ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

Here's a rundown of the tour guide company, ToursByLocals, including what they do, what their features are, and if it's worth the money. Read on to find out more!

city tours with locals

When you’re planning a trip to a new city or country, you want to make sure you get the most out of your visit by finding the best things to do, places to stay, and restaurants to eat at.

If that's the case, then read all about them in our travel blog collection here. Here at  Pilot , we’re all about helping you plan your trip and make the best of your time abroad.

However, if you're not the type that wants to plan out every detail of your trip, why not get a tour guide instead? We know that for many people, a great way to get to know a city is to take part in an organized travel tour, whether that’s as part of a large group or in a more private and personalized setting. Whether it's joining a tour on a yacht or hopping on a Busabout , tour guides comes in many shapes or forms!

There are many ways to find local guides to a city or town, and  ToursByLocals  is one of them. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Read our comprehensive guide to find out!

What Is ToursByLocals?

ToursByLocals is an easy-to-use website that provides you, the traveler, with access to local tourist guides in cities all over the world. It currently operates in 193 countries and has more than 4,500 guides that you can connect with, in locations ranging from Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and Bern to places a little further afield, like Tokyo, Iceland, and even the South Island of New Zealand.

Tourbylocals logo

The tour guides are all local people that just so happen to have expert knowledge of the ins and outs of their hometown. Taking a tour from a local is one of the best ways to learn more about historical events that took place in a certain city, explore specific neighborhoods, or just find out about the best things to do while you’re traveling.

As well as personal tours of cities, ToursByLocals offers  shore excursions , allowing you to get a local’s perspective of any of the stops on your cruise.

At the moment, you can even book virtual tours with ToursByLocals if you’re craving a travel fix but can’t get away right now—perfect for armchair tourism during the pandemic! If you book and attend a live virtual tour, which will still be run by local people, you’ll also receive the money you’ve spent as a voucher that you can spend on an in-person tour when you’re next free to travel. Score!

Is ToursByLocals an Accredited Tour Company?

Now, you might be wondering why ToursByLocals doesn’t come up if you’re searching for top-rated tour companies in Europe, or if you’ve been googling the best US travel and tour options. There’s a pretty simple explanation for this: ToursByLocals isn’t actually a tour company.

Instead, it acts as a marketplace that gives you access to individual guides who run their own tours. All tours listed on the website are private tours, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can message guides to see if they can customize a tour to better suit your needs.

What Is a Personal Tour?

One of the main benefits of using ToursByLocals is that you’ll be receiving a personal tour rather than a group tour. We’ve all seen group tours on our travels: Hordes of people following a slightly tired-looking guide who’s carrying some kind of brightly colored umbrella or flag, speaking in hushed tones into a microphone and not stopping to answer any questions along the way. Sounds great!

A personal tour is not like this. Instead, it’s one that you and your travel buddies (whether that’s your family, your partner, or your friends) book privately with a guide. The benefits of a personal tour are numerous:

  • You can customize the tour based on your own interests
  • You’re free to ask as many questions as you like without feeling like you’re bogarting the guide!
  • You can book it for a time and date that suits you, making it easier to fit in with your other travel plans
  • You could gain access to certain tourist spots that may be closed to large groups
  • You avoid having to interact with  that one person— you know the type—who thinks they know more than the guide!

Instead of booking onto a tour that’s targeted at large groups, which can be impersonal and pretty rigid in structure, a personal tour allows you more freedom. It gives you the chance to get to know a city however you   want, making it easier to find your way around and uncover the coolest parts of town.

How Do I Find a Private Tour Guide?

Using ToursByLocals to find a private tour guide is easy. Sign up or log in to your account, then search by location. Add the dates you want to go on a tour, then browse the options and book whichever one interests you most.

Choosing a location on a map for travel Toursbylocals

You can also contact the tour guide before booking to arrange customization if you’re looking for something more personal to your interests.

Once you’ve got everything organized, just pay ahead of time and attend your tour. It couldn’t be simpler.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Sometimes when you’re traveling, things go wrong. Maybe your cruise ship has illness on board and has been told it can’t dock, meaning your planned shore excursion is a no-go. Maybe you’ve had to cancel your whole trip because of a family issue. Or maybe you’ve just changed your mind! Can you still get your money back?

The ToursByLocals cancelation policy is pretty fair. If you cancel 15 days or more before the tour was due to start, you can get all your money back. Nice. You’ll also get a refund if certain unforeseeable events take place—this includes the ship being told it can’t dock.

If you’re booking ahead of time but aren’t completely sure whether you’re definitely going to attend the tour, the website also offers a more flexible (but more expensive) cancelation policy, known as the “Any Reason” policy. If you’ve paid extra for this, you can cancel for any reason at all, as long as you do so before the tour starts.

How Do I Become a Local Tour Guide?

If you want to  become a tour guide  for ToursByLocals, you can  apply  through the ToursByLocals website. You have to be legally permitted to give tours in your area (but this doesn’t mean you have to be a licensed tour guide—“passionate locals” are also encouraged to apply).

If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to take part in an interview process to make sure you’re suitable for giving tours, and to check your English skills. You’ll also have to undergo a background check.

If you pass all the stages of the application process, you can start selling your tours on ToursByLocals.

Do Tour Guides Make Good Money?

Tour guides that offer their services through ToursByLocals can charge as much as they think is appropriate for their tours. The company takes a percentage of every dollar earned, but you can factor this into your pricing when you set up your profile and tour offerings.

Tour guides making money

Remember to make sure you’re getting paid a fair amount, but you’ll also want to ensure your prices aren’t so expensive that they’re off-putting to potential customers!

Is ToursByLocals Worth It?

It’s easy enough to find and book private tours with ToursByLocals, but is it really worth it? The costs of private tours can be high, and with guides setting their own prices, you could end up paying huge amounts for a private tour.

It all depends on what you’re looking for from your vacation. Some people prefer group tours, as they give them the chance to meet new people and get a basic overview of a city or a particular sight. For others, it makes more sense to book a private tour because it’s easier to get a personalized or customizable experience. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

I'd recommend looking at different options and reading up on specific reviews of that individual tour operator before making the purchase!

My Rating: 4.1/5

Five-Star Rating on TripAdvisor!

Highly recommend the Salt Lake City Tour w/ Tabernacle Organ Performance. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided a great history of the city as well as points of interest along the tour. The Tabernacle Organ recital was spectacular. Thanks to the tour guide for a great experience for two first time visitors to Salt Lake City!

I did all 3 tours..The 5 hour City tour on a Sunday, so saw the Tabernacle choir..a must! I also did the Copper mine and the Great Salt Lake tour. The weather was poor for the copper canyon tour, but it was lovely by the afternoon for the Lake tour! All the buses arrived on time and all 3 drivers drove with care and were really informative!

There is a lot to see during this tour, the highlight being the choir performance - visually and musically beautiful. With so much to see, our guide was a key component to making the tour the fun time it was. He was very knowledgeable and did a great job. You could tell he loved talking about his city and its heritage.

Our guide and bus driver was an excellent people person. Gave us all an indepth talk on history of Salt Lake City whilst showing travellers all of the city's attractions. He got to know where we all came from ,made us feel at ease and offered great loal advice. Overall a very enjoyable 3.5 hr tour.

Amazing Guide!!!

"Silvia was so knowledgeable and fun! She made our taco tasting the highlight of our Mexico City trip. Had an incredible time."

local Silvia

"Mariel, was a very passionate and extremely knowledgeable guide whose passion for her country was very evident in the way she shared the info on the tour. It was interesting how she was able to bring in all the socio economic, cultural, and political of the history of Mexico. A very warm and personable guide. We would have missed out on understanding the true workings of the city. A tour with Mariel is a must when visiting the city. Thanks to the informative tour, we enjoyed and were able to interpret the Ballet Folklore De Mexico. I would give her a 100 out of her 100"

"Daniel was very friendly and easy going. He allowed us all the questions we wanted. It was really like having a friend show you around their home. It was really enjoyable and i will definitely choose Daniel for other tours as well. "

"For us, our. time spent with Daniel really marked the starting point of our stay in Mexico City. Up til that point we hadn't really connected with the city. We were in a bland hotel in the centre, where, unlike most cities, there didnt' seem to be a lot to see in the surrounding streets. Daniel drew us out to Eugenia - an amazing district we would probably not have discovered had it not been for his tour. From the moment we met, we felt at ease in his company and our two and a half hours flew by. He introduced us to a range of street stalls, taco stands and an amazing local food market where we encountered a unique range of foods. If we showed interest in a new fruit or vegetable, a taste was arranged and any preconceptions about taco tastes were blown out of the water as we encountered snacks that mixed tripe in with pork and salsas that were a million miles away from their London cousins. So, the food was great but every bit as interesting was the opportunity to speak to a resident of the country we were visiting and get his take on local politics and life in the city. His English was great and he was able to leave us with loads of suggestions for bars, restaurants and even a goth market . We know he loved a previous visit to London and we sincerely hope that, should he return, he will give us the opportunity to make good our promise to introduce him to the latest tastes and places of our home city. https://letorey.co.uk/leets/mexico-day-1/"

Loved the Taco Tour!

"Mariel took us to a neighborhood and taquerias we would have not gone to blindly by ourselves, this stay being our first stay in Mexico City. It was great to go eat tacos where the locals go and to learn more about the Mexican food traditions and habits. Mariel shared a lot with us and answered our numerous questions. The 5 taquerias we went to were all very good and different. I highly recommend this tour. "

guest Pascale

Great tour to discover Mexico history!

"My Partner and I are very glad we booked that tour at the beginning of our stay in Mexico City. It was great to immerse ourselves in the Mexican history and culture. Mariel is an amazing host and we highly recommend her! You won’t be disappointed. She sent us a note to confirm our meeting point the day before our tour and she got there a bit in advance. Mariel is very personable and highly knowledgeable about the history of Mexico. She answered our questions with pleasure and recommended us a lovely rooftop terrace where to go have a drink after our tour. We had a great time with her!"

Amazing experience

"Our day with Rojelio surpassed what we had expected. Going to Teotihuacan was the highlight of our trip. From the moment Rojelio picked us up we were transported to another time leaning facts and history we never knew. Rojelio has so much knowledge about the site and was so gracious. We had many questions and every one was answered. This experience was worth every penny. "

best tour ever!

"Mariel was a wonderful host who gave us lots of information about Mexico & the food. We had AMAZING tacos from local vendors & taco spots and even better conversation. It was also great to explore a new area in CDMX. Thank you so much Mariel for one of the best parts of our holiday!"

guest Olivia

Best guide ever!!!

"With Daniel, my family with two young kids, two grandparents felt like we were on a walk with a trusted friend. He was so engaging and interesting, my kids had such an amazing time! This was such an amazing time, do not hesitate! Daniel is smart, funny, interesting and above all, such a kind and thoughtful person."

guest Richard

Excellent Guide

"Rogelio was an amazing tour guide. He showed us the unique aspects of the Teotihuacan pyramids and was flexible with our needs. Awesome guide and great tour. "

6 top-rated newport mansion tours + tips from a local.

Newport's famed mansions are a must-see in the City by the Sea.

Top-Rated Newport Mansion Tours

Front exterior of The Breakers, a Newport Mansion.

Experience peak luxury and elegance at these stunning properties.

More than a century ago, America's wealthiest families commissioned their "summer cottages" to be built in the coastal enclave of Newport, Rhode Island , along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The era's most renowned architects outdid one another in size and scale as well as opulence and grandeur. Today, Newport is synonymous with its exquisite Gilded Age mansions, and experiencing them in person is an absolute must.

The majority of the Gilded Age mansions in Newport – but not all – are owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County, and many of the most popular are open to the public year-round. Get ready to explore the Bellevue Avenue Historic District as you tour Newport's best mansions.

The Breakers

Interior of a room in The Breakers that features a piano, chandeliers, intricate curtains and more.

Courtesy of Andrea McHugh

Price: From $29 for adults; $10 for youths 6 to 12

Standout perk: The Breakers offers an audio Family Tour that engages young visitors with stories about the lives of the children who summered there, the staff who ran the home and interesting things to see in the mansion, such as the playful dolphin sculpture beneath the grand staircase.

Considered the grande dame of all the Newport mansions, The Breakers was no doubt built to impress. The summertime escape of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his family was designed by the Gilded Age's preeminent architect, Richard Morris Hunt, and boasts a classic Italian palazzo design with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace via the self-guided audio tour available in nearly a dozen languages on the Newport Mansions free app, which will come in especially handy if you plan to explore more than one mansion. Take some time to explore the beauty of the 13-acre grounds as well, and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes .

Those with a curiosity of how a mansion of this magnitude worked – after all, The Breakers was considered a modern marvel when completed in 1895 – will enjoy the Beneath The Breakers Tour. This guide-led tour takes you through the boiler room, tunnel and basement. Guests will learn how the home was outfitted with electricity, still considered a novelty during the Gilded Age. This tour requires a separate ticket from The Breakers' audio tour and is best suited for visitors 13 years and older. Advance reservations are recommended.

Local tip: As The Breakers is the most visited mansion in Newport, a good time to visit is either when it opens or toward the end of the day, especially in the busiest summer months. The early evening light can be ideal for photos, but plan accordingly as the house and grounds close one hour after the last tour admission. Before you visit, save time by downloading the free Newport Mansions tour app.

Marble House

Interior of a bedroom in Marble House that features a large rug, detailed wallpaper and more.

Price: From $25 for adults; $10 for youths 6 to 12

Standout perk: While it's hard to rival the splendor of Marble House, the Chinese Tea House on the end of the mansion's lawn parallel to Cliff Walk is an unexpected visual delight. For $35 extra, tour ticket holders to Marble House can enjoy sandwiches and refreshments at the cafe at the Chinese Tea House or make a reservation for brunch and afternoon tea service, offered on weekends May through December. The service is operated by Stoneacre Restaurants, which owns two popular restaurants in downtown Newport.

From the moment visitors walk under the four towering Corinthian columns fronting this mansion, they know they are in for a treat. Like other Newport Mansions audio tours, Marble House has a self-guided tour available via the organization's free app, allowing visitors to peruse the property at their own pace.

Inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles , Marble House is an architectural masterpiece. Made from 500,000 cubic square feet of marble, the mansion was a 39th birthday present from businessman and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva. He spared no expense for their summer escape. Later in life, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont became a suffragist and hosted events at Marble House in support of women's right to vote. Viewers of the popular HBO series "The Gilded Age" may recognize rooms in the mansion as it was used for filming on location and also inspired sets.

Local tip: Don't miss the ballroom on the first floor – while it's not the largest in Newport, it's widely considered the most ornate, with gilt details from floor to ceiling.

Interior of a room in The Elms that features chairs and tables, high ceilings, statues and more.

Standout perk: While The Elms is spectacular, its formal gardens – 10 acres' worth – are extraordinary, complete with nearly 40 species of trees plus terraces, gazebos, fountains and colorful blooms, depending on the time of year.

Fashioned after an 18th-century French chateau, The Elms is a must-visit mansion, from the sun-soaked conservatory and the drawing room to the handsome library and the breakfast room bearing Chinese-style lacquered wall panels. A self-guided audio tour is available in nearly a dozen languages, but any fan of "Downton Abbey" or those curious about life behind the scenes of Newport's mansions will appreciate the Servant Life Tour at The Elms.

On this newly updated, guide-led tour, visitors start in the basement, where you'll see the operations of the house such as the kitchen and butler's pantry, all the way up to the domestic staff's living quarters on the third floor. Along the way, travelers will learn more about the personal lives of staff, and see rare photographs of servants at work and in their free time. You'll even get to learn about topics like immigration and labor disputes on this tour.

Local tip: The Servant Life Tour is not only fascinating, but you'll get the rare opportunity to go on The Elms' rooftop and be rewarded with an amazing and unexpected view of Newport Harbor.

Rough Point

Interior of a room in Rough Point that features large, arched windows with stunning views.

Price: From $20; free for children 12 and younger

Standout perk: Rough Point sits at the southern end of Bellevue Avenue, so getting here allows you to enjoy views of both private mansions and those open to the public along the way. The mansion's oceanfront perch offers an uninterrupted view of the beautiful Cliff Walk Bridge, a stone arch bridge across the rocky inlet where Doris Duke would swim regularly.

Though a Gilded Age mansion through and through, Rough Point is perhaps best loved not for its grandeur but for its most famous resident: Doris Duke. The late heiress, collector and philanthropist – dubbed the "richest little girl in the world" when she was born – spent considerable time at Rough Point until her death in 1993. A self-guided audio tour leads visitors here through the art-filled home room by room, highlighting eclectic sculpture, family portraits, centuries-old tapestries, renowned furnishings and many pieces Duke collected as an avid world traveler.

While the formal rooms such as the Yellow Room and jaw-dropping Music Room are a sight, the ocean-facing Solarium affords the best views. Whether before or after your tour, visit the house tour on the website for footage of Doris Duke at the home as well as behind-the-scenes videos. Note that Rough Point is typically open seasonally from spring through mid-November.

Local tip: On Rough Point's grounds, you'll find a pair of life-size topiary camels inspired by Doris' pet Bactrian camels, Princess and Baby. Both enjoyed the summer months with the tobacco heiress at Rough Point and have become the unofficial mascots of the mansion. The Newport Restoration Foundation encourages taking a #camelgram photo with the Princess and Baby topiary to share on social media.

Illuminated exterior of Rosecliff in the evening.

Dave Hansen | Courtesy of Newport Mansions

Standout perk: Rosecliff's signature feature – despite being home to Newport's largest ballroom, which hosted lavish society events throughout the Gilded Age – is its celebrated heart-shaped grand staircase.

Following a multimillion-dollar renovation, Rosecliff resumed tours in September 2023, much to the delight of Newport's visitors. Architect Stanford White, who was the mastermind behind Newport's historic Casino Theatre and myriad other important buildings, modeled the mansion after the Grand Trianon at Versailles for silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs. Its European influence is felt throughout.

Explore the mansion at your own pace via the self-guided audio tour on the free Newport Mansions app. Don't forget to look up in the ballroom, where the trompe l'oeil ceiling creates an air of whimsy and romance, making it the ideal setting for the filming parts of "The Great Gatsby" with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, as well as the more recent "27 Dresses."

Local tip: Rosecliff hosts many amazing events, including the annual Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, which features dinners, events and seminars with wines and other libations from around the world.

Chateau-sur-Mer

Interior of the dining room in Chateau-sur-Mer featuring a painting ceiling.

Standout perk: A new audio tour is your guide to this National Historic Landmark, considered Newport's first true mansion. Learn about the lives of the Wetmore family members who lived there for more than a century.

Until the arrival of the Vanderbilt houses in Newport in the 1890s, Chateau-sur-Mer was considered the seaside city's most palatial residence. Today, visitors can explore the home, an Italianate-style villa built for wealthy China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore, who did quite a bit of entertaining at this summer cottage.

Local tip: While Chateau-sur-Mer is essentially a Victorian Era time capsule, the mansion's grounds are home to amazing tree specimens, shrubs and more, including a striking weeping beech tree. If you explore deeper into the grounds, you'll find a cool circular maze made from mounds of grass; this earthwork by artist Richard Fleischner is known as the "Sod Maze" and makes for a relaxing place to meditate.

We had an Airbnb in the Zonz Rosa of MX and wanted to get acquainted with the neighborhood. Monica asked questions about what we wanted to see and do and then filled our time together with exactly that. She was fun, informative, and knowledgeable about our neighborhood. We enjoyed the perfect mix of history and pop culture.

Adriana was an amazing guide! She crafted our itinerary based on what we wanted; she had great anecdotes and tidbits about tacos, Mexican cuisine in general, and Mexican history. I had a great time, and I’d definitely book again the next time I’m in Mexico City

We were fortunate to have an amazing guide, Francisco Cabral. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. I believe he was the reason the tour was so good.

Given it was my first visit to Mexico City I was a bit unsure where to start to understand it. Nico my guide was fabulous - folk of knowledge that helped me better understand Mexican culture and history. He also tailored how tour to me. Great experience.

TikTok Food Critic Keith Lee Is Back in His Hometown of Detroit and Ready to Eat

The self-proclaimed TikTok critic is looking to visit local restaurants that could use his magic touch — though he didn’t realize the city was hosting the NFL Draft

Guess who’s back in Detroit? Keith Lee, one of the most viral names in online food reviewing and a native son of the Motor City, raised in the Joy Road and Evergreen area on the westside, has arrived in the city and is ready to eat. The TikTok personality returned with his family for a visit this week and is asking for recommendations of local restaurants that want to be reviewed.

It’s a busy time to go check out restaurants in Detroit, as Lee pointed out in a post published Thursday, April 25. There’s the NFL Draft taking place downtown (which is already breaking attendance records with a whopping 275,000 visitors who descended upon the central business district on Day One of the Draft). Helping to kick off the football festivities, another Detroit native, Big Sean, delighted fans Thursday with a quick performance on the Draft stage.

In light of the chaos overtaking much of the city’s hospitality industry during the Draft, Lee says he’s not treating this trip as a “full food tour,” but is rather taking this time to revisit some of his beloved childhood favorites, like coneys, corned beef egg rolls, and Better Made chips.

Lee wasted no time with the taste-testing, first stopping by Hart Plaza — the NFL Draft Experience area site, where dozens of local restaurants, food trucks, and cafes are set up for the festivities. He appreciated the fact that many of the food vendors were Black-owned. He offered a sneak peek of what he’s getting into food-wise during this current visit by checking out a tray of wings from Good Vibes Lounge . He reported that the East English Village establishment had just gotten hit (presumably by a car) and that the ownership was feeling “defeated.”

“God willingly, she got a space here at the NFL Draft,” Lee says, before he displays a screenshot of Good Vibe Lounge’s Instagram account to let viewers know how to find the neighborhood bar and restaurant.

“God don’t make no mistakes,” added Lee, who is known for his spiritual take on his so-called “ Keith Lee effect .” Eater has reached out to Lee via email about his visit and will report any updates when they become available.

Lee has become a household fixture among the food-obsessed for his food tours in cities across the United States, including San Francisco , New Orleans , Dallas , Chicago , and Atlanta — a destination that went viral for its many dramatic instances of bad experiences. A native Detroiter, who now lives in Las Vegas, Lee has more than 16 million followers and makes it a point to visit smaller mom-and-pop establishments — often that are BIPOC-owned — that may have impressive menus, but that might be lacking in online presence. His visits are unannounced and are primarily takeout. He often sends in a family member to fetch the food when it’s ready so as not to attract attention. He rates each place 1 to 10 for customer service and the quality of the food, and makes sure to note his personal preferences whenever he scores. When he first started, he focused on Vegas-area restaurants and did his reviews while sitting in a tiny children’s-sized Paw Patrol chair, and now he most often films his reviews in his car.

The “Keith Lee effect” that his reviews have on small businesses is profound. Janel Prator, owner of the Puddery , a Houston-area dessert business featuring Prator’s creamy banana pudding, told Eater in a December 2023 report that her shop was struggling to take off before a review Lee did his did of her place in November. His influence was immediate business took off, with customers lined up from the front door eager to try her desserts.

The last time Lee paid a visit to his hometown was in September when he reviewed several beloved local food businesses, including the Spot food truck, which, according to Lee’s review, had contacted him on social media to invite him to check out its food. He ordered a steak crunchwrap supreme with Hot Cheetos (on the side) and gave the truck a rave review for its service, house-made “Turbo” sauce, and commented that the meat was seasoned to perfection. Similar to Prator’s experience, the Spot also reported traffic snaked around its truck in the days after Lee’s review went live.

Advocacy leads Savannah to consider future of horse tours as city studies impact

city tours with locals

Local Facebook group Ban Horse Carriages Savannah is filled with posts for "daily action calls," often including a short note and contact information for a Savannah City Council member to lobby that day. The group also hosts protests about every three months.

On a recent Saturday at City Market, there were about 20 people holding signs that read "cities are unsafe for horses, retire them now" and "Horses suffer on Savannah streets."

One of the group's leaders, Lauren Ball, said, "Our group inherently believes that the city street is an inhumane place for horses to be."

Local horse carriage operators dispute that the horses suffer, and city statistics show there have been three horse-related accidents in city streets since 2015, and zero cases of heat-related incidents. City Manager Jay Melder recently said local operators have "A+" compliance with local guidelines.

City of Savannah to study options for horse-drawn carriages

However, local advocacy has moved the needle in recent months, culminating in a city council workshop held mid-April to explore updates to Savannah's horse-drawn carriage ordinance. Among the potential options for council include a ban on the use of horse-drawn carriages, which would likely be coupled with a sunset and transition plan for the businesses.

Now, the city is taking 60 days to explore potential impacts of the various options council may consider. Work to be done by city staff will include case studies of cities that have implemented bans and sunsets, as well as other communities that have passed lesser restrictions.

"I'd like to know more about what has happened with the cities that have banned horse-drawn carriages," said Post 1 At-Large Alderwoman Carol Bell.

Options presented at the workshop also included keeping the ordinance as is, or adding new restrictions to the ordinance that fall short of a ban, such as seasonal bans during hotter months or load restrictions.

City ordinance updated in 2017

Savannah's current horse-drawn carriage ordinance was updated in 2017, bringing the temperature for stopping operations down to 95 degrees from the previous 98. Cara Marshall, owner and operator of Carriage Tours of Savannah, said she most often pulls horses off the street before the ordinance requires.

"I also am thinking in the best interest of my animals who I love and adore and support, and take care of daily," Marshall said. "I wouldn't put them in danger, and I wouldn't do anything to their detriment."

Based on city council's discussion of the options, support for a ban may be split. Three council members―District 1 Alderwoman Bernetta Lanier, District 4 Alderman Nick Palumbo, and District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee―expressed support for phasing out the use of horse-drawn carriages.

Palumbo said this was one area where the city should "innovate," and council should, at a minimum, explore further restrictions. Purtee expressed concerns with traffic safety and the impact of busy city streets, often with loud horns or music, on horse behavior.

"Animals are animals, and they are going to respond as animals will to that sort of thing," Purtee said.

Numerous council members were supportive of the city conducting broader research on potential impacts of any ordinance changes. The 60-day timeline for a report on those impacts puts mid-summer as an approximate time for council to hold a vote on a ban.

City officials estimate around 30 jobs come from Savannah's horse-drawn carriage industry. Marshall, one of the local operators, has worked in the business for 25 years. Carriage Tours of Savannah has multiple staff members who have worked for the company for over a decade, Marshall said. The company also partners with other local businesses such as feed companies.

"It's not just our small group of people under this roof at Carriage Tours of Savannah. It has a much further reach than that," Marshall said.

Well, when it comes to real estate, the answer is: It depends. We acknowledge and apologize for the wishy-washy answer, but there’s really no great way to compare Green Bay, WI, to Los Angeles.

In 2024 draft order, we’ve pulled key housing stats for 10 metros where NFL rookies will have to navigate the real estate market. The Chicago Bears own the first and ninth picks, and New York is represented for both the Giants with the sixth pick and the Jets with the 10th pick.

Which NFL city truly scores?

Below, you’ll find the pivotal stats for each metro including inventory (the number of homes for sale), the median list price, as well as the price cutoff for a home in the top 10%, 5%, and 1% of that metro’s pricing. And you’ll find that the players can expect a range of accommodations this fall, depending on which NFL town they’ll call home.

When you cross-reference available inventory and a reasonable median list price, these newly minted pros should be stoked if they’re picked by the Bears or the Atlanta Falcons . Both Chicago and ATL offer an intriguing mix of homes to choose from without the sky-high prices you’re likely to find on the coasts.

And if either of Chicago’s draft picks in the first round decided to splurge on a first home, they’d find they could buy at the very top of the market by shelling out “only” $3.8 million on a place—a figure that isn’t exactly out of reach for a high draft pick.

Compare that $3.8 million with the tippy-top of the market in either New York City or L.A. (where high-end prices easily climb into the eight-digit range), and Chicago looks extremely enticing.

In terms of the tightest inventory, Boston has the fewest options to choose from—with just under 4,0oo listings active on the market in March.

New England Patriots newcomers should also know that cities in the Northeast have been regulars in our monthly look at the nation’s hottest markets . What’s more, the unlikely suburban town of Manchester, NH , near Boston, has topped our hottest market list for years.

Aside from Chicago and Atlanta, there’s a wide middle ground of options in these metros set to welcome an influx of new stars. Metrics are about even for Nashville, TN;   Washington, DC;  and Denver . Minneapolis is similar to those three metros in terms of available inventory but is a tad cheaper. Phoenix is similar in terms of median price but offers far more housing inventory to choose from.

Where will rookies need to scour for affordable options? It’s no shocker: L.A. and New York City present distinct challenges for recent draftees. It can be difficult for a first-time homebuyer to balance affordability, desirability, and commute time in two of the nation’s largest housing markets.
