Parnashala This is supposed to be the exact spot where Rama, during his vanavasa in Dandakaranya, constructed a hermitage and spent his exile with his concert Sita and brother Laxmana. Agastya had selected this spot for Rama and is about 35KMs from Bhadrachalam.

The picturesque display of some scenes of vanavasa could be seen at Parnashala. One can see the foot prints of Sita devi, Mosaic of Maarecha in the guise of golden deer and Ravana in the guise of Sanyasi for Bhikshatana. Also found in the vicinity are Sita Vaagu-where she had bathed and collected the turmeric and Kunkum from near by stones and the marks of her saree on the rock near Sita Vaagu. These are all the visiting places for the piligrims.

As Ravana kidnapped Sita, the deity at Parnashala is called Sokarama. The tracks of the chariot of Ravana while kidnapping sita can be seen on the mountain on the other side of the river bank at Parnashala temple.

Jattayu Paaka (Yetapaka)

This Place is situated from 2Kms away from Bhadrachalam. According to Itihasas, the bird Jatayuvu, a devotee of Rama had obstructed Ravana while he was proceeding on the chariot after kidnapping Sita. After the fearful battle between Ravana and Jataayuvu, the heavily injured bird had waited at this place in search of Rama. A wing of this bird fell at Rekkapalli, about 55 Kms from here, in V.R. Puram Mandal.

Here Rama is called the Atmarama. The story reveals that Rama killed 14000 demons headed by Kharadeoshana. As the village was said to be built upon the ashes of these demons, the place is named after as Dummugudem.

It is a place 5 Kms away from the sacred town Bhadrachalam, where springs of hot water could be traced on the river bank when we dig a pit at any place in this area. It is believed that the divine trios (Brahma Vishnu Maheswara) had their dips in winter season according to Brahma Purana.

Sree Rama Giri

This place is situated on the bank in the down stream of river Godavari, about 55 Kms from here. The deity of Yoga Rama Temple is on a hill and is named as Ramagiri.

Bhadrachalam Temple Guide – Sita Ramachandraswamy – Timings, Poojas, and History

June 29, 2022 , Sasidhar Darla Leave a Comment Filed Under: Andhra Pradesh Temples Tagged With: Other Temples

Bhadrachalam temple is the abode of Shri Sita Ramachandra Swamy. This temple is in honor of Lord Rama. The temple is on the banks of the Godavari river. It also relates to the life events of Saint Kancharla Gopanna, who was a great devotee of Lord Rama.

What is the history of Bhadrachalam Temple?

According to the history of Bhadrachalam Temple,  Gopanna the Tahasildar of Bhadrachalam (second half of 17th century), used money from government treasury to build this temple, and hence faced imprisonment in a dungeon at Golconda. Lord Rama miraculously gave the Sultan the money spent by Gopanna, after which he released him.

Gopanna then became Bhadrachala Ramadasa and went on to compose innumerable songs in praise of Rama.

Ramadasa heard the news that the villagers of palvoncha paragana were proceeding to witness Jatara at Bhadrachalam. He found the deities in an amazing appearance; and Ramadas then asked the villagers to contribute liberally for the construction of the temple.

So, the villagers appealed to him to spend the revenue collections for the construction of the temple with a promise to repay the amount after harvesting the crops. The Golconda king Tanishah realized the devotional spirit of Ramadas after his imprisonment and took over the charge of temple administration.

Golconda king, Tanishah then realized Ramadas’s devotional spirit and dedication towards Rama, when Rama and Lakshmana repaid 6 lakhs Mohurs in the form of Ramoji and Lakshmoji, the servants of Bhakta Ramadas for the release of their devotee from imprisonment.

Thanisha gave voucher to these divine looking persons who approached him at his house during late night. Then they kept the voucher under the pillow of Gopanna where he was jailed.  Tanishah who woke up the next morning realized that those divine looking persons were none other than Rama and Lakshmana and made arrangements to get release of Gopanna and prayed to forgive him by placing all the Gold Mohurs received previous night at the feet of Gopanna.  But he refused to take back those mohurs except two as a mark of divine significance, and these two coins can still be seen in Bhadrachalam temple.

bhadrachalam temple nearby tourist places

Bhadrachalam temple, popularly known as Lord Sree Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. Situated in the temple town of Bhadrachalam in Khammam district of Telangana, this temple is one of the most important Hindu temples of the region. The area of Bhadrachalam is circumscribed by the Holy river Godavari which enhances the overall charm of this place. Located at a distance of 300 kilometers from the state capital, Hyderabad, Bhadrachalam temple is visited by thousands of devotees every day.

The main attractions of the temple are the grand celebrations that are organised here. The annual Brahmotsavam festival and the Sri Sitarama Thirukalyana Mahotsavam, celebrated on the eve of Rama Navami are the major festivals celebrated in the Bhadrachalam temple. Other important festivals celebrated here include Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Vijayadashami and Vasanthotsavam.

Legend of the Temple

There are several legends associated with the Bhadrachalam temple, one of them suggests that the significance of this temple dates back to the Ramayana Era. It is believed that Lord Rama with his consort Sita and brother Lakshama spent some time at Parnasala, a village near Bhadrachalam temple during their 14 years of exile. This is also the same place where Sita was abducted by Ravana. A Rishi named Bhadra who used to live there was a great devotee of Lord Rama. Overwhelmed with his devotion, Lord Rama promised him moksha but never managed to make good on his promise during the Ramavataram. But Bhadra continued his penance on the banks of the Godavari River which pleased Lord Vishnu and he appeared before Bhadra in the form of Rama. Lord Vishnu came with the intention of giving him moksha. He appeared with his four celestial arms. He was holding Shankha and Sudarshan chakra in upper arms and a bow and an arrow in the lower hands. While Sita was sitting on his left thigh, his brother Lakshmana was standing to his left. Rama granted him salvation and turned him into a hillock which is now referred to as Bhadradri. This form of Rama came to be known as Vaikuntha Rama and Rama Narayana (the union of Rama and Vishnu).

The Bhadrachalam temple has the idols of the Vaikuntha Rama with a bow and a conch, depicting both Lord Vishnu and Lord Rama at the same time. The idol of Sita sitting on the lap of Lord Rama is a rare sight.

Another myth related to the Bhadrachalam temple is about Pokala Dhammaka, a tribal woman who was a passionate devotee of Lord Rama. According to folklore, one night Lord Rama appeared in her dream and told her about the idols that existed on the Bhadragiri hills. The next day, she went there and found the idols inside an anthill. She poured countless number of pots of Godavari water over the anthill to uncover the idols. She started worshipping the deities there and one day Lord Rama told her that a temple will be constructed at this very site by one of his devotees. That devotee was Bhakta Ramadas who constructed the Bhadrachalam temple in the year 1674 A.D.

Architecture of the Bhadrachalam Temple

The magnificent architecture of the Bhadrachalam temple will leave you enchanted. The temple has four entrances and the temple complex is divided into three parts. The first part is a temple dedicated to the head of Bhadra. Inside this temple, there is a rock structure of Bhadra’s head. This structure has a footprint on it which is believed to be that of Lord Rama’s. The second part is a shrine where the presiding deity of the temple resides and the third is the main tower or rajagopuram located at Bhadra’s feet.

On the top of the shrine or the sanctum, a Sudarshana Chakra is engraved. Gopanna found this eight-faced chakra with thousand corners in the Godavari river. The idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are seated to the right of the sanctum. These idols are worshipped every day. A gold plated flag post or dwajasthambam can be seen right opposite the sanctum. Made up of panchaloha, the flag contains images of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.
