Hi Ivy, thk u so so much for sharing ur passion. Envy.😊 May l ask for ur advice if back packing alone to Betong on public transport is doable ? Any tips is appreciated. 🙏🏻 Tqvm

Hi, sorry about my late reply. It's easy to get around in downtown Betong if you stay in the city. For going to the Piyamit Tunnel and skywalk, you can probably book a private ride through your hotel. However, I'm not sure if there's public transport from KL to Betong, maybe can check more info on google. :) Anyway, thanks for dropping by my blog, and I hope to see you around again. :)

Hi, is Grab car available in Betong? Thanks

I think Grab is not easy over there. But if you stay in the city, it's very convenient to walk around.

Hello! I was wondering if you encountered any night markets during your visit? If you did, by any chance, do you know their opening and closing times, the days they are held, and where they are located? There is very limited information about Betong's night markets on the internet unfortunately. Thanks in advance!

Betong (เบตง) is a district of Yala Province and the southernmost town in Thailand. The language, culture and religion influence from Malaysia makes this part of Thailand a unique destination.

Bordering Malaysia, Betong is very popular with Malaysian and Singaporean tourists.

Surrounded by forests and mountains with a majority of the population being of Chinese origin, this small town is a unique destination still unvisited by most western tourists.

Most of Thailand falls in to the generic high and low season categories, including Betong.

High season - begins in November and runs through to February, bringing cooler temperatures, lush greenery from the previous months of rain, good air quality, and less rain. The downside is larger crowds and sometimes higher prices for tours, flights and accomodation.

Low season - begins in July and runs through to October. During low season the temperatures are higher, the chance of rain and storms are higher. That doesn't mean it's a bad time to visit though, if you can be flexible, there are deals to be found on flights and accomodation.

While it's always hot in Betong, the small change in temperature between high and low season can be just enough that the heat isn't unbearable when out and about.

Where to stay

Instead of recommending hotels, we think it will be more useful to share our process so you can pick based on your own critera for location, budget and style.

We always start our search on either Booking.com or Agoda . They have an easy to user interface and have some extra benefits for "Genius" and "VIP" users. You can also sometimes pay with credit card in advance if you're playing the cashback or air miles game.

Booking.com

  • Search for specific province, city or town.
  • Apply rating filters for a minimum rating or either 7, 8 or 9.
  • Apply other filters: budget, fitness, breakfast, etc.
  • If you have a specific location in mind, use map view to browse and make a final selection.

If there are too many properties available to choose from, increase the rating filter for less, higher rated selections.

Final notes: Prices are dynamic. Check the same hotel on both Booking.com and Agoda to see which has the best deal at any given time (go through to checkout to make sure all VAT and service charges are factored in). You can go one step further by calling the hotel and checking the price for booking directly. In our experience this saves money 50% of the time but you have less guarantees.

Emergency contacts

Knowing an emergency number could save your own, or somebody elses life. Take a photo or save these numbers on your phone:

Police & emergencies - 191 The most important number to remember. If the operator is unable to speak English, call 1155 (below).

Tourist Police - 1155 or (+66) 2308-0333 This hotline is available 24 hours a day and they will all speak English. This is an important phone number to remember - They will help you out with any concerns or questions you have and can redirect you to the correct number you may need.

Public Ambulance - 1669 Dialing this number will connect you to a public ambulance service, which will dispatch a vehicle to your location. The average response time for urban areas is around 10 minutes, but may take up to 30 minutes in rural areas. English-speaking staff should be available to assist you.

Fire Department - 199 In case of an emergency such as a house fire, or forest fire, call 199 for the Fire Department to be dispatched to your location.

Highway Police - 1193 If you plan on driving in Thailand, then you may end up needing to use this number if you break down in an unsafe place etc.

A Historical & Tourist Guide For Betong, Thailand (Things To Do in Betong)

betong thailand guide

So you want to head to the Deep South of Thailand and Betong has come up on your list? You’re in the right hands. As a history fanatic, I explored Betong in-depth, wanting to learn more about the communist history, the tunnels linking with Malaysia, and the history of WW2 invasions. Alongside traveling to the main attractions, exploring the culture, food, the beauty of nature, and more. In this article, I will provide uncovered information you have seen nowhere else online. You will learn a lot about Betong’s history, you will find a secret museum tucked away in a little coffee shop, where a Thai local who has spent his life’s work writing books about the town’s interesting history has a huge collection, the village where the Malaysian Liberation Army’s leader Chin Peng fled too (again not many know about this), and alongside all the usual logistical stuff you need to know to get around, stay, etc.

This is not your standard “best things to do in Betong!!!” post. It’s a peel-back-the-layers travel guide that explores the local gems, no one bothers to spend the time to look for.

Why trust me? I spent 4 months traveling all over Thailand by train, motorbike, and more; on a journey to learn more about the very new state’s history (changed in 1939) , focussing on WW2 and communism.

Here’s a video I made about my journey through the Deep South of Thailand, Betong was the 3rd stop in the journey :

Attractions & Things To See (At A Glance)

Please select the tab you’d like to look at below. Each tab includes a description alongside a gallery of images or videos you can view to see what the attraction is like.

Secret Museum Am Puea Betong

Called “Am Puea Betong” in Thai (อำเพอเบตง), here you’ll find a cafe with art plastered along the walls and 150 year old photos and antiques that explain the history of Betong.

best time to visit betong thailand

The owner is a published author who has written about the history of Betong and has been given a medal by the Thai princess. If you can speak Thai, you will learn a lot. If not, there is a guest house nearby called “insert name”. This is the lady who helped translate the bits I didn’t understand.

He also said he’d take me on a tour for 600 baht for the entire day, but unfortunately, there was a miscommunication and it never went through. I’m sure if he asked he’d do the same for you. He was extremely knowledgeable.

Peace Village, Betong

A small development village near Piyamit Tunnels that most tourists miss. Here you’ll find the old barracks of the Malaysian People’s Army members. During 1952 they fled to different parts of Southern Thailand, including this small village in Betong, now named “Peace Village”, (but on google maps as Chulalongporn Development Village 10″.

best time to visit betong thailand

There is a small museum on-site here which costs 60 baht entry, and you can even stay the night in the barracks as they’ve converted them into hotels. It is surrounded by nature, tucked in between mountains, and has some gardens and activity areas on-site.

The owners are of Malaysian descent. They were most likely black-listed from re-entry to Malaysia after the Malaysian government banished all communists from re-entering the country. Since this has been lifted, many of the Malay Communists opted to stay in Peace Village (which you’ll find here in this location).

Although there were Chinese communists in Southern Thailand, very few were, with most of Chinese descent being situated in the North, with many having immigrated and become citizens in Thailand.

Very beautiful, extremely interesting spot if you’re into the history of South East Asia. Most people have no idea it’s here either! I got the information by chatting to a local policeman who was stunned that I knew Thai and about the history of Betong.

Piyamit Tunnels

Piyamit tunnels are a series of tunnels built by Malaysian communists in 1976 that were used to hide the MLNA members from Thai and Malaysian forces. They were also used as bomb shelters and had medical, and dental bays alongside schools, communist education camps, and even sports areas.

best time to visit betong thailand

This is a must-see here in Betong, and it’s incredible to see how some MLNA members lived here during the Thai cold war. The tunnels were built in a matter of 3 months and were built through the mountain. They are 1km long.

Entry is 60 baht.

Something really interesting I learned here was about smoke ovens. The communists would use a special system to cook, so that the smoke coming from their cooking would blend in and look like mist from the mountains, hiding from any helicopters flying over, or bomb raids.

There’s a great museum on site that has all kinds of old items they used to live here. There are even some USSR artifacts too!

Employees are dotted around the tunnels and (if it’s not too busy) help to explain the history and what the communists used each tunnel for. I’m pretty certain some of them are ex-MLNA members, but I’m not entirely sure.

Gunung Village

Driving 30 km drive down the 410 road from Betong, you’ll find a village called Gunung. This village is extremely friendly and a very interesting insight into Thai-Muslim life away from urbanization. There is a beautiful Buddhist temple (ironically considering most are Muslim) and a Mosque located here. You can also find the famous Gunung Sea Mist mountain viewpoint, Tae Pue Bridge, Ayerwang Skywalk and King Rama IX waterfall located nearby.

best time to visit betong thailand

I’d personally recommend staying in one of the guesthouses (please do not expect any fancy hotel here) overnight to get a full experience of the area and to visit the local viewpoints.

The drive through these mountains is up there with one of the most beautiful drives I’ve had in SEA, Laos’ Vang Vieng only just topping it. Highly recommended!

Also, if you come here find the man selling the green oranges… they are the sweetest oranges I’ve had in my life. They look horrible and rotten on the outside, but are deliciously juicy on the inside.

best time to visit betong thailand

Probably the most touristy thing here is the Skywalk. It’s in the Betong district but is closer to Yala. To get here you’ll have to organize transport. It’s close to Gunung village, so it’s a good idea to visit here, get yourself a hotel/guesthouse then explore the area’s beauty.

best time to visit betong thailand

I couldn’t write an article about Betong without including this, but unfortunately, while we were there we did not visit, so below are some photos from the Tourism Directory of Thailand.

Betong Hot Spring

Located just outside Betong, there is also a beautiful hot spring and swimming pool. You can swim in it for free, but when you need to clean yourself after you will need to pay for the use of showers. There is a shop here and some beautiful nature to see nearby.

You can also apparently boil an egg in the water, but I didn’t personally try this myself as many report that it takes a very long time to do so.

Unfortunately, when we went, it was undergoing some kind of construction, and parts of it were closed, so we didn’t get to fully experience it. However, when fully open this is definitely a must-visit for a nice day. There are shops nearby, the nature is beautiful and you have a nice, warm pool.

Would recommend going in the afternoon as the water is hot, and so is the weather.

Thai-Malay Border

Close to Betong, you’ll find the Thai-Malay border, alongside some mountain roads, where you can see the border walls that surround the mountain .

Here is a very interesting spot if you’re interested in WW2 history, as this marks the spot where the first Punjabi-British troop was gunned down by the Royal Thai Police defending the town, during Operation Krohcol.

@wehatethecold Forgotten WW2 Battles – Thai Police vs Punjabi British 🇹🇭 ♬ original sound – Harry&Iris

The troops were trying to get to a spot called “The Ledge” so they could blow it up, blocking the roads and therefore preventing a Japanese invasion of British Malaya.

best time to visit betong thailand

The surrounding nature is beautiful, and the drive through the mountains is incredible if you can rent a motorcycle to venture through it all. This is also the Southernmost Point of Thailand, and there are a few things to mark the spot. It’s not the biggest attraction, but it’s a great, lesser-known location to visit if you’re interested in the history.

Mongkolit Tunnel

This is the first and longest tunnel road built in Thailand in 2001. The tunnel is beautifully lit and when driven through it is almost like going into hyperspace in the Millennium Falcon. It was built to connect other areas of Betong with the main town.

On the other side of this tunnel, you will find a huge night market, alongside some murals that showcase the local airport, and an interesting garden that is lit at night, with some Chicken statues and other animals.

The other side of the tunnel is pretty disappointing, but the ride through the tunnel is great. If you want to stop the other side you can park your bike pretty much anywhere you see other bikes parked, for free!

Clock Tower

In the main square, there is a clock tower that was built originally to host a radio that was used to broadcast the news and other announcements to the town. It has stood for over 150 years and lights up at night to creates a beautiful atmosphere on the bustling street.

best time to visit betong thailand

The clock tower marks the centre of the town, and you will find the main streets of Betong here. There are popular food stalls, restaurants shops, and hotels on this road.

If you’re in the area, you can try the local duck noodle soup from the food market area – it’s delicious and only costs 60 baht for a bowl.

Night Garden

Past the Mongkolit tunnel, you will find a small area with a small garden that has different statues of animals and other things. At night it is beautifully lit, and many people come here to eat at the night market stands and visit the tourist shops nearby.

It’s a pretty cool area, but in all honestly it’s not a “must-see”. You could easily skip this if you wanted to do more. However, it’s quite close proximity to the clock tower, so you’d be able to kill two birds with one stone and visit both. We took a look because of how close it is, but it’s nothing special.

If you want to stop here and have a motorcycle you can park your bike pretty much anywhere you see other bikes parked, for free!

There is a stadium near the top of the town for the local football team Betong FC. You are able to visit and walk around the side of the grounds.

Here you’ll also find a gym you can pay 30 baht to use with weights machines, bikes etc. The gym doesn’t have any aircon and the equipment is pretty low quality, but it does the job if you need to work out while on holiday.

This is also a great spot to sit and eat food with friends. When we last went, many people were sitting on the sides of the road above the stadium, eating and drinking on the grass. It provides an amazing view of the stadium and parts of the town. We personally sat here and ate some takeaway ordered from the night market nearby.

The stadium is also very close to the Betong Museum and a beautiful little park where you’ll also find more food stands. Once again, it’s f*cking beautiful at night.

Duty-Free Market

Because Betong is so close to the border with Malaysia, there is a duty-free market you can shop at. There’s honestly not a lot here, you can get some shirts, sweets, and other things you’d expect at a duty-free market like alcohol.

If you’re not crossing back to Malaysia there’s no point purchasing duty-free goods from here, but it’s an interesting spot to look at if you have nothing else to do.

Getting To Betong

Getting to Betong is quite difficult unless you’re coming from Malaysia.

There are two ways you can travel to Betong:

  • Get a train to Hat Yai, and then a Minibus to Betong
  • Fly to Hat Yai any airport in Thailand (Betong’s airport is currently closed)

Flying To Betong

An airport was recently opened in Betong, but the flight route has been canceled due to low demand. When we arrived in Betong, the airport was closed, so no flights currently go to Betong right now. You can however get a flight to Hat Yai, and then from there get a Minibus down to Betong. This is the quickest way to get there, but the most expensive.

Getting The Train & Minibus To Betong

best time to visit betong thailand

If you want to save some money, get the train to Hat Yai, then get a Minibus from Hat Yai’s bus station. A Minibus ticket will cost you 200 baht ($5).

We personally took a local, hard wooden seated train from Bangkok to Hat Yai, which cost 70 baht total ($2) to save money. Then we went to Betong using a Minibus from the bus station in Hat Yai.

The Minibus won’t leave until it is full, so you might have to wait around for the bus to completely fill up. However, if you want to try South Thailand’s indigenous medicine, you can head to a shop nearby with a hilarious sign in which Popeye is holding Kratom leaves instead of spinach.

Getting Around Betong

Due to the decline in tourism, getting around Betong is quite difficult. There is no Bolt, or Grab there yet and there are very few Tuk Tuks lying about. To get a Tuk Tuk you will have to hail one down. I am not sure of the prices as I didn’t travel by Tuk Tuk here.

You can additionally travel very easily and cheaply by Songtaew around Betong. These look like pickup trucks that have a back for passengers. Songtaews usually charges 20-30 baht per trip, but this entirely depends on the location. Do not let a Songtaew driver rip you off, you should be charged no more than 80 baht for a ride.

My recommendation is to rent a motorcycle, you can get them from a local rental shop for 300-500 baht per day, depending on your rental period. If you book for longer, you will get a bigger discount; shorter bookings will cost more. You usually receive a helmet with your booking and a full tank of petrol, it is expected you’ll bring it back with a full tank.

I’m Harry – and I was tired of the same old “10 best places I’ve never been but I’m writing about for some reason” blog posts. So… I’m a young traveller on a mission to travel the world and share my true, unfiltered experience, including all the gristly details. From packing my life into one bag for a year, to traveling Vietnam by motorbike, to sorting out Visas for specific countries – I’ve done it all, am doing it all and only give my advice on things I have done – not regurgitated cr*p from another source *cough* most publications *cough* . So bear with us! This project will take some time to grow, and will take a fair bit of money. But I’m determined to make it the single best source of information about traveling on the internet.

Attractions in Betong , clock tower

The road trip commenced at 8.30 am, and we departed from Kuala Lumpur excitedly.

En route, we made delightful stops, including a memorable lunch at Sauk, a quaint village in Perak.

After a scenic drive, we reached Pengkalan Hulu around 2 pm, ready to enter Thailand through the southernmost point of Thailand.

A. Exploring Betong Thailand: Must-Visit Tourist Attractions

This section will present a compilation of attractions in Betong. Throughout our journey, we primarily relied on Google Maps for driving directions, enabling us to explore most of these intriguing places at our own pace. However, for shorter distances, we also opted for the popular Tuk Tuk, Thailand’s main mode of land transport.

We took a twenty-minute walk from our hotel to the town area one morning. It was a pleasant stroll, but upon concluding our visit, we found it more convenient to call a Tuk Tuk for the return journey to our hotel. The Tuk Tuk fare for all four of us amounted to 80 baht, a cost-effective and comfortable.

1. Exploring Betong’s Historical Gem: The Piyamit Tunnel

Attractions in Betong , Piyamit Tunnel

The Piyamit Tunnel is one of the most prominent attractions in Betong, Thailand. It holds significant importance as it served as an air raid shelter for Malaysian Communists who migrated to Thailand after World War II. Constructed in 1976, this tunnel has become a remarkable attraction for history enthusiasts and curious travelers.

Situated at Ban Piyamit 1, Tambon Tano Mae Ro, the Piyamit Tunnel is open daily to the public from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm. Our visit to this historical gem followed a delightful trip to the Betong hot springs, conveniently located on the same road. The tunnel can be reached approximately 40 minutes from the city center and 20 minutes from the hot springs.

On arriving at the site, we found ample parking lots in front of the entrance, making access hassle-free.

Before entering the tunnel area, a special section is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guan Yin. Additionally, right opposite the entrance are a food store and souvenir shop.

The entrance fee for this historical experience is an affordable 60 baht per person.

Below are the interesting viewpoints of the entire area, including the tunnel. Our tour lasted about 1.5 hours.

2. Skywalk Ayerweng: Chasing the Sunrise and Sea of Clouds in Betong

Attractions in Betong

At 4 am, we woke up, eager to witness the breathtaking sunrise and sea of clouds, the highlight of our trip in Betong at the Skywalk Ayerweng (Aiyoe Weng). The drive took 45 minutes, and when we arrived, hundreds of visitors were already ahead of us. It is so popular as it is among the most popular attractions in Betong.

Attractions in Betong

Upon parking at the spacious lot, we hopped on the four-wheel drive to reach the Skywalk, paying a fee of 30 baht for the ascent and 20 baht for the return trip per person. After arriving at the Skywalk, we had to purchase tickets at 200 baht each and wait for our turn to enter, as only 50 people were allowed at a time.

Besides, we must buy a pair of reusable shoe covers for 30 baht to protect the walkway. Once on the Skywalk, we climbed to the highest scenic viewing platform for a stunning view.

Descending to the lower platform, we walked on an extended glass panel offering the best view of the surroundings.

However, we were disappointed as strong winds prevented the anticipated Betong sea of clouds (or sea of mist) and obscured the beautiful sunrise behind drifting dark clouds.

Afterward, we sought solace in Cafe Tai Mhok near the entrance, enjoying a quick coffee before returning to Betong town.

About Skywalk Ayerweng:

Skywalk Ayerweng, a new tourist attraction and landmark in Betong District, Yala Province, southern Thailand, is known as the region’s only skywalk. Located in Aiyerweng, Betong District, Yala Province, the 61-meter-long walkway stands approximately 600 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the mountain scenery and a thick sea of fog at 2,038 feet above sea level. Nestled in Betong’s peaceful Tano Maero area, the Winter Flower Garden offers visitors a serene escape from the city, where they can bask in the tranquility and savor the fresh air. The garden’s charm lies in its lush greenery and exquisite flowers, providing a delightful experience as visitors wander through and admire the diverse floral displays. Despite undergoing refurbishment, the garden still showcased some beautiful flowers, albeit on a smaller scale than anticipated.

A notice informed us that the garden would be fully reopened after refurbishment, with the grand unveiling scheduled for November 2023.

Raised in a natural, free-range environment, the chickens’ superior flavor is attributed to their free-range living conditions, making them a delicious and sought-after culinary experience.

8. Other attractions in Betong

There are several attractions in Betong we did not visit; you may want to include them in your itinerary.

  • Standing proudly on a hilltop within Betong’s town center and nestled amidst the temple grounds of Wat Phutthatiwat, the Phra Mahathat Chedi Phra Phutthathamprakat is an impressive religious structure.
  • The Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, known as Suan Pa Phra Namaphithai Phak Tai in Thai, is a vital habitat for numerous fascinating species. You will be delighted to encounter an impressive variety of wild animals among the sanctuary’s inhabitants, including 10 of the 13 hornbill species in Thailand.

The Meaning Behind “Betong”:

Fascinatingly, the name Betong has its roots in the Malay language. The word Betong originated from  “Betung” in Malay, which means large bamboo. The region’s abundance of rough giant bamboo, scientifically referred to as Dendrocalamus asper, has become Betong’s distinctive symbol.

B. Smooth Border Crossing and SIM Card Tips for Traveling to Thailand

For Malaysian tourists intending to drive their Malaysia-registered cars into Thailand, it is essential to be aware of Thailand’s requirements to cross the border at the Thai-Malaysian border.

1. Insurance

One crucial aspect to note is the need for Thailand car insurance. If the distance from Malaysia to your destination in Thailand is less than 50km, Malaysian cars are exempt from purchasing Thailand car insurance. However, it is advisable to consider getting coverage, as the standard Thailand car insurance typically includes protection for Third-Party Liability and Property Damage, albeit up to a certain limit.

To ensure our trip to Thailand was worry-free, we took the proactive step of obtaining comprehensive insurance through our insurance agent in Kuala Lumpur before embarking on our journey. This gave us sufficient coverage for unforeseen events and a smooth driving experience in Thailand.

2. Immigration

Upon reaching the border, we received assistance from a counter to complete the necessary immigration formalities. This involved filling out the immigration card (TM6 Form) for each person and the car entry form (TM2 Form) for drivers, with a nominal fee of RM 2 per person. Once completed, we proceeded to the immigration counter to get our passports stamped and then submitted the vehicle declaration form, which required presenting the original JPJ card. With all formalities in order, we were ready to continue our journey into Thailand.

3. Get a local SIM card during your visit to Betong

A helpful reminder for fellow travelers is to consider purchasing a SIM card for internet usage at the same counter where we received assistance to fill in the forms. Initially, I assumed I could use roaming with my DIGI connection. Still, to my surprise, I later discovered that roaming services were not operational in Yala province, including the Betong district.

4. Fuel for our car

To save on fuel costs, we fill our car with a full tank before entering Thailand, considering that petrol and diesel are more affordable in Malaysia.

We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The perceived humidity level in Betong, as measured by the percentage of time in which the humidity comfort level is muggy , oppressive , or miserable , does not vary significantly over the course of the year, staying within 2% of 98% throughout.

Definitions of the growing season vary throughout the world, but for the purposes of this report, we define it as the longest continuous period of non-freezing temperatures (≥ 32°F) in the year (the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere, or from July 1 until June 30 in the Southern Hemisphere).

Temperatures in Betong are sufficiently warm year round that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss the growing season in these terms. We nevertheless include the chart below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures experienced throughout the year.

Time Spent in Various Temperature Bands and the Growing Season in Betong

Growing degree days are a measure of yearly heat accumulation used to predict plant and animal development, and defined as the integral of warmth above a base temperature, discarding any excess above a maximum temperature. In this report, we use a base of 50°F and a cap of 86°F .

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

Silky-soft beaches, jungle-draped mountains, incredible food and a well-connected position at the heart of Southeast Asia have made Thailand a tourism hub for decades.

It welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who dream of perpetually sunny skies and balmy weather might be dismayed at the pelting rain that arrives like clockwork every July or the sky-high price of their hotel from December to January.

The kingdom is full of diversions – myriad night markets, thundering waterfalls, even cherry blossoms and the occasional dusting of frost – but to experience them for yourself, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Here’s how.

Asian family enjoying summer vacation on the beach in morning with kids on their shoulders and the man pointing to something

December to February is best for beaches

The prevailing joke about Thai weather is that the country has three seasons: hot; wet and hot; and really, really hot. That may be, but when the “cool” season rolls around in December, you will find Thais bundled up in sweaters and even puffer jackets to combat temperatures that fall as low as 23°C (73°F).

While this may be cold for Thais, it’s perfect for international travelers hitting the beach, especially those escaping the northern winter, and resorts like Phuket , Samui and Krabi are predictably packed with sun-seekers at this time of year.

Daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) make outdoor activities warm but bearable, while nights are a hive of activity, with street food vendors lining the sidewalks and markets clad in fairy lights tempting even the most unwilling of shoppers.

The cool season is not for beachcombers alone. This time of year sees frost up north in the mountains as temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). The northeast region even ushers in its own cherry blossom season as Phu Lom Lo erupts in a burst of pink Himalayan cherry blooms. Early morning hikers are rewarded with sunrise views over a sea of fog at the northern border with Laos , and wildflowers dapple the slopes of Doi Suthep and Phu Tabberk .

Not surprisingly then, this time is considered Thailand’s high season, when hotel and transportation prices are at their peak. However, the payoff is the kingdom at arguably its most beautiful and welcoming, temperature-wise.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival in Bangkok, Thailand.

March and April are best for tropical fruit and Songkran

The weather, even for Thais, becomes alarmingly toasty during Thailand’s “summer” when temperatures average 30°C (87°F). School is out, meaning the capital is less crowded than usual, and the beaches are typically jammed with Bangkokians seeking reprieve from the heat. Meanwhile, temperatures in the usually temperate north soar to 36°C (97°F).

While it may seem a miserable time to visit, foodies will have a field day because all of Thailand’s most beloved fruits – mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans and Marian plums – are in season.

In mid-April, Thailand celebrates its new year, Songkran , and the streets burst into joyful water fights. You’ll find the entire country in celebration: families seeking blessings from their elders, Thais dancing in the streets, and travelers receiving benedictions in the form of perfumed water on the hands, daubings of brightly colored powder on the cheeks or (most likely) a blast of water in the face. Fans of water fights (and getting drenched) will find their like-minded brethren anywhere in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, fans of an empty Bangkok can take advantage of… an empty Bangkok. That means breezy commutes from one end of the city to the other, less competition at popular restaurants and fewer crowds to contend with at shopping malls and theaters. The change in the city is so pronounced that quite a few Bangkokians prize this time of year, opting to make sure that when Songkhran rolls around, they celebrate in the capital.

May to October is best for accommodation bargains

Thailand’s rainy season is long, but it doesn’t necessarily mean non-stop torrential downpours. Monsoon rains, especially before July, are typically violent but short, usually arriving in the early evening and lasting for 20 to 30 minutes. (Luckily, Thailand’s location means it avoids the strong typhoons experienced by Vietnam and the Philippines.) The problem is Bangkok traffic snarls for hours as a result, but travelers in less congested destinations are not necessarily affected, and hotel and transportation prices linger at months-long lows.

From May to July, beach resorts on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand – especially on weekdays – are basically deserted, claiming only a fraction of the prices they would normally charge during high season. This means that even at five-star resorts, choice rooms can be rented for far less than their usual rate. And while there will likely be daily rains, they’re usually brief.

Low-season rates extend to non-beach-but-still-popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Khao Sok , where a treasure trove of accommodation options, from floating bungalows to mountaintop cabins, awaits savvy bargain hunters willing to put up with a sudden shower or two. In contrast, July and August are peak season for islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Samui , where the weather is less affected by monsoon rains.

From September to October, the northeast is brimming with waterfalls, providing impromptu bathing areas for visitors with the foresight to bring bathing suits or even just towels. A word of warning: this is also when flooding may occur in the north or northeast, with water reaching all the way to Bangkok in some years. Only riverside areas are at risk, so make sure to check before you go.

Scores of lit lanterns float in the dark skies of Thailand as part of the Loi Krathong festival

November is best for experiencing Loi Krathong

November marks the beginning of the dry season and is considered the shoulder to high season, but bargains can still be found among the bigger local hotel chains.

On the night of November’s full moon, the country celebrates its Loi Krathong festival, marking the end of the rainy season. This is also when people float away their sins by placing candles on makeshift river rafts or lanterns in hopes of welcoming the coming year with a clean slate.

Travel Guide: Top Things to do in Betong – Attractions, Famous Food, and more

best time to visit betong thailand

Think Thailand , think popular spots like Bangkok , Phuket , Chiang Mai , Krabi … you get the drift.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that those places, as vibrant as they are, make up only a small fraction of a country that is half a million square kilometres in size, with a population of 69 million. There are many other less traveled spots with hidden gems, and I discovered one of these on a weekend trip – to the border town of Betong. It is about five hours drive from Kuala Lumpur , accessible via the North-South highway heading to Grik and Pengkalan Hulu.

best time to visit betong thailand

Sitting between the Malaysian state of Perak and southern Thailand, Betong (from Malay ‘ betung ‘, which means bamboo) is home to an estimated 20-30,000 residents, mainly Thais, Chinese and Malays. This also means that most people speak a mix of Thai, Malay, Cantonese, Mandarin or other Chinese dialects.

For a small town, Betong has good facilities: there is a post office, hospital, school, market, municipal council, places of worship and many stores offering different services and goods. Due to its close proximity to Malaysia, many Malaysian tourists visit over the weekend, and there is a flourishing tourist trade, with hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. If you’re here on a 3D2N stay, there’s more than enough to see (and eat!), with time to spare for chillin’ in a relaxing, small-town-like setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

BETONG ATTRACTIONS

1 ) Explore a (former) communist hideout @ the Piyamit Tunnels

best time to visit betong thailand

High up in the hills, about half an hour’s drive away from Betong town is the Piyamit Tunnels, once used by members of the Communist Party to evade the Malayan-Thai authorities. The 1960s was a time of unrest for both Malaya (now Malaysia) and Thailand due to the communist insurgency, and Betong was where many Malayan communists fled to and made base camp. Life was difficult in the jungle for the 50-60 people living here. They couldn’t have open fires for cooking or to dry their clothes. Sanitation was a problem. To act as bomb shelters, they dug tunnels (which stretch 1km long and have 9 exit points) out of the earth, sometimes with their bare hands. Be prepared to hike a little as the museum/attraction sites are far in. You’ll pass by quaint little streams and lush vegetation during your journey.

2 ) Stroll through the Winter Flower Garden

best time to visit betong thailand

Located just a few kilometres away from the Piyamit Tunnels, the Winter Flower Garden is a well kept attraction that offers great opportunities for pretty pictures. The spacious garden is home to temperate-climate flowers and trees, such as roses and pines. The place is quiet and relaxing, with a pond stocked with fat koi fish. If you’re looking for a pure getaway from all the city distractions, there are also chalets to rent for stay, a cafe and restaurant.

3) Let the minerals heal your body at the Betong Hot Springs

best time to visit betong thailand

On your way to the Piyamit Tunnels/Winter Flower Garden, you’ll pass by the Betong Hot Springs , a natural lake rich with minerals. The pools are surrounded by nicely landscaped gardens, eateries and shops. Entrance is free. However as it was a really hot day, we opted to just soak our legs instead.

4) Pay homage to Buddha at Wat Phuttathiwat

best time to visit betong thailand

Back in town, stop by at the golden Wat Phuttathiwat and admire the building’s unique architecture. Situated on a hilltop, the Thai Buddhist temple has sharp spires typical of Thai architecture. Step inside to cool marble floors, beautiful traditional motifs and tapestries depicting scenes from Buddha’s life, and oddly enough, stained glass windows similar to those you find in a church. The balcony on the shrine’s third floor is the highest vantage point in town, where you’ll be able to see the whole of Betong.

5) Explore the town – Clocktower

best time to visit betong thailand

Explore the streets and go shopping! 🙂 During the day there are shops selling cheap cookware (pots, pans, etc.), clothing, Chinese herbs, groceries and more, while at night, street stalls make their presence known in alleyways. Nightlife is not as vibrant as it is in Bangkok or Phuket, but there are still bars you can frequent (they look seedy as hell though). Massage parlours offer cheap promos. Not sure if there would be happy endings; heard that there is prostitution here.

The town has a neat block-by-block layout, so navigating the place is easy.  If you’re lost, just remember the main landmark which is the roundabout/clocktower

6) Take a selfie with the largest mailbox in the world

best time to visit betong thailand

Well, what do you know – Betong is home to the largest mailbox in the world! Measuring 9 metres tall, the structure sits in front of the City Convention Hall. I’m not actually sure if this is for show or if people actually put letters in it, haha. There is also another smaller 3m mailbox at the town’s clocktower, which was built in 1924.

6) People watch

best time to visit betong thailand

One of my favourite activities to do (not creepy at all): Watch the locals go about their daily lives. The pace is much slower here than it is in a major city, so you’ll often find people just hanging around doing nothing, or enjoying a smoke (and a hot bun) by the road. (Above) A soft toy peddler rearranges his wares on a motorized cart.

7) Buy fresh and cheap produce at the Central Market

best time to visit betong thailand

Betong’s Market is surprisingly large for such a small town. Spanning several floors, there are wet and dry sections, which is further divided into category (ie vegetables, meat, seafood, etc.). The Thai /Chinese sellers have separate stalls from the Muslim ones. Petai is particularly popular in Betong; you can get peeled ones for 200baht (RM26) per kg.

8) Bonus: Blue Mosque

best time to visit betong thailand

For Muslim visitors, Betong is home to the Ahmadi Mosque , or the ‘blue mosque’ owing to the blue colour on its dome. We didn’t stop by but the building looks pretty at night as it is lit up with different coloured lights.

FAMOUS FOOD IN BETONG

Attractions aren’t the only thing you can experience in Betong – there’s also an array of mouthwatering dishes to try! Since it’s so close to Malaysia, textures and tastes are not too different so I don’t think it’ll be a problem for even the more delicate palates.

1 ) Bird’s nest

Where to get it: Inter Bird’s Nest Soup (Waze)

best time to visit betong thailand

Birds nest is a Betong specialty, and you can get huge warm bowls of it cooked either in ginseng or rock sugar at Inter Birds Nest , near the centre of town for 200baht per bowl. If you’re thinking of taking some home, they also sell them in dried form.

2 ) Betong Chicken

Where to get it: Ta Yern Chinese Restaurant

best time to visit betong thailand

Betong’s chickens are said to be more tender, with a smoother texture. To bring out the best flavours, the chicken is usually prepared poached, drizzled over with soy sauce.

3 ) Cheapo dimsum

Where to get it: Seng Dimsum

best time to visit betong thailand

Located just across the road near the clocktower, Seng Dimsum does brisk business with its super affordable dimsum plates at 20baht each. Granted the portions are small, but they stack up really fast! Aside from your typical siewmai/fishball varieties, they also have some not-so-traditional ones too.

4 ) Braised fish maw soup

Where to get it: unnamed shop, across the road from the market

best time to visit betong thailand

This is something I rarely see in Malaysia except at banquets, because fish maw is so expensive. You can find the ‘stall’ in front of a bak kut teh shop across the road from the market (you can sit inside, but remember to order something from the bak kut teh or they’ll give you the stinkface…since the space belongs to them).

The fish maw sellers scoop up bowls of the warm broth from two giant vats. Each bowl costs 80baht and comes chock full of ingredients – at least four to five largish pieces of fish maw which were soft and spongy like tofu, quail’s egg, pork blood cubes (done well, no overwhelming iron smell) and mushrooms.

5) Thai dishes – fried soft shell crab, shrimp cakes

Where to get it: Krua Samui

best time to visit betong thailand

We are in Thailand after all! Popular among locals and tourists alike, Krua Samui has a selection of local dishes such as fish/shrimp cakes, tomyum, fried omelette, pad thai, and more. The setting is nice and cosy with an indoor and outdoor dining area, patio and ‘huts’ for more privacy.

Stay tuned for more detailed updates of each of these places! 🙂

Very good article. Never heard of Betong before but looks an interesting place.

Thank you! It’s a small, charming place. Great for idyllic retreats rather than the hustle and bustle of big cities.

Betong Thailand Sea Of Clouds and Skywalk

  • Thailand - Betong

Everyone are pretty excited when the news of Malaysia Thailand border is opening in April 2022. However, we are still waiting for the full updates of the Malaysia Thailand border standard operating procedure (SOP). We know there are many Malaysians plan to visit Betong when the border reopens and hence we write about this. This is the Betong Sea of Clouds and the new Skywalk.

betong skywalk 2022

Before pandemic, many Malaysians visit Betong for their chicken. We are talking about real chicken and we actually went to the chicken farm in Betong a few years back.

Betong is the border town in the province of Yala and it is cooling like Cameron Highlands at certain times of the year.

Many travelers visit Betong for food, shopping and relax including our parents. On top of that, there are durian season during the middle of the year and you can check that out too in the future.

For those who are familiar with Betong, they should have visited Iyerweng, the sea of clouds. It is around less than an hour drive from the town depending on the traffic and crowds.

betong sea of clouds 2022

The best time to visit is around 5 am before the crowd and you can get good spot for the photos. We took the DJI Spark drone to take some aerial shots back then.

Iyerweng was really crowded as we went there few years ago and most of the people there are locals and not tourists.

During the pandemic, the local government built the Skywalk and it is the longest in ASEAN. While we are stuck in Malaysia, we managed to get some photos from our parents who went recently.

The Worst Times to Visit Thailand

Avoiding the hot season if possible.

Thailand's hot season, from April to June, brings soaring temperatures and intense humidity, peaking in April and May at over 40°C (104°F). If you're not a fan of the heat, be sure to avoid those months.

Tips for Travelling during the Hot Season:

  • Explore northern regions like Chiang Mai, where the climate is generally cooler compared to the southern parts of the country.
  • Engage in water-based activities to cool off, such as visiting coastal areas or islands.

Avoiding the Rainy Season If Possible

While the rainy season (July to October) graces Thailand with lush landscapes, it also brings short afternoon showers and potential disruptions due to monsoons and storms.

However, you can revel in the perks of serene locales with fewer crowds and attractive prices.

Tips for Travelling the Rainy Season:

  • Explore eastern and northern regions during the rainy season, as they typically receive less rainfall compared to the southern areas.
  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan indoor activities on days when rain is expected.
  • Consider the sun-kissed beauty of Bali as a radiant alternative when Thailand is drenched in rain.

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 20–30°C (68–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–35°C (82–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 28–34°C (82–93°F)

March is still a fabulous month to visit Thailand, especially in the first half of the month, though it starts to heat up in March. It's advisable to stay hydrated, especially in the central region with warmer temperatures.

During this season, you can go literally anywhere in Thailand thanks to the low rainfall. Water-related activities in the southern islands are enjoyable.

Thailand Weather in April: Hottest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–35°C (77–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (86–97°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

April is the hottest month in Thailand. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day and night!

The heat in Chiang Mai during April gets even more oppressive than in Bangkok. Chiang Rai is slightly cooler by 1 or 2°C but is still hot nonetheless.

For beach lovers, you are almost guaranteed some blue skies and clear seas. Staying in a beach resort will be at least 4 or 5°C cooler than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Festivals and Events

Thai New Year (Songkran Festival) is the biggest, longest, and most enjoyable festival in Thailand. It is a 3-day-long water fight that takes place throughout the country!

Suggested read: Thailand in April: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in May: The Rains Start

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 31–36°C (88–97°F)

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

May sees the end of the high season, which means that prices on hotels and flights begin to drop, bringing great value for visitors.

Thailand Weather in June: Wet and Hot

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–38°C (82–100°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (84–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Thailand can expect an average of 15 to 22 days of rain in June. However, the rain is usually short-lived, occurring in short bursts in the afternoon or evening.

This tourism low season is the best time to travel to Thailand for prices and quietness, with more choices of accommodation and various different promotions.

For beachgoers, Ko Samui and Hua Hin are the best destinations as they are not so affected by the rains at this time.

Suggested read: Thailand in June: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in July: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–36°C (82–97°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–34°C (82–93°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–32°C (81–89°F)

July experiences heavy rainfall, so be prepared for wet conditions.

The southern islands are affected by the monsoon in July, which brings heavy rains and turbulent waves to the west coast.

However, the east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, etc) experiences fewer showers during this season and has relatively good weather in July. You can still enjoy sunny days at the beach on these islands.

Some urban areas, such as Bangkok, remain hot and wet. Staying refreshed with indoor swimming pool visits and cold showers will help relieve any discomfort.

Suggested read: Thailand in July: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in August: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 27–35°C (81–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Like July, August is one of the best times to visit Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Though there are some brief rains, it is much better than the other side of the peninsula in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, and the Phi Phi Islands.

A trip to Thailand in August can be a cost-effective opportunity to enjoy scenic spots and quiet beaches without the crowds.

Suggested read: Thailand in August: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in September: Wettest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 26–32°C (79–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–31°C (79–88°F)

September is the wettest month in Thailand. But actually, only some rural areas are significantly affected by the rains during the wet season, such as the mountainous north around Chiang Mai.

Destinations like Bangkok offer travelers plenty to do and see, even when it's raining outside. Koh Samui is recommended for beach holidays in September as it is less affected by the rains.

Rains do not disrupt the travel experience too much for some, as it seldom rains all day long.

Suggested read: Thailand in September: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in October: End of the Rains

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 22–30°C (72–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 24–31°C (75–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 25–30°C (77–86°F)

Thailand experiences high or very high rainfall again in October, except in Northern Thailand where the rainy season already tails off to moderate levels.

The monsoon rain eases off with less rainfall and lower temperatures by the end of October in most of Thailand. However, Koh Samui begins its peak rainy season at this time.

Some visitors come to Thailand at the end of October to wait for the annual grand Thailand Lantern Festival in early November. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the main venues.

Suggested read: Thailand in October: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in November: Peak Season Starts

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 18–28°C (64–82°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 23–30°C (73–86°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 24–30°C (75–86°F)

Thailand's peak travel season starts from November. The rains and heat are gone or going from most of the country.

You can venture out without any worries of getting drenched, EXCEPT on the east coast, which receives a massive half a meter of rain in November.

Islands on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Similan Islands, etc.) are ideal places to go, by contrast, with only moderate rainfall.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with low rainfall, are the most popular cities in November for the Thailand Lantern Festivals .

Suggested read: Thailand in November: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in December: Coolest

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

December is a great time to visit most areas in Thailand (Koh Samui is still in rainy season though) and is also the country's busiest month for tourism.

There are celebrations on Christmas and New Year's Eve in Thailand. Shopping malls in Thailand have big sales from late December to early January. If you're planning a trip to Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, try to book as early as possible. Popular hotels are usually booked up 3-6 months in advance.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Betong: Thailand’s Southernmost Everything

Workers maintain Chinese lanterns inside of The Betong Mongkollit Tunnel (อุโมงค์เบตงมงคลฤทธิ์) on February 4, 2022.

Photographs + Story by: Matt Hunt

Ask around, and most Betong (เบตง) locals will proudly tell you that their city is the southernmost of many things in Thailand. Betong town is the capital of the Betong District and the southernmost town in Yala, the southernmost province in the Kingdom.

In early 2022, after years of issues with construction and contracts, the Betong International Airport (BTZ) opened , giving new attention to Betong as a domestic tourism option. Before the current spotlight in the Thai tourism market, Betong spent decades growing from being a just border town to a destination for Malaysian tourists and business people stopping over before continuing on Highway 410, the one road leading to the rest of Thailand.

The push to make Betong look more like a destination for western tourists is already underway, with murals made for Instagram popping up along the alleyways and a couple of options for “western” food being penciled into menus around the town.

However, daily life in Betong is barely affected by the impending development. The way of motor traffic depends on a lot of independent decision-making; business opens late and closes early; at any given time, you can overhear one of several Thai and Chinese language dialects being spoken interchangeably on the street without hesitation.

Traffic around the clock tower in downtown Betong.

The history of Malaysian tourism and the development of the deep south region of Thailand created a unique mix of Chinese, Malaysian, and Southern Thai cultures that are all on display together—but separately—at the same time.

Betong is a mix of people with vastly different cultural heritage that share a Thai national identity. Most people cooperate with the difference and practice tolerance in ways that demonstrate an understanding of each other as Thai people while maintaining a public, somewhat prideful display of individual identity, keeping their cultural heritage visible and intact.

Betong is ornate mosques on the same block as a Buddhist temple; vendors wearing hijabs making Halal food next to Chinese fried noodle stalls. It is a place where details of many different cultures are splashed throughout the city in blocks of color and food that stand next to each other but barely ever blend.

The following photographs were taken in February 2022, one month before Betong International Airport opened and the area began to be promoted as a tourist destination in domestic and international markets.
