Seattle Ice Cream Cruise for Kids

Sharing is caring!

The Seattle Ice Cream Cruise (also called the Sunday Ice Cream Cruise) is a little boat ride offered by the Seattle Ferry Service.

This post about the seattle ice cream cruise was written by seattle family travel expert marcie cheung and contains affiliate links which means if you purchase something from one of my affiliate links, i may earn a small commission that goes back into maintaining this blog., what’s the seattle ice cream cruise.

The captain narrates this Seattle Lake Union cruise to explain a bit about the history of Seattle and the sights you’ll see.

When he’s not talking, you’ll jam out to oldies music! It’s a short boat ride on a small boat perfect for exploring Seattle with kids!

Where is the Sunday Ice Cream Cruise Located?

They are next to the Museum of History and Industry clock at South Lake Union Park. You’ll see a sandwich board sign with balloons on it. That’s where you’ll line up to board.

When Can I Go?

The Seattle Ice Cream Cruise is available year-round on Sundays on the hour from 11am-5pm. Yes, even during rain/snow.

Personally, you can’t beat cruising around Seattle in the summer, but I think it would be fun to do it in the fall/winter and sip hot chocolate!

How Long is this Seattle Boat Ride?

The Sunday Ice Cream Cruise in Seattle is about 45-50 minutes long, which is perfect for families with little kids.

What Will I See?

This Seattle boat ride takes you past Gasworks Park, Dale Chihuly’s glass studio, Ivar’s Salmon House, Seattle floating homes (including the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat), and more.

Plus, you can see seaplanes, kayaks, and lots of other boats!

How Much Does it Cost?

The Sunday Ice Cream Cruise in Seattle is cash/check only.

  • Adults: $12
  • Seniors: $11
  • Kids 5-13: $8
  • Kids under 5: $3

What’s the Seating Situation Onboard?

On the top deck, there is bench seating. We also saw a few chairs scattered around. There are some adorable painted chairs inside, if you want to be indoors.

What Type of Ice Cream is Available?

When we were there in August 2018, they had Haagen-Daz bars, ice cream sandwiches, traditional root beer floats, chocolate root beer floats, orange Crush floats, and Strawberry soda floats. They were $2-5 each.

Do They Have Anything Besides Ice Cream?

They have chips, coffee, soda, and hot chocolate available. They might have other items available in cooler weather.

What if it Rains?

There’s an indoor space inside the Seattle boat that is set up with chessboards, checkers, and other fun games. Plus, you can still grab a treat and look out the window!

Or, wear a rain jacket and enjoy the views from the top deck!

Where Should I Park?

Parking on Sundays is FREE! So, you can try your luck at any of the street parking nearby. There were quite a few spots available in the lot West of South Lake Union Park. Just check to see if the pedestrian bridge is down, or you’ll need to walk around the long way.

Seattle Ice Cream Cruise Tips for Families

Show up early.

The boat seating is limited to 45 people, I believe. Since you don’t book your tickets ahead of time, it’s first come first served. Arriving 20 minutes early would be good.

For our cruise in August, they turned a few people away who had to wait for the next cruise.

Photo of the Sunday Ice Cream Cruise on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, which is a Seattle activity for families. #sundayicecreamcruise #seattleferry #seattleboat #seattlecruise #lakeunion #southlakeunion #seattlewa #pnw #seattlefamily #seattleattraction #thingstodoinseattle

There are 2 restrooms on board. They have an electric foot pedal to flush and the Captain stated that kids have a hard time with them.

So, you might go potty before you go (there are restrooms at the Cafe nearby.)

They don’t have credit card machines, so you’ll need to pay cash or check for your tickets and any treats you’d like.

Check to make sure you have enough before boarding, especially if you’ve promised your kids ice cream!

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT BEFORE YOU ORDER

The line for ice cream gets long and it takes awhile to make the orders (especially the floats.) Don’t be the person who holds up the line debating what you want to order.

It helps them if you already know what you want so they aren’t standing there waiting. And the people behind you in line will appreciate it!

BRING WET WIPES

Maybe it’s just my kids, but the second they start eating ice cream, it’s all over their hands, faces, hair, clothes, etc.

Bring lots of wet wipes to thoroughly scrub them down after their treats. They have garbage cans on board. This will be a lot easier than taking them to the restroom.

The stairs to get up to the top deck are steep. We had our kids turn around and go down them like a ladder. This felt a lot safer.

What Else to Do at Lake Union Park

Lake Union Park is in an awesome location just to hang around with kids. There’s a little beach where you can play in the water. Plus, lots of grassy area to run around!

We love watching the seaplanes take off and land. And of course, watching the boats!

Photo of the toy boats available through the Center for Wooden Boats at Lake Union Park in Seattle, WA. #pnw #lakeunion #lakeunionpark #toyboats #miniatureboats #seattlewa #pacificnorthwest #thingstodoinseattle

My kids have been obsessed with the little toy boats since they played with them at Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris last year.

We were THRILLED to discover that the Center for Wooden Boats has them available to borrow for a $5 suggested donation at the pond right at South Lake Union Park. Find out more about the pond boat sailing here .

MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND INDUSTRY

The Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) has been at their Lake Union location for a few years now. It’s focused a lot on Seattle history, from the pioneer days until today!

This is where you’ll find the famous Rainier “R” sign, a Boeing B-1 plane, and more! Kids ages 14 and under are free and MOHAI is free every first Thursday of the month.

Their next traveling exhibit is all about World War I in America (September 1, 2018 – February 10, 2019.) And if you are a genealogy nut like me, you can access their on-site research library to discover photos, books, movies, newspaper clippings, etc.

CHECK OUT OTHER BOATS

The Center for Wooden Boats offers free boat rides every Sunday. It’s also based on a first come first served system.

Sign-ups start at 10am. When we arrived at 10:30am, the line wrapped around the building. They can only accommodate 200 people total, so if you’d like to do this, plan to arrive early to get in line. Or at least, drop off one person to wait in line to sign up. You can find out more here .

If you go in the summer, bring a change of clothes and play a bit at their splash pad! It’s basically just water shooting up from the concrete, but it’s the perfect way to cool off in the summer heat!

This is SO fun! My kids would like this and I don't think it would make me seasick. Plus...ice cream!! :D I'm adding this to my PNW road trip list!

marciecheung

Yes, the boat doesn't really rock or anything! I get motion sick, but didn't feel a thing!

Seattle is such a beautiful spot! I day dream of moving tot he area.

We LOVE it here!

I actually just heard about that but haven't done it yet! I need to add it to my list.

It's really cute and so affordable!

Wednesday 8th of August 2018

Thanks for all of the info. I've actually had this on my radar for a couple of years but, honestly, didn't even know where it was. Ha, ha. Good thing you mentioned it was cash only because would have shown up thinking they would take a card.

Yes! I'm glad they had balloons or we might have missed it!

Diana Tidswell

This sounds like a lot of fun and such a nice place to spend your weekends with your kids and I am sure they will like it.

They really liked seeing the floating homes!

We rented Seattle Water Tours as a company fun event rather than as an individual and it was great! We pretty much rented the whole boat and it was good for 40 people. The process was very easy and they got back to us very fast! The pricing is very reasonable and even gave us a small discount. In regards of the experience, it was AMAZING! We did the tour at night and the captain and his assistant was very nice and patient on making sure that our questions are answered and even gave a narration of Seattle history and the impact of the Lake Union on Seattle's growth. Parking was also pretty easy to find since it is right by the park, so it has a parking lot. It's right next to MOHAI which makes it very convenient. I would say though that we were expecting free ice cream, but you had to pay extra for that which was kinda disappointing.

COVID TIMES REVIEW. This ride is one of fewer attractions that I would say it doesn't seem to affected by the pandemic (at this time) because it's OUTDOORS and most of the passengers wear masks. We were asked to wear a mask as long as we were in the lower deck/cabin; and it wasn't too crowded. So feel safe to ride with them. Having said that I'd say that this is good choice for people who has never been in Lake Union. It's a short ride with fun facts shared by the Capitan and a lovely view of Seattle skyline. Very touristy. Let's start from the beginning. We arrived Sunday morning at 10AM and there was already a line, but it was until 10:30 that the Ice cream cruise arrived. We were able to jump in at 10:45 and the ship sales right in time (11:00am) All the crew is super friendly, and the Capitan is kind and very patient. Just for you to know that your ticket DOESNT include the ice cream, but for $2 or $3 you can buy cookie ice cream sandwiches and/or Hagen Däas ice cream.

Such a fun 1 hr cruise around Seattle area for $15 per person, definitely beautiful views and lots of history learned . Def check it out.!!

ice cream cruise schedule

Overpriced by far. Was disappointed with the ice cream options, only soda floats (orange, coke, root beer, strawberry (?)), and then store-bought ice cream sandwiches, drumsticks, and fruit bars. The floats are $4 each, and the others are $3 each, which is a pretty disappointing ripoff. The young woman who serves the ice cream is super rude, she acted like we were stupid when we asked what flavors of ice cream they had, and I heard her aggressively spell out a word letter by letter to the customer before me when he didn't understand what she was saying. The menu was silly and confusing, with random extra 3 spaces between some of the items and then no spaces between others, making it confusing if I was ordering a Lays Chips drumstick...? Or if those were just mistakenly crunched all together on the same line. I wish I had thought to take a picture so I could include it, it was actually comical how badly laid out it was, and it was only posted at the front of the line, so you had to decipher it on the spot while the rude young woman was waiting for you. Finally, the captain was almost impossible to hear, they played weird tropical music through the whole cruise and his speaker was too quiet and staticky, so I caught almost none of the random facts he probably found during a 1 hour Google search session (i.e., his facts were less professional tour guide and more elementary school book report) Told my girlfriend at the end I wish we had just picked up some Tillamook ice cream for $6 at QFC and then had a picnic for free at Gasworks park. This is what I recommend to anyone thinking about booking this cruise; trust me, you'll have a much better experience. The one thing I will say that was positive is that the captain was friendly, he does take reservations on Saturdays, and it's a pretty easy process.

This is a great find in Seattle and hasn't been found by the masses....yet. The Seattle Ferry Service, not to be confused with Washington State Ferries, offers a variety of specialty cruises from their Lake Union dock just off of MOHAI. Each Sunday, they offer Ice Cream Cruises that last 45 minutes for $12 adults, $3-8 for kids. Great bonus - they are dog friendly, even in the downstairs interior cabin. The trip included local history, explanations of specific boats, personal stories, and some background music. At times it was a bit tricky to hear the captain so the sound system might need to be upgraded at some point. Growing up in Seattle for my entire life, I loved stumbling upon this and was able to pick up some new random facts. Each sailing has enough room for 45 people and tickets can only be purchased at the sailing (hourly from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm on Sundays). Make sure to bring cash for tickets and ice cream, as ice cream isn't included - who wants to miss out on ice cream?

Photo of L W.

Great tour of Lake Union. You can tell the Captain really loves what he does. Very informative and entertaining!! Great value!

Photo of Carey T.

Best kept Seattle secret! Great inexpensive way to get out on the lake and see some of the views and sights of the city. I recommend for every person having people visiting from out of town hands down. Pick up is at Mohai dock and $12 per adult.

Ice cream!

Sunday ice cream cruiser review: For a business that is aimed towards families with children the captain was quite rude and lacked any patience for them whatsoever. The boat is in need of an update, almost got stuck coming up to the dock (literally loud grinding and repeated attempts to move forward towards the dock, feeling the impact of the bottom of the boat hitting the bottom of the bay) and the ice cream choices were like the last ones you'd pick from the side of an ice cream truck but for triple the price . Not hand scooped as their page would have you believe unless you are getting a mediocre root beer float. The woman who was serving ice cream and lining up people on the dock was also impatient and rude. You only had about 15-20 minutes to buy ice cream on this tour and were cut off if she had to leave her post. If kids were in their way... it's a narrow boat, they would snap at them; if they touched the chess pieces they snapped at them... how's about offering more kid friendly options? I understand safety is of the utmost importance but this was excessive and everyone on board seemed put off by the captains attitude including all 7 in our group. This tour is not as great or as fun as ride the ducks but had nice views near Fremont when you weren't being crammed, snapped at or shuffled in and out of place. Stars are solely for the views.

ice cream cruise schedule

We did the ice cream boat tour. It was fabulous. The captain had great commentary and I learned some really cool things. You pay extra for ice cream but it was a reasonable price.

ice cream cruise schedule

I rented out the boat through Seattle ferry service for Seafair on Saturday for a birthday party. Captain Larry responded to my emails quickly and answered all of my questions. He even allowed me to come the night before to decorate the boat (it was for a surprise bday party.) When you rent out the boat, you can either hire a caterer or you can bring your own food/drinks. We opted out of the catering and prepared everything ourselves. There is a grill you can use so we brought BBQ food to cook on board. You just need to get a liquor license for the day online. There is a maximum of 42 people and we got the boat for 8 hours. Captain Larry showed us around/gave a tour, we saw the blue angels and boat races and at the end we got to swim. Everyone had an amazing time and I totally would recommend renting out with Seattle ferry service for any event! Thank you Captain Larry and Chris!

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc.  Google Analytics uses Cookies or other tracking technologies to help us analyze how users interact with the Site and Services, compile reports on their activity, and provide other services related to their activity and usage. The technologies used by Google may collect information such as your IP address, time of visit, whether you are a returning visitor, and any referring website. The technologies used by Google Analytics do not gather information that personally identifies you. The information generated by Google Analytics will be transmitted to and stored by Google and will be subject to Google’s privacy policies.

Google reCAPTCHA

We use Google reCAPTCHA, a free service provided by Google, Inc., to protect our Site from spam and abuse. Google reCAPTCHA uses advanced risk analysis techniques to decipher humans and bots. Google reCAPTCHA works differently depending on what version is deployed. For example, you may be asked to check a box indicating that you are not a robot or Google reCAPTCHA may detect abusive traffic without user interaction.  Google reCAPTCHA works by transmitting certain types of information to Google, such as the referrer URL, IP address, visitor behavior, operating system information, browser and length of the visit, cookies, and mouse movements. Your use of Google reCAPTCHA is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

We use Hotjar in order to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize this service and experience. Hotjar is a technology service that helps us better understand our users’ experience (e.g., how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and do not like, etc.) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback. Hotjar uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behavior and their devices. This includes a device’s IP address (processing during your session and stored in a de-identified form), device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location (country only), and the preferred language used to display our Site. Hotjar stores this information on our behalf in a pseudonymized user profile. Hotjar is contractually forbidden to sell any of the data collected on our behalf.

We use Smart Look in order to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize this service and experience. Smart Look is a technology service that helps us better understand our users’ experience (e.g., how much time they spend on mobile app screens, which links they choose to click, what users do and do not like, etc.) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback. Smart Look uses technologies to collect data on our users’ behavior and their devices under Event Vesta Inc.’s direction and covered by our privacy policy. Smart Look only processes your data to provide our services to us. To make sure your data is adequately protected, Event Vesta Inc. and Smart Look enter into a Data Processing Agreement. If you don’t want to be recorded by Smart Look, you can opt-out . Please note that if you clear your cookies or use a different browser, you will need to opt-out again. Similarly, you have to contact the website provider if you want to exercise your rights with respect to your personal data.

To ensure that your Personally Identifiable Information receives an adequate level of protection, we have put in place appropriate procedures with the service providers we share it with to ensure that it is treated consistent with applicable data security and privacy laws. For example, we use payment processors, marketing, data analytics, customer service, employment, development, and social media service providers.

Some internet browsers incorporate a “Do Not Track” feature that signals to websites you visit that you do not want to have your online activity tracked. Given that there is not a uniform way that browsers communicate the “Do Not Track” signal, the Site does not currently interpret, respond to or alter its practices when it receives “Do Not Track” signals.

21. Injunctive Relief

You acknowledge that we may be irreparably damaged if these Terms are not specifically enforced, and damages at law would be an inadequate remedy. Therefore, in the event of a breach or threatened breach of any provision of these Terms by you, we shall be entitled, without prejudice to any other rights and remedies that may be sought under Section 22, to an injunction restraining such breach or threatened breach, without being required to show any actual damage or to post an injunction bond, and/or to a decree for specific performance of the provisions of these Terms. For purposes of this Section, you agree that any action or proceeding with regard to such injunction restraining such breach or threatened breach shall be brought in the state or federal courts located in Omaha, Nebraska. You consent to the jurisdiction of such court and waive any objection to the laying of venue of any such action or proceeding in such court. You agree that service of any court paper may be effected on such party by mail or in such other manner as may be provided under applicable laws, rules of procedure or local rules.

22. MANDATORY ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION AND JURY TRIAL WAIVER

Most concerns can be resolved quickly and to your satisfaction by contacting us as set forth in the “Questions” section below.

In the event that we are not able to resolve a dispute, and with the exception of the claims for injunctive relief by us as described above and otherwise set forth herein, you hereby agree that either you or we may require any dispute, claim, or cause of action (“Claim”) between you and us or any third parties arising out of use of the Site, the Services, and any other actions with us (whether based in contract, tort, statute, fraud, misrepresentation, or any other legal theory) to be arbitrated on an individual (non-class) basis. However, both parties retain the right to seek relief in a small claims court (or a state court equivalent) for a Claim within the scope of its jurisdiction so long as the small claims action does not seek to certify a class, combine the claims of multiple persons, recover damages in excess of the limit for a small claim under applicable state law or is not transferred, removed, or appealed from small claims court to any different court. Additionally, if you are a California resident, you retain the right to obtain public injunctive relief from any court with proper jurisdiction.

THERE IS NO JUDGE OR JURY IN ARBITRATION, AND COURT REVIEW OF AN ARBITRATION AWARD IS VERY LIMITED. ADDITIONALLY, ANY ARBITRATION OF A CLAIM WILL BE ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS, AND, THEREFORE, YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT YOU ARE WAIVING THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE AS A CLASS REPRESENTATIVE OR CLASS MEMBER IN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. AS PART OF THIS WAIVER, YOU AGREE THAT YOU WAIVE THE RIGHT TO ACT AS A PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL IN AN ARBITRATION; THAT EXCEPT AS OTHERWISE PROVIDED IN THIS ARBITRATION AGREEMENT, CLAIMS BROUGHT BY OR AGAINST YOU MAY NOT BE JOINED OR CONSOLIDATED WITH CLAIMS BROUGHT BY OR AGAINST ANY OTHER PERSON; AND THE ARBITRATOR SHALL HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO CONDUCT A CLASS-WIDE ARBITRATION, PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ARBITRATION OR MULTIPLE-PARTY ARBITRATION.

You and we agree that your use of the Services involves interstate commerce, and that this arbitration agreement shall be interpreted and enforced in accordance with the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) set forth in Title 9 of the U.S. Code to the fullest extent possible, notwithstanding any state law to the contrary, regardless of the origin or nature of the Claims at issue. The arbitrator must follow, to the extent applicable: (1) the substantive law of the state in which we entered into the transaction giving rise to this arbitration agreement; (2) the applicable statutes of limitations; and (3) claims of privilege recognized at law. The arbitrator will not be bound by federal, state or local rules of procedure and evidence or by state or local laws concerning arbitration proceedings.

If either you or we elect to arbitrate a Claim, the dispute shall be resolved by binding arbitration administered under the applicable rules of the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”). Either you or we may elect to resolve a particular Claim through arbitration, even if the other party has already initiated litigation in court related to the Claim, by: (a) making written demand for arbitration upon the other party, (b) initiating arbitration against the other party, or (c) filing a motion to compel arbitration in court.

If this is a consumer-purpose transaction, the applicable rules will be the AAA’s Consumer Arbitration Rules. The applicable AAA rules and other information about arbitrating a claim under AAA, including how to submit a dispute to arbitration, may be obtained by visiting its website at https://www.adr.org/ or by calling 1-800-778-7879. If AAA will not serve as the administrator of the arbitration, and you and we cannot then agree upon a substitute arbitrator, you and we shall request that a court with proper jurisdiction appoint an arbitrator. However, we will abide by the applicable AAA rules regardless of the forum. Arbitration shall be conducted in the county and state where you accepted these Terms, you reside, or another reasonably convenient place to you as determined by the arbitrator, unless applicable laws require another location. Judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. Except as provided in applicable statutes, the arbitrator’s award is not subject to review by the court and it cannot be appealed. The parties will have the option to request and receive a statement of reasons for the arbitration award.

If you elect to file the arbitration, and this is a consumer-purpose transaction, you will pay the filing fee to the extent required by AAA’s Consumer Arbitration Rules but not to exceed the cost of filing a lawsuit. Any amount above what it would cost you to file a lawsuit, we will pay. All other arbitration fees and expenses shall be allocated to us according to AAA rules. Except for the arbitration fees and expenses, each party shall pay its own costs and fees incurred (including attorneys’ fees), unless the arbitrator allocates them differently in accordance with applicable law. This paragraph applies only if this is a consumer-purpose transaction.

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in these Terms, and except as otherwise set forth in this paragraph, the agreement to arbitration may be amended by us only upon advance notice to you. If we make any amendment to this agreement to arbitration (other than renumbering the agreement to align with any other amendment to the Terms) in the future, that amendment shall not apply to any claim that was filed in a legal proceeding or action against us prior to the effective date of the amendment. The amendment shall apply to all other Claims governed by this agreement to arbitration that have arisen or may arise between you and us. However, we may amend this agreement to arbitration and not provide you notice; in that case, the amendments will not apply to you and the agreement to arbitration contained in these Terms to which you agreed will continue to apply to you and us as if no amendments were made.

If any part of this arbitration provision is invalid, all other parts of it remain valid. However, if the class action limitation is invalid, then this arbitration provision is invalid in its entirety, provided that the remaining Terms shall remain in full force and effect. This arbitration provision will survive the termination of your use of the Site, the Services, and any other actions with us.

You may reject this arbitration provision within thirty (30) days of accepting the Terms by emailing us at [email protected] and including in the subject line “Rejection of Arbitration Provision.”

23. Miscellaneous Provisions

Severability. If any term or provision in these Terms is found to be void, against public policy, or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction and such finding or order becomes final with all appeals exhausted, then the offending provision shall be deemed modified to the extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable. If the offending provision cannot be so modified, then the same shall be deemed stricken from these Terms in its entirety and the remainder of these Terms shall survive with the said offending provision eliminated.

Governing Law and Venue. These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware excluding its conflicts of law rules, and the United States of America. Except as set forth in the agreement to arbitration and without waiving it, you agree that any dispute arising from or relating to the subject matter of these Terms (including but not limited to if you opt out of the agreement to arbitration) shall be governed by the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the state and federal courts of Omaha, Nebraska, except where the jurisdiction and venue are mandated by applicable assignment.

Assignment. We may freely assign our obligations and rights under these Terms, including all personal information in our possession that we have collected during your use of the Site as further described in our Privacy Policy .

No Waiver. No failure, omission or delay on the part of Event Vesta in exercising any right under these Terms will preclude any other further exercise of that right or other right under these Terms.

TOUR-SPECIFIC FAQS

Is this a good tour for kids.

The Ice Cream Social Cruise or the Best of the Lake Cruise are best for children because of the length of the tour. As with all of our tours, there is a live narration so passengers are asked to be respectful of others who are there to enjoy the narration.

Are there any discounts on this tour?

We also offer AAA, Preferred Guest with local hotels, and military discounts. (One discount per transaction.) We also offer an additional discount for senior guests on Tuesdays.  View our specials and promos here.

Can we bring snacks on board the boat?

You will be served an ice cream sundae by our staff during the tour. We offer a full snack bar and cash bar with items such as chips, candy and soft drinks. We do not allow coolers, and no alcohol is permitted to be brought on board because we have liquor licenses on all of our boats.

Can I bring a stroller?

In most cases we can accommodate a stroller, however on very busy days our crew may ask you to fold it up and/or store it on the dock due to limited space. The boat crew makes that decision based on the number of tickets sold.

Is the boat wheelchair accessible?

The Grand Belle can accommodate a wheelchair. There is a gangplank that goes across from the pier to the boat that our crew can help you navigate. Please let us know ahead of time if you need extra assistance.

Which cruise ice cream is the best? I ate dozens of scoops to find out

Ashley Kosciolek

If you're on a warm-weather cruise, ice cream is one of the best ways to treat yourself after a long day in port, a sunny day by the pool or a nice dinner. Fortunately, cruise ships offer plenty of options for finding your fix.

From simple soft-serve that you dispense yourself to elaborate sundaes and milkshake concoctions that are both tasty and social media-worthy, what you receive is largely dependent on what you're willing to pay.

I've rounded up several of my own drool-inducing personal favorites — both free and for an extra fee — from six of the most popular cruise lines. I scream, you scream, we all scream for … this list of the best ice cream at sea.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Gelato by Jean-Philippe Maury and Venchi Chocolates, MSC Cruises

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: MSC Cruises ships MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa (Jean Philippe); MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape (Venchi)

Cost: Prices start from $4.50 per scoop; additional scoops, cones and toppings cost extra.

TPG take: Gelato is an Italian staple, so it's no surprise that Mediterranean-based cruise line MSC Cruises has partnered with some of the finest confectioners to offer gourmet gelato selections on its newest ships. Select vessels feature outlets by Venchi Chocolates and Jean-Philippe Maury.

In addition to chocolates, macarons and a slew of other sweets, these shops serve up creamy for-fee scoops in basic flavors like strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, and other favorites like pistachio, mint chocolate, coffee and stracciatella.

Our recommendation? Try the Oreo cookie flavor in a chocolate-dipped cone at Jean-Philippe Maury.

TPG rating: 5/5

Coco's Cookies 'n' Cream Mad Milkshake, Norwegian Cruise Line

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: Coco's on Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Prima

TPG take: I'll be frank: I found the ice cream and gelato options at Norwegian 's onboard extra-charge venues to be a bit boring. So, instead of ordering a scoop or two, I traded up a little — actually a lot.

The Cookies 'n' Cream Mad Milkshake from Coco's is intense. Dark chocolate gelato and milk are blended and poured into a large mug drizzled with chocolate. Toppings include whipped cream, M&Ms, caramel drizzle, whole Oreo cookies, a milk chocolate garnish and gummy bears. It was a rich treat that left me so full I couldn't finish the entire thing, but I enjoyed the 3/4 I did manage to consume.

Overall, it didn't taste like cookies 'n' cream; it was merely a chocolate milkshake topped with Oreos and a bunch of other tasty accouterments.

TPG rating: 4/5

Gelato from Lick Me Till … Ice Cream, Virgin Voyages

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: All Virgin Voyages ships

TPG take: In true Virgin Voyages " I want to be a kid again " style, the line offers decent ice cream — and it's free. Choose a flavor (vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, key lime pie, espresso chip, raspberry beet, brown butter financier and others). You can get it in either a cup or one of three flavors of waffle cones: regular, chocolate or red velvet.

My personal favorite? Vanilla in a chocolate waffle cone.

The outpost earns bonus points for its name, which, like many things on Virgin's ships, drips with sexual innuendo.

TPG rating: 3/5

Ice cream from Cups & Scoops, Royal Caribbean

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas

Cost: Prices range from $2.50 for a small to $4 for a large. Add 75 cents for a cone and up to 50 cents per topping. Milkshakes are $4.50 for 16 ounces. You can also order a banana sundae with unlimited toppings for $5.50 or a cupcake sundae (featuring one of nearly a dozen flavors of delicious cupcakes) for $4.25.

TPG take: Cups & Scoops, along the Royal Caribbean Boardwalk on Deck 6, serves ice cream in a variety of staple flavors like strawberry, chocolate and vanilla.

I personally went for cookies and cream in a waffle cone — with sprinkles, of course.

Although several Royal Caribbean ships house actual stand-alone ice cream outposts, Cups & Scoops gets my vote for the best spot because it also serves up a selection of delicious cupcakes that form the basis for the venue's cupcake sundaes.

The Godfather Premium Dessert sundae, Princess Cruises

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: All vessels in the Princess fleet at the onboard ice cream shop, dubbed Coffee & Cones, Gelateria, Swirls or Scoops, depending on the ship

Cost: All Premium Dessert sundaes cost $12 unless you have a package that covers the cost. For an extra $2, you can spike them with a shot of your favorite alcohol.

TPG take: For a sweet treat nearly any time of day, try one of six for-fee sundaes from Princess ' onboard ice cream shops. They all have Italian-themed names; The Godfather is one of the best I've ever had anywhere and probably the best I've had on a ship.

The mixture of brownies, vanilla gelato and chocolate sauce is excellent. It comes in a tall ice cream glass that's adorned with chocolate and sprinkles.

It also usually comes with tuile (a baked wafer), but none was left when I ordered, so the woman making my sundae replaced it with caramel popcorn. She also threw in a rainbow swirl lollipop for effect — something that normally comes with The Michelangelo sundae sold there.

If you want something less heavy or you're trying to stick to your budget, ask for a free cone of soft serve instead.

Soft-serve cones from Swirls, Carnival Cruise Line

ice cream cruise schedule

Where to find it: All ships in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet

TPG take: There's something special about the ability to have ice cream any time of the day, and Carnival delivers in a big way. There's nothing fancy about Swirls, the line's giant stainless-steel self-service ice cream and frozen yogurt machines, but what it dispenses is delicious.

Choose either a cup or a cone, and pull the lever for do-it-yourself soft-serve. Two of three flavors — chocolate, vanilla and strawberry — are generally offered at any given time, along with an option that twists two of them together. You can't beat the complimentary price or the 24-hour availability. You won't find toppings by the soft-serve machines, but keep a stash of cookies or Froot Loops from the buffet to crush onto your cone for a creative concoction.

Bottom line

So, which particular ice cream is my favorite?

My vote goes squarely to the cookies and cream at Royal Caribbean's Cups & Scoops. Despite what it might look like above, I'm more a fan of cones than of ice cream. As far as I'm concerned, the latter is just an accompaniment to add a bit of moisture to the crunch. The combo of a cone with cookies and sprinkles is a no-brainer for me.

Russian Tours and Cruises from Express to Russia

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • Completed in 2017

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.
