Travel insurance and assistance services for US residents

Travel is rewarding, but sometimes things don’t go as expected. People can get sick, flights can get canceled, and bags can go missing. To help protect you financially, there’s travel insurance and assistance services.

Airbnb guests who live in the United States can add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page or after booking. The policy is underwritten by Generali US Branch and offered by Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC.

Don’t live in the US? Travel insurance is also available to residents of certain Canadian provinces , and residents of the United Kingdom and certain countries in the European Union . Reservation insurance is available to residents of France. And guests everywhere can purchase travel insurance outside of Airbnb, directly through a travel insurance company’s website or by shopping around on a comparison site.

Adding insurance to your reservation

If your reservation is eligible, you’ll be given the option to add travel insurance and assistance services on the checkout page. You’ll also be given the option to add travel insurance and assistance services after you book—just look for the Add to your trip button on your booking confirmation email and reservation details page.

Before adding travel insurance and assistance services to your reservation, be sure to review all the details to make sure it’s right for you.

Shortly after your travel insurance and assistance services purchase is confirmed, you’ll get an email that includes a copy of your plan, as well as a link to your plan details page, where you can cancel your plan, start a claim, and more.

Making changes to your reservation

Your travel insurance and assistance services plan will be automatically updated if the dates of your reservation or guest count change and there is no claim on the existing policy. If the change impacts the total price of your reservation, you’ll be charged or refunded an adjusted amount for your travel insurance and assistance services.

What’s covered

Travel insurance through Generali covers:

  • Trip cancellation : Get reimbursed for up to 100% of your Airbnb reservation cost if you need to cancel for a covered reason, such as illness or a flight cancellation due to weather. Note that events that have already happened or are foreseeable when you purchase the policy, such as a named hurricane, aren’t covered.
  • Travel delay: Get reimbursed up to $750 per person if your trip is delayed for 24 hours or more for a covered reason, such as a flight delay or stolen passport. Covered expenses may include meals, a place to stay, and parking costs.
  • Medical : Get reimbursed up to $50,000 per person for hospital and ambulance services, prescription drugs, and certain other doctor-ordered medical services. Note that pre-existing medical conditions may not be covered, as outlined below.
  • Baggage : Get reimbursed up to $1,000 for luggage, personal items, and travel documents that are lost, stolen, or damaged. Note that portable electronics like laptops and cell phones aren’t covered.
  • Baggage delay : Get reimbursed up to $250 per person for clothing, toiletries, and certain other expenses if your baggage is delayed for 24 hours or more.
  • Sporting equipment : Get reimbursed up to $1,000 per person for sporting equipment that’s lost, stolen, or damaged. Note that normal wear and tear isn’t covered.
  • Sporting equipment delay : Get reimbursed up to $1,000 per person for rentals and certain other expenses if your sporting equipment is delayed for 24 hours or more.
  • Trip interruption : Get reimbursed up to 150% of your Airbnb reservation cost for unused nights if your trip is delayed or cut short for a covered reason, such as illness or injury. Certain transportation expenses may also be covered.
  • Emergency transportation : Get reimbursed up to $100,000 per policy for medical evacuation, and certain other expenses if you get sick or injured while on your trip.

Coverage for COVID-19

Although pandemics aren’t covered by travel insurance, COVID-19 may be covered in some situations because it’s an illness.

Please note that if you file a claim due to COVID-19, you’ll be asked to provide documentation showing that you, a family member (for example, your child), or someone staying with you at the Airbnb accommodation tested positive while under the virtual or in-person supervision of a qualified medical professional.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing medical condition is an illness or injury that first manifested itself, got worse, or required treatment in the 180-day period before the insurance was purchased.

Pre-existing conditions are covered as long as you buy insurance within 15 days of booking, and while you’re medically able to travel. (Note that the 15-day requirement doesn’t apply to New York residents, who must only be medically able to travel at the time of purchasing insurance.)

Consult your policy for further details.

Assistance services

Each plan comes with assistance services like a 24-hour emergency hotline, concierge services, and roadside assistance. The amount you’ll be charged for travel protection includes a fee for these services.

Who’s covered

Each plan covers you and up to 9 people staying with you at the Airbnb accommodation. These people don’t have to be added to the Airbnb reservation or named on the policy in order to be covered, and there are no age restrictions.

Canceling your plan

US residents can cancel their travel insurance and assistance services plan within 10 days of purchase for a full premium refund. Please note that you can’t cancel your plan after you’ve departed on your trip or started a claim, even if you’re within your cancellation period.

To cancel your plan, just go to your plan details page and select Cancel plan .

Claims are handled by Generali from start to finish. You can start a claim by going to your policy details page and selecting Start a claim , or by contacting Generali directly.

Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests | What it is and How it Works

Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests | What it is and How it Works

Traveling opens doors to new experiences and cultures, but unexpected events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Trip cancellations, flight delays or medical emergencies can leave you scrambling for solutions and facing financial losses. This is where travel insurance steps in, offering a safety net for unforeseen circumstances.

Airbnb, recognizing this need, offers travel insurance as an add-on purchase for guests during the booking process. But how does it differ from the existing Airbnb Host Guarantee programs like AirCover for guests? Let's delve into the world of Airbnb travel insurance and understand how it can protect your next Airbnb adventure.

AirCover vs. Travel Insurance

It's important to distinguish between Airbnb travel insurance and AirCover for guests . AirCover is a free program offered by Airbnb. It acts as a safety net for situations directly related to the host or the listing itself.

Let's dissect what AirCover covers:

  • Listing inaccuracy: Did the pool in the pictures turn out to be a kiddie inflatable? AirCover comes to the rescue if the listing significantly differs from reality and the host can't rectify it. Guests will be assisted in finding similar accommodation or offered a full or partial refund.
  • Host cancellation within 30 days: Imagine booking your dream getaway only to have the host cancel last minute. AirCover ensures guests aren't left scrambling. It will help them find alternative accommodation or provide a full refund.
  • Unable to check-In (host's fault): You arrived at your stay, but the host is nowhere to be found, or there's a problem with access? AirCover steps in, helping guests find a similar place or offering a full refund depending on the circumstances.

In these scenarios, Airbnb will help you find a similar place to stay or offer a full or partial refund.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance

Travel insurance acts as a broader umbrella, shielding guests from a wider range of potential disruptions beyond the scope of AirCover.

Unlike AirCover, travel insurance is an optional add-on purchased during the booking process. It's provided by a third-party insurance company, currently Generali Global Assistance in the US and Europ Assistance Group in other parts of the world) and offers broader coverage for unforeseen circumstances outside the control of you and your host.

What does Airbnb travel insurance cover?

Airbnb travel insurance offers a safety net for various situations that could derail your trip. Here's a breakdown of some key coverages:

  • Trip cancellation: If you need to cancel your trip entirely for a covered reason, you can be reimbursed for up to 100% of your non-refundable Airbnb booking cost. Covered reasons typically include illness, injury (to yourself or a travel companion), natural disasters at your destination or unexpected work obligations.
  • Trip interruption: Imagine having to cut your Airbnb stay short (due to a covered reason). You can get reimbursed for the unused portion of your accommodation cost, potentially up to 150% (including the initial cancellation reimbursement). This additional 50% might cover some additional expenses incurred due to the disruption.
  • Travel delay: Flight delays can wreak havoc on your itinerary. If your trip is delayed by 24 hours or more due to a covered reason (like bad weather or a mechanical issue), you might be reimbursed for expenses like meals, accommodation and local transportation incurred during the delay, up to a certain limit per person (typically $750).
  • Emergency medical and evacuation: Accidents or sudden illness can occur anywhere. You get coverage for medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation (including repatriation) if needed during your trip.
  • Baggage delay or loss: Misplaced luggage can throw a wrench in your travel plans. If your checked baggage is delayed or lost for 24 hours or more, you might be reimbursed for essential items like toiletries and clothing to tide you over until your luggage arrives.

What does Airbnb travel insurance NOT cover?

This depends on how the coverage is defined and the country of residence of the Airbnb traveler. For example, UK residents are not covered for travel costs such as flights, trains and ferries as well as pre-existing medical conditions.

Policy details relevant to each country including areas of coverage and key exclusions can be found here .

How Does Airbnb AirCover Work with Airbnb Travel Insurance?

Airbnb’s AirCover for guests and travel insurance are two different but complementary products that work well together. For example, if a guest arrives at their destination only to find the host has canceled the reservation at the last minute. Meanwhile, they are informed at the airport that their baggage is missing. While AirCover will help the guest find a new place to stay at no extra cost, they can file an insurance claim to get reimbursed for their missing baggage.

Key Considerations for Guests When Choosing Travel Insurance

While AirCover offers valuable protections related to Airbnb itself, Airbnb travel insurance provides a broader safety net for various trip disruptions.

By understanding the coverage details and comparing it to your specific needs and risk tolerance, you can decide if Airbnb travel insurance is a worthwhile addition to your Airbnb booking. Here are some additional tips:

  • Compare costs: Don't just rely on the travel insurance offered during booking. Consider comparing it with independent travel insurance providers to see if you can find a better deal with similar coverage.
  • Read reviews: Researching online reviews of Generali's travel insurance can give you insights into their claim settlement process and customer service.
  • Consider trip protection on credit cards: Some credit cards offer trip cancellation or interruption insurance as a benefit. Check your credit card's benefits to see if it might already offer some coverage.
  • Always review the full terms and conditions of any travel insurance policy before purchasing.
  • File claims promptly according to the insurer's guidelines.
  • Keep all documentation related to your trip cancellation or disruption, including receipts and communication with the host or airline.

By being prepared with Airbnb travel insurance, you can embark on your Airbnb adventure with greater confidence, knowing you have some financial protection if the unexpected arises. Now you can focus on creating lasting memories during your stay!

Who should consider Airbnb travel insurance?

Travel insurance can be a wise investment for:

  • Those with non-refundable bookings: If you've booked an Airbnb with a strict cancellation policy , travel insurance can provide peace of mind in case unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel.
  • Those booking expensive trips: For trips with a significant financial investment, travel insurance can help mitigate potential losses due to cancellations or interruptions.

Ready, Set, Go!

Airbnb travel insurance is more than just a step in creating new revenue streams. It’s also a means of providing added convenience to users inclined to purchase travel insurance while keeping them inside the Airbnb platform.

By incorporating this optional safety net, you can approach your Airbnb adventure with a sense of security, ready to embrace the possibilities and forge unforgettable memories. Remember, travel insurance provides a financial buffer, but prioritizing safety and well-being throughout your travels should always be your top priority. Now, bon voyage!

Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests: Cost, details, limitations, differences with Aircover

Thibault Masson

Updated on: July 21, 2022

airbnb guest travel insurance (1)

Airbnb is rolling out its guest travel insurance in the US, the UK, and 8 countries of the European Union . The company had been working on it for at least two years. Unlike its Aircover for guests program, which is free, this travel insurance is a paid product . Travelers can purchase it while completing their booking. Big insurance company names are behind the insurance program (e.g. Europ Assistance, Generali, AON). Let’s discover what Airbnb’s travel insurance exactly covers, when it can be used, and wha t impact it can have on existing host cancelation policies . We’ll also see why it is difficult to roll out a travel insurance offering globally.

Airbnb is not the first vacation rental listing platform to be offering travel insurance to its guests. Vrbo has been selling travel insurance products in the US created by Generali (formerly CSA Travel Protection) for years. At a time when online travel agents like Hopper are promising incremental revenues from FinTech products to their investors, it is also good for Airbnb to announce a way to make money on insurance products, after giving away host insurance liability for free, for instance.

Where is Airbnb’s travel insurance available?

Airbnb is launching its guest travel insurance in the following countries:

  • the Netherlands,
  • Austria,

Airbnb is planning on making its travel insurance available to guests in other countries in the future. Our guess is that Airbnb will then go after other markets in the European Union, such as France, as it already has set some insurance operations within the EU. Then, other countries with similar insurance industry setups such as Australia come could.

Rolling out insurance is really a matter of going at it country by country and even state by state in the US. Insurance regulations are very strong and differ from one country to another in the EU and one state to another in the US.

For countries in South America, parts of Asia, and Africa, things will probably take more time.

airbnb guest travel insurance

What does the Airbnb travel insurance cover and when can a guest make a claim? Disover this trip cancellation insurance which does not infringe existing host cancellation policies.

What the airbnb travel covers, for instance, in the us:.

In the US, the Airbnb travel insurance is powered by the Generali insurance company. The plan includes:

  • Trip cancellation:  Get reimbursed for up to 100% of your non-refunded Airbnb reservation cost if you cancel for a covered reason, such as: iIllness or injury, flight cancellations and delays due to weather, or mandatory evacuations due to weather.
  • Travel delay:  Get reimbursed for certain additional expenses you incur because your trip is delayed for 12 hours or more for a covered reason, such as: flight delays, passport theft, or adverse weather.
  • Medical:  Get reimbursed for doctor-ordered medical services during your trip, such as: hospital services, ambulance services, and prescription medicines.
  • Baggage:  Get reimbursed for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, lost, stolen, or damaged travel documents, and unauthorized use of credit cards during your trip.

The plan also comes with other coverages and perks, like 24/7 emergency and travel assistance services. With just a phone call, you can get help with anything from a medical referral to a restaurant recommendation.

What does the Airbnb travel insurance mean for a host?

Airbnb’s travel insurance for guests promises a payment for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb reservation costs if their trip is impacted by specific events, such as

  • bad weather,
  • stolen travel documents,
  • or serious illness.

Airbnb’s travel insurance is more like a trip cancellation insurance that works under certain conditions than a cancel-for-any reason insurance product.

Basically, if a traveler has to cancel their trip:

  • The existing host cancellation policy will apply.
  • Let’s take the example of a booking made under the Airbnb Strict cancellation policy . It allows guests to receive a full refund if they cancel within 48 hours of booking and at least 14 days before a listing’s check-in time. In the event of a cancellation within 48 hours, the guest is only entitled to a 50% refund, regardless of how far out the check-in date is. S o, the host only pays back 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost.
  • Now, if specific events listed and covered by the Airbnb travel insurance occur, then travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% .
  • Note that, unlike with Aircover, the insurance provider will not seek to recover any money from the Host if a guest files a travel insurance claim

What exactly is the “Airbnb booking cost” that is covered?

To our understanding, the Airbnb booking cost is what the guest pays to the host. It may or may not include Airbnb’s service fee. Depending on the existing host cancellation policy, the travel insurance will pay the guest the part of the booking cost that the host got to keep as per the cancellation policy.

For example, if the Host refunds 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost based on their cancellation policy, travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% if the guest cancels for a covered reason.

How about COVID-19?

At Airbnb, for any booking made on or after May 31, 2022, being sick with COVID-19 will no longer be considered an extenuating circumstance. This is also the case on most online travel platforms such as Booking.com and Vrbo?

According to Airbnb, its guest travel insurance “could” cover costs related to COVID as it can cover “serious illness”: “If a guest purchases travel insurance, they could be covered should they become sick with COVID-19 (as diagnosed by a licensed doctor) and other policy terms are met. So, it may depend on where the guest booking is from, among other things.

If they are worried about having to cancel a trip due to COVID-related reasons,  Airbnb recommends travelers buy travel insurance. So, it would make sense that Airbnb started selling such an insurance product to its guests.

How can you buy guest travel insurance on Airbnb?

Guests get the option to purchase travel insurance during the booking process. The Airbnb guest travel insurance cannot be bought separately or after the booking has been made.

  • During booking, guests are given the option to add travel insurance.
  • Dedicated screens provide details about what the policy covers and key exclusions.
  • If they’re interested, guests simply add travel insurance to their booking and check out.
  • The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout.
  • After completing their reservation, guests who added travel insurance will receive an email confirmation with their policy’s details and information about how to file a claim

Is it free or paid?

The Airbnb travel insurance is not free, can be purchased at booking time and covers up to 100% of Airbnb booking cost

How much does the Airbnb guest travel insurance cost?

The cost of Airbnb’s travel insurance is not a fixed cost. It varies according to the total trip cost (as well as the location of the guest making the booking). The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout.

What are the differences between Aircover for guests (free) vs Airbnb travel insurance (paid)?

So here are the main differences with Aircover for guests:

  • Aircover for guests is free, while Airbnb’s travel insurance is a paid product.
  • Aircover relies on a set of processes that force hosts to pay back guests in case of major issues (e.g. impossible to check-in, a major listing feature missing such as air conditioning)
  • Airbnb’s travel insurance is underwritten by large insurance companies such as Generali.
  • Aircover for guests is triggered when things do not go well due to issues on the host side, while the guest travel insurance covers trip cancellations due to bad weather or the guest falling sick.
  • While Aircover for guests often gets down to hosts refunding money to guests, Airbnb’s travel insurance is money paid by the insurance company to the guests (no money is retrieved from the host on top of the existing host cancellation policy).

Aircover for guests is a set of protections that rely on hosts refunding money. It is no insurance, unlike the guest travel insurance product being introduced

Du ring its Summer 2022 Release event , Airbnb announced a program called “Aircover” which offers new booking protections for guests, for free. These are protections, not insurance. Basically, they rely on Airbnb’s ability to get money back from the host to the guest in case of a substantial breach in what the guest was expecting (e.g. Air conditioning or a swimming pool were listed by the host but they are not actually available at the property).

The protections offered to guests through Airbnb’s Aircover are presented as unique and ground-breaking. Yet, they look like a nice repackaging of existing services that companies such as Booking.com have been offering for years (e.g., helping find a place for the guest should the host cancel). Now, better packaging protections, giving them a name (Aircover), and merchandising them well on the website (Aircover is mentioned high on every listing page) make up good product marketing work. If competitors have been doing the same but have done a bad job at saying so, travelers will indeed have the impression that what Airbnb is offering for free is new and superior in terms of booking protections.

On the guest side, Aircover is no insurance product. It is more the sum of a series of policies and procedures imposed on the host, especially the recently updated and much-contested rebooking and refunding policy.

Aircover is about guaranteeing that Airbnb will either find a new place or refund the guest (e.g., Check-In Guarantee: If a guest can’t check in to a place and the host isn’t able to resolve the issue, Airbnb will find the guest a similar or better home for the length of their original stay at Airbnb’s expense, or we’ll refund them.

To deliver on its promises to guests, Airbnb needed to set the equivalent expectations upon hosts . This is why the company had previously informed its hosts that it was updating its Rebooking and Refund Policy . For instance, it has made it plain and clear to hosts that they may have to refund guests should the host cancel a booking or the guest find that something crucial promised in the listing was actually missing from the property. You will notice that this is the exact mirror of the protections offered to guests, and it makes sense: The money refunded to guests through Aircover actually comes from hosts having to refund them according to the updated rebooking and refund policy.

Why did Airbnb make its travel insurance a paid product, while Aircover for guests and Aircover for hosts are free?

If Airbnb were to offer free travel insurance, it would also have to pay an insurance premium to a professional insurer . Given the volume of Airbnb bookings, it would represent a lot of money and would dent Airbnb’s profitability.

First, Airbnb would not need to cover all its guests, as some already have their travel insurance. Also, unless a reservation is non-refundable, a guest may have a chance to get their money back by canceling their booking or asking their host for some flexibility. Hosts may not like to hear it, but, in a way, flexible cancellation policies are a form of travel insurance for guests.

Second, Airbnb seems to see travel insurance as a money-maker. After all, Vrbo has been flogging insurance products to guests and owners for years, probably making a lot of money from its insurance provider Generali.

  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, a financial analyst asked Airbnb leaders whether the take rate, currently at 15% on average, would increase in the future. The answers were quite interesting.
  • First, Airbnb mentioned, “opportunities (such as) guest travel insurance”. So, the take rate could increase from commissions on travel insurance that Airbnb would sell to guests.

Another reason why it could be a paid product for guests is Hopper’s success at selling its “cancel any time” and “price freeze” guarantees. It shows that consumers are ok to pay for an added service. Airbnb’s shareholders may be happy to hear that the company is trying to increase its margins, as Hopper is doing. With the launch of Hopper Homes, the competition between the two companies is increasing.

What’s the impact of Airbnb’s travel insurance on existing host cancellation policies?

There is no impact on a host’s cancellation polic y. If a guest cancels, they forfeit whatever money was due under the cancellation policy they had signed up for. The host gets to keep the deposit.

What the travel insurance brings about is that the guest can ask the insurance company to refund the money that the host has kept for themselves (as per the existing cancellation policy).

So, Airbnb has found a way to enforce host policies, while allowing guests to lower their risk through travel insurance. According to the company, if travelers who buy a policy cancel their booking for a covered reason, they’ll be able to file a claim to seek reimbursement for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb booking cost. This may reduce the possibility of guests asking Hosts for a refund outside the terms of their Hosts’ cancellation policies.

The challenges of offering an insurance product on a global basis

When Airbnb first revealed that its $1,000,000 Host Guarantee had gone global ten years ago, the industry wondered how Airbnb had pulled it off. How can they have created and launched such an insurance product globally? The answer was that the company could, as this was no insurance. This was a guarantee, built on processes and tools such as the Resolution Center . In some iffy cases, Airbnb was probably also ready to spend some money of its own the solve the issue. So, no need to care about local insurance regulations across 130+ countries. No insurance, just a guarantee.

It is somewhat easier to roll out a liability insurance program for hosts ( as Booking.com just did ), as the risk is a bit more standard and as insurance companies have some existing products that can be used. This is why Aircover for Hosts has a real liability insurance product, while, on the damage protection side, Airbnb is still relying on the Resolution Center.

The Airbnb Guest Travel Insurance has been in the works for almost two years!

  • On March 30, 2020, during an emergency live stream held with Airbnb hosts in the thick of the COVID crisis, B rian Chesky announced that the company was working on travel insurance ,
  • In 2021, Airbnb discreetly launched its Travel Insurance page and started recommending guests purchased a travel insurance product at the end of its booking process. Airbnb here was merely redirecting travelers to third-party websites, such as the travel insurance aggregator InsureMyTrip in the US and insurance company Europ Assistance (part of the Generali Group) in Europe,
  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, Airbnb mentioned working on opportunities such as  “guest travel insurance”,
  • On January 2, Brian Chesky confirmed in a tweet that the company was working on guest travel insurance

Who are the insurance companies behind Airbnb’s travel insurance?

It is always hard to pull off global coverage, as insurance is really more like a series of national businesses due to local regulations . Airbnb had to create subsidiaries that deal with insurance on local or regional levels, such as Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC in the US and Airbnb UK Services Limited in the UK.

Two partners with Aon + Europ Assistance Group (and its U.S. subsidiary, Generali Global Assistance), to introduce travel insurance for guests. Both AO

  • For guests in the U.S., the travel insurance plan is offered by Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC , which is licensed as an insurance agency in all states of the U.S. and the District of Columbia, and underwritten by Generali US Branch of New York, N.Y.
  • For guests in the U.K., travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistanc e SA. Travel insurance is arranged by Airbnb UK Services Limited . Airbnb UK Services Limited is an appointed representative of Aon UK Limited
  • For guests in the EU, travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistance S.A., acting through its Irish Branch

Airbnb has been working on its guest travel insurance product for over two years and announced that it will be launching the product in Spring 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Airbnb to expedite the launch of this product. The company is launching its travel insurance as a paid product in 10 countries. More countries, at least within the European Union, should soon be covered.

Airbnb stacks this paid product on top of its free Aircover booking guarantees. This way, it wants to show that it is already offering a great level of protection but that money can buy guests something extra. It certainly does not hurt that insurance products have comfortable margins and that it is also a good move for Airbnb’s bottom line.

New insurance product and COVID relief program to support guests

Key Takeaways

  • Airbnb is set to launch guest insurance and a $20 million Guest COVID Support Program.

Person cleaning hands

Today we’re announcing two new ways Airbnb will support our guest community as they navigate unexpected impacts of the recent surge in COVID cases throughout the world — an upcoming guest travel insurance product and the launch of Airbnb’s Guest COVID Support Program.

Since the WHO’s declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic in March 2020, we’ve continued to prioritize public health. Our guiding principle has been that people should not travel or host if they are sick with this virus.

In this context, we announced the global activation of our Extenuating Circumstances policy in March 2020 enabling guests who booked before the pandemic to get refunds, making Airbnb the first short-term rental platform to implement such a consumer-friendly approach to COVID cancellations. And Airbnb continues to allow guests who contract COVID to cancel for a full refund even if it’s outside of the Host’s cancellation policy. This is something none of our peer short-term rental companies have done.

But over the past month, we’ve seen the stress and challenges spurred by Omicron, and we’ve stayed close to our community, which includes both Hosts and guests. As a two-sided platform, it is important to recognize that the Omicron spike has greatly impacted our Hosts, and we know many lost out on income as well as the opportunity to market their listing over the holiday season following last-minute cancellations. For this reason, we are grateful that our Host community as a whole has sought to offer guests greater flexibility — with almost two thirds of active listings now offering moderate or flexible cancellation policies. And many even went above and beyond their cancellation policies to support guests over the course of this unprecedented Omicron wave that hit over the holiday travel season.

Travelers have been hit hard, particularly with sudden travel restrictions and border shutdowns. We also know that many travelers who may be wary of crowded hotel lobbies during this Omicron spike are increasingly viewing short-term rentals booked through a trusted platform like Airbnb as a safer travel option for family and friends — particularly as Airbnb Hosts remain committed to Airbnb’s COVID safety and cleaning practices .

We understand that our guests are also trying to navigate in a really dynamic environment, so we’ll be stepping up our support for guests in the following ways:

Airbnb Guest Travel Insurance

We will launch a custom-built guest travel insurance product offering exclusive to Airbnb guests. The same team that brought our AirCover Host protection product to life is building our new guest insurance product in partnership with a reputable insurance carrier. We plan to launch this new product in Spring 2022.

Until this new product is available, we urge guests to purchase travel insurance outside of Airbnb, or to utilize the functionality of our free cancellation search filter to find listings that have more flexibility.

can you add airbnb travel insurance after booking

Airbnb Guest COVID Support Program

While we work towards the travel insurance launch, we are introducing our new Guest COVID Support Program to provide relief to guests no longer able to proceed with their previously booked reservations due to unexpected travel disruptions caused by government mandates — such as border closures or mandatory extended quarantine requirements.

For guests in these situations who are unable to obtain full refunds under their Hosts’ cancellation policies, Airbnb will provide relief in the form of a travel coupon for 50 percent of the cost of the unrefunded portion of the reservation. We are funding this program with $20 million initially to help defray these financial impacts to our guests and ensure guests know that we are listening to their concerns.

This program is effective immediately, and applies retroactively to reservations that (1) have a check-in date on or after December 1, 2021 and (2) had to be cancelled by the guest due to border closures, government mandates and certain other Omicron-related travel restrictions not in effect at the time of booking. If guests had reservations for stays with check-in dates on or after December 1, and they had to cancel in advance of check-in due to unexpected travel disruptions caused by government mandates, they are eligible for relief under this program.

For example, if a traveler in October booked a stay in Israel with a check-in date for late December — and Israel’s restrictions on outside travel were announced after the date of booking but before the date of check-in —  this program would retroactively apply. However, if a traveler books a stay in Israel today while the same travel restrictions are already in place, the program would not apply.

Guests can find full program details here and should contact our 24/7 Community Support team if they believe their reservations meet the program criteria.

This program is meant to support guests who have encountered extreme and unexpected government-mandated travel disruptions due to Omicron and through no fault of their own. Other circumstances such as a guest testing positive for COVID just prior to a reservation will still be covered by Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy and therefore will not be eligible under this new program. Additionally, extreme travel disruptions such as earthquakes, wildfires, etc. that are not related to COVID are also covered under Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy.

Despite Omicron, this New Year’s Eve nearly 4.5 million guests in 53,000 places around the world put their faith in our Hosts and platform to deliver safe and meaningful experiences. This represented our biggest night since the start of the pandemic.

We will continue to emphasize responsible travel, including communicating updates about our forthcoming guest insurance product ahead of the Spring launch.

If you own property and plan to rent it out on Airbnb, it’s important to have insurance coverage to protect you from liability and property damage caused by guests. Airbnb provides its own host liability insurance policy as well as damage protection insurance through AirCover. AirCover also provides insurance for guests that covers cancellations and issues your host can’t solve.

AirCover may not be the best option for everyone, so it’s important to compare home insurance rates from multiple companies. Here’s what you need to know about how Airbnb AirCover can protect you as a host or a guest during an Airbnb stay.

Understanding Airbnb insurance for hosts

AirCover for Hosts is Airbnb’s insurance policy for people renting their property through the app. It provides thorough protection, including $1 million in host liability coverage, $3 million in host damage protection, and $1 million in experiences liability insurance. It also includes things like guest identity verification, reservation screening, and a 24-hour safety line.

You don’t need to opt in, either. Airbnb will automatically enroll you. But it’s not mandatory in the U.S. You can opt out of Airbnb AirCover liability insurance, but you shouldn’t unless you have sufficient alternate coverage.

If you don’t want AirCover insurance for any reason, email Airbnb at [email protected] to request its removal from your account. [1] If you don’t reach anyone at that email address, you can also call Airbnb to speak with a representative.

Host liability insurance

Host liability insurance is a main part of AirCover. Airbnb hosts automatically have $1 million of host liability coverage, which protects you if a guest has an accident resulting in injury or has their property damaged or stolen while staying in your Airbnb. [2]

Here’s a breakdown of exactly what it covers:

Bodily injury to a guest

Theft or damage of a guest’s property

Damage caused by a guest to common areas like lobbies

It doesn’t cover the following:

Intentional damage or injury

Damages to property or belongings caused by a guest covered by host damage protection

Host damage protection.

Host damage protection is the other key component of AirCover. Hosts automatically have $3 million of coverage, which protects you if an Airbnb guest damages your property during their short-term vacation. It also covers cleaning fees in some instances. [3]

Damage to your property or belongings caused by guests

Damage to vehicles caused by guests

Loss of income due to necessary cancellations

Extra cleaning services resulting from guests’ actions

Normal wear and tear

Currency loss

Property damage or injury to guests

Acts of God or natural disasters

Check-out tasks such as cleaning and laundry

Limits of Airbnb insurance

In some cases, you may want to purchase an insurance policy for your short-term rental property in addition to the insurance provided by Airbnb. Though Airbnb has high coverage limits, you may want to look into other insurance products for more protection, depending on your situation.

Airbnb isn’t a traditional insurance company, so it may not be as reliable as more established insurers. Ask your home insurance company if it offers short-term rental insurance. This can provide an extra layer of coverage to protect your property and finances and provide peace of mind.

Does standard homeowners or renters insurance cover Airbnb properties?

No. Standard homeowners or renters insurance doesn’t cover Airbnb properties. Because renting your home out qualifies as a business activity, insurers won’t cover any damages resulting from guests like they would for your primary residence.

You may be able to get an Airbnb host insurance endorsement or a home-sharing endorsement from your current insurer for an additional cost, though not every company offers one.

You can also consider short-term rental insurance. It covers liability damage , property damage, theft, and burglary. However — like AirCover — it doesn’t cover intentional damages, your Airbnb guests’ personal property, or regular wear and tear.

Learn More: What Is Home Repair Insurance?

Risks of renting out your property.

Renting out your property increases the risk of damages and thus needing to file a claim. This is why insurance companies won’t cover home-sharing under standard homeowners insurance policies. Having coverage protects you from these additional risks, including:

Inconsiderate guests

Property damages

Misuse of appliances

Theft of personal belongings

Water damage and stains

How to file a claim with AirCover

To file a claim with AirCover, you’ll first need to document the subject of the claim with photos, videos, repair estimates, and any other relevant information. You’ll then need to file a reimbursement request through Airbnb’s online resolution center.

Your guest will then have one day to respond to the request. If they don’t pay for the damages, you can officially submit a reimbursement request for Airbnb to review.

Many hosts report that the process of filing a claim is straightforward but can be frustrating. They don’t always get the results they want and often the money from damages isn’t worth it because it results in guests leaving bad reviews, thus damaging their Airbnb ratings.

It’s up to you as the host to decide if the monetary damages are worth the risk of a difficult guest who might choose to leave a bad review.

Does Airbnb have insurance for guests?

This includes reservation insurance in some scenarios, host cancellations within 30 days, and falsely advertised conditions of an Airbnb rental property.

Airbnb insurance FAQs

Sharing your home with strangers can be stressful. Check out the answers to these commonly asked questions about Airbnb liability insurance to make sure you have the proper insurance for your home.

Does Airbnb insure against damage?

Yes. Airbnb insures against damage through its AirCover insurance. It offers host damage protection of up to $3 million if a guest damages your property or belongings.

What type of insurance do you need as an Airbnb host?

You don’t technically need to have insurance as an Airbnb host, but it’s typically a good idea to carry some. You can get liability and property damage insurance through AirCover, Airbnb’s insurance program, or you can just purchase short-term rental insurance through a traditional insurance company.

Does Airbnb automatically provide insurance?

Yes. Airbnb automatically provides insurance for both hosts and guests. If you want to, you can opt out of the coverage. But it’s risky for a property owner to rent out property without proper protection. Just like how landlords need landlord insurance, you should have protection for your property, whether you’re using it as a short or long-term vacation rental.

Can you add Airbnb travel insurance after booking?

Yes. You can add Airbnb travel insurance after booking. Generali US Branch underwrites Airbnb’s travel insurance policies.

Does Airbnb insurance pay out?

It depends. If you’re a host and experience damage, you can file a property damage claim with Airbnb. Your guest will have a chance to dispute your claim, and Airbnb needs to review it before paying you for any damages.

If you have a legitimate claim, you should receive a payout, per Airbnb’s contractual obligations laid out in the Host Guarantee Terms and Conditions. [4] But people renting out your home can leave a bad review, so weigh the costs of each outcome before filing a claim.

What is Airbnb Travel Insurance?

Airbnb travel insurance, also known as Airbnb Host Protection Insurance, is a valuable safeguard that provides coverage for both guests and hosts in the event of unforeseen circumstances during a stay. This insurance is designed to offer financial protection and peace of mind, addressing a wide range of potential issues that may arise before, during, or after a trip booked through Airbnb.

For guests, Airbnb travel insurance offers coverage for various scenarios, including trip cancellations, trip interruptions, medical emergencies, lost or delayed luggage, and property damage. This means that if you encounter unexpected obstacles that disrupt your travel plans or incur additional expenses, the insurance can provide compensation and assistance, helping mitigate the impact of these events.

Additionally, Airbnb travel insurance extends protection to hosts, offering coverage for property damage caused by guests during their stay. This ensures that hosts are financially safeguarded in the event of accidental damage to their property, providing a layer of security and reassurance as they welcome guests into their homes.

By understanding the scope of Airbnb travel insurance, both guests and hosts can make informed decisions and approach their travel experiences with greater confidence. As you plan your next adventure or prepare to host travelers, exploring the details of Airbnb travel insurance can help you navigate the intricacies of travel protection and ensure that you’re equipped to handle unforeseen events with resilience and financial security.

Coverage for Trip Cancellation

One of the key provisions of Airbnb travel insurance is coverage for trip cancellation. This aspect of the insurance offers protection in the event that you need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Whether it’s a sudden illness, a family emergency, or other unexpected events, trip cancellation coverage can provide financial reimbursement for non-refundable trip expenses, such as accommodation costs and transportation fees.

When faced with a situation that forces you to cancel your travel plans, having trip cancellation coverage can alleviate the financial burden and offer peace of mind, knowing that you won’t incur significant losses from prepaid expenses. It’s important to review the specific terms and conditions of the coverage, as certain circumstances may be eligible for reimbursement while others may not be covered.

For example, if you or a family member falls ill before your scheduled trip and you need to cancel your reservation, Airbnb travel insurance can step in to provide compensation for the non-refundable costs associated with your stay. Similarly, unexpected events such as natural disasters or travel advisories may also trigger trip cancellation coverage, offering a safety net in uncertain situations.

By understanding the nuances of trip cancellation coverage within Airbnb travel insurance, you can make informed decisions when planning your trip and ensure that you’re prepared for unforeseen events that may necessitate the cancellation of your travel arrangements. This aspect of the insurance serves as a valuable safeguard, offering financial protection and support during challenging times, allowing you to navigate unexpected circumstances with greater resilience and peace of mind.

Coverage for Trip Interruption

Alongside trip cancellation coverage, Airbnb travel insurance includes provisions for trip interruption, offering protection in the event that your trip is unexpectedly cut short due to unforeseen circumstances. Trip interruption coverage serves as a valuable safeguard, providing financial reimbursement for additional expenses incurred as a result of having to return home earlier than planned.

Unforeseen events such as a family emergency, a sudden illness, or other unexpected situations may necessitate the interruption of your trip. In such cases, trip interruption coverage can step in to mitigate the financial impact by offering compensation for the unused portion of your pre-paid expenses, as well as any additional expenses incurred while returning home.

For example, if a family member falls ill during your trip and you need to return home earlier than planned, trip interruption coverage can provide reimbursement for the unused portion of your accommodation costs, transportation expenses, and other non-refundable arrangements. This ensures that you’re not financially burdened by the unexpected need to cut your trip short, offering support and assistance during challenging times.

Understanding the scope of trip interruption coverage within Airbnb travel insurance empowers you to approach your travels with greater confidence, knowing that you have a safety net in place in the event of unforeseen disruptions. By being aware of the protection offered by this aspect of the insurance, you can make informed decisions and navigate unexpected circumstances with resilience, ensuring that your travel experience is safeguarded against the impact of unexpected events.

Coverage for Medical Emergencies

When traveling, especially to unfamiliar destinations, the possibility of facing a medical emergency is a consideration that cannot be overlooked. Airbnb travel insurance includes coverage for medical emergencies, offering valuable protection in the event that you require medical attention during your trip. This aspect of the insurance provides financial support and assistance, ensuring that you have access to medical care and that any associated expenses are covered.

In the unfortunate event of a medical emergency while traveling, the coverage for medical emergencies within Airbnb travel insurance can offer reimbursement for medical treatment, hospital stays, and other related expenses. Whether you require urgent medical attention, prescription medications, or hospitalization, having this coverage can provide peace of mind, knowing that you won’t be burdened by significant out-of-pocket costs.

Furthermore, the coverage for medical emergencies may extend to include emergency medical evacuation, ensuring that you can be transported to the nearest appropriate medical facility if the situation requires specialized care that is not available locally. This additional layer of protection can be crucial in situations where timely access to advanced medical treatment is essential for your well-being.

By understanding the scope of coverage for medical emergencies within Airbnb travel insurance, you can approach your travels with greater confidence, knowing that you have financial protection and support in the event of unexpected health-related challenges. Whether you’re exploring a new destination or embarking on an adventure, having this coverage in place ensures that you can prioritize your well-being without being unduly concerned about the potential financial impact of medical emergencies.

Coverage for Lost or Delayed Luggage

One of the common concerns for travelers is the possibility of lost or delayed luggage, which can disrupt travel plans and cause inconvenience. Airbnb travel insurance addresses this concern by providing coverage for lost or delayed luggage, offering financial compensation and support in the event that your belongings are misplaced or delayed during your trip.

In the unfortunate event that your luggage is lost by the airline or transportation provider, the coverage for lost luggage within Airbnb travel insurance can offer reimbursement for the value of your belongings, helping mitigate the financial impact of the loss. Similarly, if your luggage is delayed and you incur additional expenses for essential items such as clothing and toiletries, the insurance can provide compensation for these out-of-pocket costs.

Having coverage for lost or delayed luggage offers peace of mind, knowing that you’re financially protected in the event of such travel disruptions. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, having this safeguard in place ensures that you can navigate the inconvenience of lost or delayed luggage without bearing the full financial burden.

In the unfortunate event of property damage caused by a guest, the coverage within Airbnb travel insurance can provide compensation for the repair or replacement of the damaged property, ensuring that hosts are not unduly burdened by the financial impact of such incidents. This aspect of the insurance offers reassurance to hosts, allowing them to open their homes to guests with confidence, knowing that they have financial protection in place.

Host Protection Insurance serves as a safety net, offering coverage for a wide range of scenarios, including accidental property damage caused by guests, as well as claims for bodily injury that may occur during a guest’s stay. When can you buy travel insurance?

When is the best time to buy travel insurance, when is it too late to buy travel insurance, if you want to buy travel insurance after booking.

When you’re planning a trip away from home, travel insurance provides peace of mind, especially for pricey vacations. Maybe you’ve already started booking a trip and only now realized travel insurance might be a good idea. You may be wondering, “Can I buy travel insurance after booking my trip or purchasing plane tickets?”

The short answer is: Yes, you can.

However, timing is everything when it comes to buying travel insurance — and some options won’t be available if you wait too long. Here's a look at buying travel insurance, the best times to purchase it and when it’s too late to get it.

Depending on what you’re doing, travel insurance can provide coverage for a variety of situations, including medical care, trip delays, lost luggage and even trip cancellation.

If travel insurance is something you’re considering, you’ll want to purchase it sooner rather than later — but not before booking your travel.

Many travel credit cards come with complimentary travel insurance .

Before booking

You won’t want to buy insurance before you book any travel, especially if you aren’t firm on your plans. Policies such as trip cancellation insurance are meant to protect you against nonrefundable losses that you have incurred. If you haven’t booked your travel yet, you won’t know your out-of-pocket costs or how much coverage you’ll need.

After booking

While it’s not recommended to purchase travel insurance before booking travel, you’ll want to do so as soon as your reservations are made. At this point, you can expect to see the greatest number of options to choose from, including Cancel For Any Reason insurance .

It is possible to purchase travel insurance up until the very last minute — most insurance companies will allow you to buy a policy until the day before departure. Keep in mind that your options will be limited if you wait, however, and some benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption may no longer be available.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as your reservations have been made. Waiting a long period of time after booking your trip can make you ineligible for certain types of insurance. Examples of this include:

Pre-existing medical condition insurance. This is time-sensitive insurance and allows for treatment for existing medical conditions if they’re aggravated by travel. You’ll need to be medically fit to travel at the time you purchase this coverage. You must also insure 100% of your trip. Finally, the time period you have to buy the insurance will vary according to the provider; generally, you’ll be expected to purchase this 10 to 21 days after first putting down a deposit.

Cancel For Any Reason insurance. As the name suggests, this insurance allows you to cancel your trip and receive a portion of your nonrefundable costs back, no matter the reason why you’re canceling. Typically, you’ll need to purchase CFAR insurance 10 to 21 days after putting down your initial deposit. Providers may also require you to cancel your trip earlier than 48 to 72 hours before your scheduled departure.

Finally, your ability to buy travel insurance evaporates if you aren’t already covered when an event arises. Just like you are unable to buy cell phone insurance when you’ve already cracked your screen, you can’t buy most types of travel insurance if your trip has already been affected.

Let’s say that you booked a trip to France last June. You’ve been intending to buy trip cancellation insurance but have been putting it off. However, just two weeks before you’re set to leave, you slip down a set of stairs and break your leg. Now you’re rocking a set of crutches and there’s no way you’re fitting in that economy class seat you’d booked.

Trip cancellation insurance would have covered you for any nonrefundable purchases you’d made due to your unforeseen injury. But now that your leg is already broken, it’s no longer an option. Because trip cancellation insurance isn’t retroactive, you’ll just have to absorb the cost.

» Learn more: Trip cancellation insurance explained

How close to a trip can you buy insurance? We’ve outlined some specific situations above in which you’re no longer able to buy travel insurance, including time-sensitive policies that must be purchased soon after you make your reservations.

Otherwise, you’re able to buy most types of travel insurance all the way until the day before you begin traveling. Any time after that — even 12:01 a.m. on your departure date — and it’s too late to insure your trip.

Can you buy travel insurance at the airport?

No, you can’t buy travel insurance at the airport. You also can’t buy it when you’ve already boarded your cruise, you’ve chosen not to attend a tour or your flight is so late it causes you to miss your connection.

» Learn more: What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance can be a good idea for many reasons, especially if you’re worried about anything going wrong during your trip or if you’ve invested a lot of money into a vacation. Happily, for procrastinators, most types of travel insurance are available after you’ve already booked your travel. You’ll simply need to make the purchase at least one day before travel.

However, there are some types of coverage that you’ll need to buy soon after booking or they won’t be available. These include Cancel for Any Reason insurance as well as pre-existing medical condition insurance. So if you are interested in buying travel insurance, purchasing a policy soon after booking your trip is the best way to go.

How late can you buy travel insurance

There is no set answer to this question as it depends on the individual situation. In general, you can buy coverage any time before the date of your trip. For Airbnb rentals, we recommend speaking with your insurance provider to see if your policy covers short-term rentals. Many landlord insurance policies will not cover rentals of under thirty days. If you have a renter in mind who will stay more than a month consecutively on your property, landlord insurance could be right for you.

Can you get travel insurance for a trip already booked?

Taking out travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is a good idea in case you need to cancel your trip. For example, if you get injured or fall ill before your departure date, you’ll be covered by your insurance policy.

You can buy travel insurance at any time before your trip. However, the best time to purchase it is usually when you book your tickets. This is because most travel insurance policies have a “cancel for any reason” clause that allows you to cancel your trip and get a refund, even if you don’t have a specific reason.

If you wait too long to purchase travel insurance, you may not be able to get it. This is because many policies have a “pre-existing conditions” clause that excludes coverage for any medical conditions that you had before you purchased the policy.

How many days in advance should I buy travel insurance

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s important to purchase travel insurance within the 14-day window before your trip. Look for a plan that includes the existing medical condition benefit to make sure you’re covered.

If you’re planning on going on a trip, it’s important to make sure you have travel insurance. Otherwise, you may have to pay for any problems that come up out of your own pocket, or you may lose money if you have to cancel your trip.

Does travel insurance get more expensive closer to the trip?

This is good news for travelers who like to procrastinate or who don’t know their travel dates far in advance. However, it’s important to keep in mind that some insurers might not cover any events related to coronavirus if you buy your policy closer to your travel date. So if you’re considering buying travel insurance, be sure to check the policy terms carefully to see if you’re covered for any events related to the pandemic.

Can you add airbnb travel insurance after booking?

I’m glad I chose to add insurance to my hotel booking. I was worried about what would happen if I needed to cancel or change my plans, but this insurance gives me peace of mind. I would recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

What date should you put on travel insurance

If you are buying an Annual Multi-Trip insurance policy, the start date should be the first day you want coverage to begin. Please note that if you have already booked a trip, you will need the insurance to start immediately so that you have the benefit of cancellation coverage.

There is no one definitive answer to the question of when to buy travel insurance. Typically, it is best to purchase a policy as soon as you have booked or made a financial commitment to your trip. This will ensure that you are covered in the event of any unforeseen circumstances that may arise.

Airbnb Slumps as Gloomy Forecast Fans Slowdown Fears

Reuters

(Reuters) -Airbnb shares tumbled nearly 7% in afternoon trading on Thursday after weak forecasts for the second quarter stoked investor fears about slowing growth at the vacation rental firm and took the shine off a strong quarterly profit beat.

The Easter holiday occurring in the first quarter rather than the second and currency-exchange impacts were partly to blame for Airbnb projecting current-quarter revenue below lofty Wall Street estimates.

It also forecast the growth rate of room nights booked would be relatively flat on a sequential basis, but the company's average daily rate is expected to be modestly higher year-over-year.

Normalizing leisure travel demand in the U.S. has also been a concern for investors.

"Airbnb failed to deliver a beat/raise on nights, which we believe was necessary to ease concerns about slowing growth and risk of downside to consensus estimates for accelerating growth in (the second half of 2024 and in 2025)," Jefferies analysts said.

According to BTIG analysts, Airbnb's forecast implied nights booked of about 125 million to 127 million in the second quarter. That compared with consensus estimates of 129.2 million, LSEG data showed.

"While Airbnb topped the Q1 guide, it was shy of more aggressive buyside expectations in the quarter and the Q2 outlook," BTIG's Jake Fuller wrote in a client note.

Still, some analysts noted the slump in shares was stemming from undue investor concern.

"We think the pullback is an overreaction to weaker second-quarter guidance ... the outlook for 2024 is relatively unchanged, in our view," said Morningstar analyst Dan Wasiolek.

Shares of Airbnb, which have gained 16% so far this year through last close, were at $148.23 by 1625 GMT on Thursday. They were trading about 33.31 times their forward profit estimates, compared with Booking Holdings' 19.40 multiple.

Want to Own an Airbnb? Here's What You Need to Know About Homeowners Insurance

M ore than 5 million hosts list properties on Airbnb, and there's a good reason why. In 2023 alone, Airbnb generated more than $73 billion in booking value for the accommodations listed on its platform.

Short-term rental properties can be a great way to invest in real estate and potentially have a vacation home for you and your family at the same time. But it's important to know that your standard homeowners insurance is likely not sufficient all by itself. As an owner of an Airbnb rental myself, here are three important things you need to know about insuring a short-term rental property.

Make sure your insurance company knows about it

I don't mean to be repetitive, but this headline is worth emphasizing. Make sure that if you are using a property as a short-term rental, your homeowners insurance company knows about it. If it doesn't, you could be opening yourself up to a world of liability that you don't want.

One consideration is that standard homeowners insurance typically doesn't cover damage during periods where your home is unoccupied. The main reason why it's usually more expensive to insure a vacation rental than a primary residence is that it sits vacant more often, and therefore there is a higher probability that you'll end up filing a claim (for example, a small house fire can more easily become a big fire if nobody is in the house).

Second home insurance policies are available, and these generally provide the same coverage as standard homeowners insurance. If you rent out your property (via Airbnb or otherwise), you might need a specific endorsement covering short-term rentals.

Read more: check out our picks for best homeowners insurance companies

Airbnb offers some coverage

Airbnb offers its AirCover insurance to protect hosts from damage. As of the latest information, AirCover provides up to $1 million in liability coverage and $3 million in damage protection. AirCover also offers professional deep cleaning reimbursement, and you can submit claims for reimbursement in many cases if a guest steals something from your home.

A couple of caveats. First, this coverage applies only if you list on Airbnb. If you also plan to list your rental on other platforms, be sure to check what sort of coverage (if any) applies. Some rivals offer significantly lower coverage and exclude issues like pet damage. Second, AirCover is a good insurance program for hosts, but it might not cover everything. It's important to compare what AirCover will protect you from with a homeowners policy plus a short-term rental endorsement.

Protection beyond your homeowners policy is smart

The standard homeowners insurance advice you'll hear from financial professionals is "don't skimp on coverage." But I'd go a step beyond that and suggest an umbrella policy if you're an Airbnb owner, just to make sure you're protected if something truly unfortunate happens.

One thing I do, and that could be a smart idea for anyone who owns rental properties or has a lot of assets to protect, is to get an umbrella policy . In short, umbrella insurance provides protection when the limits of your homeowners, auto insurance , and other insurance policies aren't enough to cover a loss.

For example, let's say that you own a vacation rental and your liability limit is $500,000. Something happens while the property is rented and three people are significantly injured and are suing you for $1 million. Umbrella insurance would protect you in a situation like this.

Umbrella policies are usually relatively inexpensive, because they only pay out after your other insurance is exhausted. Policies are typically issued in multiples of $1 million (I have a $2 million umbrella policy, for context). And it could provide you with the peace of mind that you're covered if the worst happens.

Make sure you are protected

The bottom line is that the standard homeowners policy is by no means sufficient if you own a vacation rental. At the very least, you'll need a short-term rental endorsement that will likely make your homeowners insurance more expensive due to the risks of vacancy, and it could be a smart idea to add an umbrella policy as well.

The most common ruse involved consumers receiving incorrect goods or nothing at all, while others were delivered an empty package or fake goods.

57% of those surveyed said they had experienced a scam on Depop.

This compares with 53% for Shpock and 51% for Preloved and Nextdoor.

Amazon Marketplace came in at 35%, while for Gumtree and eBay the figures were both 29%.

The number for Facebook and Vinted was 24% and 22%, respectively.

Rocio Concha, Which? director of policy and advocacy, said the survey’s findings were "worrying".

"It's important that people properly check the seller's reviews and profile," she said, adding that marketplaces need to have proper checks in place and ensure that scam profiles are removed quickly.

Depop told the Guardian it offered protection for buyers and sellers and was investing in new technology.

"We strongly encourage consumers who are buying and selling anywhere online never to share personal information with other users, to be very wary about following links to other sites, and to report any suspicious behaviour via in-app reporting systems."

You may remember our coverage here a few weeks back on the proliferation of scams targeting Taylor Swift fans hoping to buy tickets to see one of her current run of shows across Europe...

The Shake It Off star will hold a series of concerts in the UK as she continues her Eras tour, with the first taking place in Edinburgh on 7 June.

But the artist's megastardom has seen a huge demand for tickets, which were not cheap even before they sold out within minutes - with prices ranging from £58.65 - £194.75.

Resale prices from legitimate websites have been in the region of £700 each - with some fans reported to have spent well in excess of that to see their hero.

However, such is her popularity among an army of mostly young female devotees that the market has become a target for people seeking to exploit the widespread desperation for tickets.

As reported here, a spate of attempts had seen Facebook users' accounts hacked by scammers, who would then create seemingly genuine posts in groups on the site that the users were members of.

Initially, the posts would suggest the user was seeking to sell tickets - generally four - that were invariably just a few rows from the front of a specific venue for one of Swift's UK shows.

The price suggested in the posts was generally around £180, more expensive than the face value of most tickets, but a fraction of the cost of those being advertised on legitimate resale sites - especially for such desirable seating.

More recent instances indicate the methods being employed by scammers have since evolved and, it appears, become significantly more sophisticated.

In these more recent attempts to defraud so-called Swifties (and in many cases, the parents purchasing the tickets), the posts detail the specific rows and seat numbers.

A further departure from the previous efforts is the scammers no longer including the asking price for the (non-existent) tickets.

Both these changes were evident in one attempt Sky News has become aware of - as was another and decidedly sinister tactic.

In this case, given the number of previous scams that have flooded Facebook, the admin for the group in question first removed the post - correctly assuming it was fraudulent.

But, he told Sky News, he was subsequently sent a photo of what appeared to be the user's passport as a means of verifying her post was genuine.

This development indicates the scammer in question had used some form of photo-editing software to create an image that appeared to be of the user's passport.

"I contacted her to explain that I had deleted her post and removed her account from the group as there are so many scams around, and I could not verify their identity or the validity of the ticket offer," said Trevor Williams, who runs the local community Facebook group in Birmingham.

"Within a few minutes, I received a photo of a passport in this name and an assurance that she was genuine.

"This was enough to change my decision and the post was put it back on the group.

"Most people have no idea of the problems of being an admin on these groups, as you simply cannot win."

How can you protect yourself against these scams?

For those looking to buy resale tickets, the main advice is to simply avoid being tempted into seemingly genuine offers posted on Facebook, unless it is from someone you know and have spoken to directly (and not just over Facebook).

Those looking to sell on their tickets will invariably use the established and legitimate resale sites such as Viagogo or StubHub.

Perhaps the most useful piece of advice is an old one - if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

In terms of protecting yourself against your account on Facebook (or any social media site) being hacked by scammers, the best measure is to ensure you have enabled two-step or two-factor authentication.

This can be found through the security and privacy settings on your Facebook account, and involves the use of your telephone number or a separate authentication app on your phone whenever someone attempts to log in.

Eating ultra-processed meat is linked to an increased risk of early death.

A Harvard study over 30 years tracked more than 114,000 adults.

The highest risks were linked with the most processed meats such as sausages and ham.

Regular eaters had a 13% higher chance of dying over the 34 years tracked.

Diets high in sugary and artificially sweetened drinks had a 9% increased risk, the study found.

The used car market increased by 6.5% in the first quarter of the year , with sales of over 1.9 million vehicles, new figures show.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says the total reveals the strongest start to a year since pre-pandemic 2019.

Sales of used hybrids also increased.

That's all from an enlightening news conference in which we heard an interest rate cut in June hadn't been ruled out - and that rates could fall more than markets expect.

Scroll through to read and watch some of the key moments - meantime, we'll return to general money and consumer news.

We're now hearing the final questions of this news conference.

The governor of the Bank of England is asked if August is more likely than June to see the Monetary Policy Committee cut interest rates.

"Nice try to introduce the 'is it June' question again," Andrew Bailey says with a smile.

"We're going meeting by meeting," he adds, stressing that more data [which will be at the MPC's disposal over the coming months] will allow them more visibility and more scope to make a decision."

Our  economics editor Ed Conway  is next to ask the governor a question.

He asks whether increasing government interest in the Bank's workings has any influence on an interest rate cut.

"We [the Monetary Policy Committee] never discuss politics," Andrew Bailey replies.

"We are an independent central bank, we have a remit and it is our duty to exercise that remit at all times."

"Our remit applies at all times, so it [politics] isn't a consideration."

Asked if inflation dynamics in the UK are different to the US, Andrew Bailey says there is no law that says the US moves first on interest rate cuts and everyone else afterwards.

"There is no law," he says.

"Moreover, we have a remit and target which is related to domestic inflation in the UK.

"We're an open economy so we take the rest of the world into consideration

"But there is no law to say we can only move once the Federal Reserve (central bank of the US) moves."

There is a feeling among economists that, although the US often leads, the European Central Bank may be the first to move with an early June cut.

This could, it has been suggested, push the UK to cut on 20 June.
