Australia – with its wallpaper-worthy landscapes, vibrant cities, and unique wildlife – is a dream destination for many.

Unfortunately, while Australia  is known to be laid-back, it is not known as a budget destination. Even locals find the cost of living a hard pill to swallow. Ultimately, how expensive Australia feels will depend on the exchange rate of the Australian dollar with your home currency.

Whether you’re in Sydney , Perth  or an outback location in between, food, activities and especially accommodation can add up quickly. However with careful planning it is possible to keep costs reasonable on a trip to Australia. Here are our top money-saving tips along with a guide to daily costs.

A guide to daily costs

  • Shared bunk room in a hostel: $40–80
  • Basic room for two: $180–250
  • Single fare on public transport: $2–4
  • Bacon and egg roll for breakfast: $8–12
  • Meat pie: $6
  • Dinner per person, excluding drinks: $30–60
  • Beer in pub: $5–9,
  • Cocktails: $15–25

Total average daily cost: $200 – 300

1. Plan your trip during the off-peak season

Australia's peak tourist season  falls during the southern hemisphere's summer. This makes December to February the most expensive time to visit Australia.

Instead, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May), when you're more likely to score a deal on accommodation, domestic flights and even tours. As most accommodation providers – particularly in urban centers – rely on dynamic pricing, these months are when you’ll be more likely to snag a room for a reasonable price. The same is true of seats on internal flights and tour buses.

It’s also a great opportunity to discover offbeat festivals timed to coincide with the seasons, such as Tasmania ’s winter solstice celebration, Dark Mofo, or cherry-picking in Victoria’s Yarra Valley .

2. Sydney is not always the cheapest city to fly into

Sydney is considered the gateway to Australia, but it’s not the country’s only international airport. You might be able to save a chunk of change if you fly directly into Melbourne , Brisbane or Perth instead.

You'll find that domestic airfares within Australia are surprisingly budget-friendly, although their high environmental cost bears careful consideration. One-way flights between Melbourne and Sydney retail for as little as $59. You can expect a slightly higher level of service and more inclusions when flying with Australia’s budget airlines (including Bonza and Jetstar ) than you may have experienced with low-cost carriers in other regions.

Another money-saving option is to consider a flight package. Qantas , Australia's largest airline, often has travel deals that include airfare, hotels and car hire . You can use its  multi-city trip planner to budget domestic travel within Australia.

3. The cheapest places to eat are markets and pubs

Australia's big cities have top-notch restaurants , but they can be pricey and are likely to be a stretch too far for budget travelers. Instead, opt for the lively markets in laneways, parks, and historic sites. Savor street food, like Thai and Greek delights, at Melbourne's Queen Victoria Market or explore Sydney's Chinatown night markets on Fridays, with dishes starting at just $5.

If you're in regional areas, weekends are a treat with farmers' markets offering everything from freshly baked pastries and picnic supplies to souvenirs to take home.

For more wallet-friendly dining, keep an eye out for food trucks – they're everywhere. In Darwin , Parap Village Markets serves up some of the best laksa (Malaysian noodle soup) in Australia, while Sydney and Brisbane have a variety of options from Texas BBQ to Filipino fare.

And if you're in the mood for a classic Aussie meal, check out the local pubs. Most will offer a daily special, like a $12 chicken parmigiana or a $10 burger with chips. Finally, before you balk at prices for mains, remember that they include tax and tipping isn't customary; what you see on the menu is what you'll pay.

4. Australia's best attractions are free

In Australia, the real treasures lie outdoors on captivating beaches, coastal walks, and mountain trails. There are over 600 national parks and while a handful charge an entrance fee, most are free to explore.

There are also hundreds of cost-free museums and attractions across the country, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Gallery of Victoria . Some may request donations or provide free entry only during specific hours, typically outlined on their websites.

Another option is to join a free walking tour that delves into local history and iconic landmarks. In Brisbane, volunteers spend two to three hours guiding visitors through the city; the Sydney Sights tour leads you around neighborhoods and to famous places, like the Opera House ; and in Melbourne, a Culture Capital tour takes you deep into the city’s labyrinth of laneways and arcades. While these tours may advertise themselves as "free," they often run on a tips basis or "pay what you think it's worth", so bear in mind that the guides are usually expecting a financial contribution.

If you’re having trouble finding a tour online, ask at an information center or chat with the booking desk or concierge where you're staying. Just remember to book your spot for these tours in advance.

For popular tourist attractions, consider investing in a multi-attraction combo pass. Sightseeing Pass Australia , for example, offers discounts for attractions in South Australia and Western Australia, while Sea Life Sydney ’s Pass will save you up to 50% on other nearby sights. Alternatively, scout for discounts on platforms like Klook , Red Balloon  and Adrenaline to make the most of your sightseeing adventures.

5. Hire an RV or campervan for cheap accommodation and travel

Whether it's a road trip through the outback or along the coast , the best and sometimes only way to see Australia is by car. To explore efficiently, consider hiring a camper instead of a traditional car rental. Campervans provide affordable accommodation on wheels, with nightly fees at caravan parks averaging around $30 for unpowered sites, and upwards of $40 for powered spots (although you may find even better deals on private land through Hipcamp ).

There are also free campsites available throughout the country, offering an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience. These can be found using apps such as WikiCamps Australia and CamperMate . If you go this route, prepare for minimal amenities; some spots lack toilet facilities or access to clean water.

Van rental costs start at approximately $40 per day, depending on the model. Camplify (which is like Airbnb for motorhomes and vans) has an under $100  section, making it easy to pick your next home on wheels within budget. Jucy Rentals is another option, best suited to road trippers on a backpacker budget.

While you’ll save on accommodation, bear in mind that petrol (gas) is expensive in Australia. Prices fluctuate, but at the end of 2023 a liter of fuel was between $1.80 and $2.10.

6. Consider a farm stay for a different perspective

Australia is witnessing a rise in the popularity of rural farm stays among travelers. Whether visiting a region for a month or a weekend, you can book a tiny house on a cattle station or sleep in a chic converted shearing shed. They can sometimes be cheaper than hotels, with a breakfast typically included. Most importantly, they double as a free attraction for the whole family, as many farm stays encourage guests to pet the horses and feed the cows.

To find them, use Hipcamp or Booking.com 's "farm stay" filter. While some farm stays can be upwards of $600 for a luxe glamping experience, some cost less than $250 per night for an entire cottage to yourself. Many tourist-facing farmstays, such as the Tweed's Hosanna Farmstay , double as campgrounds with sites from $21 a night and huts from $125.

7. Work or volunteer while you travel

A working holiday visa in Australia can be a savvy move to explore Australia's culture and breathtaking scenery while padding your wallet. Available for visitors between the ages of 18 and 30 (and up to 35 in some cases) from eligible countries, these visas allow you to work as a tourist in Australia.

Housesitting is another option for travelers. You get to stay for free in great homes across Australia, in exchange for looking after the house, and possibly pets too, while the owners are away. Aussie House Sitters and Mindahome.com both list available house sits; there is a small membership fee to join, but it’ll pay off in accommodation savings if you land a housesitting gig.

8. Bring your own wine to dinner

Australia has steep taxes on alcohol, resulting in high prices. Expect to pay $13 for a glass of house wine. To lessen the blow on your budget, opt for happy hour drinks when cocktails are just $15 and tap beers will start at $5. Many places also offer food deals like $10 nachos and $5 fries.

For a budget-friendly dinner with drinks, some restaurants – particularly Chinese, Italian, and Mediterranean ones – will allow you to bring your own bottle of wine. This will typically be advertised in the restaurant’s front window, with a nominal corkage fee of around $3. Although if you walk in with a “goon” bag (a four-liter bag of wine, which will set you back about $12) you might turn some heads.

9. Join a group tour

A common oversight among travelers is underestimating Australia's vast size. With a population of just 25 million, its landmass rivals that of the United States. Travel times – particularly to remote regions – aren’t just critical to your itinerary; they’ll also affect your bottom line.

This is when group tours – which cover lodging, food, transportation, and experiences – can be particularly good value, especially for destinations such as Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and K’gari (Fraser Island) . Tour operators are typically able to negotiate lower group rates for their guests, saving you not just time and effort in planning, but money as well.

Traveling to Australia is a pricey proposition—the airfare alone could bust your budget, and the sheer length of the flight encourages most visitors to stretch their visit for well over a week (it’ll take you that long just to get over the jet lag ). So is it really possible to travel Australia for cheap?

It may not be as difficult as you think. Below are 25 ways to help you save money on every aspect of your trip to Australia, including info on cheap eats, discount cards, fun freebies, and more.

How to Get to Australia for Cheap

1. Do your homework. One of the biggest expenses of any Australia trip is the airfare to get there. As you hunt for bargains, be sure to check a variety of flight search sites for comparison shopping purposes, and consider signing up for fare alerts from Airfarewatchdog , SmarterTravel’s sister site, to get notified when prices drop.

2. Time your visit. Airfare is typically most expensive between December and February, which is summer in Australia and the most popular time to visit places like Sydney and Melbourne. You’ll likely find lower fares during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) or during the winter off-season.

3. Consider a flight package. Qantas offers Explorer fares that include round-trip airfare to Australia as well as several domestic flights within the country. Prices are based on season and how far you plan to fly within Australia.

10 Ways to Survive a Long-Haul Flight

Australia Trip Planning

4. Keep your focus. Australia is enormous—nearly the size of the continental U.S. You wouldn’t try to see the entire U.S. in two weeks, so don’t attempt to do it in Australia either. If you have limited time for your trip, fix your sights on one or two regions and explore them thoroughly—you’ll have a more relaxing experience, and save both time and money on transportation.

5. Consider a cruise. If you’re looking to see a variety of destinations without having to unpack more than once, a cruise is a cost-efficient and convenient option. There are Australia cruises that cost less than $100 per person, per night; these rates include accommodations, meals, entertainment, and transportation from each port to the next. Royal Caribbean , Princess , and Holland America are just a few of the lines you could consider. See the best sites to book a cruise for comparison shopping.

6. Look for freebies. Australia has a wealth of museums and attractions that don’t charge admission fees—like the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens .

7. Buy a discount card. You can purchase an iVenture Card for popular tourist destinations like Sydney , Melbourne , and Tasmania . The cards include free entry to many area attractions, as well as special offers and discounts, for a single price. These cards may save you money if you’re doing a lot of sightseeing in a short period of time.

Money Management in Australia

8. Lock in your rate. International exchange rates are constantly fluctuating, and they’re not always in your favor. The best way to control costs and stick to your budget is to prepay for your hotels, airfare, and tour packages in advance—preferably in your own currency—so that last-minute fluctuations don’t send your budget ballooning.

9. Skip the exchange counter. You’ll get the best exchange rates by using your credit card or withdrawing money from an ATM; that’s because you’ll be exchanging money at interbank rates, which tend to be better than the rates exchange bureaus charge. ATMs can be found just about everywhere in Australia except the most remote towns and villages, and credit cards are accepted at many stores and restaurants. But beware of fees—many banks will charge you to withdraw money at a foreign ATM or make a purchase in a foreign currency. One exception is Capital One, which doesn’t charge its American cardholders a fee for foreign purchases. For more information, see The Best Way to Carry Money Overseas .

10. Negotiate a better deal. Haggling is always in style at Australia’s open-air markets—you can negotiate great deals at places like Paddington Markets , the Rocks Markets , and the Bondi Markets , all in Sydney.

11. Get a refund. If you purchase $300 AUD or more in goods from a single retailer, you are eligible for a refund of the goods and services tax (GST) that you paid on those items. You must get an original tax invoice from the store where you made the purchase and present it when you depart Australia. For more information, click here .

How to Save on Australia Transportation

12. Check the discount airlines. Thanks to Australia’s sheer size, the quickest way to get around the country is by air. Australia has a number of discount airlines that provide affordably priced domestic flights, including Jetstar , Regional Express (REX) , and Tigerair . (Be sure to check which baggage fees and other charges might apply on these airlines, as they could cancel out any fare savings.)

13. Take the bus. If you’ve got time to spare or if you’re focusing your travels on a relatively small region, hopping on a bus to your next city may be your cheapest option. Greyhound Australia offers a variety of specials, including discounts for seniors, kids, and students. For extended travel, consider a bus pass .

14. Get a free campervan rental. Traveling by campervan is one of the most popular ways to see the country, but one-way rentals can be expensive if you’re traveling from one part of Australia to another. Use Transfercar to find vehicles that need to be relocated, and you can often drive one for free.

15. Use public transit for free. A number of Australian cities have made select public transportation routes free to the public. For example, Brisbane has free service on several bus routes in the city center, while Perth offers free transit on buses and trains within a certain city zone. Melbourne also has a free tram zone .

16. Travel at a discount. If you’ll be spending time in Australian cities, keep an eye out for public transportation discount cards such as Sydney’s Opal card , which offers discounts and a cap on your maximum daily and fares, no matter how many times you use the transit system. These passes can save you money over individually priced tickets.

17. Think outside the tour. Why pay for a pricey sightseeing cruise around Sydney’s harbor when you could enjoy the same scenic views from a Sydney public ferry for about a third of the price?

How to Save on Meals in Australia

18. Go grocery shopping. Buy your food where the locals do: at supermarkets. Instead of paying for your hotel’s pricey breakfast, pick up a loaf of fresh bread at the local market and keep it in your room for a morning meal. Add some meat and cheese and you’ve got yourself a picnic lunch.

19. Don’t overtip. Tipping is generally not required in Australia, though it’s growing more common in restaurants. If you’re pleased with your waiter or waitress, a 10 percent tip will be appreciated. Tipping is not necessary at bars, though you can round your bill up if you’d like.

20. Find cheap eats. Skip the touristy restaurants and follow the locals to places where you can find great food at a great value. Think ethnic restaurants—Thai food is cheap, plentiful, and popular in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, as is takeaway sushi. Department store food halls are also a good bet for quick, inexpensive meals. In smaller towns along the coast, look for little joints offering the ubiquitous fish and chips.

21. Consider a home- or farmstay. Staying in a family home or on a working farm offers a wonderful way to interact with locals and get a genuine feel for what it’s like to live Down Under. Find farmstays on sites such as FarmStayPlanet and Downunder Farmstays . You can find rooms in people’s homes on Airbnb or Homestay.com .

22. Consider a vacation rental. Particularly if you’re traveling with a family or group, a vacation rental could save you money over a hotel stay by giving you more space for less money, and by offering a kitchen where you can cook your own meals instead of eating out. Find one on these vacation rental sites .

23. Look into hostels. Contrary to popular belief, hostels aren’t just for 21-year-old backpackers. Many Australian hostels offer private rooms and even private bathrooms—so if you don’t mind basic accommodations, they can be a cheap and comfortable alternative to fancier hotel rooms. See Hostelworld.com .

24. Swap your home. A home exchange is perhaps the cheapest way to stay in Australia—you stay in an Australian’s house for free while he or she stays in yours. Often you’ll have use of your exchange partner’s car during your stay, which will save you money on transportation. Read more in SmarterTravel’s article on home exchange .

25. Go camping. Australia has some of the world’s most scenic and well-maintained campgrounds and caravan parks. Renting an RV gives you the freedom to drive yourself around the country, as well as a cozy and inexpensive place to sleep each night. Find campsites at AustralianCampsites.com.au .

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Australia

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Australia flight deals.
  • When flying to Australia, disabled passengers should consider using the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) - Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) flight route. Travelers with disabilities, mobility issues, and special needs can receive airport special assistance based on their requests, like baggage assistance, medical and safety assistance, and specially equipped wheelchairs at LAX Airport.
  • Airport lounges are typically thought of as one of the best places to unwind for passengers as they wait for their flights. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is the airport of choice for most economic travelers who wish to relax at an affordable lounge before boarding their flights from the US to Australia. Before takeoff, budget travelers can simply and affordably unwind in the Delta Sky Club.
  • Parents who want to take their children on vacation to Australia from the US can think about taking a flight on Virgin Australia from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD). This airline offers nonstop service between the airports of LAX and SYD. By using direct flights, you can travel from the US to Australia in the shortest amount of time feasible, lowering the risk that your children will become exhausted before they arrive in Australia.
  • If your flight from the US is scheduled to land in Australia at night, think about the possibility of lodging in a closer hotel to SYD Airport. The Aerotel Hotel, located inside the international Terminal 1, is one of the best and nearest places to stay when visitors arrive in Sydney late at night.
  • Los Angeles Airport or Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) are two major airport options for those travelers who want to go from the USA to Australia as quickly as possible. These are the main US airports that serve as the bases for airlines that operate direct flights to SYD Airport in Australia.
  • The vast southern continent of Australia is served by a series of international airports that link its major regions with the outside world. Perth Airport (PER) and Port Hedland International Airport (PHE) are gateways to the plains of Western Australia, while Darwin International Airport (DRW) unlocks the region of the Northern Territory.
  • The more populous southern half of the continent is dominated by the cities of Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne in the east, all of which provide numerous flights from the US to Australia. Virgin Australia offers nonstop service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL), while Jetstar provides flights from Honolulu (HNL) to Sydney and Brisbane.
  • The eastern territory of Queensland provides the longest uninterrupted stretch of coastland in Australia, anchored by Brisbane Airport (BNE) and its city at the most southern point. Brisbane Airport is a good starting point to explore northern points along the Australian coast of the Coral Sea, or you can stay closer to home after your flight from the US to Australia and discover the legendary Gold Coast.
  • There are no major airports that service the interior of the Australian continent, so if you wish to visit, you’ll have to fly from Brisbane Airport into a regional airport like Mt. Isa Airport or Charleville Airport. Both provide access to the Western reaches of Queensland, into the heart of the province of the Northern Territory and the state of South Australia.
  • To explore the northern reaches of Australia, it will be necessary to get a flight from Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne into Darwin International Airport (DRW), which is the gateway to the area. From there, you can set your sights on Derby and Wyndham in Western Australia as well as the coastal areas of the Northern Territory and Queensland.

Top 5 airlines flying to Australia

All was good, the only thing was it didn't run on time.

Overall excellent but the Captain kept the seat belt sign on for far too long, especially at the beginning and end of the flight. It was 2 hours after take-off before the crew were able to start the service (on an 11 hour night flight, reducing our sleeping time) and the seat belt sign on went on during breakfast (90 mins before landing) and was not turned off again until we landed. This made for an uncomfortable journey of trying to limit fluid intake because it was unclear when the toilets would be available for use.

Good food and entertainment options. Great Staff that were all welcoming and caregiving.

The recline on the seat in front of me came back so that I was staring at the top of the man’s head in front of me the whole trip. He refused to bring his seat back up twice every time he was instructed to do so and only relented when he had a tray of good in front of him. And then right back in my lap!!! Horrible man!! I complained to the staff multiple times, but no one would address the issue. Otherwise, it would have been a perfect flight.

There was a snafu with confirming seats at check which left us in limbo for the second leg of our trip. I believe the ANZ app is not well integrated with the systems at the terminal resulting in this disconcerting error.

The pilot tried to make up for lost time due to delays that were out of her control. She communicated the issues openly and clearly and made every effort to do what she could to alleviate issues.

2 of the 6 economy toilets were out of order. Drinks were not offered often enough - you have to order on-screen, which is often unavailable. Snacks and Milo ran out very early. Crew was fine but I think there was a sticking issue

Flight attendants are always pleasant and helpful. Pilot kept us updated.

The only thing that was less than excellent was the food server at dinner. (I had the chicken.) It wasn't that it was poorly heated or in difficult-to-open containers; it was just that it had a very peculiar taste. And I use that to describe not just the main course but the dessert as well. Very odd flavours for what seemed to be a mainstream item. I did like that the airline offered us a free glass of wine. The breakfast omelette wasn't bad, although it was quite bland.

No refunds for flights that I could not take due to Covid restrictions

Fiji left without me because American Airlines was too stupid to get to LAX on time. Fiji should have offered a standby on another flight but they told me tough luck. I will never fly with this company again.

The A350 aircraft business class experience was very good. Comfortable and well appointed pod, and supplemental bed pad available for sleeping. Food was very good.

Business class seats and amenities were excellent, crew very attentive. Slept well. Food good, lounge experience nice. Would fly them again. A350 aircraft excellent, very quiet.

The flight attendants were extremely friendly and helpful. Everything ran on time. I highly recommend Fiji Airways.

The experience was lovely in every respect. The crews were delightful.

Very clean aircraft. Friendly staff. New plane. Food quality was good. Not my flavor but I saw the effort.

Fiji Business Class was value for money. Would do again for a long haul flight.

1.5Hrs to get from plane into terminal. Long wait. Flight to NZ 1 he late

Flight full. 'Volunteers' to check hand luggage. Checked hand luggage is lost

The part that really made for a poor trip was that we checked luggage, and it took 1.5 hrs. to get our luggage. This made it so we barely got to our next flight. We were the last ones on board.

Amazing! Was put on the earlier flight and I requested for an aisle seat and was given it. Thanks Qantas!

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

The crew were amazing - A great job. They made me feel special and valued.

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Qantas cancelled my flight for no good reason and rebooked me into a middle seat.

Boarding was terrible - the ground staff member Fredeya at lax was more military than customer service, have never encountered a customer service representative as rude as her. Apart from that all other staff were wonderful and the flight was good.

The flight met my expectations. It left and landed on time

My bag didn’t make it but otherwise it was a great experience.

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

Trip was smooth bumpy from the wind but no issues at all the crew attendant was very pleasant and had great customer service

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

The flight was delayed instead of leaving at 11 it left at 12.20

United WiFi is consistently unusable (it can take 10 mins to load a single web page). If you need Wifi to do work, be prepared to lose half a day of productivity.

We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight.

Good dinner and nice plane.Smootz flight. Breakfast had no sweet option. Seats hardly reclined.

It was upsetting that the flights were canceled but that was due to weather. I did not receive any vouchers for food or a hotel stay when I was forced to spend the night in Montreal. I was also upset when my seat was changed many times.. The plane seemed old with a non-functioning screen and loose side pockets.. All in all in need of updating. On the positive side, the staff in areas was friendly and helpful.

Lost my bag. My first ever flight with them that they forced me to gate check my bag on, due to them having a 30 year old plane with small carry on bins, and they lost my bag. Never again.

United force you to download their App to do the check-in.

The flight got canceled multiple times and we had to drive their to reach midnight for our next morning interview. Poor and unriable experience. Now have to ask for a refund since we didn't need their rescheduled flight three days later.

Short flight, crew members were very nice, so much so I'll take the return flight next weekend

The trip was fine and uneventful. The seat in business class was very uncomfortable which was disappointing given the extra cost. It was spacious but it felt like I was sitting on metal bars. The food in business class wasn't very good. The flight was ahead of time, the staff was professional and courteous and our luggage arrived safely.

Again we were late leaving Austin , there was no tv screen for the 3.5 hr flight, the pizza I bought was kinda bland

It was fine. The seating was tight. My husband is 6' 2", so we were glad to get seats with no one in front of him. I was glad that the plane wasn't packed so I could spread out.

I love flying with AC. I love that they have power outlet and free messaging wifi for aeroplan members.

Both flights to and from Phoenix were delayed 2 hours each direction. Unacceptable. Disappointed with Air Canada I was given a food voucher fror trip to Phoenix but nothing on return. Both baggage claims took 2 hours to collect baggage

My Overland Track hike with Intrepid Travel was excellent. The trip was run by Tasmanian Hikes and there was nothing at all I would give them anything less than an excellent rating. The equipment was top notch, the guides were superb, the food was amazing (and very unexpected) and the knowledge of the hike, flora and fauna and the area itself were second to none.

What people love about Budget Tours in Australia

The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great
Really good trip with value for your money. We saw a lot of Australia in such a short time, given how massive Australia really is. Our guide, Tamar, was an absolute sweetheart, knowledgeable, well travelled and very professional. This tour has the right balance of group activities and independent activities if you choose to do so. My only complaint is that some of the accommodations were subpar, which was disappointing given the high cost of this trip.

Traveling Australia on a Budget: Where to Start

Australia is an incredibly diverse country with so much to offer both domestic and international tourists alike. Whether you want to explore vibrant bustling cities, adventure through the outback, visit some of the jaw-dropping beaches around the country, or road trip from one exciting destination to the next, Australia never disappoints.

There are many holiday packages available across Australia with something on offer for everyone, no matter what your tastes or interests are. In fact, for many people, it’s not choosing where to go but more where to go first.

Australia on a Budget

While Australia is a spectacular holiday destination, it’s not a cheap country to travel in. For most people, this means keeping your budget in mind as you navigate your way around the country. However, while Australia can be expensive, with the right approach, it is certainly possible to travel on a budget, especially if you focus on some key areas.

Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean that you need to miss out on experiences, it just means taking a slightly different approach, being a little bit more independent, and being more prepared. In many cases, traveling on a budget can add to the overall experience as you will have a unique experience, be less sheltered during your travels and engage with your surroundings and the locals in a more meaningful way.

Let’s take a look at some useful tips to help you to get the most out of your Australian adventure even if you are traveling on a budget.

Table of Contents

Consider You Accommodation

Australia on a Budget 1

Accommodation is often one of the highest costs when you are traveling so this is typically the best place to start when it comes to reducing your overall costs.

Staying in hotels every night, even those that market themselves as “budget” can rack up over the duration of your trip. If you are traveling on a limited option, consider camping, staying in hostels, or crashing with friends. You can join online couch surfing communities where you can stay with locals for free.

Overcoming Food Costs

After accommodation, food is often the next biggest expense when you’re on holiday. While the idea of eating your breakfast lunch and dinner in nice restaurants might sound appealing, you will quickly need to rethink your budget if you go this route. Instead, opt to have picnics, cook food in the hostel or choose cheaper eateries to dine at.

If you want to stay healthy, avoid the cheap fast-food chains and instead load up on fresh fruit and veg at the local supermarket. If you’re on a longer trip, investing in a small gas burner will allow you to cook simple meals on the go, saving you more money in the long run.

Think About Drink

Many people associate holiday time with going out for a few drinks in the evening to unwind after a busy day of exploring. If you’re on a budget, however, you might need to consider skipping that glass of wine or beer every night. Going out to the pub for drinks regularly will rack up a lot over your holiday.

Instead, go to the bottle shop and take a few beers or a bottle of wine back to the hostel or your campsite where you can enjoy it with the rest of the budget-minded travelers you have met. Not only will you save yourself plenty of money but you might even find that you have a better time swapping stories and trading information about the best places to go and experiences to have.

Make Your Own Adventure

Australia on a Budget 2

Taking part in organized activities is always good fun, however, they do come at a cost. To keep more money in your wallet, why not plan your own activities and create your own adventures. With a good guidebook and the power of the internet, you can quickly find out what there is to do in the area you are visiting.

What’s more, you will be able to find out how best to take on these experiences independently without paying for a guided tour. While this can be a great tactic to save money, it’s also important to support the local economies you are visiting, and sometimes taking a tour, although more expensive, can lead to a much better and safer experience. Use your own judgment, mix independent adventures with organized tours and find a balance that works best for your budget.

Reduce Your Spending While Maximising Your Enjoyment Down Under

You don’t need to spend a fortune to have a great time when you’re on holiday down under. Following the tips above, you will be able to save a lot of money so you can extend your adventures or splash out on some bigger experiences that will make your trip truly memorable.

Planning ahead is key and with a little forward-thinking and a thrifty approach, you can ensure that your Aussie adventure is one to remember for all of the right reasons.

Australian Budget Guide

Manage your budget and get the most out of your trip to Australia with a bit of clever planning. Read on to learn how to calculate the cost of a trip Down Under.

Understanding how much money you need to holiday in Australia depends on a number of factors. While you can certainly live life to the luxe here, you can also enjoy a budget-friendly holiday. From finding bargain flights to making the most of free attractions, here’s everything you need to know about how much it costs to eat, sleep and stay here. And how to save a bit of money along the way!

When to book your flight

Aerial View of Sydney Harbour, NSW © Destination NSW

Aerial View of Sydney Harbour, New South Wales © Destination NSW

So, you’ve decided to visit Australia? Great choice! Your next decision will be picking the right time of year to book your flights. Keep in mind, Australia is on the opposite side of the world to the Northern Hemisphere, so our travel periods are the opposite as well.

Flights are going to be most expensive if you’re visiting in summer (December to February) – when the sun is shining and the summer school holidays are in full swing. If you’re travelling at this time, it’s best to book flights 10 to 12 months ahead – before planes fill up and prices climb.

If you’re planning to visit Australia outside peak periods, you’ll still want to book seven to 10 months in advance. You’ll still find plenty of sunny days in shoulder seasons and off-peak periods, and the flights can be a few hundred (Australian) dollars cheaper.

Generally, the best flight deals are offered well in advance, so the earlier the better. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but if you’re risk-averse, then it pays to have plans in place so you’re not disappointed.

How to save money on your flights:

  • Use a flight comparison site to find the best price – many have a ‘price alert’ function that will notify you when the price of flights drops.
  • Visit a few different airfare search engines and input your itinerary to see which site finds the cheapest flight options.
  • Speak to a travel agent who is an Aussie Specialist . They’re experts on travelling Australia and have the knowledge to help you plan and book the best options for you.
  • If you’ve decided to book everything yourself, book directly through airlines. Comparison sites and search engines are great research tools, but often you get even better deals when you book through your airline of choice. Many also offer price-matching promises.

Booking accommodation

Pink Hotel, Coolangatta, Gold Coast, QLD © Destination Gold Coast

Pink Hotel, Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Queensland © Destination Gold Coast

Just like flights, booking your accommodation will partly depend on the time of year you’re visiting. There are a lot of different hotels and accommodation on offer in Australia, from free campsites to AUD$1,000+ per night luxury resorts, so availability will depend on where you’d like to stay.

If you’ve got your heart set on checking into a boutique hotel , you can expect to pay around AUD$250 per night. It’s best to book your stay well in advance – around six months for peak travel periods.

If you’re not fussed where you sleep, you can use last-minute hotel booking sites to lock in great deals just a day or two before you arrive – between around AUD$100 to AUD$200 per night. Accommodation providers don’t want empty rooms, and many offer unbeatable deals to fill them. Some sites let you set alerts, sending notifications when prices drop.

If you’re on a tight budget, there are affordable hostels all over Australia, starting from as low as AUD$20 for a dormitory bed and up to around AUD$85 per person for a private room. Most hostels have an incredible price to quality ratio – not to mention it’s a great way to make some new friends!

How to save money on your accommodation

  • Avoid peak travel periods, such as summer and school holidays .
  • If you have a favourite hotel chain, sign up for its newsletters to be alerted about deals and offers.
  • Look for accommodation where kids stay and/or eat free. It's often a perk offered at big resorts and hotels.
  • Consider sacrificing location for price. You can find great hotels with lower nightly rates just a bit further from the city centre or a few blocks back from the beach.

Activities in Australia

Booking organised tours and travelling with guides is the perfect way to get a complete and immersive experience Down Under – you’ll be able to learn from locals, get up close to the wonders of nature and won’t need to worry about managing your own schedule. Popular day tours, like whale watching and guided walks, cost around AUD$100 to AUD$200. If you’re booking high-demand activities – such as the Field of Light or swimming with whale sharks – secure your spot at least a month in advance to avoid disappointment. However, most activities, such as surf lessons (about AUD$120) and some sporting events (from around AUD$65), can be booked closer to the day.

If you’re a frugal traveller, you needn’t miss out on anything. From internationally acclaimed museums and galleries to world-class hiking , there are free activities aplenty in Australia. With just a little bit of research, you can self-guide to exquisite beaches and secluded lookouts by taking public transport (less than AUD$10 for the day) or renting a vehicle (from around AUD$50 per day). There are even free historical walking tours in major cities (although a donation of at least a few dollars is expected).

How to save money on your activities

  • Walk! With leafy streets, water views and colourful neighbourhoods to enjoy, walking is the best way to take the pulse of Australia.
  • Make the most of Mother Nature. Many of Australia’s greatest wilderness areas are free to visit (though a vehicle entry fee is charged in selected national parks in most states). From trekking through the rainforest to cooling off in waterfalls, getting outdoors is the ultimate way to see the country – for next to nothing.
  • Visit museums and galleries without spending a cent. Many galleries offer free entry on certain days or times. Most also have year-round free entry to permanent collections.
  • Check out multi-attraction tickets and family deals . Search online or check with reception staff at your accommodation for bundle packages that offer lower rates on group and family activities .

  • Take public transport. Australian public transport is used by practically all Aussies. It’s clean, convenient and safe to use, only costing around AUD$2 per trip compared to AUD$20–AUD$30 for a taxi or rideshare for a comparable journey. Daily caps on public transport fares apply in most major cities: you won’t spend more than around AUD$17 on a weekday in Sydney or around AUD$9 on a weekday in Melbourne . Weekend fare caps are lower still. Better yet, some public transport (such as the Melbourne city circle tram) is completely free.
  • Save when eating out. Restaurant meals can cost from around AUD$20, but you can get discounts of up to 50% with sites and apps that offer deals at restaurants across the city. You can also keep an eye out for daily specials, happy hours and weeknight deals.
  • Make your own meals. If you have access to a kitchen at your accommodation, try your hand at preparing some classic Aussie foods . You can shop at local markets for fresh, seasonal produce, including Australian native ingredients .
  • Refuel at the cheapest petrol stations. If you’re driving around Australia, keep in mind that not all petrol stations offer the same price. The cost of filling a tank can vary from one outlet to another nearby outlet by more than AUD$10.
  • Access the internet using free WiFi. You’ll find it in most restaurants, cafés, hotels, fast-food outlets, libraries and even shopping centres. There are also free public WiFi hotspots in major tourist precincts.

Travel Letter

Planning a budget trip in Oceania? Well, it may be inexpensive if you smartly plan your holidays here. Australia, however, has many less well-known locations that are beginning to be discovered. There are several things you can do without compromising your budget.

Here, we have extracted some of the finest locations in Australia that easily fits your budget. Some of our favorites are listed below:

Burnie, Tasmania

Devonport, tasmania, hamilton island, queensland , nsw’s merimbula, kangaroo island, south australia, tasmania’s launceston, proserpine, queensland, byron bay, nsw, avalon, victoria.

Avalon Beach Australia

Avalon is the sole destination in Victoria. It is Melbourne’s second-largest airport. You may discover the best of the state by booking inexpensive flights to Avalon.

It only takes 45 minutes to drive to the Melbourne CBD from the airport. Geelong, one of the top sites to start a journey along the Great Ocean Road, is near Avalon. Other places to explore are Bell’s Beach, The Twelve Apostles, and Apollo Bay which is a worthy visit.

Broome, WA

Broome is the only place in Western Australia on the list. It is one of the nation’s most picturesque tiny towns located in the northwest of the country.

Cable Beach in Broome, where the sea meets the sand and the red dirt, is famous for its aerial photographs.  It is simple to spend days relaxing on the beach with a cold beverage. Whale viewing, snorkeling, diving, and trekking are all options for more active days.

Don’t miss the Dinosaur footprints that date back more than 100 million years. They have been preserved in reef rock at Gantheaume Point, allowing visitors to follow in their footsteps. The Broome Museum is great for history enthusiasts to learn about the town’s past. It’s also a must to try beverages at Matso’s craft brewery, a popular summer destination for Australians.

Burnie, Tasmania

Burnie is situated adjacent to some of the purest air zones in the world on the northwest coast of Tasmania’s main island, a little further out than Devonport. It includes places like Guide Falls Reserve and Burnie Park, where you may relax and get back to nature.

A day trip to Cradle Mountain, the Sheffield Murals, or Leven Canyon may be for those staying in Burnie for a while.

Tasmania is a popular destination for inexpensive domestic flights from Melbourne, but it’s not the only place in the nation where travelers can enjoy an affordable vacation.

Devonport, Tasmania

One of Tasman Island’s most underrated cities is Devonport, which is located 30 minutes east of Burnie. Devonport, like Burnie, provides quick access to the clean air of the northwest corner but is also closer to numerous mainland attractions, like the murals in Sheffield and the larger-than-life Launceston attractions.

Hamilton Island, Queensland

Many Australians consider Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays to be their ideal vacation spot. It is the perfect location because of its stunning beaches, low traffic, and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.

Holidays to Hamilton Island typically cost more than many other domestic destinations due to its great popularity, but it’s a place you will remember forever.

NSW's Merimbula

One of New South Wales’s most underappreciated cities is Merimbula. This coastal village is situated between Bega and Eden in southern New South Wales. The best things to do include lying on the beach, playing golf, viewing whales, and visiting wildlife refuges.

Kangaroo Island south australia

The theme of recent travel has been discovering the local locations, and for people in Adelaide, that local area is not very far away.

Although it only takes a little over 30 minutes to travel domestically from Adelaide to Kingscote, those coming from farther away may need to purchase a ticket to Adelaide first.

Those who visit the island will enjoy seeing the local fauna, which includes the name-bearing kangaroos, tammar wallabies, short-beaked echidnas, and other bird species.

Tasmania's Launceston

Launceston is a vibrant city in Tasmania, second only to Hobart in terms of size. Traveling in the city is quite cheaper than in other regions. There are many museums, art galleries, and historical attractions where wanderers experience the old culture of Launceston. Also, don’t forget to try the local cuisines as they offer you the best quality food at affordable prices.

On a road trip, Launceston makes a fantastic home base for exploring Tasmania. Spend a few days in Hobart or travel east to see the Bay of Fires and Freycinet National Park.

Proserpine, Queensland

For individuals who desire to tour the Whitsundays, Proserpine is an additional choice. Proserpine is situated on the mainland as opposed to Hamilton Island. The town’s art deco buildings and rustic lodgings are a throwback to a more laid-back era.

The city, which is most known for Airlie Beach, serves as the starting point for excursions to the Great Barrier Reef and some of the state’s best islands and beaches. Exploring Proserpine will give you an unforgettable experience that completely suits your pocket.

Byron Bay, NSW

This storied beachfront community in Northern NSW has long-drawn surfers, yogis, spa lovers, spiritual seekers, travelers, and those looking for themselves.

Byron is the place to be and be seen because of its world-famous surfing breaks, alternative culture, and gorgeous hinterland. Don’t forget to take a surfing lesson, enjoy sunrise and sunset at Wategos Beach, and attend Bluesfest over Easter.

Budget traveling is on high these days as many travels enthusiast plan their trip to locations that are pocket friendly. No wonder Australia comes second to none. Yes, you heard it right.

If properly planned, you can explore the country’s best places with limited cash. Here we’ve compiled all the places that provide the best version of Australia.

How to Get Around Australia on the Cheap

An empty, dusty Australian outback road on a bright and sunny day

With Australia stretching over 7 million square kilometers (2,968,000 square miles), it should come as no surprise that it takes a long time to get around the country. Considering the distances, it’s no wonder few people end up traveling the whole country — there’s just too much ground to cover on a short trip.

Most people fly around the country or stick to a small area to explore. These large distances lead to high transportation costs that can make it hard to travel around Australia cheaply — especially if you have a limited amount of time.

It takes weeks to drive the massive 14,500-kilometer (9,000-mile) circumference of Australia on main Highway 1 (the road that rings the continent/country). Thats with minimal stops and breaks too.

However, if you want to see things along the way, you should plan for at least a month (at the quickest). A more realistic timeline is 3-6 months.

Seriously. It’s a big country!

Many “grey nomads” (i.e. retirees in campervans) and backpackers spend that long (or more!) exploring this stunning country and its varied landscapes. To drive straight across the middle from Sydney to Perth , it takes about 3 to 4 days.

But what if you don’t have months? What if you only have weeks? What do you do?

It’s not impossible to get around Australia on a budget. In fact, it’s very possible if you come prepared.

Here’s how to get around Australia on a budget — no matter how long you are going for:

Getting Around Cheap By Flying

A Virgin Australia airplane flying against a bright blue sky

A brand new low-cost airline, Bonza, began operations in January of 2023 and plans to fly between underserviced cities around Australia but it only has a few planes currently.

Naturally, with so few carriers, unless there is a big sale, tickets are expensive. Sydney to Perth, for example, costs at least 450 AUD ($300 USD) round trip, however, 650 AUD ($437 USD) is more common. The 90-minute flight to Melbourne from Sydney costs around 211 AUD ($142 USD)!

Here are some sample fares on popular routes with two of Australia’s biggest airlines (prices are in USD):

If you don’t book early, expect to pay much more for your flights!

In short, I would avoid flying in Australia. When Australians joke about it being cheaper to fly to Bali than around their own country, they really aren’t joking. Unless you find a great deal or are in a rush, I’d avoid flying.

Getting Around Cheap By Backpacker Bus

Australia has a few backpack buses still in operation. These are great choices for younger backpackers looking to have fun, party, and hang out with other travelers. Everything is organized for you so you just need to show up and be ready to have fun!

Magic Bus is a backpacker/party bus and is perfect for travelers looking to get rowdy. Each month, the trip departs with 25 backpackers aged 18-35 for 3-4 weeks of exploring the country’s national parks, camping, bonfires, and non-stop parties and shenanigans.

Trips go from Perth north to Broome or east to Melbourne so you have to time your trip accordingly to line up with the set departure. The itineraries are flexible, as they let riders vote on where to go and what to do, so every trip is unique. They try to keep a balance of 50% men and 50% women, as well as a balance of different nationalities, so there is always a diverse group.

Trips cost around $250 AUD ($185 USD) per 1,000 kilometers so the price depends on which route you take and how long your specific journey is.

For a similar (but more intimate) experience, check out Road2Adventure . It’s essentially a party hostel on wheels, with space for 8 people to live and travel. It’s like the Magic Bus but much smaller. They run cross-country trips on set schedules, making it a fun alternative if you don’t want to spend a month with 20+ other backpackers. Tours range from 12-19 days and cost 2,195-3,785 AUD per person.

For a more independent option, check out Share Bus . It’s not exactly a tour as you “share” the bus with 9 other travelers and run everything yourself. They show you how to use the equipment, arm with you maps and information, and send you on your way. It’s essentially a self-guided camping experience with new friends. What you do is up to your and your fellow travelers.

Their rentals range from 10-21 days and cost between 569-1232 AUD per person. From October to April their rentals are available in the southern half of the country (including Tasmania) and from April to October they focus on the north. It’s a good choice for travelers who want more independence, enjoy meeting people, and love to camp.

Getting Around Cheap By Public Bus

This is one of my favorite transportation options in Australia. On the east coast, this will be your cheapest option. On the west coast, buses are surprisingly expensive. There are not many people moving up and down that coast and there’s limited competition. It’s often easier and cheaper to fly out in Western Australia.

However, on the east coast, you can find really cheap bus tickets, especially if you book in advance. Greyhound Australia is the biggest company and they sometimes offer $1 fares.

Here are some sample fares for popular bus routes in Australia (prices in USD):

Greyhound also offers several bus passes. The Whimit Passes range from 15-365 days of unlimited travel and are perfect for traveling around on a whim (hence the name). They come in 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 365-day passes ranging from 349-749 AUD ($235-505 USD).

There are over 180 stops and you can go in any direction on any route. It’s the most flexible option for anyone without a vehicle — and it’s the cheapest option there is.

Getting Around Cheap By Trains

The famous red luxury train The Ghan in Australia

Trains in Australia are also very expensive. For example, a one-way ticket from Sydney to Perth (which takes 3 days) is $1,200 AUD ($850 USD). It’s not really a cheap option so, unless you’re looking to splash out on a scenic route like the Ghan with your significant other (or just love trains), I’d skip traveling Australia by train.

There are very few ways to get cheap train tickets these days so avoid this transportation option. If you do take a train, keep in mind tickets for the scenic trains book out months in advance so book early.

Getting Around Cheap By Car Share

A rental jeep parked on the sand on a beautiful beach in sunny Australia

You can look on hostel bulletin boards to see who’s looking for people to join their road trip. You’ll always find someone, and it’s a great way to make new friends.

It’s really easy to rideshare in Australia. Every hostel has a bulletin board where travelers post rides and websites like Gumtree and Couchsurfing have active ridesharing sections where people look for cars or riders. It’s really robust. I HIGHLY recommend this way of traveling when in the country.

Some Rideshare Websites:

  • Share Ur Ride

Alternatively, you can also purchase a car from backpackers leaving the country or locals selling used cars. Rental services like Jucy are fairly expensive and would only be good as a last resort. You can usually find a used car for as little as $1,000-2,000 AUD ($750-1,500 USD). Though that sounds expensive, you can share those costs with other travelers making it the second most affordable way to travel!

Getting Around Cheap By Public Transportation

All of Australia’s cities have reliable, affordable public bus systems. In the bigger cities, such as Sydney , Melbourne , Brisbane , Adelaide, and Perth , you’ll even find subways and tram systems. This is the cheapest way to travel the cities. Fares cost between 3-4 AUD.

Skip the taxis — they add up fast. If you do need a private ride, Uber is available in all of the larger cities and towns. Use it instead — it’s much cheaper!

How Long Does it Take to Get Around Australia?

Here are distance and time charts so you know how long it takes to get places from the major cities when you travel around the country:

Traveling from Sydney

Traveling from canberra, traveling from melbourne, traveling from adelaide, traveling from perth, traveling from darwin, traveling from alice springs, traveling from cairns, traveling from brisbane.

When you plan to travel Australia , make sure you budget for transportation wisely.

Outside the busy eastern corridor between Melbourne and Brisbane , travel is expensive. You’ll pay a lot more than you think.

Plan accordingly, and you’ll save time, save money, and have a much more enjoyable experience!

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. My favorite places to stay are:

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (for everyone below 70)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)

15 affordable places to travel in 2024, ranked in a new report.

Want to take an affordable vacation in 2024? You’ve come to the right place. Although travel costs are on the rise this year ( up 3.1% ), it’s still possible to save money in 2024—if you know where to go.

A new travel report from the U.K.’s Post Office —a British-based mail and financial services company — has just unveiled some of the most budget-friendly destinations for 2024. And although the annual report is aimed at U.K. travelers, it’s a helpful list for Americans, too.

By analyzing currency strengths, local prices and essential tourist expenses in 40 popular vacation destinations around the globe, the Holiday Money Report 2024 highlights some of the cheapest places to travel. The report ranks the destinations based on a barometer that takes the local price of eight tourist essentials into consideration—including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. And while the report doesn’t include factors like hotels and airfare, it helps give a good sense of where your dollars will stretch the furthest.

This is the 18th year that the Post Office has done this report. And the good news: Prices have fallen since last year in 25 spots on the list. (A note that the original report included prices in pounds sterling, which have been converted into dollars here, using the exchange rate on the date of publication of 1.26.)

An aerial view of Hoi An, Vietnam, the most affordable destination to travel in 2024, according to a ... [+] new report.

Leading the list as the cheapest place to travel right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the Post Office report, a total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for the travel essentials makes this charming gem the ultimate bang-for-your-buck destination that won’t break the bank. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An entices visitors with its UNESCO -recognized Ancient Town, a picturesque spot where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It is also convenient to stunning white-sand beaches—some of the most beautiful in Asia .

Following closely behind in the second spot is Cape Town, South Africa, where an outlay of $68.48 a day for the essentials promises an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Table Mountain and pristine coastlines. Here, you can dive into the vibrant culture and indulge in world-class dining (a three-course meal for two people averages less than $44.140) without denting your travel fund.

The coastline of Mombasa, Kenya, with a pair of camels on Diani Beach.

Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This beachfront destination on the east coast of Africa beckons with its white-sand shores, vibrant markets and rich Swahili heritage, offering an immersive experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.

In a surprising twist, Tokyo, Japan—a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity—secures the fourth spot on the list. According to the Post Office, just $74.43 a day is needed for essential tourist purchases. Helping drive this ranking was the cost of a glass of wine (an average of only $4.56) and a bottle of water (averaging 77¢).

The cliffs of the Algarve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean above the Benagil cave in Lagoa, Portug.a

Rounding out the top five is the Algarve in Portugal, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a fraction of the cost compared to previous years. With its sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and delectable seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an affordable yet enriching getaway.

A month-by-month guide to the cheapest flights to international destinations

Jordan Waller

Airfare prices change regularly throughout the year, but if you know where to look, it's possible to find a bargain to even the most popular destinations — especially if you're able to be flexible with your travel dates.

TPG reached out to Skyscanner to trawl through their vast amount of airfare data and give you a comprehensive look at the destinations around the world that typically cost less to fly to. Whether you're looking to depart from the United States or from the United Kingdom, plenty of sweet spots can be found.

Below are destinations that are consistently priced low throughout the year and destinations that regularly pop up with cheaper airfares during specific months.

*All pricing taken from economy class, round-trip bookings made on Skyscanner for travel in 2022.

Which destinations are the cheapest to fly to year-round?

While certain destinations can be cheaper on average throughout the whole year, others fluctuate, and not always in the ways you might think.

For example, if you're based in the U.S. and dream of flying to Europe for your next vacation, the best prices for most European locations were in April, May and June, according to Skyscanner's data on the average cost of a return economy flight. This is true, according to that data, even though this time is normally considered a peak travel time for the region and coincides with the U.K. school holidays.

However, while you may be able to pick up cheaper airfare during this time, prices for hotels and attractions may be higher during these periods.

Meanwhile, the average return flights to London were at their lowest at the beginning of the year, between January and March. Note this can be a notoriously drizzly and cold time to visit the U.K. capital (though, let's face it, England isn't really known for its great weather at the best of times).

The next cheapest period to visit London from the U.S. was perhaps surprisingly between October and December. Again, this is during the colder months, but still great news for those looking for a potential Christmas escape to take advantage of some of the Thanksgiving and fall breaks in the U.S.

For travelers based in the U.K., we found airfares to destinations in Italy to be consistently among the top 10 cheapest throughout the year. Despite its popularity among British travelers, Greece didn't break the top 10 once for the cheapest average airfares.

Cheapest places to fly from January through March

Traveling from the us.

January through March saw the lowest average prices of the year for flights departing the U.S. to London and Paris, with the French capital coming in a smidgen cheaper to get to. If you take advantage of the convenient Eurostar links between these two European cities, you could easily hit both of these destinations during this period for less than you'd pay any other time.

Related: The best hotels in London

If you decide to do both, we suggest returning to the U.S. from Paris to avoid the U.K.'s notoriously high fees and taxes on airfares.

cheapest places to travel australia

Average airfare prices to Puerto Rico from the U.S. were among the cheapest during these months in 2022. January is also an ideal time to visit Puerto Rico, thanks to the dryer winter months with moderate temperatures and far less rainfall than you'll see during other times in the year.

Closer to home, this period is also a great time to visit Mexico , where you can enjoy much dryer and cooler temperatures.

Traveling from the UK

If you don't mind wrapping up to stay warm, you can bag plenty of great deals to Europe departing the U.K., but be warned that some places can be chilly during the winter months.

For example, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, can see temperatures dropping as low as 34 Fahrenheit (1.3 Celsius) in January and only just peaking over 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) in March.

Riga, Latvia, sees even lower temperatures, regularly plummetting to around 24 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) between January and February and peaking at around 33 Fahrenheit (1 Celsius) in March.

If you're looking for sun, Palma, Mallorca, is your best bet. The first months of the year generally still see days filled with sunshine. It won't necessarily be hot enough to top up your tan and enjoy a beach break, though — temperatures mainly float around the 61 Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) mark.

Cheapest places to fly from April through June

If you're considering a European vacation , these months pulled up cheaper airfares than any other, according to Skyscanner data, with good average prices for Spain, France, Portugal and the U.K. While each of these locations will begin seeing sunnier weather throughout June, you can still expect blues skies and bouts of sunshine during April too.

It is, however, worth doing some research before you book — U.K. schools break for Easter in the first half of April and again at the beginning of June for the summer half-term break. During these times, you can expect many European locations to be busy with family vacations and often see soaring accommodation prices. If you can, we'd recommend booking outside of these weeks to save on both money and time spent queuing due to increased numbers of other tourists.

Looking for something more far-flung? Tokyo has great average airfare prices during the spring, and if you time it properly, you could also witness Japan's beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically peaks in early April.

This is one of the prime times to visit Italy and take in the sights before its summer hits full throttle in July, bringing with it almost prohibitively high temperatures. Visits between April and June are perfect for soaking up the sun, alfresco dining and diving into this country's rich history.

Sicily, in particular, is excellent at this time of the year. However, note that it might get a little too hot for some as June approaches, especially if this year's wildfires and extreme weather are anything to go by.

cheapest places to travel australia

If Dubrovnik, Croatia, has been on your list for some time but now feels a little too in vogue and expensive, you could also get good prices on flights to Zadar . This charming seaside city is situated on the Dalmatian Coast and is known for its fantastic restaurant and dining scene, with an array of stunning nearby national parks.

Cheapest places to fly from July through September

For those yearning to visit Canada outside of its harsh winter periods, July through September can be an ideal time to enjoy a summer vacation. Toronto bursts to life during the Toronto Jazz Festival and Toronto Fringe Festival in July — perfect for culture vultures.

You can get good prices on flights to Mexico between July and September. While these months bring slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures, they also mark Mexico's rainy season, typically from late August to September.

cheapest places to travel australia

Conversely, if you've always had Peru on your bucket list, this can be a great time to visit.

It's the country's driest season — fantastic conditions if you plan to hike to Machu Picchu. According to Skyscanner's data, you can typically find good prices on flights to Peru during these months. However, note that if you plan to travel to Machu Picchu from Lima, you must either get a connecting flight to Cusco or take a long bus ride.

September can be one of the best periods to visit Ireland during its shoulder season. Along with good deals on airfare, you'll also typically see cheaper accommodation costs and fewer crowds. The weather can also be fairly mild during these months with good dry spells, though it likely won't be shorts and T-shirt weather.

Mid-August through to September also sees much milder weather in Italy and can be a preferable month to visit than July and August, which are the hottest months of the year and the most crowded with tourists.

Elsewhere in Europe, July onward is a great time to take advantage of good weather in France.

According to Skyscanner data, Rodez, France, is one of the cheapest places on average to fly to from the U.K. during these months. It also sees high temperatures and lots of sunshine. The mercury is typically around 77 Fahrenheit (25 Celsius) in July and August before dropping off to a more manageable 69.8 Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) average in September.

Cheapest places to fly from October through December

There are great prices on airfares to Mexico from October through December, and these months are also a particularly intriguing time to visit.

Mexico's Day of the Dead celebrations typically take place Nov. 1-2. The festival is an opportunity to honor deceased family members, and there is a wide array of celebrations throughout Mexico, making this a memorable and enlightening time to visit and learn about Mexican traditions.

cheapest places to travel australia

If you keep your eyes peeled, it's also possible to get low-priced airfares to Iceland, allowing for a festive visit to Reykavik to take in the snow alongside a healthy jolt of Christmas spirit.

Visit London to see the city decorated for the festivities as it gears up for the holidays and New Year celebrations. Sure, it'll be cold and the weather occasionally unwieldy, but it's a magical time to visit the U.K. capital.

Related: These are the best Christmas markets in Europe

For U.K. travelers looking for an affordable winter getaway, cast your eyes toward Italy, where the weather, though much milder than in the earlier months of the year, is still quite the contrast to the climate at home if you pick the right destination.

For example, Sicily will feel much closer to the U.K. spring weather. Other areas, such as Milan or Venice, won't be quite as warm but still make for great locations for romantic winter getaways on the continent.

Bottom line

While airfare prices fluctuate, they don't always follow the expected patterns you might guess. Based on Skyscanner's data from last year, you might be surprised by how much cheaper certain destinations in some months compared to others — especially airfares to Europe from the United States during summer when one might expect higher costs.

Similarly, from the U.K., Italy is generally fairly cheap to fly to if you look in the right places. By looking further afield to places like Rodez, France, or Zadar in Croatia, you might even visit somewhere that's commonly overlooked by other tourists wishing to visit better-known cities such as Paris or Dubrovnik.

How Do You to Find Cheap Accommodation in Australia?

Saving on accommodation in Australia is no easy task, unless you know what to do and where to look.

During our 18 month road trip around Australia , we were constantly on the look out for ways to save money on accommodation because Australia is an expensive country to travel, though one worth exploring!

If you’re thinking you’d like to find cheap accommodation in Australia and stick to a modest budget, then in this guide I’ve listed some of my top tips for finding budget places to stay in Australia.

Tips for Saving Money on Accommodation in Australia

There are many ways you can save on travel costs, but at the end of the day, accommodation. is going to be your number one expense.

Below are eleven ways we’ve saved money on accommodation costs on our Australian road trip .

1. Stay Mid-Week

If you can time your visit right by staying mid-week, you can really save some cash. Especially avoid the big cities over a weekend if possible.

We’re stunned by how much the prices for a comfortable bed can rise on the weekend – some places triple.

Because we’re on an indefinite road trip around Oz, we constantly see the fluctuations in prices from mid-week to weekends.

We stayed in a cabin in Port Campbell on the Great Ocean Road mid-week and grabbed this deal – pay for 3 nights, stay for 4.

And we’ve seen better prices mid-week for all accommodation types from hotels to apartments to caravan parks.

If you have to visit a city over a weekend see tip number 8 for our best online booking sites, or consider staying in a backpacker hostel.

We stay in family rooms at YHA Hostels . If you have a group of 4 consider staying in a 4-bed dorm to cut down your expense.

2. Negotiate for a Better Deal

One of our favourite ways to save on anything! There’s nothing wrong with a little conversation to help you get a better deal.

Competition is pretty fierce in the travel industry as people are finding smarter ways to travel for cheaper and longer. Put your smiley face on and either call the property in advance, or speak in person once you arrive. They can only say no right?!

Here are a few ways to ask for a cheaper or better deal:

  • Is that the best price you have at the moment?
  • What if we stay longer?
  • Are you able to waive the fee for children? (Many of the campsites in Australia charge per child. We’ve negotiated it off several times)
  • Does breakfast come with that? Are you able to include it?
  • Is there any chance for an upgrade?
  • I did notice XYZ property down the road is advertising $X can you match that? I’d much prefer to stay here, but I have to keep to my budget.

You might even negotiate a better deal by giving up some of their services.

We once had an entire night for free in Wilsons Promontory National Park as there was a mix up with another booking and our cabin had not been cleaned.

We told them not to worry, we’d clean it ourselves (we were desperate to stay here and there were no other options AND it was pretty clean).

3. Rent an Apartment or Home

Another one of our favourite strategies, particularly for families or small groups, is to look for vacation rentals.

Apartments , or home rentals, are a great way to save on accommodation costs. They are usually cheaper and more practical than a hotel, or even a caravan park cabin. And sometimes even cheaper than a private room in a hostel.

Traveling with other family members or another couple? Why not get an apartment big enough and share the cost.

Craig’s parents visited us during our trip in Tasmania and several times we rented either an apartment, or a cabin with 3 bedrooms. Sharing the apartment really reduced our per-night rates.

We prefer to use Booking.com to look for apartments. They are not just about hotels, they have a large inventory of apartments around the world and there are no hidden fees, service fees, or cleaning fees like you get with Airbnb. WE also use VRBO before using Airbnb.

You can also book directly with holiday apartments – just do a Google search in the area you are visiting beforehand.

See more about our 3 bedroom home in Coles Bay from the photos above here.

4. Go Camping

One would think camping is a cheap option in Australia – the answer is yes and no (just don’t compare it to other countries).

The average price for camping is about $35 per night, but this can rise to as high as $80 depending on where and when you camp, how many people per site, and if you want a powered or un-powered site.

Camping in holiday parks is also going to considerably up the price as they come with facilities in the public areas such as an indoor pool or outdoor swimming pool and free wifi.

For families, they will charge you per child, and we have even been charged $12 per night for Savannah when she was 2 years old – which got up my goat and was able to negotiate away!

Again, staying mid-week versus weekends will save you, as will avoiding major holiday periods.

We look for the right deals and we use our negotiation tactics to at least remove the fees for the kids. One good thing about now having a camper trailer (see tip number 7) is we are self-sufficient so can utilize the many free camping sites in Australia.

Camping websites Australia:

  • ExploreAustralia.net.au – discover free camping in National parks
  • Big4 Caravan Parks – sign up for their membership to get better rates
  • Top Tourist Caravan Parks – sign up for their membership to get better rates)
  • Look at the State Tourism Board websites
  • Google search the National Parks sites for each state.

5. House-sit

We haven’t used the housesitting strategy yet via an official membership site, although we did sign up for a few at the start of our trip.

To be honest, we’ve found these a little frustrating and expensive, and the competition and flexibility required difficult to land a house-sitting job. Many of the house-sits were in outer areas, and we didn’t want to visit these locations for the sake of house-siting.

You also need time to organize it, or be super flexible to move on a whim. With kids and an online travel business , and a country the size of Australia, it’s too difficult for us to commit to apply for that awesome house-sitting job in Perth in 4 months, or last minute.

In saying that, if you are very flexible on your locations, are retired or semi-retired, work a digital business, or are on a working holiday I totally get the value this can provide.

However, we have been very fortunate to be able to house-sit a few times on this trip for friends in some great locations like Melbourne and Bright .

Relationships can really pay off and we hope to return the favour one day!

6. Couch-Surf

We have not used the official Couchsurfing website where you can stay in a stranger’s home (which we’ve been told by others is a great way to travel like a local), but we have been fortunate to be able to stay at several friend’s homes in various states.

And we don’t usually end up on their couch either, but a spare room which is always appreciated.

The bonus of this is you get to have a night of great conversation with friends and re-connect with people you may not have seen for a while.

7. Buy a Camper Trailer (or Caravan)

Because we were on an 18-month road trip around Australia , we purchased a camper trailer. You can find out why here .

Although the initial investment is large, over time it drastically reduces our per-night cost of our accommodation. Plus, it has a kitchen which reduces our eating out expenses.

We purchased a brand that has a high re-sale value , so if we desire at the end of our trip we can sell it and recoup the majority, if not more of our purchase price.

Apparently, if you sell up in North Queensland , or over in Western Australia you can actually make money or at least get most back (most of the inventory is down south so people are willing to pay more up north).

Also, we have solar panels on top of our camper so we can free camp in National Parks – and there are many beautiful spots in Australia for this. We can also stay in un-powered sites in caravan parks instead of powered which again reduces our per-night cost.

For free and cheap camping options purchase the orange covered Camping Around Australia book found in all camping and book stores.

Or visit their website ExploreAustralia.net.au

If you are on an extended trip around Australia, or on a working holiday in Australia , buying or renting a vehicle that you can sleep in, then re-sell at the end of your trip is a great way to reduce your accommodations expenses + give you unparallelled freedom to explore!

What if you just want to rent a campervan / motorhome? Some rental sites for booking include:

  • Travellers-Autobarn

8. Choose the Best Hotel Booking Sites

When we need to stay in a hotel in the city, or a hotel anywhere for that matter, we have a few favourite booking sites we use to find the best deal.

And once we have found our best deal using the sites below, we also call the particular hotel directly as sometimes you can get a better price by going direct.

Our favourite booking sites:

  • Booking.com – thousands of properties, easy to search.
  • Trip Advisor – millions of reviews, easy to navigate.

There are other booking sites out there, but many of them come with additional fees and taxes when it comes to paying for a place at the check out.

Booking.com doesn’t have this which is why we always choose them when we look for places ourselves.

9. Look for Partnerships: Exchange Accommodation for Exposure

Through building our business and our travel blog, and by the nature of our work, we are proud of our partnerships with YHA Hostels and Mantra Apartments in Australia.

Even before we had these official partnerships we always stayed at YHA Hostels and at Mantra because they offer great value.

YHA hostels are the best for families in Australia and we trust them and have not had a bad experience yet. And we adore Mantra properties – they are our favourite chain in Australia.

You don’t need to have a travel blog to find partnership opportunities, nor do you need a sizeable social media following.

Because we live in the days of influencers and Instagrammers, many accommodations will offer discounts to anyone who shares a review or post on their social media.

You could have 500 followers, and still be offered 10% off in some places – just look out for these offers online when looking up accommodation choices.

10. Look for work aways or work exchanges

Just because you don’t have a travel blog, or work in the industry, does not mean you cannot get free accommodation or cheap accommodation in Australia by exchanging skillsets.

I’ve seen plenty of signs in the YHA’s advertising for accommodation in exchange for work. There are also companies such as WorkAway, WOOFING and HelpX where you can find opportunities to work in a hostel or hotel in exchange for free accommodation.

There are also Facebook groups where you can find work away jobs in particular countries and cities.

I also received free accommodation for 6 months in Bangkok as a benefit to my teaching overseas job. Teaching in exchange for accommodation is not common in Australia, but you can opportunities that require other skills such as maintenance, decorating, or even farming.

11. Save your budget for the big cities

We set a daily budget for our Australia trip, but Melbourne blew that budget out of the water!

The price for accommodation in major cities such as Melbourne and Sydney is vastly more expensive than the small towns, and there is no escaping it.

You may want to look for more budget accommodations elsewhere so you can put more of your budget into accommodation in these cities, to try and offset the costs.

Other than that splurge in Melbourne, we’ve been able to keep under budget.

Top tip! Look for the Ibis budget hotels in major cities. These are affordable hotels designed for the modest budget traveler, but with a reputable well-known global brand. They don’t often get the best reviews online because they really are budget, meaning they lack some basic amenities, but they are a good option for those looking for a cheap place to stay for one or two nights.

  • Ibis Budget Melbourne Airport
  • Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD
  • Ibis Budget Brisbane Airport
  • Ibis Budget Sydney Airport
  • Ibis Budget Sydney East
  • Ibis Budget Sydney Olympic Park
  • Ibis Budget Fawkner
  • Ibis Budget Canberra

12. Travel in the off season

If you can, time your visit outside of peak season when prices are typically lower. The peak season in Australia is the summer, which runs from December – February.

Many international travelers like to visit Australia in the Spring, which is from May until June. This is also when Australia sees its whale season, and attracts a lot of wildlife enthusiasts.

If you want to time your visit for the off season, travel between July and August, when Australia has its winter.

You will find cheaper prices, and if you stay on the East Coast, you will still find it has beautiful weather.

13. Forgo luxury amenities

If you really want to find cheap accommodation in Australia, you may have to forgo some luxuries and homey comforts.

Don’t worry, even the most budget accommodation will have free wi-fi and clean showers and toilets.

But the more affordable accommodation options will lack amenities that cost them more. These are things like 24-hour front desk, which increases the room rate as they need to pay for someone to spend all night in reception.

Concierge service, saunas and spas, luggage storage, laundry facilities and swimming pools are all luxury amenities that you may find increases the room rate.

14. Stay out of the center and drive in

Staying close to tourist attractions can bump up the room rate. You will find cheaper deals if you stay a few km outside the CBD and drive in or take a bus to attractions.

Final Thoughts on Saving on Accommodation in Australia

So there you have it, those are our top tips for finding cheap accommodation in Austrailia.

There are so many clever ways you can save on accommodation, but my last big tip for you is to book in advance.

Gone are the days when you could simply rock up and knock on a hotel door and ask for a room.

Nowadays, if you don’t book in advance, you will find the nice affordable options have been booked up and you’re left with either the high end luxury places or the really bad places.

The further you book in advance, the more choice you have to choose from and the more likely you are to finding a good deal.

The Best Mobile Plans Under $30

Chris Neill Avatar

If you feel like you’re paying for more than you need with your current mobile plan , or you want a cheaper option that has the same amount of data, then it might be time for a change.

Swapping to a smaller provider with a SIM-only plan is the best way to save money on a mobile plan . These smaller providers – also known as MVNOs – are powered by the Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone networks , but tend to offer much cheaper phone plans. This is because they have lower overheads, smaller advertising budgets, don’t always stock handsets, and tend to be a more barebones affair. You’re getting data, talk, and text with these plans, and not much more.

Here are some of the cheapest mobile phone plans available in Australia right now, broken down by price.

Table of contents

The cheapest mobile phone plans in australia under $10 per month, the cheapest mobile phone plans in australia under $20 per month, the cheapest mobile phone plans in australia under $30 per month.

While there are a few mobile plans that won’t cost you more than $10 per month, most of these prices are due to introductory discounts. So while you’ll be paying $10 or less now, that price will increase after your first six months elapse. Your monthly data allowance is pretty limited for most mobile plans in this price bracket.

TPG currently has the best value plan in this tier, as the telco is currently running a half-price discount for new customers. That means you’ll get 12GB for $10 per month for your first six months, and then pay $20 per month thereafter. As far as data caps go, this is the best you’ll get within this price range.

TPG’s sibling network, iiNet , has a similar half-off deal across all of its mobile plans too, although you’ll get less data for the same price. With iiNet, you’ll get a data allowance of 8GB and pay $10 per month for the first six months.

Both TPG and iiNet are powered by the Vodafone network.

If you don’t want to mess around with a plan that’ll increase in price after a discount period ends, Dodo is offering a 2GB plan with a flat rate of $10 per 30-day renewal. That’s not a huge amount of data, but for a plan that’ll always be under $10 per month, it’s the only offer available. Dodo is powered by Optus’ 4G Plus mobile network.

As far as the cheapest plan in this price range goes, Moose Mobile is offering a plan with some solid data-to-dollar value. You’ll get 25GB of data and pay $11.80 per month for the first eight months, and then $24.80 per month thereafter.

If you want to keep the cost of your phone bill under $20, even at full price, Moose also has a plan that comes with a 15GB data cap where you’ll pay $14.80 per month for the first eight months of your connection. After that discount period passes you’ll be paying $19.80 per month. Moose is powered by the Optus 5G Plus mobile network .

TPG is a great pick for those who want a little extra data each month. Its 25GB phone plan will set you back $12.50 per month for your first six months, and $25 per month thereafter. If you’re an existing TPG internet customer , the full rate drops to $20 per month, which is great news if you have a hard cap of $20.

TPG’s 45GB plan also has some great dollar-to-data value in this price bracket, although its full price exceeds the $20 cap. You’ll pay $15 per month for the first six months of this plan, and then $30 per month thereafter. However, all of TPG’s mobile plans are contract-free, so you can swap to a cheaper plan or jump to a different provider once the discount period is over.

SpinTel is also worth considering. A 25GB plan will set you back $14 per month for your first six months, and $22 per month thereafter. SpinTel is powered by the Optus 4G Plus mobile network.

As far as the most data you can get for $20 or less goes, Circles.Life is offering a plan discount combined with a lot of bonus data. With this provider, you can currently score 150GB of data for only $20 per month. However, this will only last for the first six months of your plan. Once that period is over your data allowance will roll back to 50GB per month and your phone bill will see a pretty steep increase to $50 per month.

As we move up the price scale, you start to get access to Telstra-powered providers , like Tangerine . You’ll get 12GB of data while paying $22 per month, which makes it one of the cheaper plans in this price range. However, as far as data allowances go, there are plans with better value, from other providers and Tangerine itself. Spending $27 per month with Tangerine will get you a data allowance of 25GB.

Dodo is currently running a pretty solid introductory offer where it’ll double the data allowance of its $25 per month plan. You’ll get a monthly data cap of 50GB for the first three months of your connection, before dropping back to the standard 25GB.

Once again, TPG is one of the best value options available. You can currently sign up for its 45GB plan and only pay $15 per month for the first six months of your connection. Once that introductory period ends, you’ll be paying $30 per month.

If you want a lot of data that’ll always be under $30, then take a look at Kogan Mobile , which has a 40GB plan for $25 per month. Although your first month will only be $20. Kogan is powered by the Vodafone network .

If you want a bit more data, Felix Mobile has a 50GB plan that’s currently $15 per month for the first three months of your connection. Once this introductory period ends, the plan’s price will increase to $30 per month, which will still keep you nicely within this price range. You’ll need to use the promo code FELIX50 .

Everyday Mobile has a prepaid plan that includes 32GB at $30 per month. While that’s a fairly average data allowance in this price tier, what makes this plan stand out is that it includes a bonus offer where you can save 10 per cent on your grocery shop once per month at eligible Woolworths shops.

If you want a 5G plan, your best bet is Telstra’s budget brand, Belong . The provider is currently offering a 25GB plan for a flat rate of $29 per month.

There’s also Amaysim , which is powered by Optus’ 5G network and is currently offering a 32GB plan for $30 per renewal. As a bonus, you’ll only pay $15 and get an extra 18GB of data (to a total of 50GB).

If you want a lot of data, Circles.Life will give you an extra 40GB of data while knocking $20 off your phone bill for the first six months of your plan. That means you’ll be paying $30 per month for 140GB. While this deal isn’t as good as the one covered in the previous price tier, it does offer a larger standard data allowance of 100GB once that six-month period ends. This plan’s full price is $50 per month.
