Adventure-filled combat speed game

Living up to its game title, Table Top Racing: World Tour presents over 90 unique race events that you can freely join in to test or even enhance your racing skills. The tournaments are spread around five themed locations wherein 20 tabletop race tracks are placed. To be precise, four routes are expected at each location. You can select the gameplay mode you wish to experience in the championships. 

This top-notch speed game grants you about six different gaming options along with a multitude of special events that are accessible to play for a limited time only. An eight-player PvP combat racing is available for online battle. Apart from a world-class environment, it also displays 12 ultra-cool race cars that vary from cult classics that are usually recommended for amateurs, Street Racers for PRO, and Supercars for expert drivers.

The game consists of highly competitive gamers that you shouldn’t underestimate. Instead, you must strategically utilize your eight power-up weapons as well as six weapon wheels that can boost your way to victory. Further adding to its charm are its realistic physics and exclusive soundtracks that are produced by Juice Recordings. However, it does lack more maps that can give you a good overview of the tracks.

Table Top Racing: World Tour Zooming To PC

From a former Wipeout chap, and friends

It's not the kind of tabletop gaming Rab usually writes about, although his inner child would surely appreciate. This is more like tabletop, floortop, walltop, outside-in-the-dirt-top, your-dog-top, your-sleeping-father-top, inappropriate-public-places-top gaming. Table Top here is shorthand, you see.

Table Top Racing: World Tour [ official website ] is a mix of Micro Machines and Mario Kart, from Wipeout co-creator Nick Burcombe and Playrise Digital. Now we know it's coming to Windows between April and June, after a few months exclusively on PS4. As if you could restrain toy cars! Those boring adults will never learn.

The follow-up to a mobile game, Table Top Racing: World Tour will see up to 8 players, with their choice from 12 customizable cars, race it out and battle it out with weapons and power-ups on 20 dynamic circuits, both offline against the AI and online. It's not clear if the PC version will share the console's splitscreen local multiplayer, but I like to believe that the world is not such a grim and hopeless place after all. Or maybe it's just the Micro Machines euphoria speaking.

That's pretty much it. But really, do you need anything else? I guess there's a licensed "Yo! Sushi" track if that's your kind of thing. The Micro Machines format is so simple and yet so genuinely fun and joyful that it baffles me how few games have gone for it over the years, and how many of those had just one or two flaws too many, which stopped them from really nailing it. Kotaku's review of the mobile Table Top Racing in 2013 called it "clumsy," complaining about insubstantial power-ups, unrewarding explosions and no sense of speed. We'll see if the big-screen version fares any better.

Anyway, my earliest memories of playing with toy cars bring me back to when I was 5 or 6. I was playing quite a bit of the first Gran Turismo on PS1, and I was gifted this tiny blue car, which I would race everywhere, no matter if it was around the house, on myself or on the walls of the doctor's waiting room. But I didn't focus on impossible jumps and backflips: I actually simulated realistic steering, appropriate modulation of brakes and throttle, and everything else I had learned from Gran Turismo. You could say I had a difficult childhood...

Table Top Racing: World Tour hits PC next week

Table Top Racing: World Tour, the Micro Machines-inspired racer from WipEout co-creator Nick Burcombe, comes out on PC via Steam on 26th May.

The PC release follows the game's launch on PlayStation 4 earlier this month. According to developer Playrise Digital, it's already been downloaded millions of times, no doubt boosted by being a PlayStation Plus title.

The Steam version costs £14.99, but there's an introductory discount of 15 per cent.

How do you make a racing game stand out from the crowd? Shrink it! Table Top Racing: World Tour from Playrise Digital is an arcade-style racer for Xbox One in which tiny cars race around tracks built on tables. With tons of events, sharp graphics, and online multiplayer, it's a much bigger game than the pint-sized cars doing the racing.

Table Top Racing's primary mode is called Championships . It consists of three primary divisions, each limited to a specific type of car (Cult Classics, Street Racers, and Supercars). Each of these divisions offers four cups, all with multiple events per cup. The final event in each cup is a Finale in which you must score the best over the course of three races. The losers get thrown in a trash can, poor sods. All of these events have three stars to earn, adding replay value.

A second, smaller campaign called Special Events consists of 56 races spread across the three car classes. These events are locked to one specific car each. Cars cost money (earned in any mode), so you'll need to spend time winning races in other modes before you can afford to buy everything needed to enter all of the Special Events.

Table Top Racing features sixteen unlicensed cars to buy and drive. They all have stubby, stylized bodies resembling toys. Each car has four stats to upgrade and an overall stat limit. When playing through Championships mode, you might as well just buy the best car in each class. They have the highest stat caps. But you'll need to get them all eventually, if you want to complete Special Events mode.

Cars can also be equipped with one of seven tire types. These provide various effects such as enhanced drifting, extra money for weapon hits, and jumping. Each wheel type costs more than the one before it, so you'll probably want to unlock them in order as you progress through the game.

Multiplayer

Table Top Racing has no split-screen multiplayer, which is nigh inexcusable in an indie racing game. A game like this, featuring tiny, toy-like racers, really should support local multiplayer for the kids. Thankfully, this one at least has online multiplayer – not always a given with indie racers.

Multiplayer lobbies support up to eight players. A world map helpfully displays the approximate location of each player, so you can tell when someone from another country joins the game. The host can set a variety of options, such as track, route, laps, and more – a significant advantage over Riptide GP: Renegade 's option-free online multiplayer. Also an advantage, you earn money and XP across all modes.

Players tend to drive dirty and bump into each other quite a lot, in my experience. It can be frustrating when someone knocks you off the table, setting you back several seconds. I wish car contact could be turned off, but perhaps that would go against the spirit of the game.

Achievements

The Xbox One version of Table Top Racing features 38 Achievements worth a total of 1,000 Gamerscore. These include the standard completion goals such as winning every event, buying every car, and fully upgrading every car.

There are some fun hidden ones, like blocking a missile with an EMP. You'll have to win 20 online races, but that can thankfully be done with a friend in a private lobby. The most challenging Achievements involve finding every hidden coin on all 8 tracks.

Overall Impression

Table Top Racing: World Tour is a fairly well-made racing game with a fun theme. Driving around on tracks filled with oversized real-world objects is inherently fun and different. The tracks also look fantastic, with lots of bright colors and details. Online multiplayer is strong and has an active player base at present, also a plus.

On the downside, this is yet another indie game that stretches a small number of tracks (eight) across way too many events. At least the developers added multiple routes for each track, which is more than Vector Unit did with Riptide GP: Renegade .

I also found the car handling to be less than perfect, even with fully upgraded cars. They slide around too much, making tight turns harder than they should be. You get used to the handling, but it still detracts a bit from the game's arcade-y nature.

• 65 DualShockers It's a huge shame that levels tend to repeat themselves occasionally and are rather short, but this is likely just a product of the game having its roots as a mobile title. Despite that, the simplicity keeps it friendly and does feel somewhat old school in terms of handling like in PS1 games like Wipeout, and Formula 1. If you?re into the good ol’ PlayStation racing titles such as these, then Table Top Racing: World Tour – Nitro Edition might be for you.
• 60 God is a Geek There’s a lot to like about this game really, from its chibi versions of real cars (although unlicenced, so they have names like Fauxrari) to its great track design and abundance of event types, but a game like this is always going to struggle on a Nintendo console. Especially when so much of its content is locked behind awkward progression in races that can be ruined by annoyingly aggressive AI. It’s difficult to recommend when most Nintendo Switch owners already have Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing makes its return in less than two months, but its lower price point may entice a few people into buying.
• 75 Nintendo Enthusiast Though not a perfect game, I really enjoyed my time with Table Top Racing: World Tour – Nitro Edition. Even as an accomplished racer I found some events challenging. There are definitely a few difficulty bumps but nothing impossible. The array of events (pure race, battle race, pursuit, eliminator, overtake, checkpoint, hot lap, time trial, drift) helps to keep the action fresh. The art design is fun and really helps to sell the idea of racing toy cars. If you ever had a passing interest in the Micro Machines games or like kart racers, then you should consider adding Table Top Racing: World Tour – Nitro Edition to your game library.

And that includes the ‘fine’ Switch owners seemingly have to pay for a game that now costs ten bucks more than it did when it launched three years ago. What we’re left with is a competent arcade racer that plays just as well as it looks. However, wrapped around this refined core is a layer of overly familiar tracks that do little to sell players on TTR’s core premise. Weaving in and out of humongous aerosol cans, dinner rolls, and sushi platters is a fun novelty but fails to add a dynamic worthy of praise outside its obvious aesthetic application. Although very enjoyable in small doses, Table Top Racing: World Tour doesn’t carry quite enough substance to make it past the finish line with flying colours.

The Games Machine

Table Top Racing: World Tour is not a bad game per se, but it lacks the "spark" we felt playing classics of the genre like Re-Volt or MicroMachines. There's a lot of content to go through, tons of events and championships to win, but at the same time there's lot of repetitiveness, and the AI-controlled cars can be real jerks. The biggest flaw, however, is the lack of a split-screen multiplayer mode.

Table Top Racing: World Tour feels like it could be a fun multiplayer battle racer, but it falls flat. The gameplay seems stuck in first gear, the races are too quick and easy, and – most damaging of all – the game has no real personality of its own. Sure, it'll probably provide you with a cheap thrill for 10 minutes or so, but look any further, and you'll realise that this is just the chassis of a far better game.

Speeding around colorful tracks launching missiles, dodging oil slicks, and earning coins is something we've seen countless times in the past, but TTR gets most of it right so it still feels like a race worth winning.
