If you’re looking for a Tennessee getaway that combines quaint small-town features with bigger-city luxury, look no further than Franklin, Tennessee.

Franklin has received national recognition including being voted as the “Greatest Southern Town” , “Charming Small Towns of the South”, and “America’s Most Romantic Main Street” , to name a few.

Settled about 21 miles south of Nashville , Franklin is full of history as it was the key site of the American Civil War ( book a tour here ).

Franklin also makes a perfect day trip from Nashville as it’s just a 30-minute drive away.

Before we ramble more about how great Franklin is, let us just show you!

1. stroll historic main street.

One of the best things to do in Franklin is to simply stroll the historic downtown with plenty of shopping and dining opportunities.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Locations and designated as one of the “Great American Main Streets,” there are plenty of local boutique restaurants, shopping, and scenery to enjoy. 

You’ll see Victorian-style buildings and vibrant shops, many dating back to 200 years ago.

Downtown Franklin also hosts a variety of monthly festivals and celebrations including Small Business Saturday, weekly farmer’s markets, October’s Pumpkin Fest, Dickens Christmas, and others.

Whether you’re looking to stroll and window-shop all day or attend a unique Franklin event, historic main street has options for all.

2. Sip On Wine at Arrington Vineyards

Visiting Arrington Vineyards is one of the most popular things to do near Franklin. This vineyard sits on around 95 acres, with multiple outdoor seating areas to enjoy the scenery with a glass of wine in hand.

Take a tour of the vineyards and then visit one of the five tasting rooms where you can sample over 21 different wines.

Arrington Vineyards is open from April-October, with food trucks on Fridays (starting in May) and live music every weekend. Pack a picnic or order a gourmet food basket from the Arrington-affiliated company Simply Living Life.

If you plan on staying a while, we recommend bringing a couple of lawn chairs as the picnic tables are first-come-first-serve.

Unfortunately, furry friends are not permitted on the property.

3. Franklin Hop Trolley Tour

Explore Franklin and learn about its history on a fun Franklin Hop Trolley Tour, which takes riders on a tour throughout the iconic and historic sites of downtown Franklin.

The great thing is that you can hop off at an attraction whenever you’d like (you can always get back on later!).

The tour often changes and explores new locations, but staple locations include:

• Downtown Historic Franklin’s Main Street
• Leiper’s Fork downtown village
• The Carter House
• The Lotz House
• Factory at Franklin

Depending on the time of day, you’ll have the chance to explore over 50 different Franklin locations.

4. Drive the Natchez Trace Parkway

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a scenic 444-mile parkway spanning from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, TN.

The Parkway has been declared a National Scenic Byway and has been voted as one of the 10 best biking roads in America . Along with biking, the parkway is also accommodating to motorcyclists and hikers.

Stop by one of the many picnic areas to eat lunch. If you didn’t pack a picnic, don’t worry as there are places to stop along the parkway to get food including in Leiper’s Fork. Read more about Leiper’s Fork below.

Or if you’d prefer hiking, The Highland Rim is a section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail great for hiking or riding horses. The trail is 20 miles long and allows pets.

5. Dine & Shop at the Factory at Franklin

The Factory is a historic building with plenty of things to do in Franklin under one roof including dining, shopping, and events.

Think of the Factory of Franklin as a superior-style mall but with dining options and events such as the farmers market (see above), shows & performances, live music, and the skylight bar, to name a few.

This would be a great thing to do in Franklin on a rainy day as the majority of activities are inside.

6. Bowie Nature Park

If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors and away from the cities, look to Bowie Nature Park as a free thing to do near Franklin, TN.

This park has over 700 acres of forest, trails, and lakes with many activities such as biking, horseback riding, fishing, and hiking as there are over 17 miles of trails.

Bowie Nature Park is also great for kids as it also contains an interactive nature center with access to free bike rentals. Check their website for hours & events.

7. Lotz House Museum

Known as the “ground zero” of the Battle of Franklin, you’ll have the unique opportunity to view the Lotz House and the damage it sustained during this horrific battle.

The Lotz family awoke in their home on the morning of November 30th, to find approximately 25,000 Union soldiers preparing for battle in their front yard.

You’ll be able to see the damage the house took during the battle from cannon balls, bullets, as well as blood stains on the floor.

There are a variety of tours to choose from such as a guided tour, battlefield tour, cellar tour, and even ghost tours.

8. Attend the Pilgrimage Music Festival

The Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival is a yearly festival hosted in the heart of Franklin, TN on a 230-acre farm.

This festival features multi-genre music such as bluegrass, alt-country, rock & roll, indie, jazz , and more, including a food truck park, and arts & craft vendors.

Previous artists include Chris Stapleton, Foo Fighters, Keith Urban, Brandi Carlisle, Dave Matthew, Justin Timberlake, and more recently, the Lumineers and Zach Bryan.

If you can’t find a babysitter — no problem! The Pilgrimage Music Festival is a unique and family-friendly thing to do in Franklin as they have a ‘Lil’ Pilgrims’ area for kids with arts & crafts, kid improv, magic shows, songwriting, and more.

9. Visit the Battle of Franklin Sites

The Battle of Franklin is known as one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, leaving over 8500 soldiers dead.

Thanks to the Battle of Franklin Trust, you can learn how the Civil War shaped America by visiting these 3 major sites on this guided Civil War History Tour which stops by:

Support local farmers of Tennessee by visiting the Franklin Farmers Market , hosted every Saturday from 8 am-Noon.

This Farmers Market has been providing the Franklin community with fresh and homegrown food for over 20 years. It now supports over 70 farms, helping the economy and assure a more sustainable future.

From fresh baked goods to fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meats as well as a select number of craft vendors — grab some fresh goods to take home.

11. Visit Leiper’s Fork

Just 15 minutes from Franklin, TN is an adorable village town called Leiper’s Fork.

If you have time, we recommend making a trip to visit the charming shops and stores this village has to offer. Including Leiper’s Fork Distillery — a small-batch whisky producer. You can book a tour of the distillery which includes a tasting of their products.

Other things to do in Leiper’s Fork include a wine-tasting room at Wines in the Fork , eat and listen to live music at Fox & Locke , visit an art gallery, and more.

Leiper’s Fork is located right off the Natchez Trace Parkway which means you could group these two things to do near Franklin together.

14. Walk or Hike through Timberline Park

Timberline Park is right off of the Natchez Trace Parkway at mile marker 437.2.

This park has over 70 acres of activities such as hiking trails, overlooks, a butterfly garden, picnic tables, and an interpretive center.

Hiking, bird watching, and wildlife observation are popular activities in the park. There are 9 different hiking trails with varying difficulties — the longest being the Nancy Conway Trail at 1.78 miles.

Dogs are welcome here as long as they are leashed.

If you’d like a challenge, SOAR Adventure provides a fun and interactive atmosphere for both adults and kids.

Climb the adventure tower that has 4 levels and over 110 different climbing elements , challenging you both mentally and physically. Or if you’d prefer to stay on the ground, they also have a musically-themed 18-hole mini golf course.

Tour 8 of Franklin’s Most Charming Historic Homes

Glimpses into the past can be found nearly everywhere in Franklin, Tennessee—from the bullet-riddled buildings that bore witness to the Battle of Franklin to the old churches and homes that testify to a bygone way of life—but the battle to preserve these historic structures was hard-won. After Franklin lost several significant properties, a group of citizens founded the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County in 1967 “to conserve the best of the past and to plan for the benefit of the future.” Since then, numerous buildings have been saved and preserved (including The Franklin Theatre and the Old, Old Jail), and the 15-block downtown district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

An award-winning, new novel Finding Franklin celebrates the rich history of this town while weaving a modern tale of mystery and romance. The author Katie Shands has compiled a list of her favorite Franklin historic homes, one of which makes an appearance in her book. History is just one component that puts this charming area on the tourist map. Within a 30-minute drive of Nashville, Franklin is close to the beat of the urban drum but far enough away to offer a quieter rhythm. Here in this Music City suburb, there's more country around whatever country music you might hear. Maybe that's one reason why celebrities make their home here or in nearby Leiper's Fork.

The Lotz House, built in the middle of the 19 th century, is where the Battle of Franklin took place. More than a collection of beautiful furniture created by German woodworker and piano maker Johann Lotz, it's a Civil War museum.

Carnton Plantation has had many incarnations since it was built in 1826. In its early days, the Carnton mansion was built by slaves, and the success of the farm was due to slave labor. During the Battle of Franklin (last day of November 1864), one of the bloodiest in the Civil War, mistress of the mansion Carrie McGavock transformed her home into the main field hospital for Confederate soldiers.

Take a deep dive into Civil War history by visiting the cellar of Carnton and viewing bloodstains on the porch. Pick from the following tours: Classic House, Battlefield, Behind the Scenes, and Slavery and the Enslaved. It takes one hour to tour the house and grounds. At Carter House, about a mile from the Carnton mansion, a once-in-a-lifetime event unfolded on November 30, 1864. While bullets and cannonballs pummeled their home, the Carter family hid in the cellar waiting for the gunfire to stop.

If it's hard to imagine what this was like for Fountain Branch Carter, the businessman who owned the home; his wife; and their 12 children, all is revealed during a tour of the Carter House State Historic Site. The bullet holes are still here, along with open spaces pierced by cannonballs. The battle was short, but the casualties were significant, numbering 10,000 dead and wounded. One of the Carter boys was a soldier who succumbed to his injuries in the house where he grew up.

Sightseeing tours 60 to 90 minutes long showcase the house, garden, outbuildings (including a one-room slave cabin and smokehouse). Explore the issues of slavery. Time at the battlefield underscores the contrast between five hours of face-to-face combat and quiet time to ponder the saga of that momentous day.

The road to Leiper's Fork, a rural hamlet less than 20 minutes from Franklin, is a scenic drive dotted by country estates and grazing horses. Celebrities are rumored to live in some of these homes, so don't be surprised if you see a country music star during your visit.

Normally what you'll experience here is Southern charm and Southern cookin', antique stores and art galleries, and whatever entertainment is happening. Special events include: Hillbilly Half-Marathon and Little Billy 5K in June, model airplane competitions in September, turkey shoots in November, and the "almost famous" Christmas parade in December.

On the National Register of Historic Places , Leiper's Fork is bounded by Joseph Street, Old TN 96, Old Hillsboro Road, and Sycamore Street.

Adjacent to Carnton House is the remains of the day following the bloody Battle of Franklin, less than two miles away. The two-acre McGavock Confederacy Cemetery, named for the family that resided here for generations, is the final resting place of nearly 1,500 soldiers.

The cemetery, located off Lewisburg Pike in Franklin, is organized according to states represented by the Confederate soldiers who lost their lives on the last day of November 1864. In addition to graves of 225 unidentified soldiers, Mississippi has the largest number of dead (more than 400) followed by Tennessee. Other states represented are Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Louisiana, Florida, and North Carolina.

The historic Natchez Trace Parkway "traces" the route of early travelers (Native Americans, settlers, soldiers, slave traders) heading north from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee. Access this famous byway at the award-winning Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, a concrete double arch that is 1,572 feet long. One year following its opening in 1994, the bridge was awarded the Presidential Award for Design Excellence.

Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge is 10 miles from downtown Franklin and within nine miles of the northern end-of-the-line near Nashville. The bridge crosses a wooded valley and features impressive views.

Close to the bridge, you can stretch your legs on 3.5 miles of hiking trails at Timberland Park . Located at mile 437.2 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, Timberland Park is just minutes from the bridge. The 72-acre nature park is home to deer, foxes, raccoons, and wild turkeys.

The Factory started out as an actual stove factory in 1928, then became an outlet for Magic Chef appliances, before it morphed into the Jamison Bedding Company. Today, through creative renovation and preservation, the 310,000-square-foot industrial and commercial complex known as The Factory has undergone the architectural version of a facelift. In 1997, it secured its place on the National Register of Historic Places while launching itself as a premier retail, commercial, and entertainment space.

Its 80-plus tenants represent a grand mix of boutiques, galleries, studios, cafés, concert halls, live theater venues, antique shops, and offices. Historic venues within The Factory include: Liberty Hall, the largest event rental space, often combined with the Heritage Room; the Jamison Theatre; and the Little Theatre, an intimate space fashioned out of a boiler room.

Franklin Farmers Market , open on Saturday mornings, is located behind The Factory, at the corner of Franklin Road and Liberty Pike.

Winstead Hill Park, located two miles south of Franklin, is a 61-acre historic battle site that commemorates the Battle of Franklin. More than a century ago, 23,000 Confederate soldiers gathered here under the banner of the Army of Tennessee. Whenever the temperature and wind conditions are right, a popular thing to do in Franklin for tourists is a balloon ride. West Tennessee Hot Air Adventures specializes in flying over the hollers (valleys) and hidden lakes of middle Tennessee. The company is a family-run business outside of Leiper's Fork, which is a cool place to visit while you're on the ground.

SOAR Adventure Tower is an amusement park featuring four levels with more than 100 climbing elements. The bottom level can be played by toddlers. With each level escalating in degree of difficulty, parents can help young children have fun while overcoming obstacles. At the top level, you'll need skill and concentration to nail mental and physical feats on barrels, swings, rings, tightropes, and cliff simulations.

Day and twilight passes are available. An 18-hole mini-golf course can be worked into your admission charge.

The Franklin Theatre made its debut in the summer of 1937 and had a 70-year-run before closing in 2007. After a multi-million dollar renovation by a non-profit preservation company, the landmark Art Deco theater re-opened its doors in 2011.

The 300-seat venue showcases all kinds of entertainment, including classic and current movies, community and private events, and live concerts. Among the artists who have performed here: the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Art Garfunkel, and Sheryl Crow. With a musical repertoire ranging from classical to country, and blues to bluegrass, be sure to reserve a memorable night out on Main Street by making the scene at the Franklin Theatre.

One of the largest of Franklin's many parks is The Park at Harlinsdale Farm, comprising 200 acres. This historic horse farm was the old stomping grounds for Midnight Sun, a prized stallion that was a World Grand Champion. The farm features a three-acre pond, four-acre dog park, three miles of turf track trails for walking and running, and an equestrian sports arena.

Less than three miles away is Aspen Grove Park . This 14-acre property features a paved trail (almost one mile long) beside Spencer Creek. Kids will flock to the playground while grownups set up a picnic in the sheltered area.

Gallery 202, Franklin's most famous art gallery, has lived and served many lives. Built 200 years ago for the Clouston family, it was an elegant residence known as Clouston Hall. During the Civil War, it was one of 44 hospitals that ministered to injured and dying soldiers. It also had a prestigious role serving three visiting American presidents.

Gallery 202 is still a home–to more than 20 painters, potters, sculptors, glass designers, and jewelry makers. Meet the artists, learn about their creations, and feel welcome to browse and talk shop. Antiques and fine art are housed on two floors of the gallery, which is sometimes used as a venue for live performance.

McLemore House is significant as a home and museum because it was bought by a former slave. In 1880, Harvey McLemore bought property from his former owner, a Confederate officer. In a neighborhood known as "Hard Bargain," the corner house with the white picket fence was home to Harvey's descendants for 117 years.

Now a museum, it tells the story of the McLemore family, and that of other freed slaves during the 1870s and 1880s. These people faced many challenges as they established their place in local society. Their "Journey from Slavery to Freedom" is told through panels and artifacts of African Americans who lived and fought to be free.

Learn about making goat cheese while your kids pat the goats at Noble Springs Dairy. Located six miles from Franklin on the way to Leiper's Fork, the dairy farm makes artisanal goat cheese and soap, as well as feta cheese and yogurt. Every goat on the Noble family farm has a name and forages on 230 delectable acres–more than the goats can manage!

The goat dairy and creamery has been operating since 2009 and sells products all over Tennessee. If you're visiting Franklin during the summer, educational tours are offered.

How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in Franklin

To properly celebrate all that Franklin, Tennessee has to offer, we recommend spending at least a week exploring our town’s storied history. From world-class restaurants to unparalleled live music to a downtown area chock full of Southern charm, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to Franklin. (We also have stunning farmland, vistas, parks, and  an Americana music festival , to boot!) If you only have a weekend to spare, however, you’ll need to be strategic in your plans to hit some of our favorite local spots. Here are three days worth of highlights you won’t want to miss!

All trips to Franklin, regardless of the season, should begin with a leisurely stroll down  Main Street . Stop in for breakfast at  Puckett’s Restaurant , a restaurant whose Tennessee roots stretch back to the 1950s. You can never go wrong with their Skillet Cinnamon Roll—a giant cinnamon roll baked in a cast-iron skillet with a healthy smear of cream cheese frosting.

After breakfast, take a few easy hours to peruse the shops down Main. There is something for everyone (and a souvenir for every interest) along the street, including clothing boutiques, vintage jewelry, a fascinating plant shop, antiques galore, and the iconic  Franklin Theatre . 

If you’d prefer to explore the history behind our downtown area, take a guided walk with a  Franklin on Foot  tour led by some incredible Southern storytellers. The company has been operating tours for 20 years and offers a classic history tour, a Haunted Franklin tour, a food tour, a Civil War tour, and more!

When you’re ready for lunch, stop by  Gray’s on Main . The former pharmacy has been transformed into one of Franklin’s most beloved restaurants and presents an ambiance just as special as your meal. Don’t forget to try the Bacon-Wrapped Figs which conveniently pair beautifully with their Anthem Spirit cocktail.

One of my favorite afternoon activities in Franklin is stopping by  Landmark Booksellers . In addition to their lineup of author- and illustrator-led events, Landmark features a large collection of rare and out-of-print books—the kind of bookshop where every nook yields a treasure worth discovering. They also have over 2,000 signed first editions.

It’s time for Happy Hour! Make your way over to  The Factory at Franklin  (a little less than three-quarters of a mile from the bookstore) to sip on cocktails at  Skylight Bar . The stunning, recently-renovated space is flooded with natural light and offers a thoughtful menu of drinks, including zero-proof mocktails. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m.

Pick up dinner at  Mojo’s Tacos  in the Factory—you won’t regret this vibrant lineup of tacos, nachos, fresh margaritas, queso, and even paletas. (Personally, I have only wonderful things to say about their Jalapeño Caesar Salad!) Mojo’s is a casual, family-friendly joint with a fun vibe. Whether a date night, work dinner, or anniversary meal, Mojo’s always seems to fit the bill.

Fuel your morning at  McGavock’s Coffee and Provisions  in  The Harpeth Hotel . This charming coffee bar and cafe has breakfast bites, on-the-go offerings, and even brunch cocktails to start your day.

Then, step back in time for a lesson in Franklin’s rich history. Take a tour at one, or all four, of the Franklin area’s Civil War sites.  Carnton ,  Carter House ,  Rippavilla , and  Lotz House  each offer an individualized and unique perspective on the events of the 1864 Battle of Franklin from both a broad historical overview and the experiences of families living in these historic homes on the day of the battle. Don’t miss the  historic African-American sites  around Franklin or the  March To Freedom statue  in Courthouse Square, which honor the experiences of Franklin’s Black community through our history.

Grab a bite to eat at  Franklin Mercantile  (fondly called “The Merc”) which features an enticing deli lineup of sandwiches, paninis, wraps, salads, and soups. Don’t skip out on a glass of their perfectly sweet Fruit Tea.

After lunch, try a trip down the Harpeth River with  Paddle Dog Adventures ! A lazy paddle down the river in either a canoe or on a stand-up paddle board is one of the best ways to explore Franklin’s natural beauty. Depending on the time of year, you may even want to try a trip out fly-fishing with  Franklin Fly Fishing Co . to “cast” away your worries. If you have kids in tow, you can also work some cuddly alpacas into your itinerary with a visit to  Mistletoe Farm .

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy the comradery of  Scout’s Pub  in Westhaven—a local, hometown bar with a menu that spans burgers, wings, pizzas, ramen, and even fish and chips. For a more refined dining experience, you may also want to check out  Coal Town Public House  in the same neighborhood; Coal Town has elegant cocktails and a charming outdoor area that overlooks the lake.

You simply cannot spend a weekend in Franklin without live music, so finish off your Saturday night by catching a show at one of the dozens of  live music venues  across Franklin and Williamson County.

On the last day of your visit, take a trip to the cutest village in all of Tennessee:  Leiper’s Fork . Start with a comforting meal at  Fox & Locke  in a historic grocery store—they’re open for breakfast on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The menu will have your mouth watering, with biscuits and gravy, hearty omelets, breakfast burritos, and build-your-own biscuit sandwiches. Don’t be surprised when you walk in and it feels like a world-class music venue, because it is—the stage at Fox & Locke continues to host some of the biggest names in music. After breakfast, take a stroll through the village. Make your way through eclectic art galleries, antique shops, and boutiques run by the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

When looking for beautiful views, few can match the serene beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains , a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains that runs through Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This town is the gateway to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, renowned for the mists that circle the mountain tops. Arrow Rock, Missouri

This village is a restored National Historic Landmark that provides a beautiful picture of the past. First founded in 1829, today Arrow Rock is a treasure trove of historic buildings to explore, such as the Shelly Log Cabin from 1830, the Masonic Lodge Hall and Craft Shop from 1868, and The Sanders AH Townsend House built in the Greek Revival cottage style in 1860. You can explore the town yourself on the Arrow Rock River Landing Trail or go off into the woods with the Pierre a Fleche Trail. There are also many museums in the town, such as the Arrow Rock African-American Experience Museum, which you can visit to learn more about the history of the area.

Slade, Kentucky

Kentucky is most well known for the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky, but it also hides many hidden treasures, and Slade is one of them. This small town is nestled in the Red River Gorge Geological Area, filled with sandstone cliffs, hiking trails, waterfalls, and more. The best site to see is the Natural Bridge, a natural sandstone bridge that offers gorgeous views of the surrounding area. Slade also hosts the Red River itself, which you can explore with a kayak or canoe.

For the truly adventurous, try out the Torrent Falls Climbing Adventure for rock climbing and rappelling. The Red River Gorge also provides ziplining over the trees so you can take in the views at high speeds.

Franklin, Tennessee

This charming Mid-Southern town founded in 1799 is filled to the brim with historic architecture and scenic locales to take in. The town of Franklin is most well known for being the site of the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, in the American Civil War. You can visit the site of the battlefield and see three historic homes. Downtown Franklin's Main Street has been called the Great American Main Street for its position on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you want to get a hike in while exploring historic buildings, make sure to visit the Marcella Vivrette Smith Park, featuring six miles of trails through the forests around the Ravenswood Mansion, first built in 1825.

Black Mountain, North Carolina

Located just outside of Asheville, the small town of Black Mountain hosts just over 8,500 people. Black Mountain has amazing views of the Appalachian Mountains and cute artsy boutiques in the downtown area. The trails in the area offer incredible views, such as Graybeard Trail, which brings you up the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Lookout Trail, which overlooks the Seven Sister mountain range. For a view from below the mountains, nearby Lake Tomahawk offers a half mile loop a short distance away from the downtown area.

No trip to Black Mountain would be complete without visiting its many galleries, such as Red House Studios, Seven Sisters Gallery, and the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. While enjoying the mountain views, kick back and enjoy a beverage at Black Mountain Ciderworks + Meadery.

Blue Ridge, Georgia

This mountain town in Northern Georgia is an ideal spot to hike, fish, or relax in the Appalachian Mountains. For hiking, Blue Ridge is close to 106,000 acres of mountains in the Chattahoochee National Forest. It's a fantastic spot for boating or kayaking on the scenic Lake Blue Ridge. Blue Ridge is known as the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia for its large trout population on the Toccoa River.

One of the best ways to see the area is to take the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway on a four-person electric Railbike. With this railbike, you can pedal through an 11-mile trip through the mountains. Before you finish your journey through Blue Ridge, consider stopping at Mercier Orchard to pick and eat locally growth fruit.

Mountain View, Arkansas

This small town of just under 3,000 people is a beautiful spot to visit in the Ozark Mountains. Mountain View is a mecca for bikers as it is home to the world-famous Syllamo Mountain biking trails, which feature several trails running for miles through the scenic mountain countryside. The area is also a fantastic place to go trout fishing, as the nearby White River has more than 100 miles of beautiful water to try your hand at catching brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. The best-hidden treasure near Mountain View is Blanchard Springs Cavern, featuring beautiful cave formations such as flowstones, stalagmites, and stalactites.

F rom small towns and state parks to some of the most exciting cities in the South, here are 20 of the best places to visit in Tennessee.

If you’re looking at a map of the entire United States, Tennessee is easily one of the most recognizable states. Shaped like an irregular parallelogram, it’s nearly four times long as it is wide — measuring around 420 miles from east to west and 120 miles from north to south. What the two-dimensional view doesn’t tell you, however, is that its borders contain a seemingly endless number of variations in both scenery and culture. “Tennessee is a perfect mix of urban and rural, casual yet sophisticated with easy proximity to the great outdoors,” explains Cassidee Dabney, executive chef of The Barn at Blackberry Farm . “Throw in brilliant musical and cultural heritage, fantastic high and low culinary destinations, and rich and diverse geography, and you have a state that will keep you entertained and engaged.”

Its largest cities — Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga — are on many travelers’ radars, but a true understanding of Tennessee can only be discovered through a more nuanced itinerary. “I think visitors here should get off the interstate to explore and go through small towns. Otherwise, you miss the local places that give this state so much great color and character,” says Tandy Wilson, chef and owner of City House , Nashville. 

To ensure your next trip to the Volunteer State is filled with well-rounded experiences and amazing points of interest, we tapped a few locals for advice on the best places to visit in Tennessee. Read on to see which cities, towns, and sights made the cut.

There’s no doubt Music City, suggested by several of our experts, tops the list. As you plan your trip, be sure to keep in mind some of Wilson’s favorite places to eat. He recommends the mac and cheese at Silver Sands Cafe — “I want real Southern mac and cheese, and this is the only place I know to get it” — the giant prawns and fried squid at Red Perch , and the nachos and wings at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint .

While Nashville has plenty to offer, there’s one part of the city you absolutely can’t miss: Broadway. “First-timers have to go honky-tonking on Broadway. Hit up Robert’s Western World for cold beers, fried bologna sandwiches, and country music,” says Dabney. David Mishkin, executive property manager at Southall Farm & Inn , also shares this is a crucial addition to your Nashville visit: “There's so much to see, eat, and experience. Country music is everywhere, and the performances are all high quality. It's difficult to not enjoy yourself when being immersed in the energy and action.”

“When I think about Memphis, I think about music, art, and beautiful historical architecture,” says Stephanie King , an artist based in the state’s southwesternmost city. This creative side of Memphis can be found in many areas, but King shares that The Memphian Hotel is a good place to start. “To me, The Memphian embodies so many aspects of Memphis in the most inspired, welcoming way. It feels as if the intention when designing the environment was to create pure magic. There is local art lining the walls, layers of colors and texture, whimsy and sophistication all rolled into a comfortable, home-like atmosphere,” she says.

The storied home of Elvis Presley, Graceland is located 12 minutes from downtown Memphis. A destination in and of itself, the historic property includes the King of Rock and Roll’s mansion, gardens, cars, and The Guest House at Graceland, where music fans can stay overnight to experience the resort’s dedication to luxury and Southern hospitality.

Make your way to Eastern Tennessee to cheer on the Vols in Knoxville. Or, if you’re not a sports fan, spend your day exploring the city. “Downtown Knoxville is a great area to park and walk around Market Square and the Old City. There’s a great farmers’ market on Saturdays in the warmer months that’s a must-visit,” says Dabney. Her ideal visit to the Cradle of Country Music includes stops at Cruze Farm , J.C Holdway , Yassin’s Falafel , and a spirit tasting at PostModern Spirits Distillery .

Leiper’s Fork

You’ll need to drive 45 minutes southwest of Nashville to find Leiper’s Fork, one of the most charming small towns in Tennessee . According to Mishkin, it’s a “charming place to grab some barbecue, do some antique shopping, and enjoy a delicious drink at the distillery.” Like many places in the state, it has a relationship with music. If that’s up your alley, check out Fox & Locke , which Miskin says is a “well-known place for people to come together for food, drinks, and live music.”

Chattanooga.

Of all the river cities in the South, Chattanooga is one of the best. “You have to visit Rock City and Ruby Falls if you’re in the area, and the art museum is great,” says Dabney, referring to the Hunter Museum of American Art in the Bluff View Art District. In between outdoor activities and cultural sights, you’ll want to fill up with fried chicken and tamales at Champy’s and wash them down with cocktails at The Rosecomb .

South Cumberland State Park

With 56 state parks, Tennessee is the perfect destination for those who find peace and happiness among the trees and fresh air. South Cumberland State Park is about an hour from Chattanooga, and it’s where you’ll find the Fiery Gizzard Trail. “It’s near Beersheba Springs and Old Stone Fort outside of McMinnville, and it’s just full of natural beauty. To tackle this hike, you need to be able to walk a few miles, but it’s one we take the kids on,” says Wilson.

Ocoee River

“Ocoee River Area is my favorite area in Tennessee,” says King. “You can whitewater raft, kayak, hike, camp, [and] bike.” Flowing northwestward through the Appalachian Mountains, the river can be easily accessed from Chattanooga. Many people choose to take advantage of the rafting, but the area can also be explored by driving the Ocoee Scenic Byway .

Walland might ring a bell because of its association with Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain . “You can hit Blackberry Farm for a high-end luxury experience with trails, mountain biking, a James Beard award-winning restaurant, spa, farm animals, workshops, and concerts,” says King. Dabney also shares her suggestions for the Mountain, saying, “You can’t go wrong with a guided hike to Leo The Enlightened (a large sculpture from Danish artist Thomas Dambo that overlooks the valley), sound bathing, spending an afternoon behind the wheel of a Lexus tacking the Off Road Adventure, and throwing clay at the art studio.”

Fall Creek Falls State Park

“ Fall Creek Falls State Park is another unbelievable spot for camping, biking, and hiking,” says King. Covering 30,638 acres, it’s one of the largest state parks in Tennessee. Along with its size, it has a few other features that set it apart, including interesting geological formations (caves and gorges) and scenic waterfalls.

It’s easy to overlook Franklin in favor of its neighbor to the north, Nashville, but travelers would be remiss to not spend at least an afternoon in this historic community. “Nothing beats walking down this picture-perfect Main Street on a beautiful day. With curated shops and friendly faces everywhere, we often spend our days wandering through town with the family,” says Mishkin. For a longer trip, stay overnight at the gorgeous Southfall Farm & Inn , which opened in late 2022.

Cummins Falls State Park

“ Cummins Falls is a great waterfall to visit, and it’s a great short hike in the summer,” says Wilson. Just make sure to bring your swimsuit along with your hiking clothes to the 306-acre park. “It’s just gorgeous here – it’s more socially recreational and a lot of fun and a cool place to swim.”

A small city close to Knoxville, Maryville is an excellent choice if you love all things outdoors. “Book a room at RT Lodge , a charming lodge tucked away behind Maryville College. You'll feel secluded while in the center of town, and they have a great restaurant and a gorgeous bar called The Morningside,” says Dabney. “With RT as your base camp, take a quick drive to the Great Smoky Mountains.”

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

One of the most-visited national parks in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is notable for its lush forests, wildflowers, rivers, streams, waterfalls, and incredible hikes. “My favorite hike in the Smokies is Indian Flat Falls . It's about 6 miles and pretty moderate with scenic waterfalls, plus you can turn around at any point,” says Dabney.

Gatlinburg maintains the title of “gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” so there’s a good chance your hiking trip will start here. There are three park entrances right in town, and Mishkin says the “immersion within nature is worthy of the trip.” “The history contained within remnants around the parks also shows how people lived hundreds of years ago,” he adds.

Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge has long been synonymous with Dollywood and Dolly Parton — whom King calls “an American icon and a Tennessee favorite” — and it’s filled with activities for the whole family, whether you’re interested in the theme park, shopping, or hiking in the Smoky Mountains. It’s also the location of Parton's newest venture, Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort , a 302-room lodge that opened this past November.

The Caverns

“The Caverns is another East Tennessee spot that offers great concerts, especially Bluegrass. There is one indoor, underground cave venue and another outdoor amphitheater,” says King. You can view upcoming shows online as you begin to plot out your trip. And don’t forget to bring your hiking boots, too. “Around The Caverns, there are trails, rock climbing, waterfalls, and stunning overlooks.”

Bristol, Tennessee is the twin city of Bristol, Virginia. Both states even claim the main street, aptly named State Street, as their own — allowing you to stand in two states at once. No matter if you’re staying on the Virginia side or the Tennessee side, there are a few important things to check off your bucket list, including snapping a photo with the iconic Bristol sign , checking out the Bristol Motor Speedway , and visiting the Birthplace of Country Music Museum .

Reelfoot Lake State Park

King notes that Reelfoot Lake State Park in Northwest Tennessee is “home to the most beautiful Cypress trees” and notable for its birdwatching opportunities with “more than 270 species of birds.” It’s also totally different than other parks in the state. The lake itself is a flooded forest, and the Cypress trees King mentioned rise above the water to set a majestic scene.
