A Guide to the Best Central Park Photo Spots

Central park photo spots: a complete photographers guide.

Is there any place more iconic than Central Park? With all the movies filmed here, the passing seasons, and just being a park oasis for so many New Yorkers, there is truly no place like it. Photographing the park is one of my favorite past times and I’m here to share all the best Central Park Photo Spots so you too can see the beauty in this place.

Things to Know Before Visiting Central Park

• Central Park is HUGE! It occupies 840 acres. If you want to see the entirety of the park plan for a few hours
• Wear comfortable walking shoes
• Rent a bike if you want to cover more ground in a shorter amount of time
• Every day, from 6 am -9 am is off-leash hours for dogs
• Pack a picnic for the park, it has some of the greatest places to post up for a picnic afternoon

Best Things to Do in Central Park

Bethesda fountain.

Hands down my favorite part of Central Park is the Bethesda fountain. Towering tall at 26 feet high this beauty is one of the tallest fountains in New York. The bronzed sculpture sitting atop is called “Angel of the Waters”. It was placed to commemorate the opening of the Croton Aqueduct, which supplied New York City with fresh water. Finally, the fountain is perfect to post up and people watch or watch the boats float by on the lake.

Bethesda Terrace

Bethesda Terrace is a two-level plaza overlooking the lake with the most beautiful architecture. Two gorgeous staircases take you down to the terrace which houses the Bethesda Fountain. Don’t miss the interior of the terrace! It’s ornamented with stunning tilework (16,000 tiles on the ceiling alone). And almost always has a live musician playing music adding to the ambiance. Above all, it’s a magical place in NYC that needs to be experienced by everyone, bar none.

A tree-lined promenade that has been the setting for many magnificent movies. “When Harry Met Sally”, “Maid in Manhattan”, “Serendipity”, the list goes on and on. The Mall runs from the 66th street entrance to Bethesda Terrace. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll, to people watch from one of the many dedicated benches, or to admire the beautiful fall foliage. Finally, it’s truly otherworldy during the fall.

The Bow Bridge

Bow Bridge is an ornate bridge overlooking the fifth avenue skyline. Completed in 1862 and made of cast iron, it’s perfect for the iconic Central Park shot. Furthermore, because of its popularity, it’s best to photograph early in the morning with fewer people around.

Location: The Ramble

The Lake Viewing Area

A stunning 20-acre picturesque lake in the middle of the city. This my friends is why New York City is so magical. The lake viewing area is vast but my favorite location has to be the San Remos Tower view. It’s located north of the Bow Bridge and what makes it so beautiful is the juxtaposition of nature and the city.

Loeb Boathouse

The Loeb boathouse is a hidden gem in the park. It was designed to coexist with the beautiful natural surroundings of the park. You can enjoy a romantic meal at their restaurant overlooking the lake. They even serve brunch on the weekends (best to make a reservation ). Finally, a Central Park bucket list item is to rent one of the rowboats. They are available in the spring, summer, and fall and cost $20 per hour (with a $20 deposit cash only). It’s such a unique thing to do when visiting Central Park.

Location: Loeb Boathouse, 5 minutes from Bethesda Terrace

Gapstow Bridge

Another beautiful spot in the park is the Gapstow Bridge which overlooks Wollman Rink. This stone bridge blends in with its natural surroundings but has a stunning city view to the south. Talk about a juxtaposition! The designers of Central Park were very smart with their plans in using bridges and walkways for one transportation or another. So most of the bridges are pedestrian friendly.

This iconic ice skating rink opened in 1949 and has been in New Yorkers’ holiday hearts since then. Ice skating in fall and winter is one of the best things to do in Central Park. If you recall, the end scene of Serendipity was filmed here. Finally, in past years they have had disco parties, viewing parties, and even music festivals held during the summer. So it’s popular spot year-round.

Location: W. 59th Street and 6th Avenue

Another hidden gem in the park, perfect for Central Park photography, is the Oak Bridge. This spot is particularly beautiful in the fall. Designed as one of the major entrances of The Ramble. The original bridge was made entirely of white oak, hence the name. However, it was not sustainable so the bridge you see today is made of more durable materials. Finally, a great perspective to shoot this bridge is from a bit further south so you can get the entire bridge in a frame surrounded by foliage.

Location: West side at 77th

Belvedere Castle

Did you know that there is a castle in Central Park? Well, there is and it’s the Belvedere Castle. Belvedere means beautiful view in Italian and that’s how it received its name. Set overlooking Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn, it’s completely free to enter and is open from Wednesday to Sunday 10 am – 5 pm.

Located: Mid Park 79th Street

The Rock Lookout

There are tons of rocks in the park you can climb on with city views. This one is located near Gapstow bridge and it looks like you’re the only person in the park. Finally, it’s one of the most instagrammable places for park photography.

1. The Gapstow Bridge

This gorgeous rustic stone bridge located in the southeast corner of the park is one of the best spots in Central Park for photos, often finding its way into wedding photoshoots, portraits, and even scenes in films and TV shows.

Tips For Taking Great Pictures Of Central Park In New York

To captire great pics of Central Park, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Morning is the best time to take pictures in Central Park. Central Park is one of the most popular attractions in NYC, meaning it can get crowded. The earlier you arrive to these top Central Park picture spots, the easier it will be to get the shot you want without having to battle swarms of people. Bonus: from 7am-9am it’s off leash hours, meaning you can get some adorable pups in your shots.

Look for the leading lines. When taking photos of Central Park, one composition trick is to look for leading lines — like fences and walking paths — and use those to lead the viewer’s eyes to your subject. This can help you create really interesting images in Central Park’s best photo spots.

Watch out for distractions. One thing to keep in mind while exploring the best places to take pictures in Central Park is to avoid things like garbage cans and litter, which can take away from the beauty of your shot. If you’re photographing a person, also avoid having lightpoles and other objects coming out of their head.

The Best Central Park Photo Spots that Every Photographer will Love

Did you know that Central Park is 840 acres ?! It’s a huge piece of land with plenty of amazing scenes right in the middle of one of New York City . These Central Park photo spots are some of the prettiest places to take pictures in NYC and they won’t disappoint!

It’s amazing any time of year, with lush greens in Summer or a white wonderland in winter, but I especially love Central Park with spring blooms or autumnal foliage. Photographer’s of all levels come to Central Park to practice their passion because of the ample and diverse FREE locations. It’s no wonder photoshoots are constantly going on at this famous New York City park.

Staying near Central Park

Some of the most classic New York hotels are near Central Park, but they are also some of the most expensive. If you don’t have a budget to stick to why not stay at the Plaza or the Pierre?! It will probably feel like a movie scene walking from the Plaza to these Central Park photo spots in a matter of minutes! You may even have a view of the park from your room.

Central Park Photo Spots Map

Central Park is located between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side in Manhattan. The Park is 1/2 mile wide and 2.5 miles long though there are very few direct routes across it. Here is an interactive map showing you the best photo spots in Central Park to help you plan your route. Most of the best Central Park photos spots are in the bottom half of the park. There are multiple entrances to Central Park but I typically enter at East 72nd St. or Center Drive at 6th Ave.

Subway Stations near Central Park include West 92nd St. (B, C),  East 92nd St.(Q, M, R),  West 86th St.(1,2),  East 86th St. (4,5,6, Q) West 81st St. (B, C), West 72nd St. (B,C)East 77th St. (4,5,6), 59th St. Colombus Circle(1,2,3),  57th St./7th Ave (N,Q,R,W), 57th St. (F), 5th Ave/59th St. (N,W,R).

Mid to Upper Central Park Photo Spots

Most of the Central Park photo spots are actually relatively bunched together. Not much is in upper Central Park, most are in mid and lower Central Park and the

1. Bow Bridge 

There’s something so romantic about the Bow Bridge. It’s a beautiful cast iron pedestrian bridge across the lake in Central Park. Being one of the more popular locations, you will not get a picture on Bow Bridge alone unless you wake up early like I did. This was taken at about 8am during the week in early spring.  That being said, I still had to wait a little until all the dog walkers were out of sight to get my solo Instagram shot!

2. Bethsheda Terrace and Fountain

Bethsheda Terrace and Fountain is probably the next most popular area for photos. The terrace and fountain are frequently featured in films and shows like Elf, Enchanted, Law & Order and Gossip Girl. The golden tones and artistic tiles underneath Bethsheda Terrace are incredible. I love how the fountain looks when it’s filled with water and luscious lilly pads.

Photographers adore it here, especially for engagement and wedding shoots! It’s one of the prettiest places to take pictures in NYC.Stake your claim by being the first one to arrive in the morning or wait patiently for others to finish.

3. Row boats from Loeb’s Boathouse

Who wouldn’t want to do something as classic as rowing in the Central Park lake?! The row boats are seasonal and are only open from 10am until sundown. I got there for about 11:30 and didn’t have to wait too long. The row boats are $15 for 1 hour plus a $20 deposit. CASH ONLY

Location: Between the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side. To get to the spot in the top photo on the right.  enter Central Park at 59th Street.  This flat rock is behind the Wollman skating rink.

4. Belvedere Castle

Even though it opened in 1872, Belvedere Castle is some what of a hidden gem in Central Park!  Belvedere translates to “beautiful view” in Italian; intended to be a viewing platform. You can walk around inside the “castle” for a view from the observation deck. There’s a big lawn named the “Great Lawn” which people picnic at behind where I’m sitting.  It’s quite a peaceful spot!

South Central Park Photo Spots

5. wollman rink (seasonal).

Nothing puts you in the holiday spirit like ice skating! I love going to Wollman’s Rink because the ice has a backdrop of sky scrapers is just so cool! The rink is only open in the winter and does have an entry fee as well as skate rental fee. Keep in mind it’s CASH ONLY , but there is an ATM on site.

6. On the Rocks

There are plenty of rocks you can climb on for some seemingly “solo” photos. These ones are near Gapstow Bridge. If you walk around the bottom of Central Park you’ll probably just walk by some you can climb up on. They are super instagrammble with the tall buildings as your backdrop.

Closest Entrance: Center Drive at 59th St. or Corner of 59th and 5th Ave.

7. Gapstow Bridge

Gapstow Bridge is another nice bridge overlooking the Pond. In my opinion, the actually bridge isn’t as nice as the Bow Bridge but the backdrop of the city is very cool!

Closest Entrance: W 79th St.

8.The Pond – Central Park Conservatory

I love walking around the pond early in the morning with hardly anyone around. It’s amazing there is a place so peaceful just meters away from Midtown. Birds, turtles and other wildlife can sometimes be spotted here. The reflection in the pond is one of my favorite aspects.

I actually like photographing Gapstow bridge from the opposite side of the pond.

Best time to take Pictures of Central Park Photo Spots

As I mentioned earlier, Central Park is pretty at any time of the year. Being that New York City experiences all 4 seasons, you could go to 4 or 5 times in a year and it will look quite different. That’s the beauty of it. For me, avoiding crowds is imperative so I tend to go early in the morning (before 8am) and during the week. Occasionally, a sunset picnic or a day soaking in Vitamin D does manage to entice me.

The lighting is best for photos in the morning and late afternoon or dusk.

Events in Central Park

Central Park hosts multiple events throughout the year.  There are sporting events, theatre, music and more. Summerstage is a crowd favorite, being it host concerts for FREE! Enter at 69th Street and 5th Avenue.

Are you looking for the best Central Park photo spots?

Central Park is one of the most iconic parks in the world, and definitely one of the muse-see attractions in New York City.

If you’re heading there soon, you might be looking for information on the Central Park photo spots to ensure you stop by the most picturesque parts of this beautiful park!

Make no mistake – Central Park is huge! So going in with a map of where to find the best photo spots in Central Park is definitely a good plan of action!

I’ve actually made my own map below with my favourite Central Park photo spots, so you can easily follow my map and find the best places to take photos in Central Park.

You don’t necessarily need to visit all the Central Park photo spots I’ve listed below, but these will definitely give you a good idea of where to find the best photo spots in Central Park – so you can take some amazing photos during your visit!

Just find the number on the map, and the coordinating number on the list below – and you’ll see I’ve also included a photo taken from each photo spot below too – so you can see exactly what’s there and what to expect!

Central Park Photography Spot #1 – The Pond

First up on my list of Central Park photo spots, The Pond.

The little pathway that leads you in Central Park from the 5th Avenue entrance, will naturally take you right by The Pond.

If you walk up to Gapstow Bridge, there is a great pathway that runs alongside The Pond, and gives you some great views of the water and Gapstow Bridge.

You can see the pathway on the photo below, the path is quite long so there’s plenty of space to take shots and loads of photo opportunities.

You can also great great shots of Gapstow Bridge from along there too.

The photo below of The Pond, was actually taken from Gapstow Bridge (which is the next photo spot).

So for photos of The Pond, stand on Gapstow Bridge, and for photos of the Gapstow Bridge, walk along The Pond pathway. I hope that’s not too confusing!

Central Park Photography Spot #2 – Gapstow Bridge

Gapstow Bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in Central Park (probably second to Bow Bridge… which is further down this list of photo spots in Central Park!).

You’ll probably recognise Gapstow Bridge from  lots of films and movies  too! Gapstow Bridge is a gorgeous place to take photos – from the bridge you can get wonderful photos of the NYC skyline across the greenery of the trees.

The bridge itself is also extremely photogenic of course! Definitely one of the most popular Central Park photo spots – don’t miss it!

Central Park Photography Spot #3 – Viewing path near Wollman Rink

This photo spot doesn’t have an ‘official name’ (trust me… I looked!) – but you’ll find it a short walk from Gapstow Bridge, if you follow the pathway up and to the left.

It’s on the way to Wollman Rink  and this gorgeous photo spot actually over looks the Wollman Rink area.

It’s one of the most stunning and panoramic views of the city skyline, and it’s a pretty lovely place to just relax with a coffee and a book.

Central Park Photography Spot #4 – Random park areas!

Next up on my list of Central Park photo spots, just random areas! There are some lovely random views in the middle of the park (half the fun is just following the pathways and seeing where they take you).

One of the nicest ways to explore the park is by horse and carriage or by a bike – and you’ll discover so many lovely little photo spots in Central Park just by exploring this way.

I really recommend booking a horse and carriage ride using Get Your Guide – as you pay a fixed price and you can pay in advance.

Sometimes the Central Park horse and carriage rides can be a bit unreliable with their fees and charges, so paying in advance means you don’t have to worry (and you’ll only need to tip at the end).

Central Park Photography Spot #5 – Lounging Rock and Playmates Arch

Lounging Rock is one of the biggest rocks in Central Park and it’s a great place to snap a photo of the skyline!

You can climb up the rock pretty easily (getting down is often the hardest bit) and if you find a comfortable spot up there it’s a nice place to sit and watch the world go by too.

You’ll find great photo opportunities from up there, with the skyline glistening in the background and the trees and park in the foreground.

Central Park Photography Spot #6 – Columbus Circle pathways

Next on my list of Central Park photo spots, it’s the areas leading from Columbus Circle.

If you enter the park from Columbus Circle, there are a few pathways that will lead you into the heart of the park from there.

These offer some gorgeous views as you walk towards the middle of the park, and you get to see a slightly different angle of the skyline than the 5th ave entrance.

Central Park Photography Spot #7 – The Aviary Bar

The Aviary Bar isn’t actually inside Central Park, but it has to be classed as one of the best Central Park photo spots.

The view from this bar (located inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel) is INCREDIBLE!

You have to visit in daylight to enjoy the views of the park, as there’s not much to see if you visit once the sun goes down, but the views truly are amazing.

The price of enjoying this Central Park photo spot is the cost of a drink inside the bar (so between $10 – $20). Not bad for access to a great view, and also a nice drink in a fancy bar!

Central Park Photography Spot #8 – The Lake

This is one of my favourite photo spots in NYC hands down! The Lake is one of the most beautiful spots in the park, and for me, it’s just everything about Central Park in one photo.

You have the gorgeous trees and greenery, the beautiful lake, people boating, a stunning bridge and even skyscrapers in the distance.

I love walking alongside the lake and snapping photos – and I make sure we visit this Central Park photo spot every time I’m in Central Park.

Top tip! A good way to tick off loads of the Central Park photo spots on this list, is actually by booking a Central Park walking tour. Central Park Photography Spot #9 – Bow Bridge

Bow Bridge is one of the most romantic photo spots in NYC. Everyday you’ll see people popping the question here, and seeing people down on one knee with an engagement ring is something you’ll definitely see!

It’s a beautiful photo spot in NYC and it’s a classic (and iconic) place in the city too.

Central Park Photography Spot #10 – Bethesda terrace

Bethesda Terrace is a wonderful place in Central Park, and it’s so ornate, detailed and beautiful.

Bethesda Terrace is basically an underpass that runs through the centre of the park, but it’s an underpass with a difference.

It’s tiled to perfection, it’s colourful, it’s beautiful. Look at those archways, the symmetrical tiles… how can you not fall in love!? This is definitely one of the best Central Park photo spots.

Central Park Photography Spot #11 – Conservatory Water

Next on my list of Central Park photo spots, it’s Conservatory Water. Conservatory Water is one of the less busy bodies of water in Central Park, and it’s actually more popular with locals than tourists.

I love the symmetry here, and I love capturing photos of the reflections from the skyscrapers in the water. It’s just gorgeous and such a peaceful place in the city too.

Central Park Photography Spot #12 – Oak Bridge

Oak bridge is a little wooden bridge hidden away at the far end of The Lake.

It’s one of my favourite Central Park photo spots to walk up to on a nice day, as you get to walk past lots of the other photo spots on the way!

You’ll get a gorgeous view of the skyline peeping out between the trees, and it’s just a wonderfully framed photo opportunity.

Bear in mind, to get this shot, you’ll need to visit on a clear day!

Central Park Photography Spot #13 – Belvedere Castle

Next on my list of Central Park photo spots, did you know there’s a castle in Central Park? It’s surprising, but it’s there!

Belvedere Castle is nestled about halfway down Central Park and it’s definitely one of the most surprising and beautiful photo spots in Central Park!

You can stand in the castle ground and get some great shots of the skyline surrounding it, but you can also stand across the way from the castle and get a lovely photo like the one below, looking towards the castle.

Central Park Photography Spot #14 – Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir

Last on my list of Central Park photo spots, it’s the Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir.

This amazing Central Park photo spot is situated further down Central Park than most tourists get to, but it’s definitely worth the walk.

It’s one of the biggest bodies of water in the park, so you get these lovely expansive views over the water – perfect for taking photos.

Top tip for photography lovers….

The Best Central Park Photo Spots To Take Pictures

Central Park , one of the world’s most renowned parks, stands as a remarkable urban oasis in the heart of Manhattan. As the first public park in the United States, it has nearly 50 fountains, monuments, sculptures, and 36 bridges, making it a prime destination for Central Park photo spots. Its abundant recreational facilities cater to the active, with opportunities for skating, cycling, rowing, basketball, and climbing.

To get around Central Park it’s important to know how to navigate it. Besides walking, traveling via the subway is the easiest since car congestion is absolutely horrible, and finding parking can be tough. These are all the MTA lines and their stops nearby.

• 59th St. Columbus Circle (1,2,3)
• West 72nd St. (B,C)
• W 81st St. (B, C)
• W 86th St. (1,2)

• E 77th St. (4,5,6)

I first became familiar with Central Park from the different runner’s loop where the flow goes from east to west so this blog article will follow the same direction.

Gapstow Bridge

Near the N/W/R train’s 59th St. and 5th Ave. stop, you can easily see the iconic Gapstow Bridge in the southeast corner of Central Park. Looking towards the bridge itself is nothing special, but the view from the bridge offers a breathtaking scene of Billionaire’s Row. This is one of the best locations for “bridging” (see what I did there) an escape from the concrete jungle.

Further up past the Gapstow Bridge these two locations give you a sweeping view of all the massive high-rise skyscrapers on Central Park South, also known as Billionaires Row . It doesn’t get too busy, and it’s a great spot to watch the sunset (pictured).

• Wollman Rink Lookout

The Center of Central Park

The mall & literary walk.

An iconic movie location (I always think of Maid in Manhattan), The Mall in Central Park is the perfect photo spot to utilize the compression technique with a tree tunnel. I always have to take one when I come across a tree tunnel. The best time to take pictures here is in the autumn during fall foliage, but during a winter snowstorm comes in a close second. Bethesda Terrace Arcade & Fountain

The place where Blair and Chuck from Gossip Girl got married, the Bethesda Terrace Arcade and Fountain is one of the most popular Central Park photo spots. I always see photographers and their clients taking pictures here, and this is the number one location I recommend to clients too because of the beautiful Minton tiles and arches framing them.

I enjoy coming here at night in the summer once the crowds have dispersed because there’s usually a soloist performing just for themselves. The acoustics inside the terrace are legendary! If you head towards the back of the Bethesda Fountain where the Lake is, you can easily include the stairs and parts of the skyline in your pictures.

Due to the fact it’s such a popular location though, expect crowds at all hours unless you go first thing in the morning.

Shuman Running Track at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

One of my absolute favorite spots in all of New York City is the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. There’s a section in the back of the reservoir where you can capture the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and Central Park South all in one photo. It’s my favorite spot to bring friends to, especially at sunset, because of how breathtaking the view is as the sun is going behind the horizon.

Unpopular opinion, but I find the Bow Bridge quite lame. It’s on everyone and their mother’s list though as one of the most romantic photo spots in Central Park so I feel obliged to include it. It’s specifically popular for wedding photography because of the light color and the interlocking circle banisters. If bright and airy is your style then be sure to get a shot here!

Belvedere Castle

Did you know there’s an actual castle in New York City sitting in the middle of Central Park? Belvedere Castle is a cool spot to take pictures from, but you can also head over to the Great Lawn in order to have it in your background.

Sheep Meadow

As an NYC cityscape photographer, I’m all about the skyline with color in the sky. Sheep Meadow gives you all that and more. It stretches from the east to the west side and is also a great spot to enjoy a picnic.

Besides the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, Oak Bridge is my next favorite photo location in Central Park. It’s especially gorgeous at sunset where the skyline looks like it’s glowing. Highly recommend taking pictures here at least once during every season.

Wagner Cove

If you’re looking for a little bit of rustic charm, Wagner Cove is your best bet. It’s tucked away down some stairs near Cherry Hill and is a fan favorite for intimate wedding ceremonies. One of my very first bridal photoshoots was taken at Wagner Cove!

Ladies Pavilion & Hernshead

One of the magical things about Central Park are all the pavilions and pagodas throughout. Ladies Pavilion, and the rocks next to it, have the best backdrop of the full Manhattan skyline behind it. It’s another popular spot for romantic gestures like wedding photography and surprise proposals. Funny story, I once stumbled upon the wedding of someone I went to high school with here and pretended I didn’t see their whole ceremony lol.

Tavern on the Green

The hanging lights at Tavern on the Green’s outdoor patio are hands down bokeh heaven. They can be seen from Sheep Meadow, and I did my very first client photoshoot here back in 2019! Their C hristmas decorations are also stunning and the entrance walkway is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I had to photograph a proposal in the patio and highly recommend it if you’re looking for a spot. It’s a total vibe.

The Lake Viewing Area

Facing Central Park West, the Lake has amazing views of iconic buildings like San Remo and El Dorado.

• Conservatory Garden

If you’re a true New Yorker, you know the Conservatory Garden is nicknamed “the Secret Garden” because most transplants and tourists never go this far up. Even then, most people stay in the south part of the park, never passing the line where Bethesda Fountain and Bethesda Terrace are. NEWS FLASH: Central Park is massive and beautiful throughout! I have to admit, it took me years before I started traveling North of Museum Mile. Central Park extends all the way up to 110th St. and some of the best Central Park photo spots sit up here.

Season Specific

Central park photo spots in spring.

Every April when the weather starts to warm up, Central Park is one of the best locations in NYC to see and photograph cherry blossoms . I didn’t realize how many locations I had pictured in my archives, but these are some of the best spots.

• The Obelisk (Cleopatra’s Needle)

Fall Foliage

Like spring, fall is also one of the best times to walk around Central Park and see the colorful trees turn color.

Central Park is a New York City icon. This world-famous green space welcomes over 40 million visitors each year.

If you are interested in photography, head to Central Park, widely regarded as one of the most photogenic spots in NYC, especially for nature lovers.

This post includes the best Central Park photo spots organized into a self-guided walking tour to include on your New York City itinerary .

1. Gapstow Bridge

Gapstow Bridge is one of the most photographed bridges of the many famous bridges in the world. 

The natural beauty of the bridge itself surrounded by foliage that is spectacular year-round makes it one of the best Central Park photo shoot locations.

2. Wollman Rink

Located in the southeast corner of the park, this ice skating rink is an iconic sight in Central Park.

It is so picturesque that the rink appears in various movies including the romantic comedy Serendipity.

The backdrop of the rink is the city skyline of Millionaire’s Row, making photographs of Wollman Rink spectacular, especially at night.

3. The Mall

The Mall and Literary Walk is a perfectly straight tunnel-like walkway flanked by benches, statues, and thick-set American Elm trees.

This 40-foot wide and quarter-mile-long grand promenade is the equivalent of six city blocks, though it certainly makes for a prettier stroll!

The Mall has appeared in many movies, including Kramer vs. Kramer , Big Daddy, and Maid in Manhattan . 

4. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain 

Descend the stone staircases at the end of The Mall and walk underneath a triple-arched entranceway into the stunning Bethesda Terrace Arcade.

An orange glow illuminates the arcade lined with majestic columns and a spectacular tile ceiling comprising 15,876 individual encaustic tiles.

These tiles originate from the mid-1860s and the Arcade is the only known example of a Minton tile suspended ceiling, making this a very rare and very photogenic locale.

When you exit the arcade onto Bethesda Terrace, pause inside the central arch to photograph Bethesda Fountain.

It's a lovely spot for a photo shoot, which is why you will find lots of professional photographers. 

Dozens of films and TV shows have featured scenes on the terrace and near the fountain. Woody Allen has filmed scenes from several movies here, including Annie Hall. 

Other well-known movies shot here include the classic Christmas movies Home Alone 2 and Elf , John Wick and One Fine Day .

Television series like Sex and the City and Law and Order have episodes with scenes here.

5. Bow Bridge

Leave Bethesda Fountain from the northwest and walk for two minutes until you reach the elegant Bow Bridge.

You have two great spots to take pictures. On the south side, you can frame a view of the Lake and Bow Bridge against a backdrop of trees.

On the north side, you can use the upper Manhattan skyline as a background.

Expect to share this popular photography spot with dozens of others lining the banks of The Lake.

Bow Bridge appears in a whole host of movies and tv shows, including Spiderman 3 , Night at the Museum , Glee, and Doctor Who.  

It's also one of the best places in the entire city for engagement portraits and wedding photos.

6. Wagner Cove 

Stick to the south side of Bow Bridge and head west along The Lake until you reach Wagner Cove and its quaint wooden rustic shelter with two benches.

Wagner Cove is a desirable wedding spot for locals, but it is less known among tourists which makes it a Central Park hidden gem.

Better still, there’s a wonderful view overlooking Wagner Cove from the Daniel Webster statue farther along The Lake.

7. Strawberry Fields

Just a two-minute walk to the northwest from the Wagner Cove viewpoint is Strawberry Fields named after The Beatles’ song and in honor of John Lennon, who lived just outside the park in the Dakota Building .

Look for the John Lennon memorial, a black and white tiled mosaic with the word IMAGINE.

Here’s a tip on how to get the best photograph of the memorial plaque:

Mount your camera on a tripod with a lens you can adjust the focal length.

Set a long shutter speed of one to two seconds and slowly zoom out as the frame is exposed.

Now the word “Imagine” and its surrounding pattern appear as though you’re looking through a kaleidoscope. 

8. The Ramble

From the Imagine plaque, head north on the path that runs parallel to the Bridle Path where you might spot some horse-drawn carriages !

Walk about seven minutes until you reach Oak Bridge. Cross the bridge and enter one of the most beloved areas in Central Park called The Ramble .

This area is a labyrinth of narrow twisting paths and ornate stone arches, all of which are incredibly photogenic. There are even a few small manmade waterfalls!

Its woodsy environment makes the Ramble an excellent spot to look for wildlife to photograph.

You can also leave The Ramble and head northeast to The Metropolitan Museum of Art , one of the best museums in the world!

9. Belvedere Castle

Belvedere is Italian for “beautiful view” and the castle's name is very apt! Belvedere Castle is like something out of a fairy tale. 

The castle itself is a gorgeous subject for a photograph, but it also offers expansive views of the park.

Turtle Pond and the Great Lawn, the heart of Central Park, are to the north, the Ramble is to the south, and the city skyline surrounds it.

10. Conservatory Garden

This charming garden located just next to the Upper East Side opened in 1937. 

It is split into three sections with different styles: the English South Garden, the French North Garden, and the Italianate Center Garden.

There are three fountains on the grounds as well as a wide variety of flowers, including summer perennials, tulips, lilacs, chrysanthemums, and more. 

This delightful locale in Central Park is a popular spot for engagement parties and small weddings.

Best Time of Year for Taking Photos in Central Park

A perfect Central Park photo shoot can take place any time of year.

You’ll find Spring blooms and pretty pink cherry blossoms in April and May. In the warmer months, emerald green grass covers the Sheep Meadow.

There are radiant orange, yellow and red leaves in Autumn and white snow-capped trees in the winter months.

As for the time of day, early in the morning is best.

You'll have an easier time getting the shot you want without dealing with crowds of people trying to capture the same photograph as you.

1) Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain are two architectural features overlooking The Lake in New York City’s Central Park. You might recognise this area from Home Alone 2, Elf, Enchanted and Gossip Girl .

The terrace is filled with arches and has the most incredible ceiling, super instagrammable! Come around 7am to have it mostly to yourself. Although it has a ceiling, you can get quite nice light coming in from the fountain side.

2) Bow Bridge

Bow bridge is a beautiful cast iron bridge that goes over The Lake in Central Park. Decorated with an interlocking circles banister and eight planting urns, with iconic buildings in the distance, it’s a perfect spot for an instagram picture.

Best time to go is early morning if you want to capture the bridge without anyone on, or around sunset you can capture a beautiful backlit photo on the side of the bridge.

3) Picnic in Central Park

Not only is a picnic super fun but it makes for a great photo opportunity too. Go next to the Lake just in between the Bethesda Fountain and Loeb Boathouse for the perfect backdrop.

4) Rowing on Central Park Lake

Another fun activity to do in Central Park is to go rowing on The Lake. It’s only $20 for an hour (plus $20 deposit), make sure you bring cash.

5) On the rocks

Another iconic instagrammable location in Central Park is on some rocks with skyscrapers behind. There are a few different rock ‘hills’ around the park, these various schists were formed from sedimentary shale by intense subterranean heat and pressure some 450 million years ago in the Paleozoic Era.

Head to the south of the park for the best views.

6) The Mall

The Mall is the perfect place for for a photo as it is a beautiful tree lined avenue. You might recognise it from films such as Harry Met Sally, Maid In Manhattan and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I would come here early if you want a photo by yourself, and maybe try shooting with a zoom lens.

7) Perfect reflection in The Lake

Head into the rambles to find a perfect reflection in The Lake. The best time to take photos here is before sunrise or midday/ in the afternoon so the light is even. I’ve pinned the location on the map below so you can easily find it.

8) Belvedere Castle

Did you know that there is a castle in Central Park? Located right next to a lake it looks like it belongs in a fairytale!

Central park photography tours and routes.

For anyone looking for a guided (day or night) photography tour of Central Park, I offer highly rated tours that you can read more about here .

No trip to New York is complete without a trip to the most famous park in the world. Central Park was designed by landscape architect and writer Frederick Law Olmsted and by English architect Calvert Vaux, or as they are commonly called Olmsted and Vaux. Opened to the public in 1858, the park has functioned as both a respite from the daily grind for New Yorkers, and as a tourist destination for tens of millions from around the world.

Unless it is overcast, for the best light (and fewer people) the best times to visit the park are in the early morning and an hour before sunset and into dusk. It is great to visit the park during a light rain when the ground shimmers and the colors pop. If you visit on a weekend, there will be many more people out and about, particularly in the warmer months.

Central Park is wonderful in all seasons. In winter, the leaves fall off the trees and you can see through them to the lights of the buildings surrounding the park. If you are lucky to visit in the middle of a snowstorm, the park turns into a Disney-like fairytale. In spring, the trees sprout, the park smells amazing, and people flock from all over in celebration. In summer, the trees provide shade and the surrounding buildings disappear, making you feel like you are lost in the woods. Thousands of people sunbathe and play Frisbee in Sheep Meadow. And you know what happens in fall. The trees turn all types of gorgeous colors, and every inch of the park is photogenic.

“[Central Park] is the most important work of American art of the 19th century,” Sara Cedar Miller said. Everywhere you look, it feels like you are staring at a painting, and it is shocking to realize that you actually are. Central Park is a real life painting with every vista planned and created. The original map of what was called the Greensward Plan is located in the Central Park Arsenal, and it is 3-feet by 8-feet and made in pen and ink.

My suggested photography walk through the park will take you a couple hours, depending on your pace. You can go at any time, but I suggest starting an hour before sunset and bringing a tripod for when it gets darker. Bring a map of the park, and GPS on your phone will be very helpful. Enter at the entrance to the park on the corner of 67th Street and 5th Avenue. As you walk in, the Treehouse will appear on your right, which is built on a huge piece of Manhattan Schist, the hard bedrock that makes it much easier to construct tall skyscrapers. Walk onto the rocks to the side of the structure, and be careful of your step. You will have a grand view of the park and Central Park south. The tall skinny building in the middle is named One57, whose penthouse sold for over $100 million to an unnamed person or company.

Head down from the Treehouse the way you came, and walk west to the Mall, the southern end of which is called Literary Walk. Surrounded by rows of American Elm trees, which form a canopy, this is the most important horticultural feature in the park. It is also one of the last remaining stretches of American Elm trees in North America.

Otherwise, walk back the way you came to Bethesda Terrace and take the path on the opposite side that goes to the northwest. This will lead you to the cast-iron Bow Bridge , the most famous structure in the Park. Hop over the fence on the left to photograph it, then cross the bridge and take the path to your right to capture the bridge from the other side.

Central Park is New York's backyard. This lush 843-acre patch of nature in the middle of Manhattan is one of the city's biggest attractions and greatest assets, enjoyed by tourists and locals year-round. Countless scenes from movies and TV shows have been filmed here over the years.

The park is home to scenic hills; meadows; playgrounds; skating rinks; ball fields; and many well-known attractions, including Strawberry Fields, Belvedere Castle, and the Central Park Zoo. Be warned: the park is huge. The best way to explore it is to stop by the visitor center and pick up a map of Central Park showing the various attractions and things to do, and then plan out a walking route or take a tour.

Belvedere Castle is a stone castle atop Vista Rock, offering a spectacular view of the park and the city from its rooftop lookout. Looking north, you see the open green space of the Great Lawn and the Delacorte Theater , where free Shakespearean productions performed by some famous names are held every summer. To the south is the forest area known as the Ramble .

It should be noted that the "castle" is not really a castle at all, but a miniature castle built in 1869 specifically to serve as a lookout within the park. It eventually fell into disrepair and was renovated and opened in the 1980s. Inside is a visitor center and gift shop.

The weather for Central Park is measured from the top of the castle.

The Central Park Zoo features animals from the Asia, polar regions, and the California Coast. In the Temperate Territory, watch for red pandas, snow leopards, and snow monkeys. Head over to the Polar Circles to see the much-loved penguins. Other animal highlights include grizzly bears, California sea lions, and lemurs.

Also located at the zoo is a 4D Theater intended for visitors aged six and up. The theater charges a fee but is included with a full price ticket.

Near the entrance is the charming Delacorte Musical Clock , where bronze animals encircle the time piece and play children's songs or seasonal pieces every half hour.

Located within Central Park, Strawberry Fields is a memorial to John Lennon , who was tragically murdered in 1980 in front of the Dakota apartments just off the west side of the park. A mosaic is set in the pathway with the word "Imagine" inscribed, named after Lennon's 1971 song.

The landscape was designed by Vaux and Olmstead and features 161 species of plants (one from every country in the world), and the area was named a Peace Garden . This area of the park is also a designated quiet zone

It is one of the main attractions in the park, and people often come here to have their picture taken with the memorial.

Bethesda Fountain on Bethesda Terrace stands between the Lake and the Mall, and is one of the architectural highlights of Central Park. The fountain was dedicated in 1873 and the statue, Angel of the Waters , in 1842. The Spanish-style detailing of the double staircase with tiles and friezes was done by Jacob Mould. The terrace is a popular place for photos and a pleasant area to relax.

The Bethesda Fountain is located in front of the Bethesda Terrace. If you pass through the Bethesda Terrace, you will emerge on Central Park Mall.

Conservatory Garden is a peaceful oasis, filled with thousands of trees and shrubs. Known for being the only formal garden in the park, this six-acre area has a much calmer atmosphere than other portions of Central Park, with no cyclists or skateboarders. It is frequently the setting for weddings.

The main entrance is through the large, wrought iron Vanderbilt Gate off Fifth Avenue. Inside, the garden is divided into three sections of different styles: French, Italian, and English. The French garden features the bronze fountain, Three Dancing Maidens by Walter Schott.

The gardens are particularly impressive in spring, when the fruit trees come into bloom and the tulips provide a showy display of color.

In 2022, the Conservatory Garden is scheduled for a significant infrastructure upgrade. Be sure to check online to see what is and is not open.

On the far eastern shore of The Lake, the beautiful Loeb Boathouse is a restaurant with an indoor dining room and an outdoor seating area, set right on the water's edge. The picturesque setting here is often used for weddings and other formal events.

You can sit here on a warm afternoon sipping coffee or enjoying a meal while watching people row boats on the usually calm water. If you are looking for a little more activity, you can rent a boat yourself and go for a paddle around the lake.

A lovely area for walking, the Mall is a straight, wide pathway running beneath a canopy of huge trees in the south end of Central Park. This spot offers a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of New York City and a chance to enjoy a little nature.

Even in winter, when the park is covered in snow, this is a great place for a stroll. Joining the Mall is the Literary Walk, lined with statues of literary giants that include Shakespeare, Robert Burns, and Sir Walter Scott, as well as others.

The Central Park Carousel has enjoyed a long tradition in the park, with the first carousel open for business in 1871. Over the years, four different carousels have operated in this location. It's one of the most popular things to do as a family in Central Park. In fact, hundreds of park goers ride the carousel each day with a yearly total of close to 250,000 riders.

The current carousel was added in the early 1950s and restored in the 1990s and features 57 hand-carved horses. It is considered one of the largest of its kind in North America. It's open seven days a week.

Conservatory Water, on the east side of the park near 72nd Street, is better known as the Model Boat Pond . People come here from spring until fall, particularly on weekends, to sail and race their model boats .

Benches around the shore, shaded by large trees, are a perfect place to visit to relax and watch the action. At the north end of the water is a sculpture of Alice in Wonderland and on the east side is Kerbs Boathouse , with a café.

Skating in central park is a great family activity, but couples can also enjoy a romantic skate. This is a seasonal activity, open from late October to April , and if you are visiting New York in the winter, a skate in Central Park on a sunny day is a memorable event.

Two options exist for skating in the park: Located near the Central Park Zoo, the Wollman Rink offers outdoor skating for a fee in a beautiful setting, surrounded by trees. Skate rentals are available on-site, and spectators are welcome but they also have to pay a fee.

The Lasker Rink serves as a skating rink in winter and a swimming pool in summer. The fees are less than Wollman Rink. Both rinks only accept cash.

Every spring, the cherry trees in Central Park burst into a blaze of pink and white, heralding the onset of warmer days ahead. Two types of cherry trees are in Central Park: the Yoshino (a gift from Japan in 1912) and the Kwanzan. Each bloom at different times in the spring, with the Yoshino blossoming in mid-April and the Kwanzan in early May.

The best places to see both types of cherry trees are along both sides of the reservoir. For Yoshino trees in particular, head to Cherry Hill, Pilgrim Hill, and Neil Singer Lilac Walk. The best areas for the Kwanzan trees are Cedar Hill, The Glade, and the Great Lawn.

If you are traveling with young ones, and they need a chance to burn off some energy, take a stroll over to the Alice in Wonderland Statue located just north of the Conservatory Water area. Here, you and your youngest will be delighted to find an eleven-foot-high Alice sitting on a giant mushroom surrounded by other characters from the zany tale by Lewis Carroll.

First revealed in 1959, the statue has been a popular one. In fact, it's so popular that the bronze is rubbed to shiny finish from all the children playing on it over the years.

If someone told you that in the heart of New York, an ancient Egyptian monument dating from 1450 BCE existed, you may think that they were joking. Well, you would be wrong because such a thing does exist, and it's easily visited in Central Park.

A gift to the United States from Egypt in 1881, the Obelisk, or as it's also known locally, Cleopatra's Needle, stands 71 feet high near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics are carved into the structure.

If you are looking for a quiet part of the park with pleasant walking trails, Harlem Meer is a good place to start. Located in the north end of the park, Harlem Meer is home to a collection of aquatic birds, and in the summer, turtles can be seen sunning on rocks.

The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center is almost perfectly positioned, so that photos from across the lake frame it perfectly, with the buildings in the background. The center is worth a visit for its kids' programs that include free Discovery Kits for exploring the park, fishing poles for catch and release, and lawn games like bocce ball and ring toss.

We recommend these convenient hotels a short hop from Central park attractions:

• Park Hyatt New York : This hotel offers first-class luxury, a sophisticated style, and is just a block from Central Park. Other highlights include a pampering spa and heated indoor pool.
• Hotel Beacon : For a mid-range hotel offering good value, head to this hotel on the Upper West Side, near the Museum of Natural History. The Beacon offers spacious suites with kitchenettes.
• citizenM New York Times Square : Offering affordable rates, contemporary design, compact rooms with high-tech features, and free movies, this hotel is hard to beat.
• HI New York City Hostel : If you are serious about saving money, this hostel offers dorm-style rooms, a good-value café, communal kitchen, and free daily tours. This is also a perfect place for backpackers.

Central Park is huge, and exploring it can seem daunting, particularly if you have already spent time walking around the city. Navigating through the park can be time-consuming and tiring. If you only want to spend an hour or two in the park, here are some easy ways to see the highlights.

• Horse and Carriage Rides : A relaxing way to see the sites in the park is on a Private Horse and Carriage Ride in Central Park . These rides can hold up to four people and last about 45 to 50 minutes. This is a good way to see the bridges and fountains, as well as landmark features, such as Conservatory Water, Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, and Strawberry Fields.
• TV and Movie Sites Tour : Central Park has been the setting for hundreds of movies and TV shows. To see where some of the most famous scenes were shot take the Central Park TV and Movie Sites Walking Tour . This is a two-hour tour that takes you to locations seen in Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Avengers, When Harry Met Sally, Love Story, and Sex and the City.

The best of Central Park in 20 photos

   As I said in the previous article, 6 hours in New York, Central Park is definitely my dream park. Unfortunately, I didn’t visit it in all seasons, so I wasn’t able to enjoy the park being dressed in autumn colors, or see how nature revives in the springtime.

However, I did visit the park in summer and in winter, even during Christmas, so, overall, I had enough reasons to enjoy the things that the most visited urban park in the world has to offer.

       My visits to New York have always been quite short, but I always managed to make some time for the lungs of Manhattan (as they call Central Park for good reason). I collected 20 photos  that I made with my iPhone or my camera and I want to show them to you too.

       The Mall : I’m sure that this is a path you probably all know, even if you have never visited Central Park because it has appeared in many films. The American Elms stand in a straight line on each side of the alley, creating a splendid canopy above the green benches.

Each tree is monitored by the Central Park Conservancy. New Yorkers love to walk here during the summer days, because the shadow drops the temperature significantly, so the air becomes much more breathable.

The southern end of The Mall is called Literary Walk due to the number of statues of some of the most prominent writers.

   In Central Park take place many marriage proposals, but also sessions for wedding photos, or even mini parties with all sorts of occasions. For example, in one of my visits, a few wedding guests were gathered in this beautiful gazebo to celebrate.

    The Pond : this is probably the first thing you’ll notice entering the park from the North. It’s one of the seven naturalistic water bodies of Central Park and is highly valued by the ducks who love to swim here under the curious eyes of tourists. Also, right next to The Pond you can see the Gapstow Bridge .

    The cute squirrels : They are absolutely all over the place, and they are so familiar with people, that they will come to you asking for food without any fear. Therefore, if you happen to have some almonds, I think they will be glad to share.

     Bethesda Terrace :   It makes the connection between The Mall and The Lake . This place is also very famous. If you’re a fan of Gossip Girl , you definitely noticed it in one of the episodes, because it’s the place where Blair and Chuck got married.

    Bethesda Fountain is a beautiful architectural work, home to a few water lilies. The attraction of this fountain is the statue called Angel of the Waters , symbolizing purity and health.

    Activities that occur every day in Central Park, include, besides jogging, reading and relaxing on the grass in Sheep Meadow , short walks with your dog.

   Central Park has several beautiful gardens filled with flowers of all kinds. Of these, the best known are the Shakespeare Garden and Conservatory Garden .

     Wollman Rink:   It is a gift offered by Kate Wollman and was inaugurated in 1950. Since then, it has become a tradition for New Yorkers to skate here in every winter. Thanks to the superb panorama, the rink has also appeared in acclaimed movies such as Love Story (1970) or Serendipity (2001) .

   You just can’t make the most of Central Park , until you walk hand in hand with your lover while enjoying your Starbucks coffee together.

    The Lake :  The easiest way to get here is if you come from the North entrance, crossing The Mall and going down the stairs to Bethesda Fountain . With an area of 22 acres , it certainly is the largest of Central Park ’s naturalistic water bodies.

Although it may seem very natural, you should know that this, along with the rest of the park was created by a team formed of designer Frederick Law Olmstead and architect Calvert Vaux .

   Since I mentioned The Lake , I need to also mention the most beautiful bridge that stands over it. It’s Bow Bridge , the most photographed bridge in Central Park . You can get to it walking or passing under, by boat.

This bridge had been also featured in many famous movies, such as Manhattan (1979) , Made of Honor (2008) , Night at the Museum (2006) , Romeo and Juliet (1908) , Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) etc.

   I walked through this beautiful park in the daylight, evening, at dusk and in the night, when I had the pleasure to meet a family of raccoons, hidden under one of the 36 bridges in the park.

   I recommend you taking a walk through the park in the moonlight. It is fabulous and you will have wonderful views of Manhattan’s skyline .

Doctor Shahnoz Rustamova was born into a big family that has seven generations of medical doctors. Shahnoz Rustamova has become a doctor herself, and now she owns her private Clinic, Central Park Medical Practice in Midtown Manhattan.

Dr. Shahnoz Rustamova is board certified by the American Board of Obstetric and Gynecology (ABOG) and specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hormonal Replacement Therapy, Hormonal imbalance, Mental health, and Nutrition IV infusion. She is also a member of the North American Menopause Society.

Dr. Shahnoz Rustamova is continuously in process of learning and passing on her knowledge to her staff. She trains students who are serving their internships at her Clinic. Many of her interns get a start in their professional lives with her help. Dr. Rustamova instills and supports their desire to improve their education and to spend their lives, as she does, serving others in the medical field. At the Clinic, everyone studies and shares their knowledge with other staff members here at the Central Park Medical Practice. She is currently one of the most well-known, respected Gynecologists in New York City.

Where in Moscow can you feel like you’re in New York’s Central Park? How to see the entire city from one observation deck and what’s unusual about a regular business center?

The Floating Bridge in Zaryadye

Zaryadye Park is located in the very center of Moscow, near the Red Square. The V-shaped floating bridge hovers over the Moskva River and, from the right angle, you can catch the Kremlin or the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment building on camera. The bridge always has a lot of people on it, so it’ll be a mission to take a photo without strangers in it!

The Sparrow Hills observation deck

It’s located right across from the main building of Moscow State University and offers a panoramic view of Moscow. From there, you can see Moscow City, the White House, Luzhniki Stadium, Stalin’s skyscrapers and Novodevichy Convent . From the deck, you can take a selfie with the entire Moscow behind you, then you can turn around and take a photo against Moscow State University!

The Izmailovo Kremlin

This “toy” kremlin was created in 2003; today, you can find a cathedral, workshops, museums and cafes there. Entry is free, so you can take a photo against any building of the ensemble. If you want to catch the entire kremlin on camera, stand on the white-red pedestrian bridge.

Krasnogvardeyskiye Prudy

This now-trendy photo location is very reminiscent of Central Park in New York with its combination of greenery and city skyline. To get a good angle, head to the wooden deck near the ponds, stand closer to the handrails and be sure that you don’t have any construction going on behind you.

The observation deck of the Federation Tower

You can take a selfie at a height of 327 meters with a panoramic view of Moscow on the ‘Panorama360’ observation deck of one of the towers in Moscow City. However, a single-visit ticket will cost you up to 2,900 rubles (approx. $32!), depending on the age of the visitor, so you better make your selfie count!

The Narkomfin Building

One of the most famous examples of the Constructivist style buildings of the Soviet era became a favorite place for photographers. Initially, this building was erected for the employees of the Ministry of Finances of the USSR – that’s how the building received its name. Today, it is just a regular residential block; however, only the residents of the building can get inside without booking an excursion. But, you’re allowed to take photos outside; entry to the territory of the building is also free.

‘White Square’

In reality, this is the name of a business center, but the space around it is now dubbed the same. The location is interesting, because this modern office complex towers around an Old Believers’ church. If you pick the right angle, you can even catch the reflection of the church in the mirror windows of the business center!

This creative cluster was built on the site of a former factory. You’ll find stores, cafes, offices, as well as educational institutions. The space is decorated with graffiti and with sculptures by modern artists. To get the majority of the cluster in your selfie, it’s better to climb higher – for example, go on an excursion around the territory with roof access. But, keep in mind that excursions here are not held every day and you should buy a ticket in advance – it costs 1,500 rubles (approx. $17). Without an excursion entry to the territory of the cluster is free.

The observation deck of the Central Children’s Store

There’s an observation deck on the roof of the Central Children’s Store . Thanks to the Central Children’s Store’s location, a selfie from there will catch almost all main landmarks of the capital’s center. The entrance is on the 6th floor; the entry fee is 199 rubles (approx. $2.20).

Mosfilm film sets

If you already have a photo with a backdrop of modern Moscow, you can head to the Mosfilm movie studio pavilion. There, you’ll find a movie set complex, depicting the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg in the 19th century. However, you can only go to Mosfilm on an official excursion – a ticket for a group excursion costs up to 750 rubles (approx. $8.30).

What is the history of Gorky Park?

• In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
• In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
• Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park?

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons.
