'EA Sports PGA Tour' 2023 release date, price, courses, consoles and more on newest golf video game

Those who indulge will be able to play at major championship venues such as augusta national.

EA Sports is officially back in the golf video game space with its impending release of "EA Sports PGA TOUR". Marking its first venture back to the golf scene since "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" in 2015, the return to consoles will feature stark contrasts compared to those that came before. Having previously featured cover athletes such as McIlroy and primarily Tiger Woods from 1999-2014, this year's edition of the game will not include a big-name superstar on the cover. EA Sports will instead lean on new gameplay options, advanced technology and the inclusion of some of the most storied golf courses around the world.

Below is everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming release of "EA Sports PGA Tour".

Release date

The official release date for "EA Sports PGA TOUR" is Friday, March 24, just two weeks before the 2023 Masters. This makes some sense as the game will feature a Road to the Masters gameplay option. 

Price and consoles

The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Featuring three different editions, each will come at a different price point. The "Deluxe Edition" is available for pre-order at $84.99 while the "Standard Edition" comes in at $69.99. Lastly, the "EA Play Pro Edition" is listed at $99.99/yr.

The game will include 30 courses in total, and boasts some of the world's most prominent venues such as Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club, Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, East Lake Golf Club, TPC Southwind, The Los Angeles Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and more. It will also feature the major host courses from 2021 and 2022 as well as the new 2023 majors courses releasing post-launch. 

You can play the game as Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ, Xander Schauffele, Sungjae Im, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

My Career mode

The game will include a role playing game mode-type progression in the Road to the Masters. As one's golf game improves, the likelihood of donning the green jacket or raising a major championship trophy increases. Users will be able to create and customize a golfer and develop their skills through the 20 different shot types available. From there, players will compete in major championships, participate in some of the PGA Tour's best events -- such as The Players Championship -- and ultimately the FedEx Cup. In addition to this, players can take on top amateur championships including the Augusta National Women's Amateur, the U.S. Amateur and other elite international amateur events.

LPGA and the Amundi Evian Championship

In partnership with the LPGA, fans can compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. They will also have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer in the Create-A-Player feature and be able to participate in a series of LPGA-themed challenges and other events.

New technology

• True-to-Life course visuals:  EA's Frostbite engine uses state-of-the-art equipment such as drone technology, custom LiDAR flight helicopters and more to develop terrain maps allowing to game to depict courses exactly as they appear in real life
• ShotLink:  Golfers will authentically be replicated with accurate player ratings, skills and magnified true-to-life in-game events by utilizing the PGA Tour's proprietary real-time scoring system since 2001.
• Trackman data:  Insights from TrackMan will allow for authentic gameplay utilizing a myriad of stats including club tuning, flight trajectory, landing position and much more.

What about Tiger Woods?

Woods is no longer with the EA Sports family after their partnership from 1999-2014. The 15-time major champion is now with the 2K franchise , and made it known to his followers where they can play as him.

The first glimpse of EA Sports PGA Tour — and yes, that’s the final title — is here at last, and it’s a brief but impressive look at EA Sports’ next simulation golf game.

A teaser trailer released Tuesday — which happens to be the same day that 2K Sports’ competing game, PGA Tour 2K23 , debuted in early release — offers clips of what EA refers to as “actual gameplay footage” from Augusta National Golf Club. That’s the home of the Masters Tournament, which will be featured exclusively in EA Sports PGA Tour , returning to the world of video games for the first time in a decade. It will be accompanied in the game by the three other major championships in men’s professional golf, as well as the Amundi Evian Championship , one of five majors on the women’s pro tour.

It’s perhaps premature to compare the two games; after all, this is a teaser with less than 30 seconds of footage from a work in progress. As for a release date, EA did not provide an updated launch window on Tuesday beyond the previously announced yearlong delay to “ spring 2023 .” However, the publisher did finally confirm the platforms on which EA Sports PGA Tour will be available: PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. PC is a surprise; EA hasn’t released a golf title on PC since 2011. The publisher may be returning to the platform to compete directly with PGA Tour 2K23 , which has been available on PC since that franchise debuted as The Golf Club in 2014.

EA might also be inviting a comparison to PGA Tour 2K23 because the publisher believes it’s a favorable one. I’ve spent the past few days playing a review copy of the latter game, and while it’s no slouch in the graphics department, this peek at EA’s upcoming effort appears to be a cut above 2K Sports’ latest — there’s a level of richness and polish here that immediately caught my eye. For instance, the clubhouse at Augusta National has a heft that makes it look like a proper building; the structures on many of the courses in PGA Tour 2K23 look like cardboard cutouts by comparison.

Having said that, buildings on golf courses are ultimately just window dressing. In the end, EA Sports PGA Tour will be judged on how it feels to line up shots and swing a club; how many modes of play and courses it offers; and the degree to which players can customize their created golfer. Its predecessor, 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour , came up far short in pretty much every one of those areas except gameplay — at least at launch . As of now, EA has announced 11 courses for EA Sports PGA Tour , and said Tuesday that its roster of playable golfers will include Jordan Spieth, winner of the 2015 Masters Tournament, who appears in the teaser trailer.

EA Sports PGA Tour gets a release date, new details shared

Electronic Arts announced a release date for EA Sports PGA Tour today, so mark your calendars for March 24.

The game will be the exclusive home to all four majors in men’s golf. These are the US Open Championship, Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, and The Open.

In addition, the game releases with Road to the Masters featuring Augusta National, challenges, tournaments, and gear tied to the Masters. Additional details on live service content throughout the 2023 PGA Tour and LPGA Tour seasons will be announced.

The video released today alongside the announcement shows off the Pure Strike shot system. It provides you with all the tools needed to tackle courses as the pros do. It also ensures professional golfer’s unique swing and attributes are reflected accurately in the game. Expect fluid swing mechanics accurate to backswing length, speed of followthrough, ball behavior, and lifelike course dynamics.

PGA Tour features 30 courses, such as the Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, Torrey Pines, Evian-les-Bains, and more. It will also feature past major host courses in 2021 and 2022 and the new 2023 majors courses post-launch.

It also features an RPG-like progression system dubbed the Road to the Masters. As your golf game improves, the closer you will get to become a major champion. You can create and customize your golfer, develop skills and master each course with 20 shot types available as you progress in the game. You will be able to compete to become a major champion and take on events like the FedExCup, and top amateur events.

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) will allow you to play in the Amundi Evian Championship and have the opportunity to play as several female athletes or to create your own female golfer using the overhauled Create-A-Player system. Iona Stephen will join the commentary team as the first female on-course commentator in-game.

To make the courses come to life, the developers built the game using EA’s Frostbite engine and used drone technology, helicopters, and airplanes equipped with LiDAR scanners to develop terrain maps. Because of this, you can expect courses to appear as they do in real life. The photogrammetry and scanners were also applied to create renderings of clubhouses, vegetation, bridges, tee markers, rock formations, and other on-course elements.

PGA Tour also features ShotLink, the game’s proprietary real-time scoring system, and insights from TrackMan, a world leader in 3D ball flight measurement and swing analysis,

The game will be made available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the EA App, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.

Pre-orders for PGA Tour are live alongside the Deluxe Edition which includes three-day early access, and the Augusta National. This edition also includes the Players Championship Gear, The Grand Slam Gear Bundle, Scotty Cameron Putter in-game, 1,500 Premium PGA Tour points, a PGA Tour XP Bundle, and The Masters gear.

EA Play members will also receive early access to the game, starting with a 10-hour early access trial on March 21. EA Play Pro members will enjoy unlimited access to the Deluxe Edition of the game and the exclusive EA Play Staff Bag starting March 21. EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 review – serious players have much to master in EA’s return to the virtual fairway

Electronic Arts; PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S The controls can be tough to get the hang of, but the visuals are stunning, the commentary impressive and the play itself gives you all the challenge and realism you could want

A fter an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, Electronic Arts is back on the fairway, bringing its considerable licensing power and slick sports TV presentation skills with it. Featuring 30 courses, a large roster of current professionals, and a physics model built around the official TrackMan data for authentic ball flight measurement and swing analysis, this game is exactly what you’d expect from EA Sports – comprehensive, packed with options and deadly serious about the sport.

Those hoping for an accessible knockabout are going to be quickly disappointed. The new swing mechanic, which requires you to pull down on the analogue stick to bring the club back, then forward again to unleash your shot, takes considerable time and effort to master. There’s a slight lag between your input and the onscreen swing visual, which makes timing tricky, especially when you’re not going for a full-power shot. Consequently, you spend a lot of matches over-hitting wildly, and this isn’t helped by the fact that the transition on the stick from pull-back to forward has to be precise or your golfer just pulls a practice swing. The difficulty is compounded by the fact that there’s no real tutorial mode. Instead you get a Coaching Academy section in the Challenge mode, which has lots of little mini-games based around various elements of the sport – but these don’t provide tips or feedback, so it’s all trial and a lot of error.

In the main Career mode, which lets you create a player then guide them through a competitive year (hopefully ending with a shot at the Masters), you start with hopeless stats and need to earn XP points to build your skills in driving, approach play, short game and putting before you have any chance of winning cups. It’s an RPG element that feels kind of weird within this very serious simulation, and it forces you to spend hours entering lesser tournaments and trying the hundreds of skill challenges to build up your XP and raise your stats. There’s a quick game mode that lets you jump into a round on any course with any player, so you do get to experience high level play from the outset – but if you want to beat Career get ready for a real golfing grind.

When you do start to get the hang of the controls, PGA Tour 2023 becomes an enjoyable and engrossing sim. The visuals are beautiful, with lusciously detailed courses, from Liberty National with its view of the Manhattan skyline to Pebble Beach where the holes edge along rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. These courses don’t simply provide aesthetic contrast – they play very differently and require planning. Each hole demands that you tweak your swing, club and shot shaping depending on the shape of the fairway, the lie of the bunkers and myriad other factors. The commentary is also extremely good, with genuinely interesting and helpful observations, and excellent reactions to your play – I managed to land an incredible shot from a bunker 30ft from the flag and there was notable surprise in Rich Lerner’s voice. Together with the slick UI and swooping overhead cameras, EA has done a superb job of simulating modern sports broadcasting.

Alongside the Career, Challenge and Quick Play modes there are also various tournament options, including online matches against friends or the wider community. A range of daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments also allow you to earn XP and items for a limited period before they’re refreshed, so you’ve got lots of reasons to keep coming back. Unfortunately, the game features a loot box mechanic, rewarding in-game achievement with random packages of cosmetic goods and XP boosts. You can also earn in-game money to spend in the game’s outfit store, but those who can’t wait can buy the currency with real cash. Considering the money the Fifa series has made from micro transactions this is hardly surprising, but it sits uneasily in the more austere atmosphere of a golf sim.

This is a promising return to golf for EA Sports. It’s slow of pace, it’s tough to get into, and it’s a little staid and fuddy-duddy at times (most of the background music makes you feel like you’re on hold to a financial service call centre), but the accuracy of the ball physics, the huge range of shots and the highly tactical nature of the play gives serious players the challenge and realism they want. I wish there was a smoother on-ramp for beginners, or a much more basic arcade mode for those who want to thrash through a few holes with pals, but this is a sim after all and when it comes to sport, EA does not mess around.

The Masters made its first-ever virtual appearance with EA SPORTS in 2011, and its return to video games has been highly requested by golf fans. EA SPORTS will also provide more details on additional live service content throughout the 2023 PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour seasons.

EA Sports' PGA Tour Video Game Release Pushed Back to Spring 2023

Golf fans will have to wait an additional year for the relaunch of EA Sports' "PGA Tour" series.

EA announced on Tuesday that the game — originally slated for Spring 2022 — has now been delayed to Spring 2023.

"EA Sports PGA Tour is our first HD golf game in seven years and we wanted to give it the time to make the best game possible. We’re excited to bring all four majors, the Players Championship, FedEx Cup Playoffs and more to golf fans on next-gen platforms," said EA Sports in a statement to Morning Read/SI.com.

EA announced the return of PGA Tour nearly a year ago, on March 29, 2021. A series of promising updates over the ensuing months was followed by a tweet in November that EA was "shifting the launch date."

The game's marketing has thus far focused on the inclusion of all four 2022 men's major championships, including the Masters at Augusta National, the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, and the British Open at St. Andrews.

An FAQ page on the game's official website also lists the inclusion of Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, Kiawah Island's Ocean Course and the Players Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass; the FedEx Cup playoff courses at TPC Southwind, Wilmington Country Club, and East Lake; LPGA events including the Amundi Evian Championship at Evian Resort Golf Club; multiple amateur events including the U.S. Amateur; "Road to the Masters" content; a career mode; PGA Tour and LPGA pros; and ShotLink and TrackMan data.

A Spring 2022 release would have coincided with the beginning of golf's major championship season, and the game's development team will now work to meet that same deadline next year.

Of potential note, given the delay, the 2023 PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship will be played at Oak Hill, Los Angeles Country Club (North) and Royal Liverpool (Hoylake).
