Ed Sheeran makes Australasian touring history

Ed Sheeran makes Australasian touring history

Ed Sheeran has officially made touring history with a new record number of stadium shows throughout New Zealand and Australia on one single tour.

The British star originally announced seven stadium dates, which quickly increased to fourteen last week; equalling AC/DC’s 2010 record.

Now, due to phenomenal demand, four additional shows (Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Dunedin) result in a massive eighteen-date stadium run across Australasia in March 2018.

Fans are thrilled at news of extra shows, after the additional dates sold out on the first day of general public sale.

More than 710,000 tickets were sold by the end of the general public on sale day, with the new shows set to see Ed Sheeran surpass 900,000 ticket sales across all 18 dates.

Not stopping his record-breaking antics there, Ed has also set new records for the most stadium shows on one tour at Forsyth Barr in Dunedin, with three shows and also at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, where he’ll headline four nights.

Ed Sheeran said, “I’ve always loved coming to Australia and New Zealand. So many amazing musicians have toured there and I am humbled to have broken these records.”

Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring, said “This is now not only the biggest tour Frontier has promoted, but it’s the biggest tour in Australian and New Zealand touring history!”

Ed Sheeran will tour Australia in support of his chart-topping third studio album, ÷ (pronounced Divide).

The album   and its singles have already broken global streaming records and chart records in Australia: all sixteen tracks from the deluxe version of ÷ have charted in the ARIA Top 40, ÷ sits atop the ARIA Albums Chart for its seventh week while  Shape Of You  recently notched up a record-breaking fourteenth week at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

In keeping with his legendary status, Sheeran will perform completely unaccompanied, joined on stage by just a guitar and effect pedals. The pull of this one-man band is an incredible experience to witness; layers of harmonies, rhythms and guitar parts cast out to a crowd of thousands who sing every lyric straight back to him.

Ticketmaster is thrilled to help welcome Ed Sheeran to Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium and the all-new Perth Stadium during his ÷ tour.

Ed Sheeran Breaks Record for the Most Tickets Sold to a Single Concert in Australia

By Jules LeFevre

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has broken the Australian record for most tickets sold for a single gig, with 107,000 people slated to attend his Friday, 3rd March show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Sheeran’s Thursday night show has also sold over 100,000 tickets, with final release still on sale. It means that well over 200,000 tickets have been sold for Sheeran’s first shows in Melbourne since March 2018.

Ed Sheeran: ‘Bad Habits’

“Ed loves to break a record and he’s smashed this one,” Mushroom CEO Matt Gudinski said in a statement. “Melbourne is set for two incredibly special nights with one of the greatest performers ever.”

The shows are a part of Sheeran’s extensive + – = ÷ x Tour – known more generally as the Mathematics tour – the Australian leg of which began in Brisbane in mid-February. Young Coodjinburra soul singer Budjerah was selected to support Sheeran on the tour, along with British singer Maisie Peters , who is signed to Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records.

The Melbourne milestone isn’t the first record Sheeran has broken on the current tour: he drew the biggest audience ever in the Welsh city of Cardiff, with 75,000 attending his 2022 show . Sheeran’s 2018 tour of Australia and New Zealand broke the record for total ticket sales , with the tour aggregate eclipsing one million.

After landing in Melbourne on Monday, Sheeran paid tribute to his late friend and mentor Michael Gudinski – founder of Mushroom Group – by clinking a glass of Penfolds 707 on Gudinski’s statue at Rod Laver Arena.

Get to know Ticketmaster’s Smart Queue

If you aren’t familiar with  Smart Queue , it is Ticketmaster’s way of creating a clear and fair process for thousands of fans to buy tickets in a short space of time. Fans enter the virtual  Waiting Room  prior to onsale time before joining the  Smart Queue  – which acts as a ‘virtual line’, helping us protect you and your tickets in a more effective way.

The time you join the Waiting Room does not determine your place in the Smart Queue, so we recommend joining at least 10 minutes prior to the event going on sale.

When the sale begins, the Smart Queue will open and everyone in the Waiting Room is given a place in line. Those who did not join the Waiting Room will be placed at the end of the line.

  • Sign in to your Ticketmaster account at least 10 minutes before joining the Waiting Room. This will speed up your purchase later.
  • Confirm you have a valid form of payment in your account with current email and billing information. This will make checkout a breeze.
  • Resist the urge to refresh. Your page will automatically refresh when you enter the Smart Queue.
  • Keep an eye on the time! When it’s your turn, your spot will be held for 10 minutes to begin shopping.
  • Just like before, tickets are always based on availability, demand, and are not guaranteed.

I can’t go any more and need to sell on my ticket. What do I do?

For Ed Sheeran’s 2023 +- =÷ x Tour, Ticketmaster will be offering a dedicated resale marketplace for fans in line with Ed Sheeran’s ethical resale principles.

To help combat unethical secondary ticketing, the ticket resale marketplace will provide a safe and secure place for you to sell your ticket/s via Ticketmaster if you can’t use them anymore.

Fans will be able to list and buy tickets to Ed Sheeran’s tour via Ticketmaster’s Resale marketplace, which is currently in the final stages of development for this tour.

More information on Ticketmaster’s Resale marketplace for Ed Sheeran’s 2023 +- =÷ x Tour will be available soon –> https://shops.ticketmasterpartners.com/resale

What is unethical secondary tickets and ticket resale?

Unethical secondary ticketing is when people buy tickets at face value and then resell them at inflated prices via non-artist approved methods and websites, thus denying real fans the chance to buy at face value.

Ticket touts and unauthorised resellers use multiple payment cards, false identities and sophisticated computer programmes (“bots”) to buy up large amounts of tickets which they then offer for resale at highly inflated prices.

For information on how to sell your tickets through Ticketmaster’s Resale marketplace for Ed Sheeran’s 2023 +- =÷ x Tour click here: https://shops.ticketmasterpartners.com/resale

What else are you doing to combat the secondary market?

Your mobile phone number is linked to your ticket order. Your tickets are linked to both your account with your chosen ticket agent AND you mobile phone number. This means your ticket and the individual information you gave when you purchased are linked.

If a ticket is resold in any method other than via official face-value resale channels then the mobile phone number will not be linked to the ticket(s) and you will be refused entry to the venue.

How do I purchase Accessible Seating tickets?

Accessible Seating tickets for wheelchair and companion card holders (where applicable) will be available to purchase online if you have a smart phone for ticket delivery.

Alternatively, all Accessible Seating bookings can be requested by contacting:

Optus Stadium, Perth

Eden Park, Auckland

Please ensure you include the Event Name, Venue, Date and Time along with your contact details in all booking requests.

How many Ed Sheeran tickets can I buy?

There will be a strict limit of six (6) tickets per show. This restriction is in place in order to give as many people as possible a fair chance to buy tickets.

The whole party must arrive at the same time as the person with the mobile/smartphone device containing all the tickets.

Please note:  Any and all transactions that are detected as bot purchases, patrons creating duplicate accounts in order to purchase more than the ticket limit or any action that indicates a suspicious purchase in excess of the ticket limit will be cancelled.

What if we want to go as a bigger group/family?

You will have to try to complete another order with another mobile device.

Why can’t I access my Ed Sheeran tickets right away?

All tickets purchased for Ed Sheeran’s + – = ÷ x (The Mathematics) 2023 Tour are digital and will only be accessible on a digital mobile/smartphone via Ticketmaster’s mobile app. Therefore, no physical tickets will be posted or emailed in advance.

Once the tickets have been purchased, you will receive a confirmation email as proof of purchase. This is NOT your ticket or ticket(s).

The lead booker will receive instructions on how to access their ticket(s) much nearer to the shows.

Can I buy Ed Sheeran tickets as a gift?

The matching ID of the surname of the lead booker will be an entry requirement. The other tickets bought by that person can be used for other people as long as they ALL arrive with the lead booker. If you want to buy tickets as gifts then you’ll also have to attend to get your recipients into the show.

What are the age restrictions?

All venue age restrictions are clearly displayed on the sales pages on the website.

This is a licensed, loud music event, staged over a long time and we do not recommend attendance by children aged 5 years and under. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times and have purchased a valid ticket.  No concession tickets will be available for children, they must have a ticket.

In the unlikely event, you are looking to purchase tickets on behalf of 15-18 year olds who do not have access to a smartphone we recommend that you attend the show with the group.

What are the entry requirements?

To gain access to the concert you are required to bring your fully charged mobile phone or smartphone. You may be required to produce your email booking confirmation and a valid form of photo ID that matches the name on the confirmation.

Accepted forms of Photo ID are

  • Driver Licence or Learner Permit (from any country) including Digital Driver Licences
  • Passport (from any country)
  • KEYPASS Photo ID Card or Keypass in Digital iD
  • KIWI Access Card (New Zealand only)
  • Any other recognised Proof/Evidence of Age/Identity or Photo Card.

All Acceptable ID must be written in English or if not written in English, then accompanied by an official English translation.

For a foreign Driver Licence not written in English, an International Driver Permit issued in the foreign country of origin (and including a photo of the licence holder and translation) should be presented with the Foreign Driver Licence.

What if my phone is out of battery so I can’t access my ticket(s)?

Please make sure your phone is fully charged before you leave the house to avoid this situation. Of course if you run out of battery go to the box office where someone will be able to assist you to find your order.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Ed Sheeran tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is as popular as Ed Sheeran, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

UPDATE (22/3): Ed Sheeran has expanded his upcoming Australian following overwhelming demand.

Announcing his first tour of Australia since 2018 just last week, pre-sale tickets to Sheeran’s 2023 tour went on sale yesterday, with immense demand soon necessitating the addition of three extra shows in major cities.

Sheeran’s upcoming tour will now see him performing additional shows at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, Sydney’s Accor Stadium, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in February and March of next year. Tickets to these upcoming shows are on sale from Wednesday, March 22nd, with full details available below.

Almost four years to the day since he wrapped up his last tour of the country, pop icon Ed Sheeran has announced his return to Australia, plotting a stadium tour for early 2023.

Announced this morning, the forthcoming tour will see Sheeran kick off his time down under with a pair of shows in New Zealand, before heading across the Tasman for headline dates in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.

Releasing his last album back in October, Sheeran’s  = (pronounced ‘Equals’), gave him his fifth-straight chart-topping album in the country. Fittingly, the record also featured the track “Visiting Hours” , which Sheeran had written for, and first premiered at the memorial service of, late Australian music icon Michael Gudinski .

However, despite a brief one-off trip to Australia early last year to play the heartfelt track, Sheeran has been eagerly awaiting to head out on the road for his new global tour. Now, the + – = x Tour (pronounced ‘The Mathematics Tour’) is set to kick off next month in Ireland, before it goes around the world, currently culminating with the aforementioned run of Aussie dates.

Tickets to Ed Sheeran’s upcoming Australian tour go on sale from Wednesday, March 23rd, with specific times detailed below. Likewise, a Frontier Members pre-sale runs for 24 hours from Monday, March 21st, with specific times available via Frontier Touring .

'A dream come true': Ed Sheeran breaks Aussie record for a second time as thousands pack the MCG to watch his show

Global popstar Ed Sheeran made a heartfelt statement after he broke the record for largest concert attendance in Australia - a day after he set it.

Yashee Sharma

Ed Sheeran has again broken the record for highest ticketed attendance at an Australian concert after he set it the night before in Melbourne.

The international artist had two shows in Melbourne and broke the attendance record when he played to 108,000 people on Thursday night.

He smashed that record again with 110,000 crowding the Melbourne Cricket Ground at his second show on Friday.

“This really is a dream come true, what an incredible venue,” he wrote in a social media post.

Live music in Melbourne is something special❤️ Record-breaking crowds lighting up the glorious @MCG for the @edsheeran 2023 Tour #MelbourneMoments #VisitMelboune #EdSheeran 🎥 @MushroomGroup I @frontiertouring pic.twitter.com/EkwDEm5PIz — Melbourne, Australia (@Melbourne) March 3, 2023

The 32-year-old was cheered on by the thousands in attendance as he performed at the centre of the arena on a rotating 360-degree stage.

Sheeran was in Melbourne for the Australian leg of his international + - = ÷ x tour and made headlines during his time in the country.

The singer-songwriter warmed hearts when he surprised patients and staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital, and then again at Melbourne Royal Children's Hospital.

At his concert on Thursday, the British popstar made a tribute to his friend and cricket legend Shane Warne.

“Being in the MCG tonight and not having my friend Shane Warne here to watch this … I know this venue was really, really special to him,” Sheeran said to the crowd.

Warne’s children watched on from the arena’s grandstand.

Sheeran will perform in Adelaide on Tuesday and then in Perth on Sunday March 12, where he will wrap up his Down Under circuit.

He last toured the country in 2018, where his performances in Australia helped break the record for the highest ticket-selling tour in history.

Harry Styles fans line up overnight ahead of concert in Sydney

More than one million tickets were sold across Australia and New Zealand, contributing to 8.9 million tickets sold worldwide.

Australians are buzzing as multiple celebrities tour nationwide.

Harry Styles will conclude his time in the country with his last performance in Sydney on Saturday night.

Jay Chou and the Backstreet Boys are also playing on Saturday while Bon Iver and Florence and the Machine are some of the acts making their way around the country.

$82.6m of Ed Sheeran’s record-breaking tour came from Australia [report]

A breakdown of the revenues from Ed Sheeran’s Divide world tour show that US$82.6 million of the record-breaking $776.2 million came from Australia.

The 2.5 year run of 255 shows ended up in his hometown Ipswich, with four shows.

Both Pollstar and Billboard confirmed the tour as the best selling in history with 8,882,182 ticket sales.

Due to a difference in calculations, Pollstar put the total gross at $775.6 million, and Billboard at $776.2 million.

Both agreed Sheeran toppled U2’s 360° Tour (2009-11), which shifted 7.3 million ticket stubs and a total turnover of $736.4 million.

Sheeran did 12 Australian shows between March 2 to March 21 in 2018.

At the time his promoter, Frontier Touring, said he had set a new Australian record with 1,006,387 – the highest for a single concert tour.

But this is the first time the $82.6 million Australian figure has been revealed.

Two shows at Perth’s Optus Stadium played to 114, 031 fans and grossed US$9,146,953.

One show at Adelaide Oval was to 62,915 fans who shelled out $5,103,599.

The four-night run at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium was to a total 256,622 and a $20,838,652 gross.

Three shows at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium grossed $19,948,066 from a draw of 231,185.

Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane hosted 103,744 fans over two nights for a $8,595,585 turnover.

The Divide tour kicked off on March 16, 2017 at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, Italy.

Ed Sheeran breaks Australian concert record

Featured image credit: Rodger Wang on Unsplash

Ed Sheeran has broken an Australian concert record, with more than 107,000 tickets sold for his Friday show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The MCG concert is being produced by Frontier Touring and is part of the English singer’s ‘The Mathematics Tour’. Sheeran is also set to play the MCG on Thursday and has sold more than 100,000 tickets for this performance.

Following Sheeran’s two nights at the MCG, the Australia and New Zealand leg of ‘The Mathematics Tour’ will head to the Adelaide Oval, and finish at Perth’s Optus Stadium on March 12.

When the singer last toured Australia with Frontier Touring in 2018, over one million tickets were sold, beating out the previous record by band Dire Straits. Sheeran’s ‘Divide’ tour that year also set a new record of 18 stadium dates across Australia and New Zealand, beating the previous record of 14 set by rock legends AC/DC.

As reported by The Age , Mushroom Group chief executive Matt Gudinski, whose father founded the Frontier Touring parent company, said: “It’s been a long time in the planning. My dad and I always dreamed of Ed playing at the MCG, and Ed has always wanted to play there.

“Friday night will be the biggest ticketed concert in Australian history with over 107,000 people at the MCG. It’s spectacular, to have that happening at the home of music in Melbourne.

“To have over 100,000 people attending Ed’s concerts, both Thursday and Friday, is just amazing. It’s really special and he [Gudinski’s father] would have had a big smile on his face, knowing we’ve broken the attendance record and what’s been achieved by Ed on this tour.”
