Quaint adults-only lodges like Sundara Inn & Spa are among the options for a romantic getaway in Wisconsin.

Though the Badger State tends to be overshadowed by better-known Midwestern destinations like Chicago and Mackinac Island in Michigan, Wisconsin offers a diverse array of romantic getaways that are ideal for couples in the region.

Thanks to its perch on the coastlines of two Great Lakes – Michigan and Superior – Wisconsin boasts a variety of scenic, fun-filled hideaways. In fact, the state is home to the "Newport of the West" (Lake Geneva) and the "Cape Cod of the Midwest" (Door County), but without the inflated East Coast prices. Retreat farther inland and you and your beau will find remote chalets, energetic college towns, and romantic bed-and-breakfast accommodations perfect for two.

This peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan is a top vacation spot for Midwesterners . In fact, every summer the population balloons to nearly 10 times the number of year-round residents, and it's easy to see why: With its collection of 19 towns, 11 historical lighthouses, 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and five state parks, including an International Dark Sky Park , Door County offers plenty of variety. Since the region spans more than 2,000 square miles, you and your partner will want to select a home base that's close to all of the attractions you're interested in exploring.

Where to stay: If you're looking for a classic bed-and-breakfast, consider the Thorp House Inn & Cottages in Fish Creek. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the inn offers six rooms and six cottages, and its "Romance Package" comes with extras like a bouquet of flowers, chocolates and a bottle of wine. From this inn, it's easy to explore the nearly 3,800-acre Peninsula State Park, then enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner at the White Gull Inn or watch the sun dip below the horizon at the aptly named Sunset Beach Park.

For a traditional hotel that's both adults-only and chock-full of amenities, consider the Ashbrooke Hotel in Egg Harbor. Along with an indoor pool and outdoor fire pit at the hotel, some of the spacious rooms and suites feature gas-burning fireplaces and two-person spa tubs. From the Ashbrooke, you and your better half can embark on the Door County Wine Trail – a collection of nine wineries that specialize in fruit wines like cherry and apple. Traveler-approved eateries in Egg Harbor include Village Cafe and The Fireside Restaurant.

Meanwhile, adventure-loving duos will want to head north to Washington Island, the largest of Door County's 30 islands, which is home to just 600 residents. The main attraction here is Schoolhouse Beach. This unique shore is composed of limestone pebbles and is one of only five sandless beaches of its kind in the world. Bed down in rustic cottages or rough it at a campsite when it's time to turn in. Consult the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce website for a full list of accommodation options.

Downtown Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Courtesy of Travel Wisconsin

It's no secret that Wisconsin is the country's top cheese producer (Wisconsinites aren't called cheeseheads for nothing), but the state's wine production is less well known. For a delicious getaway that promises wine, cheese and a cozy B&B for you and your better half, consider Cedarburg. Located a little more than 20 miles north of Milwaukee, Cedarburg offers a romantic retreat for couples in search of a charming small town. Start your visit with a tasting at Cedar Creek Winery, which occupies a former 19th-century woolen mill. Sample a variety of the winery's offerings with a flight, or indulge in a seasonal wine and cheese tasting. Along with traditional varietals like pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon, Cedar Creek offers more unique options like its Cedarburg Spice, a sweet mulled red wine enhanced with clove and allspice.

If you haven't enjoyed your fill of cheese at the winery, head to the Cedar Valley Cheese Store, where you'll find more than 300 different cheeses. You can purchase some cheese curds (a Wisconsin staple) to enjoy back at your bed-and-breakfast.

Where to stay: Among Cedarburg's top accommodations is the Washington House Inn, a popular refuge for twosomes and parents in need of a kid-free getaway. Founded in 1846, the inn today offers 34 guest rooms spread across two buildings. No matter which accommodation you select – certain rooms offer whirlpool tubs and fireplaces – you'll be treated to a complimentary continental breakfast (made from scratch) each morning, as well as a free afternoon wine and cheese hour. Dial up the romance by adding on chocolate truffles or a bottle of wine to your stay – or book the inn's "Celebrate in Style" package, which includes two tour tickets to Cedar Creek Winery, a bottle of Cedar Creek wine, some sparkling wine, two souvenir wine glasses and chocolate truffles.

Big Bear Hideaway: Boulder Junction

If you and your significant other are dreaming of a secluded romantic cabin in the woods and nights spent cozying up by the fireplace, plan a getaway to Big Bear Hideaway. Nestled in northern Wisconsin amid the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, Big Bear Hideaway offers six year-round cabins. These log and stone cabins are outfitted with kitchens and traditional rustic decor (think: wood-paneled walls and ceilings, quilted bedspreads, and plenty of bear and fish motifs). Certain accommodations also have gas fireplaces, among other amenities. Options range from the Honey Bear cabin – a studio made just for two – to the Polar Bear Palace, which has the capacity to welcome up to 13 lodgers if you're vacationing with several other couples.

Outside your digs, you and your beau will find a variety of amenities on the grounds to enhance your stay, including a sauna, a pavilion with a fire pit and grills, a fish-cleaning station, and pontoon boat rentals. What's more, the nearby communities of Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters and Minocqua provide ample opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, snowmobiling and fishing. Keep in mind, though, that there are no dining facilities on-site at Big Bear Hideaway, so you'll either have to cook your own meals or venture into town. Consider dining at a traditional supper club like Smokey's in Minocqua for favorites like steak and walleye.

Canoe Bay: Chetek

Self-described as a "refuge for the most romantic souls," Canoe Bay is an adults-only retreat set on 300 forested acres in Chetek, a town located about 40 miles north of Eau Claire. For many past visitors, Canoe Bay's quiet atmosphere and attentive staff were reasons enough to book a stay, but the secluded accommodations were what really sealed the deal.

While you can opt for a suite in the inn, there's also a variety of stand-alone lake cottages or villas to choose from. Along with gorgeous views of the lake, these accommodations – which range in size from about 500 to 2,000 square feet – are equipped with stone fireplaces, private decks and two-person whirlpool tubs. Select accommodations also feature their own private Finnish sauna. For even more seclusion, book one of the tiny houses, which are perched on a hill just west of the inn. Though they only measure 400 square feet, the tiny houses manage to create quite the romantic ambiance thanks to window walls, screened-in porches and fireplaces.

When you and your partner are ready to venture out, you'll find a variety of ways to engage with the property's stunning surroundings. In the warmer months, couples can access the hotel's fleet of canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. Those who prefer to stay on land can make use of the miles of hiking and snowshoeing trails that surround the resort. After a day exploring the grounds or admiring the lake, surprise your sweetie with an in-room massage. You can cap off the day with dinner from your private deck via the hotel's mealtime delivery service, which is offered almost every day.

Sitting pretty next to Pike's Creek on nearly 4 acres of white pine-covered land, Pinehurst Inn Bed & Breakfast offers an ideal retreat for twosomes. Situated in Bayfield, a tiny destination in northern Wisconsin, this eco-friendly inn houses just eight rooms across two buildings. Lodgers can take their pick between accommodations in the 1800s-era Main House or the more modern Garden House, which was built in 2003. Amenities vary by room but may include claw-foot tubs, fireplaces and private decks. For many past guests, the friendly innkeepers combined with the full breakfasts and afternoon snacks (which are all included with your stay and prepared on-site) were highlights at Pinehurst Inn.

You'll have to venture off-site for other meals, but the innkeepers and past travelers can help steer you and your significant other in the right direction. Well-reviewed spots that make for a memorable date night include the Landmark Restaurant at Old Rittenhouse Inn and the Pier Plaza Restaurant, which offers stunning views of Lake Superior. When you're ready to get out on the water, sign up for a cruise of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore – home to historic lighthouses, unique sea caves, beaches and more.

Address: 83645 state Highway 13, Bayfield, WI 54814

The Osthoff Resort: Elkhart Lake

The Osthoff Resort offers an ideal retreat for twosomes looking for a fully equipped property with a variety of amenities. Overlooking Elkhart Lake in eastern Wisconsin – about 60 miles north of Milwaukee – the resort boasts multiple indoor and outdoor pools, a tennis court, and seasonal bike rentals for exploring the village of Elkhart Lake. Along with its own beach, The Osthoff Resort offers water sports equipment rentals like kayaks and canoes, as well as seasonal lake cruises during the day and at night. If you and your partner are looking for a more low-key afternoon, indulge in a custom couples massage at Aspira Spa.

When it's time to dine, you may want to make the most of the resort's waterfront location by enjoying drinks on the Lake Deck, which is open from Memorial Day through the first week of October and hosts live music on select days. Lovebirds can also admire the views from any of the property's three main dining venues. Along with the beautiful grounds, past lodgers were impressed with the accommodations. If you and your better half are celebrating something special, consider springing for one of the suites to enjoy a private balcony, a kitchenette and a two-person whirlpool tub.

A couple walks through the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin.

Courtesy of Credit Visit Milwaukee

If you and your honey are looking for a cheap weekend getaway , head to Milwaukee – the most populous city in Wisconsin and a great affordable alternative to cosmopolitan Chicago . Sitting on Lake Michigan's western shore, Milwaukee offers the ideal escape for culture-loving duos. Admire the natural beauty of the lake from the Milwaukee Art Museum, which boasts 30,000 works of art, including one of the largest collections of works by Wisconsin native Georgia O'Keeffe. Even if you don't go inside, you'll still want to stop by the museum to check out the Burke Brise Soleil, a movable wing-like sun-screen that sits atop the museum's Windhover Hall. If the weather allows, you can watch the wings open in the morning, "flap" at noon and close in the evening – one of the top things to do in Milwaukee .

If you're looking for a more adventurous outing, consider driving about 50 miles north to Kohler-Andrae State Park. Sitting pretty along the shores of Lake Michigan, the state park offers a bevy of recreational activities, including biking, boating, canoeing and hiking. There's also more than 2 miles of beachfront and, for winter visitors, cross-country ski trails.

Amateur foodies will also find plenty of delicious options in Milwaukee. Stop by the Milwaukee Public Market to pick up provisions for a picnic at nearby Veterans Park, which offers cinematic lake and skyline views. Or, for a little more guidance on the city's best eats, sign up for a food tour . If you and your significant other are beer drinkers, you'll want to explore Milwaukee's brewery scene. (It is nicknamed Brew City, after all.) Traveler favorites include Lakefront Brewery, Milwaukee Brewing Co. and Eagle Park Brewing Co. For a romantic dinner, visit Balzac, Zarletti or Sanford Restaurant.

Where to stay: When it's time to retire, Hotel Metro wows with its art deco-inspired decor and cozy rooms, some of which are equipped with soaking tubs and fireplaces. The Pfister Hotel is equally grand, with its spa, rooftop cocktail lounge, and rooms that boast views of the lake and the city.

Lady of the Lake Tour Boat on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.

Called the "Newport of the West," southeastern Wisconsin's Lake Geneva is filled with stately mansions, cozy B&B accommodations and plenty of waterfront activities. Plus, Lake Geneva is an easy drive for Milwaukee couples since it's located about 50 miles southwest of the big city. Get a feel for the area's beautiful homes and scenic setting by strolling hand in hand along the Geneva Lake Shore Path. The undulating, 25-mile-long walkway offers views of the many boats cruising across the lake, as well as of the historical estates and landscaped gardens lining the trail. It's recommended that you start your stroll from the Lake Geneva Public Library, located downtown. To learn more about the history of Lake Geneva, sign up for a guided ghost tour .

When you and your beau are ready for a different perspective, get out on the water with Lake Geneva Cruise Line. If the two of you are history buffs, you may want to opt for a narrated tour to learn more about the history of the lake's grand estates. Twosomes who love the challenge of a competitive day on the green, meanwhile, will find more than 240 holes at 19 courses along the Lake Geneva Area Golf Trail. Lovebirds who prefer relaxing at the spa can head to one of several area resorts, such as Grand Geneva Resort & Spa or The Abbey Resort, to indulge in a treatment or two.

Where to stay: When it's time to tuck in for the night, bed down at one of Lake Geneva's charming B&Bs. If you and your partner enjoy lavish decor like antique furnishings and ornate chandeliers, consider one of the city's historic properties like the Maxwell Mansion or The Baker House, both of which date back to the 1800s. For a more modern setting, hang your hat at the adults-only SevenOaks, whose private cottages are outfitted with kitchenettes, spa tubs for two, fireplaces and more.

Justin Trails Resort: Sparta

If you and your partner are on the hunt for a romantic getaway but can't bear to leave your furry friend at home, plan a trip to Justin Trails Resort, a pet-friendly retreat in the Driftless Area region of southern Wisconsin. Across the property's 200 acres, you'll find a variety of dog-friendly trails where pets can roam off their leashes. For many past guests, the pet-friendly policy and bountiful amenities were a major draw. There are two disc golf courses on-site if you want to challenge your sweetie to a friendly game, as well as plenty of bird-watching and stargazing opportunities thanks to the resort's remote location in Sparta. Justin Trails is also a great jumping-off point for exploring the Driftless Area's attractions. Nature-loving duos may want to venture to Wildcat Mountain State Park and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve while foodies taste their way through the Driftless Wisconsin Wine & Cheese Trail.

As for the resort's accommodations, you'll have your pick from a selection of suites, cabins and campsites. Amenities in the suites range from a fireplace and two-person whirlpool tub to a private porch. For a bit more seclusion, reserve the Little House on the Prairie log cabin. When you're not cozying up in front of the gas fireplace or relaxing in your private porch's rocking chairs, climb the ladder to the cabin's loft to relax in the whirlpool tub. All stays include daily homemade breakfast (a particular highlight for reviewers), but to make your romantic escape even more memorable, book one of the resort's packages for extras like Amish chocolates and local wine.

Address: 7452 Kathryn Ave., Sparta, WI 54656

Sundara Inn & Spa: Wisconsin Dells

Romantic getaways Wisconsin

Twosomes in need of some pampering can book a stay at Sundara Inn & Spa. Situated in Wisconsin Dells amid an 80-acre pine forest on the outskirts of Lake Delton, the adults-only inn fosters a tranquil atmosphere thanks to its electronics-free policy in the property's common spaces – a particular highlight for recent guests who praised the relaxing environment. What's more, since Sundara Inn houses just 36 suites, you and your beau won't be rubbing elbows with hordes of other guests. For an extra dose of seclusion, book one of the property's woodland suites or villas. These accommodations are separated from the main resort and come equipped with extra amenities like fireplaces and outdoor spaces perfect for admiring the towering pines.

When you're not lounging in your suite, you'll likely be at the spa. Boasting 26 treatment rooms, the spa offers a vast menu of massages, facials, body scrubs and wraps, bath treatments, and salon services. After indulging at the spa, kick back in one of the resort's "Tranquil Spaces," where you and your better half can meditate, read or simply drift off for a peaceful snooze in a hammock. Equally relaxing are the property's pools, one of which features a swim-up bar and a gas fire running through the center of the pool.

More active duos may want to take advantage of Sundara Inn's wellness activities, including guided hikes, yoga, meditation, cooking demonstrations and seasonal pontoon cruises on Lake Delton. When it's time to dine, there's no need to change out of your robe – you and your sweetheart can stay in your suite or villa and enjoy dishes like vegetable risotto or parmesan-crusted halibut.

The Charmant Hotel: La Crosse

Romantic getaways Wisconsin

Courtesy of The Charmant Hotel

Housed in a renovated candy factory built in 1898, The Charmant Hotel offers a sweet escape for you and your honey. Situated in downtown La Crosse, the 67-room boutique hotel celebrates its industrial roots with distinct architectural details, such as exposed brick, wood beams and maple wood flooring throughout. What's more, at check-in guests receive a treat from a local chocolate shop, Indulgence Chocolatiers, and the on-site Sweets Bar offers handmade chocolates 24 hours a day.

Past visitors loved the hotel's attention to detail and the careful restoration of the interiors; others were impressed with the rooms, which they described as comfortable and clean. If you and your sweetheart are looking to splurge, consider booking the Grand Salle room. From the room's wraparound balcony, which measures 300 square feet, you'll enjoy views of the Mississippi River and downtown La Crosse. Other amenities include a claw-foot tub, a rainfall shower and a dining table.

If you don't spring for a room with a river view, you can still make the most of the hotel's location by visiting the Rooftop Terrace. Open seasonally, it offers wood-fired pizza, beer, wine and cocktails alongside sweeping city and water panoramas. For a more intimate date night setting, couples can head to the hotel's on-site restaurant or walk down the street to The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern for white tablecloths and a farm-to-table menu.

Address: 101 State St., La Crosse, WI 54601

Hotel Retlaw, Trademark Collection by Wyndham: Fond du Lac

Couples who appreciate stylish digs will enjoy a weekend getaway at Hotel Retlaw. Located in downtown Fond du Lac, the hotel has welcomed guests since 1923. Though the property has undergone several renovations since opening – most recently in 2019 – it stays true to its art deco roots with its ornate black-and-white decor and eye-catching chandeliers. Past guests described the hotel as beautiful, especially the rooms. If you and your beau are celebrating an anniversary or just want to treat yourselves, book one of the suites. The Dillinger Suite in particular features fireplaces, downtown views and separate living areas.

When you're not relaxing in your room, toast to your love over handcrafted cocktails at the elegant Lobby Bar. You can also tuck in for farm-to-table dishes at the on-site Table One restaurant or explore downtown Fond du Lac for more date night options. Lakeside Park is an enchanting spot, ideal for romantic strolls or even proposals. Spread across 400 acres along the southern shore of Lake Winnebago, the park offers plenty of space for twosomes to enjoy a picnic or sunset boat ride.

Anaway Place: Richland Center

For couples in need of seclusion and a digital detox, Anaway Place provides the ideal setting for unplugging. Tucked into the hills of southern Wisconsin's Richland Center, about 65 miles northwest of Madison, Anaway Place offers seven one-of-a-kind accommodation options across 80 acres. Because of its remote location, the property's cell reception is spotty. And though Wi-Fi access and small TVs are available in most of the cabins, there are no TV networks, meaning the TVs can only play DVDs. Several previous guests recommend downloading a few maps for offline viewing since the cell reception is unreliable.

However, without screens to distract you, you and your better half will enjoy plenty of uninterrupted time rekindling your love. Enjoy various walking and biking trails in the area, plus a picnic spot in one of the property's three fields that's perfect for watching the sun set or splitting a bottle of wine. In winter, you can go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing nearby. A handful of state parks and other attractions sit within about an hour's drive of the cabins, including Devil's Lake State Park and the 800-acre former estate of Frank Lloyd Wright.

In addition to traditional accommodation options like the Log Cabin, there are more unique settings, such as the Glass House. From the house's panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, which make up the four walls of the house, you can admire the surrounding woods while cozying up with your sweetheart. A footbridge connects the glass-enclosed portion to a more traditional enclosure housing a kitchenette and a bathroom. Note that select accommodations are only available seasonally and reservations for these in-demand cabins can book up as far out as two years in advance.

Memorial Union Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin.

Sarah Buob | Courtesy of Destination Madison

If you and your partner fear you'd go stir-crazy in a secluded cabin in the woods but don't want to plan a big-city retreat, Madison may be the happy medium you seek. Though it's the state's capital city, Madison embodies a small-town spirit that makes it ideal for a romantic getaway. Nature loving-duos will want to start by exploring the nearly 20 miles of trails that crisscross the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum. The trail system passes through restored prairies, savannas, woodlands and wetlands – perfect for adventurous twosomes. There's also the more manicured Olbrich Botanical Gardens, which sprawl across 16 acres and boast a number of themed gardens ideal for a quiet romantic stroll or even getting down on one knee.

For a casual date night, stake out a spot on the Memorial Union Terrace to watch the sun set below Lake Mendota while sharing a pitcher of beer. Or, get out on the water for a scenic evening boat ride with an outfitter like Betty Lou Cruises. After cruising around the lake, head to the Capitol Square area to enjoy a meal at one of several superb restaurants, including Italian-inspired Naples 15 and the old-school Tornado Club Steak House.

Where to stay: When it's time to bed down, you'll find a number of accommodation options in Madison to suit your style. Bed-and-breakfast lovers may want to book a room at The Livingston Inn, which occupies a more than 150-year-old Gothic Revival-style house that is filled with charming antiques and cozy fireplaces perfect for snuggling up with your sweetie. Duos who prefer a more modern vibe should check in to The Edgewater . Sitting pretty on Lake Mendota, it offers stunning views from select accommodations, as well as an on-site spa perfect for spoiling your partner.

Sculpture tour in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Megan Zabel Holmes | Courtesy of Visit Eau Claire

This university town in western Wisconsin makes for a low-key romantic getaway that also offers plenty of outdoor activities. Get a lay of the land with an enchanting stroll through downtown's Phoenix Park. Spread across about 9 acres at the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers, the park plays host to a free summer concert series and the Eau Claire Downtown Farmers Market. Plus, it's a popular proposal spot. For a break from the downtown area and plenty of bird-watching opportunities, nature-loving couples should head to Putnam Park, a 230-acre natural area that's managed by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Along with its meandering trails and wildlife, the park is home to Putnam Rock, which is affectionately known as the "kissing rock" since it's a favorite spot for couples keen on catching an incredible view of the Chippewa River at sunset.

If you and your beau prefer to observe art rather than wildlife, prioritize the city's sculpture tour. Eau Claire boasts the largest sculpture tour in the nation, with more than 160 sculptures scattered between the downtown area and the Water Street District. After you finish the tour, reward yourselves with a delicious Italian meal at Mona Lisa's – a favorite date night spot for locals. Houligans Steak & Seafood Pub is another go-to thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and classic steakhouse menu.

Where to stay: When it's time to tuck in for the night, check in to the adults-only Otter Creek Inn. This three-story Tudor-style home only offers six suites, all of which feature Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, and a mix of contemporary and antique decor. Plus, every room rate includes a daily made-to-order breakfast.

Tailgate Village in Titletown District, Green Bay.

Green Bay is best known as the home of Lambeau Field, but there's more to this eastern Wisconsin city than football. For a laid-back afternoon, venture to one of the seven wineries found within the greater Green Bay area. LedgeStone Vineyards & Winery offers an especially picturesque setting as it's located at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment. If you and your partner prefer a more active date, consider exploring the many recreational trails that wind through Green Bay and surrounding counties. Paths like the East River Trail and the Devil's River State Trail are particularly enchanting in fall when the leaves are changing color . After a day of activities, enjoy a memorable meal at one of Green Bay's top restaurants. Traveler-approved date-night spots include Angelina, a cozy Italian eatery, and the classic Republic Chophouse.

Where to stay: Green Bay is home to a collection of boutique accommodations ideal for a romantic weekend getaway. For a cozy bed-and-breakfast, make reservations at the Astor House. Built in 1888, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the inn's five rooms are equipped with gas fireplaces and two-person whirlpool tubs. Breakfast – which past travelers described as outstanding – is included in the rate.

For a more modern retreat, consider Lodge Kohler , a four-star hotel located just 100 yards from Lambeau Field. The main draw here is the spa, which features a hot tub, a steam room, a sauna and a cool plunge pool, not to mention a suite of services like facials, massages, body treatments and more. Even if you're not able to make an appointment at the spa, you can still enjoy a spa-like experience in your guest room. Bathrooms are equipped with Kohler products, including an in-shower digital remote that allows guests to control the temperature and water pressure of the shower heads.

A Weekend in Door County: Tips for First-timers

clouds over boats in a marina

As you research your Door County itinerary, a few questions will probably pop up:

When is the best time to visit Door County?

  • Which Door County town is the best to stay in?
  • With only a weekend in Door County, what are the can’t-miss sights and activities?

This article aims to answer some of your most common questions and gives an overview for Door County first-timers.

Door County Basics

Door County is the easternmost county in Wisconsin located on the Door Peninsula. If you picture the shape of Wisconsin as your left hand – the peninsula is the thumb that sticks out.

Door County is 70 miles long and 18 miles wide at its base, narrowing as you head north. The water of Green Bay borders the western side of the peninsula. The north and eastern sides look out into Lake Michigan.

With 300 miles of shoreline, Door County is a naturally scenic weekend escape attracting 2 million visitors a year. Many make their way from the Midwest as Door County is an easy 2.5-hour drive from Milwaukee, less than 4 hours from Chicago, and less than 5 hours from Minneapolis.

(Another scenic Midwest destination to check out is Galena, Illinois. Mississippi views, restaurants, shops and wineries make it a great weekend getaway, too!)

Common Questions

You may already have your specific weekend locked in for a Door County visit or maybe you are flexible with your dates – either way, there are some things to keep in mind.

The most popular time for a Door County visit is May through October when three-quarters of the tourists make their way to the area.

Spring offers the beauty of apple and cherry blossoms and wildflowers with fewer crowds, although the weather can still be cool and wet.

Summer brings hotter temperatures – ideal for water sports and swimming, but you’ll also encounter more bugs, bigger crowds and higher prices during this peak time.

windy road in fall

Winter sees the season’s die-hards who come for ice fishing, snow shoeing and exploring the frozen shoreline.

Weekends are more packed than weekdays as you may guess. But even weekdays can be busy during peak periods. Visiting during peak tourist times of late spring, summer or during fall events, plan for the place to be crowded and keep these things in mind:

  • Make lodging reservations in advance. Places can book up fast.
  • Be careful when driving through the small towns of Door County. Crowds of people will be walking up and down the sidewalks, some venturing into the streets and trying to cross in front of you. Be patient, drive with caution, and give yourself extra time.
  • With so many cars and people lining the streets, you may think parking would be a nightmare. But between street parking and lots scattered throughout, the towns provide a good deal of parking for the amount of visitors. You shouldn’t have to drive around too long before a spot opens up.
  • Door County has plenty of delicious dining options, but during peak tourist season restaurants will be crowded. You’ll likely have a wait to get seated at a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations. In my experience the time goes fairly quickly, though, especially since you have a scenic outdoor setting to enjoy as you wait.

Which town is the best to stay in?

Where to stay in Door County is usually a big question for first-timers to the area. The best advice I received during my first trip to Door County was to look at a map of the Door Peninsula and envision a triangle from Baileys Harbor north to Sister Bay , south through Fish Creek to Egg Harbor and back to Bailey’s Harbor.

map of door county wisconsin

The city of Sturgeon Bay , south of the triangle, is the entrance to Door County. While it’s a nice city, it’s much bigger than the quaint towns farther north and not the most convenient to explore the peninsula.

North of the triangle are more remote towns and Northport Pier, which provides access to the Washington Island ferry . While you may decide to include a trip to Washington Island in your weekend itinerary, I don’t recommend it. It will take a big chunk of time out of your weekend in Door County. Your time is better spent exploring more accessible parts of the region.

In the end it doesn’t matter too much which town you stay in because you’ll likely be exploring all of them. The towns are within an easy drive of each other and all deliver a variety of unique experiences.

With only a weekend in Door County, what are the can’t miss sights and activities?

People venture to Door County for different reasons and with different interests. You may want to spend as much time as possible on a golf course, touring lighthouses, or hiking bluffs along the scenic shoreline. Maybe unique boutiques are your thing, sprinkled in with some wine tastings. Either way, your best bet is to prioritize the activities that mean the most to you.

Limited to just a weekend visit, you won’t get to see and do all that Door County has to offer, but to help with your itinerary, here are some popular experiences in Door County.

Explore Peninsula State Park.

Choosing an active adventure is a great way to see the stunning Door County scenery. You can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes to head out on your own, or choose to take a guided tour. Even with just a weekend in Door County you have time to fit an adventure into your schedule. Tour companies, such as Door County Kayak Tours , provide kayak and E-bike excursions from 1.5-4 hours.

Savor a sunrise or sunset over the water.

We are staying at Motel 57. Is that far from everything?

April 1, 2022 at 9:18 pm

Hi Sharon, It looks like Motel 57 is on the south side of Sturgeon Bay, which is the first town you come to in Door County. Sturgeon Bay is a nice city – larger than the other towns. It’s about a half hour from Egg Harbor and Bailey’s Harbor, and about 35 minutes from Peninsula State Park – just to give you an idea of the distance. The whole area is beautiful, but I do prefer the smaller towns further north which have a bit more charm.

Hi Deanne, Wondering if you could suggest any air b&b’s in one of those small towns with character that you are referring to? Or rental cabins on the water?? Thank you in advance!

May 15, 2022 at 6:30 pm

That really depends on the dates you are going, how many people you have, your budget, and your particular style. There are many places to choose from, but it really comes down to a personal preference. I would suggest checking on airbnb.com and filtering with your specific requirements! Good luck and have fun!

We are staying at Mae Reilly’s Air BnB in Bailey’s Harbor. Highly reccomend! Nice quiet stay and a beautiful property. It is centrally located to most Door County attractions! Easy drive to nearby towns and about 40 minutes to the ferry.

Hi. This was such a great article and primer for the area! I was wondering how you find the water temperature for swimming at the end of July. We are from NJ, so we are not used to exactly warm water. 😉

May 15, 2022 at 6:20 am

Here is a link to the current water temperature in Door County: https://seatemperature.info/sturgeon-bay-water-temperature.html And this link is the historical data for Door County water temperature in July the past two years. You can compare and see what the temperature was on specific July dates in the past and approximately what it might be this year: https://seatemperature.info/july/door-county-water-temperature.html

Hope that helps!

I really enjoy Door County Brewing located in Bailey’s Harbor. Good beer and fun atmosphere! As far as a scenic drive, the whole coastal byway is pretty ( https://doorcountycoastalbyway.org/ ) but the most iconic segment is Hwy 42 as you near the Washington Island ferry dock- between Timberline Road and Ports des Morts Drive. Hope that helps! Have a fun trip!

Where is the best place to stay for a 3 day visit

August 23, 2022 at 9:23 pm

Hi Amy, There are a variety of lodging options (hotels, airbnb’s, cabins, B&Bs, etc.) in the towns of Sister Bay, Bailey’s Harbor, Fish Creek, and Egg Harbor. These towns are the most convenient places to stay in my opinion. They are only a short drive from each other, too, so you’ll be able to experience all of the small town charm in each of them.

Are things still open the last weekend in October?

September 10, 2022 at 11:55 am

Hi Jason, Some places close mid-October, some after the end of October, and others stay open through the winter. For instance, Wilson’s Ice Cream in Ephraim closes for the season on Oct. 16, 2022. The last day for Cana Island Lighthouse is October 31, while some restaurants and bars stay open all year. It’s best to check the websites of each place you’re interested in. The good thing is that there is so much natural beauty and outdoor scenery to take in, which you can view any time! If you go, have a great time!

October 12, 2022 at 12:39 am

Just got back from spending a week in Sister Bay. Without doing a bunch of research ahead of time we hit all the places that you talked about with the exception of whitefish Dunes.

We had a fabulous time. You are so right about charming and quaint towns.

Seems like a field of dreams moment-no construction vehicles, no trash, no graffiti, with the exception of that one building that we all can paint on…, Minimal aggressive driving, minimal road closures, etc., hardly any stoplights & pleasant Wisconsinites everywhere. Really an absolutely awesome time.

Every town was charming, we hit four, five wineries a couple of breweries including the peach barn winery next in sister bay. We stayed a quarter mile from there.

We live south of Denver and while there are plenty of things I love about where we live, Door County will definitely be a vacation destination, especially during October.

October 12, 2022 at 9:17 am

Mark, I’m glad you had a great time experiencing Door County! October is a beautiful time of year to visit. Spread the word back in Colorado about our hidden gem as a great vacation getaway. 🙂

Hi, your site has been very helpful. We’re planning a visit to Door County in July of next year with 3 adults and 2 kids ages 13 and 10. Can you recommend some must-sees with kids? Both kids are outdoorsy. I was hoping to stay at a resort that included water activities but they are all booked.

July 6, 2023 at 4:40 pm

Hi Jenny, I highly recommend visiting The Farm in Sturgeon Bay. Kids (and adults) have fun bottle feeding baby goats and petting other barnyard animals – pigs, cows, chickens, etc. You can watch chicks hatch, too! It’s run by a lovely family and is a well-known attraction in the area. Since you’ll be in Door County in July, your family can go cherry picking if they’re ripe. That’s always fun. Hike in Cave Point and Peninsula State Park where there is a tall observation lookout. Even if you’re not able to stay at a resort with water activities, there are numerous beaches around and tons of water activities to do like kayaking, boating, paddle boarding, fishing, etc. Stop in to Wilson’s for some ice cream and see a movie at Skyway Drive-in Theatre near Ephraim. Hope you and your family enjoy your time in Door County!

February 24, 2024 at 1:15 pm

Hi Deanne! Thank you for all the information/ tips. I plan to look into all of them. We were able to rent a home in Fish Creek. Any thoughts/ recommendations in that area to do/ places to eat? All of these sweet towns seem fairly close to each other. I hope we have time to visit them all.

Thank you, Jenny

February 25, 2024 at 1:30 pm

Hi Jenny, Fish Creek is so cute. You’ll love it! There are a lot of boutiques and stores, so plan to do some shopping. For outdoor adventure, Peninsula State Park is right there and is so beautiful whether you drive through, hike, or camp. Wild Tomato is one of the best restaurants in the area. Their pizza is famous! (If someone in your group doesn’t like pizza, their chicken tenders are amazing, too.) Pelletier’s is another good restaurant known for their fish boils. And, yes, the towns are all close to each other so try to hit all of them. Hope you have a great time!

Your First-Class "Smaller Group" option for touring More of Door County

Door County Day Trips Logo

PENINSULA DAY TRIPS

Our day trips are different because we simply spend more time enjoying more of everything this amazing area has to offer.  It is our mission for you to experience Door County in comfort while enjoying smaller group sizes and personal attention.

We also pick you up at your place and drop you back off.  This way you won't have to worry about getting around, parking, or even planning.  Just tell us where to pick you up and we'll do the rest.  We're your easy way to see Door County rain or shine.

No two day trips will ever be the same since we do not use a cookie cutter approach to touring.  If a particular group wants to do one more wine stop, shop a little more, or go on a hike, we will modify the tour at that time to incorporate alternatives and options that meet the entire groups wants/needs as we are able.

In other words, you have a voice in deciding exactly what you do or see on our day trips.

The View from Ellison Bay Scenic Overlook

What We Offer...

Local Tour Managers/Drivers with extensive knowledge of the area's history, attractions, and native politics/culture

Black, late model luxury vans for comfort and elegance

Large doors with running boards for easy entry

Padded Leather Seats to rest between stops

A climate controlled cabin, comfortable in the heat or the rain/wind

Large Tinted Windows for privacy and viewing the sights without glaring sunlight

Raised roof for easy entry and exit

A big trunk for all of your Door County Goodies; when you go a little shopping crazy!

Eagle Bluff Lighthouse: Peninsula State Park

Our Day Trip will typically take most of a day to complete with customers being picked up and dropped off at their respective lodging or designated pick-up location.  We truly take you for the day so you can just relax.

We'll pick you up from anywhere in Door County

or at our park and ride locations in

Sturgeon Bay & Egg Harbor.

Exact Park and Ride locations will be shared at confirmation .

Pick-ups will occur between 8 and 9 a.m. with drop-offs between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Of Course There May Be Seasonal ...irregularities!

You may notice that there is no exact itinerary for our day trip.   (only this sample itinerary!)

Of course we will take you to all of the iconic must-see Door County scenic locations like Cave Point and Peninsula Park, but you can't have a flexible tour with a rigid schedule.  DC is a dynamic area that has a variety of elements to experience, and some days are just better than others for some things.  In addition, due to the irregular nature of restaurant and other businesses hours, an exact itinerary is not possible.  Restaurants, shop stops, and activities are determined on a day-by-day, tour-by-tour basis to ensure you get timely service at locations that are open, have adequate staffing, and will give you the best impression of Door County on the DAY you visit.

Let's just say we take you up one side of the peninsula and down the other, with lots of stops in between!   ;-)

There will usually be at least one stop specifically designated as a meal stop.  Meals are on your own but we let them know your coming for the best experience possible.

We will also ask groups if they prefer to grab small meals throughout the day rather than take the time to take in a sit down meal. There are plenty of opportunities to grab small meals all along our journey and  if you can eat as we go, you'll see more.

W e encourage you to bring something to eat, snacks, etc... our tours are fast paced and we are constantly moving so absolutely, bring something to eat or something to drink along.  You'll need the energy. :)

Cave Point County Park

More Details

A Day Trip will have a maximum of 12 travelers made up of couples, friends, and families.  Most trips will consist of 2 or 3 parties.

Although this tour allows children, please understand that most of the sites and attractions will be most appreciated by older children and adults.

Seats are $139 for the Peninsula Day Trip.

We are so sorry but at this time our tours are Not wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are not available on this tour. Check back next season as we are working to add this option.

Wondering if anyone could offer some advice for an anniversary trip to Door County. We're looking for some type of romantic getaway.

' class=

When are you thinking about going?

' class=

We love the Landmark in Egg Harbor. You can rent a condo with the amenitities of home and you're close to just about everything. I would also recommend a carriage ride by Mayberry's. You can call for reservations, or show up right in downtown Ephriam next to the old village hall. They're very nice, and if you time your ride right, the sunsets are breath taking from the carriage.

The Spa at Sacred Ground is also nice place for a couples massage.

And don't forget all of the wineries!!

Chanticleer guest house in sturgeon bay. romantic, quiet, well situated. Also if you are there in warm weather--inground pool. lots of reviews on this web site

We're going the first part of April. Thanks for all the advice!

Most Romantic Getaways in the USA – Southeast

1. helen, georgia (northern georgia mountains).

By: Michele of Endless Family Travels

The charming town if Helen, Georgia, one of the most romantic getaways in the usa

If you’re looking for peace, quiet, incredible wineries, cute towns, and tons of fantastic hiking trails, then north Georgia is one of the most romantic getaways in the USA for you!

Within easy reach of Atlanta, there are many romantic hotels in and around the town of Helen. In particular, the winery and accommodations at Sylvan Valley Lodge are incredibly popular among visitors who love their themed wine and food events in the evening.

But, If you enjoy golf or love an amazing couple’s spa, then visit the Valhalla Resort. This adults-only resort has all the amenities you’ll need for a romantic mountain getaway in Georgia .

And if you can somehow manage to tear yourself away from your hotel, take a tour of some of North Georgia’s most exceptional wineries on the Unicoi Wine Trail.

In fact, the incredibly fertile soil of the Appalachian foothills produces grapes of many varieties, allowing you to sample a wealth of delicious local wines in almost every restaurant you visit.

Most wineries in the area also have comfortable tasting rooms where you can sit, relax, taste, and learn more about all of the delicious products on offer here.

Additionally, the area is also full of hiking trails, waterfalls, and beautiful natural landscapes – like the Chattahoochee River – that are just waiting to be explored.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

By: Hannah of Hannah Henderson Travel

Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans might not strike you as the most romantic getaway in the USA, but there is an old-world charm about this place that will appeal to couples.

Add in lots of fun, romantic things to do in this historic city and you easily have one of the most romantic places in the US. Especially since live music constantly rings through the streets, and bottomless brunches are a true art form that New Orleans has definitely mastered.

Now, for enchanting, historic charm – that is best embodied by a magnificent, 70-year-old carousel bar – book a room at the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter.

Plus, being onsite allows you to nab a seat at their quirky rotating bar. Don’t worry though. It only rotates one full turn about every 15 minutes. So, you won’t need to hold on too tightly.

It’s also just a great spot to start a romantic evening in one of New Orleans’ most historic establishments.

Also, while you’re in the area, don’t miss out on brunch at Curio, on Frenchman Street. Trust me. Their bottomless mimosas and bloody marys are freshly made and a delicious way to start the day.

If you want, you can also enjoy a food/walking tour through the French Quarter or go shopping at one of the many cute galleries and boutiques that are found in the neighborhood.

Afterward, visit Frenchman Street since the quaint little jazz bars and sidewalk buskers here create an electric buzz that is truly infectious.

But, to really partake in all of the amazing attractions that this city has to offer, you’ll need at least 2 days in New Orleans .

3. Miami, Florida

By: Talek of Travels with Talek

Colorful lifeguard station on the beaches of Miami.

What’s more romantic than a sunset cruise? Why, a sunset cruise through the tropical waters of Miami. Because this is just one of the many romantic things to do in Miami as you explore the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula.

Now, as your ship sails through Biscayne Bay, you will enjoy beautiful views of the historic Vizcaya Mansion and Gardens, the Bayshore Marketplace, and various celebrity homes – all from the comfort and safety of a luxurious yacht.

And while the are many different cruise companies out there, Happy Cruises and Tropical Sailing are two of the best.  Also be sure to select a cruise that departs from Coconut Grove, a charming, historic village in Miami that is a romantic place from which to base yourself.

While you’re in Coconut Grove, enjoy a wonderfully romantic stay at the Mayfair with its Mediterranean-style decor and its central location near the coolest restaurants in town.

And to sample some of the area’s finest cuisine, stop by Bombay Darbar for delicious Indian food, Sapore di Mare for Italian-style seafood, and Jaguar Ceviche for pan-Latin cuisine.

Because If you’re looking for one of the most romantic getaways in the USA, then you can’t go wrong with Miami.

4. Nashville, Tennessee

By: Jackie of Jou Jou Travels

An aerial view of Nashville, Tennessee

Known as the “Music City.” Nashville, Tennesse is a vibrant place that is full of culture, music (country music to be specific!), and flair, easily making it one of the most romantic getaways in the USA.

And one awesome thing to do here is to learn all about Elvis Presley’s historic presence in the city. See, he spent many years here and recorded more than 200 songs at the iconic, RCA Studio B.

Next, admire the many outdoor murals that can be found throughout the city. Be sure to snap a photo with your significant other at some of the city’s most famous pieces, including The Drippy Lips Mural (a wall full of lips at 1814 21st Avenue South) and The What Lifts You Wings (a huge set of butterfly wings you can stand in front of at 302 11th Avenue South).

It’s a truly spectacular region that offers visitors rolling hills full of vineyards, unbelievably scenic wineries with some of the most luscious cabernets in the world, world-class hospitality, and an unmatched dining scene (if you have the $$$ to spare, that is).

Afterward, check out the constellation studded ceiling at Albertine bookstore before going downtown to NYC’s iconic, Empire State Building.

if you can, time your visit for sunset so that you can enjoy sweeping views of the NYC skyline – from on the 88th and 102nd floors respectively – with a kaleidoscope of = colors dancing in the background.

Next, walk hand in hand with your partner across the Brooklyn Bridge (walk from Brooklyn to Manhattan for the best views) before enjoying one of the most romantic things to do in NYC , dinner at Buvette.

It’s a charming, French bistro in Manhattan’s West Village that is known for delicious coq au vin, exceptional wine, and rustic steak tartare.

For the best seats in the place though, sit at the spacious marble bar and snuggle up with your significant other while savoring a wonderfully comforting plate of Croque monsieur.

Afterward, spend a glorious night unwinding in the plush beyond belief, Royalton hotel in Midtown west. it’s a supremely chic, boutique hotel where you can sip on delicious craft cocktails in the Sorrento Sunrise before retiring to one of their lavish rooms – all of which include fireplaces, private circular tubs, and swoon-worthy mahogany furniture.

2024 4th of July Door County itinerary

The BEST 2024 4th of July in Door County Itinerary

Door County

anniversary trips door county

I realize it was JUST the 4th of July, but considering it’s fresh in my mind and because I’m getting about a dozen questions a day about how to reserve a place in Door County for the 4th of July NEXT year, I thought it was worth a post about how to plan the perfect trip to Door County over the 4th of July because the truth is, if you’re not planning NOW for where to stay for next years 4th, you’ll likely be out of options.

Let me start by saying that I never miss a 4th of July in Door County. It is better than Christmas for me. My favorite holiday, favorite place, my entire extended family visits there, and the county comes alive putting on a show for all the visitors. It’s something special and I encourage you to consider spending your next 4th here if you can!

The best Door County 2024 4th of July itinerary

Where to stay.

You’re definitely not alone in wanting to spend the 4th in Door County and many places book out a year in advance. We’ll be opening up our calendars the week of August 14th and you’ll want to jump on this waitlist right here to be notified. In our opinion, the best places to stay in Door County is to have a home base on the quiet side . Why? It’s a nice central location to be able to easily hit up all the touristy things up and down the peninsula all while having an oasis and “up north at the cabin feel” – best of both worlds in our opinion. We’ve got 4 unique waterfront cabins to choose from that are dog friendly, have boat rentals, and are cabin cozy.

Where to see the fireworks

You’ll have a few options to see fireworks over several nights surrounding the 4th, but the best one? Egg Harbor on July 3rd. Our insider tip is to head down around 5 or so and grab pizza at Pizza Bros connected to One Barrel. They’ve got live music typically starting at 6:00 on the patio, yard games, beer, cider and seltzers on tap and it’s the perfect place to kickoff your night because you can walk to your next stop to view the fireworks later in the night.

The best Door County 4th of July Parade

Again, several of the towns have parades, but the best in our opinion is Bailey’s Harbor. You’ll want to get down there to park by 9:00AM before roads are closed down and to give yourself time to grab a drink and a brat for breakfast (hello Wisconsin!). Our pick: A bloody Mary from the new Lake Fire Winery where they use wine instead of vodka in their Bloody Mary’s (surprisingly delish!) and hit up the brat stand a block to the south. Or, Chives always has great food/drink options at their food trucks serving coffee, mimosas, bloody mary’s and other “breakfast-centric speciality cocktails”.

Other 4th of July Fun

The county truly comes alive this week and I don’t know about you, but a patio and live music is my love language and you will not have to try too hard to find either this week in Door County! Our insider tip for a night this week is to grab a Wickman House reservation (you’ll need to prepare in advance for this, we reserved ours in March when they opened their calendars – join our waitlist and we will let you know when that happens!) or an earlish dinner at Chop and then head to Stabbur Beer Garden for live music. It’s one of my absolute favorite things and always bring artists with the best energy to get people on the dance floor. This unfortunately has to shut down at 10 which is why we recommend getting dinner early so you can catch as much of the live music as possible! Next head to Husby’s for some more live music or across the street to Sister Bay Bowl which is able to stay open later because it’s indoors.

Cabins on Clark Fun

If you’re lucky enough to snag one of our Clark Lake Cabins (The Point or The Bay) you can rent one of our pontoons and participate in the annual boat parade complete with a DJ! It’s such a good time and a unique 4th of July experience. There are also amazing fireworks here on the 4th so you can see 2 nights of display, one over the marina of Egg Harbor and one over the lake.

We generally recommend saving all our other favorite things in Door County for a less crazy week and hit up the above suggestions this week instead! Just make sure to have your lodging secured 9-12 months in advance and dinner reservations 3-6 months in advance and you’ll be set for one of the best weeks ever!

Design Your Dream Trip

anniversary trips door county

The Trip Planner tool helps you curate, design, and personalize your visit to Door County. Simply answer a few questions, and we’ll create a list of restaurants, lodgings, activities, attractions, and events that meet your needs. Want to pre-filter your results based on the place or time you plan to visit? Select a community or season below or explore one our pre-designed itineraries.

Explore Door County Communities

One of the best ways to get to know Door County is to explore the vibrant towns, villages, and communities that comprise it. Some people choose a single community and stay for their entire trip, and others travel between communities to get a fuller sense of place.

Baileys Harbor

Ellison bay, jacksonport, rowleys bay, southern door county, sturgeon bay, washington island.

explore map

A near-perfect confluence of art and nature, Baileys Harbor is home to thousands of acres of beautiful, protected lands.

Here, you’ll also find plenty of space for hiking, biking, motorcycling, and paddling as well as a fair share of independent restaurants, a brewery, a coffee shop, waterfront lodging, and three historic lighthouses.

Carlsville may be famous for its origins as a hub for early settlers named “Karl,” but these days it’s better known for offering an outsized number of artisan goods and shops.

Find local coffee, wine, spirits, sweet treats, and fish boils in addition to farm and animal experiences as well as biking and motorcycling or driving.

Egg Harbor is considered one of the busier and more bustling communities on the peninsula, if dining, shopping, nightlife, and social life are your aim.

Here you will also find a marina, boating, a glittering waterfront, numerous golf courses, hiking and biking, and tons of festivals and events throughout the year.

This tiny town is a fascinating combination of art, history, oddity, and maritime allure. Between The Clearing Folk School, artist studios and galleries, and indie shops, there’s no shortage of unusual experiences to be had here.

Outdoorspeople will enjoy exquisite lake views, dramatic bluffs and cliffs, boating and paddling opportunities, and access to the extraordinary Newport State Park.

Ephraim is known as Door County’s quiet, historic town nestled on the shores of Green Bay.

The idyllic setting offers the famously graffitied Anderson Dock, access to the county’s largest state park, and tons of water sports and activities in addition to a slate of restaurants, fish boils, and old-timey treats.

In many ways, Fish Creek is the hub of Door County. A good portion of the region’s top restaurants, shops, and outdoor attractions are in or near this quaint-yet-bustling town.

Come here if you seek social and family life, arts and culture, historic sites, world-class dining, and shoreline sunsets.

Gills Rock is the last stop at the tip of the peninsula before the highway heads back down south or you (and your car) continue north to the Washington Island Ferry port.

Stop here for the coastal feel, quaint maritime scenery, the famously windy road, views of Death’s Door, the maritime museum, and access remote Newport State Park.

Located on the “quiet” side of the peninsula, Jacksonport is a small town with unexpectedly big attractions, from the wildly popular Cave Point County Park and adjacent Whitefish Dunes State Park to an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops. Jacksonport is a must-stop destination.

Juddville is small and residential enough that you’ll have to head to a nearby town to find lodging, but its rusticness and natural landscapes more than make up for its lack of commercial services.

Come here for the beautiful countryside, the Write On center, and lots of backroads perfect for driving, biking, or motorcycling.

Sitting just across its namesake bay from Newport State Park, Rowleys Bay is an out-of-the-way town tucked away on the northeast side of the peninsula.

Its signature offering is the Mink River and Mink River Estuary, a beautiful and ecologically diverse wildlife area perfect for a quiet paddle, hike, or fishing.

Sister Bay has gained a reputation for being the food, dining, and beverage hub of the county. Options include supper clubs, pubs and taverns, waterfront dining, seafood, bakeries, pizza, craft beer, breakfast spots, and way, way more.

Visitors also flock here for the beaches, where sunbathing, swimming, paddling, boating, and other water sports are all on the menu.

Brussels is quintessential small-town Southern Door County, complete with a quieter feel, rustic farms and countryside, and signs of residents’ Belgian heritage around every corner.

Outdoor enthusiasts looking for the trail less-blazed can enjoy hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ATVing.

Forestville

For those in search of a quieter experience, head to Forestville in Southern Door. From fishing, ATVing, and golf to motorcycling and biking, there’s plenty of space down here to explore the great outdoors.

While cruising around the wide open backroads, keep an eye out for roadside Belgian chapels where you can stop and take in their quiet majesty and reflect on early settlers’ spiritual dedication.

Maritime and nautical themes reign supreme here, with iconic stops like the Pierhead Light, two additional lighthouses, a maritime museum, waterfront parks, a shipbuilding yard, the famous steel bridge, and plenty of fishing and paddling opportunities. Hundreds of shops, restaurants, and the arts and theater scene are also here.

Start with the 30-minute ferry ride across Death’s Door strait and drive your car or rent a bike or UTV to explore the island. You’ll find a few lodgings, restaurants, and food stops, but mostly you’ll find wide-open spaces perfect for biking, hiking, driving, and exploring.

Don’t miss the smooth-stone Schoolhouse Beach, the lavender farm, or the rolling fields of green. If you have a whole day, hop a second ferry and explore incredible Rock Island State Park.

Peoria Veterans honor 49th anniversary end of Vietnam War with trip to Washington

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - 75 service members, and one service dog made the trek to Washington Tuesday.

Among them, Vietnam war veteran Jerry Wright.

“I was a draftee for two years, and I was not a supporter of the war,” said Wright.

He says his time abroad was a complicated one.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but I wouldn’t want to do it again.”

For Vietnam Veteran Carl Lehman, it’s the first time he’s seen the memorials, and it’s bittersweet.

“I cannot stand the Vietnam War wall because I break down too bad, because I lost a few friends over there. And it’s kind of hard because I told them that I would take care of them,” said Lehman.

He says the war didn’t end when he came home. He’s carried the weight of war for almost 50 years.
