How to Use Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card’s $50 Hotel Credit Benefit? [2023]

On August 15, 2021, Chase added a $50 hotel credit benefit to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card . The benefit resets every account anniversary, and you can use the benefit for any hotel accommodation purchased through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel site.

Table of Contents

How the Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit Benefit Works

  • The $50 hotel credit is good per your card membership year, not the calendar year:
  • If you applied and approved for the card, you can use the $50 hotel credit benefit immediately.
  • The Chase system makes it easy to know when you can use the $50 hotel credit benefit. See below under When Are You Eligible For Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit?
  • You can only use the credit once per card membership year . So you use it or lose it!
  • You don’t have to spend $50 at once, and the credit is good up to a maximum annual accumulation of $50, including taxes and fees. In other words, if your booking is less than $50, you’ll receive a statement credit in that amount and have credit left over for your next hotel booking through Chase.
  • You can use the credit for hotel reservations made through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel site. There’s no minimum stay requirement.
  • You must book through  Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel . So you won’t earn points or elite night credits through your favorite hotel loyalty programs.
  • You receive the credit as a statement credit that will automatically be applied to your account.

When Are You Eligible For Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit?

  • Go to the  Chase Ultimate Rewards Benefit  page.
  • Select Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card from the list if you have multiple Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR)  earning cards.
  • Under Featured Benefits , click on Learn More under the  $50 annual Chase Travel hotel credit.
  • Under the Offer Overview , you can find out your next account anniversary date that you are eligible for the $50 hotel credit. See the screenshot below.

How to Redeem the Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit

  • The Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 hotel credit benefit will be issued as a statement credit after your qualifying hotel booking(s) through Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel .
  • The benefit resets every card membership year , not the calendar year.
  • Go directly to the Chase Ultimate Rewards hotel booking site .
  • Log in with your Chase account if you are not logged in.
  • Select Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card from the list if you have multiple  Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR)  earning cards.
  • Enter your hotel search parameters and click on the green Search button
  • Review your hotel’s reservation details and follow the booking interface to finalize your booking. Make sure you pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card.
  • Once your purchase is posted to your Chase Sapphire Preferred account, Chase will automatically issue up to a $50 hotel statement credit to your account within a few days.

Can You Use the $50 Hotel Credit For Points & Cash Bookings?

  • You pay with Chase Sapphire Preferred points 100%.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth 25% more when redeeming them for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
  • You pay with cash only.
  • You pay with Chase Sapphire Preferred points plus cash. (See the screenshot below).

How Long Does It Take for Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Statement Credit to Post?

  • Statement credit(s) will post to your account within two days after your purchase posts and appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles.
  • July 28 – Purchased a hotel reservation for $102.90 (after taxes and fees) through the  Chase Ultimate Rewards hotel booking site .
  • August 2 – $50 annual hotel credit was issued.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Hotel Credit Not Showing Up

  • Ensure your purchase is eligible through the  Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel .
  • Your Chase Sapphire Preferred account has the charge posted.
  • Wait a few days after the charge is posted to see if the credit is posted, if not:
  • Ensure your Chase Sapphire Preferred account has not used the $50 hotel credit during the card membership year . To do so, read the section in this post:  When Are You Eligible For Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit? It will clearly state whether or not you have the $50 hotel credit to use.
  • Contact Chase via secured message or call as the last resort so that they can manually review the issue.

4 thoughts on “ How to Use Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card’s $50 Hotel Credit Benefit? [2023] ”

I applied this card in branch at Aug 26, and have the $50 Hotel Credit benefit. In the Chase Ultimate Rewards Benefit page, it shows "You have until your statement closing date on 09/20/2022 to earn towards this year's statement credit". I am confused that shoudn't it be like for the card opened after Aug 15,2021, I am eligible to use the $50 hotel credit benefit immediately?

Hello, that statement means that you have until 09/20/2022 to use that $50 hotel credit. So yes, you can use that $50 hotel credit benefit any time through September 2022.

I attempted to use this benefit. I booked a hotel through ultimate rewards on 8/22 (I opened my card in late July, but the benefit came up on my account so I believe I should have access to it). I called about a week later because the credit hadn’t posted, and they said it can take up to 14 days. I called again today (over two weeks later) and they said the credit won’t post until my card anniversary next July?? That will be months after the hotel stay! I’m very frustrated as this was not at all clear in the terms.

I think the hotel credit benefit is too new, so Chase agents are not quite familiar with it yet. Because you applied for the card in late July, you cannot use that credit until your card's next anniversary date. This means that the hotel credit benefit that you attempted to use will not be reimbursed or posted at all even after your next anniversary date. What the Chase agent told you was not correct.

The way it works is you must book the hotel "after" the benefit is available for you to use which is your card's next anniversary date because you applied in late July. If you attempt to use it before that, you will not be getting the credit. Please see the section in this article "When Are You Eligible For Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit?" so you know exactly when that benefit will be available for you to use next year.

If the hotel reservation offers free cancellation, you can cancel and receive a refund.

How to Use the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card $50 Hotel Credit in 2024

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Hotel Credit

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ‘s $95 annual fee is deceiving — but in a good way. While you’ll still be on the hook for the $95 yearly, the easy-to-use $50 hotel credit partially offsets it. Here is how to use it.

Table of Contents

What is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card $50 Hotel Credit?

Cardholders can earn up to $50 in statement credits for hotels booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal each account anniversary year. Chase defines this as “the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year”. This differs from other credits which are determined by the calendar year — for example, January 1 through December 31.

Unfortunately, there is no double dipping. Usually, cardholders earn 5x points per dollar spent on travel booked through Chase. Hotel purchases that qualify for the $50 credit do not earn the usual 5x points.

How to Use the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card $50 Hotel Credit

The credit is easy to use, and no registration is necessary. Here is how to earn it.

First, log in to your Chase account.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Hotel Credit Click Travel

Click one of the following two links located towards the upper right corner of your account screen.

Both will get you where you need to be, but clicking Travel is quicker .

Chase Sapphire Preferred Hotel Credit Booking Travel

If it is not already selected, choose your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card in the upper right corner. Then click the Hotels button.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Hotel Credit Searching

Enter the following details on the next screen.

  • Destination (city, airport, address, or landmark)
  • Check-in Date
  • Check-out Date
  • Number of Guests
  • Optional Features (hotel brand and star rating)

Chase Sapphire Preferred Hotel Credit Pick Hotel

Pick your room and complete the checkout process. You will have the option to pay with points, cash, or a combination. You can do a combination, but make sure you are charging at least $50 to your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card .

That’s it! Your hotel credit will appear in your online account within the next few days.

What Purchases Count? What Purchases Do Not Count?

Only hotel bookings through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal using your Chase Sapphire Preferred are eligible for the $50 statement credit.

Here are purchases that will not trigger the credit.

  • Hotels booked direct using your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
  • Hotels booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards using only points
  • Hotels booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards using other Chase cards
  • Hotels booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards with your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card after already fully earning your yearly $50 credit (these bookings do earn 5x points per dollar spent, however)

When to Forgo Using the Hotel Credit

You should avoid using your hotel credit at brands where you hold status. Unfortunately, many hotels will not honor your elite benefits when booking reservations through online travel agencies, like the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. Here are some popular elite benefits you may be forgoing.

  • Free Breakfast
  • Early or Late Check Out
  • Free Room Upgrades
  • Waived Resort Fees

Additionally, you may not earn qualifying nights when booking through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Finally, check to see the price difference between booking direct and booking through Chase while earning the $50 credit. In some cases, it may be cheaper to book direct even when taking into account the $50 credit.

That is because holding status, even low levels, may provide discounts. Higher status levels may even enjoy waived resort fees, which further decrease the price.

How Does this Credit Compare to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® $300 Travel Credit?

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® ($550 annual fee) offers cardholders a $300 annual travel credit. This credit is much easier to earn than the Sapphire Preferred $50 hotel credit. Essentially, anything that codes as travel is eligible. Here are some examples.

  • Hotels & Motels
  • Airlines (tickets, seat upgrades, bags)
  • Car Rental Agencies
  • Travel Agencies & Discount Travel Sites
  • Campgrounds
  • Parking Lots & Parking Garages
  • Toll Bridges, Highways, & Tunnels
  • Car Services (including Buses, Taxis, Lyft and Uber)

Travel purchased via OTAs are also eligible for statement credits. Using the full $300 travel credit reduces the net annual fee from $550 to only $250.

For comparison, using the full Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 hotel credit reduces the net annual fee from $95 to only $45.

Book a hotel with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card as the payment method via the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal.

Purchases qualifying for the hotel credit do not earn points. After the full $50 is earned for the year, cardholders then earn 5x points per dollar spent for hotels booked via Chase.

It takes 1 to 2 days.

No, there is no minimum spend or length of stay.

The Vacationer’s Final Thoughts

The $50 annual hotel credit is one of the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s best benefits. Not only is it easy to use, but it essentially reduces the already low $95 annual fee to only $45. With travel fully back, it makes a lot of sense to select the Chase Sapphire Preferred as your next travel credit card .

Chase Sapphire Preferred $50 Hotel Credit Guide [2021]

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is once again one of the hottest travel rewards credit cards. This is due in large part to the industry-leading welcome bonus that was recently increased to 100,000 points but it also is due to the additional enhancements to the card. One of these enhancements was a new $50 hotel credit.

But how exactly do you use this credit and is it actually a good deal?

In this article, I will break down how you can use this credit and some pros and cons that might make you think twice about the value of the credit.

Table of Contents

What is the $50 annual Ultimate Rewards hotel credit ?

The $50 hotel credit is a credit issued every year that can go towards a hotel booking made via the Chase Travel Portal.

If you were approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred on or after August 16, 2021 you will instantly be able to use the credit once your account is open. However, if you had the card opened before that date you will have to wait until your account anniversary to use the credit. After that, you will receive the $50 credit every account anniversary.

Tip: You can easily keep track of your credit card perks like the $50 hotel credit with the free app WalletFlo . It will also keep you up-to-date on all of the latest promos and credit card offers. So be sure to check it out!

chase sapphire $50 travel credit

How to use the $50 hotel credit

To use the credit, you need to log into the Chase Travel Portal at ultimaterewards.com.

If you have multiple Chase cards you will be asked to select your card and make sure that you select your Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Once you are logged in, navigate to the travel screen. On desktop, you simply click on the three bars in the left hand corner and then scroll down to “Travel” and click on that.

Next, navigate to “Hotels” and then simply go through your search and booking process as you normally would. You should be able to use your credit on any of the hotels you find in the search results so feel free to book any property you’d like.

chase sapphire $50 travel credit

After you make your hotel booking, the statement credit should automatically post to your account within two days of your purchase posting to your account. It should then appear on your monthly billing statement within 1 to 2 billing cycles.

In my experience, Chase has been pretty solid with posting credits quickly. But in the event you do not see your credit after a week or two, you can always call the number on the back of your card and inquire about it.

Is it worth it?

So now that you know how the credit works, a big question is whether or not the credit is worth it?

In other words, in light of the $95 annual fee that the Chase Sapphire Preferred has, does this credit provide sufficient value to make the card a keeper?

The answer to that question is that it depends .

The biggest knock against the $50 hotel credit is that you have to use it on a hotel booked through the Chase Travel Portal, which is powered by none other than Expedia.

This means that you will miss out on hotel elite perks for your stay. For example, you will almost assuredly not get any type of elite night credits for your stay or earn loyalty points for the respective elite program.

There is still hope for your elite status benefits such as upgrades, free breakfast, late check-out , etc. In order to maximize your odds of receiving those benefits, you should call or email the hotel ahead of time and ask them to add your loyalty number to your reservation.

You can also do this when you arrive at the property but I find it better to do it ahead of time before you actually arrive at the property/check-in desk.

I have booked a number of hotel stays through online travel agencies over the past few years and have had a tremendous amount of success with receiving elite status benefits with Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt.

Because you can still receive some of your elite status perks (albeit with a little bit of extra work and luck), I think the $50 hotel credit still holds a lot of value for many travelers.

Tip: Because you lose out on other elite benefits, credits like this are often good for non-chain hotel bookings. So if you can find a cozy cabin located off the grid in the Chase Travel Portal, you might get more value on a stay like that.

It’s worth pointing out that the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers some other solid perks.

There is the $60 Peloton credit that is good for digital memberships and all access memberships. Together with the $50 hotel credit, you could actually turn a small profit with this card!

Other major benefits include:

  • 25% bonus when using points in the Chase Travel Portal
  • 12 months of DashPass
  • Primary rental car coverage
  • 10% anniversary points

And then you have the solid bonus categories like 3X on dining, streaming, and online groceries. So just make sure you’re aware that there are major value opportunities beyond the $50 hotel credit, since some of these perks could offset the $95 annual fee by themselves.

No, if you do not use the $50 credit, you will not be able to utilize it in the next year.

The credit is automatically applied to your card when you make a hotel booking through the Chase Travel Portal. It does not require activation.

The $50 hotel credit is issued every anniversary year.

No, you do not earn additional bonus points on the $50 portion of your hotel purchase.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is no doubt one of the most popular credit cards for travelers right now. The $50 hotel credit makes it a lot easier to offset the already relatively low annual fee of $95. However, you do lose out on some potentially valuable perks when utilizing this credit and that is something that everyone should be aware of.

How to maximize your rewards earning with the Chase Sapphire Preferred

Joseph Hostetler

Editor's Note

We often say the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is the best first credit card for those learning about the points and miles hobby. That's not because the card is a "beginner" card — quite the opposite. Many of us at TPG still have the Sapphire Preferred because it's integral to our travel rewards strategy.

We highlight it for a couple of reasons:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points are versatile and easy to use . Anyone getting started in credit card rewards will have no trouble saving a lot of money with them.
  • The card has solid ongoing benefits that are not points-related.
  • The card typically comes with a generous sign-up bonus.

In fact, right now, new applicants for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card can earn a bonus of 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. The card comes with a $95 annual fee, but it's relatively easy to cover it (and then some).

Let's look at how you can maximize the Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits to ensure you're saving the most money — and earning the most points — as organically possible. It'll help you gauge whether the card is worth keeping year after year.

Overview of the Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits

Here are the notable benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred:

  • $50 annual credit on hotel stays purchased through Ultimate Rewards.
  • 10% points bonus each year based on your card spending (e.g., if you spend $10,000, you'll receive 1,000 bonus points).
  • 5 points per dollar on Lyft (through March 2025) and travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal .
  • 5 points per dollar on each Peloton equipment and accessory purchases of $250 or more — with a limit of 25,000 points (through March 2025).
  • At least 12 months of complimentary DashPass for use with both DoorDash and Caviar (when you activate by Dec, 31, 2024).
  • 3 points per dollar on dining and select streaming services.
  • 2 points per dollar on all travel not booked through the Chase Travel Portal.
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else.
  • Primary rental car insurance .
  • Trip delay insurance .
  • Baggage delay insurance .
  • Extended warranty protection .
  • No foreign transaction fees.

You don't have to be a points and miles enthusiast to appreciate the card. These perks make the Chase Sapphire Preferred a very practical card for anyone who vacations even just once or twice per year.

With a $95 annual fee, the travel protections alone make this card worth the price tag. And because the card quickly racks up rewards, you'll have a small fortune in Chase points by the time you're confident enough to use them.

Strategies for maximizing the Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred's current bonus is 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. TPG values that bonus at $1,200 — though you can get significantly more than that if you learn the Chase Ultimate Rewards sweet spots .

chase sapphire $50 travel credit

Once you've used the bonus, what's the best way to maximize this card?

Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for airfare

The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on airfare booked through the Chase Travel Portal and 2 points per dollar when booked through an online travel agency or directly with the airline. But amassing points is not the primary motivator for using the card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred will automatically give you two significant benefits (among others) when booking air travel:

  • Trip delay insurance : You are covered for up to $500 per ticket when your flight is delayed 12 hours or more (or if your delay/cancellation results in an unexpected overnight).
  • Baggage delay insurance : You and your immediate family are entitled to up to $100 per day in reimbursement (for up to five days) to cover the purchase of necessary expenses like clothes, toiletries, etc. This benefit kicks in when your bags are delayed six hours or more.

These perks alone are enough for many to keep the card year after year.

Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for hotels via the Chase travel portal

Each anniversary year, the Chase Sapphire Preferred comes with a $50 statement credit for a hotel stay booked via the Chase Travel Portal. You'll also receive 5 points per dollar for booking travel through the Chase Travel Portal (though the $50 credit won't earn points). That's a great pair of benefits capable of wooing anyone who normally books hotels via an online travel agency like Expedia or Priceline.

chase sapphire $50 travel credit

Just note that this may not be the best option if you're booking a major chain that's part of a hotel loyalty program like Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. Chase is considered a third-party platform for the purposes of these reservations, which means that you likely won't earn points on the stay (and you may not be able to enjoy any elite status perks either).

You could always call the individual property after booking (or try to add your loyalty number at check-in), but it may not work. As a result, your best bet is to use this perk for non-chain hotels or boutique properties.

Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for rental cars

Here's another stand-alone benefit that may justify the Chase Sapphire Preferred's $95 annual fee for many travelers: when you pay for a rental car with the card, you can waive the in-house rental agency's pricey Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance — which can cost upwards of $15 per day — and you'll still receive primary rental car insurance , courtesy of Chase.

Note that this covers damage and theft to the card without going through your own, personal insurance company. You'll also earn 5 points per dollar if you book your rental through the Chase Travel Portal. However, this doesn't include liability insurance (damage to the car you crashed into, for example).

Use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay at restaurants

The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 3 points per dollar at restaurants — whether you're ordering takeout or dining in. That's a great benefit to stack with the fact that the card offers one complimentary year (at least) of DashPass membership with DoorDash (when you activate by Dec. 31, 2024). You'll get free deliveries on orders totaling more than $12 and earn 3 points per dollar on your purchase. That equates to 6% back on your meal.

When not to use the Chase Sapphire Preferred

In some situations, your Chase Sapphire Preferred is best left in its holster.

Don't use your Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for non-bonus purchases

The card earns 1 point per dollar on all expenses that don't fall into a bonus category. That's not a reasonable return rate. There are plenty of cards (some with $0 annual fees) that will better serve you for these transactions. If you want to stay focused on collecting Chase Ultimate Rewards, swipe your Chase Freedom Unlimited to earn a minimum of 1.5% cash-back (1.5 points per dollar) on all purchases.

Don't forfeit other card benefits by using your Chase Sapphire Preferred

If you've got other credit cards that provide valuable benefits for specific purchases, don't use the Chase Sapphire Preferred out of loyalty.

chase sapphire $50 travel credit

For example, you can receive a free checked bag with United Airlines when you use your qualifying United Airlines credit card to pay for your flight. That could save you $60 round-trip and is well worth using your United card.

Or if you book the same hotel brand often and elite status is important to you, use the hotel's cobranded credit card to pay for your stays instead of the Sapphire Preferred. You'll earn more points that way. For instance:

  • The World of Hyatt Credit Card earns 4 points per dollar at Hyatt hotels (6.8% return based on TPG valuations).
  • The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card earns 12 points per dollar on eligible Hilton purchases (7.2% return based on TPG valuations ).

Bottom line

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is well worth the $95 annual fee each year if you know how to maximize the card. The card packs a punch between its annual $50 hotel credit, the myriad travel insurances and its generous earning rates. And considering the bonus is a solid 60,000 points, applying right now is a no-brainer.

1. Up to $50 in annual hotel credits

Every account anniversary year, cardholders receive up to $50 of hotel credits when booking reservations through Chase Travel. These credits cover a portion of your hotel stay and can offset over half of the card’s annual fee.

Travel reservations made through Chase Travel usually earn 5 points per dollar, which is another great reason to book through the Chase travel portal. However, you will not earn points on the spending that qualifies for the $50 annual hotel credit.

2. Points are worth 25% more when booking travel

The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points that have tremendous flexibility. When using these points to book travel through the Chase Travel portal, they’re worth 25% more. In other words, you get a redemption value of 1.25 cents per point. For example, 60,000 points are worth $750 in travel compared to redeeming your 60,000 points to get $600 in cash back or gift cards.

3. Transfer points to 14 airline and hotel partners

In addition to booking travel or getting cash back, cardholders can also transfer Ultimate Rewards points to 14 airline and hotel partners. Points transfer to 11 airlines and three hotel loyalty programs on a 1:1 basis without any transfer fees. Transfer partners include United Airlines, Air Canada, Air France, Marriott and Hyatt.

Transferring points tends to offer the highest value redemptions as you can often find outsize value when using your rewards to book peak travel dates, high-end hotels and premium cabin flights vs. what you’d pay in cash.

4. Get a 10% bonus every year

Unlike the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s welcome bonus , which is a one-time windfall, on your account anniversary, you’ll receive unlimited bonus points worth 10% of your total purchases made during the previous year. For example, that means if you spend $50,000 over the 12 months of your account anniversary year, you’ll get 5,000 bonus points.

5. Repay eligible purchases up to 24 months without interest

The Chase Sapphire Preferred doesn’t offer a 0% intro APR period on purchases or balance transfers. However, you can use the My Chase Plan® to break up purchases of $100 or more into fixed monthly payments for up to 24 months without interest. Instead of interest charges, you’ll pay a fixed monthly fee to use this benefit.

6. Complimentary travel protections

Chase includes complimentary travel protections in case you encounter problems during your trip. When booking reservations with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you’re covered against trip cancellation, interruption and delays. Coverage includes up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses if your trip is canceled or interrupted.

When your trip is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, you can receive up to $500 per ticket for meals, lodging and other eligible expenses. Baggage delay benefits provide up to $100 per day per person for five days to cover the essentials if your baggage is delayed more than six hours.

Rental cars are protected against damage or theft when you decline rental car collision insurance and charge the entire reservation to your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. This coverage is primary, which is rare in a card at this affordable price point.

7. Benefits that protect your purchases

Your eligible purchases are protected against damage or theft for the first 120 days. Purchase protection claims are good for up to $500 per item and $50,000 per account.

Chase also includes extended warranty protection on eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less. This benefit provides an extra year of coverage on eligible items.

8. Partner benefits earn bonus points and save money

Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits include bonus points and savings with exclusive partnerships with popular brands. Lyft rides earn 5 points per dollar through March 2025. DoorDash provides a one-year, complimentary DashPass membership offering $0 delivery fees and lower service fees.

Cardholders can save money with a complimentary Instacart+ membership for six months and up to $15 in statement credits each quarter through July 2024.

9. No foreign transaction fees

Bring your Chase Sapphire Preferred when traveling internationally because it waives foreign transaction fees. This benefit avoids a hidden fee of up to 3% on international purchases that many other credit cards charge. For example, $5,000 in purchases in another country could incur up to $150 in foreign transaction fees if you used a credit card that charges such a fee.

10. Spend instantly upon approval

When you apply for a new credit card, you typically have to wait up to 10 days to receive your physical card before you can start spending. If you’re approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred , new cardholders can start spending right away by adding the card to their digital wallets. This enables them to get a head start on meeting the requirements to earn the card’s welcome bonus .

11. Refer friends and earn bonus points

In addition to earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points on your purchases, you can also earn points by referring your friends and family to the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You’ll receive 15,000 points for each friend who is approved for the card. Chase allows cardholders to earn up to 75,000 bonus points each year with successful referrals, which is worth over $900 in travel booked through the Chase Travel portal.

Should travelers get the Chase Sapphire Preferred card?

With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is such a valuable travel credit card. It earns  5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases, includes travel and purchase protections, and points can be redeemed in numerous ways. This card offers advantages whether you’re traveling internationally or making daily purchases in your local area. Plus, it includes limited-time partner offers that earn bonus points and provide savings on your purchases.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

When you rent a car and pay with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you’ll automatically receive complimentary primary rental car coverage against damage or theft.

And when using points to pay for your rental car reservation through Chase Travel, you’ll get 25% more value per point than you would if redeeming your rewards for cash back.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred includes numerous travel protection benefits in case your trip doesn’t go as planned. You’ll receive trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits, as well as baggage delay insurance. Plus, your rental car is protected against damage or theft.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Chase sapphire preferred.

Earning Points: See your Card Rewards Program Agreement (PDF) for more details.

Travel Through Chase Ultimate Rewards: When you use points to redeem for cash, each point is worth $.01 (one cent), which means that 100 points equals $1 in redemption value. Each point you redeem for travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards is worth $.0125 (one and a quarter cents), which means that 100 points equals $1.25 in redemption value, and points are worth 25% more than if redeemed for cash. For example, 50,000 points are worth $625 when redeemed for travel purchases, or $500 when redeemed for cash. The cost of travel is based on the rates and fares available through the Ultimate Rewards website and travel center, and may not reflect all rates and fares that are available through other sales channels. If you choose to use points and your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card to pay for your purchase, each point will be worth $.0125, but your credit card will be charged the full remaining dollar amount.

$50 Annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for hotel accommodation purchases made through the Ultimate Rewards program, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50. Annual means the year beginning with your first account anniversary after 08/15/2021 through the first statement date after your next account anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. To see when you are eligible for your next $50 Annual Credit visit chase.com/ultimaterewards . Annually, the first $50 in Ultimate Rewards hotel purchases will not earn rewards points. Statement credit(s) will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles after your purchase posts to your account.

Complimentary DashPass from DoorDash: You and your authorized user(s) will receive at least 12 months of complimentary DashPass for use on both the DoorDash and Caviar applications during the same membership period based on the first activation date, when the membership is activated with a Chase Sapphire Preferred card by 12/31/2024. Membership period for all users on this Chase Sapphire account will begin and end based on when the first user activates the membership on DoorDash or Caviar. The same login credentials must be used on DoorDash and Caviar in order for the DashPass benefit to be used on both applications. To receive the membership benefits, the primary cardmember and authorized user(s) must first add their Chase Sapphire card as a default payment method on DoorDash or Caviar, and then click the activation button. Once enrolled in DashPass, you must use your Chase Sapphire card for payment at checkout for DashPass-eligible orders to receive DashPass benefits. Benefits of DashPass from DoorDash include no delivery fee on orders above the minimum subtotal (as stated in the DoorDash and Caviar apps and sites) from DashPass eligible merchants (amounts subject to change). Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by DoorDash or Caviar are not within Chase’s control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, DoorDash or Caviar benefits and services. If you product change to another Chase credit card eligible for a DashPass membership during the promotional period, your DashPass benefits may change. You may experience a delay in updating your applicable DashPass benefits on DoorDash or Caviar; please note, once you product trade, the benefits from your previous credit card are no longer available for your use. You can only access the benefits available with your current credit card. Your Chase Sapphire account must be open and not in default to maintain membership benefits. 5 total points (“5X points”) on qualifying Lyft rides through 03/2025: You’ll earn an additional 3 points for each $1 spent when your card is used for qualifying Lyft products and services purchased through the Lyft mobile application through 03/31/2025. Qualifying Lyft products and services include rides taken in Classic, Shared, Lux, or XL modes; bike and scooter rides; and subscription and membership products. Purchase of gift cards, car rentals, vehicle service centers, miscellaneous fees and other Lyft products and services are excluded from this promotion. Future Lyft products or services may not be eligible for additional points. You may see “5X” in marketing materials to refer to the 3 points in addition to the 2 point(s) earned on travel purchases. The additional 3 points will appear on your billing statement in a separate line from the 2 point(s). Lyft is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Chase benefits or services.

Complimentary Instacart+ Membership: You will receive one complimentary Instacart+ membership per eligible card account for 6 months (for Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire cardmembers) when the membership is activated on http://www.instacart.com/chase with an eligible card between 6/15/2022 and 7/31/2024. (“You” and “your” mean you as the primary cardmember or any authorized user, depending on which user activates first). This offer is non-transferrable. Membership must be activated with a United States address. Payment through third-party payment accounts, or online or mobile digital wallets (like Apple Pay and Google Pay), or memberships purchased through third parties are excluded from this offer. Benefits of Instacart’s membership include no delivery fee on orders that total over $35 (amount subject to change – see Instacart.com for current minimum); however, other fees, taxes, and/or tips may apply. Delivery subject to availability. If you do not currently have a paid or trial Instacart+ membership, by activating your Instacart+ membership, you agree to the Instacart+ Terms and you agree that after the complimentary Instacart+ membership period ends, you will be automatically enrolled in an annual Instacart+ membership and billed at $99/year or the then current annual Instacart+ membership rate for each membership activated, unless you have not placed any orders or you cancel during your complimentary Instacart+ membership period. If you currently have a paid or trial Instacart+ membership, you agree that your existing membership will be paused for the duration of this benefit and resume upon expiration. Your existing membership will automatically renew based on the Instacart+ Terms previously agreed upon unless you cancel. Your membership fees will be billed to any active payment method on file until you cancel. You can cancel your Instacart+ membership prior to the end of your complimentary Instacart+ membership period or at any time thereafter by selecting “Cancel Membership” in your Account Settings. Cancellation goes into effect during the next billing cycle. You may cancel within the first 15 calendar days of your paid Instacart+ membership and receive a refund of the Instacart+ membership fee you paid, but only if you have not placed any orders using your Instacart+ membership. If you change to another Chase credit card during the promotional period, your benefits may change. Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by Instacart are not within Chase’s control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Instacart benefits and services. Your complimentary membership benefits may be removed if your eligible credit card account is closed or in default.

Statement Credit on Instacart Purchases: Earn up to $15 per calendar quarter (for Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire cardmembers) in statement credits on qualifying Instacart purchases from 8/1/2022 through 7/31/2024 when you activate a complimentary Chase Instacart+ membership on Instacart.com/chase with your eligible Chase credit card. Calendar quarters are Jan – March, April – June, July – September, October – December, and the partial calendar quarters at the beginning and end of the promotional period. You can check the status of your enrollment in the Chase benefit within the Instacart+ section of the Instacart mobile app. You will continue to receive statement credit benefits regardless of whether you choose to renew your Instacart+ membership at the end of your complimentary period. Qualifying Instacart purchases include only those orders purchased by you, or an authorized user, with a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card through Instacart.com or the Instacart mobile application (gift cards excluded). Statement credit(s) will post to your account within 48 hours of your qualifying Instacart purchase posting to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. Statement credits will be issued for the calendar quarter in which the transaction posts to your account. For example, if you pay for an Instacart order, but Instacart does not post the transaction until after the current calendar quarter ends, the cost of the Instacart purchase will be allocated towards the next calendar quarter’s maximum, or will not qualify if the promotional period has ended. If you change to another Chase credit card during the promotional period, your benefits may change. Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by Instacart are not within Chase’s control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Instacart benefits and services. Accounts must be open and not in default at the time the statement credit posts to your account. INSTACART ® , the Instacart Carrot logo, the Instacart Partial Carrot logo, and the Instacart Carrot Top logo are trademarks of Maplebear Inc., d/b/a Instacart. Instacart may not be available in all zip or post codes. See Instacart Terms of Service for more details.

$300 Annual Travel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for purchases in the travel category, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $300. Annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. (For applications submitted before May 21, 2017, annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first December statement date of that same year, and the 12 billing cycles starting after your December statement date through the following December statement date each year.) Call the number on the back of your card to see when you are eligible for your next $300 Annual Travel Credit. Purchases are when you, or an authorized user, use a card to make purchases of products and services. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won’t count: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. We do not determine whether merchants correctly identify and bill transactions as being of a certain type. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs . Statement credit(s) will post to your account the same day your travel category purchase posts to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. The Annual Travel Credit will be issued for the year in which the transaction posts to your account. For example, if you pay for baggage fees, but the airline does not post the transaction until after the current annual period ends, the cost of the baggage fees will be allocated towards the following year’s Annual Travel Credit maximum of $300.

Before moving any further, let’s ensure you’re familiar with the long list of travel protections built into the Chase Sapphire Preferred card :

  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance
  • Trip delay reimbursement

You’ll also enjoy several other cardholder benefits and protections beyond travel insurance :

  • Extended warranty protection
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Purchase protection
  • Roadside dispatch
  • Travel and emergency assistance

Some of the benefits seem more obvious than others. And, as with all insurance, there are always specific terms to understand, exclusions to mind, and coverage limits . Let’s clear some of those up.

1. What Flight Insurance Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card Have?

When flying, you’ll have 2 types of insurance: travel accident insurance and trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Both types are in effect for trips for which you paid at least a portion of the cost with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Let’s look at each benefit.

Travel accident insurance applies to you and your immediate family members if one of you becomes permanently injured or dies while traveling. The cardholder benefit guide lists specific dollar amounts that you can be paid for specific injury types. The coverage is further divided into 2 categories: traveling on a common carrier and 24-hour coverage .

Coverage related to a common carrier covers both injuries and death resulting from your travel on a licensed air, land, or sea transport that regularly carries paying passengers . Think planes and ferries, for example. You’ll also be covered while at an airport, terminal, or station immediately before or after a trip, including courtesy transport to or from these places if provided as part of your trip. If your flight booking includes the airline picking you up from the hotel, this could be covered if all other conditions are met.

The 24-hour coverage applies around the clock and is valid on trips of up to 30 days. If you take a trip longer than this, coverage will end 1 minute after midnight on the 31st day, though it would come back into effect when you are in transportation to the airport for your flight home. If you drive yourself to the airport, coverage should resume once you are inside the airport .

LGA AA economy check in

This benefit reimburses you for the money you lose when a trip paid for (in whole or part) with your card is interrupted or canceled. Trip interruption is when you’ve started the trip and must end it early for a covered reason; trip cancellation applies to canceling a trip before it begins. The maximum benefit payout here is $10,000 per person and up to $20,000 per trip. Both the cardholder and immediate family members are covered.

Trip cancellation coverage begins when you make your first deposit toward the trip and ends when you depart on your scheduled departure date. Trip interruption starts on your scheduled departure date and ends on your scheduled return date. However, if these dates or times are adjusted for reasons beyond your or the carrier’s control, the benefit will adjust automatically .

What expenses are reimbursable? They include nonrefundable, prepaid travel expenses by a licensed supplier, such as a travel agency, hotel, shore excursion agency, etc. When canceling for a covered reason, you’re also covered for redeposit fees to get your airline miles back. Unfortunately, this benefit doesn’t cover lost money you paid for tickets to shows or theme parks, tee times at golf courses, museums, or other entrance fees unless they’re part of a tour package.

You’ll be covered for a few more situations with trip interruption coverage only . These include fees for returning a rental car early or to the nearest facility and up to $250 of expenses to transport you for necessary medical treatment. However, that doesn’t include medical transport (such as ambulances or medevac).

What if you paid with Chase Ultimate Rewards points and are due a refund under these benefits? You’ll be reimbursed according to the value on your travel supplier’s confirmation receipt, assuming that’s listed. If there’s no trip value listed on the receipt after you paid with points, you’ll be reimbursed at a value of 1 cent per point.

Covered Reasons

Not every reason for canceling a trip or ending it early is covered under these benefits. Covered reasons include accidental death or injury, a sickness requiring hospitalization, severe weather, a named storm warning, a change in military orders, a subpoena or call to jury duty, your home being burglarized or becoming uninhabitable, your hotel becoming uninhabitable, a public transportation strike that makes you miss 20% of a trip or a scheduled tour departure, and more. Consult the Chase Sapphire Preferred card benefits guide to see if your specific cancellation or interruption reason is covered.

Trip cancellation insurance doesn’t cover everything. For example, changing your mind about a trip is not covered. If your plans are subject to change, you may want to purchase Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

This part is a bit confusing, but yes. Chase’s benefits guide for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card states explicitly that cruise lines aren’t included in the definition of a “common carrier.” However, cruise lines are included in the definition of a “travel supplier.”

Why does this matter? Many of the trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits only apply to travel with a common carrier, which doesn’t include cruise lines. However, some benefits do apply to cruises . These include stolen luggage benefits or even canceling a trip if delays mean you’ll miss at least 20% of the trip or that you’ll miss the departure of your cruise ship.

The travel accident and injury benefits also apply while you’re cruising, but it’s worth noting that returning late to your cruise ship, only to find it’s left for the next island without you, isn’t a covered expense. You’ll be on your own for the costs of catching up to your ship.

There are 2 types of baggage protection here: coverage for delayed bags and coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. Baggage delay insurance covers up to $100 per day for up to 5 days when your bags are delayed by at least 6 hours, covering each additional 24 hours past that until the maximum of 5 days is reached. This benefit applies to you and your immediate family members when you pay for at least part of your trip with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You don’t need to be traveling with your immediate family members for them to be covered , as long as at least part of their trip was paid for with your card, which can be a nice perk if you book travel for relatives.

Coverage begins on the scheduled departure date and ends on the scheduled return date, though coverage adjusts automatically if there are changes outside your or the travel provider’s control. There’s also a list of non-covered items, such as medical devices, losses due to war/conflict, electronics, and cash equivalents. In case of baggage delay, you must report it to the travel provid er as soon as possible and keep receipts for necessary expenses you incur ; you’ll submit these for reimbursement afterward.

Lost luggage reimbursement is different; it covers lost, stolen, or damaged luggage during your trip. Both checked and carry-on bags are covered up to a maximum of $3,000 per person per trip. However, there’s a limit of $500 for jewelry, watches, and electronics.

There are some specifics to understand about this coverage, however. First, it doesn’t cover items you leave behind by accident . Second, coverage applies to you and immediate family members (even if you aren’t traveling with them) so long as you paid for at least part of the trip with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Coverage is available from the scheduled start to the scheduled end of your trip, but it is automatically adjusted if there are uncontrollable delays to either date.

Coverage applies to common carriers and cruise lines, and you must report the loss, theft, or damage within the timeframe specified by your travel provider. Then, the coverage on your Chase Sapphire Preferred card will cover any difference in the value of your monetary loss (after depreciation of the items) and the payment you receive from the travel provider . Thus, this is secondary coverage. It’s worth noting that documents, furs, tickets, and cash-like items aren’t covered.

Accidents can happen on any trip, from accidentally slipping on the wet deck of a cruise ship to spending nights in a hospital at a far-flung destination. Does your health insurance at home cover you when you head to Florida? What about South America? These are questions worth asking. If your medical coverage won’t be in effect, it’s worth considering medical travel insurance .

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card includes travel accident insurance for you and your immediate family members . It’s in effect if you pay at least part of the airfare for your trip with this card. You’ll receive varying maximum payouts depending on the type of injury (or death) encountered during your trip, and the maximum limit also depends on whether the accident occurs while traveling on a common carrier or at some other point during your trip . The 24-hour benefit provides maximum coverage of $100,000, increasing to $500,000 when traveling on a common carrier.

But how does this work in practice?

If more than 1 person is injured , the benefits administrator will pay no more than 2 times the maximum limit for each type of injury. That sum will be divided among all covered persons eligible for benefits payments.

In case of death , the benefits administrator will give the money to your named beneficiary. If you haven’t named a beneficiary, the order of preference goes from a spouse or domestic partner to children, then parents, siblings, and finally, your estate. If you go missing and haven’t been found after a year, then this will trigger the “loss of life” benefit.

Coverage begins either when you reach the airport, station, or terminal for travel on a common carrier or when you enter courtesy transportation provided to take you to the point at which your trip begins, such as a train station or airport. If you didn’t buy your tickets in advance but are purchasing them when you arrive at the station, coverage begins once you make the payment for travel. Coverage ends after you leave the transportation vessel or exit the courtesy transportation provided afterward.

The 24-hour coverage functions a bit differently. It’s in effect around the clock for up to 30 days, starting from your scheduled departure for air travel. If your trip is longer than 30 days, coverage will pause 1 minute after midnight on the 31st day and resume when you reach the airport for a flight home or are in courtesy transportation to the airport for the flight home.

Obviously, there are exclusions. You aren’t covered if you’re a pilot or crew member on a flight, you get injured while committing a crime, you get injured while skydiving, your injury is self-inflicted, or you’re injured in a war.

Lastly, you may wonder how COVID-19 factors in . The benefits guide says this under covered losses: “Quarantine of you or your traveling companion imposed by a physician or a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons.”

Thus, your illness could be covered if a doctor or government requires quarantine related to COVID-19. COVID-19 is generally covered under most travel insurance policies in the same way sicknesses are covered. However, not traveling to avoid COVID-19 risks isn’t covered. As the benefits guide says, “Your disinclination to travel, a country closing its borders, or a travel supplier canceling or changing travel arrangements due to an epidemic or pandemic.”

Hotels aren’t treated separately under the Chase Sapphire Preferred card travel insurance terms. If you must cancel or interrupt a trip for a covered reason, then your hotel cancellation fees can be covered. This would include situations like forfeiting a first night’s room cost for canceling your hotel booking at the last minute, assuming you couldn’t arrive for a covered reason, such as a travel delay or a last-minute injury that made you unable to travel.

Hyatt Regency Nairobi king bed deluxe entry

While you won’t find the word “Airbnb” or even “vacation home” in the benefits guide, you will find a description that covers these types of rentals :

“Provider of Lodging – a hotel, inn, motel, bed and breakfast, or hostel; a Provider of Lodging includes non–commercial time shares, condominiums, or rentals of a private residence; such rental shall require a written contract between You and the property owner or management company, executed in advance of the commencement of the rental period …” Chase Sapphire Preferred card benefits guide.

So long as you’ve reserved your rental in advance and have a written contract — which Airbnb provides at the time of booking, courtesy of your confirmation details — your vacation home rental should count as a type of lodging. The contract must state the cancellation provisions, must not include a rental of more than 60 days, and your booking must be made directly with a licensed website or agent — not with the homeowner directly (unless that person is a licensed agent).

Airbnb is a covered lodging type, meaning your booking should qualify for trip interruption, trip cancellation, and trip delay coverage .

In short, yes. However, there are some exclusions. Since your personal auto insurance policy may not cover you abroad, it’s great to know that paying with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card and declining the rental company’s collision damage waiver can provide protection on your next rental .

You can be covered up to the actual cash value of most rental cars against theft or collision damage. Coverage can include administrative fees, loss-of-use charges, and even towing charges. Coverage applies to rentals up to 31 days and covers you plus any additional drivers listed on the rental contract .

You’ll need to use your card (or your points) to pay for the entire cost of the rental , and most vehicle types are covered by this primary insurance. However, coverage doesn’t apply to exotic or antique cars, high-value vehicles, cargo vehicles, motorcycles, RVs, or vans with seating for more than 9 people (including the driver). Note that Teslas qualify as high-value vehicles, so these aren’t covered .

The benefits guide doesn’t spell out any specific excluded countries . However, Visa typically excludes coverage in Israel, Jamaica, and Northern Ireland, plus you may not be able to use your card to pay for a rental (and thus coverage won’t be in effect) with U.S. Treasury Department monetary embargoes . These destinations include places where your credit cards won’t work, such as Cuba, Sudan, Syria, and North Korea.

Unfortunately, no. Because Turo and Zipcar rentals aren’t considered rentals from a rental car agency, most credit card rental car insurance doesn’t cover them .

To file a claim, you should first gather all of the documents related to your claim . These can include receipts, accident reports, police reports, photos, hospital records, or anything else pertinent to the type of claim you’re making.

Next, you can call the benefits administrator at 866-390-9735 or visit eclaimsline.com to submit online . Different claims have different required timelines. For example, auto claims must be filed within 100 days of the incident. However, you need to file within 90 days for baggage delays or losses, but you’re supposed to contact the benefits administrator within 20 days of these incidents to at least provide notice, even though you have 90 days to finish submitting the claim.

This question will be subjective, and different people will arrive at different conclusions. Travel insurance can be useful for the unexpected, but no 2 trips are equal. The best way to decide whether you need additional insurance beyond what the Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers is to look at what it doesn’t cover.

Will you be skydiving? Do you have significant trip expenses related to Turo rentals or short connections that could cause domino effects if you miss a departure time? Are you renting an RV or going camping — types of travel not covered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred card?

If you have prepaid, nonrefundable expenses that wouldn’t be reimbursed by your credit card’s travel insurance in the event of delays or cancellations, getting a travel insurance policy that covers these could be a good idea and could provide peace of mind. That said, not every travel activity is covered by every travel insurance policy, so you want to make sure you choose a policy that covers your expenses for your particular trip .

If you look at your trip and decide that your flights, hotel plans, and simple plan of just relaxing at the beach will be covered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, then purchasing an extra policy probably isn’t necessary.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card offers numerous protections for purchases and trips. Insurance terms can feel confusing, but hopefully, the explanations of these policies should clarify what is and isn’t covered, as well as policy limits, in a way that helps you know whether the coverages are sufficient for your upcoming travels.

High annual fee

Requires excellent credit

For avid travelers, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a good deal — even with its $550 annual fee.

Thanks to features such as an annual $300 travel credit, as well as bonus rewards that can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to several loyalty programs, it stands out as one of the best premium travel cards available.

However, to earn the card’s highest rewards rate, you’ll have to make travel purchases through the Chase portal, which can be limiting. And while the card offers excellent overall value for those who spend heavily on travel and dining, if you can't take advantage of its more niche benefits, a different travel card could be a better fit.

How much is a point worth?

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points earned on this card are worth 1.5 cents each when redeemed for travel booked through Chase. Cardholders can also get more value per point by transferring them to Chase's airline and hotel partners.

Otherwise, points are worth less when redeemed for cash back, gift cards and merchandise.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Big sign-up bonus

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® features the following generous sign-up bonus: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

To find out whether you pre-qualify for this card, check out NerdWallet’s pre-qualification tool.

Bonus rewards

Holders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® can earn the following:

10 points per dollar spent on hotel stays and car rentals booked through Chase.

5 points per dollar spent on air travel purchased booked through Chase.

Travel and dining-related purchases made through the Chase portal will get you the highest rewards rates, which are lucrative for those who spend heavily in those categories.

And even for travel and dining purchases not made through the issuer, cardholders will still earn bonus rewards.

Plus, if you redeem those points through Chase for travel, they are worth an elevated 1.5 cents, which gives the card an impressive 4.5% effective rewards rate in those popular categories. That's a boon for folks who spend plenty in these areas — in the U.S. and worldwide as well.

Additionally, through March 2025, you can earn a total of 10 points per $1 spent on Lyft (7 points per dollar on Lyft plus 3 points per dollar on travel). That’s one of the highest earn rates you’ll find for ridesharing purchases on any credit card.

Travel statement credit of up to $300

While many premium cards offer airline fee credits for baggage fees and other select purchases, the travel credit of up to $300 on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® covers a much broader range of travel purchases , including taxi rides, campground fees and train fares.

Because this credit is applied automatically, taking advantage of it is effortless. Use this card to pay for a $20 Uber ride and — poof! — that travel credit is applied to your credit card statement right away.

Airport lounge access and Global Entry/TSA PreCheck/NEXUS reimbursement

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , your next layover could be spent in an exclusive lounge with a complimentary cocktail in hand. The card comes with Priority Pass Select membership, with access to over 1,000 airport lounges internationally and meal credits at select airport restaurants and bars. Plus, you'll get access to Chase's own Sapphire Lounges . As of February 2024, there are Sapphire lounge locations in Boston, New York (LaGuardia and JFK) and Hong Kong, plus a Sapphire Terrace location in Austin.

With the card's TSA PreCheck, Global Entry or NEXUS reimbursement, you can also speed through security and get to those swanky lounges a little sooner. The card offers reimbursement for the application fee for TSA PreCheck ($78) or Global Entry ($100) or NEXUS ($50) once every four years.

» MORE: The guide to Chase Lounges

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you can move points to several other loyalty programs at a 1:1 ratio. Transferring points and redeeming them strategically can be incredibly lucrative. NerdWallet values the points earned on this card at more than 1.5 cents per point when transferred to some partners.

Here are Chase’s transfer partners:

Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).

Air Canada (1:1 ratio).

Air France-KLM (1:1 ratio).

British Airways (1:1 ratio).

Emirates (1:1 ratio).

Iberia (1:1 ratio).

JetBlue (1:1 ratio).

Singapore (1:1 ratio).

Southwest (1:1 ratio).

United (1:1 ratio).

Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Hyatt (1:1 ratio).

InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).

Marriott (1:1 ratio).

Complementary cards

Like a handful of other Chase cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® earns Ultimate Rewards® points. That means if you already have another card in the Ultimate Rewards® family, you can generally transfer points to your Chase Sapphire Reserve® , potentially allowing you to get more value on the points earned.

Say you already have the Chase Freedom Unlimited® , which earns a minimum of 1.5% cash back on purchases, but lacks 1:1 transfer partners and bonuses when redeeming for travel through Chase. When you log on to your Chase account, you have the option of moving the rewards earned on that card to your Chase Sapphire Reserve® , where you can then transfer them to partners or book travel for 1.5 cents per point. That could effectively boost your rewards rate on the Chase Freedom Unlimited® to 2.25% or more.

» MORE: How the Chase Sapphire Reserve® fits into the 'Chase trifecta'

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® and its lower-priced sibling, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , have had their rewards, perks and bonuses tweaked over the years as the issuer has worked to keep them at the top of travelers' wallets. See our Chase Sapphire cards news page for a rundown.

Sapphire Reserve vs. Sapphire Preferred

If you're looking at the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you might also have your eye on its lower-cost sibling, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . That card has an annual fee of $95 , but it lacks the same rich benefits.

Which card is the better deal for you depends on your spending. For frequent travelers, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers far more long-term value. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a better choice for those who don’t plan on using so many perks but still want a large sign-up bonus and elevated point values.

For a more thorough breakdown of the differences, read NerdWallet's full comparison of these two cards. Here's how they stack up at a glance:

Restricting rewards

Although the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers competitive earn rates for dining and travel spending, you’ll be able to get the highest rewards rate only if you make purchases through the Chase portal. This can significantly limit your options.

For example, restaurants available to you through the Chase Dining portal will depend on your location. This means that cardholders based in larger cities like New York, for instance, will have more options available to them than those based in smaller areas.

Similarly, to earn the card's 10x and 5x rate for travel-related spending, you’ll have to book through the Chase portal, which can prove limiting compared with buying flights or renting cars directly, for example.

Moreover, if you're not an avid spender in either of the card’s bonus categories, travel and dining, you won’t get much use out of the card. A cash-back credit card that offers more diverse and flexible rewards options would be a better fit.

Somewhat limited lounge choice

If your go-to airport doesn’t have a Chase Sapphire Lounge or Priority Pass lounge, you'll be missing out on a key benefit of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® . Capital One offers a similar alternative with the $395 -annual-fee Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . Cardholders also have access to Priority Pass lounges, plus Plaza Premium Lounges and Capital One Lounges at Dulles International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Denver International Airport.

But if lounge access is a priority for you, a better option might be The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Though The Platinum Card® from American Express has a higher annual fee ( $695 ), this card comes with much broader airport lounge coverage, along with plenty of other top-tier benefits. In addition to giving cardholders Priority Pass Select coverage (once you enroll), the card also offers access to several other lounge networks, including AmEx's own Centurion lounges and Delta Sky Clubs (for folks flying with Delta on the same day). Keep in mind, however, that the Priority Pass Select coverage on this card no longer includes credits to select airport restaurants, unlike the Chase Sapphire Reserve® . The card also offers several other premium benefits and statement credits, including up to $200 in Uber Cash, which can be used toward free Uber rides in the U.S. (up to $15 each month, plus a bonus $20 in December). Plus, it comes with a big welcome offer. Terms Apply.

» MORE: Credit cards with airport lounge access

If the $550 fee on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is too rich for your blood — even with all of its big perks — look to the less-expensive Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card instead.

As mentioned earlier, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has an annual fee of $95 . It has the same 1:1 transfer partners as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and a similarly robust sign-up bonus: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠. Although it lacks the most attention-grabbing perks, such as the $300 travel credit, it's ideal for folks looking for a versatile travel card with a lower price. Check out NerdWallet's best credit card deals to see how these cards stack up.

» MORE: NerdWallet's best no-annual-fee travel credit cards

Spending $550 a year on a credit card is a big deal — and probably isn’t worth it in this case if you’re not a frequent traveler. But if you fly often and can take advantage of the card's many perks, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is worth every penny.

To view rates and fees of The Platinum Card® from American Express , see this page .

alt

No appetite for actively managing your credit card travel rewards? This card gives you a flat 2 miles per dollar spent on most purchases. Redeem miles to "erase" any travel purchase at a penny per mile. There's a great sign-up bonus, and the annual fee is $95 .

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Learn how NerdWallet rates credit cards.

Frequently asked questions

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® 10 earns points per dollar spent on Chase Dining purchases through Ultimate Rewards®, 10 points per dollar spent on hotel stays and car rentals purchased through Ultimate Rewards®, 5 points per dollar spent on air travel purchased through Ultimate Rewards®; 3 points per dollar on dining and travel not booked through Chase and 1 point per dollar everywhere else. But rewards alone aren't enough to justify the hefty $550 annual fee. The card comes with an array of travel perks that can significantly reduce the cost of carrying it.

For its higher fee ( $550 , versus $95 for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ), the Chase Sapphire Reserve® earns richer bonus rewards, provides more perks and protections (travel credits, airport lounge access and more) and gives you a higher point value when you redeem for travel (1.5 cents apiece versus 1.25 cents). Both cards offer the option of transferring points to about a dozen airline and hotel loyalty programs.

If you’ll use the travel perks — like the $300 annual travel credit and lounge access — and maximize the way you earn and redeem points, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® can be a good value . If you don’t travel much, you're better off with a different card.

You’ll need excellent credit to qualify for this card. That generally means a score of 720 or better, but credit scores alone do not guarantee approval. Your income and other factors will also be considered.

When you pay for your rental car with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you’ll get primary collision damage and theft protection up to $75,000. The card also offers trip delay/cancellation insurance, lost luggage reimbursement and emergency medical evacuation.

You can transfer Ultimate Rewards® points earned on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® to 13 travel partners , including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, Marriott, Hyatt and IHG.

The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a no annual fee card with several features that can help you pay less interest, but doesn't earn rewards.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). While you'll want a plan to pay off your balance transfer before the interest kicks in, this feature can help you lower your APR compared to what you might pay with other credit cards.

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
