Group Transportation to the Port of Miami

Taking a cruise is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family. Enjoy views of the water, chow down on endless food and drinks, attend entertaining shows on board, and have fun exploring your destination city. Before you can do all that though, you’ll have to get to the port.

The Port of Miami is the busiest port in the world (yep, you read that right), which can make getting there a pain for large groups. You’ll have to find several parking spots for your caravan at the usually crowded garages and lots. The cost and frustration of driving can be easily avoided with a private cruise transfer service. GOGO Charters works with bus operators and professional drivers across South Florida to provide travelers with simple transportation solutions. Ride to the port in a comfortable minibus with space for your entire group and all your luggage.

Easy Cruise Transfers Across Miami

GOGO Charters offers personalized transportation services for groups coming from anywhere in Miami. Locals can hop on a charter bus directly from home or from a designated group meetup location. Out-of-towners flying into Miami International or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International can book a transfer service from the airport or their hotel to the cruise terminal. We’ll work with your group’s itinerary to make sure your ride to the port is quick and simple.

Avoid Costly Parking Fees

Free parking near the Port of Miami is a rare sight to see. Groups planning to cruise out of the port are likely going to have to pay a steep daily rate to park on-site. If you have a big group with several cars, your parking situation can get tricky and costly. Your vehicles will also likely be left unmonitored (though some lots may have security and an attendant) throughout your trip, which can understandably make some travelers uncomfortable. Renting a charter bus is a secure mode of transportation to and from the cruise port. Leave your personal vehicles at home and sit back in reclining seats while a private driver shuttles you to the port.

Ride and Relax Before Your Trip

If you choose to drive to the Port of Miami, you’ll inevitably be left rubbing your temples after dealing with the city’s traffic. Arriving at your cruise stressed and flustered after taking on traffic and corralling your group sounds like a nightmare. Port of Miami Hotels with Cruise Parking

A great way to save money on your vacation is to stay at one of these Miami hotels with cruise parking and shuttle to the Port of Miami. You’ve already taken steps to save money by driving to Miami rather than flying. But you don’t want to overspend on parking or transportation to the port. Fortunately, there are several hotels that also offer cruise parking that won’t break the bank.

Parking at the Port of Miami

Before we start discussing Miami Park and Cruise hotels, we should point out that there is parking available at the Port of Miami . The Port of Miami is the largest cruise port in the world, and they have plenty of parking spaces to handle their volume. Rates are approximately $22 USD per night.

Hint: You might qualify for free cruise parking if you’re a disabled veteran and have a disabled veteran’s license plate.

Miami Hotels with Cruise Parking and Shuttle

An affordable option for many cruisers is to book a park and cruise hotel in Miami rather than using a dedicated long-term parking lot. Each of these Miami hotels offers a room rate that includes parking for the duration of your cruise. And to make the deal even sweeter, all 5 of these hotels have a free shuttle to the Miami cruise port and a free breakfast.

1. Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Airport South – Blue Lagoon

South Beach Nightlife

To truly experience the culture of Miami, you should explore the city at night. Many of Miami’s most popular nightclubs are in South Beach, located on the tip of Miami Beach. The white-sand coastline provides a gorgeous setting for the hip clubs, restaurants, and hotels that have made Miami one of the hottest nightclub areas in the world.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

If you’re a beach lover, head to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It’s located on Key Biscayne and has some of America’s most beautiful beaches, along with hiking trails that lead to views of Miami’s downtown skyline. A big draw for travelers to the park is the historic lighthouse, where you can take a tour with a guide on select days of the week.

Little Havana

Little Havana is the epicenter of Cuban culture in Miami. A walk down Calle Ocho will give you a good taste of all that Little Havana has to offer, from cuisine to bars and souvenirs. Visit El Credito Cigar Factory, where you can see how they roll cigars in Cuba. If you really want to experience the Latin culture in Little Havana, time your cruise from Miami so you can be in Miami before or after your sailing on the last Friday of the month. On this day each month, a street party is held in Little Havana called Viernes Cultural that features an array of music performers, dancers, Cuban cuisine, and theater performances.

Learn More About Miami Shore Excursions

Top things to do in miami, explore everglades national park.

Miami is located close to Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to fully comprehend the rich nature and wildlife of the Everglades is to take an airboat tour with a knowledgeable guide who will tell you about the history of the Everglades and point out its most popular feature: the many alligators that call it home. When the guide starts telling you about some of the stories surrounding these prehistoric looking creatures, we won’t blame you if you scoot a little bit farther from the edge of the boat.

Walk Around Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Due to its wet, humid climate, gardens in Miami are able to prosper into lush, beautiful landscapes. One of the highlights of the Miami garden scene is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, where you’ll find an Italian-style mansion surrounded by manicured gardens adorned with lovely sculptures and a view of sparkling Biscayne Bay.

See Animals at Zoo Miami

A popular attraction in Miami for families is Zoo Miami, where you can see over 3,000 animal species. Kids have a chance to feed giraffes, rhinos, and camels, as well as play in the splash pads. Rent a Safari Cycle to navigate the expansive grounds of the zoo.

Pretend You’re Under the Sea at Miami Seaquarium

Miami Seaquarium is another fun outing in Miami that is centered around animals, only here you’ll see ocean mammals. The Seaquarium features a variety of species, including bottlenose dolphins, crocodiles, and sea lions. Children will love the fact that there’s an onsite play structure (the Salty’s Pirate Playground) and a touch pool where they can feel the silky skin of stingrays. Visitors of all ages will be wowed by the Sea Trek Reef Encounter, an underwater walking path through the aquarium.

What should I eat in Miami?

Miami’s food scene is a fusion of international flavors, but you’ll find a particular Latin flair going through many of the dishes. While in Miami, there are some dishes that stand out from the rest, and five you should try are:

Arepas: This popular South American food item is also popular in Miami. It infuses cheese into a flattened, folded pastry, which is then cooked until the dough turns golden.

Ceviche: With the close proximity to the sea, you can find a variety of ceviche in Miami, which typically mixes cold seafood with any number of ingredients from fruit to salsa.

Chicharrones: If you’re a meat-lover, you can’t miss trying chicharrones in Miami, which are pork skins that are deep-fried and have a salty aftertaste.

Florida Stone Crab: If you’re visiting between October and March, try the local seafood delicacy of stone crab, served chilled on ice. The meat of the stone crab claw is known for its tenderness and hint of sweetness.

Cuban Sandwich: This iconic Miami dish is a sandwich made with Cuban bread. In between the slices of bread, you’ll find a pile of delicious ingredients like roasted pork, baked ham, gooey Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and yellow mustard.

When it comes to drinks, you’ll likely be able to find your favorite libation at one of the many bars and nightclubs lining the streets of Miami Beach. However, if you want to try a local specialty, look for a mojito or a Miami Vice.

What is the culture and history of Miami?

The culture of Miami has been largely influenced by the influx of immigrants to the city over the past 80 years, giving it an intriguing multicultural scene that extends to the arts, music, beach, and nightlife. You can find Latin flair throughout the city before departing on one of our cruises from Miami, along with a distinctly Caribbean vibe, especially when you’re in the Little Havana and Little Haiti areas of the city. Beach bars intermingle with nightclubs, and the laidback lifestyle mixed with the ritzy nightclubs that attract the rich and famous from all around the world create an interesting dichotomy.

Where can I go shopping near the Miami cruise port?

It’s not hard to find places to shop in Miami, but if there’s a particular type of shop you’re after, certain areas of the city are best. The Design District of Miami is known for its art galleries and high-end boutiques.

For clothing, you’ll find designer boutiques at Bal Harbor, and more clothing stores along Collins Avenue or Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. You’ll also find some shopping with an international flair in Little Havana or along historic Española Way in Miami Beach.

For jewelry and local crafts plus more fashion and trinkets, the Miami Fair Trade Marketplace is a great place to shop both for the variety and because you can be assured that souvenirs were made in fair and safe working conditions.

For a fun shopping mall experience with a quintessential Miami vibe, head to Bayside Marketplace. This mall has open-air walkways leading to over 100 shops. At this mall, you’ll also find restaurants and bars, street performers and live music, and even a launchpad for boat tours along the Miami coastline.

Bargain shoppers who love a great deal on luxury finds will enjoy a day of shopping at Dolphin Mall, which is an outlet mall located close to Miami International Airport.

How can I get around Miami?

Public Transport

You have four main options for public transportation in Miami: the Metrobus, the Metrorail, the Metromover, and the trolley. The Metrobus is a bus system that runs all around the Greater Miami area, and the Metrorail runs from the north to the south end of Miami with stops in downtown.

The free Metromover covers downtown Miami and Brickell. It is a fully automated shuttle that runs on electricity. The Metromover also connects with the Metrorail and Metrobus at downtown stations. For traveling around Miami and Miami Beach, trolleys offer free services with many routes available.

For private transportation, taxis and rideshares are popular ways to get around Miami. Make sure you’re hailing a licensed taxi, which should have written that it’s a taxi cab on the side of the car and display the license for the driver and the taxi’s rate card inside the vehicle.

Miami International Airport (MIA)

If you’re embarking on one of our cruises from Miami and you don’t live within driving distance to the port, there’s a good chance you’re flying into Miami International Airport (MIA). Upon landing, you can get local information at the airport, where you’ll also find a bank, post office, pharmacy, baggage storage, ATM, and car rental companies.

If you’re flying in the night before your cruise (which we recommend to accommodate for possible flight delays), check with your hotel if they offer a shuttle from the airport. Otherwise, you have plenty of other options, including a 24-hour Super Shuttle van service, taxis, and buses. If you’re going straight to the cruise port from MIA, you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal or take the cruise shuttle bus that you can purchase tickets for through Celebrity Cruises.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The currency accepted in Miami is the U.S. dollar, and you’ll be able to find ATMs dispensing U.S. dollars all over the city. Tipping is very common and expected in Miami, especially in restaurants, bars, and taxis. A common tip for restaurants, taxis, and most other services is 15% to 20% of the total amount.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's 2 largest cruise ships. They were shockingly similar for the $1,000 difference

  • Royal Caribbean operates many of the cruise industry's biggest ships.
  • Icon of the Seas  launched in January, dethroning its predecessor, Wonder of the Seas, as the world's largest.
  • Here's how the two mega-ships compare in size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Insider Today

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

cruise shuttle miami

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

cruise shuttle miami

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

cruise shuttle miami

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

cruise shuttle miami

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

cruise shuttle miami

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

cruise shuttle miami

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

cruise shuttle miami

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

cruise shuttle miami

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

cruise shuttle miami

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

cruise shuttle miami

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

cruise shuttle miami

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

cruise shuttle miami

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

cruise shuttle miami

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

cruise shuttle miami

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

cruise shuttle miami

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

cruise shuttle miami

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.

How to Get From the Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) to the Miami Cruise Port

Flying into the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and not sure how to get the Port of Miami? We recommend taking Uber or Lyft, as it’s the best combination of cost and convenience . That said, you do have multiple options.

Miami skyline from a cruise ship.

It’s good news for cruise passengers that the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area has multiple airports that you can use. That gives you the ability to shop flights to different airports, often finding a route that gives you a cheaper price or better schedule.

That said, there’s no question that flying into Miami International Airport is the most convenient option if you are sailing from the Port of Miami. The airport is just about 10 miles away. There are also a number of ways to get from Miami International (MIA) to the cruise port .

But if you can find a cheaper deal flying into Fort Lauderdale — or if they have better flight times for you — then you can still make it to the port easily.

In This Article...

Transportation From the Fort Lauderdale Airport and the Port of Miami

The Fort Lauderdale airport is about 25 miles north of the Port of Miami. No matter what mode of transportation you take, expect the ride to take at least 45 minutes — sometimes longer given South Florida’s notorious traffic.

The good news is that many cruises depart on the weekend when traffic should be lighter. That means it is normally not too bad for many cruise passengers. If you are flying in the day of your cruise, then we’d suggest a flight that arrives at least two hours before your embarkation time to give you plenty of leeway to make it to the port on time.

With cruising and tourism being such big business in the region, there are plenty of ways for you to get you from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise terminal. We go into details of each below, but this table should give you an idea of their estimated prices:

Uber/Lyft (Recommended; $55-$60)

A sign for the ride pickup area at Fort Lauderdale airport.

If you are traveling with two or more people, then using a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft is usually your best option on getting from the Fort Lauderdale airport to Miami. These services offer pickup at the airport in designated pickup areas located between terminals and provide service directly to the Port of Miami (or anywhere else in the area you want to go, such as hotels).

If you’ve never used a rideshare service, they are simple. You download Uber or Lyft to your smartphone. Once downloaded, you can set up your account in the app. Your account is tied to a credit card, so no money changes hands — it’s all taken care of through the app.

When you arrive in Fort Lauderdale, simply walk to the pick-up area in between terminals, pull up Uber or Lyft, and request a ride. It normally takes less than 5 minutes for your car to arrive but during busy times, the wait can be longer. We’ve waited up to 15-20 minutes before.

The cost of an Uber or Lyft is estimated at $55-$60 each way, for up to four people (pricing is based per car, not per person) . Larger vehicles are also available for a higher price.

We’ve personally used this method to get back and forth between the airport and cruise port. It was convenient, quick, and relatively inexpensive given the distance.

Taxis ($85-$100)

Taxis are another option from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami cruise port, however, they are usually more expensive than using a rideshare like Uber and Lyft. The estimated cost is about $85-$100 each way.

While taxi cabs are a more expensive way to the port, if you aren’t comfortable using Uber/Lyft, then cabs are a widely-available option. Once at the airport, simply follow the ground transportation signs to be directed to the area where taxis will be waiting.

The good thing about cabs is that you don’t have to wait on a ride. Simply arrive at the airport, grab a cab, and be on your way.

Shared Shuttle ($25-$40 pp)

If there are lots of people headed from the airport to the cruise port, it makes sense that they can share a shuttle. There are a number of services in the area that provide rides between the airport and cruise ports.

For instance, the GO Airport Shuttle , provides a ride (ranging from smaller cars all the way to a shuttle van) back and forth from the cruise port. These ways to the port are often economical if traveling with a larger group.

Other Shared Shuttles Of course with some many people flying in to head to cruises, there is an industry that revolves around providing a shuttle back and forth. In addition to the GO Airport Shuttle, there are lots of shuttle companies in South Florida. In general, expect to pay between $25-40 per person, each way.

Note that we don’t recommend or suggest against any particular company as we haven’t used them personally. All of the following, however, can give you a good start for your search.

Shuttle Companies: Quick Shuttle , Express Shuttle Miami , South Florida Shuttles

Cruise Line Transfers (~$40 pp)

The cruise lines offer service between the Fort Lauderdale airport and the Port of Miami. The bad news is that they can be pricey and not very flexible (you’re on their schedule, not vice versa). As well, cruise line transfers are offered only on the day of the cruise and can’t make any stops on your way to the port like a taxi or Uber/Lyft may be able to do.

But the good news is that your transportation is taken care of by the cruise line so there isn’t a danger of missing the ship if your transfer arrives late.

For pricing, you’ll want to check your specific cruise line. However, expect it to be more expensive than most other options. For instance, Carnival provides transfers from the Fort Lauderdale to Miami for around $37 per person, each way. Expect other lines to be in that same ballpark.

Public Transportation ($5-$8 pp)

cruise shuttle miami

Want to get to Port of Miami from Fort Lauderdale as cheaply as possible? While it’s not the most convenient route to the port, there is public transportation that will take you from the airport to the cruise port.

All told, expect the trip to take between an hour and a hour-and-a-half, depending on how long you have to wait on transfers. The good news? It will only cost you between $5-8 each way. The bad news is it can take some time and several transfers.

We have full step-by-step details of the route you’ll take here . As a summary, here is the route you will take:

  • FLA-1 Commuter Connector at airport –> Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach for Tri-Rail (Free)
  • Tri-Rail Station –> Metrorail Transfer/Tri-Rail Station ($2.50-$5.00)
  • Metrorail Green Line –> Brickell Station ($2.25)
  • Miami Trolley (Coral Way Route) –> Port of Miami (Free)

While this is an affordable way to get to the ship, we think it might be a bit overwhelming for out-of-towners. For that reason we suggest other modes of transportation.

There’s good news and bad news when it comes to Fort Lauderdale hotels offering cruise shuttles. The good news is that there are a number of hotels near the airport and cruise port with shuttles. The bad news is that few, if any, of the Fort Lauderdale hotels with shuttles offer rides to the Miami cruise port due to the distance.

In other words, if you are sailing from Fort Lauderdale then you have a lot of options of hotels with local shuttles. But if you are flying into Fort Lauderdale to sail from Miami, it’s a better idea to commute into Miami and then stay at a Miami hotel with a cruise port shuttle . You can find dozens of hotel options with shuttles within just a few minutes of the Miami cruise port here .

More a question than a reply.

What mode of transportation would be best for a person in a wheel chair. We need to go from Fort Lauderdale airport to Miami, do an overnight and then on to the Miami cruise port. There will be four of us (only one in a wheelchair )

That would depend on the person and their ability to be transferred in an out of a car. If they can transfer easily, then any mode of transportation would be fine, including things like Uber/Lyft.

That said, we have seen taxi cabs that are accessible. You might want to call a Fort Lauderdale taxi company and explain the situation. You might be able to reserve a ride with them at that time too.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse is impacting cruises and could cause up to $10 million in losses for Carnival

By Caitlin O'Kane

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 10:22 PM EDT / CBS News

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  has impacted cruise travel in Baltimore. Carnival Cruise Line had to temporarily move its Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia, as the Baltimore Harbor has been closed to marine traffic — which could cause up to a $10 million monetary loss for the company.

The company's ship, Carnival Legend, was scheduled to return to Baltimore on  Sunday, March 31, but guests will instead go to Norfolk. There will be a complimentary bus service to get back to Baltimore from that port, Carnival announced on Tuesday . The drive between these cities could be up to five hours long.

The upcoming Carnival Legend cruise on March 31 will depart and return to Norfolk.

"Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. "We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk."

"We will continue to actively monitor the situation and look forward to getting back to Baltimore as soon as possible," a Carnival spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

As for the impact on business, the spokesperson told CBS News the company expects a less than $10 million impact on both adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization as well as its adjusted net income for the full year 2024.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

Cruise Lines International Association , the largest cruise industry trade association, says 12 cruise ships made 115 trips through Baltimore in 2024. And in 2023, about 444,000 cruise passengers moved through the port, the 29th largest in the U.S.

Other cruise companies like Royal Caribbean and American Cruise Lines also have ships that go to Baltimore, however, it is unclear if those lines have been impacted yet. CBS News reached out to several cruise companies for comment.

The bridge collapsed around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday when a cargo ship, called the Dali , lost power and crashed into one of the bridge's columns. The ship made a mayday call ahead of the crash and first responders were able to prevent cars from driving onto the bridge, but eight construction workers  were on the structure pouring concrete.

Two of the construction workers were recovered alive, but the other six were presumed dead on Tuesday. Two bodies were found in a construction vehicle  submerged in the water on Wednesday.

Following the incident, Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and President Biden said the federal government would pay for the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge, which is still sitting in the river, on top of the cargo ship, which had 22 people on board – none of them harmed.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday March 26, 2024, after a support column was struck by a vessel.

Baltimore is the ninth-busiest port in the nation and handled a record 11.7 million tons of cargo last year,  the Associated Press reports. More than 50 shipping and cruise ship companies do business with the port, mainly moving cars, coal, wood, steel, aluminum, home appliances, furniture, sugar and liquefied natural gas.

"For everybody who is buying cars, for everybody who is (buying) farm equipment, we're the largest port in the country that does that," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said . "So this is not just impacting Maryland."

Shipping companies and automakers will likely divert ships heading to Baltimore to other East Coast cities, experts say, according to the AP.

Ships waiting to get into Baltimore were stalled after the incident, with many drifting in the North Atlantic, waiting to be assigned to a new port, according to Windward Maritime, which analyzes maritime data.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge  won't be easy or cheap. "That does not necessarily mean it will take five years to replace, but that tells you what went into that original structure going up," he said. "We need to get a sense of the conditions, of the parts that look ok, to the naked eye, but we just don't know yet, especially in terms of their foundational infrastructure."

Politics | ex-desantis aide had $6.5k a month contract with state attorney bain’s office, taryn fenske also has been ‘helping out’ with public relations at the disney world oversight district.

A former top aide to Gov. Ron DeSantis landed a $6,500-a-month public relations deal with the Orange-Osceola state attorney’s office to handle communications work in the wake of Monique Worrell’s suspension.

Taryn Fenske’s company, TMF Communications , made $26,689 off the contract with State Attorney Andrew Bain, state records show. DeSantis appointed Bain to the post on Aug. 9.

Fenske has deep Tallahassee connections, having served as DeSantis’ communications director. She also worked as a spokeswoman for the Department of Education when it was led by Richard Corcoran, a former GOP House speaker and current president of the New College of Florida in Sarasota.

The contract, which went publicly unnoticed until now, started Aug. 8 and ran for four months when the office was transitioning to new leadership, Jason Gunn, a spokesman for the state attorney, said in an email.

“State Attorney Bain brought this communications agency on board as a very short-term, temporary solution to manage the influx of media inquiries, draft press releases and provide short-term communication strategies and training while the office found a permanent communications director,” Gunn said.

Fenske also struck a deal with the New College of Florida, which is undergoing a conservative overhaul headed by her former boss Corcoran. The college has been paying TMF Communications $15,000-a-month since last July to do marketing and promotional work, the Miami Herald first reported in February.

Most recently, Fenske has been “helping out” at the DeSantis-aligned Disney World oversight district, but she does not have a contract at this time, said Matthew Thomas Oberly, a district spokesman.

The district’s new administrator is Stephanie Kopelousos , another DeSantis ally who served as his legislative affairs director. She’ll earn $400,000 a year in her new role. The five-member, DeSantis-appointed board opted not to interview other candidates, citing Kopelousos’ experience serving as county manager of Clay County and heading the Florida Department of Transportation.

DeSantis recommended her for the job.

Last summer, both Kopelousos and Fenske left the governor’s staff to work on his White House bid, Politico reported in June .

TMF Communications received $90,000 from Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting DeSantis’ presidential run, campaign finance records show .

At the state attorney’s office, TMF Communications’ work included helping to develop a crisis communications plan, editing talking points and press releases and providing news media coaching to the state attorney and other top officials, according to the contract.

DeSantis suspended Worrell, a Democrat, in August and accused her of “refusing to faithfully enforce the laws of Florida.” Worrell fired back, saying the suspension was politically motivated and designed to serve up “red meat” to conservative voters.

Worrell is challenging the suspension in the courts and is running again for state attorney in the November election. In an announcement Tuesday, Bain said he would run as an independent.

Only contractual services above $35,000 need to be competitively procured under state rules, Gunn said.

Ben Wilcox, research director at the government watchdog group Integrity Florida, questioned why outside communications help would be needed “unless you are wanting a particular spin.” Soliciting proposals would help assure the public that its tax dollars are being spent wisely, even if competitive bidding isn’t required by state guidelines, he said.

“It sounds like typical political favoritism,” Wilcox said. “The best way to approach that is to put it out for a bid. Have people bid to provide the services and choose the bid that produces the best result for the best price.”
