Introduction

Location and Overview

Tapachula is a city located in the southwestern corner of Mexico, in the state of Chiapas. It is situated near the border with Guatemala, making it a strategic point for travelers exploring the southern region of Mexico and beyond. The city’s proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre Mountains lends it a unique geographical advantage, resulting in a diverse range of natural attractions.

History and Culture

The history of Tapachula is deeply rooted in Mayan civilization, and evidence of this rich heritage can be found in the nearby Izapa Archaeological Zone. Over the centuries, the city has been influenced by various indigenous cultures, Spanish colonialism, and modern Mexican traditions. The blend of these cultural influences is reflected in the local cuisine, festivals, and art.

Getting There

The primary gateway to Tapachula is the Tapachula International Airport (IATA: TAP). It offers regular flights from Mexico City and other major Mexican cities. If you’re arriving from abroad, you can connect through Mexico City’s international airports and then take a domestic flight to Tapachula. The airport is conveniently located about 20 minutes from the city center.

For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can reach Tapachula by long-distance bus. Major bus companies operate routes connecting Tapachula with cities like Mexico City, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and San Cristobal de las Casas. The journey can be long, but it’s a scenic way to see the countryside of Chiapas.

Where to Stay

Tapachula offers a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets. There are upscale hotels in the city center, providing comfort and luxury. Some popular choices include Hotel Loma Real, Hotel San Francisco, and Hotel Plaza Inn.

Guesthouses

For a more authentic experience, consider staying at one of Tapachula’s guesthouses or boutique hotels. These often have a more personalized touch and can introduce you to the local culture. Casa Mexicana, Casa Panchita, and Casa Luz de Luna are excellent choices in this category.

Airbnb Options

If you prefer the flexibility of having your own space, Airbnb is also a popular choice in Tapachula. You can find cozy apartments, colonial-style homes, and even rooms in local homes. This option allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of Tapachula residents.

Top Attractions

Mercado de Tapachula

One of the best ways to get a taste of the local culture in Tapachula is to visit Mercado de Tapachula, the city’s central market. Here, you can explore a vibrant maze of stalls selling fresh produce, handicrafts, clothing, and more. Don’t forget to sample some authentic Chiapanecan dishes at the market’s food stalls.

Izapa Archaeological Zone

For history enthusiasts, the Izapa Archaeological Zone is a must-visit. Located just outside Tapachula, this ancient Mayan site features impressive stone carvings and pyramids. It provides insight into the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization that once thrived in the region.

El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve

Nature lovers should not miss the opportunity to visit El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. This protected area is home to diverse wildlife, including jaguars, tapirs, and numerous bird species. You can explore the reserve through hiking trails and guided tours, immersing yourself in the lush Chiapanecan rainforest.

Beaches: Puerto Chiapas and Puerto Madero

Tapachula’s location along the coast of the Pacific Ocean means that you have easy access to some beautiful beaches. Puerto Chiapas and Puerto Madero are two popular beach destinations near the city. Whether you want to relax on the sandy shores, swim in the ocean, or try your hand at water sports, these beaches offer a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Food and Dining

Traditional Chiapanecan Cuisine

Chiapas is renowned for its delicious and diverse cuisine. When in Tapachula, be sure to savor traditional dishes like tamales chiapanecos, cochito horneado (oven-roasted pork), and pepita con tasajo (pumpkin seed sauce with beef). Many restaurants and street vendors serve these mouthwatering specialties, allowing you to experience the local flavors.

Street Food

One of the joys of traveling in Mexico is indulging in street food, and Tapachula is no exception. Seek out local food carts and stalls selling tacos, tlayudas (Oaxacan-style tortillas), and marquesitas (crispy dessert crepes). These affordable and delicious options are a must-try.

Dining Recommendations

For a sit-down dining experience, consider visiting restaurants like El Muelle de San Blas, which offers fresh seafood with a view of the ocean, or El Portal del Mar, known for its traditional Mexican cuisine. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of mezcal or a locally brewed coffee.

Coffee Tours

Coffee in Chiapas

Chiapas is famous for its high-quality coffee, and Tapachula is at the heart of the region’s coffee production. Coffee enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to explore local coffee plantations and learn about the coffee-making process from bean to cup. Many plantations offer guided tours and tastings.

Visiting Coffee Plantations

Some well-known coffee plantations to consider visiting include Finca Hamburgo, Finca Irlanda, and Finca Argovia. These visits not only allow you to enjoy aromatic coffee but also provide insight into the sustainable and ethical practices that many Chiapas coffee producers uphold.

Outdoor Activities

Hiking and Nature Trails

The natural beauty of Tapachula and its surroundings beckons outdoor enthusiasts. You can embark on hiking adventures in the nearby mountains, explore lush jungles, and discover hidden waterfalls. Hike to the summit of Tacana Volcano for panoramic views of the region, or trek through the forests of El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve.

Birdwatchers will find Tapachula to be a paradise for spotting a variety of bird species. The region’s diverse ecosystems support an array of colorful and exotic birds. Consider joining a guided bird-watching tour to observe toucans, parrots, and other feathered inhabitants of Chiapas.

Culture and Festivals

Fiestas de Octubre

One of the most vibrant and celebrated festivals in Tapachula is Fiestas de Octubre (October Festivals). This month-long celebration features parades, music, dancing, and traditional performances. It’s an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and join in the festivities.

Dia de los Muertos

If you visit Tapachula in late October to early November, you’ll also have the chance to experience Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). During this holiday, locals honor their ancestors with colorful altars, marigold flowers, and traditional offerings. Witnessing these customs and participating in the celebrations can be a deeply moving cultural experience.

Safety and Practical Tips

Safety Precautions

Tapachula is generally considered safe for tourists. However, as with any destination, it’s essential to take basic safety precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, be cautious when withdrawing money from ATMs, and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas at night.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Respect the local customs and traditions of Tapachula and Chiapas. Ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in indigenous communities. It’s also customary to greet others with a friendly “buenos días” (good morning), “buenas tardes” (good afternoon), or “buenas noches” (good evening).

Money and Currency

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN). ATMs are widely available in Tapachula, and credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants in the city. It’s advisable to carry some cash for small purchases and in case you visit places with limited card payment options.

Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóñez or simply Tapachula is a city of 320,000 people (2010) in Chiapas . Tapachula is Mexico's main border city with Guatemala on the Pacific coast area although it is some kilometers away from the border.

Understand [ edit ]

auto travel tapachula

It is one of the most important cities of Chiapas economically as the capital of the agriculturally rich Soconusco region, and a port for trade between Mexico and Central America.

History [ edit ]

The first human settlements of the peoples that later developed into the Mayan civilization have been found on the northern Pacific coast of what is now Guatemala. However, southern Chiapas state in Mexico and Guatemala were a unified region prior to colonization.

One archaeological site of note, Izapa, is 10 km from Tapachula. In addition, the Museo Archaeologico del Soconusco is located in the center of Tapachula in the same building that houses the tourist information center and the Casa de Cultura.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of the city area is hot and humid most of the year. The area is one of the rainiest in the world with annual rainfall in the mountains of about 3,900 millimetres (150 inches).

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

It is the nearest airport to Tapachula, Puerto Chiapas and the Guatemalan frontier towns of Cd Hidalgo/Cd Tecun Uman; and Talisman/El Carmen. It is also another transit point for onward travel to Guatemala from Mexico as it may be less expensive to fly to Tapachula from Mexico City (or elsewhere in Mexico) and continue by bus or shuttle to Guatemala then flying into Guatemala City from Mexico or the U.S.

By car [ edit ]

From Quetzaltenango , Guatemala , it is about 130 km to Tapachula and will take about 2 hours driving plus whatever time is needed at the border for immigration and customs formalities.

From Salina Cruz , it is 470 kilometers, or about a 6-hour drive to Tapachula via federal highway MEX-200.

From Tuxtla Gutierrez , it is about 370 kilometers, or about a 5-hour drive to Tapachula via the autopista MEX-190D and then highway MEX-200.

  • Most of the city's monumental structures in the historic center were built in the first decades of the 20th century, although there are large homes near this same area built in the 1960s in Art Deco style, such as the La Portaviandas building. Outside the city downtown, the structures just about all date from the latter 20th century on due to recent growth.
  • The historic center is marked by a large, tree-lined plaza called Parque Miguel Hidalgo . The center of this plaza contains an octagon kiosk with Baroque ironwork with some Moorish influence. Parque Miguel Hidalgo is the center of the city. It surrounded by the old and new municipal palaces, the Perez Porta and the Teatro al Aire Libre (Open Air Theater), which often has marimba concerts.
  • The San Agustín parish church dates from the 18th century, established to honor the patron saint of the city, Augustine. It is a simple construction with a red Spanish tile roof, supported by wood beams. The facade is a simple Neoclassical with six Ionic order columns, three on each side of the entrance, joined by false arches. The top of the facade has two bell towers. This design is based on the Teopisca church. The church became a cathedral in 1958, shortly after the Tapachula diocese was established but that status has since been ceded to the San José Cathedral, consecrated in 2009.
  • The Casa de Cultura was built in 1929 as the municipal palace when the city was prosperous because of the surrounding coffee plantations. Although the style is Art Deco, the facade is decorated with Oaxacan style fretwork, images of Aztec warriors and stylized serpents along with the Mexican and state coats of arms. Today, the building functions as a cultural center for the city.
  • 14.9101 -92.26544 1 Museo Arqueológico del Soconusco , 8a Av Nte #24, Zona Centro ( housed in the old city hall ( antiguo palacio municipal ) building next to the Parque Central de Miguel Hidalgo in downtown. ), ☏ +52 962 626-4173 . Tu-Su 09:00-18:00 . A small museum that has a collection of Mayan & Olmec artifacts from the region. This building houses a number of pieces from the various archeological sites of the region, especially Izapa and several coastal sites. One special piece is a skull covered in gold and incrusted with turquoise. Another is a stele called Number 25, because of the quality of its engravings. ( updated Aug 2020 )
  • The municipal cemetery is notable as a testament to the immigrant past of the area, with gravestones with German names and Chinese characters. The best examples of both date from the late 19th to early 20th century.
  • Head out of town a little to Calle Miguel Hidalgo (the one out near Calle Semanarista) and check out the crocodile zoo . A quirky little backyard business that houses something like 50 crocodiles and alligators of various species and sizes. the family that runs it is friendly and as much as seeing the crocs themselves it's funny to watch small children chase an even smaller puppy around a backyard literally packed with ferocious reptiles in various cement and chainlink enclosures. Cost is M$25 per person, and a taxi should cost about M$25 each way.

  • 14.913104 -92.266208 1 Mercado Escobar , Calle Décima, Norte, Centro . Daily 05:00 - 20:00 . If it exists or can be imagined, it is for sale at the Mercado Escobar, Tapachula's oldest and largest traditional marketplace. Aisles of fresh produce and just-butchered meats have their sections as do electronics vendors, clothing vendors, candies, mezcals, and all the other necessities of life. The place is a gloriously chaotic jumble of humanity. Don't worry if you can't speak Spanish, most vendors understand Mayan too! ( updated Mar 2024 )

If you´re on a budget, Tapachula has very affordable lodgings. One example is Hotel Tacana (8a Norte at 13a Poniente). The rooms go for as little as M$100 per night and many have been newly renovated.

Located a block and a half from the main plaza in town (Miguel Hidalgo), on 5a calle pointe, one of the cheaper places to stay is Hotel Quinta instantly recognizable by its astonishingly large sign that says "hotel" in black and white vertical letters.

The lowest budget rooms go for M$200 with no television and no air conditioning. Rooms are a little dirty and toilets have no toilet seats but you can't beat the price in this part of town.

Subscriber only, transportation | ‘flying cars’ may be the next mode of travel for south florida commuters, will regulators be ready when electric flights reach for the skies.

Looming not far off to the northwest: the Seminole Hard Rock’s massive Guitar Hotel in Hollywood. Suddenly, it was easy to decide where to conclude this brief experiential trip.

With a few nudges of a joystick, the two-seat eVTOL descended gently and safely onto the roof, some 450 feet up.

Well, that was according to the flight simulator at Doroni’s headquarters in Pompano Beach.

Decades after The Jetsons, the animated TV sitcom that featured flying cars in the 1960s, developer-entrepreneurs are edging American commercial aviation toward the day when electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft will roll out of suburban garages for work commutes to downtowns, or shopping trips and dinner-and-movie dates in the suburbs.

Last year, Doroni founder and CEO Doron Merdinger made headlines when he became the first person to pilot a two-seat personal eVTOL in the U.S. He did it with a brief in-house liftoff of a predecessor prototype of the H1-X.

Last Sunday, with his company poised to raise a new round of funding to provide a financial lift for the H1-X buildout, Doroni opened its doors for a public demonstration. It’s taking “pre-orders” from the first 500 people willing to put up an initial $1,000 deposit. The anticipated retail price range: $350,000 to $450,000.

“Doroni’s mission is to offer a safety-centric, eco-friendly mobility option to the public, commonly referred to as ‘flying cars,’” the company said in a statement. “By enabling people to transport themselves intuitively within urban environments and between destinations at a fraction of the time possible with traditional automobiles, Doroni aims to transform the way we travel.”

From the U.S. to Europe and Asia, other companies are developing their own versions of electric flying vehicles, whether for personal travel, or for public transportation, military use, freight carriage or law enforcement and emergency medical services.

One company, Lilium of Munich, Germany, has secured 20 orders from a new Miami-based airline called UrbanLink, which announced last Monday that it intends to start flying a regional air commuter service among Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

During a presentation at Doroni’s warehouse, Merdinger said his company’s eVTOL will be a much better ride for all of those uses than any helicopter can produce.

“There is really not a comparison,” he said, “The helicopter is in constant vibration. It’s annoying.”

Once aboard a Doroni vehicle, “You are sitting on a cushion of air. It’s like sitting on a magic carpet. You are just floating on air. There is no motor, There is no combustion.  It’s all electric.”

Flying car commutes?

But will the H1-X and other craft like it become the future of daily air travel in a dense and congested metropolitan area such as South Florida?

Merdinger believes they can be, and says his H1-X can be configured not only for personal use, but for customized versions suitable for law enforcement, medical rescue services, the military and cargo delivery companies.

“I had a vision — a world without roads where you could live without traffic,” he declares on a promotional video.

The H1-X, he said,  “looks and feels breathtaking.”

The craft can carry 500 pounds, sports eight contra-rotating propellers for lift, and has two ducted fans for moving forward. Top speed is 120 mph. They can fit in a two-car garage.

“One push of a button and you’re up — floating in the clouds with a panoramic view of your surroundings,” Merdinger added on the video.

The two-seat H1-X evolved from an idea in 2017 that started with a vehicle that had only one seat and an open cockpit. But that first version fell short as a viable product for wide distribution.

The ensuing H1,  which was certified last year by the Federal Aviation Administration for test flights, underwent up to 70 tests inside Dorani’s facilities. And last July, with Merdinger at the controls, the aircraft rose in the company hangar in a test billed as the “the first-ever US manned test flight of a personal 2-seater eVTOL.”

The “more optimized” H1-X was unveiled in March. It needs its own FAA certification, a spokeswoman said, “as we are planning full scale outdoor flights with it showcasing the full specifications.”

“Our target is to submit the H1-X to the FAA for certification and proceed to mass production in 2026,” the company says in a circular for investors.

The airframe is being manufactured elsewhere by a partner Merdinger would not identify. “I cannot disclose at this point, but [it’s] in the U.S,” he  told reporters.

Merdinger emphasized that safety is a top priority.

It’s simple enough to operate, he said, for a youngster to be at the controls.

It is equipped with a parachute and has an anti-collision system that would prevent people from flying into buildings or other aircraft. If a pilot heads for restricted airspace, the vehicle will prevent the pilot from going there, Merdinger said.

Merdinger said the aircraft’s developmental journey started after he moved to South Florida from Israel 11 years ago with his wife and children on a talent visa, which according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is designed for people with “extraordinary ability in the sciences, education, business, or athletics.”

Later, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

“Florida is considered to be the biggest aviation hub,” Merdinger said, explaining why he chose the Sunshine State. “We have the support of the state of Florida.”

In 2020, Space Florida, along with the Florida Venture Forum, awarded Doroni Aerospace a second-place finish in an all-virtual Aerospace Innovation and Tech Forum competition among 20 companies.

Doroni has the enthusiastic support of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, the economic development agency of Broward County.

“There’s no doubt that it’s coming,” David Coddington, senior vice president – business development, said of the evolution of the electric-powered aircraft. “Even in Paris — the Olympics this year are supposed to have some working eVTOLS to take people around.”

“There’s all different designs out there,” Coddington added. “Doroni’s new design is pretty cool looking.”

He sees real estate developers making space for them in their residential and commercial projects.

“When you think how much wealth there is here in South Florida, there’s a market here for it, without a doubt,” he said.

But it’s a price point makes it largely a product for the top 1%, asserted Gregory Stuart, executive director of the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, which plots transportation policy for the county and arranges federal funding for public projects.

“It’s interesting but it’s not completely baked,” Stuart said.  “I’m really excited to see it but in the end it’s early.”

“It doesn’t mean it can’t change over time and develop,” he added. “It’s a sexy thing because we all saw the Jetsons. The people in the upper 1% of our economy — they are the ones who will end up using it. It’s not going to replace the [proposed] Coastal [Rail] Link, it’s not going to replace our friends at Brightline or the single persons running up and down on I-95.”

Even at the Hard Rock, the specter of eVTOLS dropping off gamblers, concertgoers and dining-out patrons atop or near the Guitar Hotel seems a bit far-fetched.

“This subject is too new for a meaningful comment,” said spokesman Gary Bitner.

Rules for the eVTOL highway

There is also the question of how and when regulators, namely the FAA and the Florida Department of Transportation, will lay out rules to accommodate eVTOLs in the air and on the ground.

“What once seemed only real in movies or cartoons is happening,” the FAA says in a web post on what it calls Advanced Air Mobility. “Our job is to ensure this new generation of air taxis maintains the high level of safety that defines commercial aviation today.”

It says the Biden-Harris Administration intends to use the craft as part of a “vision of transportation that is more efficient, more sustainable, and more equitable, while creating thousands of great jobs.”

In April, the Florida Department of Transportation conducted a series of meetings in Tampa to scope out how the new technology will fit in the state’s overall scheme of travel.

“Florida is an ideal target market for this technology and for related business opportunities,” said DOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue in a statement. “The efforts we are making now lay the groundwork for this upcoming option and will ensure success in the future.”

The meetings involved public and private sector leaders who discussed how needs, challenges, streamlined processes, and the development of “necessary infrastructure to begin AAM services in the Sunshine State.”

But an FDOT spokesman in Fort Lauderdale did not have any immediate information on what it all meant for South Florida.

“From what we know you will be able to take off and land from private and personal property or property that will give you permission,” Merdinger said by phone on Thursday. “We expect to fly a couple of hundred feet to 500 or 1,500. They know this technology is coming. We are now working on the rules for this category.”

“We are waiting for the FAA, and from what we know so far they are talking about corridors or highways in the sky — you go up and go to a route — a specific road in the sky,”  he added. “There are already rules for aircraft. We don’t expect this to be working too differently.”

Some would-be owners say they don’t have to worry about how local airspace will be controlled.

Matt Gillio, who operates an avocado farm in Ventura County, Calif., which is just north of Los Angeles, said he’ll use his “to check my fields.”

“From the air you can see things a lot better,” he said in a telephone interview. “It’s a lot quicker to be doing my job.”

“All of our stuff is within a 30-mile range,” he said. “I have an office with a big barn. I would charge at my office and take off from my office.”

Gillio said he tried drones, but “it really didn’t work out.”

“I would never do helicopters, they are too complicated and hard to fly,” he added.

Electric-power aircraft are “the wave of the future,” Gillio said. “I think it’s going to be a big deal. It’s exciting to be on the ground floor.”

Travelers is the latest California insurer to raise rates. How to find coverage in your area

Travelers Insurance, one of California’s largest home and auto insurers, is set to increase its rates by an average of 15%, the latest in a string of rate increases and policy limitations that major insurers say is caused by wildfire risks, reinsurance costs and inflation.

Given the go-ahead by the California Department of Insurance this week, Travelers will update its rates for more than 320,000 homeowners starting June 24. It’s not immediately clear what areas in the state will see higher rates.

Michael Soller, the state Department of Insurance’s deputy commissioner for communications, said the shortage of information is “frustrating across the board.”

The department, he said, is doing its best to make sure consumers don’t pay more than they’re required. Travelers’ premium increases, he said, are completely legal under Proposition 103, the 1988 ballot measure that regulated property and casualty insurance pricing.

The average cost of homeowners insurance in the state is $1,250 per year, or about $104 per month. That’s less than the national average of $1,915, according to Nerdwallet . The average cost for a homeowner in the city of Los Angeles is $1,485 a year, or about $124 a month.

Travelers is the latest major insurer to increase rates, limit the number of new policies issued or pull out of the California market altogether — all actions that are straining the market.

In April, Tokio Marine America Insurance Co. and Trans Pacific Insurance Co. notified the insurance department that they will not renew 12,556 homeowners policies with a premium value of $11.3 million, starting July 1.

State Farm, Farmers and Allstate have limited their offerings in California by cutting back on the new policies issued or tightening underwriting standards. State Farm, for example, announced in March that it would not renew 72,000 policies. Allstate, however, has stated that once the industry-favored insurance reforms that Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara proposed go into effect, it will begin writing new homeowner insurance policies in the state, Soller said.

Last year, Geico removed all its in-person offices in the state and is offering policies only through the company’s website or app.

To make insurance rates “more predictable and insurance more available” in the state, Soller said the department is continuing its progress in updating its regulations.

That update could let insurers use algorithms to predict the future risk that properties face from wildfires. Lara is proposing to let insurers use catastrophe modeling when setting the price of policies. Currently, premiums are based on an insurance company’s past losses. This is one of several proposals Lara advanced in a Sustainable Insurance Strategy announced last year.

Even though insurers are making significant changes to their coverage offerings, many are still issuing new policies in California. Here is a partial list:

Farmers Insurance Group offers limited homeowners insurance policies in California, with a monthly cap at 7,000 new business policies.

Mercury is not only offering new policies and renewing existing ones, it’s also taking on customers from Tokio Marina America and its subsidiary, Trans Pacific Insurance Co. — both agencies that pulled out of the California market.

Chubb and its subsidaries, which include Federal Insurance Co., Vigilant Insurance Co. and Pacific Indemnity Co., offer and renew home policies, but with two limitations. It stopped writing high-value homes with higher wildfire risk and isn’t renewing some high-value homes.

USAA is offering new policies if the homes meet its underwriting criteria, which confine the insurer to low-risk properties.

Other insurers that continue to renew or issue new policies in the state are Auto Club of Southern California, Liberty Mutual and American Family.

When a prospective or current homeowner is having trouble finding a policy in their area, the last resort is the California FAIR Plan Assn. A state-established program funded by insurers doing business in California, its mission is to provide homeowners with an affordable policy option when the traditional market fails them.

To find which insurers are offering policies in your area, the California Department of Insurance has a “Home Insurance Finder” tool that will help you locate a provider within 5 to 75 miles of your property.

WASHINGTON — A driver was found dead after crashing into an outer perimeter gate of the White House complex Saturday night, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m., posed no threat to the White House, and the public doesn't face any ongoing safety concerns, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi shared on X , formerly Twitter.

Officials said in a statement early Sunday that “security protocols were implemented as officers cleared the vehicle and attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered deceased.”

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department identified the driver as an adult male and shared in a post on X that the vehicle crashed into a security barrier around the complex. Law enforcement officials added that the incident is currently being investigated “only as a traffic crash.”

The Secret Service said it will continue investigating the matter while the fatal part of the crash will be turned over to Washington police.

For Pump Prices, No News is Good News

By: andrew gross.

Andrew Gross 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 9, 2024)—Gas prices posted a quiet week, with the national average drifting lower by three cents to $3.64 since last Thursday. Tepid pre-Memorial Day domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel are the likely culprits.

“The current news cycle is jam-packed, so not having gas prices in the mix should be a welcome relief,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “Most consumers will probably see pump prices barely budging for now. That’s important because, on May 13, AAA will release the Memorial Day travel forecast, which could be a robust weekend for car trips. Stay tuned!”

How to plan a weekend in Le Mans, gateway to France's Loire Valley

Le Mans may be best known for its 24-hour car race but the French city offers more than high-speed thrills. Explore its old town then venture into the Loire Valley for canoe trips and chateaux stays.

An aeriel view of the village of Le Mans. The buildings are traditional, and the centre building towers over the rest.

To most people, ‘Le Mans’ means racing cars. For over a century, this medieval city in the Loire region of northwest France has hosted the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans, an iconic rally around the Circuit de la Sarthe that’s as much a test of stamina as speed. You’ll find plenty of nods here to this rich motoring history, from postcards of classic Aston Martins to a dedicated museum that displays numerous race cars.

But you don’t need to be a petrolhead to fall in love with Le Mans; it’s a place with the most evocative of ancient centres, featuring cobbled alleys, some of the world’s best-preserved Roman walls and a blockbuster of a cathedral with beautiful stained glass. There are both intimate restaurants and busy al fresco bars by the river where you can take a bench seat and soak up the atmosphere. And Le Mans is a springboard to much more besides, from the pottery centre of Malicorne and the rustic charm of the Mancelles Alpes area to the royal city of Loches. And all this can be reached flight-free, with the train journey from St Pancras International taking just four-and-a-half hours.

Day 1: River trails & Old town strolls

Morning Le Mans can wait — start your day with a 20-mile drive south west to Malicorne-sur-Sarthe. The pretty town, with its 12th-century church and watermills, has been a heartland of French earthenware since the 18th century. Set in a former ceramics factory, the Malicorne Museum of Earthenware and Ceramics lets you try your hand at pottery-making and browse displays of earthenware, from tobacco jars to white Malicorne ducks with yellow feet. Down the road, Boutique Métiers d’Art sells the work of local artisans, including potters and jewellers. Have lunch at quirky Salon Arthé (7 Place de la République), run by painter Katrin Ehlers, with its dining room-cum-studio full of easels and canvases.

Afternoon On the way back to Le Mans, stop at Roëzé-sur Sarthe to enjoy a riverboat ride. Nautical Adventure rents out watercraft including electric boats, so spend an hour looking for kingfishers on this peaceful stretch of water. After that, crank up the pace at the Motor Museum of the 24 Hours of Le Mans . It showcases 140 racing cars and reveals the history of the epic race with fascinating archive footage. Its Heroes’ Alley tells the tales of individuals who have made special contributions over the years, focusing not only on the drivers but also the engineers who play such a key role in getting the cars across the finish line in the endurance race. You can take a tour of the circuit, too.

Evening Arrange an evening tour of Le Mans old town with tour guide Nathalie Jupin . You’ll stop at the town hall that was once the palace of Matilda, granddaughter of William the Conqueror, who gave birth here to the future King Henry II of England, and at the Cathedral of Saint Julian of Le Mans, home to a 12th-century stained-glass window. Equally engaging are the town’s smaller details, such as the stone obelisks on street corners that once protected buildings from carriage wheels and the fourth-century arch that leads to a section of Roman wall. Wrap up the day with a meal of veal steak and heritage vegetables at the intimate, wood-beamed Bistrot des Gourmets 6 Rue Barbier.

Day 2: Canopy climbs & abbey visits

Morning Drive 40 minutes north to the Mancelles Alpes, a region of wooded hills, jagged cliffs and charming villages that follows the valley of the River Sarthe. You can take to the river once more, this time in a canoe or kayak rented from Préférence Plein-Air , just outside the Camping du Sans Souci site in the village of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe. Alternatively, don a safety harness and try a spot of tree climbing in the commune of St Léonard-des-Bois. Parc Aventures du Gasseau has constructed a series of rope walkways, tunnels and swings among the oak trees in the grounds of its restaurant, La Maison du Gasseau . Afterwards, enjoy a lunch made from organic, local produce on the atmospheric terrace of the chateau.

Afternoon Heading back to Le Mans, make a stop 10 minutes from the centre at the L’Épau Abbey . This Cistercian complex was founded in 1229 by the English queen Berengaria of Navarre, widow of Richard the Lionheart, who’d been killed in battle 30 years earlier. A skeleton discovered in the abbey church in the 1960s is thought to be hers and has since been reunited with her tombstone here. You get a real feel for monastic life as you explore, calling in at the dormitory, where the monks slept on mats on the floor; the scriptorium, where they copied manuscripts; and the church, where they prayed eight times a day. Afterwards, take a walk through the Arch of Nature , a two-square-mile reserve that abuts the abbey grounds and includes a nature trail featuring artworks inspired by local wildlife.

Evening Dinner is in Le Mans at Brasserie Madeleine (7 Place des Jacobins), a family-run restaurant in a square overlooking the cathedral. it serves a good selection of seafood dishes — lobster, oysters, mussels and more — and a fabulously creamy rillette on thick pieces of toast. Then it’s time for La Nuit des Chimères , a free light show. At sundown every day in summer, more than 20 of the city’s buildings, walls and trees are illuminated with colourful images, from fairytale characters and historical symbols to portraits of locals who’ve made a special contribution to life here. The tourist office has a map with a walking route that takes in the illuminations. Round off the evening with a drink at Guingette des Tanneries (Square des Tanneries, Quai Louis Blanc), a relaxed riverside restaurant.

Where to stay in Le Mans

1. La Maison du Gasseau A blue-grey stone chateau with green shutters in the Mancelles Alpes, this place was built as a family home in 1939 and now offers six guest rooms with exposed beams and wooden floors. The breakfast features freshly baked scones, local honey and home-churned butter.

2. Domaine de L’Epau With grass rolling over their roofs, the six eco-lodges here look like Hobbit homes buried in the landscape. The interiors are unfussy and modern, with terraces perfect for an evening tipple. Kitchenettes mean you can self-cater but the complex also has a bar and restaurant.

3. Montmirail castle Parts of this castle, standing proud between Le Mans and Chartres, date back to the 12th century. Its guest rooms brim with a sense of history, and each is individually decorated with heritage features such as four-poster beds and elegant wood panelling.

4. Aventure Nautique Set on the banks of the River Sarthe in Roëzé-sur-Sarthe, Aventure Nautique has 10 bell tents that allow full but comfortable immersion in nature. Hire one of the site’s paddleboards or electric boats for a river adventure then kick back with a mojito at the characterful bar set in a shack.

5. Maison Courtin In La Chartre-sur-le-Loire, Maison Courtin is owned and run by Grégoire Courtin, who rents out a couple of guest rooms furnished in 19th-century style. He’s also the proprietor of the adjacent brush shop and homeware museum and will gladly give you a tour of his hoard of curiosities, ranging from model Aston Martins to 18th-century medical instruments.

What to eat in Le Mans

1. Rillettes A pâté of shredded pork cooked in fat that’s typically smothered on toast, rillettes originated in nearby Touraine but became associated with Le Mans when a local started selling it to passengers passing through on the train. There are several annual celebrations of the speciality, including the annual Spring of Rillettes festival held in Sarthe.

2. Chenin blanc One of the Loire’s wine-producing areas in the south of Sarthe, Jasnieres is well worth a look. Its Chenin Blanc wines date to the Middle Ages when they were made by Cistercian monks. They range from dry to fiercely sweet. Try them at the Domaine des Gauletteries winery in Ruillé-sur-Loir.

3. Sablé biscuits The classic Sablé biscuit, a crimp-edged shortbread, is thought to have originated during the 17th century in Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Named after the French word for ‘sandy’, there are both sweet (orange, lemon, almond) and savoury (green pepper, parmesan) versions. Take a tour of the Biscuiterie La Sablésienne biscuit factory, in operation since 1962.

What to do in Loches

1. Château de Loches and the Donjon The royal city of Loches is dominated by its elevated medieval royal quarter, surrounded by a fortified wall and featuring Charles VII’s royal residence, famously visited by Joan of Arc in 1429. Most impressive of all is the Donjon, an 11th-century castle tower containing dungeons etched with the graffiti of unfortunate former captives. The castle has a varied royal history that includes occupation by the one-time king of England, Richard the Lionheart, in the 12th century. Visitors are issued with interactive tablets that bring the past to life by showing how each of the rooms would have looked in its prime.

A pair of bikers guiding their bikes through cobblestone lanes of rural France.

2. Cultu’raids Concept The city sits on the Indre River, an idyllic tributary of the Loire. You can gain a deeper appreciation of it by renting a canoe from Cultu’raids Concept, which has a base near the centre. From here, you can explore a quiet stretch of the water, allowing you to feel a world away from civilisation. The river is narrow and shallow, winding through a tunnel of overhanging trees. One option is to paddle five miles to the watermill at St Jean, perhaps escorted by grey wagtails, flashing yellow as they flit from stone to stone on the river bed. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of red deer through the branches on the banks. You can also rent standup paddleboards from the company.

3. Green Route A 35-minute drive south west of Loches is the village of Abilly, where you can rent bikes and e-bikes at Les Vélos de Paulette (8 Avenue des Termelles) and join the Green Route, a relaxing cycle path through woodland and fields of sunflowers. After five miles, a road takes you uphill through the village of Le Grand-Pressigny to a 12th-century chateau — guarded by a large model of a woolly mammoth — that now houses a museum of prehistory . Returning to Loches, if you wish to stay overnight, check in to the Hôtel de la Cité Royale , housed in the 19th-century Palais of Justice. Its terrace has views over the city’s castle and church.
