Max + Iggor Cavalera Announce U.S. Tour Celebrating Two Classic Sepultura Albums

Iconic metal frontman  Max Cavalera  ( Soulfly , Cavalera Conspiracy , ex- Sepultura ) and his drummer brother  Igor "Iggor" Cavalera  (Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Sepultura) will tour the United States this summer with a celebratory set of classic Sepultura material in honor of the Brazilian band's classic albums Beneath the Remains  (1989) and Arise (1991).

Both Cavaleras were founding members of Sepultura. Max departed in 1996, followed by Iggor a decade later. Max started Soulfly in 1997 and has since moonlighted in  Killer Be Killed  and Nailbomb. Iggor, who also played in Nailbomb and Strife, started Cavalera Conspiracy with his brother in 2007.

See the Cavalera brothers' upcoming tour dates down near the bottom of this post.

The Cavaleras revealed in a statement on Monday (March 7), "Announcing the 'Max & Iggor Cavalera 89/91 tour' — celebrating the legendary albums Beneath the Remains and Arise ." It continued, "The original founding members of influential RIAA gold-certified Brazilian heavy metal legend Sepultura, Max and Iggor Cavalera, will celebrate the legendary albums Beneath the Remains and Arise by performing a hybrid setlist exclusively with songs from both albums, throughout the United States, in May and June of 2022."

The Cavaleras prepped concertgoers for the retrospective U.S. trek in 2020 when Max said, "We are just paying tribute to our old records. We played [1996's]  Roots for a while, and last year, we did a lot of Beneath the Remains and Arise together, and that was great."

He added, "Those records are so iconic; they're masterpieces of that era. So we're gonna do more of that."

Max and Iggor Cavalera to Celebrate Classic Sepultura Albums with 2022 “Return Beneath Arise” US Tour

Max and Iggor Cavalera are celebrating the classic Sepultura albums Beneath the Remains and Arise with a 2022 US tour.

Billed as the “Return Beneath Arise” tour, the outing will see the founding Sepultura members playing a hybrid setlist of tracks from their iconic 1989 and 1991 LPs.

The tour kicks off May 22nd in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and runs through a June 25th show in Tempe, Arizona. Highlights include an appearance at Maryland Deathfest and a date at the Gramercy Theater in New York City. Get tickets via Ticketmaster .

“After Covid-19 us Metal Heads need to release our aggression with some Beneath the Remains and Arise !” stated Max Cavalera in a press release.

Iggor Cavalera added: “Can’t wait to perform our “Return Beneath Arise” tour for our North American fans. See you in the Pit!!!”

Beneath the Remains and Arise are widely considered Sepultura’s finest albums and two of the greatest thrash/death metal releases of all-time. The band was on the forefront of the transition from thrash to death metal in the late 1980s, with these two albums bridging that creative gap.

Sepultura have since forged a notable career without the Cavalera brothers, who went on to form other major bands such as Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, and Killer Be Billed. Separately, Sepultura have just embarked on their own North American spring tour .

Max and Igor Cavalera announce May & June 2022 US ‘Return Beneath Arise’ Tour

Cavalera US Tour 2022 poster

“Beneath The Remains/Arise tour is coming! Introducing on bass guitar, thrashing and blasting bass beast Mike Leon (Soulfly) and on lead guitar, state of the art, death/thrash expert, Daniel Gonzalez (Possessed/Gruesome). We’re gonna take these songs to the Metal world in the most brutal way ever! Under a pale gray sky, we shall Arise”, says Max Cavalera .

“We can only count with the illest players to step on stage with me and Max to play Beneath/Arise. So getting Dan Gonzalez from Possessed/Gruesome and Mike Leon from Soulfly was an amazing choice!… Can’t wait to hit the road!”, comments Iggor Cavalera .

“I am super excited to be a part of the revival of these classic albums with the brothers that created them, it is a great honor! These shows are gonna CRUSH, and I’m sure that we are gonna deliver these songs better than they have ever been played before to everyone who joins us! See you on the road!”, states Mike Leon .

“It would be an understatement to say that I am incredibly stoked and honored to be able to play with Max and Iggor, and the fact that we’ll be playing material from Beneath The Remains and Arise is beyond surreal to me since I grew up worshiping those albums. Max and Iggor helped change the standards of extreme Metal and those albums are still living proof of that. It’s insane to me as a fan and as a musician to be able to play these songs live, and I can’t wait to do them justice!!!”, mentions Daniel Gonzalez .

Since Sepultura’s formation over 30 years ago, the Cavalera brothers have each seen unparalleled success in the music industry. Max’s more recent work with Soulfly, Go Ahead And Die, Cavalera Conspiracy (also featuring Iggor) and Killer Be Killed, in addition to Iggor’s projects MIXHELL, Petbrick, and Soulwax, proves the lasting power of the Cavalera legacy.

It’s safe to say that the releases of “Beneath the Remains” (1989) and “Arise” (1991) completely changed the landscape of metal music throughout the world.

Max Cavalera states: “After Covid-19 US Metal Heads need to release our aggression with some ‘Beneath the Remains’ and ‘Arise’!”

Iggor Cavalera adds: “Can’t wait to perform our ‘Return Beneath Arise’ Tour for our North American fans. See you in the Pit!!!”

MAX And IGOR CAVALERA Announce Spring 2022 Tour Celebrating SEPULTURA's 'Beneath The Remains' And 'Arise'

Former SEPULTURA members Max Cavalera and Igor "Iggor" Cavalera will perform select tracks from the band's seminal "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" albums on a U.S. tour this spring/summer. The trek will include an appearance at this year's Maryland Deathfest , set to take place May 26-29 at several venues, including Rams Head Live, Soundstage and the Edison Lot.

The tour dates are as follows:

May 22 - Albuquerque, NM @ Sunshine Theater May 23 - Lubbock, TX @ Jake's May 24 - Dallas, TX @ Amplified Live May 25 - Little Rock, AR @ Little Rock Music Hall May 26 - Nashville, TN @ Brooklyn Bowl May 27 - Huntington, WV @ The Loud May 28 - Baltimore, MD @ Maryland Deathfest May 31 - New York, NY @ Gramercy Theatre Jun. 01 - New Haven, CT @ Toad's Place Jun. 02 - Harrisburg, PA @ XL Live Jun. 03 - Columbus, OH @ The King of Clubs Jun. 04 - Joliet, IL @ The Forge Jun. 05 - Ft. Wayne, IN @ Piere's Event Center Jun. 06 - Indianapolis, IN @ The Vogue Jun. 08 - Lincoln, NE @ Royal Grove Jun. 10 - Denver, CO @ The Oriental Theater Jun. 11 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Metro Music Hall Jun. 13 - Tacoma, WA @ Elks Temple at Spanish Ballroom Jun. 14 - Portland, OR @ Hawthorne Theater Jun. 16 - San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall Jun. 17 - San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall Jun. 18 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Belasco Jun. 21 - Austin, TX @ Come And Take It Live Jun. 22 - Houston, TX @ Scout Bar Jun. 23 - San Antonio, TX @ The Rock Box Jun. 24 - El Paso, TX @ Rockhouse Outside Jun. 25 - Tempe, AZ @ The Marquee

Max and Igor kicked off a tour celebrating "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" back in 2018. In early 2020, Max revealed plans to bring the trek to the U.S., but no dates had been announced prior to the pandemic.

In a 2018 interview with Wall Of Sound , Max stated about revisiting the "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" material on the most recent run of shows: "I had to learn those riffs again for the tour, and I had to rediscover the albums again. It was a really fun process, learning the lyrics again. I kind of fell in love with the albums again. I don't have a favorite — I like both together, and I think they're meant to be together. For some reason, they just feel right when you play them together. I was very young when I made them, so it made me very aware of my state of mind at the time. I feel like I'm pretty much the same guy. I'm [52] now, but I'm still a metalhead in the heart. I still have the teenage spirit. I'm a huge metal fan, [a] huge supporter of metal. That's just how it was when those albums were done. It's a blessing that I get to do that with my brother, especially after all we went through together and we didn't speak for 10 years. Now, it's good — we are in a good place, and our brotherhood is really good, and we're just having fun with this music... There's an energy and a real anger and real passion in those songs that translates into people losing their minds when they hear it. I don't even have to tell them, 'Circle pit' — they will do it themselves. It's just the power of music."

In 1996, Max exited SEPULTURA after the rest of the band split with Max 's wife Gloria as their manager.

Igor left SEPULTURA in June 2006 due to "artistic differences." His departure from the band came five months after he announced that he was taking a break from SEPULTURA 's touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their son (who was born in January 2006).

The current SEPULTURA lineup — featuring guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. alongside Derrick Green on vocals and Eloy Casagrande on drums — released its latest studio album, "Quadra" , in February 2020 via Nuclear Blast .

Cavalera Conspiracy (formed in 2007) is an American heavy metal band that regularly adopts the sounds and intensity of groove and thrash metal, hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.

Originally formed under the moniker Inflikted in 2006, Cavalera Conspiracy’s Brazilian brothers max Cavalera and Igor Cavalera were previously in the hard-hitting heavy metal group Sepultura. Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo and Gojira vocalist Joe Duplantier were later added to the lineup, assisting in the thrash metal narrative of the band. Cavalera Conspiracy’s debut album “Inflikted” was issued by Roadrunner Records in March 2008. Recorded in Los Angeles, California, with co-producer Logan Mader, the album enjoyed significant chart success in Austria, Finland and Germany. In support of the record, the band embarked on the Infliktour, making their debut performance at the Electric Weekend Festival in Madrid, Spain, followed by an extensive European tour, and subsequent U.S. tour. This marked the arrival of Johny Chow of Fireball Ministry to replace bassist Duplantier who was busy fulfilling responsibleties with his band Gojira.

Working with producer Logan Mader once again, Cavalera Conspiracy issued their sophomore album “Blunt Force Trauma” in March 2011. Earning positive reviews for their groove metal mentality, the record charted in over 10 countries and features Roger Miret of Agnostic Frost on the track “Lynch Mob”. Following the release John Chow relinquished his roll as bassist, and was replaced by the live bassist Tony Compos in late 2012. Released on Napalm Records, the band’s third full-length “Pandemonium” arrived in October 2014. Led by the single “Banzai Kamikaze”, the record represents their fastest and most intense to date.

Live reviews

The formation of Cavalera Conspiracy showed the fortunate reunion of the Brazilian brothers, Igor and Max Cavalera, who were formerly in the heavy metal band Sepultura and became estranged from one another after Max left Sepultura. The Cavalera brothers took the thrash metal sound that they perfected in Sepultura and took it to full force with Cavalera Conspiracy.

Cavalera Conspiracy has a kind of strength behind them that is similar to Slayer and Metallica, except they perform their music more closely to the Groove Metal genre. This means that instead of playing lighting fast tempos they slow the tempo down a bit, but still deliver their music with the intensity you would expect to hear from thrash metal. The members of Cavalera Conspiracy have great chemistry with one another as would be expected from a band with brothers in it. Max plays his guitar with a strong, rhythmic quality that syncs right into the tempo of Igor’s thunderous drumming delivery. Igor can be found behind a massive drum kit on stage, pounding away on his double bass drums and hitting the floor tom with all his strength to get a low, resonating sound that has the power to knock you off your feet. Lead guitarist, Marc Rizzo, is quick to shred complex scales and solos on his guitar that incorporate highly difficult techniques such as sweeping. Max’s voice is incredibly barbaric and intense, and is likely to leave chills down your spine when ever he yells into the microphone.

Although the band is mostly a metal band, they incorporate different influences into their music that makes them a unique metal band. Max’s appreciation for reggae and Igor’s love of the DJ culture add a unique flavor to the band’s sonic soundscape. Cavalera Conspiracy is quite the intriguing band to see live. Max wears long dreadlocks that he shakes around stage while rocking out to his music. Fans are overly excited to see Cavalera Conspiracy perform live and start up mosh pits that look as brutal as Cavalera Conspiracy’s music sounds.

Cavalera Conspiracy’s performances reminiscent back to the days when Sepultura was at the top of their game. The reunion of the Cavalera brothers shows the two brothers at a more mature time of their life that allows them to coherently see what they want to do musically and present their music without any reservations or set backs.

There is brotherly love at the heart of this thrash metal operation entitled Cavalera Conspirary. Although the Arizona outfit was only formed in 2007, the strength of their albums and the skill of the live show has see the band perform at some of the world's most iconic metal and rock events.

The brothers have remained a consistency within the group's lineup along with guitarist Marc Rizzo and therefore have a brilliant rapport onstage. It also helps the overall live operation as they know the music so well you expect they could perform it blindfolded.'The Doom of All Fires' is perhaps the best example of the band's instrumental prowess with each member throwing themselves into the performance which lasts a good ten minutes at least. The crowd is now pumped and ready for the band to bring it home with a selection of older tracks such as 'Thrasher' 'Torture' and the finale of 'Roots Bloody Roots' which perhaps receives the largest applause so far and it is incredibly well deserved.

Awesome show! Lots of energy, Max and Igor was on cue! I was disappointed with the crowd! A lot of them left after Death Angel played! C.O.C. Blind played a great set and walked around after their set and partied with the crowd!

Brazilian-born brothers Max and Igor Cavalera together co-founded the thrash metal band Sepultura in 1984 in Belo Horizonte. Max Cavalera was their lead singer and rhythm guitarist until 1996 when he departed the band. Igor Cavalera played drums for the band until 2006 when he left the band. He was the sole remaining original member.

Sepultura helped usher in the second wave of thrash metal from the late 1980s to the mid-90s with their first handful of albums. Together, they created two of Sepultura’s best-known and to this day, most popular albums – Beneath The Remains (1989) and Arise (1991). These two albums were highly influential to thrash metal of the day and are now widely considered to be classic albums.

Max and Igor began celebrating Beneath The Remains and Arise in 2018 when they embarked on a European tour. It took four more years to bring the tour to the U.S. with the Return Beneath Arise 2022 Tour. The U.S. shows, many of which have sold out, have created massive anticipation from the fans to see these two albums celebrated when many fans weren’t even alive when they were released.

Young Joliet, Illinois thrash metal band Backlash was formed in 2014. This four-piece group has recently released their debut album, Colossus just last year in 2021. I must admit that I had never heard of Backlash before I saw them perform on this night. In fact, I didn’t even know I was going to be seeing them at all. They weren’t on the roster for the show as of 24 hours before the show. This happens quite often and usually, it ends up being a disaster when a band is added last minute. I’ve been reviewing and shooting shows and bands from around the Chicagoland area for over a decade now and have never run across Backlash until now. I’m glad I did because this young band impressed the Hell out of me.

They seemed like a well-polished heavy band. Their music sounded incredible. They were very heavy, exactly the kind of metal I’m a fan of. I’m a big thrash fan and their sound caught my ear. In fact, I went home after the show and listened to their CD on Spotify and you should too. Backlash is a band that I will be keeping an eye on and I feel they will be going somewhere. Check them out.

HEALING MAGIC

HM is a two-piece, stoner/doom metal band from the wilds of the New River, Arizona desert. There are a couple of interesting facts about this band. First, they perform live as a two-piece band. There is only a guitar and drums, but no bass. I found this to be very curious. I thought they would sound terrible without the bass sound for their low-end, but I was mistaken. They actually sounded pretty good.

Secondly, the frontman and vocalist, Igor A. Cavalera is the son of Max Cavalera ( Sepultura, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy fame). I also found this to be very interesting because the musical ability didn’t fall very far from the tree. In the studio, Igor A. handles all the guitar, bass, and vocal duties while Johnny Valles handles all the drums.

For a two-person band, they were pretty heavy. I loved their funky, doom-laden riffs with shrieking vocals. As I said, the musicianship definitely runs in the family.

I’ve seen Warbringer live several times now and I just can’t say enough about this band. I feel they are one of the best and one of my favorites of the new generation of thrash metal bands out today. They seriously kill it every single time and every single show. Their aggression and brutality as a band is second to none. I’ve seen them as openers and as the headlining band themselves, which is where they belong IMO. But opening for a band such as Cavalera Bros. gives them much-needed exposure to crowds that might not have had the chance to see how good they really are.

Led by frontman John Kevill, who also IMO is probably the best thrash vocalist in the game right now. He is the only original member left in the band. Kevill is also one of the band’s chief lyricists. His stage presence is undeniable and can work a crowd like no one I’ve ever seen. He can turn a low-key audience into a crazy, moshing crowd in no time. As good as their music is I really believe it would not be the same band without John Kevill.

Now, Warbringer’s music is absolutely nothing to scoff at. They are one of the top few heaviest thrash bands performing today. Warbringer as a band is everything I love about the thrash genre at this time. Their music is precise and each member’s musicality is as good as it gets. It may sound as if I’m gushing about this band but I think it’s truly deserved. With Adam Carroll on rhythm guitar, Chase Becker on lead guitar, Chase Bryant on bass, and Carlos Cruz on the drums, they each operate on the highest level like a well-oiled machine.

MAX AND IGOR CAVALERA

After the previous acts, especially Warbringer, the crowd was fit to be tied while waiting for Cavalera to take the stage. On this night, The Forge’s security personnel were earning their money whilst dealing with all the crowd surfers during the show.

Upon seeing Max and his brother take the stage, literally, all Hell broke loose in the audience. As they led into the title track for “Beneath The Remains” the crowd was unstoppable. It was such a treat to hear these classic songs being played one after the other from this classic album. “Inner Self”, “Stronger Than Hate”, and “Mass Hypnosis” are just some of the highlights from an album that’s nearly perfect top to bottom. Of the two classic albums performed on this night, Beneath The Remains is my favorite of the two.

Following “Primitive Future”, the final song from Beneath The Remains , they went right into the title track “Arise” and we’re now into songs from that album. Standouts included “Dead Embryonic Cells”, “Murder”, and the Motorhead cover “Orgasmatron”.

Seeing the two founding original members of Sepultura play most of the tracks from that band’s two greatest albums was something I’ll never forget and will probably not be able to see again. Magic happened on this incredible night to a near-capacity crowd and I was there to see it. I can die happy now.

  • Beneath the Remains (Sepultura song)
  • Inner Self (Sepultura song)
  • Stronger Than Hate (Sepultura song)

  • Altered State (Sepultura song) (with “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath & “Territory” by Sepultura jam)
  • Infected Voice (Sepultura song)
  • Orgasmatron (Motörhead cover)
  • Troops of Doom (Sepultura song) (with “Raining Blood” by Slayer intro)
  • Beneath the Remains / Arise reprise (Sepultura song)
