tip: Many companies offer cheaper tickets the earlier you book. Therefore, it is worth planning ahead and comparing prices.

Travelling to Leipzig by plane

Travelling by plane

Leipzig/Halle airport is located at Schkeuditzer Kreuz (A9, A14), 18 km from Leipzig and 23 km from Halle.

The airport offers direct flights to the major German cities of Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf and Munich as well as to the international cities of Vienna, Paris, Dubrovnik, Tivat, Lamezia Terme, Palma de Mallorca, Antalya, Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. Many other destinations in Europe and worldwide can be reached via the German hubs at Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Berlin Brandenburg Airports. Thanks to the fast Intercity Express (ICE) connection from Berlin to Leipzig, it only takes 1 hour and 14 minutes to get here.

Once you have landed in Leipzig, the tram takes you to the city centre in 12 mins, or to Leipzig's "Messegelände" (Exhibition Centre) in 6 mins.

Redbull Arena – Arrival and Departure

Relaxed travel to the stadium

The Red Bull Arena is located very close to the city centre. On the one hand, this is a great advantage. However, on the other hand, when the Red Bulls' matches sell out, there are not enough parking spaces in the close vicinity.

To ensure you arrive relaxed and in good time for the kick-off to cheer on your team, we recommend that you use public transport.

The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (municipal public transportation services) are well-prepared for the crowds of visitors and run extra services .

airport tour leipzig

You can also start right in the city centre if you would like to spend a day cycling around the Leipzig region.  Grab a bike and hop onto a tram that will take you to the outskirts of Leipzig. Here, numerous  biketrails through the Leipzig New Lake District and the Saxon landscape with its castles and heaths  are waiting to welcome you. Explore the countryside along the Mulde and Elbe bike trails , tour along trails through the Saxon Obstland (fruit country) or discover the former lignite mining areas in the New Lake District.

Tip : In Leipzig, no one needs to bring their own bicycle. You can just use one of the many  bicycle rental services  in Leipzig and its surrounding region.

Carsharing and ride pooling

Sustainable car mobility

Protects the environment and your wallet

Carsharing involves travelling by car together with other people. It is cheaper and also good for the environment . As a customer of a provider, simply register by filling in your contact details on a website or an app. Once this is done, you can book any vehicle at any time.

To make sure travel is cost-efficient and saves energy , ride pooling involves several people with the same destination sharing a vehicle instead of each person travelling alone by car. Therefore, ride pooling is comparable to car pooling. However, it is managed by an algorithm so that you just hop in and get out at your destination as you would in a taxi. One of the largest providers in this sector who also operates in Leipzig is CleverShuttle and all their cars are electric.

Tip: With LeipzigMOVE , you can use carsharing and other mobility services in just one app.
