Whilst she may not have the same profile as her bandmates in Pistol Annies - Ashley Monroe features in more critics year-end lists, and Miranda Lambert is one of the biggest country stars on the planet - Angaleena Presley is unquestionably the real deal, as her 80 minute set at Bush Hall more than ably proved.

Her take on standard country tropes - love gone bad, small town life, and the demon booze all feature prominently at one point or another - is refreshingly modern, and better suited to a more liberal-minded UK audience. As she said herself, you won't hear "Knocked Up" on the radio in the States (kudos to Whispering Bob for playing it on Radio 2). As with all good country singers, and all good singers generally, Angaleena is first a foremost a teller of stories. And the stories she tells always have something to hook you in, even if you don't have a shared experience of what she is singing about.

She plays most of her "American Middle Class" album, and the songs take on more life than on the record and are greeted rapturously - not just by the hardcore fans who she affectionately refers to as stalkers! This is helped by her often laugh out loud funny between song banter, where we get the occasional insight into how these songs came to be, or sometimes just a few words to make us chuckle.

She plays three new songs, and they are warmly received like old friends. When she finishes playing them, she asks us if we would buy a record with those songs on it. Unhesitatingly, the answer from the crowd is a resounding yes.

She rounds out the set with a song from the last Pistol Annies record ("Unhappily Married", which gets its own amusing preamble) and her own take on "Fastest Girl In Town", co-written with (and a hit for) her friend Miranda.

Perhaps the greatest compliment I could make is that it's one of the only times in recent memory I've actually known an audience to just shut up and listen through a whole show. From start to finish, Angaleena is an effortlessly charming host, and she does touching and funny in equal measures. All with the voice of a whisky-drenched angel. To use the word she used to described her support acts, Angaleena is "legit", and I'm already looking forward to seeing her tour a new record in the hopefully near future.

Thursday 20th July. The Borderline. Angaleena Presley. It’s a pleasure to welcome Ms Presley back to these shores after her visit a couple of years ago to the same venue. That time she was accompanied by a scratch band but its solo acoustic tonight.

First a mention for the talented Danni Nichols who provided a perfect thirty minute opening set of smoky folky acoustic soul music that whetted the appetite before the main act.

Presley, formerly a third of the Pistol Annies is on a mission tonight. Berating the Nashville establishment (and let’s face it she’s not the only voice there, Isbell and Sturgill spring to mind) she delivers a perfect eighty minutes of heartfelt autobiographical story songs. Bemoaning the lack of female artists in the country charts this runs completely contrary to what is largely a golden age of talented female country artists like Ashley Monroe, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Margo Price, Nikki Lane and Courtney Marie Andrews to name a few. In an age when Florida Georgia Line are massive there truly is no justice in the world that these talented women are not getting airtime. Shame on you America.

Back to the show, with the set drawing from her two solo albums and a couple or so of Pistol songs she is witty, self-deprecating and funny between songs exchanging banter with the audience at every step. It creates a lovely familial environment for us to sit back (or stand), relax and feel genuinely part of the show. Given London audiences reputation for non-participation and indifference there was singing along to nearly every song much to Angaleena’s surprise and delight. We even provided some whistling backing at one stage but I’m not convinced our whistling was any better than she could have done.

Difficult to choose any highlights tonight but ‘Knocked up’ is a great crowd pleaser, the spitting feathers ‘Country’ and the deeply personal ‘Pain pills’ about her brother really do standout.

One of my favourite gigs of the year. Keep the faith Angaleena, even if Nashville doesn’t, we still love you but we won’t bless your heart.

After a series of rock and blues gig recently it’s good to be back at the iconic Borderline, albeit that they have covered up the logo on the wall behind the stage. Tonight is straight shootin country from Kentucky’s own Angaleena Presley.

There’s a good crowd waiting expectantly for Ms Presley who is over here for her first ever London dates to support her debut solo album American Middle Class. She is joined by a four piece scratch band tonight date supplementing the other largely solo acoustic dates. With no fuss or frills she takes to the stage and they launch straight into the set.

The crowd are enthusiastic and are hooked from note one. It’s a good mixture of oldies, newbies, Pistol Annie’s songs, covers and some that have yet to see the light of day on record. The songs are all intertwined with self-deprecating stories of her life and indeed the new album is largely autobiographical in origin.

There’s an amusing story about her son singing one of her songs in the playground and with trepidation she asks which one, the response is ‘Knocked Up’ which is about life with her first husband and how the little boy came to be.

The band are dismissed for a ‘pee break’ and the shows continues in a hushed intimacy with just Angaleena and her guitar stamped with ‘Holler’ on the fret board. She seems genuinely delighted to be here in what is probably a venue the fraction of the size she is used to play in. The crowd are appreciative, laugh in the right places and sing along to a lot of the tunes.

As well as a great voice the thing that sets Angaleena apart from the conveyor belt of female country singers are the songs. They are largely story based focusing on real life and not some schmaltzy showbiz vacuum.

The band is back and we finish with ‘Lemon Drop’ and its over in what doesn't feel like the ninety minutes it was. I won’t be alone in welcoming her back across the pond real soon. Bless her heart

Really enjoyed the show. Angaleena was funny as well putting on a fantastic performance. Loved the venue too and also her opening act was thoroughly enjoyable.

“A lot of folks first heard of me when I wrote a song called ‘Knocked Up’ that Heidi Newfield cut on her first solo record,” Angaleena said. “People would say, ‘God, honey, that song has balls.’ But I just wrote what I knew. I was pregnant, not married, and felt like the shame of my family.” It was songs like “Knocked Up” and “Look It Up” (a Top 20 single for Ashton Shepherd) that began drawing the attention of writers and artists on Music Row.

“I was in the middle of a divorce, living in the ghetto, sleeping next to my son who was three. And one night at like 2 a.m., I got a call from my friend, Ashley Monroe, and Miranda Lambert,” Presley recalls. “They had been listening to my record – and probably drinking a lot – and asked me if I wanted to start a band with them. I almost hung up ‘cause I thought it was a prank call, but I went ahead and told them ‘yes,’ and I’m glad I did.” 

The result -- Pistol Annies, the critically acclaimed and commercially successful band signed to RCA. Their first single, “Hell on Heels,” was written by Angaleena, Miranda, and Ashley and was certified gold by the RIAA. Their album, also titled  Hell on Heels , debuted at No. 1 on country sales charts and was picked by many critics, including The New York Times, as the best album in any genre of 2011. The follow up  Annie Up  was released in May 2013 and found the trio again topping sales charts and performing on the  Today Show ,  The Tonight Show ,  The View  and many more. In 2014 Angaleena released her solo album American Middle Class .

“It’s still surreal for me,” Angaleena reflects. “It feels like you can bang your head against a wall trying to knock it down for a long time, and one day it crumbles, and it was all worth it.” 

Never one to slow down, Angaleena has continued her role as a prolific writer since the inception of Pistol Annies, working with many of Nashville’s esteemed writers including Matraca Berg, Luke Laird, Hillary Lindsey, Erin Enderlin and Lori McKenna. “Writing is my first love," she says. "It’s what I came to this town to do.”

Angaleena Presley’s New Album to Feature Miranda Lambert Song

With her upcoming sophomore album, Wrangled , singer-songwriter Angaleena Presley takes direct aim at topics such as discrimination against women in country music and what she terms the “high-school mentality of Music Row and the pain that’s just beneath the surface of the road to stardom.” Out April 21st on Mining Light/Thirty Tigers, Wrangled was co-produced by Presley with Oran Thornton (Eric Church, David Nail) and is the follow-up to her 2015 debut, American Middle Class . Also among the standout cuts is “Dreams Don’t Come True,” reuniting Presley with her Pistol Annies band mates, Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe. “Only Blood” was written with fellow East Kentuckian Chris Stapleton and features guest vocals from his wife, Morgane Stapleton.

“Covered in elbow grease and sacrifice, I set out to shed the skin of my ‘dream’ Nashville by painting a musical picture of loss, surrender, resurrection, redemption and connection with real people who make and support honest music,” Presley says in a statement. The Wrangled cover features the outspoken artist bound in rope and gagged by a red bandana on the cover, itself an homage to the provocative artwork featured on classic country albums of the Sixties and early Seventies.

Presley is among the artists participating in the upcoming Cayamo Cruise, which sets sail February 19th through the 26th. Her spring and summer tour dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Putting together the tracks of Wrangled , the new disc from acclaimed singer-songwriter Angaleena Presley was very similar to the process of putting together a puzzle, the Kentucky-born songstress says.

“There’s a lot of people that I’ve collaborated with. It’s been over two years since I put out my last record,” she admitted to Billboard . “The songs came along one-by-one, and as my list of songs piled up, I started to see a theme developing. I started writing with Oran Thornton, who produced the record with me. He and I wrote ‘Mama I Tried’ and ‘Motel Bible.’ I had already written ‘Cheer Up, Little Darling’ and ‘Bless My Heart.’ After Warren and I wrote those songs, he built a track for me. I am a producer — studio nerd, and had all these studio work tapes that I had done. When you put them together, it just fit — and became this recipe for this new record. I got Chris Stapleton ’s wife, Morgane , to sing on the track that I wrote with Chris — ‘It’s Only Blood,’ which is the Gospel-kind of murder ballad. I think you could call it Southern Gothic. Somebody called it that,” she says, humbly.

Angaleena Presley Announces Debut Solo Album 'American Middle Class'

Presley lays her emotions on the line many times on the album, with the title track having a significant double meaning for the Pistol Annies member.

“As a female in the music business, especially in Country, it’s hard to get your voice out there. There’s a lot of dudes. They’re great. I know a lot of them, and they are great people. But, the girls are great too. I just felt like it was time to start the conversation about more women being on Country Radio. Wrangled  is sort of my love song about that. On one hand, it’s about a woman who is overwhelmed with her domestic responsibilities, but it’s also a metaphor in my experience for navigating this industry, and trying to find my space as a female vocalist.”

Wrangled also has a great historical significance with the appearance of “Cheer Up Little Darling.” It’s the last song that Guy Clark had a role in writing before his passing last May. The two were particularly close.

“Guy and I had become really great friends. We had a standing writing appointment every Wednesday for about five years. Sometimes I would go over, and he wouldn’t be feeling good, but that day, he was on fire. He was hopping around, and it was like hanging out with the Heartworn Highways guy. I had never gotten to see that side of his personality before because his health wasn’t that great. But, on this day, he had the idea already. It was kind of a take-away from the Gospel song ‘Farther Along.’ We wrote that song so quick. I know that the universe and the stars aligned for me to be there that day. I lean on that song so much, and it’s such a gift that he gave to me — and to anyone else who is struggling with just how overwhelming it is to just be and to survive, to navigate your career and your home life. Sometimes you just have to take a breath, and tell yourself that you can’t fix the world. Just sit down, make a list of what you need to do. It’s such great advice. I can’t tell you how many times I look at my calendar and think ‘There’s no way. It’s too much for one human to do.’ Then, I think about that song, and sometimes, I even have to play that song. I am just so thankful that he shared that insight with me, which I know came from a way bigger place.” Clark’s guitar and mandola both appear on the track, thanks to Shawn Camp .

Another instance of Presley becoming emotionally stark is on “Groundswell,” which she says is one of her favorites. “I get emotional when I hear it, and when I sing it sometimes. Doing this job, there are so many blessings. I do get to wake up and be a songwriter every day. I do get to play these songs all over the world, and I get to meet so many people,” she says. “But the flip side to it is getting dressed in broom closets and not eat because there’s not anything open at whatever time you’re traveling. I play shows where sometimes nobody shows up, and you don’t break even. There is that kind of elbow grease side of it that is not glamorous at all.”

It might sound like the female equivalent to Merle Haggard ’s “Footlights,” but she promises she’s very grateful to be where she’s at. “But, it’s worth it. Once I get there and I plug in my guitar, and I see people singing along, shouting out requests, and afterwards, I get to meet them and they tell me stories about going through divorces and one of my songs making them feel like they weren’t the only one that it was happening to. It’s worth it. But, there is some crap you have to go through to get to that stage,” she laments.

Presley did collaborate with fellow Pistol Annies Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe on the set’s lead-off track, “Dreams Don’t Come True,” but she also got to work with another female powerhouse that she has long admired during the creative process of Wrangled —  Wanda Jackson , whose name appears as a co-author on “Good Girl Down.” To say she was in awe of the rockabilly queen is putting it mildly.

“She is just a vision of strength,” she says, beaming. “She came in apologizing that she was a little bit late. She said she took a tumble off of the jet bridge. Upon further inspection, she had a black eye, and she had bruises on her arm. I said ‘Miss Wanda, we could have done this a different day. Why did you come here?’ She looks at me with this little grin, and said ‘You can’t get a good girl down.’ I thought ‘Well, that’s the song we’ll be writing today.’ Hearing her talk about her experience in the music business, which was long ago, and the alarming thing was that it really hasn’t changed that much for girls. I don’t think the scales have balanced,” she notes.

Still, Jackson still carries the same swagger she always has. “It was very enlightening to meet her and get to know her and the stories that she tells. She dated Elvis , for goodness sake. Of course, she will preface that by saying that her husband is the one for her, and the man of her dreams. But, she did date Elvis. She’s an awesome woman, and the Queen of Rock and Roll, or Rockabilly, and of not fitting in, but somehow just forcing your way in and doing your own thing. I have so much respect for her. She really paved the way for people like me, and I owe her so much.”

A look at the lyric sheet for Wrangled might raise some eyebrows when one notes the words for “Country.” If there sounds like there was frustration going on that day, that’s not a coincidence.

“If you look at the dates of creation of the songs, that was the first one. That was probably written three or four years ago. It was at the very height of the bro-country movement. I had done a demo session, and it was four or five songs. One song was called “Business End,” which was about a guy who was protecting his land from this corporate entity that was trying to come in, and he was telling them ‘You’ll wind up on the business end of my granddaddy’s shotgun.’ It was very male. I had a meeting with my publisher, and asked if he was pitching the songs. He looked at me and said ‘We love what you do. It’s so great. You’re your own person, and we wouldn’t want you to change anything…..but……the timing right now is just so wrong. There’s a lot of guy songs.’ Basically, he told me that not only did he not know anybody’s reaction because he hadn’t pitched them to anyone. It was so bad that you couldn’t take a song that by a female into a room and pitch it. People were only wanting to hear those songs about trucks, girls in Daisy Dukes songs. It really broke my heart. And, I’m friends with Luke [Bryan]  and Blake [Shelton] . They are great human beings, but I love Miranda [Lambert] too. I love Sunny Sweeney , and Kacey Musgraves . So, I went home….and I wrote that song that very day. I’m not against anything. I think that everyone deserves a shot. But, people have different tastes. I think there are people out there who love Classic Country. I think there are people who love pop country. But, it just seemed that pop country was the only thing for a long time. I thought with that one, I would cleverly write this list song, but my list would be a little different from the other ones,” she says, adding there was somewhat of an urban flavor on the track — although from a southern point of view.

Part of the urban flavor came from Alabama native rapper  Yelawolf , who Presley says has run into the same kind of problems within the genre. “He’s never had a deal on a Nashville label, even though he pretty much invented country rap. He was on Eminem ’s label, which was a perfect fit for him. We left a space on the track, and I asked him to come in with the hopes that he would want to do it. He came in, listened, and said ‘Ok, I’ll write you a rhyme.’ As it turned out, I didn’t have to speak out. He did it for me.”

Pistol Annies' New Little Lady! Angaleena Presley Welcomes Daughter Phoenix Joeleena Jean

Angaleena Presley is a mom again!

The Pistol Annies singer gave birth to her second child and first with husband Jordan Powell — a daughter named Phoenix Joeleena Jean Powell — at 7:49 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, Presley confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Sharing her newborn’s first photo with PEOPLE, the new mom reveals that her baby girl weighed in at 7 lbs., 13 oz., and measured 17½ inches in length upon her arrival in Nashville, Tennessee.

And her arrival wasn’t without a few hurdles. As Presley explains to PEOPLE, “Last night, when we were admitted to the hospital before delivery, Phoenix’s heart rate got up really high and she was kicking the crap out of me.”

It was nothing a little music couldn’t fix, though. “To try and calm her down, Jordan played the Kentucky/Texas combo of a Loretta [Lynn] and Willie [Nelson] duet up against my belly,” the singer says. “Within 15 seconds, her heart rate dropped to normal and she relaxed. I guess she knew already where her roots were … nothing like a piece of home to heal a heart.”

Powell and Presley, 42, tied the knot in 2012. She also has a 12-year-old son named Jed from a previous relationship.

“I’m so glad to add this strong female to our family,” Presley adds of her newborn . “She is tiny but she is fierce. Jordan and Jed are both by her side and head over heels.”

The new dad tells PEOPLE their daughter’s first name was one the family chose “all together,” while her middle monikers were inspired by friends and family.

“Joeleena is a combination of my friend Tony Joe White, who passed away a few months ago, and ‘Leena,’ which is a family name from Angaleena’s side,” he explains. “Jean is my grandmother’s name. She’s 92 and helped raise me.”

Baby Phoenix took to one of her namesakes immediately — before she was even born! “After Tony Joe passed away in October and we decided to name her Joeleena, three different times during the last couple months, we would try and get Phoenix to move or kick if she hadn’t done it in a day or so,” Powell recalls.

“All three times, nothing we tried seemed to work until I came up and played Tony Joe’s ‘Polk Salad Annie’ and she would start kicking and dancing and rocking out. Every time,” he says. “He was either looking down on us or his groove was that infectious. Maybe both.”

Presley announced her baby news alongside bandmates Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe on stage at a concert in August.

In the exciting reveal, Lambert, 35, brought Presley and Monroe on stage during her Bandwagon Tour show in Dallas, telling the crowd before motioning to Presley’s baby belly, “One of us is drinking, one of us is smoking and one of us is not taking our pill! Holler Annie’s having a baby, everybody!”

But another child was something the country artist wasn’t sure about due to her age. “When I turned 40, my husband and I decided to put the decision to have a baby in the hands of fate,” she told PEOPLE following her announcement . “A year and a half after we ‘stopped being careful’ we were blessed with two pink lines. To say the least, we were both shocked and overjoyed.”

“As an outspoken, female artist, I feel like this is just one more thing that I’m meant to take on in this life. I’m ready to rock being an older mom ,” Presley added at the time.

Presley revealed she was expecting a daughter in September, at a gender reveal party attended by close friends and family including bandmate Monroe, 32. Presley and Jed cut into a cake to reveal a pink center , which received cheers from the surrounding audience.

“We both guessed boy. I had a gut feeling that it was a girl but remained in denial until the moment it was confirmed,” she told PEOPLE exclusively. “We had a whole list of boy names but hadn’t really even scratched the surface on girl names.”

“The moment we found out was glorious,” she recalled. “We were surrounded by close friends and family and there was a literal gasp when big brother cut the cake and revealed that we were having a girl. The whole rest of the day was filled with talk of tea parties and frilly hand-me-downs.”

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style.
