You can now book a prison visit online

You can now book a prison visit online

Booking a prison visit should be simple and straightforward. Until now that was far from the case. Booking a visit required both prisoner and visitor to jump through hoops: paper forms and drawn-out phone calls. And if the visit date turned out to be impossible, they had to start all over again.

Now you can book a visit online . It takes about 5 minutes. Before, picking an available date was pot luck. Now there's a date-picker that lets you select 3 possible slots instead of 1. It’s a straight-forward service with user-needs at its heart but, if you get stuck, you can call the prison's visits booking line and someone will help you with the booking.

Here's a very short film we've made about it:

By making it easier to book visits, prisoners will see more of their friends and family. Evidence suggests this will help their rehabilitation. Transformation isn't just about websites.

The service was built by the Ministry of Justice, with a combined team from the National Offender Management Service, HM Prison Service and MoJ Digital Services.

How do you find out the prisoners number??? so you can go ahead with online booking of a visit?

Comment by Carrie Barclay posted on 24 August 2015

You can find a prisoner using this service: https://www.gov.uk/find-prisoner However it will be the prisoner's responsibility to get in touch with you to let you know their prison number etc.

Hi, If a visit is booked and someone cant make it, is it possible to change the name of one of the people to someone else?

Comment by Louise Duffy posted on 30 July 2015

It's best to contact the prison directly if this happens. You can find contact details here: http://www.justice.gov.uk/contacts/prison-finder

Thanks, Louise

Comment by Louise Duffy posted on 29 July 2015

You might want to get in touch with the prison first before booking a visit. You can find the contact details of the prison here: http://www.justice.gov.uk/contacts/prison-finder

Comment by Debs posted on 27 July 2015

Hello Is there a list of prisons where online booking can't be used?

Comment by Louise Duffy posted on 28 July 2015

According to the information on this page: https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits , you can arrange a visit to any prison in England and Wales through this service. If you're visiting someone in Northern Ireland or Scotland you'll need to contact the prison directly.

This link also lists the type of visits that are not covered by the online service: https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits so you need to get in touch with the prison directly.

Hope that's helpful.

So how do I find the booking form to fill in I am new to computers

Comment by Louise Duffy posted on 27 July 2015

Here's the link to the booking form: https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits

You'll need this information to complete the form:

prisoner number prisoner’s date of birth dates of birth for all visitors coming with you make sure the person you’re visiting has added you to their visitor list

Hope that's useful.

i have a visit booked which i did online but i do not have a visiting order woll the prison let me in?

Comment by Carrie Barclay posted on 11 May 2015

Your identity will be checked on arrival to make sure you’re on the visitor list.

Comment by jessicca posted on 27 January 2015

What happens after you book the visit and its confirmed by email do you need the visiting order ?

Comment by Carrie Barclay posted on 29 January 2015

The Visiting Order (VO) number is generated by the booking system, it is included in your confirmation email and you will need this to change or cancel a booking.

However, if you're visiting a prison the guidance is that you only need your ID, not the VO number. If when you visit the prison you are asked for the VO number you should report this via the Contact Us link on the Prison Visits Booking form.

I hope that helps.

How late in advance can I book e.g. book a visit today (Tuesday) for the Sunday coming???

Comment by Carrie Barclay posted on 19 November 2014

Hi Ilysa. Thanks for your question. A visit needs to be booked 3 working days in advance. So in this case, the visit request would have to be no later than Tuesday to allow for a visit on Sunday.

Comment by carole posted on 23 October 2014

How far in advance can you book visits

Comment by Carrie Barclay posted on 23 October 2014

Hi Carole. You can book up to 28 days in advance. Thanks for your question.

Built in 1985 as a young offender institution, HMP Stocken opened as a category C closed training prison. It has since expanded with new accommodation being added in 1990, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2011 which has significantly expanded our roll. In addition, new workshops were built as part of the prisoner accommodation expansion to ensure that Stocken is able to offer purposeful activity to all of the prisoners in our care.

Prison Phone have been saving inmates at HMP Stocken money on their calls from the prison to any UK mobile phone since 2013.

We do this by allocating a dedicated and secure local number to your mobile phone, this means when the inmate at Stocken prison calls the new local number we have provided they will be charged at just the local landline rate (around 10p per minute) rather than the standard mobile rate (which is around 40p per minute).

This in turn helps to stretch the inmates PINS phone credit further and reduces the amount you need to send in for them to top up!

Here’s some facts about Stocken Prison

HMP Stocken is a category C men’s prison in the parish of Stocken, Rutland. Opened in 1985, the prison has capacity to hold 842 male inmates.

All cells have integral sanitation. F wing consists 99 beds in a cellular accommodation (with three double cells). H wing has 130 beds and 10 double cells, for prisoners on induction. I wing consists of 78 beds and 14 double cells, for prisoners undergoing drug recovery. K wing has 130 beds in cellular style accommodation with 10 double cells, including space for the integrated drug treatment system (IDTS). L wing is a 202-bed cellular accommodation with 18 double cells. M wing is a 204 bed cellular accommodation with 20 double cells.

40 prisoners were involved in a scheme in July 2017 called MyBike , which involves restoring bicycles left at the community recycling center. The restored vehicles are then given to people in need of one for free to give people free transportation to and from school, training or work.

Visiting hours are 13:45 – 15:45 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and 09:15 – 11:15 on Saturdays and Sundays.

It’s one of the few prisons in the UK to have a ‘flat-pack’ wing, which was put together in modules in 2007.

Johnny Vaughan, the TV and radio presenter, was incarcerated at HMP Stocken.

In the past, the prison has been praised considerably for its ‘mutually respectful relationships between staff and prisoners’.

Prison Phone offers phone tariffs that reduce the costs of calls from this prison by up to 75%! This enables prisoners to get the support and love that they are missing from home, while reducing costs for the inmate. Find out more below.

TRACENET LEGAL SERVICES

Serving process hmp, hmp legal visits & serving process.

Home > Process Serving > Legal Visits Process Server

If you require documents to be served upon individuals currently serving within the Her Majesty's Prison, it is very important that you instruct a professional process server with experience in undertaking Legal Visits .

At Tracenet Legal Services we are regularly instructed to serve legal process upon individuals who are serving within the  HMP Service  and/or Police Custody. In these circumstances, a legal visit is required in order to attend the Prison and to meet with the individual as a Legal Visitor.

Although attending a legal visit is straightforward, quite often these visits can take a considerable time, especially when there are issues at the prison that may delay the appointment time or the process server in leaving. On average, the process of attending a legal visit will range between 1 and 1.5 hours. This would include the time required to clear security and vetting procedures.

It is also worth noting that prison visits become booked very quickly and so to avoid problems with service, we recommend contacting your process server as soon as you know about the requirement to serve the papers.

Also, the legal visits office may not be aware of the individual's release date or possibly that they may have been transferred before the appointment time, so it is always worth being prepared for these situations at the time of instructing a Process Server .

Finally, it is also important to understand that an Individual can refuse to attend the arranged legal visit. If that were to happen it would not be possible to continue with a personal service at that time and further arrangements would need to be made.

If you require papers to be served upon a serving inmate in England and Wales, please contact us so that we can advise as to the likely time frame and fee for service.

We would require that you have the individual's full name, current prison, prison number, or date of birth before we would be able to continue.

You can call us to discuss further on 0800 048 5684 or email us here > :

Work as a prison officer at Stocken Prison

We’re not currently recruiting prison officers at stocken prison.

We can let you know when vacancies open.

About HMP Stocken

Set in rural surroundings, nine miles from the market town of Oakham, HMP Stocken is a men’s  category C training prison in East Midlands.

Accommodating up to 1,056 prisoners, the prison provides a range of education and training opportunities for men to increase their chances of employment when they return to their communities.

Inside HMP Stocken

While at HMP Stocken, prisoners have access to a range of education, training and work opportunities. The focus of these is to help individuals develop new skills to reduce their risk of reoffending when they return to their communities.

Improving prisoners’ chances of employment

To increase their chances of employment, men can:

  • study part-time or full-time for a wide range of vocational courses including painting and decorating, catering, plumbing, bricklaying, and barbering
  • work in a number of onsite work areas including a DHL warehouse and in packaging, recycling, laundry and horticulture teams
  • gain work-related qualifications and practical skills such as timekeeping, teamwork and effective communication
  • attend the onsite employment hub when they’re nearing their prison release date so they can focus on getting themselves ‘job ready’ and looking at job opportunities in their communities

Working in partnership

The onsite gym offers health and fitness related qualifications for prisoners. Working in partnership with coaches from Leicester City Football Club, HMP Stocken is also a national pilot site for the  Twinning Project (opens in a new tab). As well as helping them develop coaching, communication and teamwork skills, the project also supports prisons to gain national qualifications in English.

Rutland County Council supports HMP Stocken’s bicycle repair workshop by providing bikes from local recycling centres which prisoners refurbish for donation back to the community.

Support for veterans

Through a partnership with The Royal British Legion and neighbouring barracks, veterans are able to access specific support to address their needs while in custody.

Staff benefits

As an employee of HMP Stocken, you’ll have access to a range of facilities and employee benefits including:

  • use of a free onsite gym
  • free onsite parking
  • excellent  training  and  career progression

This is in addition to the great benefits you get from being a part of HM Prison and Probation Service .

MP visits HMP Stocken one month after riot to discuss better support for prison officers

By The Editor

"Too often the work of prison officers is unknown to the public as it takes place behind the wire, but every day prison officers make our communities safer.

"One step in achieving this is to end the trend of concurrent sentences being handed out for attacking prison officers and I will continue to champion this in Parliament."

HMP Stocken's Governor Neil Thomas said: "HMP Stocken was delighted to welcome our newly-elected MP for Rutland and Melton Alicia Kearns to the prison.

"Alicia took time to meet with prison staff on the wings and hear about the important role they play in protecting the public and changing lives.

"All were left impressed by her knowledge, fortitude and compassion."

Find Stafford Prison on a map

There are no direct services to the prison, but buses stop at Sainsbury’s in Chell Road, only a short walk away. The bus station (Queensway) is also very close to the prison.

On leaving the station (Stafford connects to Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, London Euston on the West Coast main-line), you can either take a taxi or walk. Use the pelican crossing, then turn left and follow the road around into Victoria Road, keeping to the right-hand side of the road. Cross at the mini-island and take the pedestrian walkway (straight on) past the Crown Court. Cross the road into St. Mary’s Passage and follow the path, keeping St. Mary’s Church on your left. On entering the town, turn left at McDonald’s and walk straight through the town centre until you come to Queensway (The Ring Road). You will see Starbuck’s Café on your right. Cross the first three lane road (Pelican crossing) and turn right, following the path to the second two lane road (Pelican crossing). On crossing the road, turn left, keeping the railings on your left. Walk straight up Gaol Road, with the prison wall on your right. You will see a zebra crossing, nearly opposite the main prison gate. Cross over the road and turn left into County Road. The Visits Centre entrance is immediately on your left, in the large three floor building.

If you are using sat nav, the postcode to use is ST16 3AW. Leave the M6 motorway at Junction 14 and take the Eccleshall Road (2nd exit from the North and 3rd exit from the South). Follow the road for 1 mile and you will reach an island, taking the third exit for Town Centre. Take the nearside lane and turn left at the traffic lights into Browning Street. At the mini roundabout, take the third exit onto Gaol Road. Pass the petrol station on your left and the main prison gate will be on your left.

There is a small public pay and display car park opposite the prison gate.

Car park information:

  • up to 24 hours £4.40
  • Sundays £1.00 all day
  • disabled blue badge holders free
  • there is a pay by phone facility on the car park
  • motorcycles in designated bays free
  • there are 4 designated bays for electric cars with charging facilities

To plan your journey by public transport:

  • use Traveline for local bus times

Entering Stafford Prison

All visitors, aged 16 or older must prove their identity before entering the prison. Read the list of acceptable forms of ID when visiting a prison . This site provides more detailed information about many topics (booking, visits times, directions, facilities, dress code etc.) linked to visiting someone in prison, so we would recommend having a look, before visiting.

HMP Stafford operate a biometrics system to identify visitors. If it is your first visit, the PACT staff will explain the system, which requires you to place your index finger onto a reader, followed by standing still and having your image taken. You will be allowed to use a locker, to keep any unauthorised items which are not allowed into the prison. This includes items such as excess money, mobile phones, medication, shopping etc. You will be allowed to take your ID, locker key and money, up to the value of £30, to enable you to purchase refreshments, sweets etc. in the Visits Hall.

Essential medication can be taken into the prison. You must notify the Visits Centre staff that you need this. You will be required to pass the medication to the Senior Officer in the Visits Hall before you go to your allocated table. They will keep it safely for you, until you require it.

Disabled Visitors can utilise a toilet within the prison gate and adjacent to the Visits Hall. The car park adjacent to the Visits Centre has a number of designated disabled parking spaces. As the Visits Hall is on the first floor, disabled visitors may wish to utilise the lift. We have a number of tables which provide more space for wheelchair users. If you have a sight or hearing disability, please indicate to the Visits Centre staff that you may need assistance. We will be very pleased to assist you in any way we can, to ensure that you can gain full and safe access into and out of the establishment.

There are baby changing facilities within the Visits Centre and Visits Hall. We can accommodate pushchairs, however we would request that you do not bring large prams, given the lack of access and space within certain areas of the prison. If you are bringing young children or babies, we will allow bottles and dummies to go into the prison. Please ensure that you have necessary food and/or refreshments for babies, before entering the prison.

Once you have left the Visits Centre, please cross Gaol Road (via the zebra crossing) to your right. The entrance into the prison for visitors is through the door to the left of the main vehicle gate.

Once inside, you will be subject to a search by prison staff. They will explain the search procedures to you. It is similar to when you go to an airport, passing through a metal detection portal and a pat-down search. You may also be subject to a passive drug dog search, in relation to unauthorised items.

You will pass into the Visits Hall and be allocated a table, where your visits will take place.

Visits staff will give a verbal indication to you 5 minutes before the visits session is due to finish. We try to optimise the amount of contact time you have with your loved one, given the time and effort is has taken for visitors to travel to HMP Stafford.

At the end of the visit, you will return to the Visits Centre, following the same route as when you entered. Please ensure that you collect all of your possessions before you travel home.

Each adult visitor is allowed to take in a maximum of £30 to buy refreshments and food from the canteen.

Claim for help with prison visits

If you visit a family member, partner or someone who does not get other visitors, you may be able to get help paying for travel to the prison, overnight accommodation and meals. You can find additional information about this by emailing: [email protected] or via telephone: 0300 063 2100 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm or by writing to Help with Prison Visits, PO Box 17594, Birmingham B2 2QP.

All visitors to prisons must adhere to a strict dress code. HMP Stafford operates a family orientated visits policy. A large number of visitors are accompanied by children and we want to foster a decent, safe and relaxed family environment for all of our visitors. Our dress code reflects this aim so for example, see-through, revealing clothing cannot be worn, nor clothing that displays offensive, abusive or insulting words or gestures. Our staff will make decisions and judgements as to when clothing is inappropriate, taking account of decency and diversity. Further information about our dress code is available within the Visits Centre and via the Barnardo’s staff.

Standards of behaviour

Offensive, abusive, threatening words or behaviour towards staff within the Visits Centre and establishment will not be tolerated and may result in the visitor being asked to leave. Consideration will also be given regarding the suspension of future visits. Lewd or inappropriate behaviour within the Visits Hall, may also result in similar action.

There is a leaflet available within the Visits Centre, offering further details and information, linked to visiting at HMP Stafford. Please ask the PACT staff for a printed copy.

The Visits Centre staff will need certain information from you on arrival. They will check that you have a confirmed booking to visit, via the visits booking line.

All visitors will need to be given a pat-down search, including children. You may also be sniffed by security dogs.

Visitors should dress appropriately. You may be turned away if you are wearing items like revealing clothing or clothing with offensive slogans.

Each adult visitor is allowed to take in a maximum of £30 in coins (notes are not allowed). Refreshments are available to purchase in the visiting hall.

There are strict controls on what you can take into Stafford Prison. You will have to leave most of the things you have with you in a locker (you will need a £1 coin) or with security. This includes pushchairs and car seats.

You will be told the rules by an officer at the start of your visit. If you break the rules, your visit could be cancelled and you could be banned from visiting again.

Visiting facilities

There is a visitors centre run by PACT, Family and friends can relax, buy refreshments from the tea bar and get advice and support from the staff. There is a play area for children and baby changing facilities.

The centre is open from midday to 4:30pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

You can call the visits centre on 01785 773132. Find out about call charges

Phone calls

Prisoners do not have phones in their cells so they will always have to call you. They have to buy phone credits to do this.

They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call.

You can send emails to someone in Stafford Prison using the Email a Prisoner service .

You might also be able to attach photos and receive replies from the prisoner, depending on the rules at Stafford Prison.

You can write at any time.

  • are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
  • do not have a debit card

This will allow you to send money by post.

Gifts and parcels

Friends and families of prisoners are permitted to send books directly to their loved ones, or can order books from approved retailers, which can source and send the books on to prisoners.   For the full list of approved retailers, you can read the HMPPS Incentives Policy, Annex F .

All other property must be posted in. Prisoners are given a list of approved items that can be sent to them. Contact Stafford Prison for more information on what’s allowed.

Make sure to include the person’s name and prisoner number on the parcel.

Peace Through Strength? When Nixon Went to Moscow

Peace Through Strength? When Nixon Went to Moscow

  • Video: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...
  • Article: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...
  • Entry: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...

On May 22, 1972, Richard Nixon became the first American president to visit Moscow, the capital and largest city of what was then the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The nine-day summit came on the heels of Nixon’s more famous visit to China earlier in the year, when he and Chairman Mao reinitiated Chinese-American relations and began a long process of reintegrating the two societies’ political, cultural, and economic institutions. (Nixon, in 1959, visited Moscow as vice-president, something I’ll write about it July, so stay tuned!)

So why did Nixon, one of the most ardent anti-Communists in American politics during the late 1960s and early 1970s, go to Moscow at the height of the Cold War? How was he able to even pull it off? The counterintuitive answer is that it was because he was so hawkish. Only Nixon could go to the Soviet Union (and China earlier in 1972).

Nixon’s anti-Communist credentials were so sound that he could spend political capital making inroads with Communist enemies. His actions were viewed as safe by the American electorate because, for better or worse, the public saw Nixon as somebody who would not betray American values at the negotiating table with the Soviets. Nixon’s hawkishness provided moral cover for America’s withdrawal from Vietnam, and its peaceful overtures to the two most powerful and aggressively anti-capitalist regimes in the world (China and the USSR).

This dynamic plays out in a number of examples in the world today, too. Donald Trump comes to mind, of course, but so does Narendra Modi’s populist regime in India (relations between India and Pakistan have never been so peaceful). Xi Jinping’s China can also be viewed in this light. At home, Chairman Xi is a strident nationalist, but abroad, he and his policymakers have been vigorously building multilateral relationships with Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and even the United States using that hawkishness at home as one of its diplomatic cards at the negotiating table. In the past, Otto von Bismarck’s German federation achieved peace on the European continent through strength.

Anecdotally, Republicans from California tend to be a bit more hawkish than their national counterparts. Nixon and Reagan come to mind, but so do many of California’s GOP members in the House of Representatives today. This is due, in part, to the fact that California is so far to the left that GOP operatives have to distinguish their differences with Democrats in a more pronounced manner. California’s Democrats are, for better or worse, viewed as the standard-bearers for all things left-wing today: big government, open immigration (whether legal or not), and world peace. This is a caricature, of course, since people like Nancy Pelosi and Babs Boxer have easily traceable hawkish records on policies like foreign affairs, but that’s just the nature of electoral politics in one-party states and of the narrative of our media establishment. California’s Republicans, outnumbered and always under attack, have no other option but to oppose instinctively their counterparts’ public aura. If the Democrats there are in favor of peace with communists (even if their voting record says otherwise), the Republicans have to go to their constituents and say they are against it.

Nixon was the first president to visit Moscow. FDR had visited the Soviet Union in 1945, but the conference he attended, along with Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin, was held at Yalta, a resort town in present-day Crimea. The Moscow Summit itself was rather interesting, too. Nixon signed numerous accords with the Soviet Union while there, but he did so with numerous heads of Soviet bureaucracies rather than solely with Brezhnev. What this can tell us is that the Soviet Union was far more decentralized in 1972 than many hawkish (and ideological) observers claimed.

After Stalin’s butcherous rein, Khrushchev came to power and tried to eliminate the brutal elements of Stalin’s regime while simultaneously wielding the power Stalin had held. But power thrives on fear and violence, and reformers took advantage of Khrushchev’s less brutal approach to institute a number of reforms in governance, including the dismantling of the General Secretary’s omnipotent position in the USSR’s political hierarchy. What emerged by the time Khrushchev’s successor, Brezhnev, came to govern was a much more decentralized political structure that sought to realize a true union of Soviet socialist republics. The fact that this realization still failed to replace capitalism  as a superior producer of goods, services, and human freedom should not shroud the fact that reform was achieved in the Soviet Union. Indeed, the fact that hard-fought reform in Soviet civil and political life failed to achieve any of the USSR’s economic goals is a strength when pointing out socialism’s long list of failures.

Incidentally, one of the reasons I didn’t include Gorbachev in the l ist of dictators who “gave up” power is because he wasn’t a dictator. Gorbachev inherited a political system that was decentralized and dedicated to representativeness. If anything, the executive branch of the USSR was more decentralized than its American counterpart, a fact illustrated best by Nixon having to sign accords with a number of high-ranking Soviet officials.

So what can all this history teach us about today’s world? I look at hawks and doves. Hawks may make boorish claims, and they may say stupid things, but maybe, just maybe, we should give the hawks a chance.

Discover its amazing architecture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and incredible parks because this is one of the greenest cities in Europe, too.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Moscow?

Moscow is a cold city, and if you want to enjoy it fully while it is sunny, the best time to visit it is during summer. However, summer is the most touristy season , and the prices are very high, but the weather is very nice (from June to August the temperature is about 22° – 24°C).

In Moscow, there is more winter than any other season, so autumn turns cold really fast and the spring comes late. If you want to avoid the crowded season, you can visit the city from April to May and during the fall month of September, when the temperatures are more bearable. Winter in Moscow is snowy and incredibly cold, with temperatures of -10°C in December and January. But this is also a part of its charm.

A Few Facts About Moscow

Moscow really is an incredible city, and it has a high number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that mustn’t be missed when you visit it. Its historic buildings describe perfectly the colorful and nice Russian architecture, transporting you back in time. Moscow is also a key element of the political, cultural, scientific, and economic development of Eastern Europe, with some iconic buildings to prove this. These include the Red Square, the Kremlin, and even the largest bell in the world which can be visited anytime.

One Day in Moscow

Spending just one day in Moscow is not enough to discover all of its hidden gems, culture, and history, but it is still a great opportunity to meet this fascinating city. Visit and discover the most iconic places in Moscow and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.

Start with a Breakfast at Coffeemania (Kofemaniya Moss)

You have a great day ahead of you, so it is better to start it off with a good breakfast. Coffeemania is one of the most appreciated bars by tourists, especially because it is close to the city center. You can choose from a lot of breakfast options, including vegetarian or vegan meals. It is an excellent cafe with characteristic Russian design that makes the morning experience more enjoyable. There are two Coffeemanias in Moscow, one that is in a mall, and this one which is at 1.8 km from the Red Square, just 20 minutes away.

Admire the Red Square

The Red Square has been an important and iconic place for Moscow since 1400. It became popular and famous after all the military parades, demonstrations, and events that took place here. It is definitely one of the places you should not miss when in Moscow, even if you have just one day here. The Red Square is also incredibly beautiful, as evidenced by its Russian name – the Red Square translates to Krasnaya Ploshchad in Russian, Krasnaya meaning beautiful in old Russian.

Red square, Moscow

Soak in the Beauty of Saint Basil’s Cathedral (Khram Vasiliya Blazhennogo)

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic places in Moscow. Depending on the season, during the day it is very crowded because it is one of the most important tourist attractions. But if you want to visit it during the night, you won’t believe the combination of lights and colors you can see here. Saint Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its bright and colorful cherry onion domes, one of the most important cultural symbols of the country. It was built in 1552 and the legend says that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects. Why? So that they will not build another structure or replicate the existing one.

Saint Basil, Moscow

Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum is located in the Red Square and it is also known as Lenin’s Tomb. It became one of the major attractions in Moscow, especially because the preserved mummy of Vladimir Lenin is on public display. You do not have to pay for a ticket because the entrance is free. But during tourist season, you might have to wait in line at a queue.

Lenin's mausoleum, Moscow

Discover the Kremlin

The Red Square is a tourist attraction, not only because of its historical and cultural value but also because it is the place where the Kremlin is located. The Kremlin can be seen from the Red Square; however, it takes you 12 minutes to reach it on foot. This magnificent building was built between the 14th and 17th centuries and is one of the most important ones in the country.

Kremlin, Moscow

Kremlin means fortress inside a city, which pretty much describes it perfectly. Inside the Kremlin are five palaces, four cathedrals, 20 towers, and an enclosing wall. The Kremlin Palace , which is located inside the Kremlin is the official residence of the President of Russia. You can visit the Kremlin, and the ticket is around 700 rubles.

Relax in the Alexander Garden (Alexandrovsky Sad)

The Alexander Garden is one of the first public parks built in Moscow, right near the Kremlin, only 6 minutes away. It runs along the length of the western Kremlin wall and it has three separate gardens.

Alexander Gardens, Moscow

The Upper Garden is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , where people pay tribute to the war veterans. Here you will also find some remains of the buildings that celebrated the victory of Russia over Napoleon (which were later destroyed when France occupied Moscow) and an obelisk from Finland that was re-carved when Lenin ruled the country.

Have Lunch at Beluga

Beluga is close to Alexander Garden and is rated as one of the best restaurants in Moscow. Here you will have the opportunity to taste the Russian cuisine and discover its gastronomy. It is located in a modern hotel that also offers a rooftop view of the most iconic places, such as the Kremlin.

Visit the Theater Square and the Bolshoi Theatre

The Theater Square of Moscow is another square that is iconic for the capital of Russia. Here you can see the Bolshoi Theatre , where you can also go to see an opera and theater performances. It is an iconic place where Russia developed its artistic side, so it is very much worth visiting. It was built between 1821 and 1825 and it takes you just five minutes to reach it on foot from Beluga.

End the Day with a Night Visit to Artbat

Artbat is not so close to the city center, but the visit during the evening or the night is a great idea. From the Theater Square, you can take the M2 tram and reach it in about 20 minutes, or you can walk and reach it in 40 minutes (it’s only 3km away).

Arbat Street, Moscow

Artbat is a street filled with kiosks with a lot of souvenirs, bars, cafes, and restaurants, so you can have dinner here, too. It is a major tourist attraction, but the locals love it too because here are the Pushkin House (a museum) and the Vakhtangov Theater where you can see artistic performances.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Europe, so it has a lot of accommodation options. But taking into consideration that you only get to spend one day there, you may want to choose a location close to the city center. However, public transportation is organized and accessible, so it will be easy to move between locations.

Brosko Hotel Arbat, Moscow

Brosko Hotel Arbat

Ulitsa Novy Arbat, 21 bld. 2, Arbat, 119019 Moscow

As you end the day at Arbat Street, you could book your accommodation at the 4-star Brosko Hotel. It offers high-quality services and impressive rooms. You can also eat at their restaurant, which has options both for meat-eaters and vegetarians, plus they also have airport shuttles.

Borodino – if you want to visit the place where Napoleon was defeated by the Russian army , then a two-hour day trip from Moscow to Borodino is what you are looking for. It is not that popular among tourists, so you can enjoy it calmly.

Zvenigorod – if you want to discover the Russian cuisine, then you should head straight to Zvenigorod. Besides the beautiful and impressive monasteries, here you can visit the Museum of Russian Desserts . And the best thing about it is that you can taste them, so it will be a nice gastronomical experience.

Extra Tips for Visiting Moscow

Here are some extra trips you should consider before visiting Moscow .

You need a visa (that you need to pay for) to visit Russia or an invitation from an approved organization.

Always have cash with you because not all shops in Moscow accept credit card payments.

You can use the Metro for transportation, as it is one of the most used, fastest, and cheapest means of transportation in crowded Moscow.
