Harihar Fort Trek – Updated Travel Guide with Photos

Harihar Fort trek is one of the Best Indian Treks in the Nashik District & most popular among trekkers. This Fort is also known as Harshagad because of its base village Harshewadi. It’s around 42 km away from the Nashik city and almost 50 km away from Igatpuri and Kasara, the nearest railway stations for trekkers coming from Pune and Mumbai.

Harihar fort is famous because of its rock-carved steps. Trekkers from Maharashtra and all over India give a visit to this fort to feel the adrenaline rush of this wild adventure.

This fort is one of the most important forts in Nashik district and is built during the Yadava dynasty period. They constructed Harihar fort to keep an eye on the trade route through Gonda Ghat.

Let’s see some quick facts before you go to Harihar fort trek.

  • Harihar fort trek under a minute

Why should you visit Harihar Fort?

How do you get to harihar fort, how much time needed to climb harihar fort, best time to visit harihar fort, staying overnight on the harihar fort, is harihar fort dangerous, harihar fort history, what to carry for the harihar fort trek, what to do after the harihar fort trek.

Iconic Rock Carved Steps of Harihar fort, Nashik

Harihar Fort Trek, Nashik – Adventurous route at the 1120m elevation

Difficulty Level: Hard Type of a trek: One day trek Best time to visit Harihar Fort: Winter Season, November to February Distance from Nashik: 42 km Base villages: Harshewadi and Nirgudpada The time needed to climb Harihar Fort: 2 hour

Harihar Fort trek is popular among the adventurous trekkers. You will get a huge crowd on the weekends. The rock-carved 80-degree steep steps attract many tourists and trekkers to this trek.

It’s a great one-day adventure trek and how can you forget the 360-degree view from the top of the fort.

Harihar Fort also has strategic importance. This fort is built to watch the trade route through Gonda Ghat.

There are few historical structures remain on the fort. You can see the Hanuman Temple, Shiva Temple, water cisterns and one storage house. There are many forts in surrounding such as Bhaskargad, Anjaneri fort, Brahmagiri hill and Utwad fort.

Water cistern and the temple on Harihar Fort, Nashik

Well, it’s quite simple. There are two different routes to go to Harihar Fort.

If you are coming from Nashik then Harshewadi is going to be your starting point for the trek. It is around 42 km away from Nashik city and it’s also an easy way compared to the other route.

If you are coming from Pune or Mumbai then you can start your trek from Nirgudpada . Nirgudpada is around 50 km away from Igatpuri. I am telling the distance from Igatpuri because it is the nearest railway station for the trekkers coming from Mumbai and Pune.

There is public and private transport service available. But I will recommend you to come with your own vehicle because then you will not have any time restriction.

Both the routes meet at a certain point from where you can start the further trek. So choose either route as it doesn’t matter.

First view of Harihar Fort from Base Village

You will reach at the starting point of the Harihar Fort steps after walking for around 1 hour. There are around 117 steps so consider a half-hour climb on the 80 degree steep steps. Thanks to the holdings carved on either side of each step that will help you climb. Don’t forget the principle of Three-Point Contact.

Once you reach the main entrance there is a turn to the left side. Take great precaution going through this narrow passage. After some walking, there are another set of steps which are more steep and inclined. Only one person can use these steps at a time. And after entering through the second entrance you will reach the top of the fort.

Highly inclined steps and narrow passage

To get a 360-degree view, you need to walk further for 10 minutes. And you can get an amazing view of the mighty Sahyadri range from the top of Balekilla.

Balekilla, Highest point of the Harihar Fort

Consider an hour to see all the places on the fort and then you can descend.

The best time to visit this fort is in winter season after the rainy days are over. You can come all year long but November to February are ideal.

Avoid going on the weekend because there will be a huge crowd of the trekkers. You can visit this trek in the monsoon season but the slippery steps will make the trek dangerous. Also due to rain and clouds, you will not get a clear view of the surrounding mesmerizing Sahyadri range.

Mesmerizing view of the mighty Sahyadri Range

Start the trek as early as possible to avoid the harsh sunlight in the afternoon. If you are an experienced trekker and if you know the route very well then plan the trek so that you can capture the beautiful sunrise from the top of the Harihar fort.

You can hire a local guide from the base village at an affordable price.

There is no need to take permission to do Harihar fort trek. You can spend a night on the fort in your tents. You can also stay at the local’s house at the base village.

Take proper precaution if you are going to stay overnight on the fort. There is a very weak signal available on the fort which is not reliable at all.

Yes, Harihar fort trek is dangerous if you act carelessly. Trekking is an adventurous activity so you need to be careful no matter on which trek you are going.

Harihar fort has very steep steps almost at 80-degree angle, which makes it one of the toughest treks in Maharashtra .

Many people go on Harihar fort trek in the monsoon season because of the amazing climate and surrounding natural beauty. Also in the rainy season, the slippery steps may cause an accident at Harihar fort. So avoid going to this trek on a peak monsoon season.

Only way to go to the Harihar Fort, Nashik

Harihar Fort is built in the Pankaj Panchariya (Yadava dynasty, Deogiri) period. As I earlier said, they built this fort to keep a watch on the Gonda Ghat trade route.

Initially, this fort was under the rule of Nizamshahi, Ahmadnagar sultanate. Then it went under the possession of Shahaji Raje Bhosale Maharaj. He surrendered the Harihar fort to Khan Zamam along with Trymbak and other Pune forts.

Moropant Pingale won this fort and brought in the Maratha Empire. After possessions by the many different local rulers, Captain Briggs captured this fort in 1818 and took it under British Rule.

People say that Captain Briggs wanted to destroy the fort’s entrance. But because of the natural beauty and amazing work of the rock-carved steps, he changed his mind.

Carry your water and snack. Even it’s a popular trek there are very fewer chances of getting any shops on the trail. You can get refreshments such as Lemon Water and cucumber. But it depends on the time and the day of your trek. Usually, there is a huge crowd on the weekend.

Please don’t through empty wrappers or plastic bottles on the trail or the fort. Remember, leave only footprints, not the trash.

Kudos to you! You have finished one of the most difficult treks in Maharashtra. Take a deep breath, mark it down on your trekking bucket list and pay attention because there are many other amazing tourist places in the area.

After finishing your Harihar fort trek you can plan to visit Bhaskargad which is nearby. Don’t forget to give a visit to Dugarwadi Waterfall. You can visit Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple in Trimbakeshwar. Harihar fort is around 14 km away from Trimbakeshwar, Nashik.

Anjaneri fort, Brahmagiri hill and Utwad fort are other popular places you can visit after your Harihar fort trek.

Maharashtra is blessed with beautiful forts and an ample number of trekking opportunities. Today, we have the best thrilling experience for you, the Harihar fort trek!

The Harihar fort, also known as Harshagad, is located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. It is located 40 km away from Nashik city and around 48 km from Igatpuri. This historic Harihar fort is at an elevation of 3676 ft from sea level.

Let us know something interesting about this place. From the base village, the Harihar fort looks like it is located on a rectangular-shaped hill but actually, it is built on a triangular prism of rock.

The Harihar trek is a 2 hours long trek with a medium-level difficulty. The difficulty increases in the monsoons. We know that you have been on a lot of trips and treks, but this is different. The major attraction of this place is the iconic steps to the fort. Yes, you read it right. The architecture of the steps is so beautiful that this part of the Harihar trek becomes an unforgettable experience. The steps are vertically inclined at an angle of 80 degrees.

Climbing these stairs is the most thrilling part of the Harihar trek. While climbing, you can witness mesmerizing scenic views. The last 200 steps are the most difficult but exciting ones. If you are scared of heights, then you would probably not want to look behind while climbing. But if you do so, you can see the most magnificent beauty.

When you reach the top of Harihar Gad, you will be astonished to see the scenic views surrounding the fort. Witness the 360 degrees panoramic view of the Sahyadri mountains. Best scenic views of different forts and hills like Bhaskargad, Anjaneri fort, and Utwad fort. A beautiful view of lush green landscapes and an aerial view of Igatpuri village. Admire the idols of Lord Hanuman, Shiva, and Nandi at the top of the hill.

The calm weather and lush green surroundings make this place perfect for all nature lovers. If this place is not on your bucket list, then add it now because this experience is something that you can't miss.

Harihar Fort, also called Harish Fort, is 6.43 km west of Trimbak and 1,120.44 metres (3,676 feet) above sea-level. Harihar Fort Trek is short yet tiring. The last 200 feet of the hike is a nerve-racking climb through steep rock cut stairs inclined at 80 degrees. The descent  is particularly exhilarating as you have to climb down and at one point face a sheer 500 ft drop. The architecture of the stairs is so diverse and outstanding and offers spectacular and occasionally scary views of the valley below. The fort is situated amidst the huge Vaitarna dam and the Trimbakeshwar mountain ranges offer stunning views of the area around. It was of substantial importance in earlier days to keep watch on the route crossing the range connecting Maharashtra to Gujarat.

Harihar Fort, also known as Harshagad, is a popular trekking destination located in Maharashtra, India. It is situated in the Nashik district, near the Trimbakeshwar region. The fort holds historical significance and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain range. Harihar Fort, also known as Harshagad, has a rich history dating back several centuries. The fort was constructed during the Yadava dynasty, which ruled the region from the 12th to the 14th century. It is believed to have been built as a watchtower to guard the trade routes in the surrounding region.

The fort changed hands multiple times over the centuries, with various rulers and kingdoms controlling it. In the 14th century, the fort came under the control of the Bahmani Sultanate. Later, it was captured by the Mughals, and subsequently, it fell into the hands of the Marathas, who held it for a significant period. The strategic location of Harihar Fort made it an important stronghold during wars and conflicts. Its vantage point atop a hill offered commanding views of the surrounding landscape, allowing its occupants to monitor any approaching enemy forces. The fort also served as a place of refuge during times of unrest.

One notable event associated with Harihar Fort is its capture by the legendary Maratha warrior, Shivaji Maharaj, in the early 17th century. Shivaji Maharaj recognized the strategic importance of the fort and included it in his extensive network of forts known as the "Shivaji Forts" or "Shivneri Forts." He reinforced the fortifications and made it an integral part of his defense system against rival powers. The fort's architecture showcases a combination of military strength and engineering marvels. The steps carved into the rocks, the rock-cut chambers, and the imposing fort walls are testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the time. Today, Harihar Fort stands as a historical monument and a popular trekking destination. Its historical significance, coupled with its scenic beauty, attracts adventure enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The trek to Harihar Fort allows visitors to experience the grandeur of the fort and immerse themselves in its rich past.

If you're planning a trek to Harihar Fort, here's some information to help you prepare:

Trek Difficulty: The trek to Harihar Fort is considered moderately difficult. It involves a steep climb and requires a decent level of fitness and stamina. Some sections of the trek involve rock-cut stairs, narrow pathways, and a vertical rock patch, known as "Nali," which adds to the adventure.

Trek Duration: The trek usually takes around 2-3 hours to reach the top, depending on your pace and the group's overall fitness. It's best to start early in the morning to avoid trekking during the hottest part of the day.

Route and Trail: The trek to Harihar Fort begins from the base village, Nirgudpada. The initial part of the trail goes through fields and gradually ascends into the forest. As you proceed, you'll come across rock-cut steps leading to the fort. The Nali is a challenging section where you need to carefully climb a steep rock chimney using iron ladders and chains. After crossing the Nali, you'll reach the fort's summit.

Safety Precautions: It's advisable to trek in a group and with an experienced local guide who knows the trail well. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and essential trekking gear. Wear comfortable trekking shoes with good grip, as the trail can be slippery. Since there are steep sections, be cautious while ascending and descending. Do not attempt the trek during monsoon as the rocks become slippery and it can be dangerous.

Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to trek Harihar Fort is during the winter and post-monsoon months, from October to February. The weather is pleasant, and the surroundings are lush green after the rains. Avoid visiting during the monsoon (June to September) as the trail becomes treacherous and risky.

Things to Carry: Carry a backpack with essentials such as water, energy bars, a first aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a raincoat (if visiting during monsoon), and a camera to capture the stunning views.

Nearby Attractions: Trimbakeshwar Temple, Anjaneri Fort (believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman), and Brahmagiri Hill are some nearby attractions that you can visit before or after the Harihar Fort trek.

Remember, trekking can be physically demanding, so it's essential to be adequately prepared and take necessary precautions. Enjoy the scenic beauty and the historical significance of Harihar Fort while ensuring your safety throughout the trek.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the Harihar Fort trek, from how to get there to what to expect.

How to Reach Harihar:

The Harihar Fort trek’s base village is Nirgudpada, in the Nashik district. Here’s how to get there:

  • By Train:  The nearest major railway station is Nashik Road. From there, you can take buses or hired vehicles to Nirgudpada via Trimbakeshwar.
  • By Road  If traveling by your own vehicle or a hired car, the route from Mumbai or Pune leads to Nashik and continues towards Trimbakeshwar, with a turn towards Nirgudpada.
  • Public Transport:  Buses ply regularly from major cities to Nashik and Igatpuri. From there, you can take local buses or shared vehicles to reach Nirgudpada.

Trek Routes to Harihar fort:

There are two primary routes to reach the Harihar Fort summit:

  • From Nirgudpada:  The most popular route starts from the base village, with a gradual trail leading to a plateau and then the thrilling steps.
  • From Harshewadi:  A slightly longer and less crowded route begins at Harshewadi village. It offers a more gradual ascent.

Food, Water, and Accommodation at Harihar fort:

  • Food:  Basic food stalls are available in Nirgudpada village. It’s advisable to carry your snacks and packed lunches for the trek.
  • Water:  Carry sufficient water, as sources are limited along the trail. Refill options might be available in the village area depending on the season.
  • Accommodation:  Limited homestay options exist in Nirgudpada or nearby villages. Camping on the fort is possible but requires carrying your own gear. Igatpuri has a wider range of hotels and resorts for those seeking more comfort.

  • Summer (March-May):  Can get very hot; early morning treks are recommended.

Remember…

  • …assess your fitness level honestly before attempting the trek.

Harihar Fort Trek

Harihar fort, also known as Harshagad is a fort located 48 km from Igatpuri. It is about 40 km from Ghoti in Nashik district, of Maharashtra. It was constructed to look upon the trade route through Gonda Ghat. It receives many visitors because of its peculiar rock-cut steps which offers a thrilling trek. It is referred to as Harihar gad or Harihar Killa in Marathi.

Harihar fort was built during the Pankaj panchariya period. Harish Fort was one of the forts in the possession of the Ahmadnagar Sultans. It was surrendered to Khan Zamam in 1636 along with Trymbak and other Poona forts. The fort including  Trimbakgad, Tringalwadi and few other forts were also given by Shahaji to the Mughals. The fort was won over by Captain. Briggs in 1818 along with 17 other forts. Harihar was one of the 17 strong places that  fell to the British rule on the fall of Trimbak in 1818 CE.

It lies at an altitude of 1120 mtrs on a triangular rock with all the three sides being vertical and impregnable. It has only one approach through a set of 117 steps staircase at an angle of 80 degrees. A storage house with a small entrance is the only structure left on the fort. There is a series of rock-cut water cisterns in the centre of the fort. Once on the top it takes about an hour to visit all the places on the fort.

The approach from Harshewadi is easier than from the Nirgudpada. A wide, safe trekking path starts from the hillock  to the north of  Nirgudpada. It passes through scrub forest till it reaches an open ridge which is connected to the fort. There are a few small rock patches that need to be dealt with here. It takes about an hour to reach the scarp of the hill on which the fort is situated. It is tricky to find the route in monsoons. The ascent through the 60 m rock-cut steps is a breathtaking experience. The rock cut steps are at an 80 degree angle and adds a sense of thrill to the trek. There are holds provided on either sides of the steps to ensure safety. One has to be careful of the monkeys here.

After reaching the main entrance, the paths takes a left traverse and again a helical rock cut steps are to be climbed, which are more steep than the earlier. The steps finally end with a narrow entrance. At many places the steps are very narrow that, only a single person can climb at a time. Accommodation is possible on the fort as well as in the local villages.

How to Reach

Harihar can be accessed from two base villages of the fort, Harshewadi and Nirgudpada. Harshewadi is about 13 km from Trymbakeshwar while Nirgudpada/Kotamvadi is 48 km from Igatpuri which itself is 48 km from Nashik and 121 km from Mumbai. Trimbakeshwar ca be reached from Kasara by bus or by private vehicle. One should take care of returning from the fort as the last bus from Trimbakeshwar is at 5:30pm to Kasara and the last train from Nashik is 6:35pm.

RAAHI TREKKERS Presents

Monsoon Special – Harihar Fort Trek

Event Overview

Harihar fort / Harshagad is a fort located in the Triambakeshwar mountain range against the huge Vaitarna dam. It appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village, Nirgunpada, and is located on top of a triangular massif with all the three sides being vertical and hence naturally fortified. There is only one access to the fort through a 200 feet high rock cut staircase inclined at 80 degrees. It is one of the most adventure trek in rainy season which doubles up the adventure. It takes 2-3 hours to reach the top from base village. The ascents are truly wonderful – picturesque beauty of the valley playing hide and seek as we gain height. Each turn that we take gives a different glimpse of the surrounding paddy fields, the winding Vaitarna, the distant hills veiled by thin clouds. The climb to the fort has intermittent plateaus which offer a resting place to the trekkers and a chance to breathe in the beauty of the silent valley.
