Recreating the Music of Genesis from '76-'82 - The Phil Collins Years
'77 Wind & Wuthering Tour
Genesis' 1977 World Tour was in support of their epic album Wind & Wuthering released on December 23, 1976 in the UK and December 27, 1976 in the USA. The tour kicked off on January 1, 1977 at the Rainbow Theater in London and ended on July 3, 1977 at the Olympiahalle in Munich Germany. The tour had 97 shows and featured some firsts and lasts. This tour was the first tour to feature Chester Thompson behind the drum kit and if you were at that show on July 3rd in Munich Germany you saw the last show Steve Hackett ever played with Genesis. Wind & Wuthering is an album that features some of Genesis' most lush arrangements and cinematic songs. It is an album of incredible depth and power. The Genesis Show faithfully recreates the sounds of this incredible music and from this album and tour with stunning visuals as well as a few songs that even Genesis has never played live. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done once. Come experience this music live like you have never seen before with the The Genesis Show '77.

'81 Abacab Tour
Genesis' 1981 World Tour was in support of their album Abacab released on September 18, 1981, worldwide. The tour kicked off just a few days later on September 25, 1981, at LaMonumental, a bullfighting ring, in Barcelona Spain and ended on December 23, 1981, at The NEC Arena in Birmingham, England. The tour had 65 shows and 3 legs to the tour. The 1st leg was in Europe. The North American 2nd leg of the tour began on November 12, 1981, at The Dane County Coliseum in Madison Wisconsin and ended December 11, 1982, at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse NY. The 3rd leg of the Abacab Tour brought Genesis back to Europe for 7 dates in their home country of England starting on December 17th for a 3-night stint at Wembley Stadium. It was their first of many times playing Wembley Stadium. The finished up the tour with a 4-night stint at The NEC Arena. This was the first time Genesis opted to play the big arenas instead of all of the smaller venues they played in the UK on the '80 Duke tour. The Abacab Tour featured the return of Daryl Stuermer on guitar and Chester Thomson on the drums. By this time they had cemented themselves as permanent touring members. This tour was immortalized by the epic Three Sides Live album and Video which shows the band arguably at their peak as a live act. The setlist featured much of their new Abacab album but also showcased some of their classic fan favorites. The last night of the tour featured a first and a last. It would be the first time that Genesis played The Knife on the Abacab Tour but would also be the last time they ever played it live. The Knife closed the Abacab Tour. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done once or a few times. Come experience this music live as you have never seen before with The Genesis Show.

'82 Three Sides Live Encore Tour
Genesis' 1982 Encore Tour was in support of their iconic live album album Three Sides Live released on June 4, 1982, worldwide. The tour didn't kick off until August 1st, 1982 in Peoria Illinois an ran until September 30, 1982, finishing at the famous Hammersmith Oden in London England. The tour had 45 shows and 2 legs to the tour. The 1st leg was in the US and included the famous August 21st 1982 show at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia PA where they played in front of 58,000 screaming Genesis fans, their largest US crowd ever. The 2nd leg of the tour in Europe which began on September 3rd, 1982, at Charmilles Stadium in Geneva Switzerland. The Encore Tour again featured the return of Daryl Stuermer on guitar and Chester Thomson on the drums. The setlist was similar to the '81 Abacab Tour setlist but brought back some older fan favorites like Watcher Of The Skies and the epic Supper's Ready, played in it's entirety for the last time on this tour. Subsequent tours only featured fragments of the song. It should be noted that be noted that Peter Gabriel reunited with Genesis for one show in Milton Keynes billed as Six Of The Best on October 2nd 1982. Steve Hackett also made a guest appearance on 2 songs that evening. This show could technically be looked at as the last show of the Encore Tour but it featured a completely different setlist centered around the Gabriel era material. Here are the songs that were featured on this tour, not counting the Six Of The Best show. Not every song was done every night and some songs were only done a few times. Come experience this music live as you have never seen before with The Genesis Show.

In the 1970s, the annual Knebworth festival was something of a British institution.
Published on
In the 1970s, the annual Knebworth festival was something of a British institution, regularly attracting in excess of 100,000 people to the grounds of this Hertfordshire stately home to see some of the best bands in the world. The year 1978 was no exception and was billed as “A Midsummer Nights Dream.” Tickets were £5.50 in advance (roughly $8.50), which equates to around £45 today ($75). Following in the steps of The Rolling Stones , Pink Floyd, and the Allman Brothers Band , the headliner was Genesis – in the decade or so after this gig Led Zeppelin, The Beach Boys , and Deep Purple all played this iconic event.
Around 80,000 fans turned up on Saturday, June 24, and the first band on was Brand X who had counted Phil Collins in their lineup until the previous year. Their jazz fusion was just the right kind of music to open up the day, although to be fair many people would have been hard-pressed to tell if it was good jazz or not. They were followed by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, the one-time studio band from Doraville, Georgia whose album, Champagne Jam had been released in the spring of 1978. (They were holding down a top 10 spot on the Billboard chart with their single, “Imaginary Lover.”) Their soulful Southern rock was the perfect music to be carried along on the summer breeze.
Devo was an interesting band to put on the Knebworth bill, especially as their debut record, Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! was not due for release for another month. Most people just failed to get what they were trying to do, despite their having charted a couple of singles on Stiff Records, including a cover of the Stones , “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Sad to say they were not the ideal band for a sunny afternoon in Knebworth; a criticism that could not be leveled at Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers . Theirs was perfect music for the festival crowd. “American Girl,” “Breakdown,” and “Fooled Again (I Don’t Like It),” was just what the audience demanded. By the time they got to “ I Need to Know,” taken from their new album, You’re Gonna Get It , there were few in the audience that were still sitting down.
‘Interview’: How Gentle Giant Gave The Finger To Punk
The 13 best rock band trios ever, ‘three friends’: behind gentle giant’s first ever concept album.
Jefferson Starship’s pedigree was unquestionable, as Jefferson Airplane they had played Woodstock, but at Knebworth, there was one missing, vital, ingredient. Vocalist Grace Slick, an icon to many, had left the tour and while the band claimed she was unwell, Slick was telling anyone that would listen that she had quit and was already back home in America. It left the Paul Kantner-led band with an uphill struggle. It proved to be a rambling set that certainly had some high spots with numbers from both the Starship and the Airplane back catalogue including the towering “Wooden Ships.” David Freiberg, late of Quicksilver Messenger Service was now in the band (he and Kantner are still touring Starship today) and he did the old QMS song, “Pride of Man.” For many, the highlight of the entire set was Craig Chaquico’s soaring guitar on “Ride The Tiger.”
Prior to Genesis , there was a brief musical interlude from Festival stalwart Roy Harper who did one of his typical sandwich sets while the stage was reset. It was getting dark as Genesis took the stage and their arrival was in keeping with their bill-topping status. Smoke, a huge battery of colored lights, and mirrors suspended above the band that made it appear, at times, like the whole band was it by an impossibly bright, white, light; it all helped to create a stunning effect on a stage that at the time was the largest ever built for an outdoor festival in the UK.
Genesis at this point was reduced to the three core members of Phil Collins , Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, and they had just released their album, And Then There Were Three . Much of their set was similar to the live album, Seconds Out , released the previous year with the addition of new tunes from their latest album. From their new album there was “The Lady Lies,” “Burning Rope,” and “Deep In The Motherlode,” and by the time their set ended with “Los Endos,” it was a fitting climax to a day of varied and wonderful music.

I don’t know how often they played The Lady Lies but it is one of my top Genesis songs. It’s literally also the last song before they started going down hill (for me) with Follow you, Follow me.

what a great day that was other than Devo who got booed off stage and pelted with bottles etc. Roy Harper was great sitting on stage with his acoustic and sing one of those days in England, best thing he ever did. Genesis were also great I think they did I know what I like as the encore. This year sonisphere with Metallica Iron Maiden and The prodigy. all good bands but I love PROG

My very first gig at the age of 16, still have good memories, although unlike a lot of people I did like DEVO. I recently got a ticket to see Steve Hackett at the Apollo Hammersmith wondering if he would do some Genesis songs, to my delight he and his talented band of musicians did about two and a half hours of just Genesis in there prime recreating the unique genesis sound perfectly aaaaahhhh.
