7.3L cold misfire/rough idle

The bus has a build date of 07/2002 and has 93K on the odometer Problem: When cold starting the engine, it has a misfire for about 10 minutes or so when the block heater is not plugged in. This occurs with the vehicle parked inside with an ambient temp of 65 degrees. If the block heater is plugged in there is very little or no misfire at all. History: I purchased the vehicle 1 year ago and it was not well cared for. I knew it had some problems. Rite off that bat I had to replace both batteries and eventually both alternaters; problem solved. Within a couple days after I got it back to my shop it failed to start. It cranked over fine but would not start. I took it to a local shop and they replaced injector #6 and also the glow plug relay and the injector driver module. The limo at this point would at least start and run fine so long as the block heater was plugged in. Again, keep in mind that the limo is stored inside. I used the limo all last season and always had to keep it plugged in and was constantly reminding my drivers to start the limo at least once per hour so the engine temp would never reach the ambient temp. Jump forward to last Saturday 01/14/2012: I had a ford mechanic look at the limo at my shop and he scanned it for fault codes. None were listed and the batteries have not been disconnected for over a year. He also performed a buzz test on the injectors and found that injectors 3-4-7 sounded weeker than the rest. I puchased from Ford 3 replacements as well as 8 new glow plugs and installed them. After getting the limo running again it idled rough but that was on initial start up after replacing injectors and glow plugs of which we attributed to air in the fuel system and HPOP system. It did eventually smooth out and ran very smooth. Next day Sunday 01/15/2012: Limo was again parked inside, no block heater. Started limo only to have it misfire again until engine was up to operating temp....I also have noticed before the repair and after a very slight smell of diesel fuel. There is also no noticeable smoke. I am into this now to the tune of $1450.00 If you have any suggestions as to what the problem could be I would appreciate your comments. Other than replacing the remaining injectors (and thats going to be a crap shoot) I am at a loss as to what the problem could be. Bill Magas ​  

I wish you the best of luck. I know how aggravating it is as I'm in the same boat as you. Mine wont even crank if it hasnt been plugged up at any temperature 60F and under. I apologize that I cant give you any helpful knowledge, but I'll be following your thread to see if anyone can help you out of your problems. I'll post if I figure my problem out as it may be the same as yours.  

Welcome to TheDieselStop Did your guy also do a cylinder contribution test along with the injector buzz test? That's the one that really tells you what's up with the injectors (or the cylinders). It could be injector problems or base engine problems, such as low compression (although that's not that likely). The injectors can get gummed up from the oil changes not being kept up, and won't operate correctly when the oil is warm. It may be that you need to replace the remaining injectors (but you can get them rebuilt for less than you'd pay for rebuilt ones at Ford, especially if they just need the gunk cleaned out of the valving). You should be able to find a local shop where you are that does injectors. If your guy can do a contribution test for you, it would help. Or you can pull the valve covers off, start it up and observe the oil flow coming out of each injector. The ones that don't spit oil when cold are the ones you should concentrate on. Good luck  

We did not do a contribution test and I don't know why he (the guy from Ford) didn't. Would you do the test or is it safe to do the test while the engine is cold (roughly 60F or above)? Should I do it at multiple engine tempuratures? I had another person tell me to change the oil and that it may help. If the injectors are that sludged up from dirty oil, is there an additive (I hate to put additives my oil) that can be safely added to the oil to help de-sludge the injector valving? As I stated in my previous post the former owner of the truck did not take good care of it and I would be inclined to say that the oil change intervals were neglected. The last time I did an oil change it started up once (just once, the first time after re-filling the crank case with oil) perfectly fine with no misfire. I thought it was a fluke and just wrote it off as one. Maybe your on to something as far as the state of the oil condition. One further update: I plugged the truck in weds. night and started it 24 hours later on thurs. and it ran smooth. Whatever the problem it is definately sensative to temperature changes.  

I'd say two things are most likely: 1. glow plug system. You said you replaced the glowplugs themselves. How about your glow plug relay? The contact on the relay are getting bad because of the spark-over on closing or opening the contacts. The glow plugs are usually only on for a max of 120 seconds. So this is possible in your case. 2. If the truck as you mentioned did get neglected, most likely the oil changes weren't done as diligently as these trucks require. So problems with the injectors because of the history are a good possibility. You can start up the truck (cold) with a valve cover removed and see how much oil is getting spurted out of the injectors evenly. How long ago did you do the last oil change? How does the oil look like? Also, check in your fuel bowl for residue from bad fuel quality.  

I had someone tell me that "MotorKote" works good for injectors that are getting sticky. I put it into my oil on the last oil change but haven't noticed a difference. However, I haven't put a ton of miles on the truck since then either.

Tremor fanatic.

Mine does it as well just a consistent “rock” when Idling every 2 seconds or so it feels like a slight miss. I think the “big pushrod v-8” comment has a lot to do with it. My dads 460s both carb and fuel injected do the same thing just chugging at 600 rpm’s. I also think it may be connected to the timing and the computers trying to minimize fuel consumption at idle and every however many strokes it’s gotta dump in some extra fuel to pick it back up.

Anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket wires for remedying a fix for this. Mine does the same thing, after reading few these comments I feel better knowing I’m not the only one but if I could upgrade it to help smooth it out, wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

i don't have the 7.3 but i have worked on a bunch of other vehicles that had those metal heat shields and they always cause shorts. we usually pop them off and chuck em and the problem goes away ngk makes the fiberglas sleeves if you're worried about heat from the headers

7.3 Loping idle

I have a 04 7.3 f250 At cold start up it runs a bit rough for a few seconds then runs normal for a few minutes after that I lopes real bad. what can cause this? any help greatly appreciated  

If it is truly an 04 you have a 6.0 not a 7.3. Can you confirm the year or engine??

It is one that was built for Australia sticker on engine says 03 7.3lt  

Here in Australia I believe we had the 7.3 engine up to 2006 model after that ford no longer brought the F250 into the country. now they have to be imported and converted from left to right hand drive. I recently looked into the latest model and the cheapest here is $115,000 AU So I need to keep mine going for years to come.

A few things can cause this. Might start by just simply unplugging the ICP sensor and see if it changes how it runs. Do you have any kind of OBD scan tool device? They do seem to be rare in Aussie land.  

I had someone scan for codes, only code was turbo low boost. I will try unplugging the ICP after work. Thanx  

I gave up trying to find the problem myself. Took it to Ford dealer service, they have had it all day and still haven't found the cause. I asked them have they done a injector buzz test and contribution test. Buzz test was ok but failed contribution test on 4 cylinders ( not all in the one bank)  

Any one have suggestions I can ask ford service to check? I think there lost  

Still to today the Ford dealer I took it to cant tell me what's wrong. so far its cost me $186 to tow it there and $440 for there time to tell me nothing. so now I'm getting it towed from there to a diesel mechanic for another $186. hope the next mechanic can find the problem, Down about $800 Au and still no idea as to what's wrong. Totally Pissed off. Mechanics in Aus are hopeless on US trucks  

My recommendation would be stop taking it to shops. Get yourself a diagnostic tool. (Autoenginuity, torque, car gauge pro, etc, etc) and we can then likely walk you through fixing it. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk  

Thanx Jasper At the moment I'm running out time as I'm going to Thailand in 4 weeks for a month so I will give this new mechanic a few days to see what they come up with. I have ordered a scan tool and if no luck with mechanic I will take you up on your offer when I return from Thailand. Many Thanx David  

New mechanic rang me last Thursday, they think 3 injectors failing. They want to pull the three and test after they quote me the cost to fix if it is the injectors. Monday now and still waiting for a quote................Doing my head in

I know absolutely nothing about rebuilding a diesel injector. I'm thinking of picking the truck up and look into fixing it after my holiday. As for looking into buy injectors from America what is a good brand ( who makes the original ones in it) I don't really like the idea of after market unless they are as good or better  

I will have my truck towed back home tomorrow or the next day and wait until I return from my holiday to try and fix it. Hope you all can help me. Ford dealer tells me failed contribution test on 4 cylinders, report states every time they ran test was different cylinders failed. Cornell diesel systems tells there tests show Injector 3,4 and 5 bad. They want to pull and test 3,4&5 injector but before they do they want to quote me total price to fix if injectors need changing. In Aus injectors are $7215 Au a set plus labour to change? . If I agree to quote and they test ok they could still charge me to change because I wouldn't know if they were changed or not ( I don't trust mechanics here). Hopefully you guys can help me when I get back from holidays to diagnose problem and fix, I have bought an ELM 327 mini OBD11 Interface. Can you recommend the best app for android phone to help diagnose?

This might not help, but it's something that I saw on my 7.3. I had a similar symptom as you with multiple cylinders failing the CCT but different cylinders each time. I found that my end rail plugs were leaking and I was getting a big air bubble trapped in my high pressure oil rail. My symptoms were, random multiple failures during the CCT, and my HPOP reservoir was draining out after the truck was turned off. I found that 3 out of 4 of my end rail plugs were leaking and allowing the oil rail to partially drain down. Replacing the plugs took care of both of my symptoms as well as the hard starts and rough idle I was having at the time......  

I just got my truck back home should have tried what jasper recommended before I took it to mechanics. I unplugged the ICP and it runs normal ( guess its a bad ICP ) I hope. last mechanic wanted to changes injectors at a total cost of $13,000 Au. Thank god there is people like you guys willing to help. I would still like suggestions on best android app for OBD scan tool so I can clear any codes and diagnose any future problems.  

I know it's a little old but I use car gauge pro, which allows me to do diagnostic and self testing like cylinder contribution test and injector buzz test. Torque pro app allows you to monitor your values ie: eot, boost, hpop, icp, injpw, maf etc.... all for the cost of the bluetooth unit and 15usd from the google play store. I have a 97 f350. Do your research on how to properly set up the apps or you may not get them to work like some people experience.  

You are communicating with the ecu so you can only use one of them at a time and if you want to go to the other you must manually close out the app you are leaving and disconnect to be able to reconnect to the other one.

2001 Excursion 7.3 problems!

Ok so I just got this 7.3 Excursion with only 98K on it. Been using it around town for about a month with no issues until this week. I first noticed it when driving on the highway about 70mph and it started missing and losing power. Pulled over to the side of the road and it had a very rough idle. Turned it off and waited a little then it turn over and ran like nothing happened. About 10 mins later it was back. It did this for the whole day. Did some research and thought maybe it was the CPS. Changed it out with a FORD CPS and it ran great for a few days now its back, but worse. It will start out great then after about 20mins or so of drive time its acts up or when under heavy load. Last time it did it and I tried to pull the ICP plug to see if that may be the issue but no help at all.(yes there was some oil in the plug) Didn't change anything. Fuel filter looks good. I really don't want to bring it to the local stealership but I may not have a choice. NO CODES OR ANYTHING THING! Someone please help. Just tried it again and it runs fine no issues, but I dont want to get stuck again.

got any way to monitor fuel pressure? electric pumps can do strange things.  

check your cps(cam positioning sensor) I had the same issue. Pulled out the Ford new rev and installed a sensor I purchased from a local INTERNATIONAL dealer went away for good. Good luck! Ps I now keep a spare CPS in my glovebox.  

The UVC plugs can come loose under the VC..only way to check is pull the covers. ford has a kit that will keep this from happening again..
