A Typical Day at Spirit Bear Lodge

Each day in the great bear rainforest is different from the next, but here is a little bit of an idea of what you might expect your experience to look like..

Every day at Spirit Bear Lodge is unique. We visit many diverse and awe-inspiring locations in search of wildlife. We travel in our comfortable heated boats for an hour to an hour and a half through the Traditional Territory of the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation to reach different wildlife viewing locations each day.

Tours vary depending on recent wildlife sightings and weather. Some days could be spent waiting patiently in one river system for wildlife to appear, while others could involve visiting several locations or exploring estuaries by zodiac.

Kitasoo Xai’xais Culture is integrated into each day through spending time with local guides, visiting Cultural sites, and learning the history of the Kitasoo Xai’xais People. Our staff share their intimate knowledge of traditional foods, medicinal plants, and stories passed down through generations.

Please note we do have a minimum age requirement of 12 years old to partake on our adventure packages.

Our goal is to deliver a transformative experience through complete immersion in nature and by sharing our appreciation for The Great Bear Rainforest.

Know Before You Go

Mobility requirements.

Good mobility is essential for travel on the trails we use and for embarking and disembarking our vessels onto rocky shorelines and beaches. Trails can be uneven, steep, muddy or overgrown, and sometimes we even make our own. A high level of fitness is not needed for our tours, but a high level of mobility is required.

Typically we can travel distances of a few hundred meters at each river or estuary but sometimes we go further or we may visit more than one river or estuary in a day.

Since we conduct our wildlife viewing tours from land in remote wilderness, good mobility is a necessity. Unfortunately it is just not possible to make our tours more accessible.

If you have mobility issues please contact us directly for more information and to ensure you can participate fully in our experiences.

Bear watching, the most popular activity in the world

Bear watching is one of the most popular activities in the world, and Canada has the longest bear watching season. Every year from April or May to October, it is the season to watch black bears and brown bears, including the rarest Kermode bear. Traveling through the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia from August to October, you can capture the wonderful moments of bears catching salmon. Churchill in Manitoba is the best place to search for polar bears in October and November. Ride in a tundra buggy, enter the polar bear sanctuary, and watch these naive and powerful polar kings roaming in the wild.

Wildlife Viewing & Ecotours

Northern Vancouver Island is home to an abundant population of black bears. While bears hibernate in the winter, it is not uncommon to observe them during the spring and summer. Often sighted picking salmon berries or lazily grazing hillsides for lush shoots and grass, black bear viewing is a welcomed experience by many.  Every fall, black bears emerge from the forests, drawn to estuaries and river edges to feast on spawning Pacific salmon.

Guided nature tours also provide a unique opportunity for insight into the life of coastal bears. Join professional naturalists on a journey into the depths of British Columbia’s remote coastal wilderness. The experience invites sightings of black bears, grizzly bears, and other coastal wildlife, just enough to hint at the life of these remarkable animals and the beautiful region in which they reside. Choose your bear watching tour today!

Remember that bears are wild animals and should not be approached too closely, disturbed or disrupted.  Self guided bear viewing is done at one’s own risk. Be bear aware.

Port Hardy is located within a major flyway for thousands of species of migratory birds. From boreal dwellers to seabirds, shorebirds and birds of prey, there is excellent opportunity for bird watchers.  Watersheds throughout Northern Vancouver Island provide critical habitat to many species, serving as breeding grounds and nurseries, foraging grounds, and providing refuge from predators and the elements. To a birders delight, local forests, lakes and river systems, estuaries, and the coastal shoreline and ocean waters are alive with species throughout the year.

The nearby Scott Islands are a protected area, and are considered critical habitat for breeding seabirds, including the tufted puffin, and acts as primary habitat for more than 70,000 species of seabirds including several species Auklets and Petrels.

Every summer the waters off Port Hardy come alive.  Increasing sunlight drives plankton production that form the base of one of the most productive food webs in the world.  Huge schools of small fish forage on the plankton, providing food for Pacific salmon on their way to their home stream.  Sea birds, marine mammals and other wildlife are drawn to the area to forage and socialize. From Late-May to the end of September, sightings of orcas, humpbacks, minke and grey whales, seals and sea lions  and endless marine birds are sure to provide an experience of a life time. Visitors to Port Hardy can join a whale watching trip or wildlife viewing tour or try land-based viewing.

Marine wildlife encounters are an exciting bonus when spending time on the water.  Please familiarize with the Be Whale Wise guidelines. Regulated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Be Whale Wise Guidelines are set as a standard of practice for responsible wildlife viewing, ensuring the safety of both boaters and wildlife.

Great Bear Nature Lodge

Introduction

Great Bear Nature Lodge offers grizzly bear viewing excursions from Port Hardy to a beautiful river valley on the central coast of British Columbia.

With only eight rooms and a maximum of 16 guests, this floating lodge assures a personalised wilderness experience. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a shower. The common area is a comfortable place for relaxing and listening to natural history presentations from the wildlife biologists. Natural wood decks surround the lodge – a perfect place to have a glass of wine while enjoying the beauty of the scenery. Wilderness-gourmet meals await you at the lodge on your return from your excursions. The freshest local ingredients and organic food are used when it is available. In between bear viewing sessions you will be able to join a guided activity such as an interpretive walk or a boat excursion, or you may choose to relax with a book from the extensive library.

Day 1 : Vancouver > Port Hardy > Great Bear Lodge

Late this morning depart from Vancouver International Airport (South Terminal) for a 70 minute flight to Port Hardy. Upon arrival transfer to the town of Port Hardy for lunch (own cost) and to explore the town. Mid-afternoon you will be transferred to the floatplane base for your scenic flight over the Queen Charlotte Strait to the floating lodge. After a brief introduction to the lodge you will head out on your first grizzly excursion.

Day 2 : Great Bear Lodge

After some good coffee and breakfast this morning, you will be on the trail of the grizzly bear again. A typical viewing session lasts three hours. After a morning of adventure, return to the lodge for lunch and a chance to relax. Spend the early afternoon exploring the surrounding area with a guide. A popular activity is the interpretive rainforest walk, examining bear signs and the general ecology of the area. Later this afternoon you will venture out to see the bears before returning to the lodge for dinner. On clear nights, the stars are amazing.

Day 3 : Great Bear Lodge

As your stay at the lodge continues, you begin to settle into the natural rhythm of the valley. The bears are generally most active in the early morning and late afternoon hours, which is why your viewing sessions focus on these times. Over the course of your stay you will be taken to a variety of sites, depending on the bear activity. For your afternoon excursion today you may take a guided sea kayaking tour of the estuary, or a boat cruise to explore the glacier-carved inlet. Or you may prefer to relax and enjoy the view from the lodge. The Great Bear Rainforest is home to many animals, including grey wolves, otters, black bears, mink and bald eagles.

Day 4 : Great Bear Lodge > Port Hardy

After your parting session with the bears you will enjoy lunch at the Great Bear Lodge. You will be returned to Port Hardy in the late afternoon between 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm. Due to unpredictable weather conditions for flights around the lodge and Port Hardy, tonight you will stay at a hotel in Port Hardy.

Day 5 : Port Hardy > Vancouver

After check-out of your hotel in Port Hardy, you will be transferred to the Port Hardy airport for your return flight to Vancouver.
