Consider these luxury cruise lines for your next trip.

Amanda Teague

Setting sail on a luxury cruise is a dreamy escape that promises comfort, indulgence, and adventure. If you are thinking about heading out to sea, choosing the right cruise line can make all of the difference. The benefits of taking a luxury cruise

The best luxury cruise lines, book a trip with one of the best luxury cruise lines today.

The difference between a luxury cruise and a regular cruise extends beyond varying price points. A regular cruise often comes with all of the standard amenities and service levels, while a luxury cruise takes the experience a step further by offering an unparalleled level of opulence and refinement. Luxury cruises often include gourmet dining experiences, unique amenities, and VIP privileges, including priority embarkation and access to exclusive events.

Additionally, luxury cruises tend to focus on an adult market, with smaller, more intimate ships that often come with spacious and elegant suites or staterooms for guests. The smaller size of these vessels allows them to visit unique places that larger commercial ships cannot.

As travelers, we are accustomed to meticulously planning what we can and cannot bring in our carry-on luggage, ensuring compliance with airline regulations and security protocols. However, amidst the focus on carry-on restrictions, it’s easy to overlook the limitations imposed on checked baggage. Surprisingly, there is a long list of TSA prohibited items that are strictly banned from being stowed away in the checked compartment of a plane. So, before you zip up your suitcase and bid farewell to your checked bag, let’s explore what items must remain out of sight during your journey.

What can you take on a plane? TSA prohibited items When it comes to packing for a flight, we are often well-versed in the restrictions placed on carry-on items, particularly the infamous 3-1-1 liquid rule. Yet, as we organize our carry-ons, it is crucial not to ignore the contents of our checked baggage. While it may seem like a convenient place to store bulkier or less essential items, several objects should never be put in your checked baggage. From flammable materials to certain liquids to popular foods, the restrictions are broad and varied. These are just a few of TSA prohibited items to consider before packing your suitcase. 1. Wrapped presents Wrapped presents always run the risk of being flagged by security. These wrapped gifts can trigger suspicion or require additional screening, leading to delays and potential damage to your wrapped items. Additionally, if security officials cannot identify the contents of a wrapped gift, they may need to unwrap it entirely. 2. An abundance of cash Packing an abundance of cash in your checked baggage is ill-advised for several reasons, particularly concerning security and potential legal complications. While no specific TSA regulations limit the amount of cash you can carry domestically, travelers entering the U.S. must declare amounts exceeding $10,000 to customs officials. However, regardless of the amount, carrying a significant sum of cash can attract attention from TSA agents, who have the authority to question you about the source and purpose of the money.

A vacation or a trip away is about relaxing, or rather taking a break from the bustle and monotony of daily life. There are some amazing luxury hotel chains to visit, sure. Still, the best trips unburden you by including the preparation of your meals and drinks, offering an abundance of activities with minimal planning, and more. The less you have to do, the better. If you've never been on an all-inclusive trip before, that's precisely the point. Everything is included and prepared for you, and there's really no need to pay for much else -- often, your food and drinks are covered. You can tip, buy some souvenirs, and maybe try out a few snacks or meals outside of what's available, but again, you don't have to fret about it if you don't want to. Surprisingly, there are a lot of all-inclusive resorts and destinations if you know where to look. Pack your bags, don't forget your suntan lotion, and let's explore. Amid the fallout from the Boeing 737 MAX crisis, there is a looming possibility of airline tickets becoming more expensive. Incidents like the door of an Alaskan Airlines 737 MAX detaching mid-flight have prompted Boeing to slow down the production of this aircraft.

With airlines facing potential delays in receiving their ordered Boeing planes and some carriers like United even halting orders for certain models altogether, the industry braces for a reduction in available aircraft. These delays, compounded by intensive federal investigations into Boeing’s manufacturing processes, may limit the number of planes available to American carriers. Consequently, this reduction in aircraft availability poses a risk of driving up airline prices for travelers.

What to Look For in a Luxury Cruise Line

Choosing a luxury cruise line is like selecting a fine wine—it’s all about personal taste, the nuances of quality, and the promise of an exceptional experience. When venturing into the world of luxury cruising, you should consider several key aspects to ensure your journey is as enriching and fulfilling as possible.

Here’s what to look for when selecting a luxury cruise line:

1. Destinations and Itineraries

The allure of any cruise lies in the destinations it visits and the experiences it offers. Look for a cruise line with itineraries that take you to your desired destinations and provide opportunities for deep exploration.

Luxury cruise ships are smaller than the behemoths of mainstream cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line.

Small ships provide a more intimate onboard experience but also allow you to travel to less visited destinations. They can access smaller ports of call, taking you on a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Whether you’re looking for remote polar expeditions, serene river cruises, journeys to iconic cities, or the untouched Galapagos, the right cruise line should offer a compelling blend of destinations that cater to your sense of adventure and cultural curiosity.

2. Ship Size and Guest Capacity

The size of the ship and its guest capacity are pivotal factors in defining the quality and intimacy of your vacation experience. Unlike the massive vessels of mainstream cruise lines, luxury cruises typically favor smaller, intimate, and more elegant ships.

Smaller cruise ships are committed to delivering more personalized service where guests know you by name.

You’re not just a face in the crowd on a smaller ship. You’re part of a select group of travelers, allowing exquisite service and attention.

The reduced guest capacity ensures that each passenger receives more care and consideration. Crew members know you by name and tailor your experience based on your preferences and tastes. This high level of personalized attention is one of the hallmarks of luxury cruising, transforming your journey into a truly bespoke experience.

Look for cruise ships with a small guest-to-staff ratio.

The guest-to-staff ratio is a crucial indicator of the level of service you can expect. Lower ratios mean there’s more staff available per passenger, ensuring that your needs and requests are met with swift, attentive service. It’s not about having more people to cater to your needs; it’s about crafting an environment where service excellence is the norm, making your cruise feel like a journey tailored just for you.

Moreover, the intimate scale of these ships offers practical benefits, too. Smaller vessels have the agility to navigate to less accessible, more secluded ports, opening up a world of exclusive destinations that larger ships can’t reach.

This means you can explore hidden gems around the globe, from the narrow waterways of quaint European towns to secluded islands in the heart of the Pacific, without the crowds that larger ships bring.

3. Onboard Amenities and Accommodations

Onboard amenities and accommodations are vital to ensure your journey is comfortable, elegant, and a luxurious personal indulgence. Luxury cruises distinguish themselves through their exceptional attention to detail in every aspect of your experience. From the suites to the public spaces, everything is meticulously designed to ensure the best experience.

The accommodations on a luxury cruise are more than just a place to rest your head. They are private sanctuaries that blend spacious elegance with high-end amenities.

Suites are often generously sized and offer plush, comfortable bedding. Your cabin comes with modern conveniences and luxury touches such as fine linens, premium toiletries, and, usually, personal butler service. Most staterooms feature private balconies, allowing you an uninterrupted view of the ocean’s expanse or the changing landscapes of your journey.

It’s a serene spot to enjoy morning coffee or evening cocktails in privacy.

Beyond the suites, the ship itself is a haven of refined leisure and activity. Luxury cruise lines invest heavily in creating an ambiance that caters to their guests’ every whim and preference.

Look for cruise lines offering a variety of dining venues and gourmet cuisine prepared by acclaimed chefs.

It’s important to find time for self-care on your luxury getaway. Pay careful attention to the spa and wellness centers for relaxation and rejuvenation, as well as the fitness centers and cruise lines offering group fitness classes.

Most luxury ships feature enriching onboard amenities such as libraries, boutiques, pools, and exclusive lounges. Enrichment programs and entertainment tailored to sophisticated tastes—from lectures and workshops to performances and social events—ensure that your time at sea is as rewarding as your time exploring ashore.

4. Culinary Excellence

Culinary experiences are a highlight of any cruise vacation. But luxury cruise lines take dining to a new level.

A luxury cruise distinguishes itself with its culinary excellence, transforming dining into an adventure as compelling as the ports of call.

Look for cruise lines with diverse menus and excellent culinary reviews. Many cruise lines have partnerships with world-renowned chefs, and collaborations with culinary artists signal a commitment to dining excellence.

Luxury cruise lines are smaller, so you won’t find as diverse a menu as larger cruise ships. However, you should see some diverse options in the dining room menus.

The foundation of any exceptional dining experience is the quality of the ingredients.

Luxury cruises prioritize using fresh, high-quality ingredients, often sourced from local markets at port destinations. This commitment to freshness supports local communities and enhances the culinary experience. It allows you to taste the authenticity and richness of each destination’s flavors.

Cruise lines like Viking Cruises create menus around the destinations they visit. It provides immersion beyond shore excursions and educational lectures.

Those seeking an even more elevated dining experience look for luxury cruises offering specialty dining options and exclusive culinary events. You might want to partake in wine-pairing dinners, chef’s table experiences, or cooking demonstrations.

These exclusive experiences often require reservations and sometimes an additional fee, but they offer an unparalleled opportunity to indulge in culinary excellence.

All can enjoy a truly luxurious dining experience, regardless of dietary restrictions or preferences. Look for cruise lines that excel in accommodating a wide range of dietary needs, from gluten-free to vegan, without compromising flavor or creativity.

5. Inclusive Pricing and Value

One of my favorite parts of luxury cruise lines is the all-inclusive pricing. However, the concept of inclusivity varies significantly between cruise lines.

Here’s what you should look for in cruise fare, inclusive pricing, and value to ensure your luxury voyage is opulent and economically savvy.

All-inclusive pricing on luxury cruises means that from the moment you step aboard, your vacation essentials are covered. This typically includes your accommodations, dining venues, beverages (including a selection of fine wines, premium spirits, and other drinks), gratuities, WiFi, and shore excursions.

The beauty of this model is its simplicity. You get to immerse yourself fully in the luxury experience without worrying about accumulating extra costs.

Knowing all your expenses upfront allows you to better budget for your luxury cruise.

While “all-inclusive” can be enticing, savvy cruisers know that the devil is in the details. Discovering precisely what each cruise line includes in their fare is crucial.

Some luxury lines offer airfare, hotel stays before embarkation, and private car transfers to and from the ship. Others may include specialty dining, 24/7 room service, and access to exclusive lounges and areas on the ship.

Despite labeling their fares as “all-inclusive,” some experiences and services may carry an additional charge. Expect to pay extra for premium wine and spirits beyond the standard selection, spa services, unique shore excursions, or exclusive dining experiences.

Understanding these distinctions is critical to assessing the true value of your luxury cruise fare.

When considering the price of a luxury cruise, it’s essential to calculate the overall value rather than just looking at the upfront cost. Compare what’s included in the fare and what costs extra. Then, compare the cruise fare across different cruise lines.

Don’t let a higher fare detour you.

Many luxury cruise lines include airfare, high-end excursions, and more personalized service. When you break down the inclusions, a higher cruise fare can be a better value than a seemingly cheaper option that nickels and dimes you for every extra.

Finally, seek out transparent cruise lines about their pricing and what’s included.

Trustworthy lines will clearly outline what’s covered in the fare and any potential additional costs. This transparency allows you to budget effectively and avoid unpleasant surprises, ensuring your luxury cruise remains a blissfully worry-free experience.

Packing Essentials

When preparing for a cruise, it’s important to pack wisely to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here are some essential items to consider bringing:

  • Sunscreen : Protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun.
  • Swimsuit : Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit for relaxing by the pool or enjoying water activities.

Remember, a Sea Savant always comes prepared with the right essentials for a memorable cruise experience!

So make sure to pack smart and have a fantastic time on your cruise!

Choosing the Right Cabin

When selecting a cabin for your cruise, there are several factors to consider. Location is key, as you may prefer a cabin closer to the amenities or with a view of the ocean. Size is also important, especially if you are traveling with a family or need extra space. Additionally, cabin type can vary from inside cabins with no windows to luxurious suites with balconies. It’s also worth noting that some cruise lines offer special perks such as priority boarding or access to exclusive areas. Lastly, don’t forget to check if your chosen cabin includes a drink package for unlimited beverages throughout your cruise .

Making the Most of Shore Excursions

When it comes to shore excursions, there are plenty of options to choose from. Whether you’re interested in exploring historical landmarks, enjoying outdoor adventures, or simply relaxing on a beautiful beach, there’s something for everyone. One popular option for cruise vacations for young adults is the adrenaline-pumping zip-lining experience . Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and camera to capture these unforgettable moments. Make the most of your shore excursions by planning ahead and booking in advance to secure your spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to go on a caribbean cruise.

The best time to go on a Caribbean cruise is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to April. This is when the weather is warm and there is less chance of rain or hurricanes.

Are gratuities included in the cruise fare?

Gratuities are not typically included in the cruise fare. Most cruise lines charge a daily gratuity fee, which is added to your onboard account. This fee is distributed among the crew members who provide services during your cruise.

Do I need a passport for a cruise?

It depends on the itinerary of your cruise. If your cruise departs from and returns to the same U.S. port, a passport is not required for U.S. citizens. However, it is highly recommended to have a valid passport for all cruises, as it is the best form of identification when traveling internationally.

Can I bring my own alcohol on a cruise ship?

Most cruise lines have restrictions on bringing your own alcohol on board. It is best to check the specific policies of the cruise line you are sailing with. Some cruise lines allow limited quantities of wine or champagne to be brought on board, while others do not allow any outside alcohol.

What is the dress code for dinner on a cruise ship?

The dress code for dinner on a cruise ship varies depending on the cruise line and the type of dining venue. Most cruise lines have formal, semi-formal, and casual nights. On formal nights, passengers are typically expected to dress up in elegant attire, such as a suit or cocktail dress. On casual nights, resort casual attire is usually acceptable.

Are there laundry facilities on cruise ships?

Most cruise ships have self-service laundry facilities available for passengers to use. These facilities usually have washers, dryers, and ironing boards. Some ships also offer laundry and dry cleaning services for an additional fee.

Our Ritz-Carlton cruise has been cancelled - so now we're looking for a replacement.  We want to sail this winter, 7-10 days in the Caribbean.

I have no idea where to start or what differentiates one luxury line from another.

Any thoughts?

What  are you looking for in a luxury line ?

All inclusive , semi inclusive. all suites  more formal more casual?

Crystal ( in a Penthouse or higher suite for more space, and better (butler)service) .  On board entertainment and enrichment are extensive.

or Seabourn ( smaller, but bigger base suites) Downside to the latter is the main dining room is typically closed on port intensive cruises.  No butler but good room stewardesses.  We enjoyed our 14 day holiday easterb Caribbean cruise pre-Covid.

I'd say - great food, great service, no kids, no crowds.  We are in our late 40's and looking for a luxurious and relaxing atmosphere!

There are generally some kids ( mostly kids of the affluent) as part of extended families on all luxury lines that sail to the Caribbean over holidays, and they generally can  make more noise.  However, with Covid and the requirement that all pax be vaccinated, I believe  they would have to be at least 12 now ( am not sure if any line is making exceptions for vaccine ineligible pax who are kids).  Viking even without Covid required  everyone be over 18, so that would eliminate teenagers, some of  whom can be annoying, but they are a "premium" and not a luxury line ( smaller cabins, and tipping is expected, but it is not a "party" line -- there is a lot of focus on education and enrichment)

But if you sail right at Xmas and New Years, there will likely  be more people than before and after , ( not "crowds" or big lines for food but more noise) including some louder adult groups with or without extended families.

If you can sail before or after the holidays, any of the four English language luxury lines ( Silver Sea, Regent, Crystal, and Seabourn) should have great food and service and no crowds, few kida, especially with Covid.  All these lines are "all inclusive" meaning formal tipping is "neither required nor expected", so you do not sign chits.

SS has dressed up  "butlers" for each room, and some see it as a little stuffier on dress codes, and catering to an older crowd ( and more Brits pre-Covid), whereas Regent is less so.  But there is a lot of overlap. Couples in their 40's and 50's are "younger" than most on board but are typically well-catered to everywhere.  If you want new friends *your age* they will be harder to find on luxury cruises, but if you mostly just want time for each other, then no problem.  If you want "free" caviar, anytime, go with Seabourn 🙂

I am not loyal to any line so I mix and match and compare and contrast a lot .  My least favorite food and service was on Regent, though overall it was still very good, and my most favorite was on Crystal, but things can vary cruise to cruise and dependening on itinerary. With Covid  -- who knows what will happen in two months.

If I were back in my 40's, with my husband, for a first winter luxury Caribbean cruise to eat and relax, I would book a Penthouse with Veranda on Crystal ( comes with a butler but no tux) , but NOT over Christmas.  Second choice Seabourn.  Browse around the websites and the forums on CC.  Note that NO ONE looks like the handsome GQ and pretty models in the pictures on any of the luxury lines, except some  entertainers 🙂

My RC is also cancelled for late March  2022

I 'll go for Crystal or Silversea , not on Seabourn - since the HAL influences -  anymore and as a single Regent is too expensive also I very rarely  do organised excursions.

Vistaman, a little on, and a little off topic:

do you have any experiences with the French small luxury line Ponant ( which also serves English speakers) you could comment on for either the OP (American couple), in general, or as a solo ( my curiosity)?  I know there are Ponant reviews but as we both liked  the luxury Hapag Lloyd product before they banned foreigners due to Covid, I trust your judgment. 🙂

Of course as a Belgian, you speak French, but could you tell if an American couple would be treated well?  Were lectures in both French and English?  Was the food really French quality , or just heated up frozen rubbery lobster with a pretty presentation ?

mrs catlover54,

i am said to be an extremely difficult guy concerning the F &B operations - sorry for boasting but i was in very nice places - hotels and restaurants since a very young age.

Sometimes seeing too many details , it seems.

Last year I wrote a review in CC concerning Le Champlain  - one week to Croatia , because there was nothing else - i was supposed to go back one week Greek isles on the same ship but i did cancel. (free covid related policy )

Friendliness  and free drinks are not synonym for luxury.

The quality of cold cuts and cheeses was rather poor - supermarket level.  And it was a cheese plate 3 pieces no choice. Several times there was service by friendly waiters wearing a not so clean jacket  and a waiter clearly not shaven ...

A lot of details were missing  - fresh salads ???

There are nice items : an apero hour with items like something from Croatia , spanish ham , but lacks finesse - on a taster with caviar smoked halibut ?? salmon yes !

I remember on the special wine diner there was a carpaccio of scallops with a dressing - it was nearly pure lemon and lime juice completely  destroying the taste of the very good Pouilly Fumé poared aside

I missed some very French classics like coq au vin ,  one lunch there was a parmentier with duck : chopped duck meat pieces covered with mashed potatoes  -   vegetables? so heavy I had stomach problems

Ok in French households a potato is considered as a vegetable ... steak with green beans OR potatoes not the 2 like in Belgium

there were i think 4 people of non French speaking countries  - i think they were happy - maybe caused by the free Charles Heidsieck

bar service was very ok   -   and the new generation Ponant ships are beautifully designed

however : this product is not a luxury product despite the display of very expensive wines ( Ch Latour is owned by the owner of Ponant ) available  at verydecent prices  and Hermes  amenities

and despite Ponant is calling in  Monaco chef Alain Ducasse company as consulting

for me a week was enough  -  the gastronomy cannot match Hapag Lloyd , Crystal and even SB after Hal influences - was not on Silversea for 5 years

I think nearly everybody was speaking decent English of course with an accent - I used to have it also during my first cruises late 80s ( Dutch is my first language ) - 2waiters in the bar frm Philippies had sometimes trouble with the French ordering and speaking very fast  😁

My TA was on Le LYrial for Croatia and however he is not so strict he had to confirm a lot of my comments. Ponant should upgrade the F&B aspect !

I cannot dwell on details concerning Hapag  as a reconcialition is under construction but a reply by the services of the European Commission  ( that is the government of the European Union ) was pleasant for me  - but I am an European  citizen  -    on the other side i am hoping to go to the Us very soon !

I like Champagne : i like to point it   : Hapag is Cristal , Crystal is Dom P and Ponant is a regular brand however not Roederer or Bollinger  😂

Thanks

I sail solo so don't have a "couple's experience" to provide. But I have been sailing with Silversea since 2017---after years and years on Mass market lines (most with Celebrity).

Anyway, you asked for a recommendation, I highly recommend Silversea 🙂 . There are several suite levels--they call all the cabins suites. The basic balcony is what I normally book but in my opinion, it is far from basic......quite large with a walk in closet. I am spoiled now.

They also have the MUCH LARGER suites.....like I said, take a look at SS.

I have sailed with them 5 times and have 5 more on the books 🙂 .....I went to Greece in July and Alaska last month----It FELT SO GREAT to be back on board!!!!!!!!! 👍

Because of what is happening in the world, my first question would be vaccination requirements.

I think you will find many cruises to/in the Caribbean this winter.

My choice would be RSSC.  We have sailed with them several times and have 2 scheduled next year.  They are 100% vaccinated requirements, usually few if any children, probably none with the vaccination requirement.

Next, I would look at the ports and sea days of the various cruises for the cruise lines mentioned above and see what I would like to see.

Hi, are those the initials for Regent?

Silversea requires all pax to be vaccinated as well and also, very few kids..

Yes, RSS Regent Seven Seas

I think SS and Seabourn could be a good fit, especially SS which is all inclusive and includes a steward and butler in every stateroom.  The ships are smaller, quiet and very relaxing.  Crystal would be the next tier down, ships are somewhat larger, there’s more entertainment, food is just okay.  I really disliked the photographers trying to drum up business.   All  three are all  inclusive onboard.  Avoid school holidays if you want some peace and quiet.  Have you ever considered just chartering a yacht?  If you really want a relaxing time that could be the way to go.

I think all the ones folks have mentioned will be quiet with few kids and good dining.  The luxury lines are very sedate, in my experience.  So if you are into to that, any will do IMO. I like all lines - mass, premium, and luxury, except the super small ships with sub 150 passengers. To me, they all have their pros and cons.  The company I am traveling with is more important and I tend to have a good time no matter what line.  My next cruise is with my mother in December. We are going on Crystal as she does not need or want the loud shows in mass lines, but she wants a casino, lol.  This cruise is more about us just spending quality time together as this will be her first “real” vacation post my father’s passing, which occurred right before the pandemic.

I would consider Regent to be the most inclusive luxury line.  It includes gratuities, alcohol, airfare (Domestic if flying within North America from the US and Business if flying overseas from the US),  overnight hotel stay one night prior to boarding in Concierge suites and higher, transfers to the hotel and ship on embarkation and to airport on disembarkation, and excursions.  The ships are nice and spacious with a partition (curtain) dividing the living room from the bedroom.  Most suites have large walk-in closets with the exception of H suites on the newest ships (Explorer and Splendor).  Only the Navigator G & H suites do not have balconies.

Plus evening wear is considered to be Elegant Casual with the exception of occasional Optional Formal Night on longer cruises. No fee for speciality restaurants, one reservation per restaurant per cruise.  Plus you can add more reservations if available onboard.

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Whether you seek adventure, cultural immersion, or relaxation, an itinerary that aligns with your desires will ensure an enriching and unforgettable luxury cruise experience.

Service and Staff

The level of service provided by the staff on a luxury cruise can significantly impact your overall experience. Excellent service and attentive staff members ensure that your needs are met and that you feel pampered and well taken care of throughout your journey. Here are some factors to consider when evaluating the service and staff of a luxury cruise line:

Value for Money

When considering a luxury cruise, it is important to assess the value for money that each cruise line offers. Luxury cruising comes with a higher price tag, but it is essential to determine if the amenities, services, and overall experience justify the cost. Here are some factors to consider when evaluating the value for money:

Sometimes, luxury cruise lines offer early booking discounts, last-minute deals, or loyalty program benefits. Taking advantage of these promotions can help increase the value for money.
  • Service Quality: Consider the level of service and attention provided by the staff. Exceptional service can contribute to a higher perceived value, making you feel that you are receiving a premium experience and ultimately justifying the cost.
  • Itinerary and Destination: Assess the destinations visited and the overall itinerary. A well-curated itinerary that includes unique and exciting ports of call can increase the value of the cruise, as it provides opportunities for exploration and discovery.
  • Customer Reviews and Feedback: Read customer reviews and testimonials to get a sense of the value for money experienced by previous passengers. Their feedback can provide valuable insights into the overall experience and whether it aligns with the cost of the cruise.
  • Brand Reputation: Consider the reputation of the luxury cruise line in terms of delivering value for money. Research their history, awards, and recognition within the industry to gauge their commitment to exceptional service and guest satisfaction.

Ultimately, choosing a luxury cruise line that offers excellent value for money ensures that you have a rewarding and worthwhile experience.

Choosing the best luxury cruise line is a subjective decision that depends on your personal preferences and desires. By evaluating criteria such as onboard amenities, cabin accommodations, culinary experience, entertainment and activities, destinations and itineraries, service and staff, and value for money, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your needs.

Keep in mind that each luxury cruise line has its own unique offerings and strengths. Some may excel in onboard amenities and service, while others may focus on immersive itineraries and exceptional culinary experiences. It is essential to prioritize the criteria that matter most to you and select a cruise line that aligns with your interests and expectations.

Reading customer reviews, seeking recommendations, and consulting with travel professionals can also provide valuable insights into the cruise lines that consistently deliver exceptional experiences.

The cabins are larger

best luxury cruise lines reddit

Most mainstream ships feature a variety of cabin types — with the most basic and inexpensive lacking windows. Although the resulting darkness can help you catch up on some sleep, those rooms are often small and cramped, especially if you share them with others.

Cue luxury ships, where most rooms tend to be larger than the industry average. The most lavish cabins can be larger than many houses ashore. Some vessels, such as Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's Evrima , offer only suite accommodations . Others, like Seabourn Venture , feature balconies in every single cabin.

Add on extra touches like robes and slippers for onboard use, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets and concierge or butler service in some cabins, and you'll find yourself in the lap of luxury for the duration of your sailing.

The ships are smaller

best luxury cruise lines reddit

For the purposes of this article, we'll consider the following to be luxury lines , with some also offering expedition cruises , as noted below:

  • Ponant Cruises (including expedition sailings)
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
  • Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours (including expedition sailings)
  • Seabourn (including expedition sailings)
  • Silversea Cruises
  • Viking (including expedition sailings)

Vessels in those fleets carry fewer passengers than many mainstream megaships, the largest of which can see close to 7,000 cruisers at capacity (not including crew members). In order to fit that many people on board and provide them with enough activities, public areas and places to eat, the hardware is massive.

Most luxury ships carry anywhere from 200 to 500 passengers, with just a handful welcoming nearly 1,000 (but even those few are many times smaller than some of the largest vessels afloat). Not only does that mean a more intimate ambience and fewer queues to wait in, but smaller ships can also offer a larger range of ports on their itineraries (more about that below).

The food is superb

If you're a gourmand, luxury cruises are the way to go. Most are foodie havens where meals are otherworldly. Free caviar and Champagne are common, but it doesn't stop there.

On some vessels, including those in the Viking fleet, passengers can shop with the chef in port and watch as he prepares the spoils for dinner that evening. Other ships, such as Scenic Eclipse, offer mouthwatering chef's table experiences that take diners on a several-hour journey that captivates even the most picky of eaters.

Still others have partnerships with world-renowned chefs, such as Thomas Keller, who maintains outposts on Seabourn ships. This represents a terrific value for money; it allows cruisers easy access to famed chefs' dishes for free, while reservations at their affiliated land-based restaurants are generally hard to come by and could cost hundreds per meal.

The service is better

best luxury cruise lines reddit

Because luxury ships tend to have fewer passengers on board, they also usually have a better crew-to-passenger ratio. In fact, some even strive for a 1-to-1 ratio, which helps ensure that there's always someone available to help you with tidying your room, bringing you room service or helping you with shore excursion reservations.

Overall, service is above and beyond what you'd expect from the hospitality industry, and your needs are constantly anticipated, so you rarely have anything left to ask for.

Often, you can expect the demeanor of the crew on luxury ships to be friendly and efficient but not overbearing. It stands pleasantly between the fawning, doting nature of crews on mainstream North American ships and the almost icy, "don't speak unless spoken to" variety found on some more international lines.

You get more bang for your buck

best luxury cruise lines reddit

The price tag is another solid indicator that you're booking a luxury voyage. It's not uncommon for fares to run into the thousands per night for each person, depending on the ship and itinerary. However, before you succumb to sticker shock, it's important to realize that the mantra of "you get what you pay for" applies here.

Luxury sailings include just about anything you could want while you sail. Amenities like alcoholic beverages and soda, Wi-Fi and gratuities are rolled into most luxury carriers' costs — along with butler and concierge services, flights, airport transfers and even shore excursions on some ships.

Apart from taxes and fees, you'll have a pretty good idea of what your bottom line is right off the bat. It can seem like a lot at first, but often it's a better value. That's because most larger players — such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line — charge extra for all of those add-ons unless you purchase some of the highest-level suites or book under a promotion like Norwegian's Free at Sea .

The ports are less touristy

best luxury cruise lines reddit

Any vessel can go to the places where the largest can fit, but only the smallest can navigate to some of the world's most remote regions.

If you relish the idea of squeezing into tiny inlets where you can view Alaska glaciers up close, visiting pristine beaches in Caribbean destinations like Martinique or Anguilla or checking out other hard-to-access ports around the globe, a smaller ship is the way to go. And smaller ships go hand in hand with luxury cruising.

It also explains, in part, why luxury cruise lines have been so quick to hop on the growing expedition cruise trend. It used to be that active travelers had to sacrifice swanky onboard accouterments and decadent accommodations to experience places like the Galapagos and Antarctica . With the newest ice-strengthened hardware boasting high-end suites and gourmet food, that's no longer the case.

The toys are fancier

best luxury cruise lines reddit

Yes, some of the largest vessels afloat have skydiving and surfing simulators or virtual-reality rooms on board, but why settle for simulations when you can have actual adventures ?

Several of the luxury market's newer expedition ships have added helicopters and submarines to their lists of onboard amenities. Passengers can book them for use at an additional cost, allowing them bird's-eye (or fish's-eye) views of the surrounding sky and sea.

And the options keep growing. Years ago, the first three-person submersible was introduced on a ship. Now, onboard submarines are double the size, offering even more cruisers a chance to give it a go.

Bottom line

It's easy to immediately dismiss the idea of booking a luxury cruise when you see the price. But before you make a snap judgment, consider the value of what's included.

Do you prefer a more intimate onboard experience and visiting off-the-beaten-path ports? Are you a sucker for a fantastic gastronomic experience? Do you routinely purchase drink packages, Wi-Fi, alternative restaurant meals or shore excursions on other cruises? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a luxury sailing could be right for you.

What is the highest rated luxury cruise line.

Even among the crème de la crème of luxury liners, some stand out from the rest. While the cruising industry took a large operational and financial hit during the pandemic, companies have adapted and brought back quality travel with health and safety in mind.

Discover: How Much Does It Cost To Rent a Private Jet? Learn: 3 Signs You’re Serious About Raising Your Credit Score

The emphasis is still on luxury and catering to vacationers’ needs, but the best high-end cruise lines offer something unique to its passengers, who are looking to get away and have the experience of a lifetime.

While mainstream cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Disney or Carnival rule the seas with on-board amenities and activities for travelers of all ages, luxury lines can’t be beat for off-the-beaten-track destinations, customized travel, offboard excursions and top-shelf service.

In its 2022 Best Luxury Cruise Lines report, U.S. News & World Report rated the following six luxury cruise lines as the best. However, each of these luxury lines offer an equally diverse range of experiences and extravagances for the well-heeled traveler.

With input from sites like TripSavvy, The Richest, Travel + Leisure and Cruise Critic — who also rate all these six companies highly — it is easy to see that any of these six cruise lines could’ve topped a “best of” list for luxury cruise lines.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises

One of the best designed cruise lines is also one the most well-respected. With eight identical 930-passenger cruise ships in its fleet, Viking ‘s smaller ships allows them to access more exclusive ports throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. This adult-only luxury cruise line is perfect for those “looking for the perfect vacation to reignite the spark with their significant other, or perhaps wants something slightly different for their honeymoon,” according to The Richest.

Although mainly known for its European itineraries, Viking added Mississippi River and Great Lakes cruise offering this year, per Travel + Leisure. It’s easy to see why U.S. News has it ranked as its No. 1 Best Luxury Cruise Line.

2. Seabourn Cruise Line

Though it ranks second with U.S. News, The Richest ranks it at number 1 in its 10 Best Luxury Cruise Lines list for its intimate setting and detail to the finer things in life (like cultural and culinary partnerships with UNESCO and some of the most renowned chefs in the world respectively), but this cruise line is beloved for its exotic itineraries around the world. Whether you are itching to visit the Amazon or the Arctic — or anywhere in between and beyond — Seabourn caters to those looking to immerse themselves in a destination.

Its Seabourn expeditions allow adventurers the chance of a lifetime to visit popular and underexplored areas.

3. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent provides passengers with a luxury getaway with a personal touch. Although ranked third by U.S. News, Regent is consistently ranked near, if not at the top, of the best luxury cruise lines lists at outlets like Travel + Leisure and TripSavvy.

With one crew member for every 1-2 passengers, Regent’s Seven Seas ships offer all-suite accommodations and specialty culture and culinary lessons, per U.S. News. Regent’s all-inclusive packages include everything , from business-class flights to on-shore excursions plus any amenity you could wish for. With ocean views from every suite, voyages range from seven to 120 days. Its Seven Seas Explorer liner was billed as “the most luxurious ship ever built” upon its launch in July 2016, according to Cruise Critic.

With a smaller ship capacity and 1:2 ship member-to-passenger ratio, almost every luxury travel site describes Azamara cruises as “cozy,” and who are we to argue? According to Cruise Critic, Azamara’s fleet consists of four ships that travel to more than 300 ports in South America, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Asia. It also runs fashionable “county-intensive voyages,” which stick to one country but travel to multiple ports, so passengers can immerse themselves in a personalized country-culture cruise.

5. Silversea Cruises

Known for its beautiful vessels and specialty restaurants, Silversea is a popular choice among passengers wanting to cruise away to far-flung locales without the hustle and bustle of crowds. With a passenger capacity of around 700, according to U.S. News (The Richest claims between 100 and 596), Silversea was voted by TripSavvy as the Best Small Ships company.

The cruise line specializes in remote voyages (one of its most popular cruises travels to a host of Japanese and Russian ports) and boasts the best itineraries in the world. And what’s not to love about getting pampered by Silversea’s 24-hour butler service?

6. Oceania Cruises

Although some of their vessels hold over 1,200 guests, Oceania is recommended by TripSavvy as the best line for first-time cruisers because most of their ships sail with an average 850 guests, traveling to more than 450 ports around the world. TripSavvy also notes that Oceania cruises are less expensive than the larger luxury lines, but without skimping on the elegance.

Attention to detail is key with Oceania. Its butlers are graduates of the Guild of Professional English Butlers and its kitchen is staffed with world-class chefs, per Travel + Leisure.

10 of the Best Mediterranean Cruises for Every Type of Traveler

Here are 10 of the best Mediterranean cruises to take in 2022 and 2023.

The Mediterranean Sea touches 22 nations and borders more than 28,000 miles of coastline, according to the  Europe Environment Agency . From the Greek Islands to Egypt, Croatia to Morocco, and Slovenia to Spain, the rugged coastlines dip into the crystalline waters, providing a connection point to some of the most intriguing destinations on the planet. But, rather than traversing these destinations by car, train, or plane, visitors can see and do more by taking to the water for a Mediterranean cruise.

From seeing historical monuments to experiencing local cuisine, shopping in some of the most luxurious places on Earth, and visiting awe-inspiring beaches, cruising provides stellar connections to Mediterranean countries. These cruises also cater to every type of traveler — from multigenerational families to solo travelers with options for adults only and all ages. Here are 10 of the best Mediterranean cruises to check out for your next vacation.

Seabourn cruises are made for those who enjoy a touch of luxury. The cruise line offers all-inclusive options, making it easy to relax onboard and just enjoy the ride. Seabourn also offers various lengths and destinations for its cruises, including seven, 10, 14, and 21-day options, so everyone can find the one right for them.

Trip to Try:  7-day Classic Greek Isles and Ephesus

The week-long trip on the Seabourn Encore offers a glimpse at a few of Greece’s best islands. Departing from Athens, the journey stops in Patmos, Agios, Mykonos, and Skiathos but also sprinkles in a few Turkish delights, including Kusadasi and Bozcaada, before disembarking in Istanbul. Excursions include guided tours of historical sites like the Grotto of St. John in Patmos and wine tastings in Bozcaada.

Viking Cruises

Those looking for an adults-only option will find exactly what they need with Viking Cruises. The company is strictly for guests ages  18 and up , providing a more mature cruising environment. The company stops in dozens of ports, making finding a cruise that fits your travel desires a snap. And the cruise line offers free shore excursions to enable all guests to experience the ports to their fullest.

Trip to Try:  Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn

Spend 22 days with Viking on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn. The trip takes guests to seven countries, including Spain, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Monaco, and France, with stops in both major and smaller ports. Those looking to enhance the journey can book with “inclusive value,” which adds one complimentary shore excursion, free Wi-Fi, beer, wine, and soft drinks, visits to UNESCO sites, and more to allow for more time spent traveling and less time worrying about pricing. Guests can also book pre- and post-trip stays in ports of call if they aren’t ready to go home after three weeks on the water.

Azamara is a luxurious option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The cruise line also emphasizes hyper-local experiences to allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, culture, and life of its ports of call, even if they’re there just for a day. The cruise line offers a variety of destinations and cruise lengths, including 10, 12, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in the ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

Trip to Try:   15-night Pharaoh Kings and Emperors

Make your way through five counties (Italy, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this more than two-week adventure. The voyage highlights destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors and emphasizes the region’s spectacular history. Shore excursion options include exploring the ruins of Pompeii, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambiance of Capri for an entire day.

Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. The cruise line prides itself on its low guest-to-crew member ratio, ensuring your every need is easily met. The company offers plentiful options when it comes to Mediterranean sailings, including seven, 14, 21, and even 38-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this cruise company, you’re almost spoiled with choice, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about it as this year’s trip, then the next, then the next, and on and on forever, because there are just so many options available.

Trip to Try:   Monte Carlo to Athens

The 10-day trip takes sailors through ultra-luxe ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, the shore excursions with this journey abound. Though there’s plenty to do onboard too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.

Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from grandma to kids — should check out Celebrity Cruises. The cruise line offers more options for everyone onboard (think kids club to casinos), as well as varied shore excursions and affordable pricing options to make it a more viable trip for larger groups.

Trip to Try:   Best of Italy and Croatia

The nine-night trip takes guests to seven ports through Italy and Croatia, providing varied terrain and plentiful shore excursion options. Visit beautiful seaside towns like Portofino, explore the Venetian canals, and enjoy the ship's amenities during days at sea.

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers onboard. The line offers ships with between 51 to 364 suites, meaning they max out at far fewer passengers than its larger counterparts, which enables more personalized service and higher-end amenities. It also offers all-inclusive packages to reduce the stressors that often come with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Athens to Venice

This 22-day trip tracks its way through 20 ports via five countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, and Turkey. Walk the cobblestone streets on the Greek Islands, see the colorful coastline in Marmaris, admire the glittering lights from the homes that snake their way up Lovćen Mountain, and more. Onboard, dine in one of the ship’s eight restaurants, take a dip in the top deck pool, or lounge in a common space to regale your fellow guests about the day’s adventure.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Holland America also offers a varied pricing list to allow people to choose the right price point for them, with rooms ranging from interior staterooms that come with 151 square feet to over-the-top suites with 712 square feet to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  12-day Adriatic Dream

For 12 glorious days, you can set sail through the Mediterranean with Holland America. The trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). When not exploring at port, make sure to take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa, which comes with the bonus of the soft rocking of the waves to lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Danny Lehman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is yet another on the list that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but it more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, kids and teen offerings, and the fact that it now has “The Princess Luxury Beds” onboard. The cruise line created the beds in a special collaboration with a sleep expert to ensure every guest leaves feeling fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  14-day Mediterranean and Israel

The two-week trip stops in 10 different ports in Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and so much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with 119-foot balconies so you can let the fresh ocean breeze in.

Cunard Line

Classic, elegant, and forever in style, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if chicness is your top priority. Its boats are decked out in luxurious styling, including the Queen Elizabeth , which makes its way through the Med with art deco decor, plush sundeck furnishings, and high-end dining experiences included.

Trip to Try:  Western Mediterranean

Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Mallorca, Corsica, Rome, and Naples. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, shop and eat your way through Rome, walk in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte in Corsica, and so much more.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is the line to choose for those traveling in groups with varied interests and age levels. Think, the kids who want to play all day, the adults who want to lounge by the pool, the friend who wants to explore a city’s history through tours, or the friend who wants to stay up all night enjoying the onboard entertainment. And, best of all, it’s one of the few in the Med to offer options for those who are short on time or want to tack on a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  3-night Cyprus Cruise

Spend three perfect days sailing from Haifa, Israel to Limassol, Cyprus, and back again. The quick cruise is the perfect way to get on the water if you just want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. Check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have the perfect place to call home, even for a few days, each night.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

“This is your yacht, to do with as you please,” Captain Rob O’Leary said to guests of the Emerald Sakara , the second luxury superyacht from Emerald Cruises. “We have an international crew from 21 different nations, and we are all here for you.”

I was on the maiden voyage of the 360-foot Sakara, a December 2023 sailing with the added glamor of a Champagne christening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, led by the ship’s godmother Kelly Craighead. She is president of Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade organization.

“Sakara” is a Sanskrit word meaning “thoughts become things” – a fitting name, given the thought that went into the ship’s chic design.  And our itinerary for the week couldn’t be more yacht-like – an island-hopping experience in the West Indies, stopping in out-of-the-way ports that larger cruise ships can’t manage. And while some smaller boats can feel rocky, the Sakara’s stabilizers keep the ship on an even keel.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

With just 100 guests and 76 crew, the Sakara is part of the larger trend in cruising: smaller ships that cater to vacationers who want the style and feel of a yacht, and the intimate service that accompanies that, with the amenities of a larger ship. Craighead said that small-ship cruises offer “luxury at a great value, access to hidden-gem ports and unique features like marinas for water activities directly off the ship,” she says. “These small ships can even be chartered, for your own amazing, private yacht experience.”

After departing from San Juan, the Sakara reached the Puerto Rican island of Culebra in a few hours, just 20 miles off the coast. We hopped in a taxi van at the port to reach the pristine waters of Flamenco Beach, which consistently makes the world’s top 10 lists. It was a fall-asleep-on-the-sand kind of day, under brightly colored umbrellas, with multiple trips to the canteen for French fries.

“I hope you enjoyed Culebra today because it’s quite hard to get in, through a very narrow channel,” O’Leary said at a supper-hour briefing.

The next day, we stopped at the nearby island of Vieques, which is filled with wild horses – about 2,000 of them – most of whom are fully accustomed to the photo op. We docked at Esperanza Bay and wandered the waterfront. There were jeeps or ATVs available to rent for those who wanted to beach-hop, but we settled into the sand at Sun Bay. And when we sailed into Cruz Bay on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. John the following day, there were yachts and catamarans everywhere – and the Sakara fit right in.

The crew outdid itself the next day at White Bay Beach on Jost Van Dyke, the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. A barbecue feast awaited us, along with beach loungers, steel-drum entertainment, and all the paddles and water toys from the ship. Later, we wandered down the beach to find a young yacht crowd, groups of friends who have rented their boats, all knee-deep in their mojitos.

“I get a real kick out of driving the Emerald Sakara into St. Barths, muscling in and anchoring next to all the other superyachts,” O’Leary said. “It looks good in the pictures.” A stop there brought a snorkeling excursion, a bit of high-end shopping and a few rosé-soaked hours on Plage de Saline.

Back on board, the creature comforts of the Sakara included plenty of outdoor space to connect with the ocean, a small infinity pool, a full-service spa and a large, elegant dining room and terrace. It’s all part of the cushy yacht lifestyle.

The ship will spend the summer and fall cruising the Mediterranean Sea – heading for the French and Italian rivieras, Croatia and Greece – with eight-day itineraries from $5,100. The Emerald Sakara will be back in the Caribbean next December, with eight-day cruises starting at $4,100.
