The Cure Launches First US Tour in 7 Years: Videos and Set List

The Cure launched their North American tour with a performance in New Orleans on Wednesday night.

Robert Smith  and the band delivered a 29-song set that included four songs from their long-anticipated upcoming album: “Alone,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” “A Fragile Thing” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye.” They also played deep cuts “A Thousand Hours” and “Six Different Ways,” both making their first live appearances since 1987.

The group previously debuted some unheard tracks during a European tour last year. “The new Cure stuff is very emotional,” Smith noted to  The Sunday Times . “It’s 10 years of life distilled into a couple of hours of intense stuff. I can’t think we’ll ever do anything else.”

The band’s last performance on U.S. soil took place in 2019 at the Austin City Limits festival. You have to go back even further to 2016 to find the last time they embarked on a full North American tour.

The Cure’s 2023 tour arrived with high anticipation but also controversy. The band made every effort to make tickets affordable and accessible to fans, utilizing Ticketmaster's verified fan sale program to skirt scalpers and third-party ticket brokers. In a statement made during the tour’s announcement, the Cure noted that "apart from a few Hollywood Bowl charity seats, there will be no 'platinum' or 'dynamically priced' tickets on this tour."

Despite these good intentions, the band’s fans were furious when Ticketmaster added a series of fees to the tickets, in some cases raising the total cost to double their face value. Smith soon announced he was “sickened” by the “unduly high” fees and convinced Ticketmaster to refund fans part of the cost.

The Cure opens North American tour with hits, new songs, huge rarities — setlist and video

After all the ballyhoo over ticket sales, The Cure’s North American tour finally got underway Wednesday night in New Orleans, with Robert Smith and the band delivering a 29-song set that included big hits, fan favorites, unreleased material — and a couple songs not played in concert since the 1980s.

As they did during last year’s extensive European tour , The Cure opened the show in New Orleans with “Alone,” a track expected to appear on the band’s delayed new album Songs of a Lost Word .

It was one of five new, unreleased songs performed Wednesday night, a list that also includes “A Fragile Thing,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” “Endsong” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye” — all of which were played on last year’s tour.

More surprising — or, rather, shocking — were the performances of two songs The Cure hasn’t played in concert since 1987. “Six Different Ways” off of the Head on the Door had only been played on tours between 1985 and 1987 (and soundchecked a few times in 1996). And “A Thousand Hours,” an extremely deep cut off 1987’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me , had only ever been performed live once before — in Los Angeles in 1987.

The rest of the set featured more familiar fare for anyone who’s seen The Cure on recent tours, with The Head on the Doo r (“A Night Like This,” “Push”), Disintegration (“Fascination Street,” “Pictures of You”), Seventeen Seconds (“A Forest,” “At Night”) and Wish (“From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea,” “Doing the Unstuck”) all well-represented, along with what’s now become a live staple: “Burn,” from the soundtrack to “The Crow.”

Wednesday night’s show in New Orleans opened the 35-date North American leg of the Shows of a Lost World tour, which continues across the U.S. and Canada through a July 1 date in Miami.

The tour finds Smith joined by his longest-serving bandmate, bassist Simon Gallup, as well as drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell and guitarist Reeves Gabrels. Smith surprised fans last fall by bringing back guitarist/keyboardist Perry Bamonte, who played in the band from 1990 to 2005.

The Cure Set First North American Tour in Seven Years

The Cure will embark on their first North American tour in seven years this summer as the Rock Hall-inducted band ’s Songs of a Lost World trek have added four additional dates to their previously scheduled slate of 30 shows.

Following their 2022 European jaunt, Robert Smith and company will kick off their 2023 North American dates on May 10 in New Orleans. After circling the U.S. and parts of Canada — including three-night stands at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl and New York’s Madison Square Garden — the leg concludes July 1 in Miami.

The new dates include a stop in Portland as well as additional nights in Montreal, Atlanta, and San Diego. “Please please please don’t buy tickets if you don’t intend [on] going to the show,” the band pleaded on Twitter, hoping their tickets make it into the right hands and don’t end up on secondary markets.

Fans can sign up for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan now ahead of the on-sale dates. New dates will be available beginning Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. local time. The fourth extra show, the Portland stop, will be “an experiment to see whether non-transferable tickets are enough protection,” thus Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan will not be required for those purchases.

Other than the Cure’s 2019 performances at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the Austin City Limits Festival , and their own Pasadena Daydream fest , the band last staged a North American tour in 2016.

The Cure kicked off their first North American tour in seven years with a show at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Wednesday.

The Robert Smith-led band delivered a 29-song setlist that included several new songs presumably taken from their long-teased new album, Songs of a Lost World , including “Alone,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” “A Fragile Thing,” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye.” During the encore The Cure dusted off “A Thousand Hours,” from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss , and “Six Different Ways” from The Head on the Door (neither song had been played since 1987).

The  North American leg of the “Songs of a Lost World Tour” runs through early July. The tour’s ticket on-sale has been quite the ordeal , but there are  limited quantities  still available via  Ticketmaster .

The rock legends performed fan favourite hits along with tracks from new album 'Hackney Diamonds'

The Rolling Stones kicked off their 2024 ‘Hackney Diamonds’ tour in Houston last night (April 28) – check out the full setlist, footage and pictures below.

The legendary rockers – Mick Jagger ,  Keith Richards  and  Ronnie Wood – opened the first night of their 2024 North American tour at NRG Stadium with hits like ‘Start Me Up’, ‘Paint It Black’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’.

There was a live debut for ‘ Hackney Diamonds ’ song ‘Mess It Up’, along with a performance of ‘Little T&A’ for the first time since 2016.

Early in the set, the band also performed fan-favourite deep cut ‘Out of Time’ live for the first time in the US.

“Thank you Houston! You were an amazing audience for opening night!” shared the band on Instagram this morning (April 29).

The concert kicked off a 16-date North American tour in support of their latest album, which will continue on to cities like Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago Los Angeles and more throughout May, June and July.

Gary Clark Jr. opened for The Rolling Stones in Houston last night, with a host of support acts due to open the remaining nights of the tour including The Pretty Reckless , Joe Bonamassa ,  The Linda Lindas and more.

Reviewing ‘Hackney Diamonds’ in October – their first studio album of new material since 2005’s ‘ A Bigger Bang ’ – NME  described the record as an “absolute barnstormer”.

The four-star write-up added: “But if ‘Hackney Diamonds’ does round off the most successful career in rock music ever, it wouldn’t be a bad place to leave it. A natural end, but definitely not a normal one.”

Ronnie Woods recently spoke to NME about the “explosive” new songs and how they would translate live. “I have complete faith. We could play the whole album, you know what I mean? But [Mick and Keith] will go, ‘Oh no Ron, that’s so ambitious’. We’re not gonna forget the back catalogue,” he shared.
