Camel trekking in Morocco is one of the most iconic travel experiences you can have. A Sahara Desert tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Riding a camel into the Sahara Desert to spend a night under the stars in a desert camp will also be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

What to Expect from the Sahara Region

It is a misconception the Moroccan Sahara is entirely made up of dunes. The Sahara, the most extensive desert in the world, starts in Morocco with a flat, arid, rocky landscape. A mixture of sand and rock.

Sahara Desert Tours - Camel trekking in Morocco

The Sahara region is also an exciting mix of scenic gorges and beautiful oasis towns. Many of these areas are set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, which you need to cross to get to the desert from Marrakech or Fez. It is a vast area, but worth it if you have sufficient time to travel the distances involved.

Where do Sahara Desert Tours Leave From

Covering an area of 9.4 million square kilometres, the Sahara engulfs most of North Africa. Few places in the world compare. The Sahara covers Morocco’s western border.

The two main sand dunes tourists visit and where the Sahara tours leave from are Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga (erg meaning dune). While each offers a unique experience, the most popular is Erg Chebbi with dunes reaching over 520 feet high.

Erg Chigaga is a little more off the beaten track. As it is over 60km’s from the nearest road, there are fewer facilities, so it offers a much more rustic experience. The trip there will be longer and more testing as well.

Erg Chebbi is more accessible, only 30 Km from the town of Merzouga , close to the border of Algeria. There are modern hotels and some small Auberge’s (small inns or motels) dotted along the remote drive between Merzouga and Erg Chebbi for those who want to break the long trip up.

How far is the Sahara Desert from Marrakech and Fez

  • Marrakech is approx 600km from Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes and approximately 360km from Zagora, near the Er Chigaga dunes.
  • Fez is approx 470km from Merzouga and 670km from Zagora.

While the distances don’t seem that long, much of the driving is over mountain passes and on basic roads. Travelling from Marrakech or Fez to the Sahara will take a full day at best.

We travelled to the Sahara Desert as part of a 3-day road trip from Marrakech to Fez .

Preparing for Camel Trekking

When you arrive at Erg Chebbi, you will be asked to take ONLY what you need in a small bag as you must carry all of your belongings and required water for the night on your camel.  Our bags were small as instructed. Although, no one said anything about heavy. Who said you couldn’t enjoy a few cheeky reds in the Sahara?!

You will then be fitted with a camel and not so formally acquainted with your trusty steed. You will mount and try to stay mounted while the animal stands up. A very strange motion at first and not so graceful. Then, it’s off into the dunes of the Sahara.

Note: There are in fact no camels in the Sahara Desert, only ‘Dromedary’. This is the correct name for the one-humped mode of desert transport. Only the two-humped variety are called camels.

Sahara Desert dunes annd camels resting

To our surprise (and slight relief) the camels are tied together with a rope and walk in line following a guide. Much like the camel caravans used on the historic trade routes. Some might find this comforting while others may have been expecting more of a solo affair. Nonetheless, this is not a failsafe system.

I watched as my camel expertly undid the knot in the rope with his teeth. Once freed, he slowed to ensure a good distance between us and the group and casually started heading in another direction. As the rest of the caravan dutifully followed the guide across the rolling dunes of the Sahara, my camel and I strayed further and further from the group. Thankfully my calls for help were eventually heard, and I was rescued and refastened to the group.

I am guessing this was not an isolated incident as they were sure to put my camel in the middle of the group from then on.

Camel Trekking in the Desert

When you first head into the desert, the enormity of the harsh terrain, the continually changing colours of the sand and incredible stillness is both overwhelming and peaceful. The same could not be said for my camel, there was no peace or silence just noises and smells coming from each end.

For a few hours, you can enjoy the surreal landscape and marvel at the existence of tiny Berber camps tucked away beneath the mountainous dunes. Once you start to get the feel of the ungainly motion of a camel, the ride is relatively comfortable. Although after the 2-3 hour ride to our overnight camp, we were all glad to stretch our legs.

Sahara Desert Tents

Overnight in a Sahara Desert Camp

A night in a desert camp, under the stars, experiencing the Sahara Desert at night is a truly unique experience.

Our accommodation was one of the Berber Nomad camps that dot the Sahara. The Nomad campsites are made up of a circle of traditional woollen tents with a central fire pit. It is a simple affair with basic sleeping and toilet facilities. Each tent is lined with woven rugs and small sleeping mattresses on the floor.

Blankets are provided which are usually sufficient. Although, the Sahara temperature plummets at night so be prepared with warm clothing. You may even like to bring a small sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially during the winter months between November and March.

Sahara Desert nomad tents Morocco

Your nomad guides will prepare a typical Moroccan dinner . Most likely a hearty Tagine served with mint tea around the central campfire. If you fancy a tipple with your meal, make sure you bring it with you. We were smart enough to pack a bottle of red wine.

After dinner, your hosts will entertain you with traditional Berber music which they will encourage you to try your hand at.

Sunrise in the Sahara

Believe it or not, the highlight of any Sahara Desert tour is sunrise.

If you only spend one night in the Sahara you will most likely head back to the main hotel early in the morning, so it’s an early start and a cold one. The hotel will serve you breakfast and you can take a shower and use the pool before you head off.

At what feels like the middle of the night our trusted nomad guide wakes us by playing a small set of traditional symbols. We rug up and load our camels again to set off in complete darkness. In the cold and the dark, you start to wonder about the sense of it all and then the sun begins to rise.

You are suddenly grateful for the early start and for the long journey to get to the Sahara. The magnificent landscape of changing colours as the sun eases its way up over the Sahara dunes. The sunrise is even more spectacular than the sunset.

Tip: Don’t forget to charge all of your devices before you head off on a Sahara Desert tour. Not many of the desert camps will have charging facilities.

What to Pack for a Night in the Sahara Desert

  • A small backpack or bag – You can only take with you what you can carry in a small bag on your camel. We travel with a lightweight, foldable pack that can be shoved into our luggage when we are not using it, and it doesn’t take up too much room.

NeatPack Durable, Foldable Nylon Backpack / Daypack with Security Zippers, 20L - Navy

  • A windbreaker or light jacket for the cooler nights and mornings. If visiting between October and March, you may want a more substantial fleece and maybe some light underlayers.
  • Warm beanie – You may want to sleep in this too if it is really cold.
  • Comfortable pants or jeans to prevent chaffing while riding the camel. Leggings are also suitable for the girls as they are perfect for sleeping in.
  • Lightweight, breathable tops for the daytime. Tees and maybe a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection. Remember, you are only staying one or two nights so will not need lots of changes of clothes.
  • Appropriate shoes – sneakers or hiking boots are best. Sandals or flip-flops are no good for riding the camels or for climbing dunes.
  • A headscarf to block the sun and dust. You may want to bring a cap or wide brim hat as well.

Electronics and Gear

  • A small travel flashlight or even better a headlamp to use at night at the campsite. It is very dark after lights out, so it is helpful to be hands-free when you are packing in the morning and for the toilets during the night.
  • Camera Protection – sand is your camera gear’s worst enemy so it would pay to have some ziplock bags keeping any electronics safe. A dry pack is also useful for this, especially when climbing the dunes. If you have expensive camera gear, a special casing might be worthwhile.
  • Extra camera batteries and a large capacity external charger . Especially if like us, you take a lot of photos and video. Don’t forget your charging cords,

Anker PowerCore 20,100mAh Portable Charger Ultra High Capacity Power Bank with 4.8A Output and PowerIQ Technology, External Battery Pack for iPhone, iPad & Samsung Galaxy & More (Black)

Personal Items

  • Water – Consider at least a couple of litres, if not more.
  • Basic toiletry kit – facial wipes, small sunscreen, chapstick with sunscreen, toothbrush, toothpaste, mini deodorant, antibacterial hand wipes.
  • Any medications you might require.
  • If you want to have a drink with your evening meal, you may have to bring your own alcohol. Check with your tour group in advance so you can be prepared. And remember, you can only bring what you can carry.

Camels in the Moroccan Desert: A Fascinating Encounter

Embarking on a Moroccan desert tour guarantees a captivating encounter with the emblematic camels. As you venture into the heart of the Moroccan Desert, these majestic creatures will grace your path. Amidst their natural habitat, you’ll witness camels engaged in various roles: transporting goods with unwavering diligence, exuding an air of purposeful labour, and patiently awaiting the opportunity to offer you a memorable camel riding experience.

Discovering the Majestic Presence of Camels

The thing about camels is they are in fact more intimidating up close than they are on a television screen.  Camels, whether they have one hump or two, are pretty large.  And they are not like dogs who endear themselves to you.  Camels are aloof, they are proud, and there are those who think they are arrogant!

Mounting a Camel: An Unforgettable Experience Assisted by Guides

Actually, camels are fascinating creatures. Firstly, if you get to ride a camel in Morocco, and we really suggest you do, you will have assistance.  Camels kneel down for you to mount them and it ’ s an easy process but it can be a bit unnerving. A guide will always be there to keep the camel in place, and to help you get up.  Once you ’ re up, it ’ s a bit like balancing on a horse.  There ’ s a hump for you to hold, and of course, there are reins too so you can balance and feel secure.

Exploring the Desert: Spectacular Scenery and Nomadic Feel

Riding through the desert on a camel is incredible. You feel like a Bedouin or a Nomad. The scenery is amazing – red sand, dunes for miles, the dark blue sky, and unless you ride to an oasis which you may well do, there is nothing around.  Of course, when you do a camel desert safari, there is in fact plenty around, you just don ’ t see it easily.  Guides carry delicious snacks, drinks and will set up camp for you in a shady spot (tea stop, water stop, lunch stop) in a luxurious and adventurous manner.  You may be going for an hour ride, a half-day ride, or on an overnight safari.  There are many options for our Moroccan camel tours, and they are all amazing.

The Amazing Adaptations of Camels: Survival in the Desert

A group of camels is called a caravan of camels, and we have all seen photographs as they walk through the desert in a long line, sometimes up to 1000 camels at once.  Camels were used as carriers of goods, including salt, cotton, tea and gold, and were an important part of the Trans-Saharan trade route.  Their specially adapted body features, eyes, eyelids and hair, protect them from the sun and they can walk for days without water. Their humps are filled with fat, not water as previously thought, which will keep them going for days.

Leisurely Camel Rides: Capturing Memories in the Desert Landscapes

While camels can demonstrate swiftness, your journey atop them during a Morocco camel tour unfolds slowly and leisurely so the journey is safe and you can take in the beautiful desert landscapes. Give your camera to the guide so he can get good pics of you perched on top of a camel, and don ’ t forget to dress appropriately.  Long pants so your legs don ’ t get scratched, a long sleeved shirt to protect you from the sun, and of course, a local Moroccan scarf or turban to cover your head from the sun!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it like riding a camel.

Embarking on a camel ride is a truly remarkable experience. While not the most comfortable mode of transportation, the feeling of being atop a camel as it gracefully traverses the sandy terrain is awe-inspiring. You can sense their strength and magnificence with every step, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape and desert. This unforgettable adventure will leave you with a genuine sense of exploration and adventure.

Are camels stronger than horses?

Determining the relative strength between camels and horses is complex, as various factors must be considered, including animal size, weight, climate, and terrain. On average, camels appear to possess greater strength than horses.

Camels have evolved to endure harsh conditions and sustain themselves for extended periods without sustenance. Their ability to bear heavy loads over long distances in hot climates is remarkable. Conversely, horses are better adapted to colder environments and are less efficient in the long-distance transportation of goods.

Is there a weight limit for camel riding?

While there isn’t a specific weight limit for camel riding, it is advisable to adhere to general guidelines. Typically, riders are recommended to weigh no more than 220 pounds. Children are often permitted to ride camels, provided they meet the appropriate weight and height requirements. In Morocco, a popular destination for camel riding, children are generally required to be between five and seven years old.

Are camels safe to ride?

Camel riding in Morocco is generally safe, and it is common for children as young as two or three years old to participate. Camels have a gentle nature and have served as reliable working animals in Morocco for centuries. Their ability to endure long journeys in the desert without fatigue, as well as their resilience in harsh conditions, make them suitable for various terrains. Additionally, camels are sure-footed, which adds to their suitability for navigating rocky landscapes.

Camel Riding and Desert Camping in the Sahara

Camel Trekking and Desert Camping in the Sahara Desert

DO: Take Some Time to Relax Before You Go

Our itinerary centered around an overnight camping experience in the Sahara Desert, bookended by camel rides that would take us to and from our overnight accommodations. Our starting point was a kasbah situated at the edge of the desert, and we had about 90 minutes to relax before our departure. We used most of our time to unwind from a long day of driving and exploring, and I am glad we did. It gave us both a much needed chance to decompress, process all of the incredible things we had seen, and prepare to fully embrace our next experience. I took a shower since we wouldn’t have access to one in the desert, so I felt refreshed when the time came to leave for our camp.

DON’T: Overpack

When we arrived in Merzouga, we had access to a private room in the kasbah where we would leave our excess luggage for the night. Adam and I each took a backpack with us and left our suitcases behind, as suitcases of any kind are much too big and bulky to make the journey. I only took a sweatshirt, a scarf, water, my phone, and a portable battery pack to charge the phone; I opted to sleep in the clothes I wore out, which meant a t-shirt and baggy harem pants. Adam brought his camera and some shorts to wear at bedtime. We were tempted to add other items to our backpacks (what if we wanted headphones for music? Would we want flip flops once we got to camp?), but we resisted temptation and were ultimately glad we did. The camping experience passes by quickly—we were glad to only carry the basics.

DO: Wear the Right Clothes for Camel Riding

When it comes to camel rides, most journeys take between one and two hours depending on the location of the camp, so wearing the right clothing is a big part of how comfortable the trip will be. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

► Pick shoes that won’t fall off

Adam wore sneakers, and I wore sandals with Velcro straps that fit snugly on my foot. Your legs will dangle when you’re on the camel (don’t expect stirrups like you might find on a horse!), and flip flops or loose-fitting shoes are very likely to fall off.

► Wear loose-fitting pants

Your legs will come in contact with the camel and could chafe from the friction, so shorts won’t be the best choice. Tight pants, including jeans, may be uncomfortable and limit your movement when mounting or dismounting your camel.

► Consider a long sleeved shirt to protect yourself from the sun

A loose-fitting t-shirt and some sunscreen is a good alternative.

► Bring a scarf or a buff in case it’s windy

On our way to the camp we enjoyed some nice, calm weather, but on the way back to the kasbah the next morning it was much windier, and we were glad to have a layer to protect our faces so we didn’t have to breathe in sand.

► Wear sunglasses

It should go without saying, but sun glare happens in the desert!

DON’T: Leave Until You’re Comfortable on Your Camel

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

“Can I sit closer to the bar?” I asked, shifting so I could slide to the front of the hump.

“Behind the hump,” my guide said. I frowned but rationalized that it might be bad for the camel’s back to sit to the front of the hump, so I stayed put. The guide stepped forward and coaxed the camel from a kneeling to a standing position. As the camel lumbered to his feet, I gasped and lunged forward to steady myself.

“You’re OK,” the guide said. I wondered if that was a question, but it seemed to be a statement instead since he was already helping to secure Adam’s backpack to his camel. I shifted a bit, trying to will my arms to grow a bit longer. They stubbornly remained at their insufficient length.

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

To fast forward a bit, the next morning—before daybreak—we boarded our camels to return to the kasbah. I slid onto Sand Rover, behind the hump, and exaggeratedly lunged toward the metal bar.

“I can’t reach the bar very well,” I told the camel guide. “What do I do?” The guide looked at me, stretched as long as I could get, and shrugged.

“Sit in front of the hump,” he said. Somewhat stunned at how easy that was, I shifted myself over the hump.

“Better?” asked my guide.

“Better!” I told him. And then I wanted to kick myself—instead of suffering all the way to camp, I could have just made a bigger deal about my needs so my guide could have known he needed to accommodate them. I would have saved myself a lot of discomfort if I had been more assertive. Underneath me, I am pretty sure Sand Rover was rolling his eyes.

DO: Take Plenty of Water

Although we were served a very delicious tagine dinner and plenty of mint tea at the camp, water was not provided. Adam and I had three bottles between us, and I still wanted more. Don’t underestimate just how dry the desert is—an hour long camel ride can absolutely dehydrate you!

DO: Have Realistic Expectations About Your Accommodations

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

Overall, we thought our camp was comfortable while being both modern primitive in all the right ways. Keep in mind this is the desert, though, so expect sand to wind up everywhere—in the bed, in your backpacks, in your shoes, and in my case even my ears at one point. Also, the sand is warm when you arrive but quickly cools off, so know that your feet will be chilly if you walk barefoot in the morning!

DON’T: Go to Bed Too Early

When we arrived at camp, the sun was already starting to set. Our guide made and then served us a delicious meal, and Adam and I had a great time chatting with the other travelers in our group—two fun, smart students from China studying in the UK. It was after 10:00 PM when our camel guide told us he would wake us up around 4:30 the next morning, so everyone decided to get some sleep. I joined Adam in our camp for about ten minutes but found it much too warm to rest, so I moved outside and lay down on some of the mats our guide had placed in the sand.

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

I checked my phone. It was 2:36 AM. It occurred to me then that I couldn’t claim I had slept under the stars in the Sahara Desert if I didn’t actually sleep.

The balance of my night was spent dozing off for a few minutes at a time until shortly before 4:30, when I crawled back into the tent where Adam was just starting to wake up. He had spent the night tossing and turning in the heat, so we were both exhausted but happy to have had the experience.

Getting some sleep during a desert camping experience is advisable, but don’t go to bed too early. Don’t miss the silence, the twinkling stars, or the tranquility that can only come from a night spent far from distraction.

DO: Enjoy the Ride

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

We woke up and left camp early because we wanted to see the sunrise, and we were not disappointed. Just as the sun peeked over the horizon, our camel caravan paused at the top of a high dune. We had front row seats to watch as the sky changed from light blue to pink to bright blue and the golden orb floated higher and higher overhead. Adam took dozens of photos while we stood still, but I left my phone alone and focused on just watching the changing sky. Not long after the sun was clearly above the dunes, as I considered how incredible the moment was, Sand Rover yawned and rotated himself away from the sunrise. The camel just behind me loudly belched in my direction. I laughed; maybe no moment is that perfect.

Because my ride back was much more comfortable (and I was sitting completely upright—not stretched out over the hump!) I was much more connected to the view, the scenery, and the experience. It was truly unforgettable.

DON’T: Expect a Smooth Ride

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

DO: Research Travel Insurance in Advance

There were moments during my camel riding experience when I caught myself considering that I could stop the pain by just falling off Sand Rover’s back and landing in the golden dunes below us. The image of me falling to the ground made me chuckle, but the truth is camel riding can lead to injury—even severe injury—if an accident happens. Coupled with the fact Merzouga is in a pretty remote part of the country, I was happy we had a good travel insurance policy in case we needed emergency help. We purchased a plan from World Nomads before leaving for Morocco. It’s a great idea to research your options and pick the right plan for you.

Do: Tip the Guide

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

Our guide paused our trek once in each direction to offer to take photos of us on the camels in the desert, and he and another guide cooked a delicious meal for us for our dinner. They went to bed after us and woke up before us. We were really pleased with the service we received, and we both agreed we wanted to offer a tip. If you, too, have a great experience, don’t forget to pack Dirham in your overnight bag to offer to your guide when your trek is over.

Thinking back to my camel riding and Sahara camping experience, I have to admit that my idealized daydream didn’t completely come true. If I were to do it all again, I would probably enjoy it much more thanks to lessons learned from this experience. Even with the bumps, the discomfort, and the mostly sleepless night, it was a real highlight from our trip to Morocco. If the Sahara Desert beckons you, too, keep these do’s and don’ts in mind—and be sure to savor every second of laying under the expansive sky under billions of shining, twinkling lights.

Here are even more photos that captured our experience!

Reviews about the Overnight Camel Trekking Merzouga

Great Overnight Camel Trekking Merzouga Desert

We did a camel trek with overnight in the desert. I set it up way in advance with Said who was very responsive. He even helped me with planning the rest of the Morocco trip. He met us at the designated spot from where we drove to the hotel. Since we had 3 hrs before the start of the trek he let us use the swimming pool. Kids especially loved seeing the herd of camels while swimming.

The trek itself was great. I was surprised that my 7 yr old rode his own camel but he loved that. Hassan was very helpful the whole time, even stopped to take pictures of us all. The tents we slept in were luxurious.

I was shocked. I anticipated very basic accommodations but instead, we had a full suite, with a shower, toilet, electricity, huge dining tent, sitting couches and chairs outside, fire pit, even chairs on top of dunes (Little prince style).

Food was very good, plenty of water available for all, music and dancing to Berber/Nomad tunes. Views were of course spectacular. Highly recommend booking with MTA. We will be back during the cooler month to do a 2 night Camel trek.

Overnight in a Berber Tent after a camel trek!!!

This was an amazing experience; we rode a camel for 2 hours at sunset, then we ate Tajine and after the same chat with Hassan (a very nice guide, could help to understand a little more the berbere culture), we went to sleep under the stars (it was quite warm at night), then we wake up early in the morning to go back to Hassi Lbaied and stopped in the middle of nothing just to see the sunrise behind the dunes.

Highy recommend this experience with these people!

Dunes Right Outside of Lodging

The beautiful Sahara, Erg Chebbi, Morocco's very own part of the Sahara Desert. It really is beautiful.

We did the compulsory overnight in the desert and it was fantastic, climbing the dunes, watching the sunset and sunrise, and if your game staying up really late in the hope of shooting stars.

Stwfang

Wow. Watch the night stars, and ride a camel at sunrise over the dunes.

Total Bucket List Experience.

Since this is such a remote location, I would highly recommend watching the night stars. They are untouched by any urban light pollution. At daybreak, ride a camel to watch sunrise over the sand dunes.

Our Berber guides were fantastic; they took many pictures of us with our camels, wrote our names in Arabic in the sand, and took their time explaining their lifestyle and culture to ignorant Americans.

Truly a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Thanks for everything.

Beautiful night in dunes Erg Chebbi

If you stay in Erfoud take a trip to Erg Chebbi. If you have a rent a car, you can drive to the small village of Hassi Labied before Merzouga, stay there for 2 nights and explore these beautiful dunes. Try good food by Berbers and enjoy nature!.

Highly recommend this Overnight Camel Trekking Merzouga

Best camel ride in Morocco's desert!

My camel ride experience in the mesmerizing Moroccan desert was genuinely unforgettable. The camel ride across the Erg-Chebbi sand dunes was like watching a movie, it's a fantastic view of the Sahara desert. Our guide Said was beneficial and informative and we got to learn from him many things about the Sahara desert and the nomadic life. on the way to the desert camp, we stopped to watch a fantastic sunset of the dunes.

Our camel trek experience in Merzouga with the Mouhou Tours team was amazing and we would recommend it to everyone.

Highly recommend it!

Hmad made this adventure!!!! He was a great guide, knowledgeable, kind, and funny. We cannot say enough kind words about him! This is a great way to see Morocco away from busy tourist sites. We did three days Camel tour from Marrakesh to Fes. Note that this is not a three-day camel (dromedary) ride. The time is primarily spent in the car with your guide. There are a lot of interesting stops and beautiful places to visit. We loved this portion of our trip and highly recommend it. Absolutely beats riding around in a large coach bus and seeing the same countryside. There are so many things to see in Morocco beyond medinas and shopping. When booking, be sure to ask for Hmad!

Well-organized journey!

Morocco Deserts: My Unforgettable Camel Ride in the Sahara

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

European travel writer Iuliana Marchian , shares her experience discovering the magic of the Moroccan Desert and embarking on an adventurous, epic four-day camel ride experience through the Sahara.

The Magical Moroccan Desert

I am always looking to discover far-flung places, local traditions, and customs, untouched nature, and unique adventures, and reading about the Sahara Desert has always triggered my desire to explore it. Being from Romania , I’m drawn to warm countries, sandy dunes, and lush palm oases, so Morocco seemed the perfect place to satisfy my longing, especially in the middle of the European winter.

Spanning several countries in Africa, the western part of the Sahara starts in Southern Morocco, near the border to Algeria. One of the most remote parts of the Moroccan Desert , where you will find the largest, wildest, and the highest dunes in the country is Erg Chigaga. Located Between the towns of Zagora and M’Hammid Lghzlan, most of the region can only be reached by jeep, but its most pristine trails can be experienced by trekking or riding a camel. As camel caravans were the main means of transportation across the Sahara in the past, riding a camel is the best, most sustainable way to explore and live in the desert for a couple of days.

My Camel Ride in the Sahara

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

Camel trekking to the most remote part of the Moroccan Desert is without doubt one of the most authentic and challenging experiences when traveling to North Africa. Before starting my journey I contacted Mohammed, a local guide from Marrakesh who was recommended to me. I told him I wanted a multi-day camel trek in the Erg Chigaga region and he suggested several trails – easier short ones as well as longer, more demanding treks. I chose the longest and most challenging one, a four-day circuit that included a climb to the top of the highest dune in Morocco.

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

On the first day of the trek, Mohamed picked up me and another traveler from Zagora around noon. A jeep took us from Zagora close to Foun Zguid, where our trail started. In the middle of nowhere, two camels and their caregiver – Lahssen, were patiently waiting for us in the shade of the only acacia tree. We had a quick lunch under the frail tree, then set off to cross the vast Faija Plateau to climb up in the Jbel Bani Mountains, part of the National Park d’Iriqui.

The Jbel Bani are small mountains with rocky terrain and the scenery is stunning arid reddish. A few random acacia trees and some bushes dotted the landscape. The footpath snaked between large, black boulders up to Oum Laachar Pass, from where we gently climbed down along a narrow, dry valley with a rocky riverbed, the Oued Lemhasser Valley. When we started the descent, the entire desert spanned in front of us – a stellar view of the expansive area we would trek for the following days. No settlements, no people. Just some nomad Berber camps and dunes. Infinite dunes.

Day 2

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

On the second day of the trek, we walked along the Ouad Mhasser Valley , a 12 miles long and sinuous valley bringing us close to the border with Algeria. An arid landscape, with red soil and isolated dry bushes surrounded us. The rare sight of an acacia tree loftily marked the horizon as a sign of life. Around noon, we reached Tighrghrin Oasis, a fairy-tale paradise with lush palm trees and a freshwater spring. We would have loved to stay longer in this desert garden but we still had a long way to go.

We continued along the dry Ouad Mhasser Valley, which had been without water after a long torrid summer. Lonely palm trees and bushes appeared here and there along the valley. The footpath followed the edge of the valley until we reached the camp of a nomad family near Afrokh Oasis.

A Berber woman and many children warmly greeted us in the camp. They served us Moroccan tea made on embers, ripe figs from the nearby oasis, fresh goat milk, and warm bread freshly baked in the earth oven. We sat down on a Berber rug under the shade of an acacia to enjoy our basic, but so delicious food.

Encountering nomads was the best way to learn about their lifestyle in the harshness of the desert. Nomads live in the high mountains during torrid summers and only come down to the desert areas in winter when temperatures drop. They set their temporary camp near an oasis with a permanent source of water so that their goats and camels have food. For primary food – like rice, couscous, flour, and spices, they go to the nearest settlement by camels or donkeys and stock up for a whole month.

Drinking tea made on embers was a unique experience but seeing how nomads bake their bread was even more exciting. In the ‘kitchen’ tent, a little girl sat squatted and baked bread in an earth oven. The girl extracted round pieces of dough already prepared from a cloth and quickly placed them in the oven on a hot metal countertop. She had remarkable speed and dexterity manipulating them with two metal sticks. Then she turned each loaf on both sides and when it was baked, and quickly slammed it into another cloth. In a couple of minutes, the steaming bread was ready to eat and incredibly delicious.

It was hard to leave the nomads’ camp after enjoying this treatment, but we had to reach the golden dunes before dusk. After we left Afrokh Oasis, the rocky terrain gradually became sandy and the camels started to sink into the soft sand. In the evening, we arrived at a camp set in a small depression between the dunes of Erg Chigaga.

On the morning of the third day, we hiked to the top of the highest dune in Morocco, Erg Chigaga (984-1312 feet high). The dunes were a velvety golden color and full of countless ripples. From the top, the whole chain of dunes spanned in front of us for over 25 miles. The sand ridges were still untouched early morning and the desert breeze left gentle traces on the sand surface.

From Erg Chigaga, we travelled parallel to the dunes through an infinite flat field, stretching between the mountains we left behind the previous day and the dunes we had just climbed. A true desert scenery: the same scenery for hours. The line of the horizon changed a little from time to time as new dunes appeared in sight. Late in the afternoon, we reached a new group of dunes in Bogarne and spent our last night in the desert in a Berber camp.

On the last day of the trek, we left Bogarne Dunes in the morning and set off on a flat, endless route. We gradually left behind the big dunes and the terrain became rocky, a straight line on the horizon. The camels walked sluggishly but had a constant walking pace for hours. At noon, we reached Ouad Naeme, a flat area with rocks, small dunes, and a few shady trees. We had our last cooked lunch in the desert as we witnessed a herd of wild camels cross at the horizon, like a scene from a National Geographic documentary. Then, we waited for a jeep to pick us up and drive us the 6 miles of the trail. Here we spent the night in a desert resort and dined at an authentic Berber restaurant in the border town of M’Hamid Lghzlan.

Curated Insider Recommendations

desert safari morocco camel ride and overnight in desert

Camel Trekking through the desert is the best way to experience the immensity of this barren scenery, the customs of nomad Berbers, and discover what life was like along the trading caravan routes in the past. It isn’t always the easiest, pampering experience, but it is truly an out of this world experience, I will treasure forever.

Here are some highlights and insider tips:

  • We slept in Berber tents throughout the trek. You’ll be relieved to know nowadays these permanent camps have modern facilities, plus an additional million-star dark sky. Some of them are even set in the shade of a palm oasis and have a pool.
  • All meals are cooked on a campfire or a gas portable stove while admiring the unbeatable desert scenery. It was the most delicious and healthy food of my life and has a unique flavor and smell. Berbers know how to cook.
  • There are wells with water in the desert but only camels drink from them. The same camels carried our bottled water, which was more than enough throughout the trek.
  • High Temperatures aren’t a big issue in the winter months and drinking hot Moroccan tea always helps the human body to adapt to heat. This is a long-standing tradition of Berber tribes (and in Morocco, too) and it is how they survive in the desert even during the summer months.
  • Everyone on the trek had their own camel. Most of the time, I preferred to ride the camel to take pictures and get a better view of the scenery from the top of the saddle. It’s possible to alternate walking and riding the camel, but riding especially in the sandy areas is recommended.

The Merzouga desert: a camel tour and camping in the Sahara of Morocco!

Near the city of Merzouga, in the southeast of Morocco, lies the Erg Chebbi desert, part of the Sahara. Merzouga is the base for a desert tour by camel or by 4×4. Or how about a camping trip in which you sleep in a beautiful camp in the Sahara! In this blog, we tell you all about our experiences with a multi-day desert tour including a camel safari + overnight stay in luxury tents in the desert of Morocco!

The Erg Chebbi desert near Merzouga in Morocco!

When you think of Morocco, you naturally also think of the Sahara. This vast desert is located in the south of Morocco. One of the gates to this deserts is the city of Merzouga. Merzouga itself is not very special, you certainly don’t have to stay here long. However, this is the place from where you visit the Erg Chebbi desert (part of the Sahara).

In Erg Chebbi, you can do all kinds of fun activities. For example, it is possible to stay overnight in the desert while camping in a Berber desert camp. Or how about making a camel ride or explore the sandy hills on a 4×4. In this travel blog, we tell you everything you need to know about the Erg Chebbi Desert near Merzouga! How do you get to Merzouga and the Sahara? How do you book a camel tour and desert trip? What do you pack for a desert trekking? We also share our experiences with a two-day desert trip where we camped in the Erg Chebbi desert!

Which part of the Sahara do you visit in Morocco?

Which desert is the most beautiful or best for a camel ride combined with camping? We wondered that too! Because it is difficult to find good information about this, I try to answer this question with this blog.

Erg Chebbi vs. Erg Chegaga

As you can read above, we slept in the Erg Chebbi desert , which is located near Merzouga, all the way in eastern Morocco. A little more in the middle of Morocco is another desert, the Erg Chegaga desert.

Erg Chegaga desert

The Erg Chegaga desert is said to be beautiful. The sand dunes are less high here (especially in the beginning). In addition, you can not just drive to the Erg Chegaga desert. The last two hours you exchange your normal car for a 4X4 (four-wheel drive). This means that the Erg Chegaga desert is a lot more expensive to visit.

Because the distances here are much longer, we do not recommend doing a camel ride in Erg Chegaga, as you cannot go deep enough into the Sahara to reach high dunes. All in all, it sounds like the Erg Chegaga is a lot less interesting, but that is certainly not the case. Precisely because it is more difficult to reach, there are far fewer tourists here. So if you are looking for an experience where you feel completely alone, we recommend the Erg Chegaga desert!

Erg Chebbi desert

The Erg Chebbi desert is a popular area of the Sahara, bordering the city of Merzouga. Erg Chebbi is easy to reach, after a 10-minute camel ride, or 5 minutes by 4×4, you are surrounded by meter-high sand dunes. The dunes are quite high here, which creates beautiful pictures, and there are many different desert camps. These tent camps are very luxurious, true glamping in the desert! Due to the proximity of the city of Merzouga, the supply of running water and electricity is well arranged in this part of the desert. Keep in mind that you will always see other visitors in the Erg Chebbi desert. It is beautiful so a tourist attraction for a reason.

So which desert do you choose? Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chegaga?

I think when this is your first experience with the desert, it doesn’t matter which of the two you choose. Both will be fun! However, if photography is very important to you, then the Erg Chebbi desert might be a better pick!

A special experience: a desert tour in the Erg Chebbi Sahara

Slightly tense we enter Merzouga. It feels a bit like we’re in the setting of The Walking Dead. The city has been demolished and seems deserted, except for some Moroccans hanging around. Every few meters they call a little to us, or even crazier, one jumps in front of the car and then knocks on the window and shouts something at us in Arabic. We drive on quickly, we don’t get off, the thermometer shows 43 degrees, no cloud in the sky and everything around us is dusty. Welcome to one of the last cities before the desert begins. Or … actually we don’t feel really welcome at all …

The start of our glamping experience in the Merzouga desert

We drive to the post office, where we agreed with Omar at 5 p.m. Omar is our contact person with whom we have booked a camel tour & overnight stay in the desert. He has already warned us, only when we are approached by someone who knows that my name is Charlotte, then it is Omar. And indeed, right at 5 p.m., an astonishingly clean wave is coming (our car is unrecognizable because of all the sand from the last 5 hours of driving), the window goes down, and we hear “Charlotte?” Great, we are in good hands! We both leave a sigh of abandonment.

Waiting at the pool before the camel ride through the desert starts

Omar takes us to hotel Nomad Palace , ten minutes’ drive from the paved road. Here we park our car and have plenty of time to change clothes, go on wifi (we have not had internet for 3 days) or cool off in the swimming pool. From the swimming pool, we have a great view: about ten camels that are grazing peacefully and behind them large red mountains of sand: the Sahara. While we relax for a while we start talking to a couple from Brisbane. Together with their daughter, who has just studied at Oxford for half a year, they are also taking a road trip through Morocco. Later it appears that we are in the same group, nice!

Are you also planning to go to Marrakech ? Make sure to check out our free city guide about this magical place!

How to get on top of a camel?

When it is almost time to go, we change quickly our clothes. Despite the heat, we wear long, thin trousers (Ries has quickly bought white cotton trousers somewhere on the street), closed shoes and a scarf. Thick layers of sunscreen on my face and arms, because I don’t have a long-sleeved t-shirt with me (that doesn’t seem to be necessary later on either). To protect against the sun, Omar knots a Berber cloth on our head using the traditional method of wearing. When we walk towards the camels, the animals look at us from behind their long lashes.

Driving a camel through the Moroccan desert!

We are helped by one of the Berber guides to sit down around a bump construction around their bump. A soft pat on the knee of the camel and WOOWHOOOH, in three steps the beast gets up and I suddenly sit two meters above the ground. The first meters feel a bit awkward and wobbly, but it is soon enough to enjoy ourselves when our procession of camels slowly walks into the desert. Around us, there are only high mountains of sand, and the long shadows because the sun gets lower and lower. Fortunately, the heat is not that bad, there is a nice breeze and the frozen bottles of water that we have received also offer a lot of cooling.

Would you like to combine the desert with the beach? Make sure to check our Morocco itinerary !

The beautiful camel ride through the Moroccan desert!

We drive through the desert for an hour and a half. Sometimes we come across other camel stands, or we see a tent camp somewhere in a sandy valley. We see the sun go down and stop to take pictures. It is dusk when we arrive at our white tent camp. Nevertheless, it is easy to see how beautiful it is. There are pouffes around a campfire and a path of carpets has been laid that goes to every tent. When I enter our tent, my mouth falls open in surprise. It is so luxurious! There is a huge four-poster bed, with a sitting area and a sink. Behind two awnings are our own shower (with hot water) and toilet. There is even electricity available, unbelievable, in the middle of the desert! The ultimate Glamping this! So delicious!

Together with the family from Australia, and a group of jolly Spaniards, we have dinner in the main tent. Then the campfire starts and the Berbers start to play drums and make music. And that’s how we end this great evening.

Admire sunrise in the desert!

At six o’clock the alarm goes off, time to watch the sunrise. We get dressed quickly and walk outside. The soft sand is cool on our feet. We walk drowsily into the dunes, going up requires a lot of effort, not going down, that is a matter of sliding. You sometimes sink into the sand up to your knee. It is starting to get a bit light, and Ries is running ahead to take some pictures of a higher dune. Suddenly he starts gesturing wildly and yelling that I must come. I do a sprint, to the extent that it is possible in loose sand, and come out of breath.

And then I see it … a bright red sphere that rises above the dark sand dunes. The sun has never been so big and it’s great to see! There is nobody around us, and we enjoy in silence. Slowly the sun rises further and it gets warmer quickly.

Back in the tented camp, we have breakfast with the group and then climb on the camel again. It’s time to go back. We are back at the hotel punctually at 09.00. We get into the car, both with a big smile on our lips. Wow-what a beautiful experience this was! We will do this more often anyway!

Night photography in the desert of Morocco!

The alarm clock rings the first time at 5 a.m. I will stay for a while, but Ries gets up to take pictures of the stars. There is hardly any light pollution here. The result is beautiful photos of the galaxy. It is a little early to get up but you get so much in return!

Tip: make sure you bring a tripod for star photography and take the position of the moon into account. You want the moon to be “gone.” For this Ries uses the free app “ Star Walk 2 “

Transport: how do you get to the Erg Chebbi desert in Morocco?

The Erg Chebbi desert is close to Merzouga. You only have two options to get here.

  • Self-drive . Drive here by car yourself. You can rent a car in any city. To give you an idea of the distance: from Marrakech to Merzouga it is approximately a 9-hour drive and from Ouarzazate, it is a 5-hour drive. We chose this option because the Merzouga, Erg Chebbi desert, was part of our road trip through Morocco.
  • Via an organized tour. The tour company then arranges all the transportation. Please note, if you arrange this tour from Marrakech then you will take longer than the 9 hours we took it by car. The outward journey will then easily take 11 to 12 hours if the traffic is good.

What do you pack for an overnight stay in the desert?

It is handy to wear long light pants , closed shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a scarf or a cap during the camel ride. Afraid of muscle pain? Then book a camel ride that doesn’t take too long. We went for the one and a half-hour camel safari and went back for a while. You will feel it in your legs, but we did not have muscle pain. Of course, don’t forget to take your toilet bag and your camera. A small bag must be more than enough to put all the stuff in.

What we also recommend is a warm sweater and jeans . If you travel in the winter, even consider taking a jacket and gloves with you. The temperature can drop quickly in the desert, as soon as the sun is down, it gets ice cold.

You don’t need to bring food. The food that you get during the desert trip is delicious! If you have dietary requirements, please let them know in time.

The best hotels near Merzouga and in Erg Chebbi desert.

Sleeping in the desert is a special experience. During the day it is horribly hot and in the evening it cools down nicely. You can’t talk about real camping in the Erg Chebbi desert. It is more glamorous camping, hence the name glamping. You can expect a wonderful bed with glamping. And a private bathroom and toilet. Don’t forget to set the alarm clock in the night when the moon is down. At night you have a fantastic view of the stars and the galaxy here!

Morocco Desert Camel Rides

In Morocco, camel rides have become one of the main tourist attractions as desert tour . Many tourists have their sights set on traversing the golden dunes of the Sahara at sunset on the back of the exotic animal.

The spectacular vision of the desert camel caravan , leading a trail thought the burning Sahara Desert sun, is one which has captured the imaginations of many through films and literature. However, the reality is a little less romantic. These majestic animals can be over worked and poorly treated, therefore it is important as a traveller to be conscious of the choices you make and support the positive welfare of these animals when choosing to book a camel tour.

Tourism supports to the local communities

As tourists you are welcomed to the region by the local people. The trade through tourism supports to the local communities and is helping the nomadic lifestyle to continue. With more people giving up traditional life for the modern town and city-based living, herds of camel can become redundant and left with no purpose. The locals can earn a living offering camel rides to visitor and this has now become a growing market. There are plenty of choices, if you want to experience a Morocco camel trek. From a short ride to an adventure lasting several days. Immersing your self in the lifestyle of the Berber camel herders will be a memorable story into another world.

Morocco-Desert-Camel-Rides Morocco Desert Camel Rides

Good to know as a conscious traveller

It is important as a conscious traveller, that you book you tour with respectable camel tour operators who are looking after their animals. If possible. look for evidence of the camels that they keep and look for those animals that seem strong and healthy. It’s a good thing to express concern for the animals’ welfare. Look to support individuals and small local companies that respect their animals and treat them with kindness and compassion.

Be aware of the camels

Taking a moment before riding the camel to check how the animals are being kept and don’t be shy to make your own judgment of the animal. If the camel is looking sick, unhealthy or injured, then it is within your right to decided no to ride that animal.

It’s advisable not to ride animals that look undernourished or have protruding bones that are visible across the back or around the hips. Avoid animals with open wounds, its good to check around the harness and saddle, also see if the tethers and nosebands seems too tight and causing the animal discomfort; in all of these incidents, it’s worth mentioning something the person looking after the animals. Observe how the handlers are treating the animals and be vigilant to those people who show cruel behaviour towards the animals.

Camels can usually carry around 150lbs of weight so be mindful to not overload the animal, you may be given permission to ride two people on the same animal but consider if the animal is strong enough to carry this weight. Avoid operators who are overloading their camels with people and supplies. You may be tempted to try to save money, but it is kinder for the animals if you can ride separately.

Where can you find camel tours?

You can enjoy camel rides in through many areas of Morocco. It’s the sort of activity that completes the quintessential Moroccan adventure. For camel treks in Marrakesh, you can book a sunset camel ride, or you may want to visit the Moroccan countryside, where you can explore traditional villages, tour through the green palm groves and discover the local culture. Other options for a camel tour Morocco, there are the beaches of Essaouira from where you will watch the sunset beyond the horizon of the Atlantic, and of course you have the dunes of the Sahara. If you have limited time, then you can choose a shorter trip to Menara and for those people wanting to escape for longer, an adventure in the Agafay Desert could be the better option. Camel riding is also popular in Merzouga, a town in the south-eastern part of Morocco. This is a town close to the Algerian border and in Erg Chebbi, you can plan an overnight stay and travel into the desert with the nomadic tribes’ people.

What to wear on a camel ?

When heading off for your camel ride, it can make all the difference if you are wearing the right style of clothing. Sitting on the back of a camel, your legs can be irritated by the coarse hair of the camels’ back, so it would be the best option to wear long pants. Make sure they are loose and stretchy and comfortable. If you are headed to the desert, then layers are good, so you can strip down during the day when the sun is high and layer up when the sun goes down and keep yourself snug. Be sure to keep protected from the direct sunlight, wearing a hat or scarf, to keep your face protected. A long scarf or bandanna can protect your face in case of a dust storm and if you’re expecting to be caught in some more extreme weather conditions then dust goggles are the best option.

Ride camel in safety

In terms of safety, camels usually have a pretty settled nature. The are stable and reliable so they prove to be very safe to ride. Make sure you receive some clear instruction from the tour guide as to how you should be sat and holding on. Like all animals, they can on occasion be unpredictable, understand any safety instructions that you are given and follow the rules of the ride. Mounting the camel requires you to straddle you legs and you will be in this position for a while.

If you are not used to using the muscles in your legs, then it would be a good idea to limber-up before the ride. Some stretching and maybe a few squats as the most challenging part of the ride is maintaining a good posture and stabilising yourself through the pressure you can apply with your legs. If your planning a long excursion, then prepare yourself for some discomfort.

Spending a long time in the saddle will begin to have an impact on the body, so if would be a good idea to take some pain relief, for any back issues. The best approach is to find a rhythm that sways with the movement of the camel. Allow your body to relax and the movement will happen naturally. Keep your awareness at your core and this will improve your stability and balance. A strong core will help to redirect the pressure of the impact being sent into your back.

The cost of riding a camel

If your looking at a 2-day camel tour, the you should expect to be paying around $200. This should include all meals and transportation. The are many combinations of tours available and you can decide on the length of time you would like your adventure to last. The longer tours will venture deeper into the Sahara Desert. Aim to pay a fair price for the tour and not to haggle for the lowest price as this will ultimately affect the care of the animals. Aim for sustainable tourism, the flow of income which comes back into the dessert and camel herding communities, enables them to continue, so that others may visit these amazing places and see the continuation of the traditional ways of living in these regions.
