BMW Cruise bike: review

Nothing beats cruising round town in a BMW – but now you can do it on two wheels

P eugeot, Skoda, Rover… there are lots of car manufacturers which first made their name as bike builders. But here is one going the other way. BMW’s Cruise bike is a distinctive update of the original Californian cruisers which launched the mountain bike craze back in the 80s.

It’s all sleek lines and minimal detailing: the white paint job and blue rims are very Beemer in their aesthetic. The only other hint of its provenance is a discreet BMW badge lurking on the head lug. It has 30 slick Shimano gears, hardcore disc brakes and chunky tyres to ward off glass shards outside pubs.

This is very much a comfy commuter: a Boris bike on steroids. It’s also pretty hefty, but it soaks up the bumps and is perfect for cruising round the city with just a hint of German class ( shop.bmw.com ).

This time last year I bought a reflective cycling jacket – or rather my wife did in a bid to keep me safe on the roads while commuting. Just days after the official sales launch of the new BMW M2 Coupe , BMW is presenting a tribute to the BMW M family’s compact high-performance sports car: the BMW Cruise M Bike Limited Edition. A core stylistic element of the bike is its Long Beach Blue metallic paint finish, which matches the official colour of the BMW M2 Coupe.

Unmistakable M design.

Like the M2 Coupe, the BMW Cruise M Bike Limited Edition – which will be produced in a limited run of 1,500 units – boasts exceptional dynamics and agility. The bike cuts a powerful figure thanks to the hydro-formed aluminium frame’s distinctive “bullneck” – reminiscent of the tank position on a motorcycle – and its clear transitions in form.

Sumptuous, smooth welded seams lend a single-mould look to the frame design. And, like its automotive inspiration, the two-wheeler uses an eye-catching Long Beach Blue metallic colour scheme to highlight its confident character and spread joy through the ranks of BMW M aficionados and beyond.

BMW Cruise electric bike – first look

New e-bike has a claimed range of 70km

German car manufacturers BMW are poised to enter the exploding European electric bike market with their own model – the Cruise e-bike.

The company have released details of the 20kg (44lb) bike, which will have pedal assist capable of 25kmh and a maximum range of 85km. The bike's lithium ion battery is mounted on the down tube, and the 250W Bosch motor under the bottom bracket, meaning it should have a very low centre of gravity.

The bike has disc brakes and four modes of assistance, ranging from eco to turbo, reports the website technologicvehicles.com . A detachable computer will show speed, battery life and other parameters.

The bike also contains torque sensors, which note when the rider is delivering extra effort on hills and can contribute more power to maintain speed.

However, BMW are dipping a toe in the water rather than jumping head first into the market. They will only release 1,000 bikes for sale in Germany, where the popularity of electric bikes is increasing rapidly. According to a study co-authored by the Association of the European Bicycle Industry, sales of e-bikes in Germany rose 55 percent between 2011 and 2012.

The Cruise e-bike is not BMW’s first foray into the field, either. At the 2012 London Olympics, the car makers circulated 200 lightweight i Pedelec Concept folding bikes to athletes and organisers.

BMW haven’t yet given a release date or price for the Cruise e-bike.

The BMW Cruise M-Bike Limited Edition -- A bicycle for every BMW M enthusiast.

Now, BMW is complimenting its bicycle collection in spring 2015 with the presentation of a colorful tribute to the BMW M automobiles: a limited special edition BMW Cruise M-Bike. The characteristic Austin Yellow Metallic of the BMW M GmbH was adapted for this edition, which has been limited to 500 exemplars. Each model of the limited edition comes with a specially made plaque and a certificate.

The BMW Cruise M-Bike stands out with its modern design and lightweight construction elements. An optical highlight is the so-called “Bullneck” on the top tube in the front frame, which was borrowed from motorcycle design and is reminiscent of the tank position. Its hydro-formed aluminum frame and carbon components make the BMW Cruise M-Bike both light and stable.

Despite its low weight, the frame is very rigid, which ensures maximum power transmission at the lowest possible effort. The ergonomic handlebar concept, which is individually adjustable, allows for a comfortable ride, while the hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano guarantee a safe arrival.
