Paul Smith Updates a Design Classic with a New Collaboration with Braun

Messing with a design classic is always a risk, especially when it comes to a classic as iconic as the Braun BC02 travel alarm clock , which is probably why, when given the chance to collaborate with the German design brand, Paul Smith kept things simple . 

Taking inspiration from his eponymous brand’s rainbow stripe, Smith added small details of color to the range that includes the aforementioned alarm clock, a wristwatch, and a wall clock. With a declared admiration for Braun designer Dieter Rams on the record, Smith was already a fan of the simple functionality of the Braun pieces, aware that incorporating new design into a series of objects that have arguably already been perfected was a challenge. And so, in typical parred back style, fitting of Braun’s simple, beautiful typographic good looks, Smith opted to add a rainbow second hand to the watch, wall clock, and alarm clock and a blue dot at the center of each piece. And the result? Still the same Braun, but unmistakably Paul Smith. Check the pieces below, and look back at Smith’s previous artistic collaborations .

Paul Smith Joins Braun for a Limited Edition Collaborative Timekeeping Collection

Bauhaus design complemented with playful colors..

Following a collaboration with fragment design for the Dieter Rams exhibition in Japan, Braun has now turned to British fashion designer Paul Smith for yet another limited edition timekeeping collection, combining Bauhaus design sensibilities with a playful dash of color.

This time around, the collaborative effort includes more than just the BC02 Travel Alarm Clock and BC17 Wall Clock to also include the German company’s BN0032 Classic Watch, all powered by quartz movements. Clean black bodies and dials are paired starkly with precise yet uncluttered markings in a contrasting white shade, while stylish modern typography provides added legibility. A joyful touch then comes in the form of Paul Smith’s iconic multi-colored stripes, adorning the seconds hands of all three pieces.

Braun's Dietrich Lubs-penned Travel Alarm Clock is a design icon. Now Paul Smith is bringing his signature splash of color to the product. It retains the same rounded square shape as the original but adds an "Artist Stripe" second hand as well as a peacock blue tip to the alarm hand. It has a crescendo beeping alarm and is powered by a quiet quartz movement and a single AA battery.

The design of the BC02 originates from the renowned AB 1, designed in the late 80’s by Dietrich Lubs. Updated to include an improved movement and luminous tipped hour and minute hands. The clean simplistic dial and contrasting hands with luminous tips offer great legibility, and the quartz tick movement is quiet and precise. Its compact size (W5.7cm x H5.7cm x D2.7cm) and lightweight construction make it an ideal travel companion.
