Snorkel to Adventure (3 Days)
This tour was excellent. The skipper and crew worked seamlessly through some rough weather to ensure we had the best opportunity to view the reef with comfortable, clean, and safe accomodations onboard. Exceeded all of my expectations, particularly the chance to discover dive with Christine and the delicious food prepared by Zoe and Joost, who also kept us entertained with his fantastic music selection between dives. Good vibes from everyone working with us really made the trip special!
Oz East Coast Adventure 28 Days
Amazing 4 weeks in Oz! The organization of the hostel check-ins and the Greyhound rides were very good. Shannon was the most lovely tour leader and always ready to help with everything, which made the trip even better. Also the time we spent in each place felt just right. Only thing I would change about the itinerary are a bit more activities and less full free days. But overall it was a great experience!

15 Day Dingo Adventure Tour: Brisbane > Cairns
I loved my tour with Kayla because she doesn’t make it feel like a tour guide-tourist relationship but more of a friendship! She was always down to have a good time and put her passengers first. Her knowledge about the areas were travelling in was also fab.

Best of the Coast - Sydney to Cairns 16 Day Flashpacker Adventure Tour
I actually only did the Brisbane to cairns portion of this tour, but had others in our group who completed the entire thing. They pack so much fun times into for my group only a week, but I never felt rushed at any of the locations. They always gave us ample time to see everything and enjoy the sites. From Fraser Island, to the Whitsundays, the Atherton Tablelands, and a day on the Great Barrier Reef. As a small group tour your able to get close knit with everyone and meet many people from all around the world. Our tour guide Justin was amazing, so informative, full of energy, and one of the best tour guides making sure everyone had the best time. I’m fact one day we were supposed to be having a long driving day, and our bus broke, we waited at the hotel for some time, but Justin problem solved until he was able to find us another form of transportation. The included meals were great, and the locations Justin picked to give us as an option for dinners on our first night somewhere was always great food. I would highly recommend Via Travel to anyone, especially if you get Justin as a guide.

Great Barrier Reef Tours & Vacations
The Great Barrier Reef needs no introduction
It's one of the world's seven natural wonders. It's home to over 1,600 types of fish, 30 species of whale and dolphin, and 215 varieties of birds. And it's the planet's largest coral reef system . In fact, it's so big that astronauts have seen it from space. After dry land adventures along Queensland 's East Coast , hit the water with professional marine biologists to explore this fascinating underwater world. Look out for clownfish peeking out of anemones, inquisitive Maori wrasse gliding below or turtles munching on seagrass.

Great Barrier Reef travel FAQs
Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
How to get to the Great Barrier Reef
Most of our East Coast trips begin in Sydney, Cairns or Brisbane. Some of the most popular launching pads for the Great Barrier Reef are Airlie Beach , Townsville and Port Douglas .
These destinations are all serviced by commercial airlines. It's also possible to drive to one of the towns near the Great Barrier Reef and access the wonders of the underwater world on a small group tour.
How do I get around the Great Barrier Reef?
If you plan on visiting the reef on a day trip, try to allow at least two days to visit the Great Barrier Reef. This will give you some flexibility if the weather isn’t good on the day you originally planned to visit the reef. The other option is to join a Whitsunday Islands Explorer tour and spend several days on a live-aboard yacht exploring the Great Barrier Reef. The waters of the Great Barrier Reef get warmer the further north you go.
When is the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef?
There are only two seasons along the reef – the dry season (winter) from May to October and the wet season (summer) from November to April. The temperatures are fairly consistent throughout the year with average highs of 86°F and lows of 69.8°F.
May through October is considered to be the best time to experience the reef as rainfall is low and water visibility is high. You may also see whales during their annual migration from the Antarctic.
If you're visiting between October and May, it's advisable to wear a stinger suit to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.
What do I pack for the Great Barrier Reef?
The Great Barrier Reef tends to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. Even if you're staying at a high-end resort, smart casual clothes are all you will need. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter, as the sun reflects off the water and white sand. Bring essentials such as basic medications with you won't find any shops when you're out exploring the reef.
What is the internet access like on the Great Barrier Reef?
In short, pretty much non-existent unless you're near one of the major tourist hubs such as Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays or on the mainland at a town like Airlie Beach.
Is there cell phone coverage on the Great Barrier Reef?
Unless you're near one of the major tourist spots, it's unlikely you will be able to get a cell phone signal.
Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?
We are committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.
We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Great Barrier Island is a large island with a small population. The forests, beaches and bays provide scope for all kinds of wilderness adventures.
The island is entirely off-grid relying on renewable solar power and collection of freshwater. With a population of around 1000 people, the locals are sure to welcome you to their vibrant, self-sufficient community.
West Coast, Great Barrier Island, New Zealand
Great Barrier Island is the largest and most seaward of the Hauraki Gulf islands in the Auckland region. For thousands of years, it has sheltered Auckland's harbour from the relentless swells of the Pacific Ocean, creating a boating paradise.
The 90 kilometre journey from Auckland city takes about 4.5 hours by fast ferry or you can catch a 30-minute flight with Barrier Air to the remote location. It is recommended visitors stay overnight at least one night, especially if stargazing.
The eastern shore of Great Barrier Island faces the ocean with high cliffs and long white surf beaches; the western side offers deep sheltered harbours and calm sandy bays.
More than 60 percent of Great barrier Island's 285 square kilometres is public land administered by the Department of Conservation. The native forest is laced with beautiful walking tracks, which lead to secluded natural hot springs and a historic Kauri dam. These wilderness areas, foreshores, and estuaries are home to several unique plant and bird species. Rising 627 metres above the sea, Hirakimata (Mount Hobson) beckons the hiker with the promise of incredible 360-degree views.

It is best to pre-arrange transport before your arrival.
Great Barrier Island is a popular destination for diving, fishing, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, camping and stargazing. Accommodation options range from tent sites to luxury eco-lodges.
Tryphena is the largest settlement on the island and is situated on the west coast. Home to a number of picturesque family-friendly beaches, dolphins are often spotted here close to the shoreline.
A number of events are held on Great Barrier Island every year, including the delicious FitzRoy Mussel Fest, which celebrates the mouth-watering mussels the area is known for. There's also 'wharf2wharf', a marathon-length sporting event where athletes walk, run or cycle across the island, and the Great Barrier garden tour (opens in new window) , which showcases the island's stunning residential gardens.
Other settlements include Whangaparapara and Tryphena (western side)and Claris (eastern side).
Enjoy the island's emerging dining culture and sample fresh locally produced Mānuka honey, beer and gin. Indulge in natural, homemade skincare products made by locals.

While moorings change depending on the conditions, tours usually visit one of the Outer Great Barrier Reef spots (Saxon Reef or Norman Reef) in the morning before continuing to North Hastings Reef in the afternoon, with a freshly-cooked lunch in the middle.
The tour lasts approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes and departs from Cairns at 7am. $165 AUD includes a glass of wine, use of all equipment, a buffet BBQ lunch, and 5 hours of reef time. Optional extras, such as a helicopter flight, are available at an extra cost.
3 – Premium Reef and Coral Cay Cruise at High Speed from Cairns

Once there, explore the waters to your heart’s content or simply kick back on the untouched, postcard-worthy beach. Next stop: the equally impressive Hastings Reef, sitting on the very outer edge on the Great Barrier Reef.

4 – Cairns: Green Island & Reef Full-Day Sailing Cruise
The smallest boat so far – a classic 16-meter sailing vessel – welcomes a maximum of 25 exclusive guests, meaning that you’ll have more one-on-one time with the informative marine biologist and won’t have to fight your way through hoards of tourists to cash in on the smorgasbord lunch. In addition to the ample diving and snorkeling opportunities, visitors have plenty of time to chill on the beautiful Green Island.
The tour lasts about 9 hours and typically leaves the Cairns dock at 8am. $215 per person includes top-quality snorkeling gear, wetsuits, a glass of wine, a tropical afternoon tea, and snorkeling tours – with the optional add-on for scuba diving.
Cancellation is available up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund (trust us though, this unforgettable experience is not one that you want to pass up).

If you’re all about high-class luxury and prefer having more room to move, then the 65-foot (20-meter) catamaran presents as an excellent option. A maximum of 75 people will set sail from Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal to Upolu Cay. From there, visitors climb aboard a glass-bottom boat – have your camera at the ready, because the marine life swimming underneath is guaranteed to amaze.
Swimming zone number two is a marine hotspot known as the Wonder Wall, which descends a whopping 14 meters below the surface and is teeming with coral and wildlife.
The tour lasts 9 hours, departing from Cairns at 7:15am. Upwards of $213.50 includes a tantalizing buffet lunch with seafood, professional snorkeling equipment, ongoing crew assistance, refreshments throughout the day, and showers on board.
6 – Great Barrier Reef Scenic Helicopter Tour and Cruise from Cairns
Seeing the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef from on or below the surface is incredible. Seeing it from a birds-eye view as you whip through the skies in a helicopter provides a whole new jealousy-inducing perspective. You’ll still be blessed with the opportunity to swim, snorkel, and/or scuba – the helicopter is simply the means of transport.
Three options are available to choose from:
- Fly to the reef, snorkel and explore, and then fly back to Cairns.
- Boat to the reef, snorkel and explore, and then fly back to Cairns.
- Fly to the reef, snorkel and explore, and then boat back to Cairns.
Option 1 and option 2 commence at 12:40pm while option 3 departs at 7:30am.
Starting at $405, these packages include at least one overhead helicopter flight; a freshly-made BBQ lunch featuring fresh fish, sausages, steak, salads, and pasta; snorkeling equipment; and free refunds up until 24 hours before departure.
Note that scuba diving within 48 hours of flying is not recommended and hotel pickup is not included (although Cairns is a small city with plenty of parking, so making your own way to the departure point shouldn’t be a hassle).
7 – 2-Day Best of Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef
Cairns is renowned for being home to the largest coral reef system on Earth. But the Tropical North Queensland city has another trick up its sleeve: it’s the gateway to some of the oldest and most beautiful tropical rainforests on the planet. This tour combines the best of both worlds, tackling the rainforest-based Kuranda Village on day one and the reef on day two.
Kuranda village sits in the tropical mountains northwest of Cairns – you’ll see the village and its surroundings first-hand with rides on both the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This portion of the two-day tour provides an insight into Aboriginal culture and gets you up close and personal with land-based Aussie wildlife (did someone say koalas?).
$614 includes hotel pickup and drop-off (from Cairns only), a 25-minute one-way helicopter tour from the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns, professional guides, lunch, and the Great Barrier Reef Cruise.
8 – Green Island Reef Catamaran Cruise from Cairns
For those who want to experience all the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef but don’t want to splurge on unnecessary bells and whistles, this tour aught to do the trick.
Starting at just $99, this option entices the budget-savvy traveler while still offering ample time to snorkel through the colorful coral gardens off the coast of Green Island and surround yourself with spectacular fish.
Full-day tours offer time to laze on a sandy beach, while half-day tours suit those pressed for time. Depending on which you choose, you’ll set sail in either the modern catamaran, ‘Reef Rocket’; or a larger, air-conditioned 35-meter catamaran.
9 – Cairns: Outer Great Barrier Reef Full-Day Tour & Live Music
Five hours of snorkeling at two exclusive mooring locations is the perfect way to check out this globally-adored slice of Mother Nature. What sets this tour apart from the others is the live music, performed by an Aussie artist on the return leg of the journey.
The vessel departs at 8:15am and typically returns at around 4:30pm. $165 per person includes a gourmet BBQ lunch, snorkeling equipment with an optional guided lesson from one of the staff members, afternoon tea, a glass of wine, and a fruit and cheese platter.
Plenty of optional extras are available for purchase too, such as photos, helicopter tours, and diving.
10 – Outer Great Barrier Reef Cruise Including Scenic Heli Flight
On ‘Evolution’, one of the fastest and largest commercial catamarans that services the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll venture across the pristine waters to two spectacular swimming destinations in the Outer Reef.
Sunbathe on the deck or relax in the air-conditioned lounges – either way, you’re in for a treat. With room for 150 passengers on the boat, this option is perfect for the socialites.
$368 grants you access to a 10-minute Scenic Helicopter Flight to and from the exclusive Heli-Pontoon on the Outer Reef, in addition to all of the features and amenities listed in the aforementioned number 9 on this list.
11 – Barrier Reef Snorkeling with Helicopter, Cruise or Both
If you’re itching to take in the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef from all possible angles, then look no further. This tour kicks off with a scenic flight from Cairns over the Reef and the sand cays. Thereafter, you’ll be given 1.5 hours to spend swimming or snorkeling in the wildlife haven that is Hastings Reef.
- Cruise to the reef, snorkel and explore, and then fly back to Cairns.
- Fly to the reef, snorkel and explore, and then cruise by boat back to Cairns.
You’ll receive all this, plus a classic Aussie BBQ lunch, snorkeling gear, and a complimentary glass of wine for $399 per person. Cancel up to 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund.
12 – 2-Day Reef and Rainforest Package Combo: Green Island Cruise and Kuranda Day Trip
Want to see everything that Cairns has to offer on land and sea, and still be able to sleep in your own bed? Look no further. With hotel pickup and drop-off on both days, this hassle-free tour takes you on an adventure through the reef (with a cruise to Green Island) and through the rainforest (with a visit to the rainforest village of Kuranda).
The activity is advertised to have a maximum of 9 travelers, so you won’t feel forced to socialize. Have the camera at the ready because you’ll be gawking at the views from the Kuranda Scenic Rail, hanging out with koalas, and snapping selfies with turtles.
Trips start at $394 AUD and include a coral viewing tour in a semi-submarine at no extra charge. Note: unlike some alternatives, this option is final-sale and incurs a 100% cancellation penalty.
13 – Ultimate Great Barrier Reef Cruise with Marine World Pontoon
A high-speed catamaran guarantees a smooth ride out to the Outer Reef, where the magic of the Great Barrier Reef truly shines through. Once anchored, you’ll have access to a wide range of free onboard activities including a semi-submersible tour, viewings from a glass-bottom boat, and the ‘underwater reef viewing observatory’. Or, join a marine biologist from the multilingual crew on a guided snorkel safari!
Prices start at $239 per person, tours last for approximately 8 hours, and you’ll depart from the Cairns dock at 8:30am. Refreshments are available all day, highlighted by a delicious chef-prepared buffet lunch.
14 – Cairns: Snorkel & Dive a Secluded Great Barrier Reef Island
Can’t stand crowds? Does the thought of a selfie stick make you want to hurl? Then this tour is perfect – it’s secluded, small, and far away from the hoards of potentially-obnoxious tourists.
The tour starts with a relaxing 30-minute cruise down the colorful Mulgrave River – keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles! You’ll arrive at the untouched paradise that is Frankland Islands National Park, an area less popular but also less affected by coral bleaching than most Great Barrier Reef destinations.
A maximum of 30 visitors are permitted on the island daily, so make sure to book in advance. Tours start at $99 per person and included a prepackaged lunch, snorkeling equipment, and morning and afternoon tea
15 – Reef and Rainforest Tandem Sky Dive in Cairns

7 of the best day trips on the Great Barrier Reef
A visit to the Great Barrier Reef can be an emotional and unforgettable experience. Whether you fly over it, cruise on top of it or dive or snorkel one of its many famed sites, the size and beauty of this natural wonder will stay with you forever.
By Malcolm Chenu
Described by Sir David Attenborough as the most beautiful thing he has ever seen, the Great Barrier Reef is a marine miracle. The 2,300 kilometre (1,430 mile) living coral masterpiece runs down the north-east coast of Australia and is teeming with diverse marine life, including reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles and countless colourful fish. There are many ways to experience this natural wonder, and tours depart from towns and cities all along the Great Barrier Reef coastline. Here are our favourite day trips.
Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef
Heart Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Saltywings
Where: tours depart from Whitsunday Airport, Airlie Beach, Queensland.
Whitehaven Beach is a seven-kilometre (4.3-mile) stretch of pure white silica sand, with Hill Inlet at one end. Tourists come from all over the world to marvel at its beauty. It's in the same area as the Great Barrier Reef's Heart Reef, a beautiful coral arrangement in the shape of a heart. You'll see them both on a half-day adventure with Air Whitsunday . You'll take off in a seaplane from Airlie Beach , soaring over the Whitsunday Islands and circling over Heart Reef for photos before landing on the water at a nearby coral lagoon. Here you will jump from the plane into the water and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef before taking off again and flying to picturesque Whitehaven Beach for a champagne lunch. After lunch you'll be returned to your accommodation.
Yongala Shipwreck
SS. Yongala shipwreck, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Tourism and Events Queensland/Scuba Diver Life
Due to its currents, Yongala shipwreck is considered an advanced diving site and is best suited to SSI- and PADI-qualified divers.
Where: tours depart from Townsville, Magnetic Island or Alva Beach, Queensland.
Regarded as one the best dive sites in the world, the wreck of the SS Yongala sits on the sandy ocean floor 28 metres (92 feet) below the surface. It's in an area of the reef off the coast of Townsville , a tropical city south of Cairns . The 110-metre (360-foot) ship sank in 1911 and is now home to turtles, giant trevally, groupers, manta rays, sharks and thousands of tropical fish. You can take a day tour with Adrenalin Dive from Townsville or Magnetic Island, a popular local holiday destination just off the Townsville coast. Alternatively, Yongala Dive departs from Alva Beach, located a 15-minute drive from the town of Ayr.
Where: tours depart from Port Douglas, Queensland.
The Low Isles near the beachside town of Port Douglas is one of the most sheltered snorkelling destinations on the Great Barrier Reef. Boat tours depart for the Low Isles daily from Port Douglas (a lovely beach town about a one-hour drive north of Cairns) with several tour operators, including Calypso Reef Cruises , Sailaway Port Douglas and Wavedancer . You’ll receive a full safety briefing and all the equipment you need (including floatation devices) on the 75-minute journey to the islands. The snorkelling area is very safe and much of it is in shallow water. Look for sea turtles on or near seagrass. Lunch is provided and you can even hire an underwater camera.
Turtles, Mon Repos Conservation Park, Mon Repos, Queensland © Tourism Australia
Where: tours depart from Bundaberg, Southern Great Barrier Reef region, Queensland.
Each summer from November to January, nesting sea turtles, including endangered loggerhead turtles, come ashore at night to lay their eggs at Mon Repos beach in the city of Bundaberg (just over a four-hour drive or a one-hour flight north of Brisbane ). Then, between January and March, the hatchlings leave their nests and race down to the sea. Both spectacles can be witnessed in intimate nighttime tours on the beach. Tours are accompanied by an environmental scientist who offers insights into the fascinating life cycle of these gentle creatures.
Dwarf minke whales
Where: tours depart from Cairns and Port Douglas, Queensland.
Dwarf minke whales visit the Great Barrier Reef every year, and you can swim with them in June and July on tours that operate from Port Douglas and Cairns. When the whales are spotted, you'll jump into the water, hold onto a surface rope and simply wait for them to approach. These friendly, curious creatures almost always do. Day trip operators include Mike Ball Dive Expeditions and Silverseries .
Lady Elliot Island
Green sea turtle, Lady Elliot Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Tourism & Events Queensland
Where: flights depart from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay, Queensland.
Just off the coast of Bundaberg you'll find Lady Elliot Island , a 42-hectare (103-acre) coral cay that sits on the southern stretches of the Great Barrier Reef. This is the closest Great Barrier Reef island to Brisbane and can be reached via an 80-minute flight aboard Seair Pacific . Once you've arrived on the island, which is renowned for its high-visibility water, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. You can snorkel right off its beach with huge manta rays that can have a "wing span" of up to seven metres (23 feet) or enrol in a diving course at the PADI Dive Shop. Stay overnight in the 41-room Eco Resort , tariffs include buffet dinner and breakfast in the beachfront dining room.
Guide to the Southern Great Barrier Reef
Vlasoff Cay
Vlasoff Cay, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland © Tourism Tropical North Queensland
Where: tours depart from Cairns, Queensland.
Enjoy a deserted island on the Great Barrier Reef all to yourself when you take a day tour to Vlasoff Cay. Taking off from Cairns, your helicopter pilot will fly over the Great Barrier Reef before landing at the sandy islet with snorkels, flippers and a gourmet picnic for you to enjoy. The serene setting is yours for the next 90 minutes to wander, beachcomb, or dive in the warm water for a swim or a snorkel, before the return flight back over the reef to Cairns.

5 of the Best Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling Tours
The purest way to see The Great Barrier Reef is to find a well-organised snorkelling trip, take a deep breath and get up close and personal with one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
(Photo: getyourguide.com)
For anyone with an ounce of travelling spirit in their blood, The Great barrier Reef has to be on the destination bucket list somewhere. Spanning over 2,4000km down Australia’s eastern coastline, this collection of coral formations, turtles, whales and 1,600 species of fish, as well as even the Southern Hemisphere’s only submerged art gallery, is fascinating, fragile and unforgettable. It can be tempting to buy some cheap goggles and budgie smugglers from the dollar store and try to check it out yourself, but one of the purest (and best value for money) ways of seeing the reef is on a well-organised snorkelling tour. Here are the best snorkelling tours to get the most out of The Great Barrier Reef:
Outer Barrier Reef Snorkel Cruise & Transfer
Undoubtedly one of the best snorkelling trips out there, this 7.5 hour tour takes in three different reef sites at the pristine Opal or Agincourt Reefs in one day. Good quality gear is all part of the package, including prescription diving masks, wetsuits and flotation devices if needed, and in-between dives tea, coffee and a buffet is provided. The whole idea is to get even beginners acquainted with the reef and its diverse inhabitants – don’t be surprised to see clownfish, giant clams, stingrays, Maori wrasse, codfishes, and colorful parrotfish as you navigate the reef. It’s extremely well organised, with briefings and information throughout the day, the only issue for the more cash-strapped backpacker is probably the price – almost 200 bucks buys a lot of instant noodles at the hostel. From € 174.49.
Book at Getyourguide
Cape Tribulation Ocean Safari Tour
For something a bit more wallet friendly this ocean safari from Cape Tribulation packs a lot into half a day. There are only two dive sites as part of the tour, found at Mackay Reef, but it’s still a lot of reef exploring and for some will be enough considering the cost saving over a full day. There is an eco slant so the skipper will be explaining about conservation of The Great Barrier Reef and the coastal rainforest of the Daintree – two world heritage areas side by side. Good value and a perfect toe-in for discovering the reef. The 700hp vessel, based on a rescue craft, is a lot of fun too. From € 111.10.
Sunlover Reef Cruises Cairns Great Barrier Reef Experience
This tour is a little bit different in that the destination is the Moore Reef Pontoon on the Outer Great Barrier Reef, which is not only surrounded by fish but even has a water slide. OK, so maybe this isn’t the one to take the marine biology society for the annual get-together but it is very good for people who either don’t want to be on a boat all day, or just want to have a bit of extra fun. The air-conditioned catamaran that heads there has a glass bottom for observing the marine life, there’s an enclosed ocean pool and sundeck on the pontoon, and all sorts of other goodies aimed at families with children with a short attention span (ie all of them). You can also add on a certified diving, Seawalker Helmet dive, guided snorkel safari or even a scenic helicopter flight. From €162.81.
Book at Viator
Great Barrier Reef Cruise by Premium Catamaran
Boujee and budget don’t normally end up in the same sentence, but this nine-hour catamaran tour seems to nail both. It’s less than 150 bucks but one of the most pleasant ways to see the reef, setting sail, rather than chugging away with a motor, for the outer Barrier Reef. An onboard marine expert will explain the underwater eco-system and an experienced crew will run through snorkeling techniques during the journey. Then all you have to do is to sunbathe or chill on the upper sun deck or the netted deck trampoline at the bow of the boat, before heading to either Flynn and Milne reef or further north at Norman and Hastings reefs. There’s even a fresh tropical buffet lunch prepared onboard. Pretensions of being a millionaire optional. From € 144.91.
Whitsundays: Ocean Rafting Fly Raft Tour with Snorkeling
You’re probably thinking: this is all well and good, but where’s my aeroplane ride and bushwalk to go with the snorkelling trip? This tour has you covered. It kicks off with a 60-minute scenic flight in a light aircraft flight over many of the 74 Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, including famous Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach. The following a high-adrenaline speed boat ride (did we mention that bit?) there is a bushwalk for withering travellers to Hill Inlet Lookout at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. It culminates with snorkelling for over an hour at Border Island, Dumbell Island or one of the guide’s secret snorkel spots. From € 284.98.

Complete Guide to the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral system, stretching for 1500 miles along Australia's northeast coast. It's a bucket list destination for snorkeling and scuba diving, dotted with more than 900 white-sand islands where you'll find the country's best beach resorts.
Due to the tropical climate in Far North Queensland, it is essential to consider the weather when planning your visit to the Great Barrier Reef. Most travelers incorporate the Reef into a larger itinerary across Queensland and New South Wales, flying in and out of Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns.
In this guide, we break down everything you need to know for your trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
About the Great Barrier Reef
More than 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups have traditional connections to the Great Barrier Reef. The Yidinji clan, for example, believe that the reef was created by Bhiral, the Creator, throwing lava and hot rocks down from sky. Many of the islands hold special significance for different First Nations groups.
The Great Barrier Reef is considered to be one of the seven wonders of the natural world and received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1981. This incredible environment is home to more than 1,500 species of fish, as well as sharks, rays, turtles, and marine mammals. Unfortunately, the warming of the ocean caused by climate change has resulted in severe bleaching of the coral reef over the past five years.
There are still plenty of beautiful spots where you can see colorful coral and a thriving marine ecosystem. To help preserve the reef for future generations, visitors should minimize their impact on the reef by following all advice from local authorities .
Best Time to Visit
The Great Barrier Reef (and the rest of Far North Queensland) experiences two seasons, the wet season from November to April and the dry season from May to October. Stinger season, when dangerous box jellyfish can be found along the coast, runs from around November to May.
For most people, the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is between June and October to avoid both the wet season and the box jellyfish. During the wet season, rain can impair underwater visibility on the reef, but the warm water temperatures are great for swimming. However, you may also see cheaper tour, flight, and accommodation prices during the wet season.
For more information, check out our full guide to the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef .
Getting There
The Great Barrier Reef is a three-hour flight (or a 26-hour drive) north of Sydney and can be visited from a couple of different departure points. Cairns has an international airport , while Hamilton Island , Proserpine (near Airlie Beach), and Townsville can be reached via domestic flights.
For both day trips and longer tours, you'll find regular departures from Cairns, Cape Tribulation, Port Douglas, and Townsville. There are ferry services between Cairns and Green Island and Fitzroy Island . If you're headed out to the Whitsundays, there are shuttles and transfers available from Proserpine Airport and Airlie Beach.
The Great Barrier Reef is all about the snorkeling and scuba diving, though there are options for those who'd rather keep dry too. Michaelmas Cay , just 90 minutes by boat from Cairns, is a popular spot for keen snorkelers, while Agincourt Reef off Port Douglas is an interesting and accessible dive site.
For budget travelers, a day trip may be the best option. Take the 45-minute ferry to Green Island for the best of sand and sea, with beaches for swimming and snorkeling just offshore and a crocodile park on the island.
Other things to do on the reef:
- Marvel at the wonders below the surface from a glass-bottom boat .
- Take a semi-submersible submarine tour .
- Experience coral spawing between October and December.
- See baby turtles hatching between January and March.
- Join Dreamtime Dive and Snorkel for an Indigenous cultural reef experience.
- Go for a hike on one of the island national parks, like Lizard Island or Fitzroy Island .
- Relax on Whitehaven Beach , an unspoilt stretch of impossibly white sand that regularly tops lists of the best beaches in Australia.
Multi-day tours are also available, visiting multiple dive and snorkel sites and offering accommodation onboard. For the ultimate luxury, charter a yacht to sail the Whitsundays, take a scenic flight over Heart Reef, or book in at a beachfront resort.
Where to Stay
When visiting the Great Barrier Reef, there are three main places to stay: the mainland, the Whitsundays, and the more isolated islands on the reef.
Cairns is the mainland tourist hub for the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest , where you'll find everything from hostels to apartments, Airbnbs and well-known hotel chains like the Hilton. Read our full guide to hotels in Cairns for more options.
Port Douglas, Mission Beach, and Airlie Beach are smaller towns that still have everything you will need, with a more relaxed atmosphere. Further south, you can also reach the Reef from the city of Townsville.
The Whitsundays , off the coast of Airlie Beach, are a group of 74 islands that offer a true resort experience. Accommodation here is spread over four main islands (Hamilton, Hayman, Long and Daydream Island) and is generally more upmarket than the mainland.
Further afield, islands like Bedarra (near Mission Beach), Lizard (north of Cooktown), Haggerstone (in the far north), Orpheus (north of Townsville) offer secluded escapes.
Travel Tips
The Great Barrier Reef is a unique destination, so there are a couple of things to keep in mind to ensure you make the most of your trip without damaging this precious natural resource.
- Book accommodation at least a month in advance if you're traveling during peak season (June to October).
- Plan to spend at least a couple of days exploring the reef, or up to a week to cover all the highlights.
- Some people experience seasickness during boat tours on the Great Barrier Reef. If you know you're prone to motion sickness, you can buy medication over the counter at any pharmacy in Australia.
- Choose reef-safe (mineral-based) sunscreen , or use a physical barrier like a hat and a rash guard or swim shirt to prevent sunburn.
- If you visit between November and May, wear a stinger suit or swim at patrolled beaches protected by nets.
- Never touch the reef to avoid breaking or damaging the coral.
- Avoid heatstroke by drinking lots of water, especially when you are spending time in the sun.
- Pack a waterproof bag or case for you phone or camera to make sure you can capture the magical underwater world that is the Great Barrier Reef.

Glenfern Sanctuary
Why not take a tour up the island with us to Port Fitzroy the home of Glenfern Sanctuary. You won’t be disappointed! Glenfern Sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to experience native wildlife on Great Barrier Island. The Sanctuary covers an area of around 150 acres in the north of the island at Port Fitzroy and is the result of nearly 10 years hard work. Over 9,000 native trees have been planted and there is an extensive track network. A swing bridge enables visitors to climb into the crown of a 600-year-old kauri tree. Ongoing rat and cat eradication provides a safe habitat for many native species including the black petrel and brown teal, breeding here; also kaka and chevron skink and the recently introduced North Island robin. The guided walk takes around 2 hours and leaves us plenty of time to explore the Windy Canyon and east coast beaches on the way back to your accommodation.

Hi, just wanted to let you know we had a truly wonderful time on GBI. The house was perfect, dry comfortable and we loved the quirky decor. We couldn’t have asked for better. What a beautiful place this Island is. We’ve all fallen in love with it. I was so lucky to discover it. Thank you for everything. Julianne, Pedro and Charlie March 2024
We’re at the airport in Claris, very reluctantly preparing to leave. Just want to say a huge thanks for getting everything so perfectly right. That accommodation was just stunning – views, sunlight, bird life, ripe figs, proximity to store and Gooseberry Flat swimming, really well stocked kitchen. Absolutely gorgeous in good weather and bad. This place is magic! Sue February 2024
Kia Ora team,
Just a quick email to say thank you for all your assistance in organising our recent trip to Great Barrier Island. Our group had a fantastic time – visiting various places around the island, and walking the Aotea track. We had an amazing few days at Pitokuku House – what a fantastic place – with some of the team looking to come back and visit again with their families in the future. We are also keen to come again and perhaps do some of the other walks, and do the Dark Sky experience (although we had some nice evenings just lying out looking up at the stars anyway). Norm and Fleur were great – and it was fun to be able to give them some Róse which they really appreciated. We were able to communicate with them, and drop off and pick up was seamless…
So again, thank you for all your help and for making a very memorable week away. Ngā mihi, Louise Morgan February 2024
I really want to thank you for all your help with our bookings! We had a fabulous time, and your advice re. accommodation nights, car rental, and the Aotea track was spot on. Being able to run ideas past you was really much appreciated. Great Barrier Island is so amazing – I didn’t want to leave. Many thanks, Michelle Ashbury July 2023
Just wanted to say thank you for organizing my trip to Great Barrier. I loved everything about the place – the flights, the people, the landscape, the peace and quiet, the fresh air, the amazing scenery, the welcome, the quirky business and the talented artists. What a brilliant trip. I’d like to come again, in winter, and perhaps stay up at Port Fitzroy. Will be in touch. Thanks again, all the best, Julie Macdonald May 2023
Good afternoon Go Great Barrier Island Team, Sincere thanks for the four night holiday package you arranged for us for last week. All the bookings you put in place for us were exactly what we needed and flowed seamlessly together. The location of the accommodation was perfect and the Sundancer cruise (which was awesome! Thank you Chris) was easily rescheduled when the weather demanded a change. Everyone we met on Great Barrier Island was so friendly and helpful and we would dearly love to return again sometime soon. Thank you again. Kind regards Hilary McNaughten December 2022
Go Great Barrier performs a very valuable service for visitors looking to travel to Great Barrier Island and connect with suppliers of accommodation and travel services.
Initially I was unsure about how to make and coordinate direct bookings but after contacting GGBI they were handled quickly and the outcomes were just what we were looking for, so thank you, Laura and Steve.
We did not expect to alter the bookings made but when we asked to stay another night and fly back to Auckland, Steve arranged these quickly along with transport connections to cover for having no rental car on the final day. Thank you, Steve.
With thanks and kind regards John Bedkober October 2022
We just wanted to take a moment to say a massive thank you for the most unforgettable holiday we’ve just had on the Barrier.
It wasn’t the holiday we originally booked, this one was a thousand times better. We saw the whole island spent a lot of time at Medlands, loved the Good Heavens star experience, Sunshine Cottage was off the hook, what amazing views and the attention to detail throughout the cottage was mind blowing and all just added to the holiday. We walked some of the tramway track, saw the art gallery and bought home a very cool painting, walked to the hot pools, and generally enjoyed ourselves the rest of the time. We will be recommending your holidays to everyone we meet.
Again thank you so much for against all odds putting together the perfect holiday for us.
Thanks Sarah & Tim March 2022
Just wanted to say a big thank you for sorting out our weekend. I can honestly say we had a blast, the island is absolutely stunning, the people were so nice and friendly we really loved everyone we met. The Irish pub was awesome. We were lucky enough to be there for Thursday night open mike, and we took full advantage of the fun. We met Pete and Terry who so kindly took us out on their fishing boat, we loved it. We couldn’t believe how amazing the food was. The whole experience is going to be a huge talking point for us all for a long time. Thank you once again for everything. Cheers Nicki
Just to let you know that we had an absolutely wonderful stay. Everything went well – like clockwork. The rental we had was wonderful and Muriwai was just beautiful – we’re so pleased we stayed there. We ate at Tipi & Bobs and the Irish Pub – both wonderful evening meals. We visited the Social Club at Tryphena and watched the Super Rugby game. Lunched at My Pat Puku, visited the crafts and gallery places (the little Museum is wonderful – so much history and displays). We went right to the top of the island by road, and the bottom and to the hot pools. The signposts and the great well maintained walks and information posts were just superb. The people are so friendly – everyone waves! Thanks again Well done Great Barrier Island! Jenny & Ces Horan
I just wanted to say thank you for the package you put together for us to visit Great Barrier Island. We had a fabulous time and really enjoyed exploring your stunning island. You made it so easy, taking care of all the bookings and putting together the things that we wanted to do. We were met off the plane and handed the keys to our rental car. Norm at the information desk at the airport gave me great maps and recommended some good day walks for us to do (we did most of the day trips he recommended too). Angeline was at the Great Barrier Lodge when we called in to drop off our bags. Amongst other things we enjoyed the kauri bridge at Glenfern and the view of Port Fitzroy from Sunset Rock. We walked to Windy Canyon and beyond into the Pinnacles area for a few hours before walking back out the same way – this was so visually stunning and a real highlight for me. Hilde was fabulous when we did the Good Heavens Experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our day on the Sundancer with Chris. We felt very privileged as he still took us out even though we were the only ones. Our accommodation was just right for us and it was so lovely to spend each evening out on the deck admiring the Whangaparapara Harbour. We ate dinner at the Great Barrier Lodge restaurant each night because it was so good (and we could have a drink and not worry about driving).| The info sheet you sent through beforehand was useful and the list of places to eat was also helpful – especially for breakfast and lunches. Thank you again for putting this all together for us – flights, accommodation, rental car & activities. We had a fabulous trip and really enjoyed exploring the island. Deborah Malcolm
We would like to thank you for the wonderful holiday we had on the Barrier. We absolutely loved The Bach, and felt we were in paradise being so close to such a beautiful beach! We made the most of having some lovely meals out, and all within walking distance. The swims in the bay were so lovely. It created a wonderful memory for my husband and I for out 30th Wedding Anniversary. Just perfect! It was great flying over from Dairy Flat, and we were impressed with the service we received. Thanks again, we would love to return sometime. Kerry and Janice Sinclair
We’re back home now and I wanted to say we all had the most fabulous time on Great Barrier Island. Thanks for organising the trip for us, everything was perfect (even the weather!). We went star gazing, did an early morning Astro photography workshop, fishing charter and walked up and over Mt Hobson via the hot pools. We packed all we could into and 5 days and we all hope to return for more exploring. Helen McMahon
We will definitely be back! Lauren
We are here and enjoying this beautiful island of yours. It is truly spectacular! I only have one gripe.. You must add a suggestion in all your bookings that a 2 night stay is not enough – a minimum stay of at least a week should be recommended as once you are here, you never want to leave. Thank you so much for your help, I’m already dreading tomorrow when we leave 🙁 Talei
Just wanted to say thank you very much for your help and advice when organising our recent visit to the Barrier. While the weather wasn’t always perfect, it didn’t stop my sister and I doing anything or from having the best time, including doing some of your fabulous walks. We needed more time to fit more of them in! The accommodation was really comfortable and perfect for our needs; we were met by a charming young woman from the car rental company and the X-Trail was just the ticket for us to explore the length and breadth of the island (which we did), and we simply loved chatting with locals and restaurant owners while dining out. Your advice and wonderful service were just the icing on the cake, so thank you very much. You live in a magical place and we’ll be back! Anne
We all just wanted to say thank you so much for organising a great Christmas holiday for us on Great Barrier Island! We had a very special time and made wonderful family memories after being apart in different countries for years. Thank you for all your help and advice, we have recommended you highly to everyone we know. Thanks again, Emma
I just wanted to thank you for organising everything for us for our weekend. We had a fabulous time! Everything was great – we loved staying at Tipi and Bobs and Marjorie made us very welcome, the units were great, lovely views and the food was fantastic! The cakes were wonderful, Phaedra had done a great job. It’s amazing how much we managed to pack into such a short time, the first time I’ve been there but will certainly come back for a longer stay next time. Once again, thanks for a wonderful job. Maxine

Posted: March 23, 2024 | Last updated: March 23, 2024
Snorkeling offers an accessible and magical way to explore the underwater realms that cover much of our planet. This guide, crafted with the discerning traveler in mind, explores the world’s premier snorkeling destinations. Each location is selected for its vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters and its commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism practices. From the kaleidoscopic coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef to the serene, turtle-filled waters of the Gili Islands, these destinations offer unparalleled opportunities to immerse yourself in the beauty of the underwater world.
1. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Debra James
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, comprising over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2,300 kilometers. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to an extraordinary diversity of marine life, including over 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, and a myriad of other marine creatures.
The reef’s vast size means snorkeling spots are suitable for all experience levels, from shallow, calm waters for beginners to more challenging sites with strong currents for experienced snorkelers.
Insider’s Tip: Visit the outer reef for the clearest water and most vibrant coral formations. Many operators offer eco-friendly tours that contribute to reef conservation efforts.
When to Travel: The best time to visit is from June to October, during the Australian winter, when the water is clearest and snorkeling conditions are optimal.
How to Get There: Fly into Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, with international connections through major Australian cities. From Cairns, numerous tour operators offer snorkeling trips to various parts of the reef.
2. The Maldives

The Maldives, a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life. The archipelago’s atolls offer some of the best snorkeling in the world, with easy access to the reefs right from the islands’ shores. Snorkelers can expect to encounter a wide array of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, rays, and even whale sharks in certain areas.
Insider’s Tip: For a unique experience, choose a resort that offers night snorkeling tours to see the reef’s nocturnal creatures come to life.
When to Travel: The dry season from November to April offers the best snorkeling conditions, with calm seas and excellent visibility.
How to Get There: International flights arrive at Malé International Airport. From there, seaplanes or boats are typically used to reach the various islands and resorts.
3. The Silfra Fissure, Iceland

The Silfra Fissure offers a unique snorkeling experience in the crystal-clear glacial waters between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The visibility in Silfra is unparalleled, often exceeding 100 meters, allowing snorkelers to see the stunning underwater topography and vivid blue colors of the fissure. The water temperature is cold year-round, but dry suits provided by tour operators ensure a comfortable experience.
Insider’s Tip: Book your snorkeling tour early in the morning for a more serene experience before the site gets busy with other tourists.
When to Travel: Snorkeling in Silfra is possible year-round, but the summer months of June to August offer more daylight and slightly warmer water temperatures.
How to Get There: Silfra is located in Þingvellir National Park, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavik. Guided tours can be arranged from the city.
4. Raja Ampat, Indonesia
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Ditras Family
Raja Ampat, located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia, is considered one of Earth’s most biodiverse marine habitats. The archipelago’s clear, warm waters are home to over 1,000 species of coral-inhabiting fish, 700 species of mollusk, and more than 500 types of coral. The shallow reefs offer easy access for snorkelers, providing up-close encounters with the vibrant underwater life.
Insider’s Tip: Stay at an eco-resort to support sustainable tourism practices and gain access to exclusive snorkeling sites.
When to Travel: The best time to visit is from October to April when the seas are calmest, and visibility is best.
How to Get There: Fly to Sorong via Jakarta or Bali, then take a boat to your chosen island within the Raja Ampat archipelago.
5. The Bay of Donsol, Philippines
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Dudarev Mikhail
The Bay of Donsol is renowned for allowing snorkelers to swim with whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea. These gentle giants frequent the waters of Donsol from November to June, attracted by the abundance of plankton.
Snorkeling with whale sharks in Donsol is regulated to ensure the safety of both the animals and snorkelers, providing a responsible wildlife encounter that is both thrilling and respectful.
Insider’s Tip: Opt for a morning snorkeling session when whale shark sightings are most frequent and the water conditions are ideal.
When to Travel: Visit between November and June for the best chance to snorkel with whale sharks, with peak sightings from February to May.
How to Get There: Fly to Legazpi City from Manila, then travel by road to Donsol, which takes approximately 1.5 hours.
6. The Belize Barrier Reef, Belize
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Globe Guide Media Inc
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest coral reef system in the world, offering an incredible diversity of snorkeling sites, including the famous Great Blue Hole. The reef is home to a vast array of marine life, including endangered species such as the West Indian manatee and the green turtle. The clear, warm waters and the reef’s proximity to the coast make it an ideal snorkeling destination for all skill levels.
Insider’s Tip: Include a visit to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where the shallow waters are teeming with fish, rays, and occasionally, nurse sharks.
When to Travel: The dry season from November to May provides the best snorkeling conditions, with calm seas and excellent visibility.
How to Get There: Fly into Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City. Take a domestic flight or boat to your chosen destination along the reef from there.
7. The Red Sea, Egypt
The Red Sea is famed for its clear, warm waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life. The extensive fringing reef system offers easy shore access for snorkelers, making it possible to explore the underwater wonders just steps from the beach. The Red Sea’s reefs are well-preserved, with strict conservation measures in place to protect the delicate marine ecosystem.
Insider’s Tip: For an off-the-beaten-path experience, visit the reefs around Marsa Alam, where there are fewer crowds and abundant marine life.
When to Travel: The best time for snorkeling in the Red Sea is from March to May and from September to November when the water temperatures are comfortable and the weather is pleasant.
How to Get There: International flights arrive at several airports along the Red Sea coast, including Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. Numerous resorts and snorkeling sites are easily accessible from these cities.
8. The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands offer a unique snorkeling experience, with the chance to encounter an array of endemic species above and below the water. The nutrient-rich currents attract diverse marine life, including sea lions, marine iguanas, and countless fish species. The islands’ remote location has helped preserve their pristine condition, offering a once-in-a-lifetime snorkeling adventure.
Insider’s Tip: Consider a liveaboard snorkeling cruise to visit the islands’ most remote and unspoiled snorkeling sites.
When to Travel: From December to May, the warm season offers the best snorkeling conditions, with warmer water and calmer seas.
How to Get There: Fly to Quito or Guayaquil in Ecuador, then take a domestic flight to the Galápagos Islands. Snorkeling tours are available from both Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal islands.

The reef provides a habitat for various marine species, while the cenotes offer a glimpse into an otherworldly underwater landscape of crystal-clear waters and dramatic rock formations. Snorkeling in the cenotes is an unforgettable experience, with the sunlight filtering through the water, creating a magical atmosphere.
Insider’s Tip: For a truly unique experience, snorkel in the cenotes early in the morning before the crowds arrive, when the light and visibility are at their best.
When to Travel: The best time to snorkel in the Yucatán Peninsula is from November to March, during the dry season, when sea conditions are calm and visibility is high.
How to Get There: Fly into Cancún International Airport, a gateway to the Yucatán Peninsula’s snorkeling destinations. The reef and cenotes are accessible by car or tour from Cancún and the Riviera Maya.
10. The Seychelles

The Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine life. The islands offer a variety of snorkeling experiences, from the shallow, sheltered reefs ideal for beginners to more adventurous sites with stronger currents. The Seychelles’ commitment to environmental conservation ensures that its marine ecosystems remain healthy and vibrant.
Insider’s Tip: Visit the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, where you can snorkel among hundreds of fish species and pristine coral gardens within a protected reserve.
When to Travel: The best snorkeling conditions in the Seychelles are from April to May and from October to November when the water is calmest and visibility is at its peak.
How to Get There: International flights arrive at Seychelles International Airport on Mahé, the largest island. From Mahé, inter-island ferries and domestic flights provide access to the other islands.

Overrun Japanese town puts up barrier fence to block tourist photos of Mount Fuji
- 10 hours ago
A picturesque Japanese town is putting up a giant mesh barrier to block a popular selfie spot near Mount Fuji.
Fujikawaguchiko, at the foot of the Yoshida Trail to Mount Fuji, has become overrun with foreign tourists trying to get the perfect photo of Japan’s most famous mountain.
Specifically, they’re standing in front of Lawson’s, an outpost of the large Japanese convenience store chain, to get a shot of the contrast between the busy neon-lit shop and the peaceful mountain behind it.
Now the town has had enough and is putting up the mesh barrier to block the view, a local official told CNN.
More from Newshub
The official, who did not want to give her name, said that there have been ongoing problems with tourists leaving trash and not following traffic rules. Despite signs and security guards being posted to warn them, the situation has persisted.
“It is regrettable that we had to take such measures,” the official said.
The net, which measures 2.5m high and 20m across, will be erected early next week.
The town of Fujikawaguchiko is in Yamanashi prefecture, to the north of Fuji and about 100km west of Tokyo.
The crowds plaguing the small town are part of a larger problem affecting Japan.
Japan has been experiencing overtourism issues since reopening post-pandemic in late 2022. March 2024 was the country’s all-time biggest tourism month ever, with more than three million foreign tourists entering the country.
Many of them head straight to Mount Fuji, an icon of Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site, leaving garbage and causing erosion along the way.
“Overtourism - and all the subsequent consequences like rubbish, rising CO2 emissions and reckless hikers - is the biggest problem facing Mount Fuji,” Masatake Izumi, a Yamanashi prefectural government official, told CNN Travel last year.
Some locals had even nicknamed the 3776m mountain, called Fuji-san in Japanese, “trash mountain.”
In an effort to mitigate the overcrowding, Yamanashi’s prefectural government announced several new policies for tourists, including a 4000-person daily limit for hikers and a mandatory fee of 2000 yen (NZ$21) apiece. Previously, the fee had been optional.
Putting up a barrier to block would-be photographers also has precedent elsewhere in the world: The Austrian town of Hallstatt, which was said to have inspired the look of the megahit Disney movie Frozen .
Hallstatt - which has about 800 permanent residents and has as many as 10,000 tourists a day in peak season - erected a wooden fence in May 2023 as a deterrent against selfie-takers.
