Franz Ferdinand review – fierce fun from precision-drilled 00s survivors
O2 Victoria Warehouse, Manchester There is an enduring and endearing quality to Alex Kapranos and co, now 20 years in, their sound embedded in the UK’s psyche
“T ake it right down to the sweet Mancunian ground,” instructs Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos . Telling the audience to drop before rocketing them back up like a firework by restarting the music is an old trick, and one that can fall flat as often as it works. But the hefty crowd at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse dutifully obey and drop in unison. The band detonates via a stretched out and frenetic version of This Fire, and the crowd explodes along with them.
The moment feels emblematic of Franz Ferdinand as a whole, now 20 years into their career and touring a greatest hits record. Despite always operating in familiar territory, both musically and via tried and tested stage antics, there is an enduring, endearing quality to them that refuses to fade.
While many of the songs played tonight are still the same spiky, fervent, pop-laced guitar bursts they were knocking out nearly two decades ago – see the stomping riff of Do You Want To – the band also feel notably different. Aside from having retained only two out of four original members, their trajectory has seen them go from being disciples of Scottish indie lineage, turning countless teenage NME readers in the 2000s on to Orange Juice, Fire Engines and Yummy Fur, into a precision-drilled theatrical pop outfit.
Kapranos has always had a knack for working the stage but he fully embraces his inner showman tonight, knowingly hamming it up as he runs through the entirety of the rock star stage moves manual – at one point standing on top of an amp with his own name on it, guitar outstretched to the heavens. He possesses a slight cockiness but it always stays on the right side of charming. The band (Bob Hardy, Dino Bardot, Julian Corrie, Audrey Tait) are superb: locked-in, intuitive, fun, fierce. Always Ascending sees them dive into pure Talking Heads domain: zippy guitars bounce as vocal harmonies layer up and the pace accelerates, teetering close to frantic chaos but never descending into it.
after newsletter promotion
The band’s neat ability to blend art-pop, disco-rock, indie bangers and post-punk – peppered with references to the Soviet-era and dadaism – remains a unique one. With some corners of the internet trying to convince themselves that mid-2000s indie is some kind of en-vogue hot property once again, it does hit home how many of Franz Ferdinand’s one-time peers failed to find the same quality of output and longevity.
A song such as Take Me Out, which has become ubiquitous over the last two decades, should by all standards of rational thinking and logic sound profoundly irritating and dated in 2022. Instead, it shines – as crunchy as it is sharp, and driven by a riff so deeply embedded into the British psyche it appears to have transcended time itself.
Franz Ferdinand tour the UK until 15 November.

Review: Franz Ferdinand celebrate 20 years of hits at Manchester's Victoria Warehouse
Hits to the Head documents the very best of Franz Ferdinand's music since Take Me Out skyrocketed them to fame in the early noughties

Typically when an artist goes on tour, you’ll spend the first half an hour listening to newly released material that’s still very much growing on people, before getting into the good stuff. The hits. Noel Gallagher has joked about it before at High Flying Birds gigs, knowing the audience is really waiting for the Oasis tracks, saying: “Don’t worry, only a few more to get through, then it’s hit after hit.”
Lucky for Franz Ferdinand fans - Franz Ferdifans? - their latest album is a ‘best of’ compilation which documents their best loved and most popular tracks of the last two decades.
Hits to the Head came out in March this year, followed by the announcement of three special live shows for the Scottish rock band - the first of which would be held at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse.

In a statement, Alex Kapranos said: “I’ve always wanted to make a best of. They were such a big part of my life growing up. My parents didn’t have a huge record collection. They didn’t have every Bowie LP, they had Changes. The Red and Blue Beatles. Rolled Gold. For them, it was what they wanted to listen to. The best bits. The Hits.
“That’s the point of this record: the hits to the head, hits to the heart, hits to the feet as they hit the dancefloor.”
And so, on Wednesday night, I headed down to the Victoria Warehouse to hit the dancefloor myself.
Supporting, The Great Leslie and Los Bitchos got the crowd of around 3,000 people warmed up and ready for the Take Me Out performers. The median age was noticeably a little higher that some of the other gigs I’ve been to recently, without a single BeReal or Snapchat camera in sight.
Los Bitchos set was particularly fun. The outfit describe themselves as ‘four gals from the underground realms of London, tripping out on Tequila and Cumbia vibes.’ They play mostly instrumental music with inspiration of the 70s and 80s, and proved that October isn’t too early to play a Christmas song to a Manchester audience.
Franz Ferdinand made their way onto the stage playing the opening notes of The Dark of the Matinee behind a curtain screen and flashing lights which offered some stunning visual affects. And from the moment that curtain dropped, Kapranos and the band did exactly what they set out to do - deliver hit after hit.
Twenty years is a long time for a band to rack up a number of singles, albums, awards and what not. In fact, over the last two decades, Franz Ferdinand have sold over 10 million albums, received 1.2 billion streams to date, 14 platinum albums, won a Brit, Ivor Novello + Mercury Prize awards, Grammy nominations and sold six million tickets for their incendiary live show worldwide.
And a ‘best of’ tour doesn’t symbolise the end of Franz Ferdinand, either. It’s more a reflection for them too. Kapranos puts it like this: “For the artists, it was a retrospective. A way to understand the progression of ideas with the perspective of the long term. An indication of where the future may be taking them.”
They continued with No You Girls and the newly released Curious - one of only two brand new tracks to be woven into Hits to the Head. Why put new tracks on a hits album, you ask? Well, Curious and Billy Goodbye feel so distinctly Franz Ferdinand that listeners already feel as though they know them on the first play. And I suppose after 20 years, the band will have a good idea of what will land well with their audience.
The room was bouncing for floor-filler Do You Want To, followed by Lucid Dreams and The Fallen. With almost 20 tracks to get through in an hour and a half, there wasn’t much time for chit-chat, but plenty of time for working the audience, clambering atop of amps and providing a total rock and roll experience. It was one of the most slick and polished live performances I’ve enjoyed this side of the pandemic, and there’s just something about live music that people appreciate a lot more since 2020 these days.
The band went straight from Michael into Take Me Out, their second single which catapulted them into fame, putting the band firmly on the global map on time for their eponymous debut album which went on to sell nearly four million copies worldwide.
Kapranos added: “The first time we played Take Me Out in a rehearsal room, I made a joke and said ‘Oh, I can almost imagine that being played on the radio’. I meant maybe once by Lamacq or Peel. None of us presumed anyone would really care. Then the album came out and we were sucked into a dizzying vortex of fame, tossed across the planet, not really knowing where we were. Top Of The Pops, Glastonbury, Taratata, Reading, Letterman, Roskilde, Fuji Rock, Mercury, Grammys, Brits, all those magazine covers… it was overwhelming.”
The year it was released - 2004 - Franz Ferdinand played 382 gigs, broke up for three days ‘after a punchup backstage’ and of course, got back together.
Towards the end of Outsiders there was a blackout, which gave new drummer Audrey Tait just enough time to move away from her drum kit and take up centre stage with some snares. As the lights illuminated the stage once more, all five members of the band held drumsticks in their hands and let the track go out with a funky percussion finish.
Audrey, who played for Hector Bizerk, joined the Glaswegian outfit in 2021 after Paul Thomson decided to part ways with the band.
The band say Audrey is ‘the same, but different’ - she certainly brings something fresh and fun to Franz Ferdinand, and is a fantastic percussionist, something Outsiders really allowed her to show off.
The band headed off-stage before Kapranos returned and asked the audience if they’d like to hear another song, and the applause that filled the room signalled a resounding ‘yes, please’.
Billy Goodbye - the second of the new tracks - was followed up with Darts of Pleasure, with Franz Ferdinand bowing out to The Fire. While Robbie Williams was across the city ‘entertaining you’, Franz Ferdinand were getting ready to ‘burn this city’ with their fiery and electric set packed with every possible hit you could hope for, and that was extremely nostalgic.

Franz Ferdinand (formed in 2002) is a Scottish indie/alternative rock four-piece, led by frontman Alex Kapranos, hailing from Glasgow, Scotland.
Prior to forming Franz Ferdinand singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos played in the groups The Kareila and Yummy Fur, the latter alongside friend and percussionist Paul Thompson. Kapranos later taught his friend Bob Hardy how to play bass, and met co-guitarist Nick McCarthy soon afterwards, completing the band's lineup. Having initially practiced in McCarthy’s house, Franz Ferdinand soon found an abandoned warehouse, affectionately named the Chateau, where they could hone their skills. In early 2002 the band recorded a host of material that generated a significant amount of buzz, ultimately resulting in Franz Ferdinand signing with Domino Records in 2003.
The band’s debut label release “Darts of the Pleasure EP” was released in 2003, followed in early 2004 by the hit single “Take Me Out”. The single reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, introducing the band to an international audience. Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled debut album was released in February 2004 to critical acclaim and comparisons to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, and Blur. The album subsequently won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize, an Ivor Novello Award, and two BRIT Awards in 2005.
Franz Ferdinand’s sophomore album “You Could Have It So Much Better” was issued in October 2005 once again on Domino Records. The record proved popular again among critics and fans, with the album topping the UK Albums Chart, aided by the singles “Do You Want To”, “Walk Away”, “The Fallen / L.Wells”, and “Eleanor Put Your Boots On”. Choosing to team up with pop producer Dan Carey, Franz Ferdinand’s third album took the group in a more dance/pop direction. Released in early 2009, “Tonight” was led by the single “Ulysees”, and subsequently “No You Girls” and “Can’t Stop Feeling”. Following appearances at Glastonbury Festival, Coachella Festival and on Green Day’s 2009 tour, the band released the dub compilation album “Blood” in June 2009.
“Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action” appeared in 2013, charting at No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 24 on the Billboard 200. Recorded in Black Pudding Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, the album features producers Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, and Todd Terje. The album, like its predecessors found favour among critics and spawned the singles “Right Action”, “Love Illumination”, and “Evil Eye”.
Live reviews
Although the genre of post-punk isn't new, Franz Ferdinand was at the forefront of its revival during the mid-2000s in the United Kingdom.
Franz Ferdinand has a certain sound that anyone can pick up as soon as you hear one of their songs. Although their realm of music is saturated with artists all doing the same thing, you can always tell a Franz Ferdinand song as soon as you hear the first few notes, even before singer Alex Kapranos begins to sing.
This is evident in concert as well. In an outdoor festival in the daytime, they introduce themselves and immediately begin to play. As soon as the first two or three notes are played of a certain song, like "Take Me Out," the crowd begins to go crazy and starts cheering and jumping as the band gets past the song's introduction. Aside from the getting the audience pumped up with their music, Franz Ferdinand also has a classy stage presence.
All the members dress in dark colors, with Alex Kapranos wearing a button-down shirt. Behind them, a large screen projects images relating to the band. There isn't really much else going on visually, except maybe some lights for when it begins to get dark. The stage itself is huge, and is surrounded by crowds, of which some try and get close to band as they play. As Franz Ferdinand has become more popular, the crowds have become bigger.

If you are aiming to dance nonstop during all the gig, Franz Ferdinand is the best choice. For Brazilians, it's a big deal the fact that they come almost every year to perform in São Paulo, but I do believe it's good deal for us to keep my hometown always in their route. As for the gig, it was awesome! New hits from RIGHT WORDS, RIGHT THOUGHTS, RIGHT ACTIONS mixed with the best of their previous albums. I may dare to say that there was nothing out. A lot of music, less talking - that's how I like it. 21 songs well played. whenever the audience got a little bit tired of jumping and dancing, they brought up a hit to make us get into the beat again. "DO YOU WANT TO" was great and so it was "WALK AWAY". Of course "TAKE ME OUT" made everybody scream from the top of their lungs. and that drum jam was unbelievable!! Just amazing! When they came back for the encore, again new versus old hits just perfectly matching. Also they shown a little bit of love to São Paulo when they played "THIS FIRE", which made us leave the gig wanting them to come next year. I'll be there for sure!
For a rock act to make their audience dance throughout the whole gig is quite an impossible feat yet Scottish group Franz Ferdinand do not seem to have any issues in achieving this. Their entire discography is tinged with that pop/rock sound that means it just makes you want to move and the piercing percussion pulses through the room and gets the whole venue jumping along to the beat. There has always been theatrics involved with Franz's show and tonight is no exception as there are operatic introductions added to the likes of 'The Dark of the Matinée'.
There is also huge encouragement from lead singer Alex Kapranos who whips the masses into heightened enthusiasm for 'No You Girls' a modern indie classic which is barked back in force by the delighted fans. You cannot fault the boys attitude onstage as they tear through a varied set with equal enthusiasm, clearly holding all their albums in equal affection. The fans do have clear favourites for 'Ulysses' and 'Take Me Out' which make a perfect closer to a set from a band that is fast moving from talented to iconic.
Franz Ferdinand are the most amazing live band I've ever seen. I always have so much fun when I see them cause of how awesome their songs sound live and how much fun they have performing together on stage. Their frontman, Alex Kapranos, is absolutely fantastic! He's charismatic, sexy and has a voice that's like warm honey and he really engages with the audiance. They performed four new songs off the upcoming album(Paper Cages, Huck & Jim, Lazy Boy & Always Ascending) as well as hits and fan favs off their four previous albums. I can't recommend enough how enjoyable these guys are to see live. They are my fav band and the guys are all so sweet, (Alex Kapranos, Bob Hardy, Paul Thomson) as well as the new addition of Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot who are so sweet and awesome as well. I've known the boys personally for years now and it's always exciting knowing that I'm going to see them even after all these years and more then 16 gigs later they still manage to keep their shows fresh and exciting.
Last night was the 20th time I’ve seen this amazing band and I’m always floored by what an epically awesome live band they are! Last night was incredible! Alex was in top form prowling, dancing and reaching out to the crowd enticing us to interact with him. It was the perfect mix of classic Franz and songs off of the new album. One of the highlights was hearing the amazing Come On Home, off their debut album, for the first time last night in years! I couldn’t stop laughing and singing with joy right along with Alex. What a treat! I have no voice left but it’s a small price to pay for such an incredibly fun night! Looking forward to seeing them at The Observatory in Santa Ana Saturday.
Absolutely killer show. The front man, Alex, is absolutely one of the biggest reasons to see this show. His energy and sweet dance moves rock the crowd along with the fantastic instrumental work of the rest of the band. The crowd involvement and hype that they generate just kept building throughout the night. What a show! My only complaint was the weird opener they had for this show, Bodega, who seemed to be going for that alt-punk/hipster sound but came out just sounding loud and out of tune. Definitely not a band for this audience and I don't expect they'll be playing many shows.
Franz 10/10!
Love Franz Ferdinand more than any other band and know all the lyrics. I've been waiting for their concert in NYC for so many years, but I have to admit it was a disappointment. There's only one reason -- they played new album FFS created with Sparks. Basically this album is not like Franz Ferdinand rock music that I love so much. It's not bad, just different. So no moshing, no wilderness.. But we'll be waiting for another solo Franz Ferdinand concert in NYC,because Alex Kapranos is genius and we love his oeuvre, not somebody's else.
The band were exception and played a varied mix of their biggest tunes. The performance was stunning, created with enmense energy from the band and attractive lights and backdrops. The atmosphere was good except from the grumpy old man standing next to me who didn't so much as tap his foot to the music, however this was just unlucky and could not be affected by the band. The band interacted well with the audience and at the end of the gig the lead singer threw me his pick.
I wanted to like this show more than I did. Some of the FFS songs were okay, others were just too theatrical and didn't really work for me. It was like Rush and Yes had a secret 13 day love child (I'm looking at you Elijah Blue) and this band is that child, a child that watched Jesus Christ Superstar once too many apparently. I saw FF ten years ago and they rocked, tonight I was disappointed for 2/3's of the show.
The Franz Ferdinand & Sparks show was unique, something i was not expecting! The attitudes of both lead vocalists really drove the event the entire portion of the night. They ended their world tour here in Oakland, and it was quite the showcase to go out. All in all they did a few Sparks covers and a few Franz Ferdinand covers, but last night they were one band on stage!

Live review: Franz Ferdinand – Hits to the Head Tour
By Rebecca Rommen
Article Summary
Arguably Franz Ferdinand ’s most famous song, ‘Take Me Out’ is still a staple at indie clubs like 42s, 18 years after its release. The Glaswegian band’s discography has secured its place among a new generation of fans who’ve curated their music tastes around the indie rock and post-punk revival.
Franz Ferdinand tore up O2 Victoria Warehouse with their Hits to the Head Tour on October 19th. The tour is a nostalgic journey through their musical career. With 20 years of hits to their name, the quintet is on the fan service leg of their trajectory, taking the songs that propelled them to fame across Europe.
Supporting bands The Great Leslie and Los Bitchos warmed the crowd of 3,500 up. Both London-based bands, they brought alternative rock and 70s-inspired cumbia respectively. The latter band knew how to implement strong bass sounds, while the lead singer showed off their falsetto and vibrato, maintaining a dedicated hold on the high notes. The second band’s instrumental cumbia was a very different vibe to whom they were opening for, but it somehow worked.
A mesh curtain covered the stage leading up to Franz Ferdinand’s arrival. When they found their places and instruments on stage, the curtain was lifted alongside flashing lights after they played the opening notes of ‘The Dark of the Matinee’. The visual imagery of this reveal was electrifying, and the perfect opener for a night of classics.
Alex Kapranos ’ recognisable voice reverberated around the warehouse venue, sounding unchanged since the band’s inception in 2002. His stage presence was intoxicating as he made use of elevated platforms and proved he was still having fun on tour; none of that blasé attitude you see with some other performers who’ve toured for decades. The band’s live performance included satisfying harmonies, tasteful guitar solos, and isolated bass sections to break up packed choruses.
Franz Ferdinand’s setlist included their most popular songs, from ‘Take Me Out’ and ‘Do You Want Me’, to ‘No You Girls’, and ‘Walk Away’, much to the crowd’s delight. When ‘The Fallen’ was played, it took me back to my angsty teenage years. An oft-replayed part of my teenage dirtbag playlist, I’d forgotten how much the song used to mean to me until I saw it performed live. One verse in particular used to echo in the background of my subconscious:
“And the Kunst won’t talk to you /’Cause you kissed St Rollox adieu / ‘Cause you robbed a supermarket or two / Well, who gives a damn about the prophets of Tesco?”
At the time I was seriously considering moving to Glasgow and wanted those lyrics tattooed on my wrist; this was a band whose edgy verses spoke to my self-important, desperate-to-find-and-assert-myself adolescence. Did I even know what those lyrics meant? I probably just thought they sounded cool, and at that age, that’s all that mattered. I’d like to think that I’ve moved past that cringeworthy quest for individualism, but whether or not I have, I still love Franz Ferdinand, and finally seeing them live was a full-circle moment.

Franz Ferdinand announced their upcoming ‘best of’ collection by sharing a new single, ‘Billy Goodbye’, earlier this week. The album will also include another unheard track called ‘Curious’.
Speaking to NME in a recent interview , Alex Kapranos described the latter as “quite a different-sounding song” for the group. “Sonically, it’s more at the silky dance floor end of what the band is about,” he added.
Kapranos also spoke about the process of deciding on a tracklist for ‘Hits To The Head’, explaining that it was “like how you would choose the setlist at a festival”, mixing “bangers” with more “retrospective” moments.
News of Franz Ferdinand’s new compilation and the accompanying tour comes after the band parted ways with their original drummer , Paul Thomson.

“We’re glad we shared those adventures and experiences together and look forward to hearing what he gets up to next,” the group added. He has been replaced by Audrey Tait.
