Porto, Aveiro,Lisbon

8 days − self guided, 3 & 4* hotels & country inns.

Ride alongside the Portuguese northern coast to arrive in Lisbon!

This self-guided bike tour is a beautiful journey down the Portuguese shoreline and visiting many cultural and historic sites. It links two of the main cities in Portugal, Porto, and its vibrant capital, Lisbon and many seaside places like Figueira da Foz and Óbidos, the walled town.

Enjoy Porto, a Unesco World Heritage City in Western Europe and learn about its famous wine and gastronomy, experience Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, and arrive in Lisbon, a city that has served as inspiration for many artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers through the ages.

Admire its brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, striking ochre roofs, tile-covered building facades and narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts.  It is one of Europe’s finest capital cities and a great achievement to cycle to!

This was our second bike tour with Cycling Country and Portugal did not disappoint. Thank you again.”

Birmingham, England

Day 1. PORTO ARRIVAL

Arrive into Porto  and to your hotel in this historic and fascinating city. Creating a bit of a buzz for itself, Porto has become a popular cultural place and you will enjoy your day exploring the Ribeira , the medieval centre and its many interesting buildings, cafes, galleries and shops. Gof for a walk riverside, seeing the Eiffel bridge or over to the Port Wine lodges on the southern bank, but be careful on your way home! Don’t over enjoy those lodges. A UNESCO Heritage city, you will be spoiled for choice here for what to do and that is true especially so for dinner, as the city has many fine Portuguese spots to dine.

Day 2. PORTO TO FURADOURO

Ride: 42 km | Elevation Gain: 77 m It is always nice to get out of the big city and your cycle today is a nice flat one, in which you will just fly along. Via many small towns hugging the coast with Umbrella fir trees and sandy beaches it is a pleasant ride. Heading towards Furadouro , surrounded by pine forests, you will enjoy this quiet ride and the town itself is a good base for the night.

Day 3. FURADOURO TO AVEIRO

Ride: 40 km | Elevation Gain: 40 m Another great day of flat cycling and through the nice Natural Reserve of Sao Jacinto with a small boat transfer. Aveiro is a popular day trip from Porto and it known as the Portuguese Venice with so many inlets and canals with brightly hand painted colourful boats called Moliceiro , used for collecting seaweed bobbing in the marinas. A thriving port through the Middle Ages due to vast sea salt pans which supplied the entire country, you still can visit these salt dunes today and soak in these medicinal properties. Very handsome pastel coloured homes line the streets and the old town is pretty around the fish market. Homes there are attractively tiled in those famous Portuguese Azulejos and there are some very nice examples of Art Nouveau in the town. You might want to try (or not!!) the town’s specialty of eels which are from the town’s lagoon.

Day 4. AVEIRO TO FIGEIRA DA FOZ

Ride: 35 km | Elevation Gain: 124 m A little bit harder cycling day today on your way to Lisbon with a small climb near the end of the day, but a lovely cycle nevertheless. You leave along the canal and reach the town of Mira and its quaint beachside fishing village. The fishing boats are very pretty with their curved bows, reminders of a Phoenician past and the villages along this coast was only settled in the 19th century due to piracy threats onwards from the Vikings.. The coast is long and impressive and stretches for miles here and you can have some marvellous seafood whilst you wait for your transfer to Figueira da Foz . Based on the Rio Mondego, it is a popular place for tourists due to its huge beach and has a lively atmosphere with its many outdoor plazas of cafes and restaurants.

Day 5. TO NAZARÉ

Ride: 81 km | Elevation Gain: 533 m This is a wonderful ride today (although your biggest day yet) along the sparkling Atlantic coast, and via what was the Pinhal de Leira pine forest . This  “Royal Pine Forest” track was originally built in the 14th century by King Dinis, known as the farmer king, in order to build a barrier to the encroaching beach sands. It is a nice area of wildlife and an air infused with pine and sea saltiness.  It is growing back after forest fires of years past but still a pleasant area to cycle. Today’s rolling route follows the Atlantic Road, designated cycling route, past the sentinel lighthouses through the Costa da Prata (Silver coast) to Nazaré , Portugal’s famous fishing town but one now most known for the massive waves that International surfers make their names on. Incredible views of the goliaths that come storming in, is from the upper part of town at the lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic. Try a fish dinner tonight, as it won’t come fresher than those served here.

Day 6. TO ÓBIDOS

Ride: 48 km | Elevation Gain: 460 m This is an exciting day of cycling starting along the Atlantic coast with a more touristic bent included. There is some climbing to do today but it is a charming route with beautiful vistas. You continue inland to medieval Óbidos , with a most enchanting blue and white tiled entrance, the Porta da Vila, through its solid fortified walls. The narrow winding cobbled streets lead up to the beautiful castle with its lovely rounded turrets. The village itself is delightful with flower pots spilling out of windows and bright colours on white-washed walls. In medieval times this place was so loved by the wife of King Dinis, that he gifted it to her. We hope you will feel the same way!

Day 7. LISBOA!

Get up early to wander this atmospheric place of Óbidos before your 11am transfer into the Capital city of Lisbon which rests on the Tagus river. One of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting places appealing to all with its romantic Alfama hillside district where the houses rest on top of each other in a most photogenic way and the modern day “medieval” castle tops it. The sights are many in this lovely city of World War II intrigue, medieval legends, art galleries galore and museums for everyone and without doubt, some world class food opportunities. Catch a tram over to the district of Belem and enjoy the stupendous UNESCO Heritage sites of the Jeronimos Monastery and 16th century Belem Tower the launch marker from which many Portuguese explorers left. Wander over and get a delicious Pastel de nata, cream tart, a real Portuguese favourite and perhaps visit the botanical gardens or even intriguing Carriage museum. This full day doesn’t even factor in, enjoying late night Fado music , a true cultural treat of this city!

Day 8. LISBON TO LISBON AIRPORT

We hate to say goodbye, and so will you for leaving this place really is a heartbreak. Or don’t stop and join us on our guided tour of the beautiful and traditional Alentejo area or keep self guiding all the way down the Blue Coast to the Algarve ! The choices are endless. Boa Viagem and we hope you enjoyed your trip down the West Coast!

Cycling In Portugal, Aveiro Hotel

“The end of our trip was great. We especially liked Obidos and our hotel. Our bikes worked well and were dependable. We really did enjoy the trip and we will return to Portugal in the future.” J. Palo – Oregon, USA – October 2023
“The trip was very good. The hotels and staff were all helpful. The hybrids were excellent. Pick up of goods/us all went smoothly. Good choice of hotels and a very interesting trip. Just too short! PS: The first day I discovered I had left my laptop in Porto. We had biked for about 45 minutes towards the next stop, but I turned around to go back to the hotel to get it. So my first day was not quite as relaxed as I’d hoped! Anyway at least it was a beautiful ride despite my memory loss… Thanks again for your help Maria. We’d like to do something like this again.” B. Jones – British Columbia, Canada – March 2023
“My wife and I really enjoyed our Porto to Lisbon bike tour- a great way to see Portugal’s coast and explore some great cities like Aveiro. Well organized, good equipment, and lovely hotels. We had good weather in mid-October.” T. Gainer – Portland, OR, USA – October 2021
“Amazing experience! My husband and I are back from our biking trip in Portugal with a suitcase full of wonderful memories. I would like to thank Cycling Country for the amazing organization that they provided to make our trip go as smoothly as it did. The bikes were very comfortable and in great condition (thank you for the special Dutch-style bikes – they were great!) and well equipped with emergency tools. They really thought of everything we might need along the road. The “Ride with GPS” navigation was very easy to follow and had lots of interesting tips and useful information. Also the hotels were all very nice and in great locations. In addition, the support we received before and during the trip was first class. Above all, the scenery was fantastic and the trails very varied along the coast, through beautiful parks and interesting places. I highly recommend both the trip and Cycling Country as the organizers.” E. Brager – Bethesda, MA, USA – September 2021
“Self-guided Porto to Lisbon tour – Great experience and very well organized! The selection of cities/towns and routes through Portugal’s central coast is varied and interesting. The route was not very challenging (mostly flat) and great for those who want a laid back ride, and kept us off main roads ( love not having to negotiate much car traffic!). Cycling Country was reliable, friendly and accommodating with good attention to detail. Hotels were solid, with some nice touches, like a few with spa amenities. We were especially grateful for their help with finding places for Covid tests for our return flight to the US. Our flight got canceled and they graciously made accommodations for us, much appreciated!” T. Eggers – Piedmont, CA, USA – July 2021

A Brief Pedro’s History

In 1989, roommates Bruce Fina and Andrew Herrick founded the Pedro’s brand around a revolutionary chain lube called Syn Lube  developed by Bruce’s tribologist brother. Friends of Bruce and Andrew were living and racing mountain bikes in the Pacific Northwest and couldn’t find a lube that would last an entire race in the muddy conditions. The other Teflon-based chain lubes couldn’t handle the mud. Formulated with extreme pressure additives, corrosion inhibitors, and tackifiers to provide incredible wear protection, lubrication, and staying power in extreme wet and muddy conditions, Syn Lube quickly became the lube of choice. Once mountain bikers tried Syn Lube and experienced its performance, word spread, demand skyrocketed, and the Pedro’s brand was officially off to the races!

With the mountain bike boom of the 90’s, the New England based Pedro’s grew quickly over the next six years introducing Syn Grease, Syn Lube Road, Bio Degreaser, Bike Lust polish, Extra Dry lube, Oranj Peelz degreaser, and a small line of accessories made from recycled plastics including the Milk levers, Milk Cage, and grips. The brand also launched its famous grassroots support program, racing service program, and mountain bike festival. The brand’s roots in cycling had been firmly planted and a cult following ensued. People loved Pedro’s for its customer focus, grassroots support, easy-going nature, and growing line of eco friendly products.

By 2000, Pedro’s added a complete line of professional grade tools uniquely positioning itself as a complete bicycle maintenance brand. The additional products further supported the grassroots program and Pedro’s Racing Service and Pedro’s supported as many as 375 grassroots riders and 60 events each year.

Today, our small team proudly carries on the Pedro’s traditions of customer focus, grassroots support, and easy-going attitude while continuing to offer innovative, quality tools that last, and safe, high performance bike care that keep your bike running right, so you enjoy every ride.

How to Visit Valle de la Luna on a Bike (A Painful Ride)

Valle de la luna viewpoint atacama desert

In this travel guide, we will share our day exploring Valle de la Luna on a bike. It turned out to be quite the painful day, but biking around the Atacama desert is still one of our fondest travel memories from Chile.

So because of the love we have for this desert, we’ve decided to make this blog post rather long for two reasons:

1) We want to show you how you can easily visit Valle de la Luna on a bike, 2) We also want to share our story (of the rather painful ride), which includes all the great things you can see in this incredible desert!

The Atacama Desert is such a wonderful place on earth that has so much to offer such as geysers, llamas and a lovely town called San Pedro.

Together with our day sandboarding in the Atacama desert , this bike trip to Valle de la Luna is definitely one of our best memories from Chile. Both of these days were pretty painful on the body, but(t) more about that later. Now let’s get started!

About Valle de la Luna in Chile

In Valle de la Luna you’ll find massive sand dunes, salt flats, and rock formations.

It’s such a unique and beautiful place on earth, and the landscape actually looks like something from another planet. Wherever you look, you see shades of purple, pink, orange, and gold.

The valley belongs to the Flamencos National Reserve and is located in the Atacama Desert, which is the driest place on earth. Crazy, right? I still get so amazed when I think about the fact that I’ve been biking around the driest place on earth!

  • Related blog post: What is Chile famous for?

Valle de la Luna has an altitude of about 2500 meters above sea level, which means that the days are blazing hot from the sun, but the nights can get pretty cold. So make sure to wear layers if you visit very early in the morning when it’s still cold.

Valle de la Luna is Spanish for “Moon Valley”. It got the name because the desert has similarity to the lunar soil.

Apparently NASA also ran tests in Valle de la Luna because the valley’s environment is similar to Mars. The rover (this machine-driven-instrument-thing that looks like a robot) is doing its test runs here to see if it can drive, drill and detect life. Pretty cool!

Valle de la luna is the driest place on earth

Valle de la Luna opening hours & entrance fee 2024

  • Opening hours Summer 2024: 9 AM – 5 PM
  • Opening hours Winter 2024: 8 AM – 5 PM
  • Ticket prices 2024: 10800 CLP for adults

Valle de la Luna’s information center is located only 5,5 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama by bike. So it’s easy to get there by yourself. From the information centre there are only a few more kilometers to the beginning of the valley.

The information centre is where you buy your tickets to “the moon”.

You can also use the toilets and fill up on some drinks and snacks. Although, we don’t know when their little shop/café is open. So make sure to bring a lot of water and your own lunch if you visit early in the morning.

If you’re not sure about biking through the driest place on earth, then you can also easily join a tour to Valle de la Luna .

Where to rent a bike in San Pedro de Atacama

There are several places to rent a bike in San Pedro de Atacama. Just walk down the streets and you’ll notice that practically all the shops are willing to rent you a bike.

Take my advice, pay some extra money and get a good mountain bike. Once you get into the desert, you are literally biking on dusty, sandy, gravel roads.

We rented bikes from our hostel for 5000 CLP a piece for a whole day. The prices for bike rental in San Pedro should be around that price or maybe a bit more for a good bike.

Other ways to see Valle de la Luna

Let’s be honest. Not everyone is into spending a full day sweating on a bike.

So, if you’re still considering whether you should go to Valle de la Luna on bike or not – just know that there are other ways to visit the park. You can also rent your own car and drive around the valley, or you can join one of the many tours to Valle de La Luna.

Since we visited on bikes, we never got to do any tours. However, if I was to go again, I would join this Valle de La Luna afternoon tour where a local guide takes you around the valley before you go somewhere magnificent to watch the sunset.

Our bike story / Things to see in Valle de la Luna

Now the fun begins! I’m going to share mine and Glenn’s story biking through Valle de la Luna.

It’s a tale full of sand dunes, desert dogs, and blistering bums. Now let’s get started!

1. Getting ready for the adventure

It was 7 AM when our alarms went off. I jumped in the shower half groggy and half excited. Time to wake up! What better way than with a cold shower in the desert?

Then it was time to wake up Glenn. He got in late last night, so I knew he’d been up late-night-drinking with some hostel buddies. But today was the day that we would finally go into the desert and explore! So not even small hangovers could ruin the mood.

We had our breakfast, rented 2 bikes from our hostel and started biking around San Pedro de Atacama in search for lunch. We stopped at a little café and got some empanadas for the trip. There is nothing better than eating empanadas while you’re in Chile. They’re so good!

Anyways, we were finally ready to venture into the desert. So we got onto our bikes and starting riding towards Valle de la Luna.

2. Meet the desert Dogs

While we were biking through the empty desert landscapes, two stray dogs all of a sudden came out of nowhere.

Oh no, they were chasing us on our bikes!

First I got a bit startled, but then I realized that they were just playing with us. So we decided to bring them along as our companions for the day. I’m a big dog lover, so adding a few happy dogs to our day in the desert, could only make the trip better.

Valle de la Luna by bike in San pedro de atacama

3. Valle de la Luna Information Center

The bike trip from San Pedro to Valle de la Luna’s information center only took us about half an hour.

We parked our bikes and told our two new companions to wait outside while we got the tickets.

The staff in the visitor center were really nice to us. We bought our tickets for 2500 CLP each and checked in by writing our names into their visitor book.

The dogs were still trying to catch their breath outside after running next to our bikes, so I decided to give them some of my water… Okay they almost got the whole bottle. I didn’t really think about the fact that I might need it for later since I’m only going to bike around the driest place on earth… No biggie, who needs water for that?

We jumped back on our bikes and continued the journey into Valle de la Luna.

4. Biking through Valle de la Luna

I don’t think I’ll ever will bike through a place this extraordinary again. It was just amazing.

The landscape kept on changing, we really felt like we were on another planet. Watching the pictures, I still cannot believe that a place on earth looks like this!

The dogs were still following us as we entered the Moon Valley (that funnily enough looks exactly how I imagine the moon) with our bikes. This is when the bike trip started to get tricky.

The road is basically sand, dirt, dust and gravel, and it’s pretty bumpy. This is when I realized that I had a horrible bike. Auch! This was going to be a long day for my bum.

5. Duna Mayor

We made it to the big and impressive sand dune: Duna Mayor. We parked our bikes next to a few other bikes in the parking lot and started walking only to realize that the dogs had stopped following us.

Apparently they were resting in the shadows by the toilets in the parking lot. I can’t blame them. They’ve been running around and playing in the hot Atacama desert.

So we left them behind and started hiking up a sand dune from where we would be able to see the massive Duna Mayor.

Oh my, it’s so hard to walk in sand! My feet just kept on sinking in, so every step I took up the hill felt like a victory. I never realized how big a workout this day trip would actually be, but I knew it would be worth it.

When we got to the top, Glenn needed a break. He finally admitted he was a bit hungover from yesterday. Honestly, I was just happy not to be the only one in misery…

So we were both feeling a little bit down, him with his drinking yesterday and me with my sore bum. On top of that, it really started to get HOT in the desert.

But let’s look at the positives, I’ve had worst places to take a break! It was my first time on top of a sand dune and the views were just breathtaking! So many desert landscapes in beautiful shades of pink, purple, orange and gold.

It was time for pictures and empanadas.

Duno Mayor: The big sand dune in Valle de la luna

6. The salt flats

We returned from the massive sand dune and got on our bikes again. Next stop was the salt flats.

We kept on biking through the ever-changing landscapes in Valle de la Luna. Nothing looked the same! Except for all the sand everywhere…

Apparently there is a lot to see on the way, but since we were on a DIY trip, we didn’t really know when we reached the popular things. At the information center they have a big map over the valley, where you can see the names of all the rock formations.

Anyways, we finally made it to the salt flats. The salt flats in Valle de la Luna is nothing compared to the salt flats in Bolivia , but it was still nice to see yet another different landscape.

7. A painful bike ride home

After spending some time at Chile’s salt flats, we got back on our bikes. But this time I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was in so much pain. And I was also super thirsty since I had given most of my water to the desert dogs… oops.

I’m usually tougher than this, but at this point I was just miserable. My whole “downtown” area was just in pain from the hard saddle and the bumpy road. I just couldn’t do it anymore.

Knowing that we’d been driving 10+ kilometers already and still had the same amount left on our return ride made me cry inside (I couldn’t waste any water going out of my body, had to stay hydrated). So I had to come up with a solution. I put a scarf in my pants like a build-in cushion and I took Glenn’s shirt and wrapped it around my seat.

Aaaah so much better, yet still painful from being so sore.

I think my BEST tip for anyone who wants to go to Valle de la Luna by bike is to get a proper mountain bike! It’s really sad to be in such a wonderful place and not enjoy it as much as you should because you’re in pain.

Valle de la luna hike

8. Buying all the drinks at the visitor center

We started our return ride from Valle de la Luna to the visitor, and it probably took us double the time it normally would have. I was constantly battling whether to bike so I could get faster back to the visitor center and get a cold drink, or whether to walk and not feel any pain. I constantly jumped on and off the bike… As you can hear, Glenn is a very patient man.

Either way, we eventually made it back to the visitor center again.

Both of us were so thirsty from bicycling around the Atacama desert. So we bought all their drinks. Literally. We bought water, gatorade, fanta, cola… Just because we were so thirsty and wanted it all. Normally I only drink water, but today I just wanted the sugar. I went for the good stuff!

We were both so happy to make it this far. Being hydrated again really brightened the mood, so even though we still had to bike 5,5 kilometers back to San Pedro, our spirits were much higher!

buying drinks at the valle de la luna visitor centre

9. “Wait, is that a tornado?”

On the way back to San Pedro, we could see the weather was acting up. It was going to be rainy and stormy.

While riding our bikes, we all of a sudden noticed something that looked like a big dusty cloud far away. I didn’t realize it then, but that was actually a mini tornado. How cool is that?

Keep your eyes open while biking in Atacama, you never know what you might see in the desert!

Luckily, we got back to San Pedro before the bad weather rolled in. Apart from my sore bum, we had a pretty successful day in the desert, so we celebrated with an ice cold beer!

Final comments on biking Valle de la Luna

I know I’ve been complaining a lot in this blog post… But biking around the driest place on earth is just one of those memories that will last for a long time. So I 100% recommend you to do it.

So please consider jumping on a bike when visiting Valle de la Luna, it’s such a great way to explore, plus it’s good for your health!

All in all, it was super easy to rent a bike and find our way to Valle de la Luna, and on top of that, we mostly had the place to ourselves.

The only thing we missed on this trip was watching the beautiful sunset in the valley, but you need to join a tour for that. So that’s luckily something we can look forward to for our next visit to this amazing place in Chile.

Great post! Chile has been on my list for awhile. Would love to go biking around there. Looks like so much fun. Pinning so I have this guide when I make it there.

This looks like such a incredible place to cycle – but you poor thing for being in such pain! I know the feeling. It always takes me a few weeks to get used to my bike saddle in the spring, even though I wear padded shorts. A new bike seat for a long day in the saddle must have been tough.

The scenery in the valle de la Luna (and meeting those dogs) makes it sound like a day to remember!

Oh my, what an adventure! I’ve also been cycling in the heat before and it’s rough! Those views seem worth the pain though!

Grab your sunglasses (if you can find them?!) and pack some sunscreen. Come with us to escape the early-spring and winter weather blahs – the sun shines 354 days a year here! Soak up some vitamin D where the Mojave meets the Colorado Desert as you keep your cycling legs warm for summer. Even better, there’s a lot of diversity and beauty to explore in the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs region. Marvel at desert sculptures, spring wildflowers, and “forests” of creosote bush and ocotillo near Borrego Springs. Sample delicious local dates as you spin alongside the Salton Sea and visit “the last free place in America” – Slab City. Pedal through historic and trendy Palm Springs and hike to a palm oasis held sacred by native residents for centuries. Ultimately, explore Joshua Tree National Park. This kingdom of golden rock outcroppings and eponymous tree-like succulents combine to form a backdrop unlike anywhere else on our planet. Last, but not least… don’t forget to take a refreshing dip in the resort pool or relax under a palm with a good book!

Borrego Springs: Cycle through badlands to viewpoints in the surrounding hills and wend your way through an open air art gallery in the desert.

Borrego Springs Resort and Spa, or Borrego Valley Inn

Flat ride: 38 miles Hilly ride: 43 miles

Flat ride: +868 ft / -1,204 ft Hilly ride: +2,708 ft / -2,620 ft

Borrego Springs is the only town in California that is surrounded by a State Park. Artsy, unpretentious, historic, charming, and tiny (pop. 3500), it is nestled within Anza Borrego State Park. To the west, steep desert mountains rise against a foreground of fiery ocotillo blossoms. Colorful but formidable badlands guard the way to the Salton Sea to the east. In between, the desert is dotted with the fascinating sculptures of Ricardo Breceda. In 1776 the park’s namesake, Juan Bautista de Anza, led 240 soldiers and colonists (over half were children) along with some 1,000 livestock through the valley on an epic journey northward from Mexico, eventually establishing present-day San Francisco. Savor gorgeous views as you cruise up into the hills on a more difficult route or tour the valley and more of the sculptures on a flatter ride. Study the starlit skies from Borrego Springs Resort and Spa or the Borrego Valley Inn tonight.

Pedal along the Salton Sea, an "accidental" lake with depths rivaling Death Valley's lowest point. Visit Slab City, Salvation Mountain and Bombay Beach.

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Azure Palm Hot Springs Resort

+227 ft / -291 ft

Shuttle to Niland, CA after breakfast. Take a short drive – trust us, you don’t want to ride on this road! – to Slab City, a bizarre off-the-grid encampment that has been dubbed “the last free place on earth.” Folks here live alternative lifestyles in the desert on “slabs” (concrete platforms) left over from an abandoned WWII military base. While we are out there, we will make a quick pilgrimage to Salvation Mountain as well – a modern masterpiece of desert folk art made of concrete and adobe adorned with colorful paint and religious messages – recognized by the US Senate as a national treasure. Pedal through open desert along the Salton Sea – a lake with depths rivaling Death Valley’s lowest point and a salinity greater than the Pacific Ocean. Bordered by quirky boom/bust towns, like Bombay Beach, and once part of a vast inland sea, it is now the largest lake in California. After lunch we shuttle to Azure Palm Hot Springs Resort for the next three nights.

Joshua Tree National Park: Ride past its namesake trees. Count cactus varieties and maybe spot a jackrabbit or desert bighorn sheep.

– Breakfast – Lunch

34 miles (up to 45 miles)

+2,110 ft / -2,862 ft (or more)

Welcome to “unearthly” Joshua Tree National Park! Ride past its namesake trees, count cactus varieties and maybe spot a jackrabbit or desert bighorn sheep. Marvel at the twisted, spiky trees straight out of a Dr. Seuss illustration at the junction of three of California’s ecosystems: the Colorado Desert, the Mojave Desert, and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Check out the geologic formations that make this a favored destination for rock-climbers and the hundreds of plant and animal species that make them their home. An optional climb is available for those that want some altitude and a good view of the Salton Sea from above. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Return to Joshua Tree National Park. Keep an eye out for wildflowers, roadrunners and desert tortoises!

53 miles (or less)

+1,928 ft / -5,398 ft (or less)

One day is not enough to see the diversity here, so we return to Joshua Tree to enjoy a ride out through the south end of the park today. Stop for a walk through one of the most prolific cholla (cactus) gardens in the southwest and pay homage to some truly massive palm trees. Keep an eye out for desert tortoises and wildflowers as you descend out of the park through beautiful Box Canyon.

Ride through urban Palm Springs and out of town to a palm canyon before we return you to the "real world."

27 mile ride (plus 2.8-mile hike)

+848 ft / -848 ft

Ride through Palm Springs and take a hike through a palm canyon. Home to the rich and famous of the Rat Pack era, the Palm Springs of today boasts the best urban life has to offer. The Rat Pack may have moved on, but the city’s style hasn’t. Palm Springs is as cool as it gets in the middle of a desert. Check out retro architecture, window shopping, sweet cafés, or maybe race a Ferrari off the line at a stoplight before we return you (albeit reluctantly) back to the “real world”.
