Expedia’s new campaign under the new Made to Travel positioning, which launched last week in the U.S. and will launch on 16 May in the UK and Germany, takes the audience on a kaleidoscopic and evocative journey, while reminding them of the unique benefits of traveling with Expedia.

With an inspiring voiceover courtesy of global traveler and actor Ewan McGregor, each of the three films focuses on a recurring visual motif that connects different places, moments and emotions, as people experience them.

In the launch spot ‘Lemons’, we watch a montage of travel moments pass by – a huge jar of preserved lemons, their bright yellow hues lighting up a shadowy bazaar; a dapper “sapeur” dancing in his lemon-festooned print suit, a family tussling with their slice of lemon-shaped kite at the beach - while Ewan’s voice over reminds us that, no matter what they want to experience, Expedia members save more on their travels.

Two further 30 sec spots ‘Bubbles’ and ‘Sand’ will follow, both continuing the leitmotif.

Launching in the UK today, May 16th, Expedia’s new campaign under the new Made to Travel positioning takes the audience on a kaleidoscopic and evocative journey, while reminding them of the unique benefits of travelling with Expedia. 

With an inspiring voiceover courtesy of global traveller and actor Ewan McGregor, each of the three films focuses on a recurring visual motif that connects different places, moments and emotions, as people experience them.

The campaign was developed collaboratively by Anomaly and Expedia’s global marketing team, which is helmed by industry and Apple veterans Muelas and Rousseau.

Ewan McGregor Visits Some Far-Out Locations In A BTS Of Expedia’s Super Bowl Commercial

With a touch of wisdom about what matters in life, Ewan McGregor makes you want to book a plane ticket ASAP with Expedia's Super Bowl LVI commercial.

“Stuff. We love stuff. And there’s some really great stuff out there,” says Ewan McGregor   at the start of Expedia’s commercial for Super Bowl LVI. “But, I doubt any of us will look back in our lives and think, ‘I wish I bought an even thinner TV,'” adds the Obi-Wan Kenobi star, as he begins to walk across different sets presumably for other commercials, each hoping to sell the viewer some new stuff . While dismissing the idea of finding a lighter light beer, or a smarter smartphone, Ewan suggests that what people truly value is not physical possessions. As Ewan walks out a door, “Whole Wide World” by punk legend Wreckless Eric kicks in. “Do you think that any of us will look back at our lives and regret the things we didn’t buy or the places we didn’t go?” he asks.

The extended version shows Ewan pondering more about the types of possessions that people value in this world. Travel is a foreign concept in the time of coronavirus. Still, as vaccinations become readily available and people implement more personal protocols to stop the spread, folks are looking to travel again. Expedia is also running a “Travel The Ads” campaign during Super Bowl LVI. “ :  Car commercial cruising through Norway? We’ll help a lucky winner get there. An ad for avocados? …Then maybe it’s off to the beaches of Mexico,” the company writes in a press release. “Trips (in the form of Expedia Rewards points) will come in a limited number of packages ranging from $5K to a grand prize valued at $25K. To win during Super Bowl LVI, one must follow @Expedia on Twitter, sign up to be an Expedia Rewards member (it’s free and easy to sign up ) and quote-tweet @Expedia relating to the commercial spots airing during the Entry Period, and include the hashtag #TravelTheAds between 3:30 pm PT and 11:59 pm PT on Sunday, 2/13.

Before the release of the full spot, Ewan gave Super Bowl viewers a unique take on what they could expect from the Expedia commercial. Not only did he tease the contents of the ad but he explained why he’s passionate about being a part of it. In this behind-the-scenes look of his Expedia Super Bowl commercial, Ewan said he isn’t selling but sharing why he believes it’s so important for people to travel.

“I think I’m here because I want to encourage people to travel. I really think it’s an important part of my life and it’s given me such wonderful memories,” he shared as he walked through the set of his Expedia commercial. “It made me grow. And I think it feeds your soul to travel. So to be involved in a commercial that encourages people to do that as opposed to aspire to own more stuff, that’s something I’m very happy to do.”

As he shared personal anecdotes about trips he’d take with his family, he physically went on a journey as the set changed from a space theme to a western theme and then eventually a medieval theme with swords. “I’ve learned that life is more experiences than owning things. It does fit me– this advert,” he shared as he walked through the desert. “It’s a sort of cheeky look at the stuff we’re being sold all the time instead of what we’re encouraging people to do.”

Not only did Ewan make a vacation sound really tempting right about now, but he succeeded in creating some anticipation around this Expedia commercial. How is Ewan going to travel from space to the desert to a rainy city in the span of a 30-second commercial? What other fun settings can we expect? Even without the sets, the passionate way he speaks about traveling is enough to get people on their laptops and book a spontaneous trip.

For those who tune into the Super Bowl for the commercials (guilty!), there are plenty of fun ones to look forward to.  Hannah Waddingham, who plays Rebecca in  Ted Lasso,  will be practicing her evil cackle in an ad for Rakuten while  Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on Zeus in a BMW commercial .   Guy Fieri even becomes the mayor of Flavor Town in an ad for Bud Lite Seltzer. It seems that this year, the Super Bowl commercials are more out of the box than ever and we’re not complaining.

Ewan McGregor is taking fans around the world in Expedia’s new Super Bowl commercial.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi star is encouraging viewers to ditch all the stuff that they’ve bought over the pandemic, and instead, choose to travel instead.

“We love stuff and there’s some really great stuff out there, but I doubt that any of us will look back in our lives and think, ‘I wish I’d gotten a slightly sportier SUV, bought an even thinner tv or found a trendier scent,’” Ewan says in the ad, while walking down a dimly lit village street, which turns into a set filled with far away places.

In the final moments of the ad, Ewan emerges on a bright seaside beach.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, AdWeek has shared a first look at Expedia’s commercial , which is set to air during the February 13th game. The thought provoking, 30-second spot stars Ewan McGregor, who reflects on the fact that memories made while traveling matter more than material purchases. “I doubt that any of us will look back on our lives and think, ‘I wish I’d bought an even thinner TV, found a lighter light beer, or had an even smarter smartphone,” muses the actor. “Do you think any of us will look back on our lives and regret the things we didn’t buy?” The ad closes with McGregor walking onto a beach, while Wreckless Eric’s new wave classic, “Whole Wide World,” soundtracks the picturesque moment.

Featuring guitar licks by Nick Lowe and drums by Steve Goulding, “Whole Wide World” was first released on Stiff Records in 1977, and became Wreckless Eric’s best known song. Throughout the decades, other musicians have also cemented its popularity through various covers, including Elvis Costello and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. In 2017, when Cage the Elephant covered “Whole Wide World” on their live album, Unpeeled , the song charted at No.11 on Billboard ’s Alternative Songs Chart.

In a 2008 interview with the blog Turn It Down , Eric reflected, “Back then, I had my first album and ‘Whole Wide World,’ it was great. But I was pretty weird, I was the space cadet, I was the rustic whiz kid. We played free jazz and people did not quite understand but they were mesmerized. It was this mixture of free jazz and pop.”

Since releasing the song 45 years ago, Eric has continued to tour and record, frequently alongside his wife, singer-songwriter Amy Rigby. While the artist is currently based in France, fans can catch Eric on March 4 in Queens, NY, following the Super Bowl ad appearance.

“I’ll always play ‘Whole Wide World’ in concert,” Eric told Billboard in 2018. “People will ask me if I’m tired of playing it and I say, ‘No, it’s a hit!’ Other people’s enthusiasm for it will always buoy me up and make me want to play it.”

Expedia Lemons Commercial

Expedia aims to inspire people, through its latest commercial to visit places that fulfill their dreams. The travel company celebrates lemon lovers in the world with an ad titled “Lemons”.

“Lemons. Lemons. Lemons. Look how nice they are. The moment you become an Expedia member, you can instantly start saving on your travels. So you can go and see all those lovely lemony lemons. And never wonder if you got a good deal. Because you did,” the voiceover says in the 30-second ad, which features a diverse cast of people who do various things related to their love for lemons. While some of them are enjoying a piece of fruit in the countryside, others are visiting a town in Italy named “Limone” (which means “Lemon” in English), others are running a marathon dressed in lemon costumes, and others slip into a relaxing hot spring with dozens of lemons.

“Sign up for free. Save with member pricing,” onscreen lines read at the end of the commercial before the tagline “Expedia. Made to Travel” appears.

  • Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your coat, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn arrives.
  • For just a few minutes, you’ll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic gadgets must also go through the scanner.
  • Any gels or liquids, such as toothpaste or perfume, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), zip-lock bag.
  • Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you’re less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and heavier-style shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
  • Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked luggage. They won’t be allowed in the cabin.
