I left soon after Boston Manor played. BM killed it and had the entire crowd into the performance. The rest of the night was a little blaise. Loud music and an extra guitar doesn't always make for a good live show

I've never experienced a show like Have Mercy's before. Their songs have so much meaning and passion I couldn't help but scream the words with Brian. The show I went to happened to be on my 18th birthday and I was lucky enough to see the band afterwards. They are such genuine guys, they sang happy birthday to me and then and took pictures too. Thank you Brian, Andrew, Nick, and Aaron for taking the time out to make my 18th birthday memorable.

Have Mercy’s track-by-track guide to new album NUMB

Having previously revealed that Have Mercy’s new album NUMB was “influenced by my sobriety, new marriage, and repairing/disconnecting from relationships with people”, frontman Brian Swindle digs even deeper…

Have Mercy’s track-by-track guide to new album NUMB

From a “love letter” to their fans to songs about depression, sobriety and nostalgia, Have Mercy frontman Brian Swindle lifts the lid on the 10 tracks that make up the Baltimore band’s highly-anticipated new album NUMB…

“We’re always trying to have one song on each record that is a hard-hitting, hook-filled tune. I think Alive nails that on the head. It’s about preventing yourself from falling into negative situations. Sometimes taking control of a situation and doing what’s right for you is the hardest thing to do.”

“This is the title-track of the record and is really reminiscent of old Have Mercy. It has the quieter dramatic parts and the huge chorus, which is a theme in our older music. Lyrically, it may be one of the saddest songs on the record. It’s a song about depression. Feeling lost and like you’re not able to convey the things you want.”

“Hey is a love letter that we wanted to give our fans. Getting to tell them, ‘God, I love you,’ in a song was one of the best ways I could communicate it.”

have mercy uk tour

“Friday is a song filled with nostalgia and lust. It’s looking back on the times in your life where life was driving around with the windows down, seeing friends every day, and falling in love for the first time. It reminds me a lot of The Place You Love on our second record. It’s the same memories for me.”

5 Big Surprise

“This song was literally a big surprise. We wanted to add one more song on our record and fill it out with an acoustic jam. I wrote the verses of Big Surprise a while back and needed to figure out a way to round out the song as a whole. I aimed for the Lewis Capaldi-type chorus. Bigger, belting. Lyrically, it’s about getting sober. Which I think is a constant theme on the record. ‘ If I give it up, don’t let you down / If I keep my truth, and stick around .’”

“This is a very That Thing You Do-type song. It’s got that same bounce but with a modern feel. It’s about being stuck in the middle of an awkward situation, not knowing how to feel, but continuing to make the decision to be there.”

7 I Can’t Stay

“I Can’t Stay is a deeply personal song. It’s about not wanting to better yourself in a relationship. Love is a team effort. In order to make things work, you’ve got to take a look at yourself and how your actions affect two people instead of just yourself.”

8 Sick Of It

“This song started as just a piano part that Andrew wrote and vocal lines that we took from an old demo. I think we took some chances with this song. Doing a lot of things musically that we don’t normally do. The chorus itself is very rhythmic and unusual but it felt right.”

9 Hit The Ground

“Hit The Ground is about taking a look at the things and people you have and appreciating what you have. Saying, ‘Don’t know why you’ve stuck around when it’s so easy to just hit the ground and runaway.’ It’s about wanting to be better for everyone who sticks by your side.”

10 Floating

“I really didn’t think Floating would make the record. It’s a very different song for HM and it took a long time to find the lyrics for it. I kind of took that feeling and put it back into the song. It’s about being lost. Mentally, emotionally. It ended up being a perfect way to end the record. Huge guitar and bass work from Andrew and Nick, lots of energy on the vocals, and the last note drags feedback to the very end of the record.”

NUMB is released December 8 via Rude Records

  • post-punk.com

Following their highly anticipated 19-date US tour, The Sisters of Mercy have announced an extensive Autumn 2023 tour throughout the UK and Europe. The iconic post-punk band originally formed in Leeds four decades ago continues to captivate audiences with their unique blend of dark psychedelia, metal, dance beats, and guttural growls, offering fans a chance to experience their powerful live performances.

In addition to their US tour, The Sisters of Mercy have already confirmed shows in Mexico, with a concert on June 11th, 2023, in Guadalajara at the C3 Stage and another on June 13th, 2023, in Ciudad de México at the Circo Volador. The band will then head to South America, with concerts on June 16th, 2023, in Santiago, Chile, at Club Chocolate, and on June 18th, 2023, in São Paulo, Brazil, at Tokio Marine Hall.

Following their South American shows, the band will perform two dates in London, UK, on September 22nd and 23rd, 2023, at the Camden Roundhouse, before embarking on their European tour. The European tour will kick off on September 26th, 2023, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the Paradiso. The tour will take them through various cities, including Utrecht, Münster, Esch-sur-Alzette, Hannover, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, and Köln. The Sisters of Mercy will also perform in Budapest, Praha, Würzburg, Stuttgart, Lyon, Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Madrid, Lisboa, Porto, Bilbao, Genève, Trezzo sull’Adda, Cesena, Zagreb, Ljubljana, München, and Wien.

After completing the European leg of the tour, the band will return to the UK for six additional shows, beginning on November 15th, 2023, in Bristol at the Marble Factory, followed by performances in Wolverhampton, Newcastle, Nottingham, Manchester, and Glasgow.

The upcoming tour promises a captivating setlist, featuring fan favorites, deep cuts, and critically acclaimed new tunes. Recent live reviews have praised the band’s performances, highlighting the stellar contributions of band members Ben Christo, Dylan Smith, ‘Ravey’ Dave Creffield, and, as ever, Doktor Avalanche.

Don’t miss the opportunity to catch The Sisters of Mercy’s smoke-machine-laden live shows during their world tour in 2023.

17 rock bands named after songs by other bands, including the sisters of mercy:, judas priest.

British heavy metal legends Judas Priest took inspiration for their brilliant name from the Bob Dylan song 'The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest' from his 1967 album 'John Wesley Harding.' The moniker was the idea of early Judas Priest bassist Brian 'Bruno' Stapenhill who exited the band in 1970 before they had laid down any recordings.

Deep Purple

Initially called Roundabout, the rock legends initially toyed with band names including Orpheus, Concrete God and Sugarlump but eventually settled on Deep Purple; taken from the 1933 Peter DeRose piano composition. The song was a huge favourite of Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother and she would often perform it on piano throughout Ritchie's childhood.

In 1988, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and the late-great Pat Torpey named their new band after the Free song 'Mr. Big', which appeared on their breakthrough 1970 album 'Fire and Water'. Mr. Big later covered 'Mr. Big' on their third studio album 'Bump Ahead' in 1993.

After being dismissed from Hawkwind in 1975 following an arrest for drug possession in Canada, Lemmy started his own self-professed "fast and vicious" band and took the name Motörhead from the final song he had penned for Hawkwind just a few months earlier, 'Motorhead'. Two years later, Motörhead re-recorded 'Motorhead' as the opening track on their eponymous debut album.

Originally called Paris upon their formation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1983, singer Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall and drummer Rikki Rockett wisely ditched their tame sounding band name in favour of 'Poison'; a nod to the 1981 track 'Poison' by glam metallers 'Sinner'.

The Scottish hard rock veterans were called the Shadettes upon their formation in the late 1960s but were unhappy with what they perceived to be a 'lightweight' name. They decided to hit a boozer to discuss a new name when 'The Weight' by The Band started playing through the bar's soundsystem. Upon hearing the opening line "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead" , bassist Pete Agnew suggested 'Nazareth' and the band agreed. The rest, they say, is history.

Danish rockers Volbeat took their name from the 1997 studio album 'Vol.Beat' by singer Michael Poulsen's previous band, the death metal act Dominus.

The Rolling Stones

Founder and original band leader Brian Jones gave The Rolling Stones their moniker after the 1950 Muddy Waters track 'Rollin' Stone'. The fledgling group played their first show as The Rolling Stones on 12th July 1962, at the famous Marquee Club in London.

The idea of former guitarist, singer and co-founding band member Max Cavalera, the Brazilian metallers called themselves Sepultura, which is the Portuguese word for "grave". Max took inspiration from one of his favourite songs, Motörhead's 'Dancing On Your Grave.'

Founded in Oxford in mid-1980s, Radiohead were originally called On A Friday in reference to their music rehearsal day at Abingdon School. When they signed a six-album deal with EMI in 1991, the imprint implored them to change their name and they ultimately took their band name from the song 'Radio Head' from Talking Heads' 1986 album 'True Stories'.

Washington DC punks Bad Brains named themselves after the Ramones track 'Bad Brain', which appears on their 1978 album 'Road To Ruin'.

Stefani Germanotta's stage name is derived from the Queen classic 'Radio Ga Ga'. Producer Rob Fusari claims to have been the person who coined 'Lady Gaga' in the mid-noughties when they worked together.

At The Drive-In

Influential post-hardcore noisemakers At The Drive-In got their moniker from a line in Poison's 1987 single 'Talk Dirty To Me' – "Cause baby we'll be / At the drive-in / In the old man's ford / Behind the bushes / Till I'm screamin' for more." The name was guitartist Jim Ward's suggestion shortly after the band former in 1993.

Formed in South Africa in 1999 as Saron Gas, the band ditched the name as their US label Wind-up Records noted its similarity to the toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound, sarin gas. Ultimately they settled on Seether after the 1994 Veruca Salt single 'Seether'.

The Sisters of Mercy

When they formed 40 years ago in Leeds, the gothic rockers took their name from the Leonard Cohen track 'Sisters of Mercy' from his seminal 1967 album 'Songs of Leonard Cohen.' The Sisters of Mercy took inspiration from Robert Altman's 1971 movie McCabe & Mrs Miller thats' soundtracked by three Leonard Cohen songs.

Stiff Little Fingers

Previously called Highway Star and The Fast, the Belfast punks eventually decided to call themselves Stiff Little Fingers after the 1977 Vibrators song of the same name.

Wisely abandoning the prospective band name Virgin Killer (a nod to the Scorpions), New Jersey thrash metallers Overkill ultimately honoured their other musical heroes Motörhead by naming themselves after the trio's 1979 album 'Overkill' and the single of the same name.

Panic! at the Disco

Although many people erroneously think that Panic! at the Disco are named after The Smiths' song 'Panic' and its chorus of "burn down the disco", former band leader Brendon Urie has said in multiple interviews that they take their name from a track also called 'Panic' by Californian emo band Name Taken. The song's lyrics read: "Panic at the disco/Sat back and took it so slow/Are you nervous?/Are you shaking?".

have mercy uk tour

Review by Gary Spiller for MPM

A constant touring force since we were all released from the restrictions of the pandemic The Sisters Of Mercy roll into the Westcountry’s largest city for the opening night of their UK tour at The Marble Factory.

It’s a well-oiled industrious machine that storms the stage in this one-time retort house constructed by the Bristol Gas Light Company. Nestling on the banks of the Feeder Canal, connecting the city’s Floating Harbour to the River Avon, there’s something connective with the area’s feel and this evening’s gig. Industry and music cosying up most comfortably.

Across the waters trains ply their trade at Temple Meads whilst the anticipation builds palpably with an eclectic crowd of goths, rockers and punks mingling and sharing the moment. First-timers, like ourselves, and the loyal faithful shoulder to shoulder in a welcoming sharing of the moment. From the moment TSOM first emerged from The Reptile House, Leeds back in 1980 an air of mysterious intent has shrouded sole remaining founder Andrew Eldritch; something that persists to this very juncture.

Oft lauded as “the Godfather of Goth” Eldritch, the renowned possessor of a delectably deep, melancholic bass-baritone vocal, frequently rejects this stature. In an interview in May ’97 Eldritch famously bemoaned “I’m constantly confronted by representatives of popular culture who are far more g*** than we, yet I have only to wear black socks to be stigmatised as the demon overlord.” For many, myself included, in the immortal words of Highlander, indeed, “There can only be one.”

Undergoing a most welcome resurgence Macclesfield’s The Virginmarys have accompanied The Sisters right across the length and breadth of Europe for the entirety of October and into November. Having just one day at home, to quickly catch their collective breath and regroup, following the previous show in Münster the hard-hitting duo could have been excused any signs of road-induced weariness. However, this is not how they operate, far from it. Kicking off with the brute force of ‘The Meds’ – one of three singles that formed last year’s ‘The Devil Keeps Coming’ EP – it’s a machine-gun paced onslaught throughout. Under a mop of blue hair guitarist / vocalist Ally Dickaty nods furiously to the aggressive percussive elements forcibly laid down by the titanic drummer Danny Dolan. Fret vertical Dickaty seemingly throttles the notes from his six-string charge.

The Marble Factory, similar in size to Cardiff’s Tramshed (though with the stage positioned on the shorter of the building’s walls not the longer as with the Tramshed), is pretty much rammed already. The battle marches on with the pulveristic darkened punk of ‘Into Dust’.

The tubthumping ‘NYC’, ushered in with a quirky southern groove, is the dynamics of The Stooges at their finest. Low-slung guitaring and hammer of the gods drumming appear to be going down well with the Wednesday gathering. Continuing to extract from their high calibre arsenal with ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’. “You’re a fucking liar!” roars Dickaty with the Jack-in-a-box angst with the calling card of tornadic elements wrapped about.

‘Running For My Life’ strikes headlong, Sabbath gone punk undertones, lightning strikes. Dolan gathers his senses for a moment as the tempo drops mid-track, even the most acerbic of volcanoes must relent. With a quickfire, rallying “Go!” Dickaty with his counterpart Dolan chiming the buzzsawing ‘You’re A Killer’ raises the stakes.

Latest single ‘Where Are You Now?’ caresses gently before its slow-burning fuse wire eventually engage with guttural screams from the very depths of Dickaty’s digestive system. The metal roof trusses, demonstrating triangular strengths, are tested to their limits. The satanic groove of ‘Devil Keeps Coming’, completing the trio of singles from 2022, hits the ground at full pelt. Dickaty’s northern accent breaks through the barrage.

Expressing genuine appreciation Dickaty thanks the crowd “[It’s] ace to be here, by far the largest fucking audience we’ve played to in Bristol for a long time!” The gothic punk of ‘Just A Ride’ explodes in a glorious fusion prior to ‘Look Out For My Brother’ rallies. Dolan looks at his partner in mania, to his right, with an assuredness that comes of a close working relationship. With its Franz Ferdinand-esque underpinnings ‘Bang, Bang, Bang’ stops clocks causing the skies to explode. This is what happens when over-caffeinated gremlins egress from constrictive tunnel confines. Continuing their successes out on mainland Europe The Virginmarys impress and have, no doubt, converted a good percentage herein.

In full flight The Sisters Of Mercy is a wondrous glory to behold, this is a moment in life well over three decades in coming for me. ‘Floodland’, a masterpiece in my book – let’s make no bones about this, was there for me as a go-to album at a tough stage of my life. Teenage years tend to be and this evening a crystalline mirror is held up afront and I’m re-acquainted with my seventeen-year-old self.

A writhing sea of dry-ice swirls upon the hour of nine, white spots pierce the miasmic murk somehow illuminating the crowd. Shadows run into the corners as a desolate bass-driven overture portent ruminates from the PA. An industrial atmosphere pervades, skittering footsteps, claws clattering upon the concrete floors. Anticipation heightens further, hearts pound harder. Shrill machinery is employed gainfully somewhere in the obsidian penetralia. A black clad legion awaits in patient expectation as neo-classical demons flit hither and tither.

The coruscating lights of the backline and assembled tech pinprick the blackened stage; suddenly the lights burst forth and the heraldic ticking of time itself escorts the band forwards. Grasping his mic tightly, in trademark stance, with both hands Eldritch sets the tone. Ordered up on Channel 9 opening gambit ‘Doctor Jeep’ pummels the senses and tingles the backbone. Suddenly it’s 1990 once more; the outside world ebbs away to be forgotten for the next 75 minutes.

It’s well known that following a dispute with then record label East / West The Sisters haven’t released any new physical material. They do, however, offer their unreleased tracks live; ably demonstrated by taking the mechanics off the recognised scales with the deep grooves of ‘Don’t Drive On Ice’. Fresh food for thought but instantly and undeniably recognisable. Eldritch, statuesque, observes his guitar twins Ben Christo and, replacing Dylan Smith (following his Roundhouse exit), Kai from Esprit D’Air create a veritable avalanche. Out stage left ‘nursing’ the indomitable Doktor Avalanche Chris Catalyst makes a return to the Sisters’ touring ranks.

The sun rises above the horizon with ‘Ribbons’ craned off 1990’s ‘Vision Thing’ before the utterly unmistakable strains of ‘Alice’ plunder through the striking effluvium. Such were the foundations laid down in the radio session for the legendary John Peel in August 1982. New tracks continue to pepper the set with regularity and nestle amongst the fold effortlessly. ‘Summer’, obsidian in nature, sends rivulets of doom outwards whilst ‘I Will Call You’ detonates within a velveteen ether’; a sure and slow-burning fuse.

The sands stretch far away in the industrial classic merging of ‘Dominion / Mother Russia’ – the first reflections of ‘Floodland’ tonight – Eldritch laments of “A white house in a red square”. A harkening back to the chilling years of the Cold War. The Marble Factory pulsates clearly. Casting an ever-present silhouette Eldritch rings about the cloisters with the Germanic-electro overtures of ‘Marian’ rising above the maelstrom; across the water, across the wave. Briny emotives emanate.

Extraction of the rich vein noir is maintained to high grade levels with ‘Eyes of Caligula’ which follows an outing for The Sisterhood’s synth driven ‘Giving Ground’; seemingly echoing to the footsteps of the fallen. The undeniable kinetics of ‘More’ are supercharged, Eldritch’s hushed tones pitching “D’you get scared to feel so much?”

Fever pitch secured The Sisters pursuit remains starwards; with Kai donning an acoustic guitar to be applauded by Christo during their lead break in ‘I Was Wrong’. In the earthy depths the roots bind the soul as Christo’s solo howls lupine-like to lunar energies. Despatching the cranium splitting riffs ‘Here’ The Sisters stalk predatorily. ‘On The Beach’ haunts enthrallingly; all are willingly captive prior to the V8 muscle of the nitrous-injected ‘When I’m On Fire’ wraps up the main body of the set. An hour has elapsed in the cliched blink of an eye.

Structural integrity is severely tested as we listen intently to the roar of the big machine within ‘Lucretia My Reflection’, the lead track of a triple encore burst. Empire down, fire at will the bass line thuds crushing all before. Songs of the city enthral; we’ve got the city now. The crowd are completely on-point with the lyrics. ‘Temple of Love’, a defining track, lifts the roof with Eldritch emoting “And the devil in a black dress watches over.”

One last darkened pause and the culmination of magnificence is achieved by the set-closing exalted majesty of the ever-imperious ‘This Corrosion’. The Marble Factory erupts, rightly so. It’s been an evening to remember for many reasons; I’ve been immersed in a momentous passage surrounded by those similarly enraptured. A shared experience, that won’t be forgotten. Simply put one of my gigs of the year.
