Black and White tours made our Gambian experience one to remember <3

Black and White safari tours was recommended by a friend who said her experience with them was great so I took their number before flying out. Myself and my mum contacted them and found Armstrong to be very professional and efficient with his responses. Turns out the office was a short walk from where we were staying (Kololi Beach Hotel) and we met him in person. Setting up the tours was easy and hassle free and Armstrong was super friendly. The 1st tour we took was the 4-wheel drive where we got to really experience some of what Gambia has to offer including a wonderful Gambian lunch and visiting a nursery they help support. Our tour guide was Alex and he was amazing. He really took care of us and made us feel so welcome. He's such a respectful and bubbly tour guide who regularly made us laugh and made the experience for us a fun one! We loved it so much we went on a second tour where we got the see the Gambian river and visit the national reserve park. Both tours were engaging, enjoyable and a wonderful experience overall. Our driver was also lovely and worked hard getting us from place to place all day on both tours. We definitely recommend them! They provide drinks as well during the tour. Special thanks again to Alex, our wonderful tour guide and Armstrong who is doing an excellent job both supporting the community and running a great tour agency.

Our first visit to Gambia was amazing and that’s largely thanks to Black & White Safari! I contacted Armstrong before we left the U.K. and met him at his office on the strip, when we arrived. We decided to book 4 trips, The Safari and lion walk, The 7 sights of Gambia, Roots and The Lazy River Fishing. SALLIF was our amazing guide and we requested his company for all our trips, which Armstrong kindly agreed with. In fact many of our trips included both of them, with Armstrong catching the most fish and agreeing to have a snake wrapped around his neck, which was hilarious! Every trip was brilliant, with everything organised to perfection! We felt safe and relaxed throughout and even ended up booking 2 more trips, The sunset cruise at Lamin Lodge and finally The Reptile Park and Paradise Beach. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart and look forward to returning next year, when we will book many more trips including the 2 day Hippo tour ❤️

Excellent service and well looked after by our guide Lamin. Well organised trip and very informative. Would use again.

We have booked 4 trips, so I will review each one separately to give a true picture. This company, run by Armstrong, is amazing and one I can highly recommend. I would suggest making contact with them before you travel, but they can be easily found on the strip in Kololi. All communication is instant, with Armstrong replying and answering any questions we had. We discussed what we wanted on our first trip to Gambia and his suggestions were perfect! Our first tour was the Safari in Sénégal and to Walk with the Lions. Wow just wow! We were picked up promptly at our hotel and introduced to our guide Sallif. We enjoyed his company and trusted him so much, that Armstrong has kindly allowed Sallif to guide us on all the trips. The ferry crossing, safari and Lion walk went smoothly and were totally amazing. But the important thing is that we felt safe and could rely totally on our guide at all times during the trip. You leave your hotel, drive to the ferry at Banjul and then cross to Barra. That in itself is amazing experience. Then cross the border to Sénégal and on to the nature reserve. Don’t think about just do it! ❤️

After a stop at an orphange we will drive on to Lamin Lodge, where you will have a boat trip in the mangrove to see the nature along the way. The last stop is the forest park, where you will walk and get close to the monkeys.

Black and White are the no-brainer choice for once in a lifetime tours

We signed up for the 6 in one Gambian Experience and Senegal trip - both were truly memorable in different ways. As the other reviews say, Armstrong is super responsive and sets the professional tone for all interactions with Black and White. After a couple of exploratory emails he agreed to meet us at our hotel on our first day. He drove us back to his office off the Senegambia strip and gave us a run through on the trips available. He was keen that we got what we wanted but also presented other options without being pushy. Lamin was our guide for the 6 in 1 tour. This is probably the best tour I have ever been on. Travelling to The Gambia you are visiting a third world country that has a very well organised and sanitised tourist area. It would be super easy to visit The Gambia and enjoy the beaches, the food, the hospitality - which is first grade. However if that is all you do - you will have missed out seeing the real Gambia in all its complexity. Lamin and the tour gave us an insight into the Gambia that would not be possible visiting on your own, nor if you went with a bigger and perhaps more exploitative tour. Black and White are embedded in the community and the community support is core to its purpose. In this way we were able to experience a little of life for real Gambians from walking around the market, visiting a local school and a local family. These visits were sensitively handled and left me feeling I would like to learn more and support these communities. The tour combined some more touristic elements such as visiting the crocodile pool, fishing village or wood carving market - but it is the earlier elements that will stay with us forever. This tour is not to be missed. At times challenging but all the more worthwhile for that. Our trip to the Fathala Wildlife reserve in Senegal was the original reason for us finding Black and White. In this tour, Salif was our guide. This is a more touristic trip but no less enjoyable. The walking with lions is optional - but you should definitely sign up for that as everyone else visiting is doing this. The lions are tamed from birth and well trained. Our initial concerns that they may be drugged was tackled by Armstrong during booking and was confirmed to really NOT be the case during the visit. The man mountain of the lion "tamer" bottle feeds the lions from being cubs and hence he has a strong bond with them. The Banjul-Barra ferry crossing was my favourite part - again getting a chance to see how real Gambians go about their daily business. Top tip - make sure you bring a yellow fever card. The Sengal border guards want to see that yellow paper (we only had an NHS print out of our vaccinations). Salif had to work hard to sort out the issue at the border - and this is where Black and White excel. You are truly in safe hands. As a company they fill the important gap between the local guy on the street outside the hotel offering guiding (which I would recommend for short trips say to the monkey park) and the big organised tours by the likes of TUI affiliates. Black and White give you a personal experience in a small group or just a couple, give you total piece of mind from beginning to end and have professionally trained guides whose local knowledge is second to none. On a side note Gambians have had a very hard time of it of late. COVID wiped out business for everyone and the business is only just starting to come back. in March 2023 it was still pretty quiet - so go visit before it gets back to full popularity. Everyone in the tourist business only get a 6 month season - so the guides end up working in the building trade or going back to their villages to help out on the land in subsistence farming. They need your support now more than ever - so be brave and swerve the big organised tour and have a real adventure with Black and White.

We did two tours with them and they were amazing. Very professional. I organised a large group to do the Safari/ lion walk and the roots tour. Everyone had an amazing time. The team of black and white tours did everything to accommodate everyone and ensuring everyone was ok. I highly recommend them and I will absolutely use them again when I return to Gambia.

We booked the safari day with this company our guide was Alex and he did a great job. We could not recommend this company more, the whole day was great from the chaos of the ferry and the border crossing to seeing all the animals and birds on the actual safari. The guides and drivers were spot on helpful, informative, and fun if it is your first time in Gambia this company is a must. We dealt with Armstrong he was a straight guy everything ran smoothly and safely all the people who work there are local and there knowledge is invaluable. It was a great experience and one we will never forget

Fabulous experience from start to finish. My daughter and myself were met promptly at hotel reception by our friendly guide who, with his driver, took us to a Gambian home where we chose the meal we would like to cook. Dressed in Gambian clothes, making the experience even more authentic, we were taken to the market to purchase the necessary ingredients. Didn’t realise that ingredients are purchased fresh every day as they don’t have facilities to keep them fresh! Back at the family home we prepared the ingredients with guidance from our Gambian family. We helped with the whole process of preparing, cooking on the charcoal fires, cleaning the pots, serving the food and finally sharing the meal with the family. Felt fully immersed in this Gambian experienced and quite humbled by the work needed to prepare the meal. Never will I complain about preparing Sunday dinner at home again!! Brilliant experience and learning opportunity. Thank you Black and White Safari - a memorable day!

As a first time visitor to The Gambia we wanted to do a tour that would be a highlight and a lasting memory. Having read the reviews we contacted Armstrong. The service was exceptional and information informative. We decided to arrange a bespoke trip combining two tours! I would highly recommend this to you. We did an overnight to Senegal which included an authentic safari tour, walking with Lions experience and a sunset boat cruise around the mangroves. Our overnight accommodation was of a very high standard and had a pool for relaxation in the afternoon. The highlight of the tour came on the second day when we did the Roots tour. Anyone who is old enough to remember Roots & the Kunte Kinte story will relate immediately. If before your time get researching. The tour looks at the history of Slavery and the story of Kunte Kinte. Not wanting to steal the thunder of the tour I would simply say this is a MUST on any trip to The Gambia. Our guide Lamin was OUTSTANDING, if you are fortunate to tour with Lamin you are in for areal treat. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Take time to discover Lamin’s story and history!! WE ARE EXTREMELY HAPPY AND PROUD TO PROVIDE THIS REVIEW AND REFERENCE!! As a small aside the fact that you take a tour with Black & White directly helps the local community as the company donates 5% of your tour cost to good local causes.

We done 3 excursions with black and white they are a very professional and well organised company. Our first excursion was to Fathala wildlife reserve which was on Christmas Day and what a experience it was I highly recommend the walking with lions unforgettable, our tour guides name was Lamin and we felt very safe and well informed throughout the whole trip. We also done the lazy fishing day excursion which was so relaxing and the food laid on was amazing and a big thank you to Armstrong the owner of Black and White who came with us on this excursion and what a laugh we had. I highly recommend this company who go out of their way to make you excursions unforgettable.

The Gambia with Black & White Safari

Where to start....? We did 3 trips with Armstrong and his team each and everyone where entirely different and superb, 4 Wheel drive - One word WOW. During the day we saw and did so many different things (apologies Armstrong if I miss something) We got greeted at our hotel bang on time by a team of 4 including Armstrong and set off in one of B & W open top jeeps. Our first stop was the Croc park where we toured the museum and got an in-depth guide/talk by B & W guides. Between the 3 of them we now know the entire history of KACHIKALLY and the crocs they have there...also along the way got to stroke a few crocs :) Next stop was the biggest market in The Gambia - Serrekunda. This is huge...however we were flanked by the B & W team at all times and felt completely safe and at ease. Stopping along the way to admire the different stalls and the general vibe of the place. Next on the list was a stop at a local school which Armstrong has helped over many years too watch and see some local young students sing and dance for us. This was a brilliant experience. On the way to our next stop of Paradise Beech (the best in The Gambia and in my opinion one of the best I've ever been too) for a buffet lunch and a swim in the sea we called in at the wood craft factory. After a few hours at the beech we had a short drive to a local compound to a walk around a home and see how they live. Last stop was the Fishing town...again we got a guided tour round the entire place and learnt the ways of fishing Gambia style Senegal Safari. Again we were collected bang on time from the gate of our hotel and headed over to the local ferry in Banjul...this was broke so we went on the boat (an experience not for the faint hearted trust me) Was on the other side of the river we had a short drive over the border into Senegal and the safari park... Here we saw rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, warthogs, buffalo and to top it off we went on the lion walk...stroking lions and walking along whilst holding their tails is not what i expected but thats what we got :) Leaving here we headed back to the port to grab some food and the ferry. Makatusu This place is a 5* eco lodge set in the grounds of a forest. On arrival we were greeted by a local guide and treated to tea and coffees before heading out on a canoe trip round the park. Seeing local children playing in the river and the local fishermen bringing in the oysters from the nets. Once done here we stated our walk around the forest seeing many different birds and also got surrounded by about 30 baboons. Once the walk was done it was back to base camp to sample so local cuisine and local dancers. During all the trips we had food and drinks were included in the price and we had plenty of both. Drinks coming from the cooler in the vehicles and were available whenever we asked. Armstrong and his team made our holiday...and would recommend them to anyone. Thanks once again buddy and thank you See you next year - Richard & Nicola x

Myself and my aunt went on the lazy day river cruise with Black and White Safari and had a fantastic day. The staff of 4 were fab and we had the boat to ourselves which was awesome, the food prepared on board is beautiful, varied and there is lots of it and having unlimited soft drinks is a great perk as it gets very hot. This day will only suit those who enjoy sunbathing, reading or fishing (learning to fish in our case) its exactly what it says its a long lazy day on the river gambia and for £40 per person we thought this was great value for money with hotel pickups included. Thanks Black and White :)

Having used Black and White Safari's on a previous trip I decided to use them again. Booking directly with Armstrong in their office at Senegambia I decided on Lazy Day trip. We were told that we'd be picked up from the hotel at 9am and sure enough Squire was waiting at the gates with Lamin the driver. We set off to Denton Bridge to pick up the boat. A two storey boat with plenty of seats. We set off just after 9:30 once other tour operators arrived and cruised through the mangroves until we reached our first spot for fishing. Squire was very helpful and showed how to cast out, I've never fished before. Squire and I decided to turn it into a competition. I managed to catch a couple of lady fish. Squire made sure that we were happy for the whole trip making sure that we had drinks and food, which is included in the cost of the trip. There was time to relax in the sun if you didn't want to fish anymore. We had an amazing day and I won the competition. We arrived back at the hotel just after 5. I would highly recommend Black and White Safari. They take pride in the service they deliver, the staff are amazing and again make you feel like family. Thank you again to all at Black and White Safari I'll be back for fishing next time I come to Gambia.

We have known Armstrong since 2002 when we first visited The Gambia, He put us at ease with his excellent manor and vast knowledge of the country. We have been on many trips with him visiting many places. He is now a good and trusted friend which we look forward to seeing every time we travel to The Gambia in November and March each year. Cliff & Sally James

My mum and me had two great trips with this company. First trip was to Senegal and the wild life park. Amazing to be close to all the animals. Second was Roots trip, including a boat trip that was perfect and relaxing. Both trips was with very friendly guides and driver. Have nothing negative to say, and when I return to Gambia this is the company i will use.

Just got back from a trip to The Gambia and would like to say a massive thank you to Armstrong and his team from Black and White Safari Tours for making it a trip to remember by taking us on trips like the Four Wheel Safari, Makasutu, Lazy Day Fishing ,Banjul and Albert Market and many other places. We could not fault him or his team, nothing was too much and his knowledge and information was second to none and would highly recommend him to anyone thinking of going on any trips whilst in the Gambia. We had a amazing time thanks again Armstrong... see you in April. Mick, Margaretha and Josh
