3-Day Caramoan Itinerary With Side Trip To Albay For Less Than 6000 Pesos All In

This post was most recently updated on January 4th, 2018

Caramoan is a beautiful and unspoiled place. In just a day, you can go and enjoy, at least, 3 beautiful islands. Although the distance going to Caramoan can be quite long, the experience and the view are still worth every hour of travel time. Therefore, I created a perfect 3-day Caramoan itinerary for you, yes you! This will give you the opportunity to see the highlights of Caramoan with a sidetrip to Albay to see the majestic Mayon Volcano.

Considering the travel time going to Caramoan, we opted to leave Manila as early as 7pm via Philtranco Bus. We reached our first destination which is Naga City terminal around 3 am. Unfortunately, the first trip of the bus going to Caramoan already left during that day. We had to wait for the next trip which was around 6am. While waiting, we just had a porridge for breakfast and took another round of sleep.

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 1

Long travel time.

Our first day started when we left Naga City terminal. I thought it was going to be quick. Little did I know, the travel time would also take another 4-5 hours. The first hours were manageable as I was asleep, but when I woke up in the middle of the trip and realized that we were still far from the destination, I started to feel anxious and kind of irritated (I swear I’m getting used to long road but this time it tested my patience again haha). The roads going to Caramoan at that time were under construction plus the fact that the bus always stop to load and unload passengers in every barangay. It was around 11 am when we reached The Travelers Camp where we will be staying in. We just put down our things, took a brunch, then we off for the first day of the island hopping.

Finally made it! Start to explore the beautiful islands of Caramoan

First in our list was Guinahoan Island, which is the farthest island from the port. This wasn’t the prepared itinerary for us due to our late arrival but still our guides managed the time for us to see the top most beautiful islands. Talking about the weather, there’s always a high percentage of rainfall in Caramoan, I think, because of the location that is near to Pacific Ocean. Thus, weather is not that predictable. Maybe it does not hurt that much if you bring your raincoat or umbrella with you. After soaking into the amazing view of Guinahoan, we then enjoyed ourselves on the powdery-white sand of Cotivas and Manlawi sandbar. It was around 6 pm when we got back in our accommodation.

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 2

It was like almost the same setup as Day 1 except that we went to new different islands and we got the whole day just for the island hopping tour. Most of the islands that we had been to in our Day 2 Itinerary were mostly used in the reality TV show Survivors. We were so lucky at that time since it didn’t have that much people visiting Caramoan the same time with us.

Witness the two beaches at the same time while you’re in Lahos island, do rock climbing in Matukad island, and enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of Minalahos island and Cagbalinad island.

If you are a fan of visiting old churches in the Philippines, then this century old church of St. Michael the Archangel is surely worth adding to your itinerary. Do this before having your buffet dinner. Although the church is sometimes closed on weekdays. Be sure to check the schedule first.

Caramoan Itinerary: Day 3

Getting ready for next destination.

Day 3 has nothing to focus more in Caramoan since the Day 1 and Day 2 itinerary covered most of the top places in Caramoan. We just prepared our things, ate breakfast, and waited for our check out time in the inn. This time we chose port Guijalo route going back to Naga city. Boat costs 120 pesos each and it will take 2 hours going to Sabang port. The boat is kinda small but it could take up to 20+ passengers including the 6 boatmen. So the whole time we were just praying that the boat would not sink. haha! Once arrived in Sabang port, you will see vans and ask the dispatcher to lead you to vans going to Naga. Travel time is only 1 hour. We took the time to visit SM Naga city and had our lunch, too. I also recommend visiting the plaza, where you can buy souvenirs. For tourists, probably the most well-known delicacies in Bicol region are tarts and pili nuts!

Going to Cagsawa Ruins

Finish off your 3-day Caramoan vacation with a visit to one of the nearest (although that not that near) side trip which is to go to Cagsawa Ruins. From Naga city we rode a bus with a signage of Legazpi which is roughly 3 hours. Entrance in Cagsawa Ruins costs 20 pesos each, and the place is open until 6pm only. Although the Mayon Volcano didn’t show its full perfect form at that time, we just enjoyed ourselves with the food. You should definitely try the chili ice cream. It comes with different flavor however I strongly suggest the mango. I will surely come back go Albay next time when it’s not that cloudy. According to some, the Mayon shows during morning. I’ll probably consider that when I come back. There are already buses outside Cagsawa Ruins that will take you back to Manila.  We reached manila around 4am the next day.

What a beautiful location, it almost looks unreal! Caramoan and all those rock formations is somewhere I’d love to visit. What time of year did you go? I love those old Spanish churches, they’re so historic and add a charm to the place. Mango chilli ice cream sounds interetsing!

The last time I’ve seen Caramoan was still during the pre-Survivor time. This post brings back memories when we had to pitch tents at Gota Beach because there were no hotels/resorts back then. Caramoan still looks beutiful and I hope it stays that way.

There are so many beautiful islands in the Philippines and precious little time to visit them all! I love to snorkel, so I think a trip to Minalahos Island would be ideal for me. Your pictures are stunning!

Caramoan is really unspoiled like you said. Didnt follow up much on Survivors but I can make my own movie here with nature giving me its best. The islands are enchantment. And what more, these goodies can be explored in just 3 days. Everyone is complaining of weather lately, but I think its better than overcrowding. Sighs.

Wow Kevin, this is such a detailed and useful itinerary! 🙂 The place looks so pristine with its gorgeous turquoise waters and amazing islands:) Your pictures took me there! So beautiful!!

Oh my, the beaches are so gorgeous! I don’t think I would want to leave such a paradise after three days. The pictures of the Cagsawa Ruins is breathtaking, lovely shot Kevin. I would love to explore these pristine blue beaches, the place looks so untouched and relaxing.

The various islands are the key highlight here and I particularly loved Cagbalinad Island. Mysterious is how it looks. Plenty to do here for three days, I fear they might be less. Thanks for the detailed itinerary,

I just like the overall rustic, old world charm and feel of Caramoan. Great street photography I must say! Love the color of the sky and rays coming out of cloud beyond the Cagsawa Ruins.

Every island is so beautiful. I am going crazy seeing these stunning pictures of island hopping in Philippines. I haven’t been to this country till date, but I m going to put Caramoan on my list. Thank you for providing the detailed itinerary. It’s helpful.

[…] decided to visit to Caramoan? Here’s your guide and a perfect 3-day Caramoan itinerary for […]

I love the locations! 🙂 How are they so empty? Where are all the tourists? ))

we were just so lucky that there’s not much tourists on that day. 🙂

How about your accommodation? How much?

Hi! It’s already included in the island hopping tour of 2,600 pesos with free meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Hi what’s the name of the place of you accomodation? May I ask for contact details?

Also, Ilan kayo nagtour? Same rate ba if 2 lang kami?

Thanks sir!

It’s called Traveler’s Inn. My review for the said accommodation is also linked to this post. I think it will also vary depending on the number of people, but I guess it’s not that much.

I’ve heard so much about Caramoan that it has been on my bucketlist for ages. Will really need to convince my husband to go as I know long hours of travel doesn’t really suit him. LOL. But I think Caramoan is very much worth the long hours! 🙂

I’m planning to visit caramoan one on my bucket list .Thanks for the information 3 days wow gotta go now.

You should go now. haha! Enjoy your trip!

Sir kevin may i ask what month kayo nagtour sa Caramoan? Thanks a lot!!! Hoping for you rply

CARAMOAN ISLANDS: 2D1N Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary To The Enchanting Islands Of Survivors

Caramoan at a glance.

Survivor has been around since I was a teen. It’s the first reality TV series to open my eyes to the wonders of the world and got me aching to see them. Not only did the series show me how it is to live amidst challenges but it made me dream my own adventures, 6-pack abs, perfect hair, tan and all (LMAO). There is no denying that the series showcased some of the most jaw dropping and enchanting destinations in the world. Their beauty is totally raw and riveting which made the show all the more interesting. Surprisingly, among these destinations, two are found in the Philippines. First is Palaui Island , then the other is Caramoan Islands.

Caramoan Islands just gave us another reason to visit the gorgeous Bicolandia. It reminds us that other than the majestic Mayon Volcano and their delicious spicy dishes, the province is also home to some of the most stunning and pristine islands. Among them is Calaguas Islands which is as dreamy as Boracay , and then there’s Caramoan Islands which just took the game to the next level having the Survivor Series on its belt. My curiosity for this place was insatiable and having to wait for over a decade to finally visit didn’t help at all. Gladly, Caramoan didn’t disappoint and my heart couldn’t have been more grateful.

GETTING TO KNOW THE ISLANDS OF CARAMOAN

The waters of Caramoan is dotted by more than 10 gorgeous islands but only about 7 of them are available for touring most of the time. The tour is also divided into two parts, the short and the long tours. Let me share with you the islands we visited.

  • Guinahoan Island – Who says you need to spend a fortune to experience the feels that rolling hills and thundering coastal rapids emanate? Here in Caramoan, Guinahoan is just the perfect island if you are looking to experience that much coveted Batanes-feels.
  • Manlawi Island – If you just can’t get enough of that patch of sand to frolic in under the sun, then you might find comfort in Manlawi Island and its vast sandbar. This island is just a little difficult though as the sandbar only appears during low tide. However, don’t fret if you happen to miss it as the alternative is even more alluring. With several cottages floating over a pool of clear turquoise water, you are surely in for a treat as if you are in The Maldives.
  • Cotivas Island & Sandbar – You’ll eventually get your share of sugary white sands in Cotivas Island as its sandbar is not going away no matter what time of the day. Here, you’ll get to enjoy a sumptuous meal and a bottle or two of beer while being entertained by the shimmering blue waters around.
  • Sabitang Laya – Jagged limestone rock formations surrounding clear blue waters will surely remind you of Coron and El Nido but Caramoan has Sabitang Laya Island for that matter. This island is dubbed as the “Survivor Island” since this is the very island being used by the show.
  • Lahus Island – Things are definitely better when they come in two. Yeah? In Lahus Island, you’ll get to enjoy two beaches at the same time. The island is technically a sandbar connecting two limestone hills which created two different shores for you to enjoy.
  • Matukad Island – We all have a thing of looking for powdery white sands in any beach that we go to. It’s like the very standard we have much to our fondness of Boracay which have no doubt set the bar high. In Caramoan, Matukad is your kind of island if you long to feel that velvety and silky smooth sands against your feet. It also features a lagoon which is home to an enchanted bangus.
  • Cagbanilad & Minalahos Islands – These two islands feature beautiful white sand beaches bound by limestone rocks. However, what I found more interesting are the waters in between these two which is home to some colorful corals and various fishes and is perfect if you love to snorkel.

OUR 2D1N CARAMOAN ITINERARY

We left Manila 5PM Friday. You might think it was kind of early but it’s actually the ideal departure time in order to reach Caramoan before 6AM. We only had two days to enjoy the islands so we might as well make the most out of it and see them all. For this trip, we had the tour, accommodation and food arranged with a local coordinator, Whing Fernandez. Here’s how it all went down.

Day 1 - A Day Filled With So Many Beautiful Islands

We arrived in Caramoan at 5:30AM. At 6AM, we met with Kuya Whing and went to settle our stuff in our humble accommodation. A few minutes later, we had breakfast at a nearby eatery and finally at 8AM, the island hopping tour began. We visited Guinahoan Island first where we trekked for a good 10 minutes to see the lighthouse and the promising Batanes-like views. A little over an hour, we went down and had a quick snack. We then proceed to Manlawi Sandbar. The water had already risen and the sandbar had transformed into a vast pool of shimmering blue dotted by floating cottages. It was still a delightful sight though, that we spent a good time snapping photos in our camera. We then proceed to our third island, Cotivas, where we had lunch.

We had a filling and sumptuous lunch, consists of crabs, prawns, fish and lots of steamed rice, while basking at the crystal blue waters surrounding Cotivas Island. We then went for a dip under the midday sun for one good hour before we headed out to see the next island. Lahus Island was beautiful however it was a little crowded for our taste that we didn’t stay long. We instead went to Matukad Island and here spent most of our time relishing the finest of its sands and the scenic views around. Some of my friends went trekking to see the lagoon while I stayed and enjoyed eating halo-halo as I tried to get enough of the goodness of Matukad Island. It was about 4PM when we left Matukad and went to see our last two islands which were also amazing however we chose to spend the rest of the tour snorkeling.

I can’t believe how abundant were waters in Caramoan. I was in total awe while swimming among the colorful fishes of various kinds. There were lots of sea stars and urchins too. The corals weren’t as colorful as I hoped they would be but they sure gave me the chills that I only feel while immersed in raw and untouched environment. If only the current weren’t as rough as they were, I would have loved to swim longer but it was getting late and we badly needed to head back to the town before the seas become wild. It was almost sundown when we finished the tour. I somehow felt discontent and craving for more. The tour seemed a bit rush but it was worth it. Guess, we just need to stay longer next time.

Day 2 - Encounter With A 400-Year Old Church & Farewell Caramoan

The next day we woke up to a delicious breakfast consist of sunny eggs, sausages, dried fish, garlic rice and coffee. When we finished, our friends went to shower and some went to pack up their stuff. I thought waiting for my turn to shower would take a while so I instead went for a stroll. I walked to the far end of the beach where the sea meets the river. The morning breeze was calming. The views were spectacular! I couldn’t help but wonder what else could we do should we decide to stay longer. Last night’s drinking and videoke sesh left me smiling from ear to ear. “I’m with an amazing company,” I thought. If only we were not limited to weekend trips, I would really love to spend more time with them.

We checked out of the inn and went to see an old church at 9AM. It was a 400-yr old church they say. I was blown away when I finally got to see it. The mere sight of it instantly took me back in time, to an era when life was simple and traditions were a thing. I imagined those times when women used to wear elegant ternos and hide their giggles behind their colorful fans. I couldn’t help but entertain myself with a thought of an epic romance, like Romeo and Juliet sans the tragedy, taking place in this old church like it was their safe haven or their sweet little piece of paradise. Haha! I gotta hand it over to St. Michael Church as it was really beautiful to be toying with my imagination about silly romance.

Leaving was such a bum. It’s probably one of the most awful feelings and turns out, I wasn’t the only one. We all never wanna leave but we didn’t have a choice. Caramoan is one of life’s simple joys but our reality is in Manila. Work is in Manila. Oh well! So much for adulting , bills and the responsibilities that we could only sigh as we bid Caramoan goodbye, with hopes of seeing it again. Soon.

HOW TO GO TO CARAMOAN

Useful travel tips.

  • It’s important to arrange your tour, accommodation and food with a local coordinator ahead, especially if you’re going there on a limited time. Kuya Whing Fernandez will be able to take care of that for you.
  • If you’re going there with your group of maybe 10 people, renting a van would be more convenient. Total travel time would be cut short to 10 hours or less.
  • Drive carefully as the roads leading to Paniman, Caramoan are a bit treacherous especially during the night. There are bumps as some parts have holes or are totally destroyed.
  • If you only have a weekend to spare for Caramoan, you should leave Manila and start your travel at 4PM Friday, so you would arrive in Paniman before 6AM, giving you time to settle your stuff and eat breakfast before going on your island hopping.
  • The island hopping tour is divided in two with different touring rates. First is the short tour which includes the nearest islands, Matukad, Lahus, Cagbanilad and Minalahos. The other is the long tour for the islands Guinahoan, Manlawi, Sabitang Laya and Cotivas. You can also club these islands in a one day tour.
  • During days with rough and unfriendly seas, island hopping tour may be suspended. Only when the gale warning is lifted will you be allowed to go on tour.
  • Gota Village is one spot you don’t wanna miss while in Caramoan. It’s a little pricey but it is worth the experience. Note that it will sometimes be off-limits during months when it is being used by the survivor franchise.
  • Caramoan is not just about beautiful islands. You can also have an adventure exploring the pristine Manapot River and Umang Cave.
  • Take the time to explore the town of Caramoan. Don’t miss a visit to the St. Michael The Archangel Church. This awesome piece of architecture built in the 1600s screams so much history and nostalgia.

Travel Guide: Caramoan

caramoan albay tour

Caramoan, a group of islands in the north-eastern portion of Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region is best known for being the filming location of several seasons of the hit reality show Survivor. The international TV show often chooses exotic locales with stunning scenery. With the clusters of islands lined with white sand beaches, deep gorges, limestone cliffs, coral reefs, diverse marine life, serene lagoons, subterranean river and caves, it’s easy to see why the production crew keeps choosing to film here.

Table of Contents

WHERE EXACTLY IS CARAMOAN:

Caramoan Peninsula is located in the lower eastern part of the province of Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. It is surrounded by the waters of the Maqueda Channel on the north and east and Lagonoy Gulf on the south. Though it’s part of Camarines Sur, geographically the town proper and islands are closer by sea travel from the island province of Catanduanes.

For the longest time, Caramoan was previously only accessible by sea travel because of rough roads. Those traveling with cars and motorcycles will be happy to know that as of 2018, the mainland town of Caramoan is accessible by land travel from Naga City, roughly 3-4 hours away through the newly constructed Fuentabella Highway. The province of Camarines Sur itself is an 8-12 hour drive from Manila through the provinces of Rizal, Quezon and Camarines Norte.

  • Take Gov. Jose T. Fuentabella National highway to Salogon Route in Tigaon
  • Continue to San Jose
  • Drive to Gov. Felix A. Fuentabella National Highway / Presentacion Caramoan Road
  • You can park your vehicles near the port area or in your chosen resort in town and take a boat from Bikal Port for island-hopping tours

By public transportation

Option 1: Via Naga (Plane or bus from Manila to Naga + Bus from Naga to Caramoan)

  • By air: Fly from Manila to Naga City. From the Naga City airport, take a taxi or van to the van terminal beside SM City Naga.
  • By land: Ride a bus from Araneta-Cubao Bus Terminal or Pasay Bus Terminal to Naga City (Bus fare ranges from P650-1,000 depending on the bus company and class).
  • You can book bus tickets online at Bicol Isarog Lines. https://bicolisarog.com/
  • Travel time usually takes 8-10 hours. Buses depart every night at around 8:30 – 9:00 pm and arrive in the Bicol Central Station/Naga City Central Bus Terminal between 4:00 am to 6:00 am.

Option 3: Via Catanduanes (Plane or RoRo Bus to Virac + Boat ride to Caramoan)

Unknown to many, the fastest and most direct route to Caramoan is via Catanduanes. There are RoRo Buses going from Manila to Virac, but for those who don’t like long land travel and want to travel by air, this is the best option.

  • You can fly directly from Manila to Virac , Catanduanes. Cebu Pacific has 4 flights a week leaving 6:55 am and arriving at 8:00 am. Travel time is 1 hour and 5 minutes.
  • From the Virac airport, ride a tricycle to Codon port or van going to Pandan and get off at the Codon Port in San Andres. Travel time is about 1 hour.
  • At the Codon port, charter a boat going to Caramoan. Travel time is 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions.
  • You can charter boats for island-hopping tours to Caramoan directly from Codon Port in Catanduanes. Boat rental ranges from P2,500 to P3,000 per day.

Option 4: Via Albay (Plane or Bus to Legazpi + Ferry to Catanduanes + Boat to Caramoan)

GETTING AROUND:

Within the town proper, tricycles are the main mode of transportation. Fare costs P10.00 to nearby destinations. From the town proper of Caramoan, you will need to charter a boat from the Bikal Port at Brgy. Paniman to get around. From Bikal Port, island-hopping trips usually range P1,500 to P4,000 (good for 6 pax) per day depending on the number and distance of the islands you plan to visit. If you’re staying in Tugawe Cove Resort, they have hassle-free island-hopping packages and boats you can rent from there as well.

WHERE TO GO IN CARAMOAN:

The best thing to do in Caramoan is to go island-hopping and visit all the beaches and islands scattered on the coast. Below are just some of the spots that I’ve been able to visit on three separate trips (2012, 2016 and 2018). Some spots may not be visited if the show Survivor is being filmed, or due to varying weather conditions or tide levels. Choose which islands you want to visit to maximize your time.

caramoan albay tour

Matukad Island:  A small island with fine white sand and prominent limestone cliffs. The area has three beaches and a lagoon. Because of its proximity to Paniman, this is one of the more popular islands in Caramoan.

Matukad Lagoon: One of the main attractions here is Matukad Lagoon, a small lake known for being the home to “giant milkfish” or bangus swimming around the water, which locals say appeared magically in the lagoon. Getting a view of the lagoon involves a bit of cliff scrambling.

Lahos Island:  A stretch of fine white sand shore facing opposite sides sandwiched between two identical rock formations. During high-tide, the beach disappears and it can only be seen again during low tide. This is where the island gets its name, as “Lahos” means to vanish.

Pitogo Island:  Pitogo Island has an approximately 6-7 hectares of total land area. One side of the island is hidden in a serene almost enclosed cove where the water is so still. The water is shallow, which makes this a great spot for kids. Really beautiful and peaceful spot.

You can also opt to stay somewhere in Catanduanes and go island-hopping around Caramoan as a day trip.

TRAVEL TIPS & USEFUL INFO:

  • According to locals, the Survivor franchise has rented some of the islands for 25 years, starting 2008. If filming is ongoing, some islands may be inaccessible up to 2033.
  • Some spots can only be visited during the proper weather conditions and tide level. If you want to maximize your trip and visit as many spots as possible, start early and opt for a whole-day tour.
  • The best time to go to Caramoan is during the dry season (December to May).
  • Expect rough waves and sudden rainshowers when traveling during the months of Habagat (September, October November).
  • Check the weather forecast before you plan your trip, as island-hopping trips can be cancelled because of bad weather. The wind and waters can get pretty rough. Do not travel here if there’s a typhoon coming.
  • Help keep the place clean, by bringing all your trash. Do not litter on the islands.
  • Be prepared to get wet on the boat getting to and from Caramoan and during island-hopping. Waterproof all your belongings. Be sure to bring a dry bag for gadgets.

hi…is the land travel going caramoan safe?

Hi Alvin, what do you mean safe? There are commercial buses that pass this route now from Naga.

Hindi ba scary ang roads? I mean like zigzag tapos bangin na yung kababagsakan? But i think meron talaga noh since mga mountains talaga dadaanan. Pls share the road condition from manila going there. 🙂 Salamat in advance.

Hi Mariana, we rode a boat from Sabang port, but here’s a video of the road conditions in 2015. According to contacts from Naga Excursions who went there this month, 90% of the road is good now.

Hi! We’re planning to visit there on Friday. A friend of mine who has been there a couple of years back said there’s no snorkeling gear available for rent in Caramoan. Is this true? Would you recommend us bringing snorkeling gear? Thanks much!

Hi Jay, sorry for the late reply. Better to bring your own snorkeling gear, because while some shops rent them out, most were broken when we visited. Also, please note that some islands in Caramoan may be closed on certain days because Survivor is filming there again until June.

Hi there po,

Caramoan is really a very nice island,, been there last year pero nag stay lng kmi s accommodations s budget friendly one, “Residecia de slavation” (if i remember it correctly haha). Pero this time po we are planning to go back. Ask ko lng po, If you were to choose from Gota Village na beach area which is –Hunungan Cove or the Tugawe Resort. Alin po the best and the one you will choose without worrying about the cost. Alin po kaya s dalawa ung mag eenjoy ka ng bongga heheh ..Thanks po .. hope for your kind insight.

Hi RC, I didn’t get to stay in Gota Village. Just saw it from the boat. We stayed in Tugawe Cove Resort, which I found very nice. You can read my full review here with more photos & details on amenities.

hi, we are planning to go tomorrow in tugawe by land to guijalo port. is the road safe? since its raining for the past days, how’s the condition? are there landslides? is the road, rough?

Hello Jean. Not sure what the road conditions are like now since we went there last December via boat directly from Sabang port. Buses regularly travel the route now, and I heard it’s more accessible, though I believe there are still patches of rough road.

Check this guide .

Hi! I’d like to ask how much ang price range ng island tours offered by Tugawe Cove. Thanks and happy holidays 🙂

Hi J.D., during the time of our visit in December 2015, island-hopping trips rates were P3,500 (half-day) P5,000 (whole day) and P7,000 (long trip). Maximum of 8-10 persons per boat.

Hi, How’s Residencia de salvation? we are planning to stay there on jan 30 up to feb . as gota village is not available due to ty thank you

Hi. Ask lang san pede mg stay near guinahoan island? Since yung mga ksama nmen ay don mg stay but we opted na bumukod dahil walang supply ng kuryente don during day time.. Thanks..?

Hi Shy, sorry I have no idea since I haven’t stayed there.

Hey thanks for your blog post. This helped us get through our first DIY Caramoan escapade. 🙂

Hi Camilla, glad you found my post useful. Looks like you guys had a great time island-hopping. Will refer to your blogpost next time someone asks for hotel recommendations on the mainland. 🙂

Hi ! Would you know if the road from Caramoan town proper to Paniman ( jump off to nearby beaches ) are fully paved? The resort I want to stay is over there ( Island View Resort). And I plan to use a street motorcycle to go there.

Hi Christian, sorry for the late reply. I asked around with some contacts based in Naga and was told that as of June 2017, the road to Paniman in Caramoan town proper is now fully paved. So you should be able to get there with a street motorcycle 🙂 Enjoy your trip!

Hey, just wondering, do you know if there’s a public boat from Caramoan to Codon Port or do you have to charter one? 🙂

Magkano po bayad sa boat pag pupunta kaming ibang isla? Sa mismong caramoan bounderies lang po ba pwedeng mag stay or may mga isla ring pwedeng mag stay ng overnight. Thaanks!

Hi Ericson, please check out this guide for more options where to stay. The boats usually cost P1,500-P2,500 good for 6-10 pax. It really depends on the size of the boat and yung islands na pupuntahan ninyo. Malayo kasi yung iba.

Hi Claire, I can’t find any information on public boats from Caramoan to Codon Port and vice versa. I think most people really just charter a special trip, which costs around P2,000 or up depending on the size of boat and the headcount of participants.

Hi Ms. Kara. We will be going to Caramoan this Dec1 and 2. But we will be coming from Legazpi. Do you know how much is the bus fare from Legazpi to Naga?

Also, do we need to secure a tour package for island hopping in Caramoan or there are lot of boats there with cheaper prices? How much would be the boat for 7 pax?

Thank you so much. Your site is a great help!

Hi Jayson. Here’s a detailed commuting guide how to get to Caramoan including from Legazpi. And here’s a tour agency that offers package tours with budget breakdown per pax indicated.

Hi, nice post. We are planning go to tugawe cove resort. I plan on a a road trip coming from Laguna as this would be a good opportunity to pass by all the places to visit in the Bicol region. I have been looking for an access road to tugawe kahit rough roads, meron ba? If wala, where would you suggest to have my vehicle parked safely for a couple of days while we are in the resort? Can I bring a couple of mountain bikes to the resort? ( will the boats accommodate this?) May mga trails ba sa tugawe to explore? Thanks in advance. More power!

Hi Joel. As far as I know, the only access to Tugawe Cove Resort is by boat. Most people with vehicles park at the Sabang Port before taking the boat to the resort. It’s actually very nice to bike around the mainland of Caramoan in the town proper (around the highway and rice fields, but that’s quite far from Tugawe). You might have a hard time bringing your bike to Tugawe. There’s a short trail going up to the lighthouse that you could bike to, but getting around the resort mostly involves steep roads and/or stairs, so it’s not very practical to bring a bike.

Meron kaming dala kotse tanong ko lang from sabang port to caramoan how much yung boat and pwd ba kami maglagay ng tent?

Hi! You mentioned hiring a boat from Codon port to Caramoan and that travel time is 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions. However, I can’t seem to find any details on the price for the boat ride from Codon to Caramoan. You only mentioned the price for boat rental for island hopping trips, which range from P2,500 to P3,000. Hope you can help. Thanks!

Hi, we are planning to by next week. Is it really possible to go from Manila to Caramoan Isalnd via private vehicle? No more boat ride since we have a baby and a kids with us?

Thanks, Ann

Hi Anna, it is now possible to drive all the way from Manila to the town/poblacion of Caramoan via private vehicle since that’s still on the mainland. However, you really have to ride a boat if you plan to go island-hopping. Please refer to Googlemaps I embedded in the post.

Hi, I wish I could also travel as what you did, Thank you for bringing the beauty of nature close to our heart.

Caramoan Travel Guide: Tourism Gem of Camarines Sur

Caramoan

About Caramoan

Caramoan is a paradise in the farthest coast of Camarines Sur, hidden in underdeveloped and rural soil where white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, beautiful and islets are common scenery.

A peninsular town, Caramoan is a group of islands and islets scattered in the Pacific Ocean, endowed with nature’s beauty and preserved by its seclusion.

Caramoan

The place is made famous by the hit global reality show franchise “Survivor” and became a favorite shooting location due to numerous islands with fine white sand, lagoons, caves, limestone cliffs and rocks, and rich marine life that give a new definition to an island experience. But even before the “Survivor” series, there was already Caramoan – beautifully unspoiled and unexploited.

With its natural beauty and rich history, Caramoan stands proud as a real tourism gem of Bicolandia that holds a promise of a perfect tropical island adventure!

Come south! Cam Sur! Caramoan!

Caramoan Islands by CaramoanIslands.com

How to Get to Caramoan

Although not far from other popular destinations in Bicol, getting to Caramoan and the Caramoan Islands isn’t easy. The geology is mountainous, and the roads are challenging once you leave the populated areas.

The best way to see the Caramoan is by boat. Take a tour or hire a boat that can take you to the many small islands to swim, snorkel, or fish.

But first, you’ll want to fly or take a ferry into Naga. From Manila, Naga is only 45 mins by plane, making it easy for international travelers to make the trip. But if you’re traveling between Naga and Legaspi already, you can reach Naga/Pili from Guijalo Port, which takes between 3 and 4 hours. Nato Port also has an option that takes about 4 hours, but you should check the schedule to make sure boats are going.

From Manila

Manila is the most popular starting point for travelers visiting Caramoan. There are several ways to get to Caramoan from Manila:

Caramoan Travel Tips

When planning a trip to Caramoan, remember a few things to make the most of your experience. Here are some essential travel tips to help you prepare for your trip.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Caramoan is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. The weather is generally sunny and dry during this time, making it ideal for island hopping and beach activities. However, remember that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, you can visit during the rainy season from June to October. While it may rain frequently during this time, you can still enjoy the natural beauty of Caramoan, and you may even get better deals on accommodations and activities.

Environmental Fee

When visiting Caramoan, you must pay an environmental fee of PHP 75 per person. This fee goes towards maintaining and preserving the area’s natural resources. Be sure to always keep your receipt with you, as you may be asked to present it when exploring the islands.

What to Bring

Here are some essential items to bring with you on your Caramoan trip:

  • Sunscreen: The sun can be intense, so be sure to bring sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect your skin.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be a problem, especially during the rainy season, so bring insect repellent to keep them at bay.
  • Lightweight clothing: Caramoan is a tropical destination, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the heat.
  • Water shoes: Some of the beaches and islands have rocky terrain, so a pair of water shoes can come in handy.
  • Cash: While some establishments accept credit cards, bringing cash as a backup is still good. There are no ATMs on the islands, so get enough cash for your entire trip.

Remembering these travel tips, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip to Caramoan.

Best Travel Guide to Caramoan Islands – Philippines Hidden Gem 2024

Sharing is caring!

Thousands of idyllic tropical islands make up the Philippines. However, the most famous (Boracay, Cebu, and Palawan) are now overrun with tourists.

Off the beaten track, unspoilt, and above all, the Philippines’ last frontier, the Caramoan Islands are a secluded and largely unexplored area in the region of Bicol .

If you’re looking for pristine beaches, powdery-white sands, marine life and stunning rock formations, then this far flung jewel on the edge of the Camarines Sur is your ideal hidden gem in Asia .

Where is Caramoan Island in the Philippines?

The Caramoan Islands are located on the North-Eastern portion of Camarines Sur in the Bicol region of the Philippines.

Whilst the journey doesn’t look far on a map, it took us half a day to get to the Caramoan Islands from Manila, and the journey included multiple modes of transport.

How to get to Caramoan Islands Philippines

Our day began at 2.30am, we headed to the airport and boarded an hour long flight to Legazpi at 5am, then drove three hours to Sabang Port before riding the waves on a speedboat for another two hours.

We finally arrived and were welcomed by a spectacular view of Tugawe cove and a traditional Bicolano lunch .

Not for the faint hearted, the journey to the Caramoan Islands certainly is laborious compared to travel around the rest of the Philippines.

However the inaccessibility ensures the islands white sand beaches and turquoise waters remain unknown to most.

For instance, during the two nights we spent in the Caramoan, we didn’t come across any other foreign tourists .

For this reason coupled with the journey length, I suggest spending at least three nights in this unspoilt region, to really get the chance to explore the Caramoan Philippines and all its secret beaches.

There are several ways to go to Caramoan from Manila:

Travel by land to the Caramoan Islands from Manila

Caramoan Island can be reached by bus or car from Manila.

The journey will from Manila will take between 8-12 hours to reach Naga City.

Then another 1.5 hour drive to Sabang Port followed by a 1.5-2 hour speedboat ride to Caramoan Bicol. Total journey between 11-15.5 hours

Travel by plane to the Caramoan Islands from Manila

There are three different ways to get to Caramoan Island from Manila.

Below details the journey times and details of the Caramoan location.

  • QUICKEST: Fly 1 hour to Virac airport , then drive 1 hour to Codon Port followed by a 30 minute speedboat ride. Total journey time around 2.5 hours but with only only four flights a week, you need to be flexible.
  • Fly 1 hour to Legazpi , then drive 3 hours to Sabang Port followed by a 1.5-2 hour speedboat ride. Total journey between 5.5 – 6 hours
  • Fly 1 hour to Naga airport , then drive 1.5 – 2 hours to Sabang Port followed by a 1.5-2 hour speedboat ride. Total journey between 4 – 5 hours

Where to Stay in the Caramoan Island Philippines

We spent two nights at the beautiful Tugawe Cove Resort .

Located at the tip of Camarines Sur peninsula.

The resort has a private beach , infinity swimming pool with sea views, rooms with WIFI, flat screen TVs and DVD players, and a lake which runs through the property.

Moreover, water sport equipment such as paddle boards, kayaks and snorkelling gear are included for free for guests , and there is a private beach in front of the resort.

In addition if you want to relax then there is a very reasonably priced spa on the property, I had a 60 minute full body massage for only ÂŁ6.

Importantly, there are only 23 cabanas in all, located beside the lake, on the hillside, and on the hilltop.

As a result, the resort feels even more private as the guests are spread out over the property.

To facilitate transport around Tugawe , there are golf buggies available to take you around the resort if you don’t fancy walking up the steep hills.

Top Things to do in the Caramoan Islands Philippines

1. island hopping around the caramoan islands.

The Caramoan Islands are a secret Filipino paradise, little visited by backpackers and tourists.

With impossibly white beaches and clear waters, there are incredible opportunities for Caramoan Island hopping tours .

Spending the day moving from one serene spot to the next, you’ll be blown away by the beauty.

Not to mention the fact that apart from a few local fishing families, the islands are deserted .

It’s certainly no wonder Caramoan’s remoteness attracted the makers of the popular reality TV show Survivor , and why the producers keep coming back to film further series on the Caramoan beach.

Our island hopping boat trip lasted the whole day and we were provided with a picnic, snorkelling equipment and towels.

In one day we could only visit a handful of the Caramoan Islands, however if we had the opportunity to stay longer, we would have visited Matukad Island , Cagbalinad Island , Hunongan Cove , and Sabitang Laya , as they are some of the best Caramoan beaches.

2. Experience Sunset at Tugawe Cove’s Lighthouse

A mere 10 minutes from the reception of Tugawe Cove (5 minutes on a golf buggy followed by a 5 minute uphill walk) transports you to the unused lighthouse on the island.

There lies an enchanting spot overlooking the surrounding islands and villages.

The perfect place for a picnic and panoramic view from this secluded hilltop area and certainly a gem of the Caramoan Islands.

3. Sundowners by Tugawe Cove’s Infinity Pool

For those of you who are like me and prefer a pool to the beach, the view from the resort’s infinity pool was pretty hard to beat.

There’s nothing quite like peering out over the tropical waves, counting how many deserted islands you can see in the distance.

On the one hand, any time of day is great for a swim.

However, this Caramoan sunset spot was particularly beautiful especially with a tropical cocktail or fresh coconut in hand. Bliss!

4. Put on your Water Shoes and explore the islands in Caramoan Philippines

The turquoise waters surrounding the Caramoan Islands are incredible.

As a result, I’d definitely recommend taking full advantage of the location and hiring a kayak, stand up paddle board, or snorkelling equipment.

To get a real Caramoan experience, make sure you explore the hidden coves, as it’s unlikely you’ll come across anyone else on your expedition!

Also note that if you stay at Tugawe Cove resort , watersport equipment is included for free !

Where to Visit After the Islands in Caramoan Philippines

Caramoan is located in the Camarines Sur region of Bicol in the Philippines .

The capital of Bicol is Legazpi City , and is another great tourist destination to visit in Albay and the journey from Legazpi to Caramoan island takes only three hours.

Legazpi City is famed for being home to Mount Mayon, the Philippines most active volcano.

Legazpi City is therefore the adventure capital of the Philippines, and includes zip lining and quad biking amongst the adrenaline fuelled activities it offers.

If you are more of a beach bum and want to stick to island hopping, maybe one of the beautiful islands in Asia will take your fancy.

3 Days Caramoan Itinerary – Solo DIY Tips & Guide

The commute to Caramoan takes at least four hours from Naga City, Camarines Sur. Two hours land trip from Naga City to Sabang Beach and another two-hour ferry (pumpboat) ride going to Guijalo Port in Caramoan. After quick morning tour of Naga City, I took a tricycle to the FILCAB terminal located across SM City Naga. The (L300) van left Naga City at 8:15am and arrived in Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur by 10am. Sabang Beach was just a couple of steps from where the van dropped us off. Looking around the long gray sand beach, it was easy to find the makeshift ferry waiting area since many of the passengers were already huddled together in that section of the beach.

Naga City to Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur

Ferry from sabang beach to guijalo port, caramoan.

I waited for another 45 minutes until the ferry boat arrived in Sabang. The beach went into chaos as the arriving passengers were about to disembark. Several porters went into a frenzy as they rushed to the side of the boat and boisterously tried to catch the attention of the alighting passengers. As soon as the first passenger got off, I realized what was happening. Since the boat was still a couple of meters from the beach (in waist deep waters), the passengers had to be carried over the shoulder of the porters in order to avoid getting wet. Oh Shit! It meant we also had to do it to get on the boat.

I was anxiously standing at the shoreline not sure how to go about the porter selection process. Apparently, one of the porters had already chosen me and signaled that he had to load my backpack on the boat first. On the off chance that he’d get out balanced, I’d have all of my stuff wet including a few electronic devices. Seeing him carrying my bag above his head and wading through the wait-deep waters was excruciating enough, now, I’d have to undergo the ordeal myself. I wasn’t really afraid to get wet … it was my camera, which I carry on my sling bag, I was worried about. It’s like … the most expensive thing I own, and I’d saved up months for it. Anyways, when the porter got in front of me, he turned the other way and bent on one knee (kinda like the typical position during an engagement proposal … only backwards). I positioned both of my legs over his shoulders with his head, you know, between my thighs. The porter then stood up and struggled a bit to keep balance. It was so awkward to be carried by some random dude like that. The experience was quite emasculating :(

Finding a place to stay in Caramoan

Most tourists stay at the town center or “centro” of Caramoan. It’s in an inconvenient location for most since it’s landlocked and requires a tricycle/single motorcycle ride to get to Bikal Beach and Paniman Beach, the main jump-off points to the Caramoan Islands. I stayed at Rex Tourist Inn after reading a lot of positive online reviews. They have single rooms rented out for P300 per night (fan-cooled; shared TB). I loved my stay at Rex Tourist Inn since they had free WiFi. I wanted to visit Lake Bulusan on my last day in Bicol … it was a last minute decision and I didn’t know how to get there. Having internet access helped a lot :D

I also had my laundry done there for P80 (my clothes were well under 1 kilo, so I guess it’s their minimum rate). I give Rex Tourist Inn my “highly recommended for budget travelers” stamp!

Around Caramoan Centro

I had (late) lunch at a carinderia (local eatery) named Lutong Bahay located near Rex Tourist Inn. It ate there the whole time I was in Caramoan since it was cheap. A meal costs only around P50. Their Bicol Express was my daily staple :) It was nice to be able to eat the more authentic version of Bicol Express …. oh wait! Of course, it has to be authentic, I was still in Bicol. Their Bicol Express was kinda different from the ones I tasted in Legazpi and Naga, though.

Since I arrived in Caramoan late in the afternoon and didn’t notice any tourist groups during the ferry ride, it seemed unlikely that I would find a group, who’d be willing to let me join their island hopping tour of the islands. I walked around town hoping to find other tourists but didn’t find any  … probably because I went to Caramoan during low season (on a weekday) and the tourists that arrived that day were probably already off in the islands.

Booking an Island Hopping Tour of Caramoan Islands

I eventually inquired at one of the souvenir shops in town about the island hopping tours. They told me they could arrange the tour for me since the shop owner’s father owns a boat at Paniman Beach. There are two main island groups in Caramoan. I’m not sure what their formal names are but they’re known as the “Matukad Island Group” and the “Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group.” Both are located at a considerable distance from each other (probably 30 minutes by boat). Bikal Beach, situated at the mainland is the main jump-off point to Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group. While Paniman Beach is the main jump-off point to Matukad Island Group.

I was quoted a rate of P1,500 to visit the “Matukad group of islands,” P2,000 for “Sabitang Laya/Manlawi island group,” and P3,000 to visit 9 islands covering both island groups. My gosh, so expensive considering I’d have to pay for everything myself. Of course, I couldn’t leave Caramoan without going to any of its famed islands. I hope I still have enough cash to get back to the city … there aren’t any ATMs in Caramoan if I spent too much.

It was already mid-afternoon, too late to go island hopping. Spent two nights in Caramoan so I’d have a full day for the island hopping the next day.

DIY trip to Camarines Sur Tips

  • Naga City to Sabang Beach, San Jose, Camarines Sur Van (2 hours) – P90 per person
  • Tip for the porter “shoulder back ride” – P25 per person(no set rate, tip as you please)
  • Guijalo Port to Caramoan Centro Tricycle – P50 per person(not sure how much the actual fare was but I think I saw the locals paying P20/P30 only)
  • Single fan room with shared TB – P300 per night (x2 nights = P600)
  • Laundry – P80 (minimum)
  • Bicol Express + 2 rice – P40
  • Pork Steak + 1 rice + coke  – P40
  • Fried Chicken + 1 rice (packed lunch for island hopping tour) – P60 (x2 incase I get too hungry, haha = P120)
  • Caramoan souvenir t-shirt – P170
  • Whole day Caramoan island hopping tour – P1,500 (Matukad group of islands)
  • Roundtrip single motorcycle (habal-habal) ride to Paniman Beach from Caramoan Centro – P200

Hi marcos, nice pictures… I’m so excited to go there too… And I know how it feels to spend money alone =)

We are going to caramoan 2 weeks from now. We plan to have the 9 islands. Kaya ba whole day yung 9 islands (including the Lahuy Island, Cotivas Island)? And last price na ba ang P3000 for that? And may we know ano yung 9 islands na yun?

Hope you can answer my questions… dame pala…

September 9, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Kaya siya for the whole day … Better to talk to the boatman na lang :) Hanggang Matukad lang kase ako, I’m not entirely sure about the other islands.
