How to disable safari's frequently visited start page on iphone, ipad, and mac.

The new Frequently Visited and Siri Suggestions sections in the start page on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS might annoy some users. Here's how to hide both.

Quick Links

How to disable the frequently visited section, how to disable siri suggestions.

iOS 13's, iPadOS 13's, and macOS Catalina's Safari updates are quite robust. But the redesigned start page leaves something to be desired. If you don't like the new Frequently Visited or Siri Suggestions sections, here's how to disable them.

As the name suggests, the new Frequently Visited section in Safari's start page lists websites that you visit frequently. If you already have those websites in the Favorites section, this new feature is redundant. You also might not want Safari to show these websites for privacy reasons .

You can either hide a website from this section or disable the whole Frequently Visited section altogether.

Disable the Frequently Visited Section on iPhone and iPad

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Safari app and go to the start page. Find the Frequently Visited section and then press and hold on a website icon.

From the popup, tap on "Delete."

To disable the entire Frequently Visited section, we'll need to go to the Settings app.

Open the Settings app and go to the "Safari" section.

Here, in the General section, tap on the toggle next to "Frequently Visited Sites."

The Frequently Visited section will instantly disappear from the Safari start page.

Disable the Frequently Visited Section on Mac

If you're using a Mac, you can customize the Frequently Visited section right from the start page in Safari.

To delete a particular website from the Frequently Visited section, right-click on the website icon and then click on "Delete."

If you want to remove the entire Frequently Visited section, right-click in the blank area on the start page and uncheck the "Show Frequently Visited" option.

Siri Suggestions have now made their way to the Safari app. Just like Siri Suggestions in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, they aren't really helpful in Safari. Siri Suggestions will show you websites from your reading list, open tabs from other devices, and sites it thinks you might want to visit.

Disabling the Siri Suggestions section is straightforward on the Mac, but the option in iOS and iPadOS is hidden deep in the Settings app.

Disable Siri Suggestions on iPhone and iPad

Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and then go to the "Siri & Search" section.

Here, find the "Safari" option.

On this page, tap on the toggle next to "Show Siri Suggestions In App" to disable Siri Suggestions section in the Safari start page.

Disable Siri Suggestions on Mac

To hide Siri Suggestions section in Safari on macOS Catalina, simply right-click in the empty area on the start page.

Here, click on the "Show Siri Suggestions" option.

The Siri Suggestions section will instantly disappear from the Safari start page.

Whenever you open Safari, you'll see a list of sites that you frequently visit, but what if you don't want that to show? Fortunately, you can toggle that section off or clear your browsing history so those sites don't display on your new tabs in Safari. This wikiHow article teaches you how to get rid of the "Frequently Visited" sites on Safari on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Things You Should Know

  • Hide your 'Frequently Visited' sites on iPhone by tapping "Edit" in a new tab, then toggling the feature off.
  • For Mac, open a new tab and click the filter icon, then uncheck "Frequently Visited" to turn it off.
  • Alternatively, you can clear Safari's history to get rid of 'Frequently Visited'.

Hiding Safari's "Frequently Visited" on iPhone & iPad

Step 1 Open Safari to a new tab.

  • Use this method if you don't want to delete your browsing or search history, but just don't want "Frequently Visited" to display on your new tabs.

Step 2 Tap Edit.

  • A "Customizing Start Page" window will open.

Step 3 Tap the switch next to

  • For older iOS versions, the "Frequently Visited" tab is located within your Settings app in the Safari option.
  • If it doesn't work, like you toggle it off and then look a day later and see the toggle is back on, make sure you don't have "Use Start Page on All Devices" checked on your Mac, as that could be syncing your Mac's Safari preferences with your other Apple devices.
  • To delete individual "Frequently Visited" sites, press and hold the icon next to a site and tap Delete when it pops up.

Hiding Safari's "Frequently Visited" on Mac

Step 1 Open Safari to the start page.

  • You can also delete individual sites from "Frequently Visited" by clicking one of the icons and dragging it to the trash can in the Dock.

Deleting Safari's History on iPhone & iPad

How to Remove "Frequently Visited" on Safari (iPhone and Mac)

Safari's "Frequently Visited" section brings convenience at the cost of your privacy. So, here's how to remove it and keep your top sites private.

Key Takeaways

  • iPhone, iPad, and Mac users have a total of three ways to get rid of Safari's "Frequently Visited" section.
  • Choose between hiding the entire section or deleting specific sites if you wish to keep using the feature but want to clear certain websites.
  • Deleting your Safari history is a better option to ensure complete privacy and prevent others from seeing your web history and top-searched sites.

The "Frequently Visited" section on Safari's start page makes it easy to access top-searched websites quickly. However, someone who borrows your device for a moment can easily see what these sites are. So, here's how to remove "Frequently Visited" from Safari.

How to Remove Safari's Frequently Visited Section on an iPhone

First, let's look at removing the Frequently Visited section from the Safari start page. Follow the steps below to learn what you need to do:

  • Launch Safari. If there's already a webpage loaded, tap the Tabs icon (two squares, overlapped) in the toolbar.
  • Then, tap the Add (+) icon in the bottom-left corner to open a new tab and access the start page.
  • On the start page, scroll down to the bottom and tap Edit .
  • Now, toggle off Frequently Visited .

That's it. After toggling off Frequently Visited , you can also opt to toggle on Use Start Page on All Devices as an additional setting to improve your Safari experience . This will remove the Frequently Visited section from Safari across your other Apple devices, as long as you're signed in to them with the same Apple ID.

How to Get Rid of Frequently Visited Sites in Safari on an iPhone

If you want to continue using the Frequently Visited section but wish to clear one or more of the existing sites listed there, you have two options: delete a specific site or delete your Safari history.

To remove a specific site, long-press on the website icon under the Frequently Visited section and tap Delete from the context.

Deleting your Safari history is the better option if you want to ensure that people won't find out which websites you've visited. That's because removing the Frequently Visited section and deleting specific sites only hides them from view. Those sites still remain in your Safari history.

So, if someone types certain letters or keywords into the search field, the website link will naturally appear as part of your web history.

To delete your Safari history and get rid of all frequently visited sites at once, tap the Bookmark icon in the toolbar, head to the History tab (clock icon), and tap Clear > All History > Clear History .

How to Remove Safari's Frequently Visited Section on a Mac

Let's move on to the instructions for Mac. First, open Safari to view the start page. If you're already on a webpage in Safari, you can access the start page by clicking Bookmarks > Show Start Page from the menu bar.

To customize the Safari start page on your Mac , click Options (icon shows three sliders) at the bottom and uncheck Frequently Visited . This section will now disappear from the start page in Safari.

How to Get Rid of Frequently Visited Sites in Safari on a Mac

Like on an iPhone, you can choose to keep the Frequently Visited section but delete a specific site from the list. In Safari, Control -click on the website under Frequently Visited and choose Delete .

To get rid of frequently visited websites from your web history and prevent them from showing up at the top of your search suggestions, you'll need to delete your Safari history on macOS.

With the browser open, click Safari in the menu bar and choose Clear History . Click the dropdown arrow in the pop-up menu and select All History . Then, click Clear History to confirm your action.

Safari's Frequently Visited Section Doesn't Have to Compromise Your Privacy

As you can see, iPhone, iPad, and Mac users have three options if they wish to remove frequently visited sites from Safari.

If your aim is to simply remove the whole list of sites from plain view, you can hide the entire Frequently Visited section. However, if you want to continue using the feature for convenience, you can either delete specific sites or clear your Safari history completely.

How To : Get Rid of Frequently Visited Websites in Safari on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Get Rid of Frequently Visited Websites in Safari on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Safari has a helpful feature that shows your most frequently visited webpages whenever you open a new tab or window, but it's not for everyone. If you never use it, would rather have a minimalist start page, or want to prevent other people with access to Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac from seeing the websites you frequent the most, you can get rid of it.

Removing the list of your most frequently visited websites in Safari is simple, and you can make your choice apply across all of your iCloud-connected devices.

If you don't use the frequently visited section or want to slim down your start page, hiding it is the best option since you can unhide it and see those sites again. However, if you share an iPad or Mac at home with family and don't want them to see what sites you're visiting the most from your iPhone, erasing your frequently visited sites is best for privacy.

Method 1: Hide 'Frequently Visited' from Safari's Start Page

Open the start page in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, which should show up immediately if you don't have any open tabs. With tabs already open, long-press the tabs button in the toolbar and select "New Tab" from the menu that appears to open a fresh one. You can also tap the tabs button and hit the plus (+) button.

Scroll down the start page, tap the "Edit" button, and then toggle off the "Frequently Visited" switch. Once you close the start page customization options, the Frequently Visited section should be gone.

If you reopen the start page editor and toggle "Frequently Visited" back on, the webpages you frequently visit should appear again when you exit the editor.

How to Get Rid of Frequently Visited Websites in Safari on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

On macOS, click the plus (+) sign at the top of Safari's window, press Command-T , or go to File –> New Tab in the menu bar to open a new tab for the start page. You can also press Command-N or go to File –> New Window in the menu bar to open a new window to the start page.

Method 2: Clear 'Frequently Visited' from Safari's History

The problem with Method 1 is that it only hides your list of frequently visited websites — it doesn't get rid of it. So if your goal is to stop other people with access to your Safari browser from seeing these sites, you'll want to eliminate your browsing history instead.

Open Safari on your iPhone, tap the book icon, then the clock, and hit "Clear." On iPad, tap the sidebar icon, then "History," and hit "Clear." A quick actions menu will appear with a message warning you that clearing your history on your iPhone or iPad will also erase it across all your iCloud-connected devices. Clearing it will also remove cookies and other browsing data on your current device only.

Tap "All time" to delete all browsing data and remove the "Frequently Visited" section from your Safari start page.

You can also go to Settings –> Safari –> Clear History and Website Data to achieve the same effect. After you go back to your Safari start page, you'll notice the "Frequently Visited" section is no longer there.

How to Get Rid of Frequently Visited Websites in Safari on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac

On macOS, go to History –> Clear History or Safari –> Clear History in the menu bar, choose "all history" from the drop-down menu, and hit "Clear History" to wipe the slate clean, effectively removing the Frequently Visited section from your Safari start page. If you still see the Frequently Visited area, close and reopen Safari.

Alternatively, you can go to History –> Show All History in the menu bar, click "Clear History" on the page, choose "all history" from the drop-down menu, and hit "Clear History."

Those options for macOS will also remove cookies and other browsing data on your current computer as it does on iOS and iPadOS. When planning a clandestine escape with your loved one or meticulously selecting the perfect gift for them, the last thing you want is for your iPhone or iPad to inadvertently divulge your plans by displaying the websites you’ve been visiting frequently. Such a slip-up could completely spoil the surprise you’ve been carefully planning.

An easy solution to prevent this is to get rid of frequently visited sites on Safari.

However, if you find the Frequently Visited section helpful and just want to delete one or two sites from the list, that’s also possible. Here’s how:

How to Remove Frequently Visited Sites in Safari on iPhone (And Other Privacy Tips)

Whenever you visit same sites often on your iPhone or iPad, Safari likes to display them in the Frequently Visited section of a new tab. While that is a well thought out implementation to help you get to such sites faster, it’s also a hindrance to privacy . Especially since anyone can see that list of sites you frequently visit with a glance whenever you open a new tab.

Safari Iphone Ipad Remove Delete Frequently Visited Sites Featured Alt

That aside, the Frequently Visited section can also act as a significant distraction. Often, you will likely end up getting sidetracked instead of doing what you originally intended.

Thankfully, it’s simple to remove whatever appears in that section, and you can also eliminate the functionality entirely.

Delete Entries

Any site that shows up within the Frequently Visited section is removable quite easily. To do that, just press and hold the icon for a couple of seconds, and then lift your finger. If your iPhone supports 3D Touch , make sure to not press on the screen too hard since that will trigger another action altogether.

You will then see a Delete option over the icon. Tap it to remove the site from the Frequently Visited section. Rinse and repeat.

Do remember that the same site may show up within the section at a later time if you start visiting it once again regularly.

Delete History

If specific sites keep showing up repeatedly after a certain amount of time regardless of deleting them, or if they are replaced by other sites that you don’t like, you need to consider removing the browsing history on your iPhone or iPad.

To do that, tap the book-shaped icon within a new tab, and then tap on History. Next, tap Clear to the bottom of the screen.

The app will then present you with four separate options that are pretty much self-explanatory.

Safari Iphone Ipad Remove Delete Frequently Visited Sites 3

Using the first three options (The Last Hour, Today, and Today and Yesterday) will clear any browsing activity that was recorded at those periods. That will also prompt Safari to remove any sites within the Frequently Visited section that showed up — or was triggered by activity that occurred — during those periods. To get rid of all listed sites, however, you may need to use the All Time option.

Do keep in mind that clearing your browsing history will also delete any site cookies on your device. That means you will have to sign back into certain sites all over again.

Alternatively, clearing the browser cache also nets the same result. To do that, you need to dive into the Settings app, tap Safari, and then tap Clear History and Website Data. Check our guide for more details.

Disable Frequently Visited Sites

If you don’t like deleting sites within the Frequently Visited section manually or hate going through the inconvenience that results when clearing your browsing history, then consider disabling the functionality. That is also a fantastic way to go about minimizing the level of distractions within new tabs while also giving it a much cleaner look.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, scroll down, and then tap Safari.

Step 2: Turn off the switch next to Frequently Visited Sites, and you are good to go — just like that.

If you want to re-enable the functionality at a later time, simply head back to the Settings panel, select Safari, and then turn on the switch next to Frequently Visited Sites.

Rather than going about deleting sites listed within the Frequently Visited section or disabling the functionality completely, there are a couple of other things that can help you stop having to do all of that. Let’s take a look.

Use Private Browsing Mode

To prevent your browsing activity from being recorded in the first place, you can make use of Safari’s Private Browsing mode. This way, you don’t have to worry about any personal activity being reflected within the Frequently Visited section if that’s what concerns you.

To switch to Private Browsing mode, open the tab switcher, and then tap Private.

Safari Iphone Ipad Remove Delete Frequently Visited Sites 9

To exit Private Mode, just tap the Private option within the tab switcher once again.

Use Privacy-oriented Browser

An alternative to using Safari’s Private Browsing mode is to use a dedicated privacy-centric browser. Both DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser and Firefox Focus are excellent browsers in their rights, and will not only remove your browsing activity automatically when you exit them but will also block site trackers from following you around.

Both apps are extremely lightweight, and only requires a few dozen megabytes of storage. Read our Firefox Focus versus DuckDuckGo comparison for more details on what these browsers bring to the table.

Preserve Your Privacy

The Frequently Visited section in Safari doesn’t stand well from a privacy perspective, despite being useful at times. But as you just found out, there are many ways to make that less of a problem. And you can also delete the functionality if you find it too distractive.

Next up: Safari doesn’t have a native dark mode, but you don’t have to give up hope. Here’s are two dark mode workarounds that you can use instead.

How to remove frequently visited on iPhone step by step

  • December 4, 2023
  • Tara Schatz

If you use Safari or Chrome as your browser of choice on your iPhone, you may have noticed that the start page and new tab pages show you the websites that you visit frequently. The goal is to make it easier for you to tap over to your favorite websites, which obviously saves you a bit of time.

But what about the times when you may not want to advertise your browsing history to everyone who may open your phone?

Fortunately, there is an easy way to delete frequently visited sites on your iPhone. As a bonus, you can choose to remove the Safari feature from all of your iCloud-connected devices — iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

How to remove frequently visited sites on your iPhone using Safari

There are two ways to get rid of the ‘frequently visited’ section on the start page of your iPhone when you open Safari. You can choose to hide those sites, which will give you the option of changing the settings to see them again if you change your mind. This method is useful when you just want to get rid of clutter on your start page, but it doesn’t necessarily hide your favorite websites from prying eyes.

If you want to keep others from checking out your favorite sites, your best bet is to erase those frequently visited sites entirely. We’ll go over how to do both so you can choose which method would be best for your situation, and we’ll also show you how to clear your browsing history on Chrome.

How to hide frequently visited sites from Safari on iPhone

Let’s start with this simple method for hiding your most frequently visited sites from Safari’s start page. The start page should show up when you open Safari on your iPhone, as long as you don’t have any tabs open.

If you do have tabs open, long-press the tabs icon in the lower toolbar menu and select ‘New Tab’ to pull up Safari’s start page. Then follow these steps to hide frequently visited sites:

  • Scroll down to the very bottom of Safari’s start page and tap ‘Edit.’
  • You will see a list of menu items to add or hide from Safari’s start page. Toggle off ‘Frequently Visited.’
  • Close the customization page and check to ensure that the frequently visited sites are gone from Safari’s start page.

Keep your photos tidy with CleanMy®Phone

Clearing your browsing data and frequently visited websites is one way to streamline your internet experience and clean up clutter on your iPhone. Another way to get rid of clutter is to make it a habit to remove unwanted photos from your photo library. CleanMy®Phone makes this so easy to do. First, its Declutter module categorizes your photos so you can easily find blurry shots, screenshots, screen recordings, and other useless stuff. And its Organize tool shows you all of your similar images and lets you choose the best of the bunch so you can delete the rest. This makes it so easy to quickly scroll through your images and tap to delete them.

Clear frequently visited sites from Safari search history

When you hide your list of frequently visited sites, all you have to do is toggle the feature on in Safari’s settings to see them again. If you want to keep your browsing history private, you will have to clear your browsing history entirely. Here’s how to eliminate your browsing history on your iPhone:

  • Open Safari on your iPhone.
  • Tap the book icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the clock icon to see a list of all the websites you’ve recently visited.
  • Tap ‘Clear’ and choose the timeframe that you want to clear. You can choose to clear your browsing history from the past hour, the past day, today and yesterday, or all history. Choosing ‘all history’ is the best way to remove your frequently visited websites.
  • After making your selection, tap ‘Clear History.’

Alternatively, you can make this same selection in Settings on your iPhone. Simply go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Clear History and Website Data

Using either method will erase all of your frequently visited sites on Safari, but you will have to repeat the procedure often if you are trying to hide the websites that you visit most often.

If you don’t want others to see the sites you visit in Safari, you can open a private browsing window by tapping the tabs icon and choosing ‘Private.’ After you close the tab, Safari won’t remember or save the sites you’ve visited.

How to sync Safari customizations across devices

If you use Safari on your computer and it is connected to your other devices through iCloud, you can choose to sync customizations across your iCloud devices, including your iPhone and iPad. For the customizations to sync, you will have to be signed into all devices with the same Apple ID and password. Here’s how to do it from Safari on a computer:

  • Open Safari on your computer.
  • Tap the preferences icon in the lower right corner of your screen.
  • On the pop-up menu, toggle on ‘Use Start Page on All Devices.’

How to clear your browsing history on Chrome

If you use Chrome to browse the internet, the process to remove frequently visited sites is a little different but very similar to the process in Safari. Like Safari, Chrome displays a record of your most frequently visited sites on the start screen so you can quickly check out your favorite websites.

Here’s how to clear your browsing history from Chrome on your iPhone:

  • Open Chrome on your iPhone.
  • Tap ‘Recent Tabs.’
  • Tap ‘Show Full History.’
  • Scroll to the bottom and choose ‘Clear Browsing History.’ A menu will appear with a few different options. First, choose the time range for deleting the browsing data. You can choose from the past hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks, or all time.
  • Next, choose to clear just your browsing history or to clear cookies and cached images and files. If you clear the cookies, it will usually sign you out of most sites, and clearing cached images will temporarily slow down your browsing experience.
  • Finally, tap ‘Clear Browsing Data’ to clear your browsing history.

If you use Chrome to browse the internet and want to keep the websites you visit private, just tap the three dots in the bottom right of any Chrome screen and tap ‘New Incognito Tab.’ This will open a private tab in Chrome, and none of the data from your browsing session will be saved on your iPhone.

The best way to remove your frequently visited websites from Safari’s start page is to use a combination of the methods listed above. Remove the sites from your start screen and make it a habit to clear your browsing data often. You should take other privacy measures like ensuring Face ID is enabled on your iPhone, changing your passcode often, and not leaving your iPhone lying around for others to tamper with.

How to Delete a Frequently Visited Site on iPhone 15: Easy Steps

Deleting a frequently visited site on an iPhone 15 is a simple process that requires just a few taps. Go to Safari, tap the bookmarks icon, tap on the ‘Frequently Visited’ section, press and hold the site you want to delete, and tap ‘Delete.’ And voila, the site is gone from your frequently visited list!

Step by Step Tutorial: How to Delete a Frequently Visited Site on an iPhone 15

Before we dive into the step-by-step guide, it’s important to understand that the following steps will help you remove a website that appears in the ‘Frequently Visited’ section when you open a new tab in Safari. This will not delete any history or data from the website itself, it just removes it from the quick access view.

Step 1: Open Safari

Open the Safari app on your iPhone 15. Safari is the default web browser on iPhones, and it’s where your frequently visited sites are stored. Ensure you’re on the start page, which shows up when you open a new tab.

Step 2: Access Bookmarks

Tap the bookmarks icon at the bottom of the screen. The bookmarks icon looks like an open book. Tapping it will bring you to your Safari bookmarks, history, and frequently visited sites.

Step 3: Go to the ‘Frequently Visited’ section

Find the ‘Frequently Visited’ section within your bookmarks. This section is usually found right under your bookmarks or history. It contains thumbnails of websites you visit often.

Step 4: Choose the site to be deleted

Press and hold the site’s icon you wish to delete. Pressing and holding will bring up a menu with a few options. Make sure to press on the icon gently – if you press too hard, you might activate the 3D Touch feature instead.

Step 5: Delete the site

Tap ‘Delete’ to remove the site from your ‘Frequently Visited’ list. Once you tap ‘Delete’, the site will immediately be removed from the list, and you won’t see it in the ‘Frequently Visited’ section anymore.

After completing these steps, the site you selected should no longer appear in your ‘Frequently Visited’ section. If you change your mind or delete a site by accident, you’ll need to visit that site multiple times again for it to reappear in the list.

Tips: How to Manage Frequently Visited Sites on an iPhone 15

  • Keep in mind that frequently visited sites are populated based on your browsing habits, so the more you visit a site, the more likely it is to show up.
  • If you want to keep a clean and curated list of frequently visited sites, consider bookmarking your favorite pages and organizing them in folders instead.
  • Deleting a site from your ‘Frequently Visited’ doesn’t clear your browsing history. You’ll need to do that separately if you want to remove all traces of your visit.
  • If you’re concerned about privacy, consider using Private Browsing mode in Safari which doesn’t track your browsing history.
  • To prevent sites from appearing in ‘Frequently Visited’ at all, you can disable the feature in Safari settings under the ‘General’ section.
