The Trust Project
Melanie Murray hustles. When the 17-year-old from Hoboken, New Jersey, couldn’t get a ticket to the Taylor Swift concert in East Rutherford, she decided to perform Swift songs for people standing in the pop singer’s notoriously long merch lines.
“It kind of started as a joke,” she said.
Murray was slated to attend UCLA’s songwriting intensive this summer, but her afternoon in East Rutherford changed her mind. After experiencing a crowd full of supportive diehard fans of Taylor Swift — Swifties — outside of MetLife Stadium, she ditched the UCLA plan and built a schedule to follow Swift’s Eras tour, which landed in Denver on Friday.
Pop stars have stans and rock stars have groupies, but Swifties are a different breed. More empowered, and more enterprising. It’s unsurprising, since Swift herself has a reputation as a savvy businesswoman who reportedly brings in more than $13 million per show, and whose tour as a whole is being compared to the GDPs of countries . Her two nights in Denver alone are estimated to contribute $140 million to Colorado’s GDP this year .
Of course, it’s not all about the money. It’s also about the community , the empowerment and the genuine connection her fans feel to the music. But it’s also about the money.
The positive shock
“We can easily see that we need positive shocks to the economy,” said Kishore Kulkarni, Distinguished Professor of Economics at Metropolitan State University. Positive shocks are events like the NBA Finals, or the Super Bowl, or the Democratic Party Convention, he said. “The Taylor Swift shock is just bigger.”
Swift has been selling out stadiums since her first tour in 2009, the Fearless tour, during which both her Staples Center show in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden show in New York set records for the fastest ticket grabs in either arena’s history (one and two minutes, respectively).
Swift has since graduated from the basketball arenas, which host around 20,000 people at capacity, to football stadiums, which hold around 80,000 people. Her shows still sell out within minutes.
Her previous tour, the Reputation tour in 2018 that centered around her album of the same name, was the highest-grossing U.S. tour in decades . Her follow-up tour was canceled in 2020 due to COVID, but she continued to churn out her signature chart-toppers.
The Eras tour launched in March from Glendale, Arizona, and sold more tickets at the Super Bowl Stadium than the Super Bowl did one month prior. On its third stop, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the tour broke the single-event attendance record at the arena where the Dallas Cowboys play. In Nashville, she set the single-event attendance record during her first show there on a Friday night, then proceeded to break her record twice over on Saturday and Sunday. Then she did it again in New Jersey, and again in Pennsylvania.
The costs of these huge events are hard to quantify, since they are mostly qualitative, Kulkarni said. Denver residents might not go out for dinner on the weekend because the restaurants are overcrowded, but those seats will be filled by Taylor Swift fans.
The most tangible downsides from the event will be traffic, pollution and “more beer drinkers on the street that day,” Kulkarni said. He added that the cost of ride-sharing and hotel rooms is expected to increase, though the latter shouldn’t affect local residents. “Overwhelmingly this is a good thing for Denver,” Kulkarni said. “And what’s good for Denver is good for Colorado.”
Tell me about the tickets
Ticket prices fluctuated as the Denver show dates neared, reaching highs upwards of $10,000 on the Monday before the show.
Economists conservatively estimated that the two Denver nights generated $38 million in ticket revenues, based on Empower Field’s concert capacity and average ticket prices of $250. But the data doesn’t include the costs incurred by businesses due to Swifties calling out of work in order to painstakingly watch a Ticketmaster presale queue last November.
Bella Vogt, a makeup artist and Sephora employee, told her work she had “a family thing,” and spent eight hours refreshing her screen. She later confessed the reason for her absence. Nathan Yan, a software engineer and aspiring DJ with a long Taylor Swift catalog in the back of his van, posted on a company Slack channel that the conference room was reserved for any Swifties trying to score tickets. A group sat around all day, half-working, half-watching the queue.
Those who persevered through the presale managed to buy 2 million tickets for the 52-night, 20 city Eras tour, the most Ticketmaster has ever sold in a single day. Along with approximately 12 million other fans who left disappointed that day, the surge of buyers overwhelmed Ticketmaster ’s system, and eventually led to legal action and multiple levels of legislation .
Vogt’s sick-day strategy didn’t pay off, and she wasn’t able to land tickets on that first attempt. She was, however, among a group who received “second chance” tickets from Ticketmaster weeks after the initial meltdown.
During this process, Ticketmaster emailed verified fan accounts and asked them to provide a price range they’d be willing to pay. When Vogt received the email that her tickets were confirmed, she couldn’t believe it. She thought it was a scam. She still thinks it’s “surreal.” Two tickets for $600 each. Floor seats in section M, row 1, seats 1 and 2. On Thursday she said she hoped to touch Swift’s hand when she rushed toward the crowd during “August.”
The growing economy
Concertgoers spend an average of $1,327 on related purchases according to a report by the Common Sense Institute , contributing more than $200 million in direct consumer spending during the Denver concerts. Shelby Morse, spokesperson for Denver’s office of Economic Development & Opportunity, said the industries that benefit most from major stadium tour stops are hospitality, rideshare/pedicabs, parking lots and retail.
On Saturday afternoon, the makeup store Sephora at the 16th Street Mall was so busy that there were no representatives to speak with the Sun. “We’re so swamped, it’s bigger than our Black Friday sale,” one employee said over the phone before hurriedly hanging up. The makeup appointments were full well in advance — $60 for a full face, $90 for special designs — and the body glitter sold out Saturday morning.
Handmade outfits and make-up that reference Swift’s songs and music videos are a major part of preparing for the show. “We’re in the weeds. Like you won’t get half of the costumes that you see because they are so obscure,” said René Hurtado of Tempe, Arizona. “To be a Swiftie is to live as a Swiftie, you don’t just like casually know things.”
Hurtado’s outfit included a heavy denim jacket with a hand-painted list of Swift’s 10 albums down the back. It’s known as “Dave’s Eras Jacket,” and travels with the tour, from Swiftie to Swiftie, through the informal process of sending the wearer a DM on Instagram. She sent the Friday night wearer a DM offering to wait outside of Empower Field after the concert, and plans to go through her DMs tonight during a “focused, two-hour session” to decide who to send it to in Seattle, Swift’s next stop on the tour.
Siblings Sandra and Carlos Damas flew into Denver on Thursday from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico. Carlos said their preparation for the tour began in November, when they scored their tickets, but that things really started ramping up in March. There were the plane tickets, the hotels, the outfits, the friendship bracelets. When we spoke on Saturday afternoon, his sister Sandra was shopping at Sephora for the right shade of red lipstick for that night’s concert. She bought body glitter on Amazon ahead of time.
Vogt, the make-up artist whose concert countdown started “six to eight months ago,” is using the demand for her skills to contribute to the Swiftie community. On Saturday she and her girlfriend met out-of-town Swifties in their hotel room to do their make-up for the Night 2 show. They charged $75 per person. “So that’s basically paying for our merch,” Vogt said from the merch line outside Empower Field on Thursday, where she had been waiting since 4:30 a.m.

Cultural celebration and education at the heart of upcoming denver mariachi festival, what’s working: how a colorado music festival is cracking down on ticket scalpers, it’s expensive to go to concerts in colorado. let’s dig into why..
Murray, the merch-line singer, is serious about doing things on her own — with the help of her parents, of course. She said that touring the country this summer has given her more self-confidence and independence, and also a small following. It’s taught her how to put herself out there, how to hustle and how to stay determined.
But she’s also still in high school. Her flight to Swift’s Minneapolis show was her first time flying alone. She says things like “moooom,” like a typical embarrassed teenager, when she’s talking about how her mom will approach anyone to “market” her. She’s kidding, though, and is quick to point out that she wouldn’t be where she is today — in Denver — without the support of her parents.
Murray FaceTimes her friends constantly. She keeps a book with all of her song lyrics, and a scrapbook with trinkets from the tour. Her favorite piece that she’s collected so far is a bracelet that a Taylor fan made after seeing her perform at a merch line in Detroit. The bracelet has one of Murray’s original song titles on it.
Some of the most fulfilling conversations Murray has, though, are with the really young girls, because she sees so much of herself in them. Taylor Swift was Murray’s first concert. She went to Swift’s 1989 tour show at MetLife Stadium when she was 9. She’ll remember that concert for the rest of her life, she said, and she still has the T-shirt from the show. It was way too big for a 9 year old.
The afterglow
During the lead up to Swift’s concerts the word that everyone seemed to use was “surreal.” Fans had been waiting for this show for months. But what happens when the lights go down and Swift jets off to Seattle, then Santa Clara, California, and then LA?
“I’ve heard it called PTSD: Post Taylor Swift Depression,” said Yan, the software engineer.
Some fans, like Vogt, are heading to Seattle right alongside her. Murray isn’t sticking around for the afterglow, either. She flew to Seattle on Saturday, her eighth and final stop before heading home to New Jersey for the rest of the summer. The tour within the tour has been better than a summer internship, Murray said.
“A big thing I’ve learned is just how to have a lot of self-confidence, and not really care what other people think or say. You put yourself out there and if people hate it, people hate it. If people like it, that’s a great thing,” she said. “As a performer, it’s really impacted the way I talk to my audience.”
She’s sure she’ll remember this summer for the rest of her life, and the T-shirt she bought at her first concert finally fits.

The Differences Between Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Merch Online Vs. In Person
From online-only merch to fading tees, buying Eras swag is almost as complicated as getting tickets.
Buying tickets to Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour was so difficult that it spawned lawsuits that could very well change Ticketmaster as we know it. But believe it or not, there’s one thing that’s almost just as much of a hassle to obtain (and apparently maintain): Eras Tour merch because of extensively long lines, ranges of online-exclusive merch , and reports of certain items fading after just one wash . If you play your cards right though, it is possible to snatch up Swift’s merch with ease – and perhaps even nab some items no one else at the concert will get.
Swift has made merch accessible for fans who couldn’t get their hands on Eras Tour tickets by opening up her dedicated merch truck to the public in every Eras Tour city the day before each show. However, it’s taken some fans almost as long to buy merch as it did to buy their tickets in November, with lines stretching out to more than six hours long. Some people have also been camping out and buying literal cases of merch to resell online, leading Swift’s team to place limits on how many items can be bought per person.
If you have tickets to the show, merch lines aren’t quite as long once you enter the stadium, but you need to plan your day in advance if you’re after something specific. And if you don’t want to wait in line at all for Eras Tour merch, you’re in luck, but only to an extent. Swift’s online store carries a few of the items sold at the show, as well as a wide array of clothing, accessories, and other themed gadgets that are available exclusively online for the time being. However, a significant amount of pieces are only sold at the physical merch stands, making for some confusion on what to get.
Here’s your guide to Swift’s Eras Tour merch, including the whole fading issue.
What To Buy At The Eras Tour Merch Stand
Swift sells a variety of T-shirts, sweaters, and hoodies at the Eras Tour, most of which use the tour poster design and come in various colors, with the exception of a long-sleeve T-shirt that only has the image representing Midnights . Some of the most sought-after pieces, including the half-zip sweatshirt, a navy blue logo crewneck sweater, and a beige hoodie with a black-and-white tour poster on the back, are only sold at the merch truck, not at any of the merch stands inside the venue. If these are what you have your eye on, make sure to buy before heading into the stadium.
Most of the accessories sold at the show are only available in person, including the Eras Tour tote bag, canvas tapestry, water bottle, and glow baton. The only accessory that you can currently buy online is the “Bejeweled” bracelet, which has been sold on Swift’s online store since October. Each tour stop also has a personalized poster with the city’s name on it, which is also made available on the online store for a limited time after the shows.
What To Buy On The Eras Tour Online Store
Before the Eras Tour even began, Swift released a range of Eras Tour merch that fans can buy in advance and wear to their show. Many pieces are similar to those available at the merch stand, but there are slight differences between what’s sold online and in person. For example, the beige T-shirt sold at the stand has a black-and-white tour poster print, while the online shirt is in color , and the navy blue crewneck is sold as a very similar hoodie online. The only T-shirt that’s identical both online and at the venue is the black tour poster T-shirt .
The amount of merch available online is vast compared to what’s been sold at shows thus far. Currently, Swift’s store carries individual Eras Tour shirts for each era , from her 2006 debut to 2022’s Midnights , as well as outerwear with new designs not sold at the show, including an Eras Tour poncho in case you want to prepare for a rain show, which Swift famously loves.
Swifties aren’t the only ones taking advantage of this exclusive merch. After attending Swift’s show in Arlington, Texas, on April 1, her close friend Selena Gomez donned a pair of Eras Tour sweatpants, which are only available online for now.
Swift is also selling a huge variety of fun accessories not available at tour venues, including AirPods cases , a special Eras blanket , coasters shaped like guitar picks , actual guitar picks , and even a phone case with interchangeable frames for each era. Speaking from experience, it’s very easy to spend more money on merch than you did for your actual ticket, so be sure to plan wisely.
Will Your Eras Tour Merch Fade?
After the first shows of the Eras Tour, merch-buyers complained that their T-shirts drastically faded after just one wash. In a statement on Swift’s online store, the merch team explained that the “slight fade” is intentional for “the product’s distressed, vintage look” and is a result of the “particular ink curing process” that was used on the shirts. “Please also note it is important to follow product care instructions as listed on the product label when washing and drying your items, to best protect and maintain the product's look and feel,” they wrote.
However, Swift’s team is offering exchanges if buyers notice a “dramatic loss of pigment or ink bleeding” on their shirts, simply asking them to contact [email protected] to see if their case would fall under the exchange policy.

Music | review | taylor swift’s eras tour dazzles in denver, swift’s talent, discipline and cinematic poise was far more dazzling than confetti blasts or fireworks could ever be.
Taylor Swift called, and they answered.
Sparkling from head to toe, clutching their phones at all times and belting out well-memorized lyrics, more than 70,000 of her fans showed up Friday for Swift’s Eras Tour . The July 14 concert — the first of two dates at Empower Field at Mile High — prompted rapture from the opening moments.
See more photos of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show, night one.
With spectacle and emotion tightly braided, Swift megadosed the faithful at the sold-out show with songs from across her catalog while gracefully navigating costume and set changes against a massive LED screen. It was a feat on par with her “Reputation”-era tour stop at Empower Field more than five years ago. Granted, that was a necessarily more focused and (relatively) edgy concert, but both found an ideal balance of ferocity and all-ages, rainbow-hued smiles that spoke directly to the mostly female, mostly young crowd.
After opening sets from Gracie Abrams and MUNA, Swift’s dancers strutted onto the stage from behind the video wall raising tall, colorful plumage as Swift rose on a platform to sing “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince.” That kicked off the “Lovers”-era portion, with Swift rocking a glammed-out leotard and glittering boots as she vigorously worked through “Cruel Summer,” “The Man” and an ebullient, pro-LGBTQ “You Need to Calm Down.” Her clear, bright vocals lost some nuance in the windy air, assuming you could hear them over the oft-deafening screams from the crowd.
Each of her studio releases was afforded two to seven songs, all of which arrived with their own tonal and visual elements. Fetching looks abounded, from flowy, Old Hollywood glamour to Stevie Nicks witchcraft and cheeky cabaret. The albums with the most representation were her newest; “Folklore,” “Evermore” and “Midnights,” which were released during a prolific pandemic era (2020-22) that also saw her issuing rerecorded versions of “Speak Now” and “Red.”
She addressed it all from the stage, talking about her forced introspection, her new recordings and her time away from touring, but also her desire to innovate her “excruciatingly autobiographical” writing style.
That new tack has birthed songs like the modest, character-driven “Betty,” which contrasted sharply with sizzling dance classics such as “Shake It Off” or the upbeat “You Belong With Me.” As Swift noted, sentimentality was the point of the night, so why hold back? Few if any gatherings of this size can claim so much vulnerability, positivity and heart.
Swift’s longtime band and her Broadway-quality backing cast knew every note ahead of time, but it was still stunning to see such complex gears moving as one. Swift’s generosity extended to her monologues, and she appeared teary at one point while thanking the thunderous crowd. “I get to be up here with you … the most buoyant and bouncy crowd imaginable,” she said. “You get 1 million bonus points.”
She and her crew (which she graciously thanked) are near the end of an exhausting North American tour, and there weren’t many places for them to take a breath during the show. And yet Swift belted, whispered, chatted, prowled the stage, tossed her hair, snaked her hips, and gave us dozens of practiced, come-hither looks virtually nonstop for three and a half hours.
The Eras Tour is something of a reaction to the pandemic, she said, but also an attempt to take a broader inventory of her songwriting. Spanning 17 years in a single concert, one era at a time, is less a science than a gut feeling. And Swift made it feel intuitive. During her “secret songs” portion — an acoustic interlude featuring “Picture to Burn” and the live debut of “Timeless” — she got as physically close to the crowd as possible at the end of the long stage. She smiled and laughed and seemed unrehearsed.
Whether it was actually spontaneous didn’t matter. As the 45th and final song, “Karma,” closed out the night, there was no doubt Swift’s talent, discipline and cinematic poise are far more dazzling than any confetti blasts or fireworks ever could be. But we’ll take those, too.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour merch: Prices, what to buy and opening times
How much is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour merch?
If you're looking to get your hands on a hoodie or a sweater commemorating your time at the Eras Tour, you're looking at around $55-75. On the other end of the price list, the cheapest items are the glow baton ($15), the reusable water bottle ($25) and the tote bag ($30).
Here's the list of everything you can buy at the merch stand on the Eras Tour:
- Hoodies - $75
- Crewneck sweater - $65
- Quarter-zip Pullover - $65
- Long sleeve t-shirt - $55
- Tour t-shirts - $45
- Tie-dye tank top - $40
- 'Bewejeled' Bracelet - $35
- Canvas tour poster tapestry - $35
- Concert poster with show date and location - $30
- Tote bag - $30

Can you buy Eras Tour merch on Taylor Swift's website?
There's a handful of items in the merch truck that are pretty much the same as what Taylor is selling on her website. The black and beige t-shirts are currently available to buy on Taylor's merch site, as well as the Eras 'bejeweled' bracelet. There's also variations on several of the hoodies available too.
Unfortunately, the viral blue crewneck sweater that everyone has been scrambling to get their hands on is not available to buy online. The sweaters are so popular that fans are also warning others that people without tickets have been queuing up to buy them in bulk in order to sell online at a much, much higher price.
You can buy a similar hooded version of it online, though. And tbh, it looks just as great!
There's also different items on Taylor's website that are not available at the merch truck or any of the booths inside.

Can you buy Eras Tour merch inside the stadium?
Yep, according to reports from fans, there's also merch stands inside the stadiums too so you don't have to spend your time queuing in the long lines outside.
However, the booths inside will not have the same wide variety of items that the truck outside has. Fans have been able to get their hands on the cheaper items, such as water bottles, tote bags, posters and tour tees, but have had little luck finding the coveted sweaters and hoodies inside the venue.
What time does the Eras Tour merch truck stand open?
Based on several reports from fans who have already attended Taylor's shows, the merch truck opens at around 10am and closes between 6 and 7pm before the show begins.
Times may vary depending on the city though, so make sure you check the stadium's Twitter feed, and keep an eye on fellow Swifties who may be sharing any updates. (The truck also arrived a day early in Las Vegas giving fans the chance to get their merch the day before the concert.)
Taylor's first support act starts around 6:30pm and Taylor takes to the stage around 8pm. So if you want to make sure you're ready and in your seat with plenty of time to spare before Taylor kicks things off, make sure you plan ahead for the long queues at the merch truck!
