Things to do in Gulmarg

Last Updated on: Feb 10, 2023

About this Blog: Gulmarg is one of the most popular hill stations in India and is also famous as a ski destination. In this blog we will share our experience in Gulmarg, how to reach there, where to stay, Gulmarg Gondola, things to do in Gulmarg and more. Read this Gulmarg Travel Guide to know all about Gulmarg.

You can call Gulmarg a happy destination. Because I am sure you will feel nothing but happy in this beautiful hill station of Kashmir. Gulmarg is known as an ultimate skiing destination and one of the top winter destinations in India. It also has the world’s highest Gondola ride. Apart from these there are lots of interesting things to do in Gulmarg.

Meadows of Gulmarg

In short, Gulmarg is spectacular in winter. Infact, this was one of the reasons I was skeptical to visit this place in the spring. Also the fact that we were exploring more of offbeat Kashmir in our trip, I had thought of skipping the popular Gulmarg. But boy! I was so wrong. The place is simply breathtaking in any season. And for a first timer in Kashmir, Gulmarg should be on your Jammu and Kashmir tour , no matter what.

I do have to thank Agni for literally dragging me there. Yeah! Yeah! The wife is not always right! The husband also has great ideas (sometimes!).

A beautiful stream in Kashmir

Gulmarg literally means “the meadow of flowers” . In summer, the green vistas of this place are dotted with colourful flowers. The place with its breathtaking beauty, mesmerizing landscapes, gondola ride and adventure activities is undoubtedly an all season destination. Read along to know our experience here along with things to do in Gulmarg, how to reach, where to stay and other relevant information.

Where is Gulmarg?

Things to do in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is a beautiful hill station located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town is located at an altitude of 8690 feet in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas.

Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak had named this place ‘Gulmarg’ in the 16th century. He used to visit here with his wife Habba Khatoon .

Gulmarg Travel Guide

Gulmarg was also one of the favourite destinations of Emperor Jahangir. It is believed that he had collected as many as 21 wild flowers from here for his own gardens.

During the British rule, Gulmarg served as a retreat for the British soldiers just like Darjeeling , Shimla and Mussoorie.

Is Gulmarg safe?

Yes, it is absolutely safe to visit Gulmarg. The place is visited by tourists throughout the year. The local Kashmiri are always courteous and helpful to tourists. And this is not only in this place, but the entire Kashmir. We have a detailed blog on if Kashmir is safe for tourists that you can read to know more.

Gulmarg Travel Guide

How to reach gulmarg.

To reach Gulmarg, you have to first reach Srinagar. Srinagar is well connected by flights from New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

From Srinagar, Gulmarg is about 60 km and it takes about 90 minutes to reach there by car. You will get private taxis from Srinagar to Gulmarg. The taxi fare is Rs 2000-2500 including driver and fuel.

Srinagar to Gulmarg

Gulmarg in shared taxi

You will not get any shared cab from Srinagar. You have to take a shared cab to Tangmarg. From there, you have to take another cab to Gulmarg.  Local buses are also available, but only upto Tangmarg.

What is the best time to visit Gulmarg?

The best time to visit Gulmarg actually depends on what you want to do there. If you are the one to enjoy snow and snow activities, then winter is your time. There are some who visit here to beat the heat of the plains. For them, summer will be the best time. For those looking for greenery in the valleys and flowers, July to September will be a good time. April to June is perhaps the busiest season.

Things to do in Gulmarg in 1 Day

There are a lot of things to do in Gulmarg. As much as we wanted to stay for a night here, we finally opted for a day trip. We decided we would stop for a night here the next time we visit in the winters.

We started quite early from Srinagar and soon we were out of the city. The first glimpse of the mountains seems to show us what to expect for the day. Soon we reached Magam, a small village on the way.

Finally, we reached Tangmarg from where the uphill road starts. The landscape too changes gradually. The plains and fields of mustard are gradually replaced by tall pines and cedars. The green meadows looked soothing to the eyes.

Meadows of Gulmarg

Soon we reached Gulmarg, our destination for the day. The bus stop and parking area is a small place. The place itself is quite a small hill station totally dependent on tourism. There are a number of shops and eateries in the market area. You will also find a lot of guides and ponies in this area. Cars from outside are not allowed beyond this point.

Gulmarg Club House

As soon as we reached the parking area, a number of guides and pony owners approached us. Yes, you will be approached by them and they will ask you to take the help of guides or take a pony ride. If you wish to take a pony ride, you can definitely do so. It will help the local economy.

However, a guide is not required to explore this place. All the places are well marked and there is not much extra a guide to add to the stories.

Ponies at Gulmarg can take you around

If you like to walk around, then ponies are also not needed to explore Gulmarg. The attractions, though not very near, are also not quite far away. If you like to walk around, you can definitely explore the place on foot, especially if you are staying for the night. Let me share with you what we did.

We had reached Gulmarg by 9 AM and decided to explore the place on foot. The pony owners warned us that the places are all far away, but yet we stuck to our decision. We knew that the Gondola ride would start at 11 AM. So we decided to visit the Maharaja Palace first.

1. Looking for History in Maharaja’s Palace

Maharaja Palace

The Maharaja Palace was nearest to the Parking Area. Not that we found much history there, the palace was once a royal palace of King Ranbir Singh of Kashmir. The palace might have been quite grand once upon a time, but time has definitely taken its toll on this wooden structure. The palace looks beautiful from the outside surrounded by tall pine and cedar trees.

Unfortunately, the palace was closed that day. There was a lone guard sitting in front of the palace. Although he did not allow us entry, he did share a few interesting stories about the place. He mentioned that the Maharaja Palace is supposedly haunted and only a braveheart can venture to the place after the sun is down. Well, the worn down building along with the sky high trees did give an eerie appeal to the place.

After admiring the Maharaja Palace from outside, we decided to head out for our next destination. The guard also informed us that there is a viewpoint just a few steps away from the palace. It is not exactly a viewpoint, but you get a great view of the Baramulla plains and the mountains from there. Pakistan is just beyond those mountains, the guard informed.

Maharaja Palace has a nominal entry fee of Rs 30.00.

2. Gulmarg Golf Course

Gulmarg Golf Course

To be honest, I was awestruck seeing so much green. It was here I decided for the first time that Gulmarg is a happy place.

Gulmarg was once a retreat for the British troops in India. The British quite loved a game of golf and so they developed golf courses in this quaint hill station. The gold course was opened in 1911 and is one of the highest ones in the world. The first Golf Championship was played here in 1922.

The Gulmarg Golf Course was redesigned and reopened in 2011. I do not understand anything about golf. However, I found the place quite beautiful. Everywhere is green and it is so soothing to the eyes.

3. St Mary’s Church

View of St Marys Church in meadows

St. Mary’s Church is located just near the Golf Course. The century old Victorian Church looks quite beautiful standing in the middle of the meadows. The church has grey stone walls and is decorated beautifully inside. It is believed that the church was built in 1902 and was renovated later in 2013.

4. Go for the Gulmarg Gondola Ride

Gulmarg Gondola

After marveling at the St. Mary’s Church, we decided to go towards the Gondola Station. Gulmarg Gondola is by far the biggest attraction of Gulmarg. The cable car takes you from Gulmarg to the top of Apharwat Peak. Believe me, this cable car ride is a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of experience.

Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world’s highest operating cable cars . This ropeway is capable of ferrying 600 people per hour. The ropeway is divided into 2 phases – Phase 1 and Phase 2. Gulmarg is the starting point while Apharwat is the end point. Kongdori in between is the centre point and the end point of Phase 1.

The Gondola Station is about 1.5 km walking distance from the parking area. If you want to take a pony, it will cost about Rs 200-250.00.

Gulmarg Gondola Boadring Station

The Gulmarg Gondola Boarding Point is a huge building. There is a ticket counter outside from where you will get tickets for both Phase 1 and Phase 2. You can get a ticket to Phase 1 only and then get your ticket to Phase 2 from the Phase 1 cable station.

We got our tickets for Phase 1 only and went inside the boarding station. The inside is quite impressive. Soon we were in the middle of a long queue waiting for our own cable car ride.

View from the cable car at Gondola ride

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1

Fortunately for us, we did not have to wait more than 10 minutes in the queue. We heard that in peak tourist seasons, the waiting time is considerably longer, both while buying the tickets as well as at the boarding point.

We boarded the cable car and were off. It takes about 10 minutes to reach Kongdori, the Phase 1 station. In between we saw snow, pine trees, Gujjar settlements and more snow. It was an interesting ride. Once we were at Phase 1 station, we got down and stepped out. And this is what we saw!

First view of the snow at Kongdori Phase 1 of Gondola ride

There was snow and snow everywhere. All my desire to see snow in Kashmir was totally fulfilled. First we saw snowfall at Naranag and then on our way to Sonmarg. And finally in Gulmarg we were literally rolling in snow. As we walked down, we saw a few tourists trying their hand on skiing. Several others were playing with the snow while many were enjoying other snow activities.

Views of mountains at Kongdori

What did we do? Well, I was totally ecstatic to see so much snow. Agni was equally happy! We walked, fell down on snow, had a snowball fight and did all the crazy things we wanted to do. Later I went for a snowmobile ride that made me all giddy with joy. I actually felt like a kid who has been given her favourite chocolate! Yes, Gulmarg is definitely a happy place!

There is an eating area where there are a few restaurants. We went there to have Kahwa and Kashmiri Pulao. We did not go to Phase 2 and decided to spend our time at Kongdori itself.

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2

Boarding Station at Gulmarg gondola Phase 1

The boarding station for Phase 2 is just beside that of Phase 1. It takes another 10 -12 minutes to reach Apharwat Peak , the end point of Phase 2. The views from the peak are quite breathtaking. If you have time, you can trek to the Alpather Lake located about 5 km away. However, remember that the trail is quite steep. There are no eateries in Phase 2.

If you are planning to trek to Alpather Lake, start early and visit Phase 2 first.

The end of Phase 2 is actually not the Apharwat Peak. It is a part of Kongdoori Mountains, a shoulder of the Apharwat Peak. The top of Apharwat Peak is towards Alpather Lake and you have to trek to reach there.

Mountain peaks of kashmir

After enjoying a considerable amount of time at Phase 1, we returned back to Gulmarg. We decided to walk around a bit and finally return back to the parking area.

The ticket cost for Gulmarg Gondola Ride for phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori) is Rs 740 for Indians and Rs 1210 for foreigners for extended duration.

The ticket cost for phase 2 is Rs 1210 Indians and Rs 1900 for foreigners.

5. Maharani Temple

Maharani Temple at Gulmarg

On our return, we stopped at the Maharani Temple. The temple, located on a small hillock is said to be the royal temple of the Dogra Dynasty. The temple was built by Maharaja Hari Singh and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is known as Maharani Temple because the queen Maharani Mohini Bai used to pray here everyday.

The priest of the temple is a Muslim. So yes, there is no religious intolerance here.

It was almost 4 PM when we returned back to the main parking area. We had a lot of fun in Gulmarg that day. We had in fact done all the touristy things that day. After all, Gulmarg is a fully tourist destination and there is a reason for the popularity of the place.

If you are staying here for the night, then there are a few more places that you can visit.

6. Strawberry Valley

This is a small area having a strawberry plantation. It is not really a valley. The plantation can only be seen in the winter months. So if you do not have much time in hand, you can easily skip this place.

Gulmarg – A COMPLETE Travel Guide and Itinerary

gulmarg

If one is to make a list of the most visited hill stations of our country, then I am sure the name Gulmarg will be among the top ones. Quite rightly termed as the meadow of flowers, it is indeed a heavenly place to tread in that offers mesmerizing landscapes and an enthralling possibility of various adventure activities.

Such is the beauty of this tiny hamlet that it attracts people from all over the country throughout the year. It is possibly one of those destinations where the tourist season never ends. From families to adventure enthusiasts, Gulmarg has a lot to offer.

In the post below, I will provide complete details on how to plan a trip to Gulmarg. The information below covers topics like how to reach, where to stay, public transport, places to visit, things to do, the best time to visit, and several other helpful tips.

For all other details on Kashmir like mobile connectivity, public transport, taxi services, and several other tips, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Kashmir – A Complete Travel Guide .

To get the best hotel rates, and taxi charges, and to organize your trip to Kashmir, you can speak with Kunal @ 9910 402 252. Give him my reference and you will surely get a discounted rate.

Below is a video that I shot in Gulmarg during my recent winter trip. You can also consider checking out this video for more details.

Where is Gulmarg?

For a brief introduction, Gulmarg is a hill station located in Kashmir, in the Pir Panjal Range of the western Himalayas, at an altitude of 2,650 meters (8,690 ft).

The name Gulmarg, literally translating into “meadow of flowers” was awarded by Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak who frequented the place with his wife Habba Khatoon in the 16th century.

Gulmarg was also a favorite of Mughal Emperor Jahangir who is said to have collected as many as 21 wildflowers for his garden from here.

Also Read: The Life & Legend of Habba Khatoon

During the English rule, Gulmarg served as a retreat for British civil servants looking to escape the scorching summer heat of plains in North India, much like Shimla and Mussoorie.

Golf was one of the favorite pastime activities that the English indulged in out here. They established three golf courses in Gulmarg, one exclusively for women. Of the three, one still survives and is now one of the world’s highest golf courses.

The first question that comes to mind, and I will begin the article with it, is why visit Gulmarg? What is it that you will find here and nowhere else? After all, it is also just another hill station like numerous others in our country.

The answer to the question is that Gulmarg has a little bit to offer for everyone in every season. Its lush green meadows make it look more like a picnic spot, perfect to bring your family and kids.

The cable car ride known as Gulmarg Gondola is the second-highest Gondola in the world and is an experience of its own. Trekking to Apharwat Peak and Alpather Lake is something that the adventurous kind can look forward to.

Come winter, the entire place gets buried deep under snow, making it a feast for the eyes. It is a great place for people chasing snow and wanting to experience a live snowfall for the first time. It is also one of the most famous ski resorts in India.

Road connectivity to Gulmarg is great and from Srinagar, you can get here in a matter of 2 to 3 hours at most. There are no long hours of driving involved. There are ample amount of hotels here and your cell phones will remain connected. Internet too is available at almost all the hotels.

If you are a bit on the religious side then the shrine of Baba Reshi, Maharani Temple, and St. Mary’s church of Gulmarg will definitely invoke your interest.

There are plenty of other places nearby that you can visit in a day’s drive if you have a few more days in hand. In short, Gulmarg is a perfect place for a family vacation as well as a road trip with a bunch of friends.

An Evening at Dal Lake

Is Gulmarg Safe?

Next, I will address the elephant in the room, the big question of whether or not it is safe to visit Gulmarg. The one-line answer is that yes it is completely safe to visit Gulmarg. It remains populated with tourists throughout the year from all corners of India.

It rarely gets affected by the unrest in the Kashmir region. But still, I will strongly advise keeping a watch on the news. If there was a word of any possible violence or unrest in Kashmir, it would be best to postpone your trip.

How to Reach Gulmarg?

In order to get to Gulmarg, you will first have to reach Srinagar. For people coming by their own vehicle, you can just drive to Srinagar city by either the regular Jammu-Srinagar highway or the Mughal road through Shopian.

Once you arrive in Srinagar, you can then just continue driving towards Gulmarg via Tangmarg. It will just be a 2 to 3 hours drive covering a distance of about 50-60 kilometers.

If you were however not traveling by your own vehicle, then Srinagar is well connected to the rest of the country by Air, Train, and Bus service.

No matter which part of the country you live in, you can easily reach the city by either flying or boarding a train. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Srinagar .

How to Reach Gulmarg from Srinagar?

If you were driving a car or riding a bike, then the route to reach Gulmarg would be as below.

Srinagar – Magam – Tangmarg – Gulmarg = 60 Kilometers

From Srinagar to Tangmarg, it is mostly a straight drive on a flat road with very little ascent. You will not even feel like driving in a hill station actually.

It is after Tangmarg that the actual steep ascent starts and you climb up a winding road till Gulmarg. Another good part is that the road is smooth and in good condition for the entire 60 kilometers of the journey. If you arrive at Srinagar by either flight or train, then you can choose either of the following options to visit Gulmarg.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Taxi

The best, easiest, and most convenient way would be to rent a private taxi for the trip. Depending on the type of cab you choose, the taxi fare from Srinagar to Gulmarg would come out to be between Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000 including fuel and driver.

You can either look for a taxi at the airport itself or book one in advance and have the driver pick you up from the airport or railway station.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Shared Taxi

For budget travelers, I would still recommend a private taxi if you are traveling in a group and can share the cost among 5 to 6 people. If you were however traveling solo then you can look for a shared cab as well.

The problem however is that it is not the most convenient way to travel. You will first have to reach Dal Gate in Srinagar and look for a shared cab to Parimpora or Batmaloo.

If you found one that was going directly to Tangmarg, you can board that. Otherwise, find one for Parimpora or Batmaloo.

From Parimpora / Batmaloo, you will again have to change cabs and look for a cab going to Tangmarg. Once you arrive at Tangmarg, you will board the third cab going towards Gulmarg.

An important thing to keep in mind is that the shared cabs here are known as ‘service gaadi’. If you asked anyone about shared cabs, they may just shrug their shoulders and say that they don’t know. If that happens, ask about service gaadi and they will know what you mean.

Another option is to look for a cab to first go to Magam from Srinagar. From Magam, you will easily find a shared cab for Tangmarg.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Shared Taxi Fare

The total fare for a shared cab from Srinagar to Gulmarg will be around Rs. 250 per person. From Srinagar to Tangmarg, you will pay about Rs. 100 and another Rs. 50 to Rs. 70 per person for Gulmarg.

How to reach Gulmarg from Srinagar by bus

There is no direct bus from Srinagar all the way to Gulmarg. It is actually a bit surprising considering the kind of major tourist spot that Gulmarg is.

Like shared cabs, your journey will have to be broken into three parts by bus as well. First, you will have to board a bus for either Parimpora or Batmaloo from Srinagar.

Then you will have to board a bus for Tangmarg, and then finally a bus from Tangmarg to Gulmarg.

During the summer season, there is a JKSRTC daily sightseeing Bus available in the morning from the Tourist Reception Center. It takes tourists to Gulmarg on a day trip, returning by evening.

My advice however would be to not rely on this service. It is only available in the summer season and that too not always. There is a high chance that this service was unavailable at the time of your trip.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Bus Fare

Srinagar to Gulmarg bus fare in total would cost you about Rs. 200 per person; including the bus fare and shared cab charges from Tangmarg.

gulmarg

How to reach Gulmarg in Winter

Now all of the above was about reaching Gulmarg in the Summer season. In winter, however, it is an entirely different story. All of Gulmarg gets buried under several feet of snow and so does the road leading here.

It then becomes impossible for a normal car to climb up the final stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. During this time, only 4×4 vehicles ply on this route, and that too with snow chains.

In winter, my advice would be that you do not bring your own vehicle. You can then just catch a cab from Srinagar to Tangmarg first and then another 4×4 cab from Tangmarg to Gulmarg.

If you bring your own car or motorcycle, it will then become a problem about where to leave it parked because you may not be able to get it all the way to Gulmarg.

A 4×4 cab with snow chains from Tangmarg will cost Rs. 1500 for a drop and Rs. 2000 for a return journey. For more details on this topic, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Gulmarg in Winter .

How to reach Gulmarg by Flight

Srinagar Airport is the nearest airport to Gulmarg. It is located about 60 kilometers from Gulmarg and the journey can be completed in 2 to 3 hours.

The major airlines operating regular flights to Srinagar are Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet, Air Asia, and IndiGo. From Srinagar, you will have to travel to Gulmarg by road.

How to reach Gulmarg by Train

Srinagar railway station is the nearest railway line to Gulmarg. The problem however is that it is not yet fully operational and will take at least another 18 months to 2 years for full connectivity.

Right now, you can reach Udhampur by train. From Udhampur, you will then have to board a bus or taxi for Ramban. After reaching Ramban, you will then board another train from Ramban to Srinagar.

An easier way thus would be to just board a bus or shared taxi directly from Udhampur to Srinagar.

Weather of Gulmarg

Due to its elevation of 2,690 meters, the weather of Gulmarg remains either cold or pleasant. Summer out here is short and even in months like June and July, you will still need a blanket to sleep in for the night.

Summers in Gulmarg are usually enjoyable. The average temperature however ranges between 13℃ and 29℃ making it an ideal retreat to escape the heat of the plains.

Monsoon arrives here in July turning the meadows and valleys of Gulmarg to full lush green. It doesn’t rain too heavily here though and the average rainfall is very moderate.

Cold starts to settle in towards mid-September and temperature drops drastically. After mid-December, it can snow here anytime but it is usually towards mid-January that the snow starts to stick to the ground.

For most of January and February, the entire town remains buried deep under snow and turns into one of the most famous ski resorts in our country. The average temperature in these months ranges from -5 to 10 Degrees Celsius.

For a more detailed version of this information, please read A Month by Month Breakdown of Weather .

Best Time to Visit Gulmarg

I have actually covered this topic in detail in another article When is the Best time to Visit Gulmarg. But for a brief overview, the best time to visit Gulmarg will really depend on what is it that you are looking for.

Everyone’s reason for coming here is not always the same. Some people come here looking for snow and to catch their first snowfall. A lot of others come seeking refuge from the scorching summer.

A Photography enthusiast will be looking forward to getting some great shots. An adventure junkie will be focused on indulging in some snow sports.

If snow is what you seek then February will be the best time to visit. Spring season starts in late March and the months of April and May are great to bring your family around. Do note though that it tends to get a bit crowded here during this time.

If you are interested in photography then February, August, and September will be best. For someone looking for green valleys all around, July, August, and early September will do.

If you are looking for some solitude and want to get away from the crowd, then August will suit you the best. You must then avoid being here between April and June.

If you want to go skiing, the trip should be planned for January and February. April and September are the best time to plan a honeymoon. For a bike trip, you should avoid the monsoon season.

Clothes for Gulmarg

What clothes you should pack for Gulmarg too will depend on what time you are visiting here. For January and February, heavy woolens, gloves, woolen socks, mufflers, thermals, and a good quality heavy and windproof jacket is a must.

If you are visiting in March, some light woolens with a heavy jacket will do. From April till August, pack plenty of cotton clothes and a light jacket.

The months of September and October will much be like March needing some light woolens and a heavy jacket.

Your Gulmarg Clothing for November and December will be the same as for January and February; consisting of thermals, heavy woolens, and a windproof warm jacket.

Places to Visit in Gulmarg

Gulmarg in itself is actually a tourist place. This small town tucked in beautiful green meadows is a sight in itself and everything here is worth seeing. The natural beauty and the calm all around are the biggest tourist attractions of Gulmarg.

With that being said, there are a few places that can be called cherry on top. I will those down below.

I am only providing the names of these places below in this article. A detailed explanation of these places is provided in A complete list of Tourist Attractions . I kept it on a separate article because otherwise, this page would have gone too long and heavy.

What to see in Gulmarg

The natural beauty and tranquility of Gulmarg are its prime attractions. Beautiful lush green meadows all around and peaceful calm only broken by the occasional whining of horses is what you should be visiting here for.

Some other tourist attractions are mentioned below.

  • Drung Waterfall
  • Gulmarg Gondola
  • Alpather Lake
  • Apharwat Peak
  • Maharani Temple
  • Gulmarg Golf Course
  • St. Mary’s Church
  • Maharaja Palace
  • Children’s Park
  • Strawberry Valley
  • Ningle Nallah & Ferozpur Nallah
  • Bota Pathri

This is just a list of all the places. If you want to know more about these spots and their locations, please read A Complete List of Tourist Attractions .

What to do in Gulmarg

Below is a list of tourist activities that you can enjoy in Gulmarg.

  • Gondola Ride
  • Playing Golf
  • Winter Sports in Gulmarg
  • Winter Festival’

Apart from enjoying the natural beauty of the place and spending some time in peace, there are three major activities that you can indulge yourself in at Gulmarg.

The first one is the Gondola ride which is the biggest attraction of Gulmarg. The second is trekking.  A trek to Alpather Lake from Gondola Phase 2 station is the shortest one.

If you are in for more adventure and are physically fit, then you can trek to the lake all the way from Gulmarg itself. There are in fact several other trek routes from Gulmarg if you have the time.

For more details on Gulmarg Gondola and Alpather Lake, please read How to Plan a Gondola Ride and How to Trek to Alpather Lake .

If you arrived here in winter though, then skiing is what you should be doing in Gulmarg. Options here are available for experts as well as someone completely new.

Where to stay in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is one of the major tourist attractions of our country. Come winter, this town turns into a major ski resort. In spring and during summer vacation in schools, families flock here to enjoy the famous gondola ride.

Tourists continue to arrive post-monsoon to enjoy the greenery of the place. It is in short a year-round magnet for tourists. Due to this, hotels are available here in plenty.

In fact, you will see more hotels here than houses. There is one called Hotel Affarwat that I can tell you is good. I stayed at this hotel for a couple of days and the service was good.

There is another one called Pine View Resort that I know to be good from a friend. If you are looking for budgeted accommodation, try Hotel Green Park.

Finding a budget hotel is not really an option in Gulmarg. Overall, no hotel will charge you less than Rs. 2000 – Rs. 2500 for a room during the off-season. During the peak tourist season, these prices go even higher.

You can try calling Hotel Green Park and negotiating the price though. I was able to stay here for Rs. 1200 a day.

Other than this, the only other budget hotel that I know of is Hotel Pine View where you can get a hotel for Rs. 1200 per day but it is located at Tangmarg, about 14 kilometers away from Gulmarg.

Whether or not to book in advance is completely your choice. In the off-season, you don’t have to book. Just arrive at the place, find a hotel per your liking, and negotiate an on-the-spot deal.

In peak tourist season, however, in the months of January and February, April till June, and then in October, I will recommend that you book your stay.

Gulmarg Sightseeing Itinerary

A minimum of 2 days is what I will recommend for sightseeing and enjoying other activities. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to travel from Srinagar to Gulmarg.

Gulmarg 2 Nights Itinerary

If you were planning to stay in Gulmarg for 2 nights, your itinerary can be prepared in the following manner.

  • On Day 1, start early from Srinagar and arrive at Gulmarg at about 9 to 10 AM.
  • Check into a hotel and spend some time visiting local places like Maharani temple, St. Mary’s church, Golf Course, Maharaja Palace, etc.
  • On Day 2, take a Gondola ride to the top of Apharwat Peak. Trek to Alpather Lake there and arrive back at Gulmarg. This will take an entire day.
  • If you do not want to go trekking, you can skip Alpather Lake and go on a drive to Bota Pathri and Strawberry Valley instead.
  • On Day 3, you can travel back to Srinagar.

One Day Trip to Gulmarg from Srinagar

If you were planning to spend just one night, below can be your itinerary for the Srinagar to Gulmarg one-day trip.

  • On Day 2, take a Gondola ride to the top of Apharwat Peak.
  • Return by noon, have lunch, check out of the hotel, and reach back to Srinagar by evening.

Srinagar to Gulmarg Day Trip

If you were however short on time, you can cover in a single day as well. Start early from Srinagar and reach Gulmarg by 9 or 10 am. Walk around the golf course and see places like Maharani Temple and St. Mary’s church.

You can actually also go for the Gondola ride if there isn’t a lot of rush. All this can easily be completed in one day and you can get back to your hotel in Srinagar by late evening.

Bank / ATM in Gulmarg

J&K Bank and Baramulla Cooperative Bank have branches in Gulmarg and provide ATM services as well. Gulmarg is a famous tourist town so banks here remain open and ATMs are functional always.

Medical Assistance

There is a small hospital in Gulmarg and you can also buy medicines from the local chemist shop. But for anything serious, the patient would have to be brought back to Srinagar.

Mobile Network in Gulmarg

Prepaid phones do not work anywhere in the state of J&K, including Gulmarg. If you have a prepaid connection, however, your phone will be as good as a paperweight.

But as long as you have a postpaid connection, no matter which network you are on, your phone will be working fine here. Data connectivity too will be good. Most of the hotels here have free Wi-Fi available with good data speed.

For more details on this topic, please take a look at Mobile Network in Kashmir & Data Connectivity .

Shopping in Gulmarg is all about buying Kashmiri handicrafts, decorative linens, brass, silverware, pashmina shawls, carpets, carved furniture, stone jewelry, freshly plucked tea leaves, and dry fruit.

For all of this, however, I will strongly recommend that you buy from Srinagar. There are no big shopping markets in Gulmarg and your choice of items will be a bit limited and so will your ability to negotiate.

What to Eat

Not just Gulmarg but the moment you set foot anywhere in Kashmir, you should eat only Kashmiri dishes. Below is a list of some foods that you can try.

Non Vegetarian Dishes

  • Mutton Roghan Josh
  • Gushtaba (soft meatballs cooked in natural yogurt, white curry)
  • Rishta (Soft meatballs in delicious Gravy, Red Curry)
  • Tabak Maaz (Deep-fried ribs of lamb)
  • Kanti(small chunks of meat cooked with a lot of onions)
  • Seekh-Tuji – Marinated and freshly barbecued meat pieces eaten with chutney
  • Grilled Mutton called Tilli or Tekh
  • Marzunga Korma
  • Shami Kabab

Vegetarian Dishes

  • Veg Dum Aaloo
  • Tamatar Zaman (Paneer)
  • Nundur Yakhin (Lotus Stem prepared in Yogurt)
  • Haak (Kashmiri Saag)

One thing you have to remember is that Kashmiri people are not too high on Roti / Chapati. Rice is what usually gets served here and hence the gravy of all these items is not thick.

Where to Eat

There are plenty of restaurants in Gulmarg that you can eat at. Just walk up to the main market and you will find shops all around.  You can also order at your hotel but I found going to the market and eating there a better choice.

gulmarg

Gulmarg in general is an expensive place. Finding a hotel here for anywhere under Rs. 2000 per day is going to be a task impossible.

Even the food here is expensive. You will be paying Rs. 20 for one single small Tawa roti at a very OK type restaurant. Veg, Non-Veg, Rice everything here is expensive so keep that in mind while you plan a trip.

Guides and Pony owners are a huge nuisance in Gulmarg. You cannot walk here 100 meters without someone offering you either a pony ride or to be your guide.

Guides have absolutely nothing to offer. There is no place here that you cannot visit without a guide. They will charge you only for walking with you and nothing else. You will be just wasting money if you hire one.

Pony owners are another nuisance. There is horse dung everywhere in the meadows courtesy of these guys so watch where you step.

Gulmarg Altitude

Gulmarg is located at an altitude of 2,650 meters, 8,694 ft.

You can get some small fixes done and punctures repaired in Gulmarg but for any major fixes, you will have to tow your vehicle back to Tangmarg and then toward Srinagar.

Petrol Pump

There is no petrol pump in Gulmarg but there are several as you drive 60 kilometers from Srinagar to Gulmarg. The one closest is at Tangmarg. Just get a tank-full done at Srinagar and it will easily last the entire trip.

Road Condition

The entire stretch of road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is a smooth drive. It is a double-lane road but traffic flows smoothly. The road from Srinagar to Tangmarg is a mix of average and good but from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, it remains in excellent condition.

Hi Nice and detailed information. We would plan to reach Jammu on 1st Dec 23 at 2.30 pm and back on 9th Dec 23 at 11.30 am from same Jammu Tawi Railway station. My plan is Jammu to Pahelgam – stay Pahalgam 3 N (as reached at night on 1st), will do sightseeing on 2nd and 3rd. On 4th check in to Gulmarg and stay 2 nights there – on 6th Checkin to Sonmarg and stay 1 night – on 7th Check into Srinagar and stay 1 night. on 8th Dec checkout and visit other places of Srinagar and evening left for Jammu so we can reach before 9 to 10 AM on 9th,

I do understand that hiring a private cab for the entire trip always would be a good option. I have the following questions : 1. Please let me know if the above plan is good and can be better or the best as per your experience. 2. Whether this time is good to visit? Can we experience of snow fall during our trip or I can sat probability of snowfall?

It is a good plan if you want a relaxed trip and do not want to move around too much. Snowfall entirely depends on the weather but yes, you may experience a light spell of snow if luck favored

Hi, Amazing blogs vargis. Keep it up. I have one query , I have friends car in Srinagar, it’s personnel car. If I take that to pahalgam and Gulmarg then still I need to hire local taxi for going to Auri, betab valley or I can drive by my Kashmir registered car.

Hi Hitender – No you do not. The problem is only with Srinagar taxis, not private vehicles

Hello Vargis – Planning a trip for 6 nights around May end. We are a family of 6 adults and two small kids (under 5 and 2 years). I was planning to do 2 night in Srinagar, 2 night in Gulmarg and 1 each in Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Will it be little too much? If I have to drop one of Sonamarg or Pahalgam which one would you suggest?

Hi Raunak – You can do away with just one night in Gulmarg, do not need 2. If you must drop one place, I will suggest dropping Pahalgam.

Thanks Vargis. So if I spend two nights in Srinagar, and one night in Gulmarg, should I do two nights in Sonmarg then? What would be a recommended itinerary for 6 nights? Reaching Srinagar airport in the evening on Day 1.

You can travel like this

1. Srinagar 2. Srinagar to Gulmarg 3. Sightseeing in Gulmarg and return to Srinagar 4. Day trip to Sonamarg 5. Day trip to Pahalgam 6. Srinagar local sightseeing

Hello Sir, Very informative indeed. I am planning to visit Kashmir with my family. My itinerary would be Pahalgam (2 Nights), Gulmarg (1 nights), Sonamarg (1 Nights), and Srinagar (2 night). Kindly guide me if car rental for 7 days would be best or should I book car for per destination basis. Because, for local sightseeing, local taxi needs to be booked.

Hello Abhishek – It would be best to book the same car for the entire trip. It will cost you less that way and will also be more convenient.

This is so informative Vargis! It is exactly what I was looking for. A question however, do you suggest hiring a cab for all my 4 nights of stay(2 in Gulmarg and 2 in Pahalgam). Or I should just take a drop in Gulmarg and then one from Gulmarg to Pahalgam and then to airport?

Thank you Varnika. Hiring one cab for the entire trip will be cost-efficient otherwise you will end up paying more.

I am planning Gulmarg on 1st week Sept 2019. Can I see any snow on phase 2?

' src=

Dear Mr Khan One of the best articles even seen with honest views by the writer.

We intend to plan a visit on last week of June, 2019. How will be the weather? is it advisable to come in June? What are the activities for kids? What is strawberry valley..

Thank you Mr. Jain. June is a good time to go with pleasant weather. Gondola ride can be a fun thing for kids. Strawberry valley is nothing but a small corner of the town where they grow strawberries in harvest season. Otherwise it is just a piece of land.

' src=

Mr. Khan I just want to know what is average cost of spending 4 nights and 5 days in gulmarg by a couple with all food, hotel, sightseeing and transportation cost.

Mr. Saxena – Everything in Gulmarg is costly. It will come out to be around Rs. 4000 – Rs. 5000 per day in Gulmarg for 2 people including all costs.

' src=

I am planning Gulmarg, pahalgam, so marg and srinagar trip from 15th to 22nd Feb 2019. We will be travelling with our 2yr kid. Could you please suggest something, regarding weather, things we need to follow, all the above destinations will be open, is there will be any oxygen issue. It will be really helpful if you can help me to send me a plan.

It has already snowed in Gulmarg and temperature last week was at -5. So you much pack accordingly. Sonamarg will be closed so you cannot go there. Hard to predict about Gulmarg whether or not it will be open, depends on the weather and the amount of snow. Pahalgam will remain open though.

' src=

Hi Great article! ! Wanted to check how will be Gulmarg in 2nd week of December and how is the road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is it hilly throughout?

Thank you 🙂 . It has already started to snow there last week so it is going to be very cold. Srinagar to Tangmarg is mostly a flat road. Only the last 15 kilometers is a steep climb.

Great Thanks

you are welcome

Vargis, I have seen many articles about places around the world, written by experts and travelers alike – but this article is one of the best I’ve read ever. It’s so detailed, yet simple and so descriptive yet clear. I am happy to have stumbled upon this gem. Thanks for taking the effort to put this down so well.

After all this info, I feel totally prepared for mybuocmomy trip to Gulmarg in a couple of weeks! 🙂

Thanks Jay. I am glad that the information posted was of help and appreciate you taking the time to drop a note. It has already snowed in Gulmarg. Last week the final stretch of 15 kilometers between Tangmarg to Gulmarg shut down and electricity gone for 3-4 days. So please pack and prepare accordingly.

And also, do let me know how your trip went after you return.

Once you arrive at the domestic terminal, you will board a short 90-minute flight to Srinagar International Airport (SXR). When you arrive, please fill in a visitor information form which will be provided by local airport staff. Our private transfer will meet you with our sign, from there, Gulmarg is just 50km by road.

Before you start your journey, make sure you print all international and domestic flight itineraries or have screen shots ready on your mobile device – you will need to present these details before you can enter any terminal for check-in. For more information, please visit the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport’s website.

For domestic flights within India to Srinagar Airport (SXR) our favourites are Air India , Jet Airways , IndiGo and GoAir .

TRAVEL TO GULMARG

Gulmarg temperature and when to visit

India is located in the northern hemisphere and therefore enjoys a similar climate and season as Europe and America. The Gulmarg snow season begins in December and extends till April. However, the period between January and March will provide the most reliable and consistent snowfall.

Here are the current weather conditions and the Gulmarg Snow Forecast for today:

Below are the conditions you can expect during the season.

Keep in mind that even though we’d like to, we don’t control the weather!

Gulmarg Temperature & Precipitaiton @ 2,600m

January Significant snowfall with fine, light champagne powder. The snowpack is shallow, accompanied by heavy storms and cold, dry conditions. Tree-riding is possible, providing there is sufficient snowfall. You will have the benefit of low crowds during this month.

February The heaviest snowfall, which does mean some epic riding all over the mountain, but also a higher chance of snowstorms that will likely close gondola access to the summit. This heavy snowfall opens the door to plenty of unbelievable tree riding, but you may miss your chance to ride the summit. You will also run into bigger crowds in February.

March March is the least busy and most underrated month. You will enjoy a deep, well-established snowpack with a few large storm systems producing moderate to significant snowfall. The snow is a little heavier due to spring conditions, but there is still plenty of powder to be found at high altitudes. Some of the below-tree-line snow has already melted by this point so you have limited opportunities for low-altitude tree-riding. However, the increasingly pleasant weather means that you will probably access the summit continually. You are also likely to have the mountain to yourself.

Where to stay in Kashmir

Your accommodation at the Khyber Himalayan Resort and Spa is our pinnacle experience in Kashmir.

The Khyber Himalayan Resort and Spa opened its doors in 2013 as the first Five-star hotel in Gulmarg. The property works with an independent international hotel management company to guarantees professional service and ensures the consistent delivery of amenities such as 24-hour heating and hot water.

The hotel combines authentic Kashmiri tradition with Arabian influences, which tastefully echo the country’s Silk Road heritage and Ottoman history. Thoughtful touches such as Persian lamps and interiors that are intricately carved in the style of Kashmiri houseboats are a constant reminder of the country’s rich culture.

A casual après-ski café is the perfect place to unwind after a long day on the mountain with a cup of hot Kahwa, or traditional Kashmiri tea. For those who still have extra energy to burn off, the well-equipped hotel gym is the place to do so. Truly discerning customers can enjoy luxurious treatments at the international-quality spa, or simply relax in the world-class cigar lounge.

The diverse menu includes the best of Kashmiri and Indian cuisine, made with the freshest local produce and organic ingredients. The international menu is also exceptional and includes a range of quality options such as Middle Eastern mezze, seafood pasta, Angus rib-eye steak and French onion soup. To round things off, comfort foods such as scones, sandwiches and fish-and-chips are perfect for a quick bite.

Accommodation

Introduction.

Some of our fly fishing destinations are beats that can be reached via a couple hours drive, making them the perfect daytrip. However, our signature offering is our fly fishing trekking expedition, which combines a multi-day trek with various stops at key points – glacial lakes, high-altitude rivers and countless small streams. These expeditions involve modern camping, which is both comfortable and a unique way to enjoy nature with your fellow fly fishermen. Our expeditions also include the last night in an iconic houseboat on Dal Lake or at the Taj, the oldest 5* hotel in Kashmir.

High quality equipment can determine your level of comfort or even safety. You don’t want to wait until just before your trek begins to find out – there’s nothing worse than shivering in a smelly sleeping bag inside a moldy old tent that doesn’t keep out the rain!

For K-Line, it’s all about quality, comfort and durability. We set basic standards of comfort that we feel our clients deserve and we provide specific information about the brands and models of all our equipment. We value quality, not only for your comfort but also for our convenience. High quality equipment is lighter and easier for our horses to transport, and more reliable for our use. It won’t do to have the stove breaking down when everyone is waiting for a hot meal!

Cleanliness and hygiene

Trekking does not mean sacrificing your creature comforts. The Himalayas holds the world’s third largest deposit of ice and snow, so there is plenty of water to go around, so to speak. K-Line is proud to provide warm showers during our treks. Yes, that’s correct – heated water coming out of an overhead shower with adjustable pressure. All of this is powered by the world’s most reliable source of energy – the sun.

As part of our leave-no-trace policy, all your shower water goes back into the ground, along with the 100% biodegradable and organic Himalayan soap. You can also use the same soap to wash any clothes at designated points in rivers or streams.

That’s right – your cleanliness will not impact the environment at all!

We use lightweight, modern and spacious tents that are completely weather-proof, with clever pockets, hooks and fly screens to make your life easy when you’re inside. Our sleeping bags are warm and high quality. For hygiene reasons, we also provide a cotton sleeping bag liner that is cleaned after every guest. You will also have a modern sleeping pad, optimally designed for comfortable sleeping on the ground. You will also be provided with a solar-powered head torch for use at night.

Cuisine in Kashmir

Our food is as fresh as the air we breath.

Good food is an essential part of travelling and during fly fishing, it can be the difference between a great experience and a life-changing one. Quality is the K-Line trademark and our cuisine is no exception. Forget the watery dal and stale rice that is the standard fare on virtually all treks in Kashmir – we have a great local chef who will ensure that you’re well fed throughout your adventure.

Since we travel to remote areas, we bring all our provisions for the entire trip. Despite these logistical challenges, our clients enjoy wholesome food and quality ingredients. Although our food supply cannot be replenished, we still create a nutritious and varied menu, alternating perishable and non-perishable ingredients throughout the trip. We also rely on staples such as rice, noodles, onions and nuts, plus a selection of herbs and spices. In support of indigenous industries, we often procure fresh meat from local shepherds. Indeed, we ensure that most of our fresh ingredients organic and are locally sourced. We also pass numerous lakes and rivers, so grilled trout is part of the menu when possible.

Feel free to bring any snacks along, but do remember to keep within our weight limits. We recommend nutrient dense, high-energy foods such as energy bars and dark chocolate, rather than empty calories such as candy and crisps.

Our routes are designed such that you are never more than a few hours away from water. Unlike many other parts of India, water in the Himalayas is very clean and rich in minerals. We drink directly from streams and rivers – all of which are fed by underground springs, melting snow and glaciers – and have never gotten sick. However, you can bring water-purifying tablets, UV pens etc. if you choose. Your tour leader will typically determine safe points to drink from and set strict rules regarding specific locations for washing.

A range of beverages will be available throughout the trip, such as tea, instant coffee, hot chocolate and cordial, along with milk powder and sugar. You can also bring your own sports drinks mixes.

Our sample menu

  • Oatmeal with cinnamon, raisins, nuts and unrefined cane sugar
  • Strong loose-leaf tea, brewed Kashmiri-style
  • An apple fresh from the orchard
  • Noodles with mixed vegetables
  • A handful of almonds and dried coconut

Afternoon tea

  • Cardamom hot chocolate
  • Kashmiri bagels
  • Fresh tomato salsa with garlic and lime
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Roasted organic, grass-fed lamb (purchased fresh from local shepherds)

Traditional English trout recipe used by fly-fishermen from the 15th century

Gut ye the Trout. Take 12ozs of white breadcrumbs, 4oz apricots (roughly chopped) 4oz raisins, salt and pepper, 1 or 2 eggs to bind the stuffing. Milk teaspoon of dried mixed herbs. Mix all the ingredients together, but don’t have it too wet or sticky. Push all this in the belly of ye Trout. To make the salt doe that encases the fish. 3lbs of flour, 1lb of salt and some water. Roll it out. Put your fish in the middle and seal it up. Put it into a hot open fire until the pastry is black. Do not eat ye the pastry.

Houseboat cuisine

Our itineraries include a houseboat stay on the last night, to allow you to relax and freshen up before departure. The cuisine is traditional Kashmiri food – you might start with rista (hearty lamb meatballs in tomato gravy), braised Haq (leafy greens) and rice, followed by phirni (nut and raisin pudding) and kahwah (Kashmiri green tea). A great home-cooked meal before your flight home!

Terrain and riding in Gulmarg

Just 50km away from Srinagar Airport, sitting at 2,600m, lies one of the most undiscovered ski regions on the planet. The highest skiable cable car in the world will drop you well above the clouds, just below the summit of Mount Apharwat (Apharwat Peak) at 3,950m. Visible in the distance is Nanga Parbat at 8,126m (AKA Killer Mountain), the 9th highest peak in the world, Nun Kun at 7,135m and Harmukh at 5,142m. These are big mountains by any standard – this is, after all, the Himalayan mountain range.

Mount Apharwat provides an impressive platform from which to explore the surrounding backcountry terrain in Gulmarg. Once you exit the cable car, there are three options – traverse, skin or hike. Mount Apharwat has the perfect setup for backcountry riding, with its shoulders stretching some 6.5km wide and opening up to numerous untracked couloirs that run down the southerly aspect of the mountain. 75% of the terrain can be accessed via a short traverse, taking you to almost anywhere on the mountain within minutes. If skinning or hiking is your game, the summit and other terrain can be accessed via a short 30 minute skin or hike.

We have something for everyone, from strong beginners to expert riders. Depending on your skill level, we will choose from numerous safe riding opportunities each day. The terrain we ride in the alpine region varies considerably in terms of complexity, slope angle and general snow conditions. Your daily itinerary will be determined on the previous day by our team, based on factors such as ability, climate and terrain. For most clients, this is the biggest riding they will ever experience, with descents ranging from 800 to 2000+ vertical metres.

On days when the Gulmarg gondola is not operational due to heavy snowfall or poor visibility, the most incredible below-tree-line riding in the world opens up as you ride all the way down to century-old villages. At the end of each run, you will be picked up by our trusty 4WD vehicles. This is what we call “truck skiing” or “tree skiing” – this is a completely new way of riding for many of our clients, who will generally tell you that this was the highlight of their experience in Gulmarg.

After riding here for 11 years, we know that the terrain rocks. It’s pretty much a given that you will get the opportunity to open the throttle (safely of course) and enjoy some incredible high altitude riding on a daily basis.

Trek profile and terrain

The Kashmir’s Himalayas are vastly different to our neighbours in Ladakh and Nepal. With lush high altitude streams, abundant wildlife, flora and fauna. Below is the trek profile that also shows common altitudes and stops on our treks.

TREK PROFILE | Seven Sars: Sonamarg to Narayannag

Our expedition begins in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas in the small hill station of Sonamarg set amongst the Thajiwas Glaciers. Our fly fishing expeditions take fly fishermen on stunning, untrekked routes through the Himalayan mountains of Kashmir. The goal is to reach the some of the most abundantly fertile rivers and high altitude lakes in the world, known to the colonial British as Angler’s Paradise.

Those with the tenacity to complete our 12-day fly fishing expeditions will be rewarded with fishing that is unsurpassed. The fishing waters of Kashmir have not escaped the drive of capitalisation and sportsmen must travel to increasingly higher altitudes to enjoy the wilderness that made Kashmir an angler’s paradise. Fortunately, modern access to the famed glacial lakes has not been opened by modern transport and remains just as limited as it was a century ago and therefore these high-altitude fishing waters remain unspoilt.

Unlike our trekking expeditions, which move through locations more quickly, our fly fishing expeditions use trekking as a memorable way to reach our fly-fishing destinations. The goal is not to experience nature through different trekking routes, but to remain at each quality fishing spot for up to several days. Only a basic level of fitness is required and the pace of the expedition is determined by the ability of the group.

Ability and conditioning for backcountry skiing

Backcountry snowboarding and skiing in all our locations requires that guests have at least intermediate/advanced-level powder skills. If you are expecting to ski 50-degree shoots and huck 30-foot airs every run you will be disappointed. We only ski this type of terrain when conditions and group abilities allow. We want everyone to have a good time on the mountain where ever we are in the world. To increase your opportunity to ski and ride expert terrain, book an entire guide with like-minded friends and we’ll do our best to take you on our most exciting (but safe) runs.

Please consider the following notes before you book your trip to come backcountry snowboarding and skiing with us:

  • Guests will be skiing about 4,500 metres per day for 6 days straight at a peak altitude of 4,250 metres and need to be in good physical condition. Consider following a conditioning* program to prepare for your trip. If you are unable to keep up with the group you may be asked to sit out and will not be reimbursed for any missed time on the mountain.
  • Weather and ski conditions are impossible to predict so guests must be prepared to ski or ride anything.
  • If you have never skied powder or shy away from it at you local resort, our destinations are not the place to learn.
  • Our terrain varies according to the destination. In the Himalayas we ride 80% of the time above tree line in the alpine zone. In Canada we spend most of our time riding open powder fields and trees – please be prepared to ski and ride the trees!
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your ability please call us to discuss prior to booking.
  • We do not groom any of our terrain!

*Conditioning: In order to prepare your body for maximum performance in in the mountains and reduce your chances of fatigue or injury, we recommend you undertake a stretch and strengthening program 4 to 6 weeks prior to your arrival.

Ability and conditioning

Your fitness.

Each K-Line expedition is individually designed for a specific fitness levels – you can refer to descriptions within each package for more information. In general, if you are mobile, can walk unassisted and have no major health issues, you will not have any problems. However, it is best to prepare by building up your fitness levels as much as you can. Do whatever exercise suits you and your comfort level, whether this means brisk walking, running, yoga, tennis etc.

Altitude sickness

Visitors rarely experience serious altitude sickness and none of our clients have ever been affected. However, you may experience a lower fitness level than usual. We suggest that you build up your strength and fitness as much as possible beforehand and avoiding strenuous activity within the first 24 hours at altitude. Further measures include preventing dehydration, and avoiding alcohol and medication. Lastly, although it is not necessary, you can bring altitude sickness pills as a precaution.

Your physical conditioning

In order to prepare for your adventure in the mountains and reduce your chances of fatigue or injury, we recommend that you initiate or maintain an active lifestyle for a period of three months leading up to your trip, in order to get the most out of your expedition.

Culture and sight seeing in Kashmir

Through out the journey you will experience high altitude culture and hospitality of Kashmir’s mountain folk, along with experiencing numerous religious archaeological sites.

Health and safety

Hospitals in smaller towns and cities such as Gulmarg are adequate for basic or minor illnesses. Hospitals in Srinagar are of high international standards and that is where we will take you if any major medical issues arise. Kashmir itself is not particularly conducive to infectious diseases, because of the small population, low temperatures, high altitude and dry climate. Indeed, K-Line clients staying in our selected hotels rarely get ill. However, as Kashmir is technically under Indian rule, the CDC does have a recommended list of vaccines .

Health and safety - Fly-fishing

Medical facilities, medical evacuation.

All our treks and expeditions can be up to several hours away from civilisation, which is all part of the attraction. None of our clients have ever experienced serious medical issues that disrupted their trip. Indeed, our staff are equipped with first aid kits and trained to deal with emergencies. If you require medical attention, there are several options:

  • A staff member will accompany you to the nearest location where you can seek treatment. You will travel on horseback or by vehicle as required.
  • We contact a doctor who will travel to your location to treat you.
  • A staff member travels to the necessary location and brings back medication.

Travel insurance for backcountry skiing/Travel insurance for skiing in Himalayas

When in the outdoors, it’s always better to be safe than sorry and we’re sure you would agree. Get covered before you head out on an adventure with K-Line.

Travel insurance is your responsibility and is mandatory for all K-Line adventures. Please ensure your policy covers you for trip cancellation in the event that you cannot make it on your journey with us. It is also important to ensure that you’re covered for off-piste skiing or snowboarding and visiting remote locations, as Kashmir is one of the more remote states of India.

Throughout our years in the industry, we have researched the best in the game and Global Rescue is exactly that. Get the lowdown on Global Rescue’s Membership here

Foreign travel advisory for India

With the former political conflict just a distant memory, Kashmir has emerged as a remarkably popular tourist destination. Tourism has doubled over the past decade, with Gulmarg alone welcoming close to 2 million tourists in 2012. Located just a stone’s throw away from Delhi, it is the perfect sightseeing destination for Indians who make up the majority of tourists. Countless international tourists visit from Australia and Europe, while the neighbouring Asian countries of Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia are also beginning to discover Kashmir. Despite it’s increasing popularity, Kashmir continues to be a forgotten wilderness sanctuary with easy access and reasonable infrastructure.

Although foreign Governments are increasingly supportive of this unassuming little state of India, FCO advisories can vary on a yearly basis. In general, we have found such Government advisories to be overly conservative, as the situation on the ground in Kashmir has remained continuously safe over the past several years. Indeed, most of our clients are quite surprised at how safe, peaceful and welcoming their stay is, and end up returning to us year after year.

Time zone: UTC +05:30 hrs

Indian Standard Time (IST) is the local time in India. It is offset with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by +05:30 hrs.

Internet connections

The good news is that you can stay connected to your loved ones, your pets or your online aliases anytime these days in Gulmarg – and most of Kashmir for that matter. When you get back at the end of each day you can share your stoke over the web and tell everyone about what it is they are missing out on. So fear not, the internet is alive and well in Kashmir!

Power-up with the right adaptor/Electricity

Don’t get caught out in India without an adaptor! When you get to the international airport, pick one up in duty free before leaving for your domestic flight, or – for those who are super well prepared – get one before you arrive in India.

There are 2 configurations that can be used in India – Plug types C and D/M as displayed below.

What to pack for backcountry skiing

In India, we have a northern hemisphere winter and with the windchill in Gulmarg, temperatures can get down to -20°C. You will need to bring the appropriate technical outerwear and underwear to keep you warm and dry on those blisteringly cold days, and it’s particularly important that your outerwear is windproof and waterproof, with Goretex or similar fabrics to ensure that you are protected from the elements.

Layering your clothing is the best option for keeping you warm and dry on cold days, while offering flexibility to subtract layers as necessary when the heat gets going. We also do recommend bringing a second pair of gloves and goggles, just in case. Most importantly, don’t forget the appropriate powder-specific hardware for riding, including boots, boards, skis, bindings etc. Lastly, in addition to your typical technical wear, you will need clothes and shoes for lounging around in your hotel.

What to pack for fly-fishing

We know your fly-fishing gear is precious so we won’t prevent you from packing everything. The only guidance we will give you is to remember that our adventures are active fly fishing expeditions, so weight and ergonomics is essential as we need to be mobile.

As you will be at altitude, our summers in the north of India are mild during the day and cool in the evening. During the day ambient temperatures hover around 20°C. Luckily, this means packing light. We suggest bringing the appropriate technical outerwear and underwear to keep you dry and comfortable. Be warned – despite the beautiful warm days, the water temperature is very cold as we will be at altitude and as the lakes and tributaries are fed by visible glaciers. At night, temperatures can get down to 5°C, so it is important to come prepared as the climate is prone to sudden changes. It’s particularly important that your outerwear is windproof and waterproof, with Goretex or similar fabrics to ensure that you are protected from the elements. Layering your clothing is the best option for keeping you warm and dry during the trek or lounging around at the campsite. Layering offers the flexibility to modulate your temperature as necessary. Don’t forget the most important things – quality footwear to ensure you are surefooted during the trek and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) to shield you from the sun.

Sustainable fly fishing in Kashmir/Our fly fishing ethics

The high-altitude lakes of Kashmir are jaw-droppingly abundant, with our lead guide hooking in a record 10 golden and brown trout within 20 minutes. Decimated waters are a product of human activity and few anglers have experienced waters that are as abundant. It is easy to forget that fishing waters should actually be this well-populated with fish that regularly bite well-cast flies. The population has it’s own means of self-regulation, so do not be tempted to catch as many fish as you can. As visitors, it is our duty to ensure that these waters remain as they are for future generations of anglers.

We do not allow practices that disrupt the normal feeding patterns of trout, such as feeding them with bread and dead insects. Baiting an area to attract and retain fish is also not permitted as this eliminates the natural instinct of hunting. Shockingly, some operators actually recommend baiting the most desirable fish such as Golden Mahseer.

It takes just a few people to start a trend of unethical fishing. On an as needed basis, K-Line will teach correct catch-and-release techniques to ensure survival of the fish and maintain the natural population.

Target Species

Depending on the fly fishing expedition you have selected, you have the option of chasing high-altitude Scottish brown trout and rainbow trout or stalking monster Golden Mahseer.

Our Scottish brown trout and rainbow trout are our target species on this expedition style journey, typically found in the numerous high-altitude glacial lakes and gin-clear tributaries. Our locations have not seen anglers since the 80’s and are well populated as a result of limited access. The breeding season is December to March, so the ideal fishing season is also the warmest and most pleasant months of the year. Our trout fishing expeditions run from June to September.

The great Golden Mashseer is a completely different story. The fabled predator is rarely seen nowadays in Kashmir, with the exception of some occasional sightings. For the extreme angler, our Golden Mahseer Hunt is the perfect expedition to push boundaries. These ferocious predators are notoriously difficult to land and follow the opposite breeding season from trout. The ideal fishing period is therefore November to April, also the coldest months of the year. Your abilities as an adventurer and athlete, as well as a fly-fisherman, will truly be tested. As an added bonus, the falling temperatures mean that there will almost be no other trekkers around.

Kashmir's fly fishing regulations

The fly-fishing regulations that were established in the early twentieth century are still in place today. Any violations will result in fines or a revoked license. As an ethical adventure outfit, we support all of these regulations and have supplemented them with some of our own.

An angling expedition in Kashmir is all the more technical and challenging, as fly-fishing with wet and dry flies is the only form of fishing permitted. Artificial spinning and all other types of lures, such as jigs, surface lures, spoons, plugs, spinnerbait and swimbait, are prohibited. Primitive types of fishing such as casting, spearing, netting and trapping are also prohibited.

There is a daily limit of six fish per day per fishing license, and a catch-and-release policy does not exist beyond this. Due to the plentiful supply of trout, K-Line has supplemented this with our own rule – once your fishing guide has determined that the group has caught sufficient fish for that day’s food, catch-and-release will apply along with the minimum legal size of 25cm.
