Find the Joy in the Journey: Embracing the Road Trip of Life
What Does the Joy in the Journey Mean?
What Does the Bible say About Finding Joy?
In the Psalms, joy and rejoicing go hand in hand. Psalm 118:24 says: "This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it." NKJV The Bible says to be joyful because God has given you another day to live on this earth. Then be joyous because God is with you as you travel. Psalm 32:11 and Philippians 4:4 express being joyful in the Lord and making that joy known. As you travel and continue to seek God, Psalm 98:4 says to sing and shout your praises to the Lord. Add these Psalms and other scriptures on joy to your favorite bible verses to refer to when you need help finding joy.
7 Ways to Find Joy in the Journey
Here are seven ways to help you find joy in the journey.
When you go on a road trip, you usually make travel plans. Planning well increases your joy. The Bible talks about the need for a vision or a dream. Once you have a goal, you can get excited and joyful about your journey. God's Word has reminders that He has a plan for you, a good plan. It’s important to seek God and listen to His voice. Then follow His instructions to find joy in the journey. Psalm 23 explains that God will lead you, He will be with you, and you don’t have to be afraid.
You can use music to find joy. On a road trip, you may have music on the radio or even a special playlist created specifically for the expedition. When a song comes on, you may even sing along. Music can also help you in finding joy in the journey of life. Use music in your daily life and worship to rejoice with singing, praising, and thanksgiving. Music can transport you to another place and time. If you’re going through a less-than-scenic area of your journey, you can use music to brighten things up.
Purpose in your heart
Sometimes when you go on a road trip, you know that traffic will be heavy during part of the trip, so you make a conscious choice to accept that fact of the journey. In the same way, you can decide to have joy on the journey of life. You know that there will be some tough times. God has told you this, yet you can still find joy in the journey because it’s all part of life. Things may happen: such as job loss, physical pain, or issues with your physical health, yet you can still find joy despite a negative event.
Psalm 118:24 says we will rejoice. Will, means an act of will. In this case, joy is a decision and an act of obedience. Because God has blessed you with mercies and a new day, you will be glad, enjoy and lean into those blessings.

Give thanks and celebrate
When you go on a road trip, you’re already blessed to have a vehicle, money for gas and food, and family and friends to accompany you as you travel. God is the best gift giver. He goes way beyond new days and new mercies. Joy can be found on the road trip and in life as you count all the blessings God has bestowed upon you. Think about all the gifts, and then be grateful for those blessings. Rejoice and give thanks and praise for those blessings. Gratitude is finding joy in the journey.
Focus on the present
A common thing to happen on a road trip is to wonder, are we there yet? Once your focus is on the destination rather than the journey, it lessens your satisfaction. Try not to become impatient or allow negative thoughts to impede your joy. Focus on the present moment to find joy in the journey. The present moment is a meaningful part of the journey. God created the present to be experienced and enjoyed. You find enjoyment in travel when you look at where you are presently and give thanks for the moment. You can remember and assess how far you have traveled as long as you don’t get too focused on the past. Even if there is a detour in the original travel plan you envisioned, God will use the scenery you encounter on the detour to bring glory to Him.
Serve and give to others
Perhaps on the detour, you will encounter someone who needs your help or needs to hear your story. When you can help someone, it brings joy to you as well. You can find joy in the journey by serving and giving to others with your time, talent, and treasure. Being generous helps others while increasing your delight and sharing the love of God.
You seek the face of God by abiding with Him and inviting Him on the journey with you. Therefore, invite Him into your everyday life. Seeking God will build your faith. Strong faith assures you that any troubles or detours are small things.
When you go on a road trip, you see the beauty of God’s creation all around you. The more intentionally you are at looking at the scenery, the more beauty you see, the more in awe you become, and the more joy you experience. The same is true when you seek the face of God. The more you get to know Him, the more you realize how wonderful He is, the more in awe you become, and the more joy you experience. So seek God, praise Him, and find joy in the journey.
Final Thoughts on How to Find Joy in the Journey
Christians are blessed to have God take the lead on the road trip of life. Because He is with you, it’s easy to find joy. Knowing that He has a plan for you and that you can map out the vision for your journey will make you joyful to take action and get on the road. Having a musical playlist and singing praises brings joy as well. God has already stated that the journey will not be completely stress-free, but you can purpose in your heart ahead of time to be joyous nonetheless. Taking stock of your blessings and praising God during the journey, including detours, will keep you joyful. Perhaps the detour is a way to bring God glory. Remember to give and serve others along the way; you will receive joy in return. Most importantly, be intentional in seeking God so your journey will be joy-filled.

Joy for the Journey
The giant stealing your joy and breaking your heart can be stopped. Shake off the binding chains, and run forward with purpose, intention, and hope.
“T his is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, NKJV).
Are giants stealing your joy? Giants may come in the form of illness, broken relationships, fears, uncertain careers, death, divorce, or issues from our past. Giants want to scare us and knock the wind out of us. They leave us feeling hopeless, burned out, cheated on, lied to, robbed, and scammed. Our hearts can be broken. Our souls can be battered. We become the “walking wounded.”
But as big as they are, giants can fall. The giant stealing your joy and breaking your heart can be stopped. Shake off the binding chains, and run forward with purpose, intention, and hope.
I choose hope by deciding to no longer be stuck in the rut of sadness, numbness, anger, unwise spending, or wheel-spinning emptiness. When I intentionally begin to blame less and bless more, frown less and laugh more, hate less and love more, doubt less and dream more, gripe less and cheer more, sit less and move more, discourage less and encourage more, eat less and pray more, fear less and hope more, I feel the joy returning! I start to be more of who God created me to be!
It’s easy to get lost and confused in the everyday, especially if we are going through the daily grind feeling unsatisfied and insignificant. We get trapped into wishing our lives away.
I say “we” because I am guilty of this, too. I still have days when I feel sad, down, or worried. Some days, I have a hard time getting started. The key to my joy is focusing on what God tells me, not what the world throws at me. A new beginning can begin at any time. Here’s how:
1. Say to yourself, “It’s time for a change.”
You are never too old to change or begin again. Change often means changing what you commit to. Practice saying “no” to the things you need to let go of and “yes” to the things that will improve your life, make you better, and fill you with joy, because they are what you love to do.
Instead of shooting from the hip, shoot from the lip! Get a grip on the lip so life won’t be exhausting. Say no and refocus on what gives you joy and purpose. Your greatest accomplishments will be that you had the courage to begin and the endurance to keep going.
The only way to experience joy in your journey is to do what you have a passion for, do what is right for you. Move forward, keep your eyes on the goal, and never miss the blessings along the way. Do what you can to make things happen in a positive way, and quickly dismiss negativity. Live a life you can be proud of. If your priorities change and you find yourself hiding from people or feeling ashamed, find the strength to start over again, even if that means saying, “I’m sorry.”
2. Decide what is most important, and stick with it.
Busyness is not a spiritual gift. It distracts you from what is important. There is a big difference between being busy and being productive. Instead of running nowhere in every direction, walk in the direction you want to go.
Make a list of the most important things in your life. List them in order. Give up the things that weigh you down and cause imbalance. They can make you angry, stressed, snappy, and cold. When we have balance, we are more kind, caring, compassionate, and understanding. Only then can we make a profound difference in the lives of others, as well as ourselves. Compassion will have us hugging the hopeless, comforting the sad and grieving, and laughing with those who haven’t laughed in a long time.
3. Choose to be positive.
Life gets better when you decide to make it better; it always begins with a choice. Moaning and groaning and whining are a trap. Do not give in to this kind of behavior.
Life is full of challenges and opportunities. When you grasp courage and boldness with both hands, you can make a difference, not only in your life but the lives of others. People are attracted to such people because, when the world feels like it is crashing down, positive people will find a way out of the chaos with a grin on their faces.
4. Realize you can’t fix everything or everyone.
We can only control ourselves; as hard as we try, we cannot control others. When we try to, we become entangled in a web of confusion, frustration, and stress. Then we have a mess. When it looks like nothing is changing and you are manipulating a situation outside your control, go to a quiet place, refocus, and let God deal with it. You are not a self-appointed Holy Spirit for people. God can handle it better than you can. Let go of the need to control everyone else’s lives, and search within the depths of your soul for the peace that surpasses all understanding.
5. Leave the past behind.
We all have a story to tell and a wound to heal. Some of us visit the dark places of our past day after day. We know it’s poison, but we continue to embrace it thinking we can put the pieces of the puzzle together again. Or we go over the “woulda, shoulda, couldas” thinking we can change the past.
Leave the pieces where they are. Walk out of the dark place knowing that the puzzle can’t be put back the way it was. Close the door; walk into the light with your arms open wide. Get on the path to recovery, hope, joy, and peace. Seek to “get even” with all those who have done right by you and stop wasting time trying to get even with those who have done you wrong.
6. Be an inspiration.
No matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems appear to be, or how insignificant you might feel, you can make a difference in the world. You can’t be everything to everybody, but you can still be something to someone. Most people will tell you that the reason they changed is because someone cared enough to listen and show them kindness in a world that at times is so unkind.
When our final days come, we will not remember entire days, we will remember moments. The big things we tried to accomplish often pale in the end when compared to the little blessings along the way. Don’t let something that does matter lose out to something that doesn’t. Take time to notice those things from this day forward, one day and one decision at a time. And taste a little joy in your journey.

A year into working with Microsoft Copilot , we’ve learned a lot from our customers about how people are using AI at work. We’ve also learned from our own company-wide rollout to more than 200,000 employees —what’s working, where there are challenges, and what early behaviors can teach us about broader impacts to adoption and establishment of new work patterns. One of the biggest takeaways is that AI reinvention is a whole new way of working that involves both software and culture. It’s a cultural shift. Microsoft Viva empowers leaders and organizations to make that shift. We’re excited to announce new capabilities to help drive enterprise-wide adoption of Copilot, including the general availability of Microsoft Copilot Dashboard and Microsoft Copilot Academy, powered by Viva, which will be available to all Copilot for Microsoft 365 customers.
Empower and engage your workforce with next-generation AI and insights in Microsoft Viva.
Microsoft Copilot Dashboard is now generally available
The Microsoft Copilot Dashboard is an out of the box report designed for business leaders to easily understand the impact of Copilot for Microsoft 365 by providing privacy-protected insights across every stage of your AI transformation journey. Building on the initial release at Microsoft Ignite, which included readiness and usage data across Microsoft 365 apps, this release offers additional pivots that combine Copilot usage metrics with organizational context and collaboration data, enabling deeper views of adoption and impact. Copilot customers will have the flexibility to filter by attributes like department, teams, or roles, understand differences between groups, and compare those same measures between users and non-users. Viva Insights customers can use analyst workbench capabilities to dive deeper with custom reports, including incorporating data from other relevant sources. And for a limited time only , Copilot for Microsoft 365 customers will be eligible to access Viva Insights at no additional cost .
We are also excited to announce that starting in 2024 Q3, the Copilot Dashboard will be available to all Copilot for Microsoft 365 customers at no additional cost and will not require a Viva license. You can access the dashboard in the Viva Insights app in Microsoft Teams or via the web app . Select the “Copilot Dashboard” option from the left navigation menu and start exploring results from your organization. Additionally, Copilot for Microsoft 365 customers will be eligible for a promotional offer that will provide access to all of Viva Insights , including Copilot Dashboard, as well as access to advanced insights and manager and leader insights. Contact your account team to learn more about how you can take advantage of this offer.
In addition to having the right data-driven insights, successful AI reinvention often requires a change management strategy that includes arming employees with the right knowledge, developing clear and consistent communications, and understanding employee feedback to address any gaps or challenges. Microsoft Viva helps you develop employee skills, drive awareness, foster champions, and dig deeper into the impact of Copilot across your organization.
Enable employees with AI knowledge and skills
Our Work Trend Index showed that 82% of leaders said their employees will need new skills to be prepared for the growth of AI. I’m excited to announce the general availability of Microsoft Copilot Academy , where we’ve centralized those learning experiences for your organization to supercharge their Copilot skills. Copilot Academy is available in Viva Learning and starting in 2024 Q3, it will be available to all Copilot for Microsoft 365 customers at no additional cost and will not require a Viva license.
The Copilot Academy includes curated learning paths designed by Microsoft experts to help your employees discover, learn about, and use Copilot experiences effectively. The initial release features a combination of standard generative-AI learning content (such as “Intro to prompts”) and a series of learning paths specific to Copilot for Microsoft 365 (such as “Summarize email threads with Copilot in Outlook”). We will continue to enhance Copilot Academy in the coming months, including hands-on experiences hosted by Copilot Lab in our next release.
Copilot Academy is available in Viva Learning , your central hub for learning, so it’s easy for users to access, discover, and share within the Microsoft 365 tools they’re already using. It is preloaded and requires no admin setup or configuration, so your Microsoft 365 admins can focus on helping drive Copilot adoption. Check out our setup documentation to get started, and stay tuned for updates on content, experience, and feature enhancements coming soon. Additionally, to help our customers develop a skillset related to AI tool usage—like prompt engineering—we’ve developed a set of learning content available on Copilot Lab and Microsoft Learn that you can access today.
Build excitement and momentum around Copilot
Getting the word out, often and early, about new technologies like AI is key to successful change management. With Viva Amplify , an internal communications platform, you can elevate your Copilot messaging and energize employees by reaching them in the channels they use most often—email, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Viva Engage. And we’ve designed the new Copilot Deployment Kit in Viva Amplify specifically to help you launch Copilot campaigns with ease. Your corporate communications team, your change team, or your early champions can use pre-built campaign templates to drive awareness, and help employees learn what it can do for them. It comes with pre-drafted content, videos, guides, and publications that can easily be customized and sent to help users learn about Copilot. And in the reporting tab, you have rich campaign analytics to understand engagement and where to make improvements.
Grow the Copilot conversation through community
Fostering leadership communications and AI champions in your organization can also help accelerate Copilot adoption. Viva Engage can enable leaders and community champions to share strategy, learnings, and experiences broadly with their organization. In the coming weeks, Viva Engage will add built-in capabilities to help you accelerate adoption, where admins can enable a new custom-made Copilot community with one click that launches an onboarding checklist, recommends pre-seeded content and conversation starters, and supports dynamic community membership based your organization’s existing Copilot licensing allotment.
Corporate communicators or community managers can build campaigns for Copilot based on what people are talking about, so the conversation remains relevant and reaches the right people. As people post comments, Copilot can help draft responses and provide analytics around engagement, trending topics, reach, and sentiment. And people can use Answers in Viva to ask questions and find Copilot knowledge and resources around the organization. The new Intelligent Importer —now generally available—makes it easy to generate and add your own question-and-answer for this community to support commonly asked questions.
And lastly, new network analytics include detailed engagement metrics and theme extraction to show what’s trending and what’s top of mind for employees across all communities.
Gain a deeper understanding of AI readiness, adoption, and impact
Innovative companies and early adopters keep up with their Copilot deployment by engaging employees through the journey, that includes continuously seeking employee feedback and making the right adjustments to manage a successful rollout. In addition to using Viva to measure organizational-wide employee engagement on your AI transformation strategy, we’re introducing new research-backed Microsoft Copilot Impact survey templates in Viva Glint and Viva Pulse designed to gauge sentiment on how Copilot is impacting employees while benchmarking those insights against industry research. The survey results will integrate directly with the Copilot Dashboard so that talent and business leaders can see the data in a unified view. Questions will include:
- Quality: Copilot helps improve the quality of my work or output.
- Effort: Using Copilot helps me spend less mental effort or mundane or repetitive steps.
- Speed: Copilot allows me to complete tasks faster.
- Productivity: When using Copilot, I am more productive.
By combining workplace collaboration and behavioral insights with employee survey data, Microsoft customer, dentsu , one of the top creative media companies in the world, was able to see the direct value and productivity impact of Copilot on its workforce.
“Our recent analysis shows employees are saving at least 15 minutes, if not 30 minutes a day by using Copilot. We are seeing a noticeable shift in how they are using the technology, spending less on meetings, emails, calls, or chats, using the time they get back to focus on deep work without interruptions and to invest in their teams.” —Kate Slade, Director of Emerging Technology Enablement at dentsu

You may need the help of a financial advisor even if you aren't wealthy.
Ever wonder why Olympic athletes have coaches? These are individuals at the very top of their game possessing unparalleled skill and expertise, and yet there is no single Olympic athlete out there who does not have a coach.
The answer is that there is tremendous value in having someone in your corner supporting you, someone who can provide you with a roadmap and hold you accountable, someone to act as an objective sounding board, and who can point out your blind spots and correct your form.
This is true across all aspects of life. Whether pursuing an athletic goal, a career goal or a life transition–there are coaches who can help you get there. In the world of personal finance, the coaches are financial advisors. But how do you determine whether and when you need one, what type of advisor is best for your needs, and how to select one? These are the questions this article aims to help you answer.
A financial advisor is often described as the quarterback of your financial team. Their role is to survey the entire landscape of your financial life, encompassing your current financial position, portfolio allocation , goals, financial beliefs and values. Their leadership is crucial in prioritizing, strategizing and executing your plan to help you accomplish your goals. This could include engaging other experts such as an estate planning attorney or insurance broker, to ensure that all areas of your financial life are taken care of.
The cornerstone offering of a financial advisor is the financial plan, which illustrates how income, expenses, and short and long-term goals all interact to impact financial stability throughout your lifetime. With the help of the financial plan, an advisor can identify possible issues far down the road that require course correction today to avoid, and offer insights on proactive measures to navigate and plan for them. Whether it's ensuring sufficient liquidity before welcoming a new family member, embarking on a sabbatical or planning for a home purchase or retirement , the financial plan serves as a navigational tool throughout the advisory relationship.
The best financial advisors will do more than crunch the numbers, they’ll also help you develop a framework for financial decision-making.
The brain trust at Forbes has run the numbers, conducted the research, and done the analysis to come up with some of the best places for you to make money in 2024. Download Forbes' most popular report, 12 Stocks To Buy Now.
There are several situations when you may consider hiring a financial advisor.
- You have a large investment portfolio (above $250,000): The larger your portfolio, the greater the stakes.
- You have a complex financial situation with several competing goals : A financial advisor can help you prioritize your goals and identify possible conflicts between them. For example, if you would like to have kids in the next few years and want to step out of the workforce to be a stay-at-home dad, a financial advisor can illustrate what needs to happen in advance to prepare financially, and the long-term implications of that decision.
- You are navigating a life transition, such as marriage, divorce, retirement, loss of a spouse, or you’ve received a large inheritance: Any time that you receive a big windfall or experience a financial shake-up in your life, it makes a lot of sense to engage a financial advisor who can help you understand how the change in circumstance impacts you in the near and long-term.
- You don’t have the time or desire to dedicate to your finances: There are some people who don’t want to deal with the minutiae of their personal finances and prefer that someone else manage it and tell them the one or two things they need to focus on. You could have a demanding job and children leaving no time or energy to devote to personal finance, or you may simply have little interest in the subject. If you fall into either camp, a financial advisor can help you stay on track financially, while you take care of the rest of your busy life.
- You want a second set of eyes on your finances: Whether you’re early on in your money journey or you’ve been managing your personal financial affairs confidently for years, there can be great value in meeting with an advisor to get a second opinion to ensure that you are on the right track.
Understanding whether you can manage your personal finances independently depends more on your personality and inclination than the size of your portfolio. Consider DIY investing if you genuinely enjoy personal finance, actively oversee your savings and investments and are confident in portfolio allocation. If married, ensure both partners actively communicate and collaborate on finances to avoid imbalances in decision-making.
While interest and confidence are important, competence is crucial. Be honest with yourself about your knowledge and abilities. Even if you are experienced in managing personal finances, occasional consultations with a financial advisor for a comprehensive review may still be beneficial.
Financial advisors can be found in three general flavors, differentiated by their level of human involvement, cost structure and tailored advice.
Robo advisors are algorithm-driven platforms that provide standardized portfolio allocations based on risk assessments. They offer cost-effective solutions with benefits such as consistent portfolio alignment, and automated features like tax loss harvesting and ongoing rebalancing.
Online financial advisors, a tier above robo advisors, may offer additional access to a financial planning professional, while traditional financial advisors rely on human expertise and relationships for personalized advice tailored to individual client goals, risk tolerance and financial situations.
Natalie Colley
The choice between these options depends on your level of investible assets, preferences, financial goals and the level of human interaction you desire.
When looking for a financial advisor, there are several important qualifications and details to assess.
Credentials and Qualifications
Believe it or not, no credentials are required to hold yourself out as a financial advisor or financial planner. Therefore, it is especially important to look for credentials as an initial indicator of a professional’s commitment to the industry and competence. The gold standard qualification in the financial advisor profession is the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP) designation. This certification demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in financial planning, including investments , insurance, taxes , retirement and estate planning.
Secondary to the CFP designation, other credentials that indicate a high degree of experience and expertise in the profession include:
- Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA): A credential focusing on guiding individuals through the financial complexities of divorce.
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA): A credential for investment professionals, focusing on portfolio management and financial analysis.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA): A professional accounting qualification that can be valuable for financial advisors, especially those involved in tax planning.
- Personal Financial Specialist (PFS): A designation for CPAs who specialize in personal financial planning.
- Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA): Emphasizes investment management and portfolio construction.
- Registered Investment Advisor (RIA): While not a traditional credential, advisors registered with the SEC as RIAs must adhere to specific regulatory standards.
Just as not all professionals who hold themselves out to be financial advisors are credentialed, neither are they beholden to the same ethical standards. The highest ethical standard is called the Fiduciary Duty. An advisor who has taken an oath to act as a fiduciary (all CFP professionals) must put the client’s best interest ahead of their own, must act with diligence, prudence, and skill in managing the client’s affairs, and must provide full transparency in all actions.
Stop chasing shadows in the market. Forbes' expert analysts have pinpointed the 12 superstars poised to ignite returns in 2024. Don't miss out—download 12 Stocks To Buy Now and claim your front-row seat to the coming boom.
While more experience does not guarantee quality, experience in both life and in the profession can help to broaden an advisor’s perspective and refine their skills.
Many advisors specialize in helping clients with specific needs, such as those going through a divorce, LGBTQ+, doctors, etc. It can make sense to work with an advisor who regularly works with clients in a similar situation, as they will have deep expertise in the unique challenges that you face.
Importantly, review an advisor’s Form ADV to check for any disciplinary history. The ADV Part 2 Brochure has particularly useful information relating to the way an advisor charges their clients and the services they offer. To find the Form ADV for any firm and advisor, use the SEC’s Investment Advisor Public Disclosure database . Disclosures indicate that there may be a customer complaint or arbitration, regulatory action, bankruptcy filing, or some other event of which you need to be aware.
Financial advisors charge in various ways. At the highest level, fee models can be split into two buckets–fee-only or commission-based.
Fee-only advisors charge fees directly to clients based on a predetermined schedule and do not earn commissions on any investments or products they recommend. For example, if a fee-only advisor recommends that their client buy life insurance, they would not receive any compensation for the life insurance the client buys. The benefits of a fee-only arrangement are more transparent fees and a lack of conflict of interest with respect to recommendations.
The potential for conflicts of interest is one challenge associated with the commission-based model, and why it is not recommended. Advisors may be motivated to recommend products that generate higher commissions rather than those that best suit the client's needs. Commission-based advisors most often work for either insurance companies or banks (this often includes the advisor who helps your company with their 401(k) administration ).
It’s an excellent idea to speak with two or three advisors before making a selection. There are several trusted resources out there to help you curate an initial list of candidates.
- Personal Recommendations : Odds are, many of your friends and family work with a financial advisor. Ask them about what services they receive, their advisor’s communication style and whether they are happy with the relationship.
- Referral From Other Professionals: Your accountant, attorney or other professionals you work with may be able to recommend financial advisors. They often have a network of contacts and may know someone with the expertise you need.
- Professional Organizations: Look for financial advisors who are members of reputable professional associations, such as the Financial Planning Association ( FPA ) or the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors ( NAPFA ). Members of these organizations often adhere to high ethical standards and professional conduct.
It can be nerve wracking to meet with an advisor for the first time. Here are some questions to get the conversation started.
- How often do you meet with your clients?
- Who will be working with me?
- What type of clients do you specialize in working with?
- What licenses, certifications or credentials do you have? How long have you worked in the profession?
- What services do you offer beyond investment management? Do you provide a comprehensive written analysis of my financial situation?
- How is the firm compensated? Do you charge separately for financial planning?
- Are you fee-only? Do you accept commissions and/or sell insurance products?
- Are you a fiduciary?
The Importance Of Communication
When selecting an advisor, pay close attention to their communication style and responsiveness. An advisor’s prompt responsiveness serves as a good indicator of their diligence, and communication style will give you a sense of whether they will be a good personality fit.
When hiring a financial advisor, there are several red flags to look out for.
Lack of Transparency
Particularly around fees, a lack of transparency is a clear indicator that the advisor may not act in your best interest at all times. If the fees are not easily understandable, if fees are only quoted on a quarterly basis (for AUM fees) to make them appear smaller than they are, or if the advisor is not up front about potential conflicts of interest, these could all be red flags.
High-Pressure Sales Tactics
No explanation is needed, as you’ll know it when you feel it. If you feel that you are being pressured to make a decision that is a huge red flag.
Unrealistic Promises
Beware any advisor who guarantees returns at any level or who says they can consistently beat the market. Investing is inherently unpredictable and ethical advisors will not guarantee specific outcomes.
Years ago, when assessing daycares for my then 4-month-old daughter, I was given good advice from another parent, who told me that “you likely won’t know for sure whether it’s the right fit until your daughter is actually attending. Once she’s enrolled and going every day, you’ll very quickly know.” The same could be said for finding a financial advisor. Because we’re talking about your hard-earned money here, it is a big decision and you should do your due diligence. However, there is also risk in letting analysis paralysis set in, and doing nothing.
Write down the top two or three things you aim to achieve via a relationship with a financial advisor, do some research to determine whether those can be accomplished via a robo, online or traditional advisor, interview/research a couple of options and make a decision. Once you begin working with the advisor, you will have a very good idea whether it is the right fit. And if it changes again in a few years as your situation evolves, you can always make a change.
Are financial advisors worth it?
As it is with nearly everything, value is in the eye of the beholder. If you lack the time or desire to stay on top of your financial affairs, using an advisor can be worth the fee simply by keeping you fully invested in a well-diversified portfolio over your lifetime. The fee could easily pay for itself in returns you otherwise would have missed out on.
For those with complex financial goals, investments or tax situations, a financial advisor can provide valuable expertise. Their knowledge in areas such as retirement planning, tax strategies and estate planning can be particularly beneficial.
Even those who feel confident investing and navigating large expenditures and transitions would likely find value in working with an advisor periodically, who can provide an objective perspective.
How do financial advisors make money?
Financial advisors make money either by charging fees directly to clients for services (fee-only), taking a percentage of assets under management or through commissions from product sales (not recommended). Some advisors use a hybrid model of some or all of the above.
What is a fiduciary financial advisor?
A fiduciary financial advisor must act in the client’s best interest at all times. Commission‑based advisors are often held to a "suitability standard," which means that the products they recommend must only be suitable for the client's financial situation, goals, and risk tolerance.
To understand the difference between the Fiduciary Standard and the Suitability Standard, imagine shopping for a dress. A sales clerk held to the Suitability Standard is only required to tell you whether the dress fits, whereas a sales clerk held to the Fiduciary Standard must tell you whether the dress actually looks good on you.
Are financial advisor fees tax deductible?
Following the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, financial advisor fees are no longer tax-deductible on a federal level. However, some states still allow a deduction.

This Filipino film is a must-watch, especially for fans familiar with the previous show that united the starring trio, bringing their unique chemistry within this cinematic journey.
Starring Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia, and Kaye Abad, in the lead roles, this drama is directed by RC Delos Reyes.
What is the plot of 'A Journey' aka 'Podróż'?
Three lifelong friends embark on an unforgettable journey, discovering harsh truths along the way. Kaye Abad portrays a character who, upon learning her cancer has returned, decides to forego treatment.
She invites her husband and best friend for a road trip across Tasmania, Australia, aiming to fulfill her bucket list wishes.
The official synopsis reads, "Refusing treatment for her cancer, a woman goes on a road trip across Tasmania to check off items on her bucket list with her husband and best friend."
Who stars in 'A Journey' aka 'Podróż'?
Paolo Contis
Paolo Contis, with a blend of Italian and Filipino heritage, stepped into the spotlight as part of 'Star Circle Batch 3' in 1993. Renowned as a child actor in the mid-90s, he was a familiar face on shows like 'Ang TV'.
In 2002, Paolo made a switch to GMA Network, embracing more mature roles as he transitioned from a child actor to a teen idol. At GMA, he showcased his versatility in various shows, frequently appearing in supporting, comedic, and villainous roles.

Here's how much money I made as a software engineer at Meta, Apple, and Oracle
- Sandeep Rao is a software engineer who has worked at Meta, Apple, and Oracle.
- When he first started his career as a new graduate, his compensation was only $15,000.
- He explains how, thanks to high performance and negotiation skills, he now makes nearly $700,000.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sandeep Rao, a 32-year-old software engineer based in San Jose, California. Business Insider has verified his income with documentation. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.
My salary journey in Big Tech has seen my total compensation — which includes base salary, bonuses, and stocks — increase from $15,000 in 2012 to $685,000 in 2024.
I'm a staff software engineer and have worked at three different tech companies, moving from Oracle to Apple to Meta. Over my career, I've led the development of successful software apps and features from scratch that are used every day by millions of people across the world.
While I have made my career moves primarily based on which areas of software engineering I'd get to work on, compensation is also important to me, so I've been strategic and negotiated for higher salaries with each move.
Tech companies use tools like additional equity to retain high-performing employees. In my experience, if you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.
I took a low-paying job to get my foot in the door
While I got my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering , I realized midway through college that software engineering was my passion and pivoted to pursue a career in software instead.
My first job was as a software developer at Oracle in India. While Oracle isn't generally low-paying in the tech industry, my salary of 850,000 rupees, or $15,000, was low compared to what new grads were making at that time in competing Big Tech companies like Microsoft or Amazon because it was a "take it or leave it" new grad offer.
The work was unappealing to me because it didn't align with my career interests — I didn't want to continue building expertise in that specific area of software engineering — but I took it to get my foot in the door of a Big Tech company and build credibility.
I knew I eventually wanted to end up where all the action is — Silicon Valley . I worked at Oracle from 2012 to 2014, and during this time, I applied to graduate schools in the US because I felt a formal computer science degree would help me compete with the talented people in the Valley.
I got accepted into a graduate program in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I left behind my family and friends in India and moved to the US with nothing but a suitcase and $65,000 in student debt.
Grad school was hard, but the doors it opened for me made the struggle worth it.
I was ecstatic to get a job at Apple
I finished grad school and got a job as a software engineer at Apple in Cupertino, California, where my base salary was $115,000.
I was ecstatic to work at one of the best companies in the world and felt my dreams were coming true. But I realized I wanted to work on more direct user-facing applications rather than on technology that ran under the hood.
Initially, I considered looking for new opportunities within Apple, but between high taxes, the high cost of living, and my student loans, I felt more compelled to switch companies, given that I'd likely receive a significant salary bump .
I had gotten a very small cost-of-living raise on my base salary at Apple, but it wasn't significant; not getting a bigger raise wasn't a big motivator in my decision to change companies, but it certainly made my choice easier.
My negotiation skills helped me get a 10% salary increase
At the end of 2017, I moved to Meta (then Facebook) in Menlo Park, California. I wanted to experience the culture of younger internet-based companies whose products are used by billions of people.
When I received my offer, I did my research to get a clear understanding of what my market value was and what salary I wanted to land on. I also learned what parts of my total compensation are negotiable, such as stocks and the sign-on bonus, and what is non-negotiable, like base salary and annual bonuses.
I was prepared to negotiate and walked away with an offer of $140,000, which was 10% more than their original offer.
In 2021, I landed a large-scale project at Meta that added a lot of value to the Messenger app and worked with several cross-functional teams across engineering, design, data science, and legal.
My accomplishments, such as this one, and high performance at work got me the promotions, visibility, and leverage to negotiate for higher pay and a successful salary journey.
Every year between 2018 to 2023, my base salary increased — as did my total compensation — through a combination of performance-based yearly stock refreshers, additional boosts from promotions, and stock market appreciation.

Compensation in a tech career usually gets more and more equity-heavy than salary-heavy, so base salaries don't increase as quickly as equity, but my salary and total annual compensation steadily rose:
2012-2014: $15,000 total compensation
Grad School
2014-2016: $0 total compensation
Student loan debt: $65,000
2016: $130,000 total compensation
2017: $165,000 total compensation
2018: $230,000 total compensation
2019: $240,000 total compensation
2020: $350,000 total compensation (promotion)
2021: $510,000 total compensation
2022: $375,000 total compensation (promotion, but total compensation dropped due to stock price drop)
2023: $545,000 total compensation
In 2024, I'm projected to make $685,000 through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock.
Five strategies for increasing my compensation package
Over the years, I learned five salary strategies that helped me grow my salary and overall compensation:
1. Always do your homework about market rates for your role, level, and location — especially when you switch jobs.
Switching jobs is a good way to increase your income.
Even if money may not be the primary motivator for a job switch, I always make sure to be conscious and strategic about my compensation by doing salary research to avoid leaving any money on the table.
When I started doing salary research during my switch to Meta, I found out my market value was much higher than what I was making at Apple at that time. This helped me start my negotiations with Meta at the market rate rather than the salary I was making.
I used Levels.fyi , Blind , and Glassdoor to find salary information and clearly understand my market value. Keep yourself updated on these benchmarks even if you don't plan on a job change anytime soon, so you know you're on par with the market, and any salary difference is offset by other factors such as better work-life balance.
2. Never let your bad salary "baggage" carry over to your new job.
If your salary isn't up to market standards right now, don't let it affect your pay at the next job. Otherwise, it'll lead to a cycle where you'll be underpaid for the rest of your career.
Employers and recruiters could use your salary history to give you only a modest raise, while your actual market value could easily be double or triple your most recent salary.
In California, labor laws make it illegal for employers to ask you about your current salary and salary history. You're also allowed to ask potential employers for the pay range for the position you're applying for.
If your state has similar protections, just being aware of this law can help you make any corrections to your pay during negotiations. This helped me start offer negotiations from my market value instead of my current pay.
3. Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith to make that 10x impact on your career.
That could involve switching from a non-tech job to a tech job or taking a short-term hit for long-term gain. For example, I picked Oracle for my first job despite the low pay and unappealing work so I could build credibility to get into a Tier 1 grad school.
I also took a loan of about $65,000 to pay for Carnegie Mellon, even though I could have chosen to go to a cheaper public university.
Deciding to work at Oracle and attend Carnegie Mellon cost me a few years and a lot of debt, but doing so opened doors unlike anything else, and I haven't looked back ever since.
4. Negotiate to keep your base salary from falling behind
It's inevitable for your salary to fall behind as you stay longer at a company, especially in tech due to restricted stock unit (RSU) "cliffs."
Most RSU packages offered to new employees in the tech industry have a two- to four-year vesting period. Unless the employer offers a significant pay bump along the way, total compensation usually takes a drop after this vesting period. Many companies also offer annual performance-based stock refreshers to lower this salary gap, but they're usually not as large as the initial grant.
If you love working at your company and feel forced to move just to get a raise, you can ask your senior leadership to make a "correction." After all, it's much more expensive and time-consuming for employers to hire new people than to retain good employees.
Most Big Tech companies have employee retention programs like additional or discretionary equity. Additional equity programs are mainly used to retain high-performing employees, so they're usually highly selective.
This is how I was able to keep my compensation at or above market level despite spending six years at Meta. When I was reaching the end of my vesting period in my fourth year, I had a conversation with my senior leadership to see if there was any room for a pay correction so I could go back to focusing on my work 100% without worrying about salary.
Being prepared with my predicted compensation drop and market data greatly helped me build a cogent narrative going in. If you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.
5. Don't assume people will reward your work or anticipate your needs — ask.
Always ask for what you want , whether it's a raise or that interesting project that just came in. The worst that will happen is you'll get a "no." If you don't ask, nobody will know, or even worse, people may assume that you're happy with what you have and move on.
I used this strategy when I heard of a new company initiative and asked to be a founding engineer because I was looking to create more impact in my role. Despite the high risk and ambiguity involved, I successfully delivered on the projects, which eventually led to a promotion. None of this would've been possible if I hadn't asked.
At the end of the day, you're your biggest advocate when it comes to your salary and career journey. There's no substitute for hard work, but being strategic about how you achieve your goals can go a long way. Sometimes, you have to take big risks and step out of your comfort zone to get that high-paying dream job.
