Virgin Voyages' guide to Cruise Key West

A haven for artists and sunset-seekers alike, the only poetic rival to the writers who called Key West home is the geography itself.

It’s all a breeze in the keys

More than its pirate past and raucous Duval Street parties (although, to be fair, those are worth the hype), Key West is home to an ever-evolving community of boundary-pushing artists and dedicated preservationists—lined with pastel-colored houses and nights spent toasting sunsets so incredible they inspire some of the world’s most sacred art.

Parasail the Painted Island Skies

Float through the air as one of the 12-passenger parasailing boats glides you past sights that can only be seen from the air. As you parasail, take a look below to spot dolphins playing in the surf, or colorful tropical birds flying past.

When the sun sets in Key West… you’ll know. And not just because a myriad of artists from Jimmy Buffet to Judy Blume will make art inspired by the island’s evening end. You’ll know because the sky lights up like fire—tangerine and gold stretching far and wide across the Caribbean sea as you pull away from the dock. Setting on a day spent in a place that goes far beyond a bachelor and bachelorette party destination—where the best of New Orleans and Nantucket meet in the Caribbean to create a little island with a very big personality.

Choose a graceful sailing schooner, a sleek modern catamaran, or a roomy dinner cruise liner with live music and all the trimmings – this curated selection of the best Key West sunset cruises offers good times set against one of nature’s grandest spectacles.

Depart the harbor in the late afternoon to enjoy an evening on the water, or combine dolphin watching, snorkeling, or a glass-bottom boat tour with sunset and the perfect end to another day in paradise. Key West sunsets are famous for highlighting nature’s grandeur as the sun sinks below the broad ocean horizon and brings on dramatic color changes of a range and intensity not seen on land. The unobstructed fetch of the light, atmospheric moisture, and other refractory factors combine to produce awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Add a chilled beverage and a loved one to share the occasion and the result is sublime. Click on a selection below to learn more about the most popular Key West Sunset Cruises.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answers provided below are based on answers previously given to customers' questions.

Q: What type of boats are used for Key West Sunset Cruises?

A: The diversity of available sunset cruise vessels is one of the things that make Key West Sunset Cruises so special. Guests who enjoy sailing can choose a 65-foot skipjack schooner with authentic lines that replicate the sailboats used by 19th century Florida Keys fishermen and wreckers. Or a modern sailing catamaran with the stability, speed, and generous deck space these craft are known for. Power catamarans are fast and smooth, perfect watersports or dolphin-watching platforms. And of course, enjoying a buffet dinner and cocktails aboard a 65-foot custom party catamaran should be on everyone’s bucket list. For a wedding, anniversary, or other special occasion, try a private charter to have a sail or power yacht all to yourself.

All the boats used for these popular Key West Sunset Cruises are top-of-the-line designs built for safety, comfort, and fun on the waters around Key West. The United States Coast Guard regularly inspects every Key West Sunset Cruise boat, and all required safety equipment is aboard and properly updated at all times. This is luxury sunset cruising at its best, with expert local captains and crew members, high-tech navigation gear, and the latest in quiet, efficient, low-emission engines. Plus, there are those added touches to enjoy like room for cocktail and wine service, deck space for top local musicians to perform, and even a bit of space to dance on some cruises.

Q: What makes a Key West Sunset Cruise so special?

A: Something about sunset in a tropical island location inspires people to a greater appreciation for what is normally a simple daily event. The famous and elusive Waikiki sunset “green flash” draws hundreds of camera-toting tourists to the Kalakaua Avenue beach walk each evening. Maui has Mt. Haleakala, the “House of the Sun” with sunsets worth an hour drive up the mountain. Beach bar decks in Phuket Thailand get packed as early evening comes on. And sunset in Key West is definitely a big deal whether seen from land or water.

Mallory Square and the nearby anchorage waters have been a hub of activity in Key West for over two hundred years, and when hippies arrived in town during the late 1960’s, they discovered that Mallory Pier offered a perfect wide-open view to the west. The custom of celebrating the amazingly colorful ocean sunsets took hold, and now Mallory Square and the Key West sunsets are both world famous.

Visitors have been boarding boat tours out of the harbor near today’s Mallory Square since the mid-19th century. With quiet, unobstructed on-deck views, the blazing orange, red, and purple clouds along the horizon and the awesome disc of the sun visible as it slides out of sight captured attention very early on. Now, modern vessels are able to provide visitors with a nice range of specialized sunset-watching cruises to suit any taste, and the best way to find out why Key West Sunset Cruises are so special is to come aboard and try one (or more).

Q: Which Key West Sunset Cruise is best for me?

A: The only easy choice among the many popular Key West Sunset Cruises is deciding to go on one. After that, the variety of attractive options may easily lead a visitor to decide that the only solution is to enjoy more than one sunset on the water! But if a choice of just one (or two) must be made, the best strategy is to consider what you like best and who is joining you for what could easily be the highlight of any Key West visit.

Naturally, the idea of gliding smoothly over turquoise water under sail while toasting a perfect day with a cold beer, glass of wine, or cocktail is very tempting. A Sunset Sip & Sail or Premium Sunset Sail with Hors D’oeuvres and Full Bar will provide a perfect happy hour start for a couple planning an evening on the town.

For an active family, or anyone who enjoys the water, taking an afternoon snorkeling trip that winds down with a beautiful sunset (and beverages) offers the best of both worlds. A Key West Sunset Snorkel Sail is just the ticket. Nature lovers should try a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour Sunset Combo or take the Dolphin Watch Sunset Snorkel Cruise.

Looking to party with some reggae or just enjoy live music and a cocktail hour at sunset? Take a look at Rum n’ Reggae or the Sunset Party Cruise. The award-winning Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail is notable for its pairing of fine wines and craft beers with gourmet appetizers. Special occasions (and every Key West sunset is special) call for a Sunset Champagne Cruise or Dinner Cruise. And for the ultimate in luxury, gather family and friends or just one significant other on a 65-foot schooner and sail away on a Key West Wind & Wine Private Charter.

Q: What kind of wine is served on the Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail?

A: Looking for a sunset cruise with a focus on fine wine to go with the fine view? The Key West Wind & Wine Sunset Sail is a legend with locals and visitors alike. This elegant and awesome sunset cruise has pulled down top ratings on Trip Advisor for several consecutive years in addition to earning a Top Sunset Cruise designation (one of the top 2 in North America) from Coastal Living Magazine. The Wind & Wine is a cruise that stands above the rest because it is one of very few sailing excursions in the United States that offers a selection of “real” fine wines from America and around the world.

A small group will gather on deck beneath the billowing sails to enjoy an intimate atmosphere, tropical music, and the incredible Key West sunset along with 8 different wines from around the world and 5 types of domestic and imported beer. There are usually 4 red and 3 white wines plus a champagnoise open for the tasting. The charcuterie and cheese board goes far beyond simple sailors’ rations to deliver the perfect wine pairings with Dill Havarti, Smoked Gouda, fresh Mozzarella, and Brie cheeses. Caprese skewers, summer sausage, honey-drizzled green apple slices, fruit, water crackers and more make for the ultimate water-borne wine tasting session.

Q: Skipjack schooner or catamaran – which one is best for a sunset cruise?

A: Sailing schooners and sailing or powered catamarans are the two most popular Key West sunset cruise vessels. In fact, these are the most commonly used craft for all types of Key West water tours from Backcountry snorkeling and kayak tours to glass-bottom boat rides. The reason for this is simple – skipjack-style schooners and catamarans are both shallow-draft boats that are well-suited to navigating the sandbar- and reef-filled waters around Key West.

Skipjack schooners were originally designed for harvesting oysters in shallow Chesapeake Bay. Adopted for use by 19th-century Florida Keys wreckers, sailors who would race out to salvage cargo from ill-fated ships caught on the reefs around the Keys, skipjacks became very common in local waters as general working and fishing boats. Modern catamarans are adaptations of ancient Polynesian boat designs used by sea-going peoples who lived on tropical islands ringed by shallow coral reefs and lagoons. The ability to skim through the shallows and land directly on the beach was critical. Known for their stability and versatility, today’s catamarans are the fastest and shallowest-running boats on the water.

Both types of vessel provide a safe, comfortable ride and can take guests to the best places to sightsee and play in Key West waters. Do you enjoy a touch of history and the romance of a tall ship under sail? Then a schooner would be a good choice. These classic ships have been sailing out of Key West for over 200 years, and guests who come aboard a Key West schooner today are in for an award-winning luxury sunset cruise.

Catamarans also move very gracefully under sail, but a key difference is that the cat’s deck remains level at all times because the vessel does not heel (lean over under the wind power) like a single-hull sailboat. A catamaran can also offer more wide-open deck space between the two hulls. This allows for seating at tables, live music and dancing, and ease of movement around deck for enjoying the view and taking pictures. The broad, flat deck also makes the catamaran a great play boat for an afternoon of watersports and sunbathing.

Schooners and catamarans are both a lot of fun on the water, so the choice between them is mainly about a guest’s personal preference. Planned activities for the sailing trip as well as any physical limitations and the need for ease of movement should also be considered. Of course, many Key West visitors end up going out on both types of vessel to enjoy not only beautiful sunset cruises but the many other opportunities for fun on and in the water that have made Key West a world-famous tropical vacation destination.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Cruises from Tampa to Key West

Escape on a delightful Caribbean vacation on one of our cruises from Tampa to Key West. Choose a shorter voyage to the sunshine, with blissful days in both Key West and Grand Cayman. A longer cruise gives you the luxury of two overnights in steamy New Orleans, as well as visits to Honduras, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and the charmingly eccentric Key West.

During one of these unforgettable cruises, you’ll revel in warm tropical weather and heavenly beaches and discover a wealth of natural wonders both on land and underwater. Snorkel over reefs and shipwrecks that teem with marine life, or explore mysterious Mayan ruins. Embrace the local cuisine, from conch in Grand Cayman to rich gumbo in New Orleans and spicy tacos in Mexico. During days at sea, unwind by the sparkling pool on board, or indulge in a relaxing spa treatment.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call.

Stop in sunny Key West, a quirky city with a lively downtown and pristine coral reefs. Discover vibrant marine wildlife during a snorkeling excursion or go on a kayaking trip around maze-like mangroves, where you’ll see stingrays, crabs, and other tropical fish. Embrace the town’s laidback atmosphere while strolling down festive Duval Street, or explore attractions like the Ernest Hemingway House and the Southernmost Point of the United States during a bicycle sightseeing tour.

Grand Cayman is famed for the vast expanse of Seven Mile Beach, but there are plenty more reasons to visit. Interact with wild stingrays or snorkel over the wreck of the USS Kittiwake, now colonized by dazzling corals and tropical fish. Take a trip to Hell, a stretch of jagged black limestone formations that could indeed resemble the underworld. Back in George Town, shop for duty-free goods and sample local specialties like delicious conch chowder and Tortuga rum cake.

New Orleans

Take in the evocative sights and sounds of the Big Easy on a cruise from Tampa to Key West that also stops in New Orleans. You’ll have two nights to explore the legendary jazz bars and pubs of atmospheric Bourbon Street. By day, there are paddle steamer cruises on the Mississippi to enjoy, the grand Oak Alley Mansion to discover, and boat trips out into the bayous to spot alligators, turtles, and wild birds.

RATED #1 ON TRIP ADVISOR'S "THINGS TO DO IN KEY LARGO"!

We came to the Keys for our honeymoon and this was by far our favorite thing we did! It’s such a fun way to explore Key Largo. Our Captain was super cool and informative. He definitely made it a great time!

We had a great time on this cruise. The pace was so relaxing. The kids loved being able to get out & do some swimming/snorkeling while I watched the sunset. Captain Jason was very friendly & attentive. Would highly recommend this adventure to anyone looking for a peaceful, breezy way to catch a gorgeous sunset in Key Largo.

We did a 4pm private Tiki Cruise. SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!! Since we were later in the day, we caught the early part of the sunset. We saw plenty of fish, a manatee and dolphins. Best of all, it was quality family time!! The owners were super nice and easy to book with and our Captain was the best! Terrific value for the price!

We booked the whole boat for my fiancé’s birthday for a sunset cruise. Booking was super easy. Trip was awesome got to go swimming while sun was going down. Captain Chris was super cool and mellow which made the trip even better. We are locals and will recommend this trip to all our friends, family and clients. Looking forward to doing it again!

We had a great time cruising with Joey. I told him I wanted to see a manatee and sure enough he found one hiding in the mangroves.

Our group of 3 couples had a fantastic mid-day Tiki boat excursion with Captain Joey! Definitely enjoyed the great weather, Joey's knowledge of the area is awesome and he was the perfect personality for our group as well as his selection of music.

Small Boat Cruising in the Florida Keys

  • By Bianca Dumas
  • July 12, 2022

Bahia Honda anchorage

We were tied to the fuel dock in Marathon, the midpoint of the Florida Keys, in the early part of 2022, when I realized our mistake.

Other cruisers traveling the Great Loop were on the loop’s southern stretch of the route, while some bluewater cruisers were starting to stage for passage to the Bahamas and beyond. I asked the dockmaster if any slips were available, and learned that it’s perpetually high season in the Keys, including at that moment. Along with cruisers and sailors, fish migrations change throughout the year, calm summer conditions attract divers, and festivals bring in the party crowds.

“We’re always booked out,” he said, shaking his head. Then he paused, perhaps realizing that he’d just sold us a total of 6 gallons of diesel. “Wait, what size is your sailboat?”

We were on Jackalope , a Nor’Sea 27. He shifted into a smile. “Oh yeah, we can probably squeeze you in down there,” he said, pointing to the inner harbor.

Florida Keys

We were grateful for the offer, but in the end, we stuck with our plan to anchor out. We had stayed on a dock—at Bahia Honda State Park—only once during our monthlong Keys cruise. While a lot of people on bigger boats doing the loop preferred marinas, anchoring out seemed to fit with our small-boat cruising style. We were basically camping, which required few amenities and created a lot of options. We took bucket baths when we couldn’t go ashore for showers. We cooked from simple ingredients that didn’t have to be refrigerated: lentils, rice and pasta. We paddled our inflatable kayak to shore for an occasional restaurant meal.

We laughed when we were once mistaken for homeless people on a resupply walk, but how could we argue? We don’t have the same look as those who can blow-dry their hair and pull clothes off a hanger.

But our small boat makes for a big adventure. We crossed the Gulf of Mexico from Fort Myers Beach directly to Key West, and because the 90-mile crossing took us three days and two nights, we had the experience of a much bigger, more challenging passage than other boats would. Our sails go up quickly and easily, so we take advantage of every quarter-hour of good wind that we can find.

porthole

Moving slow and low, we don’t fear crab pots; they’re easy to see and steer around, even in the dark. And since a keel-hung rudder protects our small propeller, hitting a crab-pot float head-on doesn’t cause trouble. At our top motoring speed of 4 knots, we can see dolphins, turtles and manatees before they dive for cover.

We can’t avoid getting tan because we steer from an open center cockpit. Nor can we avoid getting exercise because we have to paddle ashore rather than motor. ( Jackalope ’s canoe stern means we don’t have a motorized dinghy on davits.)

Like the mythical Western creature that shares its name, Jackalope has a small stature. Just right for us.

The Best Weekend Cruises From Florida

A few days beneath swaying palms can change your life.

By Robert Schrader | Published on March 18, 2024

There's only one thing better than a trip to the Sunshine State — and that's the wide variety of weekend cruises from Florida that allow you to mix a sailing with a little time in Florida itself. Whether you're a couple looking for a few days of palm-shaded romance or a family seeking a fun-filled trip during which the kids can blow off some steam, it's hard to resist the allure of setting sail from Florida's many ports to even more idyllic spots further out to sea. Best of all, cruising is a relatively all-inclusive option no matter which sailing you choose, with transportation to various ports, food, entertainment and your place to stay all part of the fare.

The options for weekend cruises from Florida are diverse, even if you only have a small number of days at your disposal. Florida has four ports — Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa and Orlando (Port Canaveral) — that you can choose from based on which is most convenient and which offers the best combination of ship and itinerary for you. Cruise to The Bahamas in just a few days or stretch your vacation to reach Mexico's storied Yucatán Peninsula or the beautiful shores of the eastern Caribbean. Read on for a variety of options to help determine your best choice.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Couples

Bahamas Cuisine Conch Fritters, Grand Bahama Island

From the sugary sands of The Bahamas to the steel drums of Jamaica and the pink flamingos of Aruba, a weekend cruise is one of the most ideal weekend vacation ideas because of the opportunities for couples to relax together. The best part? No matter your budget, there's an option perfect for you and your significant other.

Only have three nights to spare and a more limited budget? You can fly to Fort Lauderdale and cruise to The Bahamas — and still pack in a ton of excitement onboard and off. Starting in summer 2024, you can sail on the brand new Utopia of the Seas SM , the largest, most action-packed ship to sail weekend cruises from Florida , where you'll find that the onboard amenities (17 waterslides, eight pools and a soul food brunch among them) are only the beginning. At Royal Caribbean's private island resort experience, Perfect Day at CocoCay, the overwater cabanas offer peace and privacy for couples and are worth the splurge for those looking to carve out some space of their own. Settle yourself and your partner in your own paradise as you watch the sun set over the sea from your lounge chairs, and end the day by ordering dinner for two brought right to your table by the ocean.

If you've got seven nights to spare, you and your beloved can travel further afield to the western Caribbean. Cruise on Symphony of the Seas®  to San Juan, Puerto Rico where the only thing more romantic than snorkeling through the seawater hand in hand is the warmth in your partner's eyes as you clink margarita glasses. Back onboard, book a table for two at Jamie's Italian for Tuscan-inspired fare followed by an evening of cocktails and dancing.

With five nights, you can look at western Caribbean options on Independence of the Seas®  out of Miami. On one sailing, you can sign up for a shore excursion in George Town, Grand Cayman that will let you swim with the stingrays — while holding hands, of course. On yet another, you'll head to Falmouth, Jamaica where you can also snorkel — or just find a local hangout and feast on jerk chicken together to the beat of local reggae music.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Families

Dunn's River Falls, Falmouth, Jamaica

If you're a family with children looking for a weekend cruise from Florida, you'll also be spoiled with choices. For families with children of all ages who only have three nights, the best option is The Bahamas, where the three-night sailings minimize the amount of time you'll have to pull the kids out of school. What's more, the ease of relaxing at Perfect Day at CocoCay is unparalleled for beach-loving kids and parents. You can sail on Allure of the Seas® , Independence of the Seas® or Utopia of the Seas SM  from Orlando and maybe even add on a day at a theme park before heading home. Trying to save money? Allure of the Seas® and   Independence of the Seas® offer great bang for your buck.

If the flight routes work better for you, choose a sailing out of Miami on Allure of the Seas®, Freedom of the Seas® or Independence of the Seas® or out of Fort Lauderdale on  Oasis of the Seas®, Liberty of the Seas® , Rhapsody of the Seas® or Symphony of the Seas®. If you want to really indulge, Symphony of the Seas®  is home to The Ultimate Family Suite, a decadent two-story stateroom that has a hot tub on the balcony and a slide between the two floors.

Searching for long weekend vacation ideas for travel with small kids who aren't in school yet or can easily miss a day or two? You've got plenty of choices if you're sailing from Florida. The five-night western Caribbean cruise on offer from Miami on Oasis of the Seas®  is a good bet for families seeking long stretches of sand and palm trees. This sailing calls on the beaches of Falmouth, Jamaica (home to river tubing and hikes to waterfalls as well as sun-kissed shores) and Labadee (a Royal Caribbean private destination, where the beaches are perfect for young sun worshipers to build their first sandcastles). Onboard, families can hit the waterslides together — then share stories of their day over St. Louis-style spare ribs at Portside BBQ SM  or carnitas tacos at El Loco Fresh ® .

If you're traveling with older kids who have time off for holidays or can afford to be out of school for a few days, you should consider a four- or five-night cruise, potentially from Orlando on Voyager of the Seas® . Choose a sailing to the eastern Caribbean on this ship, and older kids can take advantage of hiking and horseback riding in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Alternatively, on a cruise from Tampa on Serenade of the Seas®  to the western Caribbean, Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula — with its impressive Maya ruins — might make history lovers out of even the most indifferent teens.

If you're sailing with high school or college students who are academically focused, you'll be pleased to learn that all Royal Caribbean cruise ships offer fast Wi-Fi packages, which means they can access assignments, take remote tests and even participate in class via Zoom if necessary. This allows you to indulge in one of the longer weekend cruises from Florida without your child falling behind in school.

Weekend Cruises Out Of Florida For Singles

Aerial view of Key West

One of the best parts about being a solo traveler is flexibility. For example, if search for "last-minute vacation deals this weekend," chances are good that you'll be able to take advantage of any great rates that fit your personal schedule, without having to factor other people in. Living in the era of remote work (and fast onboard Wi-Fi) increases your freedom: You can often stretch a "weekend" to four or even five days, unlocking a larger number of sailing options, whether you cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa or Orlando. For travelers who like to meet new people, there's always that option on a cruise. One tip to remember: Whatever ship you choose, ask the maître d' in the main dining room on the first day to seat you with other solo travelers to help you make connections straightaway.

With that in mind, why not go the more indulgent route and treat yourself to a five-night sailing? Serenade of the Seas®  sails from Tampa to Cozumel and Costa Maya, both of which are in Mexico.

On six-night sailings on Adventure of the Seas®  out of Orlando, you can visit Puerto Plata, which you can think of as your gateway to the merengue, beans and rice and golden strands of sand in the Dominican Republic.

And, on five-night western Caribbean cruises out of Tampa on Radiance of the Seas® , Mexico will be a highlight. While some solo travelers stay in Cozumel — snorkeling, scuba diving or seeking out tacos and piña coladas — others head farther afield to see the awe-inspiring ruins of Chichén Itzá or the decadently relaxing eco-chic spas of Tulum, for example. Onboard, you can unwind after dinner in the English-style pub or the Champagne bar, depending on your preference. Whatever you choose to do, it's a joy to base the decision entirely on your own interests when you set sail as a solo traveler.

12 Boondocking Locations and Free Campsites in Florida

boondocking in florida

Despite being one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, Florida doesn’t appear on many boondocking lists. Perhaps it's because so many travelers associate Florida with big cities like Miami, Jacksonville, and Tampa. However, all of those urban areas are on the coast, leaving Florida’s interior mostly untouched and available for camping.

The Sunshine State is also home to the third-largest national park in the Lower 48, Everglades National Park . Much of the park is only accessible by boat — perfect for adventurous boondockers like yourself who want to go primitive camping off the beaten path.

Can I Go Boondocking in Florida?

Boondocking in Florida is somewhat more difficult than camping in the western states , where BLM and National Forest land are plentiful. A full 29% of the state is wetlands , which isn’t necessarily the best place for parking your RV. However, many of the best spots for boondocking in Florida are in areas called Water District Management Areas, where you can camp for up to six nights.

So don’t be discouraged, there are still quite a few places to set up camp and many of them are close to the Sunshine State’s best attractions.

Top Camping Locations for Boondocking in Florida

Most people think of Florida as a beachy paradise, but your best dry camping options are found further inland, where lush forests and glistening lakes dominate. Explore awesome locations for boondocking in Florida below!

Cruise-America-Photo-Collage_e.jpg

Pine Creek Landing

This campground is less than an hour from Tallahassee in the Florida Panhandle. Both developed and dispersed campsites are available and neither provide hookups.

Nearby Activities: Paddle the Ochlockonee River. A boat ramp is available at the campsite.

More information: Pine Creek Landing

Mack Landing

Also near the Ochlockonee River, sites have no hookups but there is a vault toilet, and the campground doesn’t get as many visitors as some of the other boondocking locations in the area. It’s very quiet and has excellent river access.

Nearby Activities: This is a popular place to camp during the hunting season and for those wanting to kayak on the Ochlockonee River.

More Information: Mack Landing

Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area

Less than an hour south of Orlando, Three Lakes WMA is a small, rustic campground with just a few sites for hunters and birdwatchers. There are several lakes close by, including Lake Kissimmee, Jackson, and Marian that are great for fishing.

Nearby Activities: The WMA is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail , and is considered one of the best places for birdwatching in the state.

More Information: Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area

Picayune Strand State Forest

This state forest is just minutes from the city of Naples and Big Cypress National Preserve. During the wet season, much of it can be underwater. Campsites have no hookups and no drinking water is available, so you’ll need to come prepared. There are picnic tables and fire rings though.

Nearby Activities: Pack your hiking boots! There’s a 22-mile-long hike within the forest. After that,  you’re just a short drive from some great coastal kayaking.

More Information: Picayune Strand State Forest

Dinner Island Wildlife Management Area

A little over an hour from Fort Myers between Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, this campground is a great place to stay from November to April. During the wet season, the area can flood and become inaccessible.

Nearby Activities: Popular for deer, turkey, hog, and bird hunting. You can also hike along the unimproved roads that crisscross the region.

More Information: Dinner Island Wildlife Management Area

Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area

An hour and a half west of Miami, this beautiful wetlands habitat has room for a few intrepid campers. Most of the WMA is covered in swamp and is best traversed in a kayak, but a few levees of areas large enough to accommodate a smaller RV. While they are still two hours away, this is also one of the closest boondocking sites to the Florida Keys.

Nearby Activities: Big Cypress National Preserve is just south of the WMA and has more accessible hiking than the Everglades. Also, the clubs, beaches, and restaurants of Miami are a short drive away.

More Information: Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area

DuPuis Management Area

Less than an hour’s drive from West Palm Beach, DuPuis Management Area offers some of the most well-known free campsites in Florida. There are 16 primitive campsites in this southern Florida area where boondockers can stay up to 8 days in a row.  Nearby Activities: This camping area features miles of hiking, equestrian trails, and a fishing pond.

More Information: DuPuis Management Area

Lake Panasoffkee

This Wildwood, FL gem allows visitors to boondock for up to 14 days. Lake Panasoffkee is centrally located and is a beautiful place to watch the sunrise. Camping is free, but you must reserve your spot online. Sites have a picnic table and a fire ring for guests to use.

Nearby Activities: Lake Panasoffkee has a fishing lodge and is also close to several major attractions for visitors to enjoy. It is only about an hour or so away from Orlando, so Disney World and Universal Studios are within reach!

More Information: Lake Panasoffkee

Boondocking Locations in The Florida Keys

Cruise-America-Photo-Collage_f.jpg

Camping in the Keys isn’t as easy as it is up north. There’s no public land to speak of, and “No Overnight Parking” signs are ubiquitous. The urban sprawl of Miami on Florida’s southern tip also prevents you from boondocking anywhere close to the Keys. Your best bet for boondocking in the Florida Keys is to reserve a site with no hookups at a developed RV park.

Curry Hammock State Park

Located near Marathon, about halfway down the Overseas Highway between Key Largo and Key West, Curry Hammock State Park is one of your best options for boondocking on the islands. Sites have electrical hookups, but no water or sewer, which helps to keep its fee lower than most of the campgrounds on the Keys.

Nearby Activities: There’s a sandy beach inside the park that’s popular with kitesurfers, along with a nature trail and a boat launch where you can start your exploration of the mangrove forests.

More Information: Curry Hammock State Park

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge

Big Pine is one of the Key’s nicer RV parks and it’s only thirty miles from Key West. However, those looking to boondock the Florida Keys can stay in the rustic camping area, which has no hookups, a picnic table, and drinking water. Being such a developed RV park, it’s not the typical boondocking experience, but you can’t beat the price compared to some of the other island RV parks.

Nearby Activities: Key West is only a little over half an hour away and is a snorkeler’s and diver’s paradise, with spectacular reefs and wildlife, just steps from the beach. From Key West, you can also catch a ferry out to Dry Tortugas National Park.

More Information: Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge

Situated near the beginning of the Overseas Highway in Key Largo, this campground is perfect for RV travelers wanting to stick close to Miami. Sites have electrical, water, and sewer hookups and are priced far lower than most of the campgrounds on the Keys. Visit the website for information including rates, photos, and amenities.

Nearby Activities: Blackwater Sound has powerboat, jet skis, and kayak rentals available.

More Information: Kings Kamp

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Also in Key Largo, the state park covers almost twenty-five miles of coral reef and its visitors center features a massive aquarium filled with native aquatic life. Campsites have electrical, water, and sewer hookups, but the rustic setting is still appealing for boondockers.

Nearby Activities: Snorkeling and scuba diving the nearby reef are the most popular activities, but you can also take a glass-bottom boat tour if you’d like to stay dry while exploring them.

5 Tips for RV Boondocking in Florida

shutterstock_96133076.jpg

Warm weather, sunshine, and a tourist-friendly culture make Florida an excellent stop for RV boondockers like yourself. However, there are a few things to think about when camping in the Sunshine State.

Check Your Park’s Age Restrictions. Florida has a large retired population and many of the parks require at least one camper in the group to be over the age of 55.

Reduce Waste. Florida gets more tourists than just about any other state. Don’t just pack out your trash, make less of it while boondocking in Florida.

Prepare for Insects. Florida’s wetlands are the ideal habitat for all sorts of biting and stinging insects. Bring your repellant of choice and use it liberally.

Explore the Outdoors. The state has some of the most unique outdoor spaces in the Lower 48 like the Everglades swamps, the thousand miles long Florida Trail or kayaking along the beaches of St. Petersburg. Florida is for adventure lovers .

Carry a Detailed Map. Not all of the sites available for boondocking in Florida are well-marked. An accurate map is essential for keeping you within the boundaries of the Forest Service area or Water Management District.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

I've Lived in Florida for 27 Years — and These Are the Best State Parks to Visit

A local's guide to the best and most beautiful state parks in Florida.

cruise in florida keys

DydoDellaMura/Getty Images

Ever since I first came to Florida from the northeast in the late 1990s, I’ve been doing my best to get to know as many of the gorgeous state parks here as possible. And while Florida's 11 national parks — including Everglades National Park , Canaveral National Seashore, and Dry Tortugas National Park — tend to be the heavier tourism hitters, locals like me know its 175 state parks cover similarly gorgeous ground, with everything from freshwater springs and waterfalls to rare dune lakes and cave systems to explore.

I’ve spent moonlit winter nights under majestic oaks and cypress trees along the Santa Fe River at O’Leno State Park, thrown on a scuba tank to go diving with red-bellied turtles and giant gar fish in the crystal-clear waters of Rainbow Springs State Park, and camped on the sand within a couple yards of the water at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.

Read on for 10 of my favorite Florida state parks — and the best ways to experience them on your next visit, too.

Rainbow Springs State Park, Dunnellon

David Radzieta/Getty Images

Florida is brimming with freshwater springs, with more than 1,000 of the jewel-toned beauties scattered around the state. And while I hesitate to pick a favorite, Rainbow Springs State Park in north central Florida rises to the top. I love packing a picnic and sitting on the sloping shores surrounding the spring head before taking the cold plunge and walking the trails with family and friends. You can camp along the Rainbow River, accessed via a separate entrance nearby. This is also the best launching point for drift scuba diving outings or snorkeling in Rainbow River away from the crowds. For a luxury stay within a 30-minute drive of the park, consider The Equestrian Hotel in Ocala , an $800-million property devoted to all things equine and set in Florida’s stunning horse country.

Bahia Honda State Park, Florida Keys

XXX/Getty Images

It’s not easy to score a waterfront campsite at this popular state park on Big Pine Key, but even if you just swing through for the day, you’re in for a treat. Bahia Honda State Park is idyllic for snorkeling in clear, shallow waters atop grassy flats where you might spot juvenile reef fish and passing rays. It has some of the best natural beaches in the Florida Keys , too. You can rent kayaks and snorkeling gear on site, as well as book snorkeling trips to the bountiful reefs just offshore within Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. My favorite thing to do here at sunset is follow the park’s lone nature trail from the southwest end of the island to the top of the old Bahia Honda Bridge. It’s the perfect place to scout fish, turtles, and dolphins frolicking in the clear waters while watching the sky turn all shades of pretty pastels.

Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring

I recently visited this wild state park in Sebring, Florida, with my family, and was amazed by how it felt like a mini Everglades, but was only two hours inland from my home in Tampa. I was also surprised to learn that Highlands Hammock State Park is home to more rare and endemic species than any park in the entire state, including Florida black bears, American alligators, and Florida panthers. One of Florida’s oldest state parks, it dates to 1931, when it was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There’s a great on-site museum that delves into that history and shows the conditions in which workers lived, worked, and played back then. We loved riding the tram into the most alligator-ridden reaches of the park and strolling through an old-growth cypress swamp atop an elevated boardwalk trail. Whatever you do, don’t miss a birding hike with ranger Blake, if it’s on offer the day you visit. Blake grew up in this area and has owls calling back to him, plus you'll spot things you’d never see on your own.

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, Wakulla Springs

NetaDegany/Getty Images

I first visited this glorious state park, about 15 miles south of Tallahassee in Florida’s Panhandle, as a college kid in town to party at Florida State University during a football weekend. Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park was the first place I ever saw manatees, and the ancient cypress swamp always proves to be a fruitful place to scout alligators. There are a ton of cool ways to experience this park, whether you opt for a guided jungle cruise on a glass-bottom riverboat, go swimming in the gin-clear waters at the spring head, or spend the night at the historic Lodge at Wakulla Springs . The latter — home to the world’s longest-known marble bar, stretching some 70 feet — dates to the 1930s.

Sebastian Inlet State Park, Melbourne Beach

carcar797/Getty Images

Straddling Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach, Sebastian Inlet State Park is a haven for anyone who likes to fish, surf, or simply stroll the sand for miles. Many moons ago, when I dated a Florida surfer boy, we’d come here to camp at nearby Long Point Park , all the better to be up for dawn patrol when the waves were cranking just offshore from Sebastian (First Peak is considered the best surf break here, but there are gentler options for beginners, too). These days, I visit with my kids to walk the length of the pier to see what anglers are reeling in and pop into the fascinating McLarty Treasure Museum to ogle finds that have washed ashore from the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet of galleons that met its demise here during a hurricane (much of the loot is still buried in the sand somewhere offshore).

Grayton Beach State Park, Santa Rosa Beach

Jacob Boomsma/Getty Images

Along with Madagascar, New Zealand, and Oregon, a small stretch of the Florida Panhandle in Walton County is one of the only places in the world where you can find coastal dune lakes — rare geographical features of shallow water nestled into sand dune ecosystems. You can see some of the most beautiful examples of these at Grayton Beach State Park , including Western Lake, where it’s possible to rent a kayak or standup paddleboard to glide atop waters as smooth as glass. Stay in one of the park’s cozy cabins, secreted among the tall pines, or nab one of the 59 campsites that put some of Florida’s most pristine white-sand beaches at your doorstep. Other park highlights include a 4.5-mile hiking and biking trail that meanders through a forest home to Florida black bears, gray foxes, and white-tailed deer.

Myakka River State Park, Sarasota

LagunaticPhoto/Getty Images

East of Sarasota, along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Myakka River State Park is a real surprise that’s home to wetlands, prairies blanketed with wildflowers come autumn, and forests dense with palms and live oaks. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of how scenic this state is. Birders like me flock to the Birdwalk, a boardwalk that winds through hammock environments to a floodplain marsh where you might hear ospreys calling overhead and spot roseate spoonbills and herons foraging the shallows for something to eat. My kids love adventuring down the Myakka Canopy Walkway, which is raised 25 feet above the ground. You can visit the park on tram and boat tours, too, making it perfect for a multigenerational day trip from nearby cities like Sarasota and Tampa .

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

Within minutes of downtown Miami, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park promises sandy beaches with no development, as well as bayside hideaways for enjoying sunset drinks, like family-owned and operated bar The Cleat (my favorite spot to sip a watermelon sangria fronting No Name Harbor). When you’re not kicking back on the beach, you can rent a bike to pedal a 1.5-mile paved pathway in the park, hike nature trails through mangrove wetlands, or grill at a picnic pavilion overlooking Biscayne Bay. This park is also known for the historic 1825 Cape Florida Lighthouse, which you can tour several days a week during guided visits.

Ravine Gardens State Park, Palatka

cjmckendry/Getty Images

I was floored by this fascinating state park in the north Florida town of Palatka, near Jacksonville, when I happened upon it during a road trip earlier this year. The best time to visit Ravine Gardens State Park is from January through March, when more than 18 types of azaleas come into peak bloom — they’re at the heart of gardens formed within the natural ravines here back in 1933 (there’s even an annual Azalea Festival held the first week of March). The park’s most unique geological formations are two “steephead ravines,” which are naturally cut 120 feet into the earth and formed by erosion. You can explore the park along a paved road (driving, biking, or walking), or opt to detour along trails that follow suspension bridges and stone staircases down to a spring-fed creek.

Florida Caverns State Park, Marianna

Visit Florida

Drive about one hour north of Panama City to reach the only Florida state park where you can head underground to explore caves and caverns without a scuba diving tank. Guided tours take visitors into large underground spaces within the limestone cave system to ogle stalactites and stalagmites illuminated for a dazzling effect. You’ll descend 35 steps to tour a dozen different rooms, within which your guide might point out interesting subterranean denizens, like cave crickets, bats, and salamanders. When you emerge from the cave, it’s into a beautiful hardwood forest, providing an incredible contrast between the up-top and down-below Florida worlds.

Commentary | Banning privately owned TikTok does nothing for national security while costing American jobs | Opinion

For all the problems legislative attempts to prohibit specific goods and services have caused over the years, it seems Congress just can’t shake its affinity for this favored method of market control. They’re at it again, and for the first time in history, it’s an app that’s on the chopping block.

Congressional lawmakers are trying to ban TikTok. On March 13, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R.7521 , the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” by a bipartisan vote of 352-65. The bill would make it unlawful to distribute, maintain, update or otherwise host a foreign-adversary controlled application within the United States borders, land and maritime, as well as territories. This bill is now waiting in the Senate, setting up a critical and monumental vote, with President Joe Biden waiting in the wings to sign it into law .

The People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are foreign adversaries to the United States’ interests. That is not up for debate; it is a fact.

Addison J. Hosner is a Florida native and attorney currently living in Washington, D.C., who writes and works for Young Voices. (courtesy, Addison Hosner)

But congressional concerns over the national security threat posed by TikTok are misleading. For one thing, it’s inaccurate to claim the app largely used by America’s youth to share cat videos, dances and cooking recipes is directly involved with the CCP. Yes, TikTok parent company ByteDance Ltd. is headquartered in Beijing, but on paper at least, the company is not owned or controlled by the CCP.

According to a release by TikTok last April, 60% of ByteDance “is beneficially owned by global institutional investors such as Carlyle Group, General Atlantic and Susquehanna International Group,” with about 20% owned by “ByteDance employees around the world” and the rest owned by its founder, Zhang Yiming , who is a private individual and is not part of any government entity.

Further, TikTok CEO Shou Chew adamantly testified before Congress last March that ByteDance is not an agent of China or of any other country. In fact, it would appear that, if anything, ByteDance has a tenuous relationship with the CCP as they have been met with prior resistance by having their most popular app in China, Neihan Duanzi, shut down by the Chinese government in 2018 for butting up against the CCP’s censorship laws.

Concerns over data collection of the estimated 150 million to 170 million U.S.-based TikTok users are understandable, until you realize that, since June 2022 , 100% of all U.S. TikTok user traffic and data is routed through the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, which is based in Texas and contained entirely within the United States. This data is managed by TikTok U.S. Data Security with extensive transparency. None of the data is routed to China.

In addition, TikTok announced at that time that all data collected prior to June 2022 was to be systematically deleted from their data centers located in Virginia and Singapore. To summarize: All data from TikTok since June 2022 has been held in custodial data centers in the United States, and all prior data has been deleted or is in the process of being deleted. Which leads us back to the question: Where is the national security threat that is driving this bill?

Barring an unforeseen change in attitude toward TikTok by Congress, the bill lays out one of two scenarios for the embattled social media platform. The first and the least desirable outcome, TikTok packs up it’s things and leaves the U.S. market, effectively causing around 7,000 Americans to lose their jobs, $24.2 billion in U.S. GDP to evaporate, and a decline of $14.7 billion in small business revenue — these are just the economic measurables; it doesn’t touch the social impact to the hundreds of millions who use the platform for personal and professional exposure. The second scenario is a forced qualified divestiture to a non-foreign adversary party within 180 days of the bill’s signage into law — aka a forced sale. TikTok U.S. valuation sits at approximately $60 billion . Finding a buyer willing and able to take on the operation of TikTok will be difficult. The opportunity will be limited to a select few parties. If data collection is truly the concern here, how would consolidating data to any of the other social media platforms who may be interested in buying help?

Banning foreign media is what authoritarian regimes like China, North Korea and Russia do. It’s undemocratic censorship — an affront to free expression. Yet here we are as a free nation about to do just that.

If there was a clear and present national security threat, Congress might have a good case for a ban. But that’s simply not true. If TikTok is such a threat, then why does Biden have an account ? As it stands, the current narrative is reminiscent of the Red Scare of the 1950s.

The U.S. Senate holds the keys to one of the most influential votes in recent history. The future of digital autonomy hangs in the balance. Time is ticking and more is at risk than just dance videos or sharing memes; livelihoods are at stake, and the world is watching to see if the “Land of the Free” takes yet another step towards the censorship of free expression.

Addison J. Hosner is a Florida attorney and the current COO of Young Voices based in Washington, D.C. He does not have, and has never had, a TikTok account.
