These 6 Travel Hacks Will Help You Save Time and Money on Your Next Flight
As we all witnessed, air travel has been somewhat of a crapshoot for the last few years, with cancellations and delays often becoming the norm . And with airports seeing record passenger numbers as of late, planning a stress-free trip in the immediate future feels unlikely, if not impossible.
But all is not lost. To help you avoid any potential travel pains, Expedia released six travel hacks for anyone traveling by air, including the best time to buy or fly, and how to decrease your odds of a delay. And the best part is, each one is backed by data collected by the online travel company.
At the top of their money-saving tips, Expedia says that travelers should book their flights on a Sunday. Securing a flight on Sundays saves an average of 15 percent, up 5 percent from last year. The report adds that travelers can also save 15 percent, on average, if they choose flights that depart on a Wednesday.
So, how far in advance should you book for the best deal? According to the Expedia report, you can save up to an average of 10 percent if you book your tickets at least one month ahead of domestic flights and at least six months in advance for international flights .
Expedia also advises traveling during off-peak flight times to avoid delays—and while this tip isn’t anything we haven’t heard before, the travel company found that you will decrease your chances of a cancellation by a staggering 50 percent if you book yourself on a flight that departs before 3 p.m.
The study’s main takeaway, though, is to set price alerts for any flights or destinations you’re interested in flying. Seems like an obvious thing to do, but many travelers skip this step.

Expedia’s 2023 Air Travel Hacks Report: Canadian travelers should book on this day to save on airfare and avoid flight delays
As we head into the holidays and a brand-new year, many travelers have already expanded their travel plans and aspirations. But if we’ve learned anything from 2022, traveling isn’t always so simple, as travelers encounter unpredictable flight prices, delays and cancellations. Thankfully, Expedia has released its 2023 Air Travel Hacks Report, providing six proven tips to help save travelers time and money.
The main takeaway? Timing is KEY when it comes to hacking air travel.
Air travel is on the runway to recovery
Average ticket prices began to surpass 2019 levels around May and June this year, driven by the rebound in demand and lowering of travel restrictions. After peaking during the summer months, airfare prices dropped again for fall and are expected to rise again for the busy holiday period. 1 While overall capacity (airplane seats available for a given route) has been increasing over the course of the year, it still sits below 2019 levels as airlines work to fully restore operations to pre-pandemic levels. 2
From when to book, to maximizing loyalty perks, here’s Expedia’s guide to hacking travel in 2023:
When to book
Book on a Sunday to save up to 15% 3 Travelers who book on Sundays instead of Fridays tend to save, on average, around 15% on domestic flights and 10% on international flights.
Book at least two months before domestic flights to save 40% 4 The sweet spot for snagging the best price on domestic flights falls around 71 days before departure (so about 2 months in advance of travel). Travelers who booked during that period saved nearly 40% on average compared to those who waited until a month prior to departure.
For those who prefer to plan further in advance, avoid booking any earlier than 100 days out. Domestic airfares can actually be more expensive in the 4 to 5.5-months prior to departure.
Book 3 months before international flights to save 10% 4 Travelers who booked around 3 months in advance of international travel saved 10% compared to those who waited until 2 months out or less to book.
Last-minute flight deals are increasingly rare, so it’s smart to opt into price alerts on the Expedia app and get notified when fares are expected to be at their lowest. Expedia’s price-tracking and predictions feature uses machine learning to identify patterns in historical data to forecast price changes, factoring in time of year, route details, trip length and more to give travelers the most accurate predictions possible.
How to avoid flight disruptions
Depart before 3pm to reduce chance of cancellations 5 Travelers who want the best chance for smooth travel should aim for early flights. Based on year-to-date flight-status data, flights that depart after 3pm have the highest chance of being cancelled – a 40% higher chance, on average, than those that depart earlier in the day.
Travel off-peak 6 Data shows that avoiding the peak travel periods can have more benefits than just cost-savings. On average, flight delays were shorter during February and May compared to the busy summer months, dropping by about 40 minutes. As summer wound down, delays began to shorten again, making fall an appealing time for air travel.
Overall, airlines have steadily improved their services, with total cancellations dropping from more than 10% early in the year to around 4% in August. This trend is expected to continue in a positive direction for travelers, meaning 2023 should see a significantly reduced risk of flight disruptions.
When to travel
Depart on a Friday to save up to 20% 7 In general, travelers who started a trip on a Friday, versus the beginning of the week (a Sunday or a Monday), saved 20% on domestic flights. For international flights, travelers who departed on a Thursday instead of the beginning of the week (a Sunday or a Monday) saved 5%.
How to save on every trip
When it just isn’t possible to follow every travel hack, there are still a few easy ways to knock hundreds of dollars off your trip.
- Book your airfare, hotel and car hire at the same time on Expedia. Otherwise known as bundling, this can instantly unlock hundreds of dollars in savings.
- Sign up for loyalty and frequent flier programs or risk leaving money on the table. Expedia members earn Rewards points for every booking they make, which can be redeemed as dollars off their next trip.*
- Earn air miles on top of Expedia points by entering mileage plan numbers at checkout. It’s an easy way to double-dip and rack up travel rewards even faster.

Book at least 2 months before domestic flights to save 30% 4 The sweet spot for snagging the best price on domestic flights falls between 70-100 days before departure (so about 14 weeks in advance of travel). Travellers that booked during that period tended to save 30% on average compared to those who waited until the last minute (0 – 3 weeks before travel).
Book almost 4 months before international flights to save 20% 4 Travellers who booked around six months in advance of international travel tended to save 20% compared to those who waited until two months or less to book.
How to avoid flight disruptions
Depart before 11am to reduce the chance of cancellations 5 Travellers who want the best chance for smooth travel should aim for early flights. Based on year-to-date flight-status data, flights that depart before 11am are 11% less likely to be impacted by flight cancellations.
Travel off-peak 6 Data shows that avoiding the peak travel periods can have more benefits than just cost-savings. Historically, March is the most reliable month to travel, with the shortest average length of delays, compared to July with the highest (184 minutes on average).
When to travel
Depart on a Saturday to save up to 20% 7 on domestic flights and on a Friday to save 15% on international flights In general, travellers who started a domestic trip on a Saturday, versus the beginning of the week, saved 20% on flights. For international flights, travellers who departed on a Friday saved 15%, the same as our 2022 findings.

Amazon Prime Day 2024: Here's what to expect, tips, and tricks
When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more
Amazon Prime Day has grown into one of the biggest sales events of the year, with discounts rivaling those of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. With so many retailers selling on Amazon, Prime members can save on just about anything, from viral beauty products to new unlocked smartphones.
The best Prime Day deals we saw last year included all-time lows on brands like Apple, Vitamix, iRobot, Dyson, Crocs, and, of course, Amazon-owned products like the Fire TV , Kindle e-reader , and Echo smart speakers . We expect to see more of the same this year as well.
It'll be the first major deal holiday of the year, so it's an awesome chance to score summer discounts on big-ticket items and household staples. The retailer's 10th Prime Day event has officially been announced to arrive in July, but the actual days are still unknown. In the meantime, we're keeping tabs on all of the latest Prime Day news, and we'll keep you updated with our findings here.
- Shop the latest deals at Amazon
When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?
Amazon Prime Day is officially coming this July, though the exact days have not yet been announced. In past years, it kicked off on the second Tuesday of the month. If Amazon follows the same trend, it will take place on July 9 and 10. We'll keep this story updated as more details are announced.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is the retailer's annual mega sale and one of the major benefits of Prime membership. It's a two-day sales event, usually during the summer, that features products from every category, from fashion staples to hot new tech.
Though it used to be a deal holiday of a much smaller scale, Prime Day has grown exponentially since the first one in 2015. Now, you can find almost everything on sale for all-time low prices, matching discounts we see during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
What should I buy during Amazon Prime Day?
Everything is fair game to buy during Amazon Prime Day. Whether you've been holding out on a pricey new TV or just need to stock up on toiletries, Prime Day is a good time to make your move.
Last year, we saw incredible prices on tech, including 4K TVs , Fire TV streaming devices , Apple products, Kindle e-readers , PC gaming accessories, Echo smart speakers , and top headphones picks. Prime Day tech deals featured brands like Logitech, Bose, Jabra, Sony, Roku, Samsung, TCL, and more.
If you're looking for style and beauty deals during Prime Day, last year, brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Tatcha, Laneige, Levi's, Carhartt, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Adidas, and Marc Jacobs all featured products at rare low prices. That means skincare, makeup, shoes, men's clothing, women's fashion, and accessories will all be available for less.
Home and kitchen products saw no shortage of Prime Day deals either, with big names like Dyson, Shark, iRobot, Philips, KitchenAid, Nespresso, Casper, Leesa, and OXO down to all-time lows for the event. So, whether you need an air fryer , robot vacuum , mattress , or just some sturdy mixing bowls, Prime Day is a good time to buy.
You don't need to be focused on fancy new gadgets or treatments to shop smart during Amazon Prime Day either. We also catch tons of affordable household essentials available for even less every year, like toilet paper, dish soap, doggy bags, and makeup wipes. These deals are sweet, since they save you money on stuff you needed to buy anyway.
How long do Prime Day deals last?
How long a Prime Day deal lasts differs between items, but in general, the best discounts will start during the event and end before the 48-hour holiday is over. Some will last the whole two days while others will only last one, so it's always wise to act on a good sale when you see it. Lightning deals especially go fast, the most popular of which dwindle away in less than an hour.
I always recommend buying a product you've had your eye on as soon as it's highlighted as a Prime Day deal. Regardless of how long it's set to last, oftentimes the best sales run out of stock, resulting in shipping dates being pushed out, or the deal no longer being offered at all. We'll be providing all of the deal context you need to shop confidently and quickly, so be sure to check our roundups of the best discounts when the event rolls around.
Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is locked to Prime members only. It's one of the major benefits of subscribing to the service, in addition to other perks like free two-day shipping and Prime Video streaming.
If you have yet to become a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to test it out. Once the official Prime Day dates have been announced, you can even time your free period to overlap with the sale, but it's not a guarantee since sometimes retailers will lock out free members from shopping the best deals.
Do other stores participate in Prime Day?
Although Prime Day is an Amazon-specific event, it's grown so large that other major retailers have started kicking off competing sales to overlap with it. No one has announced a competing Prime Day sale just yet, but if past years are any indication, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will likely be holding their own events.
These are definitely worth checking out; they often match the best deals on popular items you can find from Prime Day. We'll also be rounding these deals up so you can shop from the retailer that best suits you, whether you're a Target Circle cardholder, My Best Buy Plus member, or Walmart Plus subscriber.
Is Prime Day an international event?
Prime Day occurs in several other countries, but not all of them. Here's a list of countries where Prime Day will be available to shop:
- Netherlands
- Saudi Arabia
- The United Arab Emirates
- The United States
- The United Kingdom

Expedia releases 2022 travel hacks including the best time to book airfare and hotels
SEATTLE , Oct. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Expedia® released its seventh annual report in partnership with Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) revealing travel hacks including the best time to book airfare, when to travel and other tips to help travelers navigate booking a vacation in 2022. The insights arrive just in time, as research conducted by the online travel brand found that one in five Americans are seeking savings tips and more than a third (38%) are willing to be flexible with their travel plans in order to save money on their next trip. *
Flight booking tips Based on data from ARC's massive online global airline sales database, average ticket prices for flights (ATPs) hit their lowest levels of the last 12 months during December 2020 and January 2021 . Since then, ATPs have steadily risen and are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels. ATPs specifically for international flights have also grown but remain on average 35 percent lower compared to 2019. 1
With ATPs leveling off, the key to cost savings in 2022 comes down to knowing what day to book, how far in advance and what day to travel.
Optimal Booking Window 2
- Domestic flights prices usually start to increase 21 days before departure, while prices for international flights start to increase 28 days before. The sweet spot to book a domestic flight is between 28 – 35 days in advance, while international flights should be booked three to four months in advance for the lowest prices.
Ideal day of the week to book 3
- The ideal day to book a flight is Sunday, not Friday. For domestic flights this can save travelers around five percent, and for international flights the savings are nearly 10 percent.
Ideal day of the week to travel 4
- The ideal day to start a domestic trip is Friday, not Monday. This will yield savings of more than 15 percent.
- For international flights, the cheapest day to start the trip is on a Thursday, not Tuesday, to save more than five percent.
- In summary, for both domestic and international flights, it is generally cheaper to start the trip during the latter half of the week (Wednesday through Saturday) compared with the first half (Sunday through Tuesday).
Best month to travel 5 Travelers planning their 2022 trips can also unlock huge savings by being flexible and choosing the right month to travel:
- For domestic flights, the ideal month to depart is January when travelers can save more than 10 percent versus traveling in June.
- For international flights, August is the ideal month, where travelers can save almost 20 percent, versus traveling in December.
Splurge and go premium 6 Tickets in premium economy have never been cheaper. In 2021, premium economy ATPs cost almost 290 percent more than economy tickets, whereas in 2020 they were 365 percent more expensive. Pre-pandemic, in 2019 average prices for a premium economy ticket were a whopping 430 percent more expensive than economy. For the quarter of Americans (26%) wanting to upgrade their flight if they can afford it*, there has never been a better time than now.
Tips for saving on accommodations While domestic lodging rates dropped in 2020, throughout 2021 prices rose due to the high demand for domestic travel and remain slightly higher compared to 2019 7 .
Based on Expedia data, here are some simple tips to unlock savings on accommodation:
Ideal day of the week to book and stay 8
- For domestic holidays, the lowest average daily rate (ADR) for accommodation tends to occur on Mondays where travelers could save more than 15 percent versus booking and staying on the most expensive day, which is Friday.
- For international trips, book and stay on a Tuesday not on a Thursday to save nearly 10 percent.
Down-star to save Travelers can stretch their dollars further by choosing a lower star-rated hotel. Travelers can save almost 45 percent on average, by simply opting for a 4-star property over a 5-star, while down-starring to a 3-star from a 4-star can save travelers around 30 percent. 7
Car Rental Tips 9 Road trips and drivable destinations are expected to maintain their popularity into the coming year, so Expedia crunched the data to help road warriors obtain some savings.
- The best day to book a car is on a Saturday for domestic trips and Sunday for international car hires.
- Meanwhile, a Monday pick-up tends to be the cheapest for domestic bookings, while Tuesday is best for international trips.
Flexibility is a solid investment 7 As unpredictability associated with the pandemic remains, flexibility will remain a priority for travelers. Refundable lodging rates are around 15 percent more than non-refundable and allow travelers to make changes to their trip or cancel without penalty before a specified date.
Bundle and save 10 Travelers can unlock deeper discounts by simply booking their flight and hotel together with Expedia, rather than booking separately. On average, U.S. travelers can save up to 10 percent by bundling their flight and hotel together in one transaction.
Loyalty pays off When it comes to booking travel, membership has its privileges. By signing up for Expedia Rewards, travelers will receive benefits as soon as they join, including access to member-only prices and earning Expedia points on every trip. Silver and Gold members who book Expedia VIP Access hotels can also score extra perks such as room upgrades or spa credits, where available.
Additionally, travelers who shop with the Expedia Mobile App will not only have the ultimate travel companion at their fingertips but can also unlock up to 10 percent savings with mobile-exclusive hotel deals, as well as earn double Expedia Rewards points on every App booking. Travelers will also benefit from helpful alerts on their travel itineraries.

My first night camping in a travel trailer was the beginning of two years spent living full-time on the road in a vintage 1969 Airstream Overlander. I rolled all the way from Florida to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, from Austin to Arizona, and spent a spring camped out steps from the crisp rushing water of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. I never considered myself a rugged outdoorsy type, but after jumping in head first to the van-lifer lifestyle, I picked up a few skills, hacks, and gear tips that made life on the road a lot more comfortable .
As an RV camper, I chased an endless summer, following fair weather in order to camp comfortably year round. But for most of North America, spring and summer are peak camping seasons and great times to take stock of your camping gear as REI drops prices to make room for new inventory . You’ll find normally pricey outdoor gear with major markdowns (think: up to 70 percent off) that will delight any camper, hiker, and adventurer, as well as last-chance savings on winter apparel essentials and ski accessories. But, you'll have to act fast to snag the best deals; they're selling out fast. Read on to see what one former full-time camper recommends picking up from this limited time REI sale.
When I started camping, I was as far from Bear Grylls as you could get. I didn’t grow up camping and the hobby felt intimidating, but I soon learned that you don’t need to have all of the high-tech gear and equipment to have fun exploring the great outdoors. I started building my outdoor gear kit with the basics: a quality puffy jacket, base layers, a headlamp, and long-lasting boots, and made sure to rent a simple and compact four-person tent — but you can get this Northwood backpacking tent for 60 percent off , bringing it down to about the same price as a two-day rental.
However, the most important thing to have with you on a camping trip is a curious mind and a love for the surprises of nature. After that, you’ll want dry socks , plenty of layers , a raincoat , and extra water — don’t forget the extra water, even if you don’t think that you’ll need it. Whether you’re an avid outdoorsy type, or just want to be prepared for anything, these top REI spring deals will set you up for a summer season of well-traveled adventures.

Tactical outdoor bags are designed for usability and durability, making them a carry-all that can withstand all kinds of adventure. Many are equipped with features that come in handy no matter how you travel: waterproof exterior, RFID-protected pockets, ripstop fabric, washable interiors, alternating carrying straps, water bottle pockets, and collapsible capabilities.
When I traveled to Paris last year, I packed my collapsible REI duffel (now 30 percent off), folded compactly in its carrying envelope, in my carry-on. By the time I made my way back home, I had acquired so many souvenirs, vintage clothes, and French pharmacy beauty essentials that I filled up the duffel and checked it on my way back. On my next trip, I’ll be packing this on-sale convertible tote so I can transform it into a backpack when I need to hop on an e-bike to zip around.

When I was camping in the Airstream, I’d always have a “setup beer” and “breakdown coffee.” In the afternoon, once I arrived at a new campsite, I’d crack a cold one and pour it into an insulated thermos to keep it chilled while slowly setting up camp. In the morning, a piping hot coffee would go in the same stainless steel thermos so it stayed warm as I broke down and packed up. All that to say, a versatile beverage bottle that can do it all — for both hot and cold drinks — is a camper’s right-hand. REI sources some of the best brands for insulated drinkware, like Hydro Flask, whose Coffee Cup travel tumbler has been marked down to $26 this weekend.
But the retailer has more than just bottles on sale right now; REI’s other travel accessories are designed for smart, savvy adventures — like this Sherpani Women's Lima Shoulder Bag that's perfect for any outing and 30 percent off, or the Thule Subterranean PowerShuttle Travel Case that'll make packing a breeze.
- Hydro Flask Coffee Cup With Flex Sip Lid , $26 (originally $35)
- MicroLite Flip Cup Vacuum Water Bottle , $14 (originally $28)
- Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack 3-pack , $42 (originally $60)

In the spring, retailers make massive markdowns on last-season’s stock in order to make room for new season colors and styles. Fluffy fleeces and layerable flannels come in handy on chilly camp mornings, which are common in the summer if you’re pitching a tent in destinations like Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or the Rockies. And you might not need these high-tech insulated running leggings now, but you’ll be thanking yourself for jumping on their discounted price come those chilly fall mornings (which are just a few months down the road).
- Smartwool Men's Merino Plant-Based Dye T-shirt , $60 (originally $80)
- Flylow Lupine Women's Insulated Jacket , $69 (originally $230)

- Kuhl Women's Freeflex Cargo Shorts , $40 (originally $89)
- Patagonia Women's Wind Shield Pants $84 (originally $169)
- Pearl IZumi Women's Attack Cycling Tights , $30 (originally $100)

If you want to instantly blend in with the camping crowd, grab yourself a pair of Blundstone Classic Chelsea Boots (currently marked down by a rare 50 percent in select colors and selling out fast). The Tasmanian-made boots are on the feet of mountain town residents everywhere. But more than just a fashion statement, the fan-favorite boots are simply well-made and incredibly versatile as an everyday shoe. I’ve worn my Blundstones with a silk skirt and cashmere sweater, and also hiked them across muddy Appalachian trails and streams — they’re simple boots that can do a lot.
Now’s also the time to get your hands on the Nikes of the outdoor gear world: Chacos. The best (in my opinion) hiking sandal brand, Chaco's new-and-improved Z/Cloud 2 Sandals are 25 percent off ahead of all of your summer hikes.
- REI Co-op Women's Swiftland MT Trail-Running Shoes , $39 (originally $130)
- Chaco Women's Z/Cloud 2 Hiking Sandals , $75 (originally $100)
- REI Co-op Men's Flash TT Hiking Boots , $85 (originally $170)

- Altra Women's Lone Peak 7 Trail-Running Shoes , $105 (originally $130)
- Hoka Men's Arahi 6 Road-Running Shoes , $113 (originally $140)
- REI Co-op Men's Swiftland MT BlueSky Trail-Running Shoes , $75 (originally $150)

- Merrell Men's Moab Speed Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots , $128 (originally $170)
- Sorel Men's Mac Hill Lite Mid Waterproof Boots , $87 (originally $175)
REI Co-op Men's Flash TT Hiking Boots
Headlamps may look goofy, but they’re incredibly useful at the campsite. When you’re camping you always need your hands free, so things like flashlights actually aren’t super useful. The best headlamps have various light intensities (like your car’s headlights), and a red-light setting so you’re not blinding your fellow campmates and you can better view Dark Sky parks. This Snap Solo Headlamp from Princeton Tec has an articulating and removable lamp head and its 48 percent off.
Don’t forget to pack a small gas canister or portable stove , which are absolutely essential for boiling water — and most importantly, making coffee. Speaking of this essential elixir, don’t be caught on the trail with coffee grounds and no way to use them. Have a collapsible pour-over that lives in your camping kit, like this one from Pourigami that's 26 percent off.
- Alps Mountaineering Dash Chair , $45 (originally $120)
- MPowerd Luci Pro Series Inflatable Solar Lantern , $35 (originally $50)
- Alpine Mountain Gear Weekender Tent 4 , $65 (originally $150)
- Mountainsmith Antero Sleeping Bag , $65 (originally $120)
- IceMule Clear 15L Cooler , $55 (originally $110)
- Trekmates Bomberlite Sleeping Pad , $54 (originally $119)
- Big Agnes Goosenest Inflatable Cot , $163 (originally $300)
- Coleman OneSource Heated Stadium Seat , $61 (originally $140)
- Miir Pourigami Coffee Maker , $22 (originally $30)
Trekmates Bomberlite Sleeping Pad
It doesn’t have to be ski season to have a chilly morning at camp, where you need some extra comfort. If you’re camping in the Southern Hemisphere in the summer months (say Patagonia or Australia), then you can hit the jackpot on winter apparel before your trip. But even summer Alaska cruises call for insulated layers.
Winter gear is notoriously expensive, so spring sales are the best time to get good deals. Start with staple base layers that both insulate and wick away moisture, like this core base layer top from REI Co-Op that's 30 percent off. The gold standard of cold weather gear is a “puffy,” or down jacket. This Lole puffy (now 59 percent off) is a jacket that you can wear down to the threads. Still not warm enough? Stock up on Ignik's hand and toe warmers (one pack is currently less than a dollar), so you always have some on hand (pun intended).
- Flylow Women's Laurel Down Vest , $45 (originally $150)
- Picture Organic Clothing Men's Testy Bib Pants , $125 (originally $250)
- REI Co-Op Men's Midweight Base Layer Bottoms , $27 (originally $55)
- Anon Women's WM1 Snow Goggles and MFI Face Mask, $140 (originally $280)
- Lole Women's Piper Insulated Jacket , $90 (originally $219)
- Burton Women's Gore-Tex 3-in-1 Mittens , $59 (originally $85)
- The North Face Women's Freedom Insulated Snow Pants , $140 (originally $220)

"Every year, the Expedia ARC report serves as the ultimate cheat sheet for saving on travel," said Chandreyi Davis , vice president of brand marketing for Brand Expedia. "It offers an insider view that not only empowers travelers to make sound decisions but also lets them get more value out of every trip. At Expedia, our hope is that in 2022 these tips will help travelers go big and plan incredible trips."
