Located just a short drive away, Lake Garda is the perfect place to enjoy some time on the water. You can find plenty of boat tours that will take you around the lake, giving you the chance to enjoy the stunning scenery.

Make sure to bring your camera, as there are plenty of photo opportunities!

Some of the most famous sights around Lake Garda include the Rocca di Manerba, the Sirmione peninsula, and the Isola del Garda.

If you cannot drive, you can take a Ferry from Varenna to Bellano, a train to Sondrio, and a bus ride to Tirano. This journey can take over 4 hours.

How to get to Florence

If you’re travelling from Lake Como, hop in a car and embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque Italian countryside. The journey takes approximately four and a half hours, allowing you to soak in the beauty of the landscapes along the way.

Alternatively, you can opt for public transport. Take a train from Lake Como to Florence’s Santa Maria Novella Station. The journey, with a transfer, takes around 4-5 hours. From there, the city’s well-connected public transport system makes it easy to navigate and explore Florence’s treasures at your own pace.

12. Lake Garda: Unveiling the Hidden Gems of Italy’s Largest Lake

Lake Garda is a beautiful destination with beautiful scenery and picturesque villages. 

After arriving, there are numerous opportunities to explore the attractions of the beautiful Lake Garda. You can rent a boat and sail across the clear waters, enjoying the panoramic views and feeling the gentle breeze on your face. Alternatively, board a ferry and hop between the charming villages that dot the lake’s shoreline. 

You can experience the thrill of an exciting adventure in nearby amusement parks such as Gardaland or Caneva Aquapark . Soak up some sun on the beach while sipping a refreshing drink from one of the many lakeside bars. And for those seeking outdoor activities, go hiking or mountain biking through the lush forests surrounding Lake Garda.

Reaching Lake Garda from Lake Como

If you prefer a leisurely drive via the A4 highway, hop in a car and embark on a scenic journey through the Italian countryside. The three-hour (approx) drive allows you to soak in the stunning landscapes along the way.

Alternatively, you can opt for the convenience of public transport. Take a train from S. Giovanni (Lake Como) to Peschiera Del Garda (Lake Garda) via Milano Centrale (Milan). 

13. Bologna: A Gastronomic Delight Beckons from Lake Como

To reach Bologna from Lake Como, you have two options. If you prefer the freedom to explore at your own pace, hop in a car and embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque Italian countryside. The approximately three and half hour journey will reward you with stunning vistas along the way.

Alternatively, choose the convenience of public transport for a more relaxed journey. Start from S. Giovanni station in Como City, then go to Milano Centrale, and finally to Bologna Centrale. This journey will take approximately 4 hours. 

14. Parma: Journey into Renaissance History from Lake Como

Lake Como, or Lario or “Lago di Como,” is Italy’s deepest lake. It’s known for the charming towns surrounding its shores, the scenic natural beauty surrounding the lake, and the nearby magnificent villas.

Lake Como is also a popular film location featured in movies like Star Wars , Casino Royale , and Ocean’s Twelve . George Clooney has famously bought a mansion there.

Lake Como, Lake Garda, and Lake Maggiore are Italy’s largest lakes and are all well-known.

📍 Where Is Lake Como Located?

Lake Como is located in northern Italy , about one to two hours north of Milan, by train. Given the short train ride , Lake Como is one of the best day trips from Milan.

My train from Milan took an hour and a half to reach Varenna, one of Lake Como’s most popular towns.

🗓️ How Long To Spend in Lake Como?

Depending on how many towns you plan to visit, you can spend one to three days on Lake Como. Given Lake Como’s proximity to Milan, it’s a popular day trip destination.

A full-day trip to Lake Como, which is what I did, is enough time to visit two to three of its most famous towns.

☀️ Best Time To Visit Lake Como

The best time to visit Lake Como depends on what you want to prioritize.

I visited in May and had to wear a light puff jacket and long pants during my entire Lake Como trip.

💰 How Much Is a Day Trip to Lake Como?

The cost of a day trip to Lake Como depends on where you’re coming from, whether you’re taking a guided tour, and how many attractions you visit, as some have an entrance fee.

You can expect to spend  $60 to $150  when visiting Lake Como for a day.

I spent  $62 visiting Lake Como for a day. I took the train from Milan, took a ferry to different towns, visited an attraction with an entrance fee, and ate two meals.

The three most famous towns in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and the town of Como.

Bellagio and Varenna are known to be the two most unique and picturesque towns . The itineraries below focus on these two towns.

Another very picturesque place in northern Italy is the Cinque Terre .

🪴 Villa-Focused Towns in Lake Como

Some small towns and villages have only one main attraction, usually a villa. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, and Villa d’Este in Cernobbio are good examples.

Each villa is beautiful and unique in its own way, but you may have a limited tolerance on how many you want to see. If you enjoy looking at villas, you can also take a highly-rated boat trip that passes by famous villas.

🤫 Lake Como Towns With Fewer Tourists

Some smaller towns will not have a must-see attraction, but they’re still beautiful and a good option if you want fewer crowds, especially during the high season. Menaggio , Lecco, and Nesso are good examples of these types of towns.

3 Essential Tips for Visiting Lake Como

Here are three practical tips when visiting Lake Como.

🚂 1. Plan your transportation method.

There are several ways to get around Lake Como . Each transportation method has specific things to keep in mind (e.g., ferries don’t run late into the night, buses aren’t as frequent as you may think, trains are only available in some areas), so make sure to plan ahead.

💶 2. Bring small euro bills.

Several of Lake Como’s towns will have attractions with small entrance fees that are cash-only and will not accept credit cards. Paying with cash is also the easiest way to take the buses around Lake Como.

👟 3. Wear comfortable shoes.

To get some of the best views in Lake Como, you’ll need to walk up cobblestone stairs or hike up roads for up to 30 minutes (e.g., Castello di Vezio, which has breathtaking views, is located on a hill).

Getting Around Lake Como

Here’s how to get to Lake Como and get around once you’re there.

How To Get to Lake Como From Milan

Most visitors travel to Lake Como from Milan, which is the easiest and best way to get to the lake. From Milan, you can take direct trains to Como or Varenna.

I took a Trenitalia train from the Milano Centrale train station to the Varenna Esino train station. The train ticket cost about $7 one-way and took an hour and a half on a Wednesday morning.

How To Get Around Lake Como

Once you’re in Lake Como, you can move between the towns by public transport (which includes the ferry, bus, and train), taxi/Uber, or guided tour.

🛥️ Option 1: Ferry

Taking public ferries is one of the most efficient and affordable ways to get around Lake Como, especially if you’re trying to cross the lake in the central area.

The ferries are operated by Navigaziones Laghi . A one-way fast ferry journey between two of the most popular towns, Verenna and Bellagio, took me 15 minutes and cost €4.60 (about $5).

Double-check the departure gate with the ferry employees because the ferry port signs are not always accurate . A handful of visitors and I missed one of our boats because we were standing and waiting at the wrong gate, so we had to wait another 40 minutes for the next ferry.

🚌 Option 2: ASF Bus

The bus service around Lake Como is provided by ASF , and there are several routes you can take. Bus ticket prices vary by the length of the journey.

The easiest way to board a Lake Como bus is to pay cash on the bus , so make sure to have small euro bills or coins as the driver won’t provide change. One of my friends had to ask a local on the bus to break her bill.

🚂 Option 3: Train

If you want to visit the eastern side of Lake Como (which includes Varenna and Como), you can travel by train. The western side, which includes Bellagio, is more challenging to get to by train.

🚕 Option 4: Taxi or Uber

Taking a taxi or Uber is the most expensive but the fastest way to get around Lake Como on land.

You can find taxis waiting at major bus stops and train stations, but remember that they might be rare in some areas around Lake Como. One of my friends staying in Cernobbio had to wait 45 minutes for a taxi after her hotel called it for her.

If you would rather minimize having to plan a Lake Como trip, you can also outsource all your planning by going on an organized tour.

Below are two great ways to organize a day trip to Lake Como.

To help you plan efficiently, I’ve included  suggested times for each activity  based on my firsthand experience.

Itinerary Option #1: Varenna and Bellagio

This itinerary focuses on exploring the two most picturesque and unique towns around Lake Como.

Itinerary Option #2: Varenna, Bellagio and Como

If you want to visit more towns in one day, below is a great way to see the three most famous towns in Lake Como.

Como is further away from Varenna and Bellagio, so you can alternatively visit a closer and smaller town, like Menaggio, to lessen your transportation time .

If you prefer to take the hassle out of planning a Lake Como trip, this guided tour takes you to Varenna, Bellagio, and Como.

Great Things To Do in Varenna

The town of Varenna is often described as Lake Como’s most romantic town with its narrow streets, colorful buildings, and breathtaking lake views.

Varenna is also one of the towns easily reached by train from Milan .

Here are the best things to do in Varenna, two of which are the town’s main attractions.

1. Walk Up to Castello di Vezio

🤔 Why : Located on a hill overlooking the town, Castello di Vezio is a medieval castle with spectacular Lake Como views.

🏰 Top Thing To Do : Walk up the hill to Castello di Vezio and enjoy the views of Lake Como from different angles in the garden. You can also go down underground tunnels that were used in WWII.

During the summer months, the castle hosts a “birds of prey” show on some days.

💰 Admission Fee : €4 (roughly $4.50). You don’t need to buy the tickets in advance, and they accept cash or cards.

⏰ Suggested Duration : 45 to 60 minutes

🍀 Lukiih’s Take : With its breathtaking lake views, Castello di Vezio was one of my trip’s highlights, even though I visited it on a cloudy day. I also enjoyed walking up to the castle after sitting on a train for over an hour.

2. Visit Villa Monastero

🤔 Why : Villa Monastero’s is one of Varenna’s most notable attractions. The villa features lake views and one of Lake Como’s best botanical gardens.

✨ Top Thing To Do : Villa Monastero has 14 rooms to look at and several lake viewpoints in its expansive botanical garden.

💰 Admission Fee : €10 (roughly $11)

🍀 Lukiih’s Take: I didn’t make it to Villa Monastero since I spent more time walking around Varenna’s town center , but from afar, it looks like it has a stunning garden. It seems like a good place to spend extra time if you’re not in a rush to catch your next ferry ride.

3. Explore Varenna’s Town Center

🤔 Why : Varenna’s small town is picturesque and has several scenic spots that are pedestrian-friendly.

✨ Where To Visit: Varenna has two scenic, popular spots: the Walk of Lovers and Molo Riva Grande. The waterfront also has several cafes and restaurants where you can grab a quick bite.

💰 Admission Fee: Free

⏰ Suggested Duration : 10 to 30 minutes

🍀 Lukiih’s Take : I spent more time walking through Bellagio’s town than Varenna’s because the former is bigger and has more things to see, but I thought Varenna was more beautiful overall.

Great Things To Do in Bellagio

Bellagio, sometimes called the “Pearl of Lake Como,” is regarded as Lake Como’s most beautiful town and has more shops than Varenna.

A one-way ferry journey from Verenna to Bellagio takes about 15 minutes and costs €4.60 (about $5).

Here are three amazing things to do in Bellagio.

1. Explore Bellagio’s Old Town

🤔 Why : Bellagio’s town center, also called Old Town, is a highlight for visitors. Walking through the town’s traditional architecture and picturesque area is considered a worthwhile experience.

✨ Top Things To Do : Bellagio’s Old Town is a happening place lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Pick a street and start walking around to see what shops catch your interest. This famous street is particularly scenic.

💰 Admission Fee : Free

⏰ Suggested Duration : 1 to 2 hours

🍀 Lukiih’s Take : Bellagio’s Old Town has many winding and narrow roads, and while the famous street is worth visiting, I found it fun to walk around aimlessly while eating gelato.

2. Walk Along Bellagio’s Promenade

🤔 Why : Bellagio has a well-paved promenade with stunning views of Lake Como within a short walk.

✨ Top Things To Do : Walk along the waterfront and look out at Lake Como. The promenade has gardens, gelato shops, cafes, and benches to rest on. Start your promenade walk here on the north side and end it here on the south side . There’s a set of staircases around here that leads into the lake.

🍀 Lukiih’s Take : Leisurely walking down Bellagio’s flat and open waterfront promenade is a nice calm break after exploring the town’s narrow and stair-filled streets.

Had the weather been better when I visited, I would have liked to explore Lake Como by kayak from Bellagio’s shore.

3. Cross Over to Bellagio’s East Side

🤔 Why : Bellagio’s east side shows a calmer and quieter side of Bellagio. You also pass by colorful houses, gardens, and cobblestone stairs while making your way over.

✨ Top Thing To Do : Make your way down a set of stairs to this scenic spot on Bellagio’s east side.

⏰ Suggested Duration : 20 to 30 minutes

🍀 Lukiih’s Take : I enjoyed walking to Bellagio’s quieter east side after exploring the bustling town and tourist-heavy waterfront. However, the views are not as spectacular on the east side.

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, that despite living in Milan for 18 years, I only properly visited Lake Como this year. It took me a while, but I made up for it by thoroughly exploring the lake this summer, and now want to share my top tips with you.

Surrounded by the steep slopes of the Alps, in Northern Italy, Lake Como is a must-see on any Italy itinerary .

The Y shaped lake is a famously upscale destination where elegant resort towns, charming villages, and Renaissance villas edge the water.

While many holiday makers spend their entire trip sunning themselves by the lake, visiting Lake Como from Milan on a day trip is also really popular.

How to get to Lake Como from Milan 

Before we dive into the best things to do on a Lake Como day trip, I want to go over the logistics of how you can actually get to Lake Como. Here we go over the different transport modes, and the pros and cons of each.  

A Milan to Como day trip is made super easy by the direct trains that run to both Varenna and Como.

The Milan to Lake Como route is served by the Regionale (a 49 minute direct train) and the faster EuroCity (just a 36 minutes train ride).

Throughout the day there are loads of trains to Como San Giovanni from Milano Centrale train station, and they’re also pretty affordable. The prices for train tickets range from 5 to 15 EUR one way.

It can be tempting to drive to Lake Como, but it’s honestly not the best way to get around. The roads are really narrow, the traffic can be awful and it’s almost impossible to find free parking spots.

Driving is a good idea only if you are planning on doing a hike in the area and need to get to the trail head in a small, remote town.

If you only plan on visiting the main sights of Lake Como (Bellagio, Varenna, Como etc), you don’t need a car.

If you still really want to drive, I recommended heading to the town of Como and leaving the car there, as it’s a much bigger town, easier to navigate by car and to find parking.

From there, you can then travel around the Lake Como area with the ferries.

With a tour

If you really want to make your day trip to Como from Milan as easy as possible, then you might want to consider a tour.

There’s a range of different tours to choose from, each of them offering slightly different itineraries. One option is this tour , which takes you all the way from Milan to Lake Como in a luxury coach.

The day includes visits to the most famous sites around the lake, a Como walking tour, a relaxing private lake cruise, and a visit to the villages of Bellagio and Varenna.

As I already mentioned, cars aren’t ideal for travelling around Lake Como, but in high season also the ferries and public transport become complicated. 

Lake Como is one of the most popular destinations in Italy, which features on everyone Italy bucket list , and in high season that means it’s almost impossible to find parking or space on public transport.

How to get around Lake Como 

No matter what time of year you do a Milan to Lake Como day trip, the easiest way to get between the main towns is by taking a ferry.

Most of the towns and villages around the lake are connected by a ferry service or Navigazione Laghi.

There’s various tickets and boat types to opt for, which means you can travel around the lake and explore at your own pace.

The three different types of boats to choose from include: the slow local boat (battello), the rapid hydrofoil (aliscafo), and the car ferry (traghetto) which also takes foot passengers.

Thankfully, ferry tickets are very affordable, with fares starting at $2.50 . You can take a look at the official fares here and plan your route around the lake on the Navigazione Laghi website.  

There is also a public transport system, but due to the Y shape of the lake, it’s not really the most efficient way to get around.

Best places to visit on a Lake Como day trip

There is so much to see and do in Lake Como that you won’t be able to fit absolutely everything in on a day trip to Como from Milan (that’s why I actually suggest extending to a 3-day Lake Como itinerary )!

However, you will have enough time to see the area’s best bits. Here are the most popular spots and must-see places that I recommended fitting into your itinerary.  

First off, start your day early by taking the train to the city of Como and arrive in the morning. This is the busiest town on the lake, and the jumping off point for exploring the rest of the lake and surrounding area.

Don’t waste too much of your time in Como, there’s lots more beautiful sights to be seen elsewhere. You can see the main sights while walking from the station to the ferry port.

The Saint Mary Assunta Cathedral is an impressive example of Gothic architecture that took almost 400 years to build.

Located in the main square, the church is free to enter and is open most days from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.

You could also pay a visit to Tempio Voltiano, a neoclassical temple built in 1927. The museum was opened 100 years after the death of Alessandro Volta, pioneer of electricity who was from Como.  

Make sure to pass through the bustling Piazza Cavour and soak up the sight and sounds of the city.

If you have time to spare, there’s the option to take a ride on the Como-Brunate funicular and catch a glimpse of the view from above.

No trip to Lake Como from Milan would be complete without hopping on a ferry, so next up it’s time to take the boat to Bellagio.

It’s best to opt for the hydrofoil (the fast boat) to Bellagio, the journey takes around an hour, compared to the regular boat which takes 2-3 hours.

Sit back and relax on the ferry, taking the chance to glimpse views of the lake from the water. Once you arrive in Bellagio you can spend some time simply wandering around the picturesque streets of this cute town.

Bellagio is often considered the most beautiful town in Lake Como. Personally, I preferred Varenna, but there’s no denying the charm of Bellagio, and that it’s definitely a very popular spot.

There’s lots of charming things to see, including a picturesque pathway along the lake. One of the must-see sights here includes Punta Spartivento, which is the exact spot where the three branches of the lake meet.

Also here is the 11th century Basilica di San Giacomo, open weekdays 8AM to 12PM and 3:30PM to 6PM on weekends. Entrance is free.

Don’t miss the pretty 19th century Villa Melzi and Gardens, which also offers up captivating lakeside views. Open every day from 10AM to 7PM, tickets cost 8EUR.  

After you’ve spent time seeing the main sights, you may want to take a break or have a bite to eat. Enjoy lunch in one of the many local restaurants and then it’s back onto the lake again.

Boat tour around Lake Como

Next up on your day trip to Como from Milan is a boat ride around the lake. There’s a long list of tours to opt for, one like this follows a well-rounded itinerary.

You will get the best views of the lake, towns, and villas from the water, so it’s something that you really shouldn’t miss out on.

Since you’re only visiting Lake Como on a day trip, you won’t have much time to go inside many of the main attractions, which is why I like the option of a boat tour around Lake Como .

This tour takes around 1.5 – 2 hours and explores lots of the most attractive spots in the area. You’ll be able to see all of the famous villas and beautiful landscaped gardens that edge the shores of the lake.

You will enjoy the view over iconic villas, like Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello or the villa of the famous actor George Clooney, as well as the cute towns, lush green hills and snow capped Swiss Alps in the distance.

This Lake Como boat tour is private and there’s enough room for five people so it’s a good option if you’re traveling as a couple, group of friends, or a family.

You also get to have the bonus of a local guide who will not only pilot the boat, but will also offer some fascinating insight and history about the sights.  

In the summer months you can also request to stop off and swim in the lake’s clear waters – a really magical way to spend an afternoon on your day trip to Lake Como.

This also means that you get the chance to steer away from the busy tourist sights and simply enjoy the beauty of the lake for a while.

Once you’re back on dry ground, it’s once again time to hop aboard another boat, and after a short ferry ride, reach the next stop of your Lake Como day trip; the beautiful Varenna.  

Varenna is yet another beautiful town located along the shores of Lake Como. Ferries leave Como regularly and take around an hour. It’s well worth taking the time to visit Varenna during your day trip.  

The picturesque town was originally only a small fishing village. The town actually has an interesting history and has had a long-standing rivalry with Como.

Thankfully, that’s all water under the bridge now, and this lakeside settlement is a peaceful spot to enjoy on the final leg of your Lake Como tour from Milan.

Some must-see sights here include the Walk of Lovers along the lake. Don’t worry if you’re not in a relationship, this lakeside pathway is simply a nice place for a stroll along the water.

It starts right by Varenna Pier and offers some great views of the lake and the town.

The Piazza San Giorgio (main square) is where you should head to see some of the everyday life of the town, if you have time you could stop for a coffee and a spot of people watching.  

Next up is the attractive Villa Monastero. Famous for its lush botanical gardens, the house itself was first built as a convent in the 12th century. Tickets start at 8 EUR, open everyday 9:30AM to 8PM.

Castello di Vezio

Finally, if you have a little time to spare then I really recommend taking the time to visit the ruins of Castello di Vezio.

It’s a bit of a hike to get there, taking around 30-45 minutes, but the views are so beautiful that I think it’s totally worth visiting.

Dating back to the 11th Century, the castle was opened to the public in 1999. There is a permanent exhibition inside the castle, but the selling point is without a doubt the stunning view.

Back to Milan

Now that you’ve successfully ticked off everything to do in Lake Como on a day trip from Milan, you can hop aboard the train from Varenna all the way back to Milan.

The journey time varies but can take between an hour and an hour and a half.  Depending on what time of the day you wrap up your day trip, you might even have time to explore Milan at night .

If you really want to visit Lake Como from Milan but don’t want to deal with public transport, timings, schedules or parking, then I recommend taking a tour.

Day tours to Lake Como from Milan really make the day run smoothly.

You can just spend the day enjoying the sights rather than worrying about what time the ferry is or opening hours. Everything will be taken care of for you, so that all you need to decide on is the best place to eat lunch!

If you’re visiting Lake Como on a day trip from Milan, you’re probably looking for advice on where to stay in Milan .

I personally suggest staying close to the train station, so that you don’t have to waste time travelling within Milan before your day trip even starts.

What to pack for your Lake Como trip from Milan

You don’t really need anything specific for a day trip to Lake Como. Just remember to pack your usual travel essentials and follow my Italy packing list , and you’ll be fine.

That said, here are a couple of items that you’ll be glad to have once you arrive in Lake Como.

Camera – Given how beautiful Lake Como is, you want to make sure you capture it in all its beauty!

Reusable water bottle – There are water fountains in all the main towns in Lake Como, so you can easily refill your water bottle throughout the day. Even if you’re visiting Italy in winter , it’s important to stay hydrated!

Walking shoes – You will end up walking a lot, so make sure you have comfortable shoes!

Getting there.

Located in the north of Italy, Milan is easy to get to by both land and air. This is the easiest city to get to from the US, though varies a bit depending on the city you’re departing from. Finding non-stop flights can be a bit more challenging, however, there are some from Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Boston (BOS), Houston (IAH), and Dallas (DFW).

Alitalia, Delta, and United all offer non-stop options from Newark to Milan, though all flights from the US fly into Milan’s Malpensa Airport.

Getting Around

Milan is one of the easiest cities to get around, thanks to its layout, and the fact that most of the main tourist attractions are located in the historic center.

Walking – Milan is a very walkable city, and the locals usually do this as their main form of transportation.

Public Transportation – If you’re a newbie to using public transportation, Milan’s is the perfect introduction. While most cities seem to use different, more complicated ticketing systems between metros, buses, and trams, Milan’s is all the same.

No matter which of the 3 you’re using, all are 1.50 Euro, and each ticket is valid for 90 minutes. During that hour-and-a-half, you can use as many buses and trams as you’d like. However, you can only change trains on one Metro journey with a ticket.

If you plan on using their public transportation more than a couple of times, it’s probably best you just get a “carnet”. These are a 10-tiket package for under 14 Euro. You may also like the 24-hour, 48-hour, and weeklong unlimited passes.

There are 17 tram lines in Milan, but they do cover certain areas that buses do not. Some are over 100 years old, and they not only operate well, but are beautiful pieces of history.

Taxis – Taxis aren’t the easiest to hail in Milan, due to the fact that they can’t stop anywhere they’d like to pick up passengers. There are various cab companies, and you have to go to that specific stand to order one. If it’s not in a busier or touristy area, you may have to call one from the phone at the taxi stand which will connect you to their dispatch.

Bike – The city’s BikeMi program consists of over 200 stations throughout Milan, with subscriptions lasting anywhere from 1 day to a full year. It’s pretty easy to ride around in Milan, if you’re already used to cycling.

Where to Stay

Milan is often known as a capital of fashion, and sees a lot of tourism as well as visitors for work and conferences. This obviously makes for a lot of massive chain hotels, shopping centers, and things that may not feel too “authentic”. However, if you know the places and areas of where to stay, you can make sure to have a genuine Italian experience.

Brera – Located just northwest of the city center, sits the trendy neighborhood of Brera. You’ll find a bit less traffic here, along with plenty of locals and tourists. If you’re into art, you’ll love the proximity to the famous “Pinocotera de Brera” art museum.

Not only that, but you’ll be really close to the Castello Sforza, Park Sempione, and the Duomo. If you really want to see some cool architecture history, make sure to walk a bit past the castle to see Santa Maria delle Grazie, which is portrayed in Da Vinci’s world-renowned “Last Supper”.

San Lorenzo – Are you going with your significant other and want a romantic getaway? Perhaps you just love that more “legitimate” Italian vibe. Whatever the case may be, you’ll surely love San Lorenzo.

Located southwest of the Duomo, it’s perfect for venturing through little boutique shops, charming restaurants with traditional cuisine, and more.

Navigli District – Located in southern Milan, this is party central. Your bar, restaurant, and shopping options are limitless and so is Happy Hour, aka, “aperitivo”. Literally, there are bars that offer practically endless free food if you buy a drink. If you’re into electronic music, this is your neighborhood.

Porta Nuovo – Are you a foodie? Look no further than Porta Nuovo. The Eataly complex is a must-try! This 4-story center is all about Italian cuisine. You’ll have so many options among meats, cheeses, pastas, wines, olives, and all things “Italian” you won’t know what to do with it.

For larger budgets, we highly recommend checking out the Montenapoleone area which is known for its various Michelin-starred restaurants.

San Babila and Porta Venezia – If you want to experience Milan like a local, either one of these neighborhoods are great options. You’ll see exactly why Milan is known as such a fashion hub, there well-dressed locals walk down the beautiful streets with 17 th -century pieces of art and architecture lining them.

Piazza del Duomo – If this is your first time in the city, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Piazza del Duomo. Located right in the heart of Milan, it’s home to the Duomo di Milano – a magical Gothic cathedral complete with a marble interior and some of the best views of the city on the rooftop!

Restaurants and Eating Out

First off, you should know that each area of Italy has its own specialties or dishes. In Milan, it’s risotto and ossobuco. Risotto alla Milanese is a creamy, satisfying dish made with saffron, beef stock, lots of butter, and of course, fresh parmesan. Despite this being such a famous Milanese dish, don’t bet on being able to find a good ossobuco or risotto just anywhere in the city.

Il Solferino – But if you do want some delicious risotto, this is the place to go. Not only that, but they offer a massive wine selection and an absolutely magnificent negroni!

Berberé – If you want some amazing pizza, you can’t beat this spot. Made with fresh sourdough and all locally-sourced ingredients, it goes perfectly with their extensive beer list.

Panini De Santis – Who doesn’t love a melty, perfectly-grilled panini? There are so many dozens of panini options, that you will just have to keep coming back! Expect fresh ingredients, various types of cheeses, meats, creams, and more.

Ratanà – It may be one of those “mainstream” options that you always see recommended to tourists, but this is also due to its incredible consistency, amazing history, and just delicious, authentic local cuisine.

First off, the building it’s housed in is absolutely beautiful. It’s the perfect place to grab a glass of wine and some appetizers on date night, or enjoy the great weather and crunchy polenta at one of their outdoor tables. Oh, it also boasts a delicious risotto!

L’Antico Ristorante Boeucc – Having been around since 1696, you can bet they’ve definitely had time to perfect Milanese cuisine. While their menu is always changing, they’re famous for risotto alla Milanese, Mondeghili homestyle meatballs, and ossobuco.

God Save The Food – This is definitely a more trendy, hip spot that offers everything from fresh salads and sandwiches, to soups, hummus plates, fruit, and yogurt bowls. There are 4 different locations around the city, so pick the one that works best for you.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Rita – One of the most well-known aperitivo (Happy Hour) bars in the city, it’s managed to create great cocktails for 20 years now. You can expect a very laidback vibe and friendly staff and patrons along with interesting flavor combinations in both food and drink.

Dolce & Gabbana Bar Martini – As you can probably already guess from the name, this bar is absolutely the epitome of luxury. Located right next to the D&G Man boutique, their garden room is full of plants hanging from the ceiling, coming up from the floor (in pots, of course), and reflective black surfaces everywhere. It’s certainly a “cool” place to visit and have a drink or two.

N’Ombra de Vin – This is certainly more French than Italian, but it’s worth going to because of its massive underground wine cellar! The vaulted stone ceilings are authentic, original, and impressive. You’ll find a mostly younger crowd with great DJs playing, along with live music occasionally.

Lacerba – This is another calm, laidback spot with a beautiful rustic design, phenomenal cocktails of all types, and delicious snacks to keep you snacking all night!

Tempio del Futuro Perduto – If you’re into underground parties, this is the best option. This labyrinth-like club has an on-site library, a room filled with clothes to be donated to charity, and even a vinyl store and dancing school in the day time. They have a garden with barbecues, DJs, and live music in the summer, too.

At night, you’ll enjoy a quality Funktion One sound system purveying the music of top international techno artists.

Masada – If you’re looking for a daytime party, it’s hard to beat this place. DJs, theatrical performances, concerts, workshops, and more are all hosted here. More international techno DJs come here too, so there’s really something for everyone.

Amnesia – One of the biggest names in club culture, this is also one of the most popular clubs in Milan. You can count on the biggest names in electronic music to be here, along with fashion shows, and more.

Milan definitely gets seasons, so make sure you plan your trip around your ideal season. In the summertime, it can be warm and humid, but not overwhelmingly hot most of the time. From June to August tend to be the most popular times to go.

The wintertime can be very cold, though January tends to be the coldest month. Unless you love the cold, we do recommend avoiding this time.

Attractions

Il Duomo – Ah, the legendary Il Duomo. It’s one of the best examples of Gothic style popularized around much of western Europe. While construction began all the way back in the 14 th century, the façade wasn’t complete until the early 1800’s under Napoleon. Talk about dedication!

Da Vinci’s Last Supper – Here, you’ll see the Gothic brick church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the Corso Magenta, which started in approximately 1465. While the church alone is worth seeing, you have to see the masterpiece it holds: Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.

Castello Sforzesco – Built originally in 1368 then rebuilt in 1450, this castle houses a series of museums.  From sculptures, musical history, Egyptian and prehistoric antiquities, to weapons and medieval armor, there’s definitely something for everyone.

Pinacoteca di Brera – This piece of Renaissance history was constructed somewhere between 1651 and 1773. It not only holds the Pinacoteca di Brera art museum, but a library and observatory as well.

Teatro alla Scala – Known as the most prestigious opera house in the world, La Scala theater seats almost 3,000 people. Running from December to May, it’s best to acquire tickets through your hotel concierge or checking the box office.

For this day trip to Lake Como from Milan, I recommend exploring two of the most scenic towns, Varenna and Bellagio. Luckily Varenna has a direct train connection from Milan, which makes it super convenient to get there.

You’ll want to leave early in the morning and take a train from Milan Central Station to Varenna-Esino station. Once you arrive in Varenna, you can spend the morning exploring the top things to do in Varenna , along with some of the best villas in Lake Como .

In the afternoon, take a ferry to Bellagio, where you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the lake, stroll around the cobbled streets, and visit another stunning villa. After having a delicious dinner in Bellagio, you can take a ferry back to Varenna and then the train back to Milan.

For your convenience, I’ve broken down the day trip to Lake Como from Milan itinerary by the hour, so you can easily plan your perfect one day in Lake Como.

Here’s your ultimate one day in Lake Como itinerary:

• 7 am-8.30 am: Train from Milan to Varenna
• 8.30 am-9.30 am: Varenna Old Town
• 9.30 am-11 am: Villa Monastero

As there is one train leaving every hour to and from Varenna, you can also customize this itinerary by starting one hour earlier or one hour later.

However, I wouldn’t recommend going to Lake Como any later than 9 am, as the last train returns at 9.30 pm, so you won’t have that much time to explore the area.

Morning of Your Day Trip to Lake Como from Milan

Train from milan to varenna.

Recommended time: 7 am-8.30 am

Rise and shine friend, it’s time to take a day trip to Lake Como and get a glimpse of the glamorous life of the rich and famous! Make sure to go to bed early the night before so you can get up bright and early to catch the train from Milan to Lake Como.

There are actually two direct trains that connect Milan with Lake Como, one going to Varenna and the other going to Como. Como is located at the southwest end of the lake on one of the tips of the Y-shaped lake. In contrast, Varenna is situated in the middle of the lake on the eastern shore.

For this Lake Como one day itinerary, I recommend taking the train to Varenna because of its central location and easy access to the other towns on the lake. Not to mention that it’s one of the cutest towns in Lake Como !

The trains depart from Milano Centrale Railway Station, which is conveniently connected to Milan’s city center by the M2 and M3 metro lines. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to navigate the bustling station and locate your platform.

The first train leaves at 6.20 am, and there is one train every hour after then. The trains run directly to Varenna Esino station and take 1 hour and 5 minutes. Tickets typically start from €7.10 for a one-way ticket. I recommend booking tickets in advance to guarantee your spot and get the best price!

To maximize your time during your day trip to Lake Como from Milan, I recommend taking the 7.20 am train, which arrives in Varenna at 8.24 am.

Of course, if you want more time to stroll around the town without the crowds, you can also opt for the 6.20 am train. But since attractions in Varenna don’t open before 9 am, it’s probably best to save your energy and sleep in a bit.

You can also opt for the later train leaving at 8.20 am, but then you’ll have less time to explore during your one day in Lake Como.

Varenna Old Town

Recommended time: 8.30 am-9.30 am

Stepping out of Varenna Esino station, you’ll find yourself in one of the most charming lakeside towns in all of Italy – Varenna. Its colorful, picturesque houses set against the backdrop of Lake Como are a sight to behold.

To get to the center of Varenna, walk down from the train station toward the ferry port, and you’ll soon get a glimpse of The Walk of Lovers (Passerella innamorati sul lago). This red pedestrian path takes you to the center of the old town while providing breathtaking lake views.

Once in the old town, you’ll be surrounded by colorful buildings, romantic cobbled streets, and lovely little cafes and shops. Walking around Varenna is truly like stepping into a fairy tale!

While exploring, make sure to find your way to Piazza San Giorgio, the town’s main square. Here you’ll find the beautiful Church of Saint George (Chiesa San Giorgio), dating back to the 14th century, a perfect start to your tour of Varenna’s historic sites.

If you didn’t have breakfast yet, this is also a good time to grab a cappuccino and a croissant at one of the cafes around the square.

If you would rather sit by the lake, head to Bar Il Molo for the ultimate breakfast experience. This local establishment is famous for its stunning waterfront views and delicious Italian breakfasts.

Villa Monastero

Recommended time: 9.30 am-11 am

A day trip to Lake Como from Milan wouldn’t be complete without visiting at least one of the famous villas that line the lake’s shore.

Thankfully, Varenna is home to two of the most beautiful villas in Lake Como – Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero.

I recommend starting with Villa Monastero as this is the bigger and more interesting of the two. It’s typically open every day starting from 9.30 am, but it’s best to double-check their current opening times on  their website  before your one day in Lake Como.

The entrance fee for adults is €10 for the Botanical Garden only and €13 for the Botanical Garden and the House Museum. Most of the time, you can’t visit the interior of the villas at Lake Como, so I recommend taking advantage of this rare opportunity and buying the combo ticket.

Built in the 12th century, Villa Monastero has a fascinating history and plenty of architectural and artistic treasures to admire. The House Museum has 14 rooms with breathtaking frescoes, period furniture, and other artifacts.

The villa also has a beautiful botanical garden with an array of exotic plants and panoramic views of Lake Como.

The park is actually huge, stretching almost 2 km along the lake’s shoreline, so you can easily spend a couple of hours here admiring the plants and taking in the idyllic atmosphere.

Villa Cipressi

Recommended time: 11 am-12 pm

A stone’s throw away from Villa Monastero, you’ll find the equally charming Villa Cipressi, the second must-visit villa in Varenna.

Despite being a little smaller, it’s just as enchanting, with centuries-old gardens cascading down to the lake, making it a delightful next stop on your day trip to Lake Como from Milan.

The villa has different opening times depending on the season, so be sure to  check the website  before your visit. It’s usually open from 9 am to 8 pm during the summer months, and the entrance fee is €10 per person.

The building now functions as a hotel, so unfortunately, it’s not possible to see the interior unless you book a stay. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the villa’s tranquil gardens and beautiful views of Lake Como!

This historic villa, dating back to the 1400s, is surrounded by tiered gardens filled with exotic plants, ancient trees, and, of course, the villa’s namesake cypress trees.

As you wander through the garden, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views of Lake Como at every turn, each more breathtaking than the last.

Despite its smaller size, Villa Cipressi packs a lot of charm, making it a worthy addition to your Lake Como one day itinerary.

Afternoon of Your Day Trip to Lake Como from Milan

Lunch in varenna.

Recommended time: 12 pm-1.30 pm

After exploring the stunning villas of Varenna, it’s time to take a break and refuel with a delicious lunch. You’re in Italy after all, a country famous for its mouth-watering cuisine!

In Varenna, you’re spoilt for choice, but I have two personal favorites to recommend.

First up is Bar Il Molo – if you didn’t have breakfast here, this is your other chance to enjoy their stunning waterfront views. This gem of a place offers panoramic views of the lake and the charming, colorful houses of Varenna.

They have two terraces, and while the lower terrace is open from 8 am, the upper terrace with the best views opens at noon. Keep in mind, Bar Il Molo is quite popular, so it’s worth arriving at the opening time to secure a prime table. Otherwise, you most probably have to wait in line for a while.

While the view from the restaurant is absolutely stunning, the food can be a hit or miss. We had tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce which was quite good, but the Bufalina pizza was a bit of a letdown, and somehow the basil leaves were missing from the pizza.

On the other hand, if you’re up for a more upscale dining experience, Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria is the place to be. Conveniently located adjacent to the gardens of Villa Cipressi, you can walk right in after your garden tour.

The bar opens at 11 am, but the kitchen starts serving food at noon. You might find the prices a bit higher here, but the top-notch service and outstanding cuisine make it worth every cent. Keep an eye out for their iconic table right by the lake – it provides a dining experience you won’t forget!

Remember, whichever place you choose, don’t rush. Part of the Italian lifestyle is taking the time to savor your food and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and it’s no exception on this day trip to Lake Como, either.

Ferry to Bellagio

Recommended time: 1.30 pm-2.15 pm

Once you’ve enjoyed a leisurely lunch, it’s time to set sail for the next leg of your Lake Como one day itinerary – Bellagio, often called the “Pearl of Lake Como.”

Traveling between Lake Como’s towns is easy and convenient as the lake has a well-connected ferry system.

Make sure to check the ferry timetable carefully and book your tickets in advance. The ferry tickets are valid for the selected day between the chosen destinations, so you can board any ferry during the day. Therefore I recommend booking a return ticket between Varenna and Bellagio on the day of your Lake Como day trip.

When booking your ferry ticket, it’s essential to select the correct ports – “Varenna (Traghetto)” for your departure and “Bellagio (Traghetto)” for your arrival. This is a different line from the regular town-to-town service, so make sure you’ve chosen the correct ones to avoid any mix-ups.

For this journey, I recommend hopping on the 1.50 pm ferry. Not only does it allow you enough time to savor your lunch, but it also ensures you arrive in Bellagio with plenty of daylight left to explore this delightful town.

The ferry ride is an experience in itself, offering unparalleled views of Lake Como and the surrounding towns nestled against the hills. The journey from Varenna to Bellagio is quite short, lasting about 15 minutes. Still, it’s packed with beautiful sights that will leave you reaching for your camera.

A little insider tip: try to sit on the left side of the boat to get an up-close view of both Varenna and Bellagio!

Stroll around Bellagio

Recommended time: 2.15 pm-4 pm

As your ferry docks in Bellagio, you’ll immediately see why it’s known as the “Pearl of Lake Como.” This picturesque town is famed for its cobblestone lanes, elegant buildings, and stunning lake views.

Start your exploration by strolling through the winding, narrow streets, where you’ll encounter delightful boutiques, art galleries, and gelaterias. Each corner you turn reveals another picture-perfect scene, making Bellagio feel like an open-air museum.

One street you shouldn’t miss is the iconic Salita Serbelloni. The street is lined with colorful, terraced houses nestled against the hillside and a breathtaking view of the lake below. It’s also home to many local artisan shops where you can pick up some unique souvenirs.

If you want to try an ice cream, head to Gelateria del Borgo for some of the best gelato in Bellagio. Not only is their gelato delicious, but the shop also sells a bunch of other treats that are perfect for a mid-afternoon snack.

Shortly after Salita Serbelloni, you’ll find yourself in Piazza della Chiesa, the town’s main square. This is a great spot to take a break and soak up the atmosphere of Bellagio. You can also visit the Basilica of St. Giacomo, a beautiful church in the middle of the square.

Once you’ve explored the narrow streets of Bellagio, head to the waterfront promenade for some beautiful views of the lake.

The promenade starts at the ferry port and extends all the way to Villa Melzi, the next stop on your day trip to Lake Como from Milan. It’s an incredibly romantic spot, especially in the early summer months when the flowers on the promenade are in full bloom.

Villa Melzi

Recommended time: 4 pm-5.30 pm

No visit to Bellagio would be complete without a leisurely stroll through the enchanting gardens of Villa Melzi .

Located at the edge of Bellagio, just a 15-minute scenic walk along the lake from the town center, Villa Melzi is a 19th-century Neoclassical villa surrounded by lush gardens.

The villa was built for Duke Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a close friend to Napoleon, and the gardens are designed in an English style, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the town.

Unfortunately, the villa itself isn’t open to the public, as it’s still privately owned. But the gardens are available to explore, and you can even take a guided tour.

The gardens of Villa Melzi are home to a wealth of sculptures, rare and exotic plant species, and a small Japanese-style pond. You can even find a hidden cave tucked away in the gardens!

Also, don’t miss the orangery, which is now a museum housing a collection of Napoleon memorabilia.

The gardens are typically open from March to October, starting at 10 am, with the last entry at 6.30 pm. An adult ticket costs €8, and it’s valid for one full day, so you can leave and reenter the gardens as you wish.

Evening of Your Day Trip to Lake Como from Milan

Dinner in bellagio.

Recommended time: 5.30 pm-7 pm

Now, you’ve got a choice to make. You can either catch an early ferry back to Varenna for dinner or seize the opportunity to enjoy an early evening meal in Bellagio.

Since you’ve already spent a lot of time in Varenna, I recommend having dinner in Bellagio – it’s the perfect way to end your day trip to Lake Como from Milan.

The town is home to several excellent restaurants and bars offering an array of Italian dishes and local specialties. However, keep in mind that most restaurants in Bellagio close after 2.30 pm and only reopen at 7 pm, leaving you with more limited dinner options.

But don’t worry, there are still a few excellent spots to grab an early dinner. Here are my top recommendations:

• La Lanterna Bellagio : Conveniently located on Salita Serbelloni, this restaurant offers a relaxed ambiance and a diverse menu of Italian dishes. Try the Caprese salad with pesto, it’s absolutely delicious! If you’re lucky, you might get a table on the street that offers the best people-watching in Bellagio.
• Bistrot Antichi Sapori : Located near the main square of Bellagio, this restaurant is known for its traditional Italian dishes. You can’t go wrong with one of the pasta dishes or a pizza here! The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace to enjoy the warm evening breeze.
• Dai Viga pasta fresca : Craving some homemade pasta? Look no further than Dai Viga pasta fresca. This small, family-run place is famed for its fresh pasta and inviting atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for a casual yet delightful dinner before returning to Milan.

Ferry to Varenna

Recommended time: 7 pm-8 pm

As the day begins to wind down, it’s time to say goodbye to the enchanting town of Bellagio and head back to Varenna.

Unfortunately, Bellagio doesn’t have a train connection to Milan, so first, you’ll need to get back to Varenna to hop on the train from there. However, this also means that you get to admire the stunning Lake Como scenery from the water one more time, which is not a bad thing at all!

You can catch the ferry in Bellagio from the same port where you arrived in the afternoon. The ferries don’t leave as frequently as you might think, so checking the timetable before you set off is crucial.

If you follow this Lake Como day trip itinerary, I recommend boarding the 7.30 pm ferry after you finish dinner in Bellagio, which will arrive at 7.45 pm in Varenna.

The ferry ride back to Varenna is every bit as scenic as the journey to Bellagio. As you glide across the lake, take the time to reflect on your day, basking in the afterglow of a well-spent one day in Lake Como.

Train from Varenna to Milan

Recommended time: 8 pm-10 pm

Once you reach Varenna, it’s a short stroll back to the Varenna-Esino station for your train ride back to Milan.

There is one train back to Milan every hour, and I recommend catching the 8.35 pm one. This gives you just enough time to make it from the ferry to the station without having to rush.

If you happen to miss this train, don’t worry. There’s another train at 9.35 pm, but it’s the last one of the day, so make sure to catch this. Missing this train could result in an unplanned night in Varenna (which isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it could potentially throw a wrench in your travel plans).

If everything goes well and you catch the 8.35 pm train as recommended, you will arrive in Milan around 10 pm. And with that, your day trip to Lake Como from Milan is complete – I hope you had a wonderful time!

Nestled in Northern Italy, Turin boasts rich culture and history, with plenty of art galleries, beautiful churches, opera houses, parks, and libraries to explore.

It’s got a reputation for beautiful Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, and incredible views of the Swiss Alps. As a result, it is known as one of the best day trips from Lake Como.

The fastest way to get to Turin from Lake Como is to drive, which will take about 1 hour and 40 minutes. However, it may be more convenient to catch the train as the trip will take just under 2 hours.

It’s also a nice opportunity to sit back and enjoy the view along the way, so maybe pack a book with you too!

Turin also happens to be a great destination for backpacking as it’s one of the cheapest cities in Italy, offering fantastic value in terms of tourist attractions, food, and even accommodation. For a day trip, simply spend it walking around the city’s Centro neighborhood.

In the historical Piazza San Carlo, you will see streets of tall, impressive buildings that can transport you back in time. It’s a photogenic shopping arcade with two famous churches flanking the side of the square.

Then, make sure to visit the Royal Palace of Turin, an ex-residence for the House of Savoy. Explore the palace complex, Royal Library, and Armory.

Finally, the Egyptian Museum houses a surprisingly grand collection of Egyptian relics, and yes, mummies, across four stories. It’s actually the second most important Egyptian museum after the one in Cairo!

Saint Moritz, Switzerland

If you’re looking for one of the best day trips from Lake Como, then look no further than Saint Moritz. This is the perfect destination for an afternoon or overnight trip from Lake Como. Don’t bother with lots of luggage, just pack a light bag and book your transport. 

Lake Como is known as the jewel of the Italian Lakes, while Saint Moritz is a luxury ski resort town and a top place to visit in Switzerland .

Depending on which way you’re travelling, it takes between 2 hours and 4 hours to get from Lake Como to Saint Moritz depending on if you go by car, bus, or train. 

Saint Moritz is a small town with lots of history, great views and beautiful scenery. It’s located in the Engadine Valley at the foot of the Weissfluhjoch mountain (3’061 m). At the top of this mountain, there is the longest ski run in Europe!

If you’re only staying for one day, take an afternoon walk along Lake St. Moritz which is surrounded by mountains on all sides making it look like an emerald gem set in an icy setting. 

If you have time, take a ride on the cable car up to Corviglia, one of the highest peaks in Switzerland that offers spectacular views of both sides of this beautiful town.

Also worth visiting is the Engadin Museum which has a collection of over 3,000 items that include paintings, sculptures and photographs which were collected from private collectors and museums around the world.

Lugano, Switzerland

Lugano makes for one of the best day trips from Lake Como if you want to get a taste of what Switzerland has to offer. The city is located about an hour away from Lake Como, and it is easily reachable by direct train.

The trains leave from Como St. Giovanni station, and they are very frequent.

Lugano is a city with a very Mediterranean vibe, on the shores of the lake of the same name. There are plenty of things to do on a  day trip to Lugano , starting with admiring the gorgeous view over the city, from the train station.

The old town of Lugano is dotted with beautiful buildings which have gorgeous painted facades. Don’t forget to look up when you walk around. It will take around one hour to explore the historical part of the city.

Lugano is surrounded by mountains and what better way to take the view of the city than going up one of them. The two most accessible are Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore. To get up on either of them, you will have to take a scenic funicular.

The views from the top of the mountains are so beautiful! You can choose to dine at one of the Alpine restaurants serving traditional food such as cheese fondue or rosti, or hike along one of the trails nearby.

Before coming back to Como, don’t forget to buy some Swiss chocolate. Even the cheaper, supermarket one, is delicious.

South Tyrol, Italy

This scenic road trip takes you to lesser-known corners and stunning views. Cross the Stelvio pass and Natural Park, which is a popular road for all those who love alpine road trips.

Uncover hidden valleys and true travel gems on the other side. Travel along via Claudia Augusta, the former Roman trading route, and discover the medieval town of Glurns with its unique small city entry gates and well-preserved homes and medieval walls.

Visit the Resia lake with the bell tower in the lake. The story of this lake is sad but also a must-see when you are in the region.

A tour to the abbey of Monte Maria next to Burgusio, a 900-year-old Benedictine monastery known for its Romanesque art, is also recommended. The area is also known for its castles. The Castel Coira is well-preserved, and its armory is the highlight of the private tour.

The Castello Di Montechiaro ruins are situated nearby and can be visited for free. From there you get a vast view of the valley. Add more  places and things to do in South Tyrol  to your bucket list.

Ascona, Switzerland

There are many  beautiful reasons to visit Ascona , to name a few as to visit a sandy Swiss beach, the Italian/Swiss vibe, the nearly-always sunny weather and the delicious restaurants and shops at the lakeside. 

To get to Ascona from Lake Como, it’s a short 1-hour 15-minute journey by car or 1 hour 35 minutes by public transport (1 direct train and then a short bus ride).

By train it’s most amazing, passing the beautiful region’s scenery along the way that you can see, such as via Lake Lugano! This is one of the best day trips from Lake Como to take by train.

For things to do in just 1 day in Ascona, you can consider a local hike to the Balladrum viewpoint or take a boat to the stunning botanical garden island (Isole di Brissago). Remember that you can book the tickets in advance as it can get busy on weekends!

Ascona also has a beautiful beach area for swimming in Lake Maggiore, which is perfect to relax at before heading out to dinner at one of the local restaurants on the promenade.

For pudding, save yourself space and visit the  L’ Angolo dei Golosi  ice cream shop! For those visiting with children, you can also enjoy the lake while they play at the Parco giochi Angioli playground. 

Milan, Italy

If you are planning to visit Lake Como and looking for the best day trips from Lake Como, Milan is a perfect option, The cheapest and easiest way to travel from Lake Como to Milan is by train. Milan is located just 31 Miles (50 kilometres) from Lake Como.

Trains can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over one hour to reach Lake Como to Milan, depending on where you’re getting off, so plan accordingly if you have set plans once you get to your destination. If you are driving or travelling by bus, it will take approximately 1 hour.

The good news is that all the transport options for the route from Milan to Lake Como are full of beautiful sights with blue waters, winding roads, and postcard-worthy views.

In order to maximize your time, it is recommended to come with a well-defined  Milan itinerary  and you will have enough time to visit the main attractions and get a good feel of the city.

You will explore some of the most beautiful places, magnificent tours, and ancient architecture. Including Duomo di Milano, experience the stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II, and see the Last Supper at the Santa Maria Delle Grazie.

Be sure to also budget some time to explore the Navigli district and have a relaxing pre-dinner cocktail in the Milanese tradition of aperitive. Plus have dinner at one of the amazing restaurants while catching stunning views of the canal.

Alba can be reached from Lake Como by car in just over 2 hours. Driving is the fastest way to reach this gem in the rolling hills of Piemonte.

Although not on everyone’s radar, Alba has long been prized by gourmands and foodies for producing some of Italy’s best food and wine. It is also one of the best day trips from Lake Como.

Alba is the world’s white truffle capital. Truffles grow wild in the forest and are harvested between September and December. During this time, local restaurant menus offer truffle pasta and other delicious truffle concoctions of all sorts.

Some restaurants even feature full truffle-tasting menus, incorporating the tasty fungi into each course. Regardless of when you might visit, take the opportunity to taste this treasure of  Italian cuisine . 

Wine enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the nearby town of Barolo, where Barolo, one of the region’s dominant wines, comes from. Barbaresco is another nearby town worthy of the short drive for some tasting of its namesake wine. 

The historic city of Alba itself is best seen on foot, walking the cobblestone streets and lingering in the piazzas. The city is known for its brick towers, Sineo, Bonino, and Artesian. 

Churches number among Alba’s other impressive architectural highlights. The original Cattedrale di San Lorenzo in the Piazza del Duomo dates to the 5th century, although its ruins lie buried beneath the current 12th-century structure.

Bergamo, Italy

Bergamo is one of the most unique day trips from Lake Como. It’s approximately 30 miles from the lake, depending on which area you’re coming from. Getting to Bergamo from Como is easy.

Take the train via Monzo, which is approximately a 1hr 45min journey, or use the Lecco Trasporti bus service, which is a great budget option taking around 2 hours.

You can easily explore the best things to do in Bergamo in one day, so it’s perfect for exploring on a day trip. This underrated destination has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status and is ideal for history lovers or those who prefer a more laid-back holiday experience.

Begin your day in Bergamo by taking the funicular railway up into the old town (Citta Alta), where you’ll spend most of your time.

Next, stroll around the 14th-century Venetian walls, which have fantastic views over the town, countryside, and the distant Alps. The entire loop is 6km – though you can just choose a short distance – and was once constructed for defensive purposes. However, since the city was never attacked, they remain perfectly intact.

Why take a day trip to Lake Como from Milan?

The best way to visit Lake Como is to spend a few days there, visiting different villages at a slow pace. It’s true. But its not always practical. Here are a few reasons why a day trip to Lake Como is a good option:

• The accommodations on Lake Como can be really expensive and sell out fast, depending on the season . Trust me, I tried to find an accommodation for two nights in July (one of the busiest months) 5–6 months prior, and I could not find a single Airbnb or hotel that fit my budget. I decided to spend two nights in Milan instead, and everything worked out perfectly.
• You might not have more than a day to spend at Lake Como on your vacation in Italy .
• The highlights of Lake Como can be easily seen in one day , so it is a very practical option that helps you make the most of your time in Italy.
• Lake Como is just a one-hour train ride from Milan , making for an easy, self-guided day trip . If you’d like to take a day tour and let someone else handle all the logistics, then there are several options listed below that start in Milan, with this tour being the most popular .

How to reach Lake Como from Milan?

You can reach Lake Como from Milan by train quite easily.

You have to take the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino . Varenna is a village located in the mid-lake area. It makes for the perfect spot to start and end your Lake Como trip , as it is very close and very well-connected by public transport to the other two villages you’ll be seeing on this itinerary. But the best bit is that it is in itself a beautiful gem waiting to be explored ! A lot of people wonder if Como would be a better idea, as I did myself, but Como is actually very far from famous spots worth seeing if you only have one day in Lake Como , like Bellagio and Villa Balbianello.

The first train departs every day at 6:20 a.m. from Milan and takes about an hour to reach Varenna-Esino. The last train back to Milan departs Varenna-Esino at 9:20 p.m. However, do note that these times keep changing, so refer to the Trenitalia website for updated times. On our date, the last train was at 8:20 p.m.!

The way I’d recommend planning is to first see the ferry timetable and accordingly book your train because the first train in the morning might make you reach Varenna much before the first ferry. Just ensure that you take the earliest possible transport to Lake Como and the last train back to Milan, so you have plenty of time to explore Lake Como at a leisurely pace.

However, it may happen that you aren’t able to do that; after all, you’re on vacation, which is okay. We ourselves only started exploring Bellagio at 11:45 AM and yet were able to see all three villages, though we did have to rush to get to the train station in Varenna.

You can book your train ticket costing €7.4 one way (2nd class) at the kiosk on Milan Station or do it beforehand at the Trenitalia website to save time. We were about to miss our train because we were running late and had not booked the ticket beforehand . Sometimes, the Trenitalia website doesn’t work very well, in which case you can use the following two websites to book tickets – Trainline and Omio .

Tips: 1. If you’re buying a ticket at the train station, don’t forget to validate it through the green machine at the station; otherwise, you may be heavily fined. If you have an e-ticket, then validating it is not mandatory at the moment. 2. Get to the train station on time and be ready to board the train first so that you get a seat. There are no seat reservations on these trains, so you will have to stand on the journey to Como or back to Milan if you don’t arrive on time. 3. Don’t end up on the 1st class coach by mistake if you don’t have 1st class tickets. We made this mistake, but thankfully, our tickets were not checked, even though the conductor checked everyone’s tickets around us. We just got lucky!

How to get around Lake Como?

To get from one town to another on Lake Como, you will have to take a ferry . The ferry cost depends on the route, but typically starts at 4.6 euros one way . Two-way tickets do not have a discount , so it doesn’t really matter.

You can book your ticket at the ticket counter after arrival (but so will everyone on your train), so it is best to book the ferry ticket online at the official Navigazione Laghi ferry website a few minutes before you have to board the ferry. The website is also a great way to check the ferry timings for all the stops on your itinerary, as these change according to season!

Alternately, you can buy the one-day Middle Lake pass, which costs €15 per person . The online passes aren’t always available, so you may have to buy them in person. This pass will give you flexibility, but it will not save you any money if you follow this itinerary.

Lake Como Itinerary for a 1 day trip

On this day trip to Lake Como, you’re going to visit three picturesque villages in central Lake Como . They are very close to each other and therefore make for the perfect combination of villages to visit in one day.

Village 1: Bellagio

Why bellagio.

Nestled at the intersection of Lake Como’s three arms, Bellagio is a small town that boasts excellent views of the surrounding mountains. The town is renowned for its vibrant cafe culture, boutique shops, and narrow cobblestone streets that wind through historic neighbourhoods. And that is exactly what you’re here to enjoy.

How to get to Bellagio from Varenna?

As you reach the train station in Varenna, walk 400 metres (5 minutes) to the Varenna Ferry Terminal. Buy your ticket or pass if it has not already been purchased, and take the ferry to the most popular town in all of Lake Como, Bellagio!

What to do in Bellagio?

Walk around and enjoy the beautiful streets, shop, eat, and sit down at a lakeside cafe for a cup of coffee. That’s the perfect way to enjoy Bellagio!

Start by walking down the corniche and up the stairs called Salita Serbelloni until you reach Via Giuseppe Garibaldi. Or simply look for ‘ Famous Street of Bellagio ‘ on Google Maps (marked in the map above). Go to the top of the staircase, and now look down for that view of Bellagio that you’ve seen all over Instagram. Do this first because it’ll get crowded soon—everyone wants a photo here.

You can also choose to head to the Basilica of San Giacomo for a quick look since it is close by. Grab a bite around the area and then head back to the lake to sit under a tree and sip some wine or coffee.

Other things to do:

I haven’t mentioned too many activities to do in Bellagio because I think it is best to take it slow and enjoy the vibe of Lake Como. However, if you’re not the type to simply sit around and would like to see more, then here are a few options:

• Visit Villa Melzi : The gardens are stunning, and it costs only €10 to enter.
• Take a Boat Ride : Everyone who does a boat ride on Lake Como always highly recommends it. However, these start at around €120 per person. The one-hour tour takes you to all the same spots you can see from the ferry, which is why we didn’t do it and have no regrets. But you can consider it for yourself if it interests you.
• Rent a Kayak : Instead, I would recommend renting a kayak in Bellagio and checking out the beautiful villas around Bellagio that you wouldn’t be able to see from the ferry anyway. This is a much cheaper option than going for a boat ride, but obviously you won’t be able to cover as much ground as a boat tour would.

Where do I eat in Bellagio?

We had some pasta at Dai Viga Pasta Fresca because someone recommended it to us. It is a fast-food restaurant with decent pasta. Nothing extraordinary, though, but not expensive, so we were happy with it. Other well rated eateries are Trattoria San Giacomo and La Grotta . Later, we went to a lakeside bar, Bar Sanremo . It is very close to the ferry terminal and has seats under the trees, so it makes for the perfect place to relax and have some drinks/coffee on a hot, sunny day, while enjoying a view of the lake.

After a few hours, when you’ve had your fill of Bellagio’s beauty, head to your next stop! I expect you would spend about 3 hours in Bellagio if you didn’t do the extra activities and about 4–5 hours if you did.

Village 2: Lenno

How do i get to lenno from bellagio.

Take a ferry from Bellagio to Lenno , which takes about 30 minutes . Ferry rides on Lake Como are always a pleasure because of the views of the villages along the way.

Why visit Lenno?

Lenno is a gem of a village, very close to Bellagio. It offers a tranquil escape if you’re seeking a quieter experience on Lake Como . The charming village has an absolutely delightful lakefront promenade , which is a pleasure to walk on. That being said, Lenno is best known for the captivating Villa del Balbianello , which is why it’s on this itinerary.

What to do in Lenno?

After reaching Lenno, walk along the promenade towards Villa Balbianello. Now you have two options: to walk 1 km up a hill to the villa or to take a paid boa t. The boat runs every 20 minutes and costs 12 euros per person return (credit cards are accepted onboard). I will suggest either taking the boat both ways or taking the boat to the villa and walking back from the villa to the village. The reason is that the walk to Villa Balbianello has very steep sections that will leave you huffing and puffing.

Villa del Balbianello

Timings: 10 AM to 6 PM from mid-March to October, and 10 AM to 5 PM from November to early January. Closed on Mondays and Wednesdays

Cost: You have two options for your visit: a ticket for just the gardens, costing Euro 13 per person , or a ticket for a 45-minute guided tour of the house, costing Euro 24 per person , which also includes access to the gardens. Tours are available in English and Italian. If you’re only visiting the garden, then you can buy the ticket after reaching it, but if you’re doing the tour, I recommend buying the ticket beforehand on this website .

Villa del Balbianello will be the highlight of your day trip to Lake Como from Milan. It is an elegant 18th-century mansion with romantic terraced gardens and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The villa’s appeal has been further amplified by its appearance in popular films like Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Casino Royale !

We chose to take the boat to the villa and walk around the gardens, which were an absolute delight. Wear your best clothes, as you’ll feel out of place if you’re not well dressed, but wear comfortable shoes, as there is plenty of walking around.

Lenno village

After visiting Villa Balbianello, spend some time in the charming village. You can go for a swim, hire a kayak or paddle board, sit by the promenade, or go to the Lido di Lenno beachfront. It’s up to you. Before heading back to the ferry terminal, quickly see the church and baptistery, Chiesa di Santo Stefano e Battistero . It has interesting frescoes from the 14th and 16th centuries. Don’t forget to grab a gelato at La Fabbrica Del Gelato !

Again, expect to spend about 3 to 4 hours in Lenno.

Village 3: Varenna

How do i get to varenna from lenno.

Take the ferry from Varenna to Lenno, which will take about 45 minutes . Ensure you inquire about the ferry timings from Lenno to Varenna beforehand so you don’t miss the last ferry out!

Why visit Varenna?

Varenna is an enchanting village that effortlessly combines old-world charm with breathtaking natural beauty . With its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful houses, and inviting lakeside promenade, Varenna captivates. It offers stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, which makes it the best place to see the sunset before heading back to Milan .

What to do in Varenna?

After you get to the Varenna ferry terminal, go right and keep walking. You’ll notice a red railing separates the village from the lake. That’s when you know you’re walking on the “ passeggiata degli inamorata ,” which loosely translates to Lover’s Lane .

We chanced upon this walk while looking for a place to grab dinner and were absolutely delighted. The lane is actually a walkway that skirts along the shore a few metres above the water. It takes you from the ferry terminal, along the lakefront, to the old town. The views are spectacular.

If you have enough time (since you’ve got to catch the last train out and even grab dinner), head up and away from the lake to the town centre, ending at the church of San Georgio.

Where to eat at Varenna?

We were getting late for the last train out, so we ate at the first decent place we could find that was closest to the train station, Alma . It was right by the shore, and the food was nice. However, if you have enough time and are looking for better food, go to one of the following restaurants: Il Cavatappi or Al Prato . Both are very well rated!

Just remember that you do have to walk all the way back towards the ferry terminal to reach the train station on time!

And that brings us to the end of this beautiful day trip to Lake Como from Milan. It was a very long day, but we loved our time on Lake Como. Are you visiting Milan, but want to flee the busy city streets for day? Are the mountains, fresh air, and glistening waters of Lake Como calling your name? I get it. Because I felt the same! So I decided to plan out the perfect self-guided day trip from Milan to Lake Como .

From Milan , to Como (the lake’s namesake city), Bellagio, Varenna, and back, I packed in as much as I could into one day: charming villages and quaint cobblestone lanes; spectacular views , boat rides , beautiful gardens and villas; and of course, fresh pasta, gelato, and local wine .

Your Guide: How to Day Trip from Milan to Lake Como

While organized day trips are available to take you to Lake Como and back to Milan in a day, taking a self-guided day trip will be much more rewarding!

And it’s easy to do, too.

Which Towns to Visit

On a day trip to Lake Como from Milan, you’ll have time to explore a few of Lake Como’s villages. I recommend visiting:

• Bellagio ; and

Each place is special and beautiful in its own way. Plus, they’re close enough to each other that you can comfortably see them all in one day without having to rush.

Here’s how…

Your Roundtrip Route: Milan to Lake Como

Here’s the route you should take between Milan, Como, Bellagio, and Varenna:

• Train: Milano Centrale train station to Como San Giovanni station
• Ferry: Como to Bellagio
• Ferry: Bellagio to Varenna
• Train: Varenna-Esino train station to Milano Centrale train station

P.S. You can also embark on this route in reverse; Milan to Varenna and Como to Milan.

Why This Route?

Why this route? And why these towns?

Como (the city)

Well, Como is the biggest town on the lake. This ancient city is ridiculously charming and walkable, and there’s plenty to do and see – from churches to piazzas.

I thought that Como was more authentic than some of the other villages. It’s absolutely steeped in history, since at least the Bronze Age (which occurred between 3300 BC and 1200 BC). Amazing , right?

Unlike many other villages that partially shut in the low season, Como welcomes you year-round ! (Perfect if you’re visiting in the winter.)

Plus, taking the scenic ferry from Como to Bellagio means you have 45 minutes to savor the incredibly picturesque backdrop of tiny, colorful villages and soaring mountains!

Bellagio & Varenna

Bellagio and Varenna are also non-negotiable stops.

They’re both endlessly enchanting, with gardens, famous villas, stunning shores, wine bars, lakefront restaurants, souvenir shops, quaint promenades, and more.

If you leave Milan first thing in the morning, follow this route, and catch the last train back to Milan – you will have plenty of time to experience all three towns.

Alternative Day Trip Routes

Keep in mind, you can also take the train to/from Varenna-Esino train station, skipping Como completely . (I wouldn’t recommend this, but it’s an option!)

In that case, you could simply spend the day in Varenna on your own, if you’re looking for something more chill.

Another option would be to could embark on this Villa Balbianello and Flavors of Lake Como Walking and Boating Full-Day Tour (which leaves from Varenna).

Or, you could complete the “Golden Triangle” by taking the ferry from Varenna, to the nearby villages of Bellagio and Menaggio, and back again.

How to Purchase Train & Ferry Tickets

Train tickets.

For the route I recommend, you’ll need to purchase two sets of one-way train tickets for your day trip to Lake Como from Milan.

• Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni ; direct trip, about 40 minutes.
• Varenna-Esino to Milano Centrale ; direct trip, about 65 minutes.

You should purchase your tickets online from TrenItalia . You can simply keep your tickets on your smartphone; no need to print them out. I recommend purchasing your tickets a few days ahead of your trip, just in case!

If you can, take an early train to Como (around 7 AM), and one of the last trains back from Varenna to Milan (around 8-9 PM). If you do that, you can easily spend three or more hours in each town!

For both one-way train tickets combined, you can expect to pay as little as €12 per person (for second class).

However, if navigating the trains by yourself seems like too much stress, you can simply book this Guided Lake Como Day Trip from Milan . I didn’t personally go on this tour, but it has great reviews!

Ferry Tickets

You’ll also need to purchase two sets of one-way ferry tickets .

• Fast boat from Como to Bellagio ; 45 minutes. (Make sure NOT to purchase slow boat tickets.)
• Bellagio to Varenna ; 15 minutes.

You can purchase ferry tickets online, or in person at the ferry terminals.

If you book tickets online, you obviously don’t have to waste precious time standing in line! Either way, make sure to check the ferry  time tables before you leave for Lake Como, so you have a plan!

Quick Ferry Tips

• You can check timetables and fares, and purchase tickets, from the official website .
• Make sure to purchase the fast boat/hydrofoil from Como to Bellagio (45 minutes). The slow boat takes hours!
• If you choose to purchase your tickets in person, buy them as soon as possible so you don’t miss out (high season is busy!) Once you arrive in Como, head straight for the waterfront and buy your ticket to Bellagio. As soon as you step off the ferry in Bellagio, purchase your ticket to Varenna.
• Sometimes, the weather, waves, and other factors, make the ferries run less, skip certain piers, or not run at all.
• If navigating the ferries seems too complicated, simply book a guided Lake Como tour, like this Lake Como Day Trip from Milan .

What to Do During a Day Trip to Lake Como from Milan

Now that we’re all set with the route and tickets, let’s talk about Como, Bellagio, and Varenna , and what to do there!

1. Explore Como’s History-Rich Streets

Como is the largest of the three towns you’ll visit during your day trip. There’s plenty to do here, and no time to waste!

While in Como, spend a few hours roaming the quaint streets, browsing the many souvenir and wine shops, strolling along the lakeside promenade, and possibly taking a dip if it’s warm.

Make sure to stop by the beautiful Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta , the Piazza Alessandro Volta (Como’s loveliest square) and the medieval city gate, Porta Torre . If you want to learn about the history, consider taking a 1-hour guided walking tour .

Then, pop into Visini or Osteria del Gallo for a classic Italian lunch and some wine; whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong! Or, if you’re feeling fancy, book a table in advance at the one-Michelin-starred I Tigli in Theoria .

If you have time, you can also take the 7-minute funicular up to the peaceful town of Brunate , for incredible panoramic views over all of Lake Como and the chance to see another adorable town.

2. Stroll Around Beautiful Bellagio

Tall mountains, cypress trees, grand villas, and adorable cafés make up the lakeside town of Bellagio; and it goes without saying, but Bellagio is absolutely stunning.

While in Bellagio, roam the streets and pay attention to the details : the pretty pink flowers, the old cobblestones, beautiful iron lanterns, bright-colored shutters, and sweet little balconies. Honestly, if all you do in Bellagio is look around, it’s enough to keep you entertained for hours… This village is just so splendid .

Next, visit a wine shop to learn and taste some local wines . I really enjoyed my tastings at Enoteca La Principessa !

At 3:30 PM, you can join a guided tour of the famous Villa Serbelloni ‘s amazing 50-acre park and gardens. The views are unreal!

If you feel like taking to the water, then consider renting a kayak to explore the Lago di Como on your own!

Lastly, don’t forget to savor some fruity gelato, lakeside, before catching the ferry to Varenna!

3. Savor the Splendor of Varenna

Varenna absolutely stole my heart. While Bellagio seems to be everyone’s favorite town on Lake Como, I have to disagree! When your ferry approaches Varenna, you’ll know why I feel this way; in that moment, you’ll believe that you’ve never seen anything so unbelievably picturesque in your life.

In Varenna, make sure to visit the botanical gardens at the eclectic waterfront villa, Villa Monastero . (It closes around 8 PM in the summer, so you should have plenty of time!)

Savor an amazing dinner at Al Prato – or choose somewhere along the lakefront, and just enjoy the views.

Then, walk up and down the steep cobblestone alleyways and simply explore.

Before you leave, make sure to watch the sun dip behind the mountains as the sky turns pink. There’s no better way to wrap up your day trip to Lake Como – especially with a glass of wine in hand!

Should You Stay Overnight in Varenna?

Phew! Now that you know just how much there is to do on Lake Como, you might be thinking: “Should I stay overnight?” And I don’t blame you!

At the end of your day trip route, why not spend the night in Varenna? Maybe soak up a whole extra day on Lake Como?

If you have the time, then, YES! Of course , you should stay overnight .

If I were you, I’d choose one of these options in Varenna!

• Bed & Breakfast il Bolentino ($)
• Villa Varenna ($$)
• Hotel Olivedo ($$)
• Hotel Royal Victoria ($$$)

Whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong. The main thing to keep in mind is that ALL decent accommodation in Lake Como sells out far in advance (particularly between April and September). So if you do want to spend a night in Lake Como, book it now ! This is my favorite website for booking affordable accommodation in Italy. Typically, free cancellation is available, so you can book now with confidence!

Yes, Lake Como is absolutely worth a day trip from Milan! This lake – and the charming, centuries-old villages that surround it – are absolutely stunning. From boat rides, strolls along quaint cobblestone alleyways, and tasting delicious local wine, to exploring luxurious villas, swimming, hiking, and kayaking, there are endless fun things to do in Lake Como! You need at least one day in Lake Como, so you can easily just take a day trip from Milan. You can choose to go on your own, or go on this top-rated guided tour . With one day, you’ll have time to see up to three towns (such as Como, Bellagio, and Varenna) if you take the direct train from Milan and then make use of the Lake’s extensive ferry system. If you have even more time available, you should stay longer in Lake Como. Anywhere between 2-5 days would be ideal, so that you have time to explore a few villages in depth, do some water activities, go hiking, stroll through some immaculate gardens and luxurious villas, and take in all of the incredible scenes on Lake Como.

You should plan for your day trip to Lake Como from Milan to take up an entire day. If you take this popular guided tour , you can expect it to last about 9 hours. What to Pack

Depending on the season you visit will depend on the layers you need, summer is very warm but the winter is incredibly cold. Italy is very stylish and Italians famously dress well, so avoid white sneakers where possible and opt for a smart shoe or boot. Always have a beautiful coat in winter, it will hide anything less stylish you may be wearing as you explore in the colder months.

Here are a few top tips of what to wear:

• Wool coat: During the colder months a beautiful wool coat is essential. You will fit in with the locals with this one .

Warning – if you do this day trip during peak season, you can expect massive queues and crowds everywhere. I went to Como on Easter Sunday, and ended up queueing for over an hour to buy my ferry ticket. Once I got to Bellagio, I joined the throngs of tourists trudging round the town, and ended up getting a slice of pizza from a takeaway shop for my lunch because I couldn’t find a restaurant that didn’t have a minimum 20 minute wait for a table. Go off-peak, or be prepared for a hellish experience that doesn’t show what is actually a very beautiful part of the world in its best light.

Hmmm, we’re wondering if that’s because it was Easter… We did this day trip during peak season (in late June), and we had no long queues, no issues with crowds, and no problems finding great restaurants to eat at.

We haven’t visited Como in November. However, our assumption would be that, providing you can find accommodation, you will have an incredible time. Lake Como is absolutely beautiful, and personally, we’d jump at the chance to visit in the off season to enjoy less crowds!

I’m not sure about a boat tour. Does that allow you to actually get off the boat and check out the towns? The ferry option, in my opinion, was perfect and if I had to do a day tour again, I wouldn’t do it any differently. I would say it’s not feasible to try to see more than Como, Bellagio, and Varenna in a day because you won’t have enough time to enjoy each place.

It will depend on the train tickets you purchase, and what times are available on your dates. So here’s what we can tell you. We recommend getting on one of the earliest trains to Como, hopefully arriving by 10 or 11 am. Then we would recommend spending two or three hours in each town, and taking one of the last trains back to Milan.

Hi Maddy, Me and my boyfriend are going do Lake Como in late June and we’re going to do the same thing that you did! We are going to catch one of the first trains in Milan to Como and be back in Milan in one of the last ones from Varenna. So we wanted to know how many hours we should spend in each place and if it’s better to catch de ferry or the speed service?

Sounds like a great plan. If you can spend about three hours in each town, that would be perfect. When it comes to transportation, choose whatever available ferries fit into your schedule, while also getting you to the next place as quickly as possible. If that means taking the speed service, then do that.

When you’re searching for your ferry times on this website https://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/c_orari.asp make sure that you check the box that says “include fast service” before clicking “search.” You should find ferry trips that are 42 minutes instead of 2 hours.

Hi Ayesha! Well, we won’t pretend we know what it’s like to travel with a three year old… But we can’t see why it wouldn’t be possible! But if you think it’s too much hassle to go to all three places, you could cut out Bellagio and go straight to Varenna. (However, we highly recommend sticking to this guide if possible. You would regret missing Bellagio.)

First of all ,thank you for such a wonderful article. I am interested in following your guide but i only have 9 hours to do COMO , bellgaio and Varenna trip.

What are your thoughts doing the three places the other way round eg Milan to Varenna, Varenna to Bellagio by ferry. Bellagio to Como by ferry. Como to Milan by train. Do you see any disadvantages this way round?

I just came back from Italy and I did that exactly. I went to Varenna first then Bellagio to Como. Great view either way!

What about 1 day to como in winter i am planning in December before New year u think still possible?

We visited during summer, so we can’t be sure, however it’s our understanding that many places shut down for the winter months. Check the ferry and train schedules to see if it’s possible, then see if the places you want to visit (restaurants, etc.) are open in winter.

Read your post and immediately was interested in following your guide to Lake Como. Then, I read the posts and made up my mind to do it. I’m traveling this coming July. I’m traveling with a special needs kids who only eats hamburgers and fries. Did you happen to see any burger joints? Hate to carry his food around, but obviously do if I have to. Thank you so much.

Wouldn’t it be too cold to roam Lake Como on Feb 2018? I’m thinking that the wind will be too cold to enjoy the lake? Thanks

Just one question: what’s the ferry port name from Como? When I perform the search on that website you linked , from “Como” to “Bellagio” it finds no routes. From Bellagio to Varenna I got to see the time table, but nothing comes up from Como.

Love your comprehensive day trip! I think I will be following your itinerary later this month for my day trip from Milan. I’m curious, what day of the week did you visit? I have read that a lot of shops close rather early (or are closed completely) on sundays, and that many shops don’t open until midday on Mondays. Did you find this to be true? My two options for a day trip are a Sunday and Monday, so I want to choose the best day for shops and restaurants to be open. Thanks!

There is no 'booking' of these ferries. You can buy a ticket in advance, but it does not give you the right to board your chosen ferry if it is too crowded, and the ticket is valid for any ferry on the calendar date for which it is issued.

Local people with season tickets, who use the ferries regularly for work etc., can book the fast ferries and only the fast ferries, and receive priority entry on board. But occasional users such as tourists cannot book.

So if I understand buying online will save your time in line to buy ticket from the counter if it’s crowded.

I would not book in advance. You just don't know how the weather is on your choosen day. And if it is a heavy rain and/or a strong wind this trip doesn't make sence.

So go to the counter early, maybe 10 - 15 minutes, and stay a few minutes in line.

Venice's fee frenzy catches on: Lake Como eyes tourist tax

B ehind us is a historic weekend in Venice - the last one before the introduction of a fee for day-trippers. Although the first day of the new rules is yet to come, another Italian destination, inspired by Venice's move, is considering implementing a similar fee for day visitors.

Last Sunday saw as many as 60,000 tourists flocking to Venice, seizing the last chance to explore the historic center free of charge. The fee, which is about to be introduced, will require those visiting just for a few hours, without staying overnight, to pay 5 euros. The new policy will initially apply to 29 selected dates between April 25 and July 14, primarily weekends.

Lake Como as a paid attraction?

Venice's fees are a groundbreaking approach, and it's clear that other popular tourist destinations are considering adopting similar strategies.

Alessandro Rapinese, the mayor of Como by the famous lake of the same name, is seriously contemplating fees for day visitors.

Lake Como, a tourist magnet in Northern Italy, is home to enchanting Varenna with its quaint streets and tranquil ambiance, the renowned Bellagio, and Villa del Balbianello, a filming site for movies like "Star Wars" and a "Bond" film.

As it becomes increasingly challenging to find a peaceful spot by Como, both residents and tourists are affected. Como, the third-largest lake in Italy, draws up to 1.4 million tourists annually.

This overwhelming number prompts Mayor Rapinese to consider imposing fees. He voiced his frustration over the situation at Lake Como, stating, "Being a mayor is challenging when you have to contend with the impacts of tourism."

"We are already discussing fees. Revolutions begin with decisive action, and we are prepared for this journey," he said in an interview with The Times.

The mayor hasn't provided specific details yet. If he decides on a fee structure similar to Venice's, it would target one-day visitors (excluding those who have booked overnight accommodation) and be enforced only on exceptionally busy days, like weekends and holidays.

Lake Como - day-trippers causing chaos

Post-pandemic, the influx of Sunday tourists to Lake Como has become unmanageable, according to Severino Beri, president of the hoteliers' association in the city of Lecco by Lake Como.

In recent weeks, we have seen long lines for lake ferries and crowds pushing onto train tracks at the Como station.

"Day-trippers do not contribute to profits," Beri criticized. Indeed, they mainly cause considerable disruption and leave behind heaps of garbage . He further noted that the overcrowding might deter longer-staying hotel guests, who provide locals with significant income and employment opportunities.

The renowned Villa del Balbianello responded to "excessive tourism," which substantially affects Lake Como, by reducing its daily maximum visitors from 2,000 to 1,200 last year. The FAI (Italian Fund for Environmental Protection) manages the estate and labeled the move as "drastic" but essential.
