" Our trip with Cuban Adventures exceeded all of our expectations. We normally do not travel on group tours but we are so glad we did. We learned so much from the guide about the history and the culture and the local hot spots to go to for food, drink and dancing. Thank you for making our trip to Cuba Amazing! We will definitely be back."

What our clients say

Juliet Nelson

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

The staff at Cubania were very efficient and very professional throughout. Excellent time keeping and very quick to respond to any queries - we would recommend them.

Fantastic knowledge of country, excellent communication, superb organisation/recommendations and brilliant guides/staff. Probably one of our best holidays and certainly the most interesting.

We booked our first bike tour to Cuba through Cubania Travel and have nothing but good to say about their service. The booking process was smooth and everything promised to us was delivered.

What a wonderful trip. Mary and I loved it. Thank you so much to you and Carla for your outstanding organisation. In short, you excelled. Moreover Jorge and Frank were an absolutely brilliant team - world-class and as good as we have ever experienced anywhere in the world.

James Strachan

Incredible knowledge and guide from Cubania

Simone O'Reilly

Good trip, and a lot more tiring than you'd think in the heat... lots to see and a very varied and different environment. Needed more snacks really at the stops is my only suggestion, but there was plenty of water. The guide and his crew were very good.

I did a guided ebike tour with Cubania travelling out of Havana to the gorgeous Cuban countryside and down to the south coast. The guide was great fun and the whole trip was organised seamlessly. Loved riding round the back roads and up a few hills with an electronic boost!

Claire Boobbyer

If you are looking to get a glimpse of the real Cuba, cycling through it with an expert guide is the way to do it. I couldn't recommend Cubania tours more.

Hannah Goodwin

I took a group of pals to Cuba and Cubania organised the whole trip. Right through from pre-planning to conclusion, it went really well and it was FUN as well as a success. Happy Travellers. Thank you everyone at Cubania, well done!

Excellent, tailored to our individual wishes. Advice provided as requested.

Andrew Heald

We loved the itinerary that Cubania put together for our trip to Cuba. Our guide and driver were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We discovered so much about Cuba's history and saw a lot of beautiful places. A real mixture of city culture and stunning countryside plus a very relaxed couple of days on Cayo Levisa.

Cuba Travel

Cuba Travel

Cuba tours beyond the beach.

The island of Cuba – with its vibrant rhythms, varied landscape, and rich heritage of literature and dance – wins over many travellers, who return again and again. Cuba's travel opportunities differ from those in other Latin American countries, and though the country has been a magnet for sun-seeking tourists for some time, it is only slowly opening up to less-traditional travel. A Cuba trip provides an opportunity to explore this uniquely beautiful and captivating land and meet its friendly and open people.

ENJOY THE LOCAL LIFESTYLE!

Cuba has been voted most picturesque country in the world, no wonder it is a popular destination for travelers world wide. While the cars, architecture and landscapes are amazing, it’s the Cuban people that provide the magical vibe!

We choose to stay at local Casas, they not only provides us with a much more intimate experience as we interact and engage with local families each day, but it is one of the ways where we can make sure that the money we spend in Cuba goes to the families that need it.

If anyone is considering a trip to Cuba my wife and I would wholeheartedly recommend Simply Cuba Tours. Orsolya Bartalis, the owner, was able to answer all our questions, remove any misgivings we may have had and guided us through the formalities before our departure. The tour itself was interesting and varied and provided an excellent introduction to this fascinating and often misunderstood country. Staying in private homes or small b&bs is a great way to have contact with the locals. Our guide/driver was very knowledgeable – not only about the history but also on the flora and fauna.  Ten out of ten to everyone.

Yoanis was fantastic because he seemed as much just a local as a guide. Spending time with him just felt like I was spending time in Cuba with Cubans – while he had so much knowledge, what impressed me more was his ability to allow me to immerse myself into Cuban life. He knew all the answers to my questions, but more than that, I felt that by spending time with him, I was able to truly understand what it is to be Cuban.

Our driver was fantastic! On time and very courteous. Thank you so much for all your help Will definitely recommend you to our friends and family travelling to Cuba.

We went on a birding photography tour with Orsolya and Yoanis (the owners) and a few other travellers that were in our group and it was such an incredible experience. My wife and I are Canadians and we have never been to Cuba before and our trip itinerary was organized perfectly where we got to stay at lovely home stays to support the locals and we got to go to all of the hidden spots to find endemic bird species. Highly recommend joining Simply Cuba Tours on any of their adventures. I will be back to do their Scuba diving tour with underwater photography very soon. It was really nice to see how they are giving back to the locals and creating really fun small group experiences.

We had an absolutely delightful time! Our guide, Yunior was simply amazing. The casas we stayed at were all fantastic. The families we stayed with were lovely and the breakfasts were absolutely delicious. Lily and her husband in Havana were incredibly helpful and made our stay truly fantastic. Plus the view from the casa during breakfast was absolutely breathtaking. In Cienfuegos the owner was super friendly and also highly skilled in the kitchen.

Overall our trip was filled with wonderful experiences and amazing hospitality.

Yunior was the Best!!! Amazing Tour <3

I can’t thank you and Yoanis enough for this wonderful experience. Yoanis is so generous with his knowledge and the various activities and experiences were first rate. I loved the salsa lesson, the snorkelling, and seeing the different architectures of the various towns. I also very much enjoyed learning about Cuba’s history, and am saddened that such a wonderful country should be suffering such hard times.

With regard to the food, there was plenty of food. I must say that on the last breakfast in Vinales when we were served grapefruit, I was very glad that Yoanis doesn’t like it, so I ate the lot and loved it.

I wish you and Yoanis all the best in your venture, and I am sure you will be a great success. I hope that one day you can travel to Melbourne and we can meet again.

Thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this company. Our personalised tour was professionally organized, transport and accommodation were comfortable and more than adequate. The tour guide was experienced and exceptional with local knowledge.

Can’t fault this company.

Yoanis is a great guide, we enjoyed a few capirinhas with him in Havana. We had a small family group for a tailor made day tour in Havana with the added challenge of a wheelchair user. It was great value and fantastic personalised service. Thanks again.

9 Days | Travel to Cuba and experience the enthralling history of this fascinating Caribbean island.

Havana Buick in street

Experience the splendour of Cuba – a cobblestoned Caribbean gem where the rum is plentiful, the smiles infectious and dancing is essential. Join our Hola Cuba adventure and wind your way from sultry Havana and its crumbling churches, through the valleys and farms of Pinar del Rio, and on to the Afro-inspired beats of Trinidad. Along the way we’ve assembled a cast of Cuban characters to give you a proper welcome – tobacco farmers, expert chefs, local artists, historians and salsa dancers that understand where Cuba came from, where the country sits now and, more importantly, where it’s going.

Trip overview

  • Learn the local customs, folklore and beliefs behind Afro-Cuban religion as you’re welcomed into the homes of devoted residents on a colourful and unconventional Urban Adventure in Havana.
  • Relish a real garden-to-plate dining experience at a privately-owned organic eco-farm in picturesque Vinales – indulge in a variety of fresh produce all while gazing across sweeping views of the valley.
  • Receive a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of the charismatic and highly celebrated Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara at his mausoleum and museum in Santa Clara.
  • Experience Cuban hospitality and old-world charm in the coastal town of Trinidad. Wander through cobblestone streets among colourful colonial buildings and relax on the picturesque Playa Ancon.
  • Support the Cuban community by staying at privately-owned guesthouses, dining at home-grown restaurants, and gaining insider knowledge into Cuba’s history, thanks to the expertise of local guides.
  • The guesthouses (casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling and each room is unique. Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water supply are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country – but we believe that this is all a part of the local experience. To help set your expectations correctly, please read the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Part of Cuba’s appeal is its old-fashioned style – this includes the banking systems. Funds in Cuba can be difficult to access. Please read our Essential Trip Information to be fully prepared.
  • Luxuries such as air conditioning, plush pillows, and fly screens, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
  • Internet access can be hard to come by, and when it's available it's often unreliable and expensive. Treat this as a great opportunity to take a break from modern devices and have a true holiday.
  • Cuba is different, and that's a big part of its allure. Things don't always go according to plan, and many things don't work the same way as back home. Patience and good humor will go a long way in this beautiful destination.
  • Due to licensing restrictions, only 1-night pre-tour accommodation may be requested. Post-tour accommodation cannot be offered.

Bienvenido a Cuba! Welcome to Cuba! Upon arrival, soak in the decaying beauty of Havana and the surreal feeling that you have entered a bygone era. This is a very historic time to visit Cuba, as the gates finally creak open to a country so long forbidden, an opportunity has arisen to support the Cuban people and explore their incredible country. As there are no activities planned until your important welcome meeting at 6 pm – why not take a stroll to get acquainted with Cuba’s capital, where vintage cars, plumes of cigar smoke, Neo-Gothic churches and Art Deco theatres come together in a unique mesh of histories. After your welcome meeting, enjoy dinner at a local paladar, a privately-owned restaurant and a great example of Cuba’s incremental shift to a more free-market economy. Paladar means ‘palate’ but the popular usage of the word to describe this kind of restaurant references a Brazilian soap opera popular in Cuba in the 1990s.

  • Comfortable guesthouse (1 night)
  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

We have recently renamed the accommodation style on this trip to better reflect the different standards of accommodation we use across our different trip styles in Cuba. The standard of accommodation on this trip has not changed.

This morning, find out more about the local customs, folklore and beliefs of Cuba’s Afro-Cuban religion from an insider on a colourful and unconventional tour with Urban Adventures. Be welcomed into private homes and take the opportunity to learn from the devoted residents as you explore one of Havana’s sub-cultures at a grassroots level, something not often experienced by tourists. Next, you’ll get to see outer Havana in a convoy of classic American vintage cars. Cruise via points of interest – such as the Malecon, Revolution Square, Avenida de los presidentes and ending in Old Havana. Next, your leader will take you on a walking tour around the charming neighbourhood of Old Havana (approximately 2.5 hours). The best place to start any Havana experience is in the Old City, which is one of the best-preserved towns and in 1982 was designated a World Heritage Site. The streets are lined with colonial architecture, 16th-century fortresses and countless churches. Visit La Catedral San Cristobal de la Habana, the Palacio de los Marqueses de Aguas Claras and the Plaza de Armas. After a full day of exploration, enjoy an evening at leisure.

  • Havana - Afro-Cuban Religion Tour (guide and transport included)
  • Havana - Leader led City Tour of Old Havana
  • Havana - American Vintage Car Tour (No guide and transport included)

This morning, head east to Vinales. En route stop by an outer-Havana suburb to see the passion project of Jose Fuster, an artist who has turned an entire neighbourhood into a lively and colourful series of mosaics. Known as 'Fusterlandia', the inspiring and whimsical scenery is a perfect spot for pictures. Continue your journey to a local community in Las Terrazas (approximately 2 hours). The village was built as part of a government reforestation project and has since received a UNESCO biosphere listing. Meet up with local community leaders who will share insights into Las Terrazas and how the society works. You’ll also visit the ecological research centre and take a guided walk around the complex. After lunch take a 2 hour drive to Vinales – situated in one of the most picturesque parts of Cuba, it’s a small and culturally rich village, with friendly and welcoming residents. On your way into the village, you may pass by the vibrant Mural de la Prehistoria at the foot of the verdant Sierra de Vinales. Take the short journey into the centre of town and arrive in time for a brief orientation walk before heading to a privately-owned organic farm to learn about sustainable farming in Cuba. Hopefully meet local farmer Wilfredo Garcia Correa or at least his family who will show us around the farm and explain the methods used to cultivate crops without the use of pesticides, then enjoy a deliciously fresh and diverse meal prepared by the family, a truly authentic farm-to-fork experience!

  • Havana - Jaimanitas (Mosaic-laden Neighbourhood) including Fusterlandia (Entrance fee)
  • Las Terrazas - Sustainable Rural Economy Project (Entrance fee and Guide included)
  • Vinales - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Vinales - Farm-to-table dinner at an eco-friendly ranch

Today at 9 am, spend the morning (approximately 3 hours) finding out more about Cuban agriculture with a visit to a local tobacco farm to learn about the tradition of Cuban cigars. Get an insight as to how the communist system works, how much tobacco they keep, how much produce they give back to the government and how they make ends meet. Learn about the process of tobacco planting to rolling the final cigar. Share in the secret recipe of how they cure their leaves, which originated from one family and has been passed down through three generations – then drink some freshly roasted coffee from the farm while watching an expert roll a cigar. In the afternoon, get involved in a 1-hour salsa dance lesson, followed by a cooking demonstration from a local chef. Vinales is one of the more agriculturally productive areas of Cuba, so an abundance of homegrown seasonal fruit and vegetables are always on offer such as avocados, mangoes, pineapples, papaya, guava, and several varieties of sweet potatoes. Sit back, relax and enjoy the well-prepared meal while overlooking the lush scenery of Vinales.

  • Vinales - Half-day Valley tour on foot including Tobacco Farmhouse
  • Vinales - Salsa dance lesson (1 hour)
  • Vinales - Cooking Demonstration by Local Chef

Depart Vinales at 8 am and head to Cienfuegos – drive for approximately 4.5 hours before stopping for lunch. This afternoon you’ll visit the Korimakao Cultural Project in Ciénega de Zapata, an area famous for its wetlands. Founded in 1992, Korimakao is a project to bring theatre, music, and dancing to remote areas of Cuba. You’ll have the opportunity to meet a director of the project, who will talk to you about the importance of this venture and the number of students that have benefited from it. Continue along to the picturesque town of Cienfuegos (1.5 hours), a slice of Paris in the Caribbean. Founded in 1819 by pioneering French immigrants – the elegant architectural influence that these settlers brought with them, earned the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing in 2005.

  • Cienaga de Zapata - Korimakao Cultural Project (entrance fee, guide and transport included)
  • Cienfuegos - Leader-led orientation walk

This morning at approximately 8.30 am, your leader will show you around the charming streets of Cienfuegos before getting back on the road around 10 am, heading towards the National Park of Topes de Collantes (approximately 2 hours). Here there is a stop for a swim in a waterfall and to have lunch at a small privately-owned family farm. Travel onwards to the beautiful city of Trinidad (approximately 1.5 hours). Located near the lovely Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of Sugar Mills) and Playa Ancón, Trinidad enjoys long stretches of unspoiled, white sand beaches and is home to numerous churches and well-preserved colonial buildings. After lunch, begin with a guided cultural tour of the city (approximately 3 hours) – this includes an opportunity to visit two museums such as Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos, Museo Romantico or the History museum. Later, visit the privately-owned pottery workshop of the Santander family. This family are well known in the Cuban cultural landscape for having produced pottery for generations as well as assisting in the restoration of sculptures that once existed in this UNESCO world heritage site. Support the Cuban economy by taking the chance to purchase your own pottery as a reminder of your time in Cuba. In the evening, perhaps seek out the dance scene in Cuba. You may wish to see the local Afro Cuban Folkloric dance group that perform shows at the club Palenque, which has cultural and social importance in this region. Nightlife in Trinidad is probably the most accessible and intense in all of Cuba, with numerous live music venues and many dance performances every day of the week.

  • Trinidad - Leader-led City Tour including Museums (entrance fees, guide and transport included)
  • Trinidad - Pottery Centre
  • Trinidad - Afro-Cuban folklore show (entrance fee) from - EUR3
  • Trinidad - Cave Disco (entrance fee) - EUR14

This morning is yours to explore Trinidad by selecting one of the many optional activities on offer. Perhaps you’d like to hire a bike and cycle along the city’s colorful streets, past once-grand mansions, pastel buildings and wrought iron features – or instead you might choose to explore one of the excellent walking trails in the nearby Sierra del Escambray mountains. Your leader can suggest a lunch place at a local paladar. In the afternoon head to Playa Ancon for some beach time fun and maybe a little snorkeling, followed by a sunset picnic prepared for you by one of the privately-owned guesthouses.

  • Trinidad - Sunset Picnic at Playa Ancon (Weather Dependent)
  • Trinidad - Musical Instrument Lesson (guitar, double bass, tres, percussion) per hour - EUR10
  • Trinidad - Trek to El Nicho Waterfall (entrance fee, guide and transport included) - EUR257

Leave Trinidad around 9 am, heading to Santa Clara (approximately 2 hours), a key city in the Cuban Revolution to see the iconic statue of Ernesto Ché Guevara, built to commemorate his death and that of the revolutionaries. There will be time to explore the museum which honours Che's life. Drive back to Havana (approximately 3 hours) where there will be some time to freshen up before a final fun-filled night of music, dinner and dancing at Rosalia de Castro – where you’ll enjoy an ensemble of Cuban classics performed live by Buena Vista Social Club!

  • Santa Clara - Che Guevara Mausoleum and Museum (entrance fee)
  • Havana - Buena Vista Social Club Performance (entrance fee & dinner)

Your adventure ends today after breakfast. There are no activities planned for the final day so remember to say good-bye to your leader before you head back to the U.S.

Cuba Tour Reviews

Cuba - tour highlights and travel tips.

Havana, the capital city and leading commercial centre of Cuba

Cuba is an island that is full of life, history, and culture. It’s history with both Spain and Africa makes Cuba not only a culturally diverse place, but also a unique meeting of the eastern and western worlds. Looking for a good sandwich? How about a Cuban?

Tour Highlights

  • Go and delight in the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Cuba’s national ballet.
  • Enjoy a game of baseball, football, cricket, or basketball.
  • Listen and get your feet moving to mambo, cha-cha-cha, and salsa.
  • See some of the classic cars that line the streets of Havana.
  • Go and visit the small city of Trinidad.
  • Soak up the sun on one of Cuba’s many beaches - a must do when on a trip to Cuba.
  • Hike the Sierra Maestra Mountains, and enjoy the rural nature the island has to offer.

Travel Tips

  • Bring a guidebook; Cuba has terrible Internet connection.
  • Know your money; there are two different types of pesos.
  • Don’t engage the hustlers on the street; if you appear disinterested, they’ll leave you alone.
  • Don’t talk politics; with Cuba’s checkered history comes discomfort.
  • Drink only bottled water.
  • Learn Spanish; it will make your life easier during a holiday in Cuba.
  • Don’t stay in hotels; go with Casas Particulares (private houses or homestays).

Cuba has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Cuba before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Cuba, do check out our Cuba Travel Guide for more information.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck trip for entry into Cuba. You will also need a visa to enter Cuba, the nature of which is somewhat different than what many other countries require. The Cuban government requires all foreign visitors to have a Cuban visa, sometimes referred to as a "Tourist Card," for which there is no official application process. Cuban immigration officials will collect one half of this two-part card upon your arrival in the country, and the other half upon your departure. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa, which will be given to you in Miami, along with the documents for your included charter flight from Miami to Havana.

In addition, other special documentation will be needed to complete the requirements for travel to Cuba; more details about this required documentation will be sent to you with your booking confirmation. Please review the details in the Instruction Sheet and  Travel Affidavit . You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

Please Note: Because many of you are traveling as a U.S. citizen with Tauck on a People-to-People educational exchange travel itinerary operated under a license granted to Tauck by the United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), you are legally licensed and authorized to travel to Cuba.  Before departing on your trip, we will give you a Letter of Authorization from Tauck stating that you have permission to travel under that license, to keep as part of your travel documents.

If you are a citizen of another country but legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have a valid passport from your country of citizenship, as well as a residency card or alien card (or "green card") to establish your legal U.S. residency when returning to the U.S. from Cuba upon your arrival in Miami.

If you are a Cuban-born U.S. citizen, your travel document requirements depend on when you originally departed Cuba. If you departed Cuba prior to December 31, 1970, you will require either a PE-11 visa (which can take from six to eight weeks to process, is valid for a one-time entry for 30 days, and expires within 90 days of issue) or a Cuban passport; the choice is yours. If you left Cuba after January 1, 1971, you will require a Cuban passport, which can take from three to four months to obtain. If you will need help in obtaining one of these documents, please let us know at the time of booking.

If you are a citizen of another country and do not legally reside in the U.S., you may travel on Tauck's People-to-People trip to Cuba as long as you have the proper documentation that allows you to enter the U.S. for the start of the trip and return to the U.S. at the end of the trip. A multi-entry U.S. visa is required.

A travel affidavit is also required for all travelers to Cuba, regardless of nationality. Please use this link to apply for your travel affidavit at least 75 days prior to your trip: https://cubatravelservices.com/tauck-travel-affidavit/

Because all guests on this tour (U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike) will be arriving into Cuba from the U.S., a Cuban visa is required of all travelers. Tauck will obtain your Cuban visa for you during your tour.

Please note that you will not be traveling to Cuba as a tourist. You will be traveling as part of the People-to-People educational exchange.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen. You must retain these documents for a period of at least five years.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Health Safety and Mobility

Our People-to-People cultural exchange activities in Cuba include visits to rural areas, agricultural facilities and small villages, as well as to various sections of Havana with centuries-old streets and buildings with limited access. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Both the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove and the Meliá Habana are equipped with elevators.  The road conditions in Cuba are improving; however, paved roads, especially in rural areas, are often in poor condition. Some roads to rural locations are not paved and some out-of-the-way destinations are accessible only by these roads; other roads may be unpaved and bumpy. Our People-to-People cultural exchange itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Travelers should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one traveler.  Travelers requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at the hotels on the journey, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on your motor coach.

The only hotel on this trip that allows smoking is the Meliá Habana in Havana.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

About This Tour

cuba tour groups

Why we love this trip:

  • 10 days in Cuba gives you enough time to unlock the marvellous mysteries of Cuba and the people who call her home.
  • Though the tour is exhaustive, it’s certainly not exhausting, with plenty of spare time to explore Cuba on your own (particularly its remarkable nightlife).
  • You’ll get to experience the glory of Viñales – an utterly charming village that’s also the heart of Cuba’s tobacco production.
  • The beaches you used to love might not seem so special after some of the beaches you’ll experience on our 10 day Cuba group tour.
  • If you don’t already have a taste for Cuban cocktails, you probably will after this tour! And of course, you’ll learn how to make your own under friendly, expert tutelage.
  • Take in the French-inspired architecture of Cienfuegos.
  • You’ll visit the final resting place of the iconic (and controversial) Che Guevara.
  • Check out the history, significance (and deliciousness) of rum with a visit to the Havana Rum Museum. Learn more about the production of cigars at a Havana cigar factory.
  • Check out the pulsing heart of Havana’s artistic community when visiting Callejon de Hammel.
  • The people of Cuba. Meeting the locals might well be your most-loved part of your 10 day Cuba group tour.

Is this Cuba tour for me?

Our Cuba group tours are perfect for those who want the freedom and flexibility to travel at their own pace, along with the security, camaraderie and cultural insight that comes from travelling with a local English-speaking guide and small group.

  • Age is just a number… well that’s what we think anyway. Our Cuba group tours suit a particular travel ethos, rather than age group. Our ideal traveller is someone that wants to immerse themselves in Cuban culture and experience everything that makes Cuba so unique.. the amazing, the confusing and the confounding.
  • Cuban B&B’s (Casa Particulares) are family run business which are set-up to provide B&B style accommodation to foreigners – a unique cultural experience. Casa’s are generally much nicer than normal Cuban dwellings but can be more basic than foreigners are used to. It is important to remember that each room at a Casa is unique in its size and set-up. Whether you stay in a hotel or Casa, sometimes power cuts and breaks in hot water are unavoidable in any developing country.
  • Part of the experience of traveling through Cuba is experiencing Cuban resourcefulness. Spare parts are often difficult and expensive to come by, so don’t be surprised if your notice that ‘Cuban innovation’ has been used to keep various things working.
  • Access to the internet in Cuba is getting better but can still be variable, slow and unreliable. It is also relatively expensive to get online at a hotel or one of the various Wifi zones that have been set-up across the country. Traveling through Cuba offers a great opportunity to take a break from your electronic devices and have a truly relaxing experience.
  • Cuba is a unique travel destination and that is what makes it so popular. It is part of the ‘laid back Caribbean’ and things don’t always go to plan or schedule. A great sense of humour and patience are qualities that will go along way in making your stay in Cuba an enjoyable one.

Estimated travel times:

Have you ever been on a tour where you’re briskly rushed from place to place? This doesn’t happen on our 10 day Cuba group tour. A leisurely pace of life is truly a typically Cuban mentality, so on a longer journey we will of course stop for lunch, a chance to stretch your legs, and to take in the beauty of your surroundings. Your approximate travel times on our 10 day Cuba group tour will be as follows:

  • From Havana to Cienfuegos (via Bay of Pigs): 5 hours
  • From Cienfuegos to Trinidad (via Santa Clara): 3 hours
  • From Trinidad to Viñales: 7 to 8 hours
  • From Viñales to Havana: 3 hours

To download our Cuba drive times map ( click here ).

Transportation:

All private transportation is included  between  destinations and for any activities/ excursions included in your itinerary that require transportation to and from the activity. Any extra transportation requirements can be organised through your Cuban guide and paid for locally in Cuba.

Public transport in Cuba can be beautifully, even hilariously chaotic, but this is not something that you’ll need to worry about. You will be driven from destination to destination in comfort and style, using private transportation, with air conditioning of course, which you will probably be rather thankful for!

Spending money on tour:

Everyone spends their money differently while on tour. Some days you might be tempted to spend a little more, and other days you might not. It’s completely up to you. Many of your primary expenses are included in your 10 day Cuba group tour, but you will need to consider other expenses, namely drinks, food, souvenirs, tips (ask your guide about an appropriate amount), and of course, any optional excursions and activities. We estimate that you will need approximately Eur€50.00 to Eur€60.00 per person, per day to cover your local expenses.

Travel to Cuba from the U.S.:

For those traveling to Cuba from the U.S. (regardless of nationality), please note that the documentation we will include with your booking ensures your compliance with current U.S. travel restrictions (515.574 Support for the Cuban People). In addition to retaining your itinerary, please keep records of your booking receipt, airline receipt, and any supplemental insurance purchased. You should retain these copies for 5 years after your travel. Some of our travelers have been asked to furnish these upon application for Global Entry, Pre-Check, and other programs with TSA oversight.

10 Day Cuba Group Tour Itinerary

How to sum up Havana? This complex, culturally-rich, and fascinatingly contradictory city can perhaps be described in a single word: Alive. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle, but our expert local guides will ensure that your 8 day Cuba group tour will never be overwhelming. It’s important to remember that the first day of your 8 days in Cuba is considered to be a joining day, so any activities on this day will depend on what time your flight arrives. While there are no activities planned on this first part of the tour, your accommodation will have been arranged and you have the option to meet your guide and fellow tour members for a delicious dinner.

The heart of this scintillating city is undoubtedly Havana’s Old Town (La Habana Vieja). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sublime assault on your senses, with the beauty of the colonial era architecture combining with the spirit of the locals to make an experience that almost feels like some kind of immersive theatre production. Many of the main points of interest are within a conveniently close proximity to each other, so you can experience much of the city on foot (so be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes). If you want to spend extra time in Cuba’s capital, we will be very happy to arrange your accommodation, and our expert guides will be able to give you some great recommendations about what parts of the city (and surrounding countryside) you should explore on your own.  You can also book any extra day tours you might be interested in, through our sister organisation – Locally Sourced Havana Tours – www.havanatourcompany.com

ACCOMMODATION

  • Authentic, Upgraded or Superior B&B’s

– Airport Transfer on Arrival

MEALS INCLUDED

  • No meals included on this day

There’s a significant stopover on the road to Cienfuegos. We’ll make a stop at Playa Girón, which is otherwise known as the Bay of Pigs. This infamous spot was where the US attempted to stage an invasion of Cuba, which was ultimately unsuccessful and ended up being one of the USA’s first military failures in Latin America.

Cienfuegos is often referred to as the Paris of the Caribbean, but upon arrival, you’ll wonder why anyone needs to compare this pearl of a city to anywhere else (OK, so it also happens to be known as the pearl of the Caribbean). The French influences come from the French migrants who congregated and made their home here, giving it a strikingly different look to other cities in Cuba which have more of a Spanish influence.

The wide boulevards and expansive parklands are ravishing, and history is on proud display at every turn. At the entrance to the harbour you’ll see the Castillo de Jagua, an ancient fort that allowed the city to withstand the pirate attacks that were once common in Cuba. Many buildings in the town have been given UNESCO world heritage status, and you might think you’ve never seen such a beautiful town… until we show you some other places on your 10 day Cuba group tour.

  • Standard Authentic or Upgraded Casa’s/ B&B’s

INCLUDED ACTIVITIES

  • Swim/ Snorkel at the Bay of Pigs
  • Visit Museum Giron
  • Guided Orientation Walk of Cienfuegos City
  • 1 x Drink at the impressive Palacio de Valle

Your journey to Trinidad features a stop in the city of Santa Clara to pay your respects to Cuba’s most famous adopted hero. Argentinian-born Che Guevara became an icon of the Cuban Revolution, and after he died attempting to do in Bolivia what he did in Cuba, his body was unceremoniously buried in an unmarked grave. When his remains were discovered, he was exhumed and brought to Santa Clara for a hero’s burial in a purpose-built mausoleum. Santa Clara was the site of one of the final (and bloodiest) battles in the revolution, the city where Guevara and his rebels successfully derailed a military train carrying weapons and ammunition to be used against Fidel Castro.

And then it’s time to continue to Trinidad, a true delight located in Cuba’s heartland. This city was founded in 1514 and rose to prominence due to the extensive sugar production that took place in the nearby Valley of the Sugar Mills. This came to an end when slavery was abolished in Cuba, and Trinidad’s fortunes began a rapid decline. It has since been painstakingly restored, and the central city is now like a living, breathing, fascinating museum. Take the opportunity to visit a local waterfall, historic sugar mill or one of Cuba’s best beaches – Playa Ancon.

  • Standard Authentic or Upgraded Casa’s/ B&B’S
  • Che Guevara Memorial and Museum
  • Guided Trinidad Township Walk
  • Informal Salsa Lesson

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • There will be some free time at this destination to choose from a range of Optional Activities , that can be organised through your local guide and paid for locally.

Day 3 & Day 4

How will you know you’re getting close to Viñales on your 8 day Cuba group tour? Perhaps it will be the red, rich, fertile soil. Maybe it will be the mogotes – dramatic, circular rock formations that look like a beauty mark jutting upwards from the earth. Maybe it’s the fact that your guide will start to excitedly tell you that you’re almost there! Viñales is reasonably close to Havana, and has been popular with visitors for generations. In the heart of the Pinar del Rio valley, most of Cuba’s tobacco production takes place in and around Viñales. A closer exploration of this remarkable farmland with a succulent lunch at an organic farm is going to be a highlight during your 8 days in Cuba.

When the sun goes down, the village of Viñales comes out to play. There is a remarkable energy to the township, which is deceptive given its relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

  • Guided Orientation Walk of Vinales Township
  • Tobacco Farm and Drying House
  • Lunch at an Organic Farm

It’s just a short drive back to the Cuban capital for the last days of your tour. There will be a number of arranged activities, plus plenty of chances to explore at your own leisure. Don’t forget that there are some brilliant  treats waiting for you during these last days of your 10 day Cuba group tour. You will see the other elements of the city and how they all come together to form contemporary Havana. Don’t worry, this will be done in style, in the back of one of those classic American cars that Cuba is known for.

You’ll then be taken to one of our favourite spots in the whole city, a rooftop terrace in Havana’s Old Town. You will be taught how to make a delicious mojito (or a non-alcoholic alternative if you prefer) before enjoying a stunning dinner with your guide and the fellow members of your 10 day Cuba group tour. Is there a better way to end your 10 days in Cuba than with a relaxing dinner while watching the sun go down over one of the most glorious cities in the world?

  • Convertible Classic Car Tour
  • Mojito Making Lesson
  • Roof Top Dinner

Time to put on your walking shoes for a walking tour of Havana’s Old Town. You’ll get to know her like an old friend as you walk through her ravishing network of plazas, essentially the places that the city was built around. Old Havana is the village where the modern city grew from. It was once a walled settlement (to protect the fledgling outpost from pirates and hostile foreign forces). Of course, Havana couldn’t be contained, and her history will come to life as your expert guide leads you along her streets. Speaking of streets, this portion of your 10 day Cuba group tour includes a stop on the Callejon de Hammel. This nifty little street is where a number of local artists chose to live and work. And like the boundaries of Havana, their creativity couldn’t be contained. The street is basically one big artist’s studio, with lavish, vibrant murals and street art.

  • Old Havana Walking tour
  • Visit Callejon de Hamel

Your 10 day Cuba group tour needs some time to get familiar with some of Cuba’s finest products, and this will definitely be the case. The Havana Rum Museum is housed in a colonial-era mansion in the heart of the city and details the history and cultural significance of this heavenly drink, and naturally there will be chances to taste the product. Next on the agenda is the Partagas Cigar Factory where the mystique behind cigar making will be revealed, allowing you to gain a sense of the significance of these beauties. You will also witness first hand the amount of effort, care and tradition that goes into making these Cuban treasures (even non-smokers will find this tour very interesting).

  • Havana Rum Museum
  • Partagas Cigar Factory

Day 10 of the tour is time to say goodbye, with no scheduled activities. This means you are free to leave at any time, depending on when your flight leaves. But of course, your expert local guide can give you suggestions about what to do if you happen to have much of the day free. You could, of course, simply perch yourself in one of Havana’s sublime plazas and watch the world go by…

  • Airport Transfer to depart

Meet our locally sourced team

Our single supplement policy:.

It can be a common annoyance when you travel by yourself on a group tour. Why do you need to be charged a large single supplement fee for your accommodation? We don’t know why this is, and we don’t like it anymore than you do! This is why we keep our single supplement fee as low as possible,  if you happen to be making your way to Cuba as a solo adventurer on one of our Cuba group tours. You will still have the option of sharing a room, but it’s entirely up to you.

Airport transfer:

Your 10 day Cuba group tour includes being picked up at Havana’s José Martí International Airport and delivered to your accommodation in the city. For your departure, your guide can help you to arrange transportation at a time that’s convenient for you.

Fitness requirements:

While there are some optional activities and excursions that could be considered to be physically strenuous, the vast majority of your 10 days in Cuba will not be physically demanding. Having said that, you will need to have an average level of fitness and mobility. There will be a lot of exploration on foot, and so you should be able to walk without the assistance of another person. Please also remember that you will be required to carry your own luggage in many instances, as well as being able to enter and exit the tour bus. Some attractions also require you to climb stairs.

Accommodation on tour:

We just know you’re going to love staying in a Casa Particular. These Cuban bed and breakfast establishments offer a taste of authentic life on the island. Their increasing popularity is a reflection of how Cuba is easing a lot of former restrictions on private enterprise. This allows Cuban families to convert a section of their home into accommodation, giving them a stream of income, while also allowing visitors to stay in a more welcoming environment than most hotels are able to offer. You’ll have privacy while still being able to interact with the locals as much as you want. It’s a stark difference to most types of accommodation, and you will truly be made to feel welcome – you might forget that you’re a paying guest and not a long lost member of the family, and this is all part of the fun. Some accommodation providers are in older buildings without an elevator. If you believe that your physical capabilities will make it difficult to climb stairs, simply let us know. We will be able to find you a suitable alternative. And if you should want to spend a few extra days in Havana (and who wouldn’t?), please let us know. You can easily use our online form when making your booking to arrange additional accommodation as needed.

Our 10 Day / 9 Night Cuba Group Tour uses Casa/B&B style accommodation. You can learn more about staying in Casa’s here .

Day 2 - Havana

Havana is one of the world's most interesting cities to visit and recently it has become more accessible. Restoration of the oldest buildings has been going on for over a decade while many others are still neglected and decaying. Apart from the individual buildings being impressive sights in themselves, this juxtaposition of decay and restoration fuels the imagination and also a sense of hope. Add to that the living and vibrant society that lives within, the city has a unique character that will forever be etched in your memory. This morning your tour leader will take you on a walking tour of Old Havana. You will visit the main attractions and also to some local favourite hidden corners! There is a lot to see in Havana, so we can't cover everything in this half day tour. However your tour leader will give you tips and suggestions on places you can come and visit on any extra days you decide to spend in Havana after the tour. This afternoon we venture out in some classic old American cars on a tour to visit some of the interesting places outside of Old Havana. The neighbourhoods of Central Habana, Vedado, and Miramar have their own characteristics and charms, and these are best seen in a slow riding open air car. This tour takes us to the Revolucion Square where we stop to appreciate the huge images of the revolutionary heroes Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, and the scene of many lengthy speeches by Fidel Castro. ■     Included Activities - Old Havana Walking Tour, Classic car tour of Havana ■     Included Meals - Breakfast

Day 3 - Viñales via Jaimanitas

Heading out of Havana we stop at the town of Jaimanitas and visit the unique Gaudi inspired community project fondly named ‘Fusterlandia’ - named after the project’s founder & artist Jose Fuster. We will have time to wander around his amazing home and admire the intricate mosaic work here and around the streets of the community. After a visit to Jaimanitas we head off towards the mountains and the province of Pinar del Rio.   The town of Viñales is one of Cuba's most picturesque towns of this province. The Valley of Viñales is surrounded by steep limestone hills, and the floor of the valley is a UNESCO heritage site for rural landscape. It's here that the farmers employ traditional methods such as using oxen, or simply by hand, to till the earth. The main crops are rice, corn, root vegetables - such as yuca, boniato, and malanga, and most famously some of Cuba's best tobacco. Today we will have some fun wandering the town, then discovering the art of cuban cocktail making as we learn how to make the best mojito! In the afternoon we have a salsa dance lesson to prepare us for a night out in this marvellous town. ■     Included Activities - Visit to Fusterlandia, Cocktail making lesson, Salsa lesson. ■     Included Meals - Breakfast, Lunch.

Day 4 - Viñales

We've included a walk of the Viñales Valley this morning as this activity has been one of the most highly rated by our travellers for many years now. The walk takes you through the UNESCO area of the valley where you will see the different farming activities that take place here and we will visit some farm houses, include that of a tobacco farmer who will explain the process of producing tobacco for Cuba's world renowned cigars.

This evening we include a visit to an outstanding organic farm with a spectacular view of the valley. It's here that we will enjoy watching the sun set over the valley and dinner in the farmhouse.

  • Included Activities - Guided walk of Viñales Valley,  Polo Montañez (open air nightclub) entry.
  • Included Meals - Breakfast, Dinner at the Organic Farm.

A worker at an organic farm in Vinales, Cuba, watering plants at sunset

Day 5 - Cienfuegos via Bay of Pigs

Today we head from Vinales along the Caribbean coast and to the very different city of Cienfuegos. We stop in the Bay of Pigs at an excellent site for snorkelling which can be done straight off the coast. Snorkelling gear is available for hire at low cost. If water activities are not your thing, you can sit in the share of a sea grape tree and enjoy the natural scenery.

The port city of Cienfuegos was developed by the French who came here to settle. The French had a strong influence on the city layout, which features an expansive main square, and a very pretty boulevard that runs from the city center, along the edge of the bay and to the end of the peninsula.

It's here at the end of Peninsula the Palacio del Valle sits. This was a privately built mansion that was constructed by a wealthy businessman and merchant. The architecture of the building is a mixture of styles, but what is clear is that a great deal of expense and effort went into its construction and decoration. The result is nothing short of spectacular.

  • Included Activity - Bay of Pigs swim, Palacio del Valle entry.
  • Included Meals - Breakfast, Lunch

Bay of Pigs

Day 6 - Trinidad

It is a very short trip from Cienfuegos to Trinidad so you will enjoy most of the day in the town of Trinidad.

Trinidad is one of Cuba's most exciting cities with a colonial hub that has been impressively conserved. The town's small and compact size means that all of its attractions within the city can be visited on foot. Its wealth grew through sugar production using African slave labour in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the architecture of the buildings reflect that period.

Today you have time to explore Trinidad, before the included activity which is a fun music & percussion lesson with one of the maestros of music. This experience is often a highlight and a fantastic way to learn more about Cuban rhythms, an integral part of Cuban culture.

We will finish the day while relaxing with a cocktail at sunset.

Trinidad is well known for its lively nightlife and there are many open air restaurants, bars, and live music and dance shows. Join your tour leader and the rest of the group to explore the city at night, or explore on your own!

  • Included Activities - Music & Percussion Lesson. Sunset Cocktail.
  • Included Meals - Breakfast

Day 7 - Trinidad

Today is a relaxing day. We have free time in the morning followed by some beach time in the afternoon at the beautiful Ancon beach .

If you prefer something more active, feel free to take up one of the Optional activities such as the 3 hour return hike to a beautiful waterfall in the nearby mountains, try a private salsa lesson, or just spend your time wandering around the streets of Trinidad visiting museums or listening to local musicians.

Tonight after our included dinner at one of the fantastic local paladares we head out to one of the many venues around Trinidad where live bands play Cuban music - from traditional to jazz to lively salsa rhythms!

  • Included Activities - Ancon Beach, Music Venue entry.
  • Included Meals - Breakfast, Dinner

A view from a bell tower in the city of Trinidad in Cuba

Day 8 - Havana via Santa Clara

Today we travel back to Havana and will make a stop in Santa Clara to visit the Che Guevara Museum and Mausoleum.

Che is an extremely controversial figure in Latin America and an immensely important figure in Cuba's history. His remains were found in Bolivia and brought here to rest in 1990. There is a huge bronze statue of El Che, an eternal flame and many of his personal items as exhibits in the Museum.

We stop for lunch on the journey back to Havana and settle back into our accommodation for the last night of the tour.

Tonight is our final evening as a group, and your tour guide will propose a few different dining options, as well as places to go out afterwards such as live music venues, bars, or dance venues.

As always, you have the option to explore on your own with tips and ideas that the guide can help you with.

  • Included Activities -  Visit to Che Guevara Museum
  • Included Meals - Breakfast, Lunch

The Comfort Guesthouses

La Quimera Hostal in Havana

The recent changes in Cuba have meant that individuals have a bit more freedom to do business and an increased access to materials. This has resulted in some of the privately owned  B&B Guesthouses  in Cuba being able to improve the comfort levels and style of their accommodation. Features such as quiet, modern air conditioning, imported mattresses, and reliable hot water systems, that are difficult to obtain in Cuba, are now appearing in some of these better equipped guesthouses. While comfort levels still cannot compete with a 4 or 5 star hotel, the levels of service and personal attention compare favourably to state run hotels in Cuba. The guesthouses offer flexibility, local character, and opportunity to meet local families and everyday Cubans.

Our Comfort Guesthouses are only slightly better than our Standard Guesthouses . However if you enjoy the style of travel we offer, and are looking for a higher standard of accommodation given the limitations in Cuba, then a tour package with this category of accommodation is probably your ideal. Read more here  about the difference between our categories of  Standard  and  Comfort  Guesthouses in Cuba.

Late arrivals or early departures

Late Arrival  - If you plan to arrive on Day 2 or after, we can arrange for you to catch up to the group. This may involve you paying transport costs to do so.

Early Departure  - This tour arrives back in Havana, around midday or early afternoon on Day 7, so a departure from Cuba in the evening of Day 7 is possible. An earlier departure than this is also possible and may involve you paying transport costs for us to send you back to Havana by yourself.

Spending money

We estimate you will need  between €370 and €550  EUR   ($400 and $600  USD ) for local expenses during the tour such food, drinks, and optional activities, but not including souvenirs. Cost of meals can vary greatly (especially in Havana) depending on your restaurant of choice.  Click here  to see further description and  details of expenses  you will have while on the tour in Cuba.

Not included in the Tour

  • Visa and passport fees
