Best of North And South India Tour

Best of North And South India

We enjoyed our trip to India very much, we were glad that we continued to the southern part of India and didn't just leave our trip strictly to the northern part. We were sorry that some of our travelling friends in the North, weren't able to continue to the South, because we couldn't believe we were in the same country when we arrived in the South. Being able to do both areas gave us a good flavour of India! Both of our guides in the north and south were excellent and certainly did everything in their power to give us a good trip! We felt very safe and they never left our sides. In the North, we had Mahipal and in the South we had Harsha. As for the organization of the trip, Indus Travels were all very good and everywhere we went, everything was organized and on time! We would definitely recommend Indus Travels to our friends if they showed an interest in visiting India.

Best Of Peru Tour

At this time, I am going to give a synopsis of our drivers and guides. Let me lead off by saying all the guides we had were knowledgeable and catered to our needs. Kudos to Indus Travel for using them. They made sure that the members of the group were accommodated as far as comfort during our excursions. They made sure we had plenty of water to stay hydrated. Every time we entered or exited the bus they provided two bottles each of cold water. 1. All the guides were knowledgeable and attentive to the - groups needs. They assured that we all experienced the same information. 2. Transfer from Lima Airport to Sonesta Hotel, August 14 – Melissa and driver were right there to collect us and drive us the 45 minutes to our hotel. She provided us with some history of Lima and made sure we got checked into the hotel. 3. Transfer from Sonesta Hotel to Lima Airport, August 15 – Bruno was there to get us to the airport at 445am. He escorted us to the Latam desk and made sure we got checked in. If it weren’t for him, we may not have been able to board 4. Ollantaytambo ruins and Cusco City Tour – Wilda – was extremely knowledgeable in the Incan civilization. She accommodated the group in allowing some to climb the terraces and led the remainder on a tour around the ground floor. In Cusco, she led us through all the churches explaining how the Spanish had built the churches on the top of the Incan temples. 5. Machu Picchu – Luis picked us up at the hotel and made sure we got our train tickets and got on the right train. Jackeline met us at the train and guided us through the entrance process and then proceeded to lead us through the ruins. She accommodated a couple of the group that could only make it to the first level while getting the rest of the group to the top and then having us understand that the name was for the mountain (meaning old mountain). 6. Dinner at Tunupa – Guide was Alan and he was gracious enough to walk slowly to accommodate a few of the group as we had done a couple of miles already. The route to the restaurant was three city blocks STRAIGHT UPHILL. It was the same route we took earlier in the day for the tour. Alan assured that we were seated at the restaurant and promptly left us. 7. Hotel to airport for flight to Lima. Again, two of us flew Latam while the remainder of the group flew Avianca. 8. Airport to Hotel in Lima – 9. City tour and ruins – Julia led us through the city (two monasteries and through the central square) and through the Inca city of Saqsawwaman, more like the Egyptian pyramids but bigger. The worlds largest stone is located at this spot (something like 200 tons). We also visited Q’enco, Pukapukara and Tambomachmay. Again, Julia was most informative Dinner at Hualana - Pepe took us to dinner and since one of our group was sick, we asked him to join us. He regaled us with tales of his many experiences as a tour guide. Hotels – Sonesta Hotels are really fantastic. I again will commend Indus Travels for using these hotels. All Lima and Cusco hotels were close to the center of town and easy walking to the central markets and dining (when on our own). Excursions – Not much to add here, but we were exposed to lots of the history of Peru and proof of Peru’s gastronomical reputation. The tours were extraordinary, especially Machu Picchu (of course that’s what we came to see). Food was excellent, but buffets get tiresome. Our (Cindy and I) favorite was the sit down at Huana Pullana.

Picturesque Solo Costa Rica Tour

It was a good solo travel trip. BUT plan ahead. INDUS drops you off at hotel and then you are on your own in SAN Jose. We did get a map museums were closed on MOnday. research things to do, It can be extremely helpful to start researching your destination before you travel. Find out information about the city you are traveling to along with the area you will be staying in, so you can discover which stores and restaurants will be close by, get to know your way around the neighborhood, and familiarize yourself with attractions you want to see. Your journey will go smoother if you come prepared with ideas — and it will be a fascinating experience to see them come to life! The shuttle drivers were usually on time. Sunday was a busy travel day from Manuel Antonio hotel Tabula tree back to SAN JOSE PARK INN so beware of that. bus driver was late due to traffic almost an hour.

Majestic India And Nepal

We had an amazing and memorable two person trip through India and Nepal. We had an excellent guide and driver in India from Delhi to Udaipur stopping at five cities and visiting incredible sites. Then we flew to Katmandu, with the most knowledgeable city guide ever, followed by traveling to the Chitwan jungle with tours led by a local naturalist who knew every animal and flower. It was a very personal and well planned trip that I would highly recommend.

Reviews of Indus Travels Tours

Indus Travel amazed me. I have traveled before with other tour companies and I have to say that the organization of Indus Travel was really neat. I received ahead of the trip the schedule of what to expect with times a locations. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice. The hotel was picked with care and we got a great hotel that went beyond our expectations. The airline selected was one of the best ones and the price of the trips were convenient.
My wife and I along with three friends signed up the tour to Mexico from Indus Travel. The total 12-day Maya Culture trip really gave us opportunities to learn Mexico indigenous cultures thoroughly. We have seen a lot of ruins and pyramids, each of them has different representations and can tell the history of what was happening atthat time. We also had chances to visit the indigenous families toexperence the real Mexican people's life inthe rural area. The views of volcanoes, villages and canyons are also unforgettable. This is a small group with total 7 tourists, our driver/tour guide is a very experienced guide, Jose explained the history in sequence of events in and out. Most of all with 2500km driving he made us fell safe with his skills. All in all, this trip worths a 5+ star. I was so surprised that Indus Travel assigned a tour coordinator dedicated to our group, Kathlene helped a lot to make the arrangements for the whole trip, her prompt responses made us worry free.

Even though our schedule was…

Even though our schedule was jam-packed, we saw quite a bit of Spain. Wonderful was our tour manager. Under her watchful eye, we remained on track and received excellent treatment. Particularly when dealing with smaller concerns, she was of great assistance. Due to her, the whole thing was fantastic. Superb were all of the local tour guides. We gained a wealth of knowledge regarding the heritage and past of the places we experienced. This trip to Spain with Indus is fantastic.

Thanks to Indus

Thanks to Indus, our trips to Egypt and Dubai were amazing. Excellent, well-organized, informed, and kind tour guide. We saw everything on our itinerary, and Indus did a great job with the services they offered. Excellent work!

Jeremy, the leader of Indus Travels, was really professional, and the trip was well-organized; I just returned from Africa. The game drives in Chobe and Entabeni were our favorites, although we loved everything about our trip from Cape Town onwards. With only sixteen people, the group was just right, and everyone got along great. October was the perfect time to go outside. Taking this excursion is something we wholeheartedly endorse.

Our amazing Scandinavia holiday ended…

Our amazing Scandinavia holiday ended in Bergen, Norway. Danish and Norwegian beauty shocked us. No traveler should miss Copenhagen's magical ambiance, rich attractions, and remarkable experiences like the Tivoli Gardens. Our visit to Bergen, Norway, felt like a storybook due to its beauty and connection to troll and Viking folklore.

Visiting Ireland was an incredible adventure. Excellent lodgings with a warm, welcoming, and culturally significant vibe. Quite a few unexpectedly delicious supper options. We had a blast with all of the planned activities. Thank you to everyone on the bus, the tour leader, the local guides, and everyone else on board. This tour and Indus Travels are both highly recommended by me.

Great last minute trip through the Imperial cities with Indus. Our river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest had been cancelled due to low water levels so this trip with Indus was very last minute. Many thanks to Monica from Indus for organising everything for us with such short notice.

A really well organised trip with very good guides in Japan. From the outset the communication from Indus was excellent. We loved the "Indus app" that gave us al the info we needed for our trip. We were fortunate that we had a small group of 12 people only so we had a wonderful one on one experience with each of our guides in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.

My trip with Indus around Japan's top

My trip with Indus around Japan's top attractions is now over. Staying in luxurious accommodations and being escorted to different locations was a wonderful perk despite the hectic pace of Japan. Every major cultural and geographical landmark in Japan was visited during the journey. Both structured activities and unstructured time were well-balanced. If you are considering a vacation to Japan, I highly recommend this tour.

Norway was a beautiful country

Norway was a beautiful country, and the pace of the Magic of Norwegian Fjords tour was fine. Although the guide kept quoting all costs in American Dollars or Euro; Norwegian the currency is Krone. It became rather frustrating to be converting from Euro/USD. The accommodation was clean, though the rooms were extremely small, they did provide some spectacular views! The coach was very full so that part was little disappointing. Now that I am home and reviewing the photos, I can appreciate what an awe-inspiring country Norway really is. Absolutely include Norway on your tour list and go with Indus.

Unforgettable Ireland with Indus was perfect small group tour of 20 people covering Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Donegal, Galway, Killarney, Kilkenny and lots in between. The tour was very well paced with plenty of activities balanced with free time. Hotels, food, scenery, culture, history, fun, all amazing. Brilliant tour guide Kevin with loads of local knowledge.

We do not normally travel with guided tours but myself and my wife decided to try it for this Africa trip due to lack of planning time. This was such a good experience! Monica with Indus was very helpful in guiding us through our booking process and helping us prepare for the trip. Our tour manager Tony was very knowledgeable and really cared about everybody on the tour having a great experience in his country. Our tour group only had 14 people in it, and we were all a little family by the end of our 2 weeks together. The hotels were very nice, the food was good, and the wildlife was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend Indus Travels to anyone considering it!

Taste of Portugal tour was just the…

Taste of Portugal tour was just the right amount of time, with adequate time to do your own thing plus interesting and well planned activities. The number of the participants was also really good - about 15 of us so we got to know most people over the 7 days. One thing I was disappointed with was that even though the tour says it was for 8 days it really in essence was only 7, as day 1 was nothing, just checking in to the hotel for the evening. So I think it is a bit misleading to call it a 8 day tour. The hotels were all of a very good standard and in good locations.

Truly breathtaking sightseeing on Best

Truly breathtaking sightseeing on Best of Peru, Argentina & Brazil tour! We visited all 3 countries - Peru, Argentina and Brazil. The planning and logistics involved to get us to the next destination must have been phenomenal. All went smoothly. We have done many trips in the past and we were extremely impressed with Indus and their local agents. Would travel again with Indus, in fact, look forward to doing so again soon. The countries we visited were very interesting and quite different from each other which made it more fascinating to see them. A special thank you to Rachel at Indus for providing us great service and assistance.

Indus is a company you want to avoid

Indus is a company you want to avoid. They are not honest at all. When a company will not share information, you must wonder why. They are a travel agency not the company that provides the tour. They will not even tell you the name of the company you will be travelling with. The only reason they have a BBB rating is because BBB only rates according to the time the company takes to respond to a complaint. the issues are never resolved to the clients satisfaction. Be smart and learn from others misfortune.

This company should not be in business

This company should not be in business, unfortunately, they will continue their bad practices as long as people can be duped. I and a friend unfortunately booked with them ( I trusted my friend). I should have looked for reviews on this company before booking. It was supposed to be a London & Scotland tour including a visit to Stonehenge & Bath. Stonehenge & Bath never happened. The tour guides explanation was simply “no we’re not going to do that”. The tour guide was lazy, she had no knowledge of the places we did visit by a non-luxury coach bus with dirty windows. There was soooooo many things wrong with this trip it would take to long to write. I hope people start reading these reviews to save themselves a headache and lost money.

BUYER BEWARE!!

BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep.

It's with great sadness ,I will never go back

Well it is with great sadness I leave this review , I have gone to indus 20 years plus , my son has as well. I even recommended this place to friends . No more went today ordered a chicken curry ,I got a burger as well. The curry smelt like poo or horse manure, terrible . My son said dad is this normal. He was so disappointed .he's a local lad grew up there ordered many times before. With regret the family running it now have let the standards drop badly . Seems the old man was the back bone of this business . Would not bother ordering from indus, highly disappointing. There is no way you can cook a dish in 2 minutes . Old chicken being used from previous days . Food poisoning alert.

A shameful company

DO NOT USE Travel Indus for traveling. It is a deceptive company. I live in Sarasota, Florida and was supposed to fly to Europe the same day that Category 4 hurricane Ian hit us. Indus Travel said it was fine for us to travel. The hurricane was catastrophic; many lost their homes due to the winds and flooding and we lost water, power and Wi-Fi for over a week in addition to minor damage. We were required to evacuate and sheltered with all roads closed during the hurricane. Even our main Florida highway was flooded. I asked Travel Indus to postpone our trip. They refused. They could care less about us losing our lives and completely ignored our multiple requests to postpone the trip. I contacted them 12 times in 1 week and received no help. This company is disgraceful and shouldn’t be doing travel business.

Date of experience : September 29, 2022

Reply from Indus Travels

We really appreciate how frustrating this must all have been for you and we certainly empathise with your situation and that of all Floridians affected by the recent hurricane. You contacted us numerous times in the lead up to your trip and we explained each time that Miami International Airport was not closed and that the flight booked on was still scheduled to operate; that this could change at a moments notice and should that happen we could then review what options the airline would provide as alternative travel plans. This occurred with a few of the airports in Florida but not with Miami International; which stayed open. We suggested that if you had travel insurance (it was not purchased through us), that you should contact them immediately to open a claim. We did not tell you to travel; we simply advised that all services were scheduled to depart as originally booked. We understand that your circumstances warranted that you should stay put and not travel, however as per our terms and conditions the tour would be considered non refundable/non transferrable. We have clients with medical emergencies or other urgent reasons that must also cancel last minute and as much as we empathise with their situations too, we must follow our terms & conditions for all our clients regardless of how we may feel personally. The main reason that we get our valued clients like yourself to agree to the terms and conditions at the time of booking is because we also agree to stringent terms with our tour and airline partners. This is why we offer travel insurance at the time of booking. Travel Insurance is meant to cover one for the what ifs, the unknowns that can happen prior to or during travel.

indus travel africa

We are considering a trip to South Africa using Indus Tours . Has anyone had any

experience with this company. Planning on going Feb or March 2014. Thanks

for your help.

Please let me know if you went; we are looking at going with them as well on 12 Day Discover South Africa and Victoria Falls

indus travel africa

Although I have not been on a South Africa trip with Indus but we were on their small group tour to India. I can tell you that it was one of the best trips we have ever taken. The local guide in India really made the trip exceptional. We had very good hotels almost 5 star level. Me and my wife are booked on their South Africa & Vic falls trip for Feb 2014 departure and am really looking forward to it.

Just returned from South Africa on a private tour with Indus Travels. Will definitely recommend this company for South Africa. They know what they are doing. We were not sure about some lodges/game parks but were matched with our requirements. I worked with Tracy at Indus who is South Africa specialist.

Thank you for the reply, Mike; good to know!

' class=

Hope we do hear from Barb, we are looking at the 12 day South Africa trip w/Victoria Falls, as well.

I see Indus is promoting through Jet setter.. how was your trip with them?

Discover South Africa Tour by indus.travel Sep 18-Sep 28, 2014 - Review

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The trip overall was great! However 3 serious issues and 1 minor:

- Indus.travel advertised the deal as a game drive through a Kruger National park, but we received a private safary game with transplated animals ( e.g. the owner bought the rinos for US $25,000 each) without having all Big Fives in place. Kwa Madwalla is a small 4,000 hectares game that is not populated with buffalos (one of Big 5), The lodge location is 20 minutes drive to Malelane Gate of the National Kruger Park and even not adjacent to the park. So, Indus.travel has not delivered what was promised de facto. In the circumstances of being in the lodge with the wild animals around it was not possible to organize the trip to Kruger National Park on our own.

TravelZoo.com who referred me to indus.travel to get the trip also needs to be informed about the misleading.

- Visiting of Victoria Falls on Zambian side only as planned by Indus.travel in the dry season ( September ) was disappointing as almost all water from Zambezi River flows on Zimbabwe's side of the falls and the observation is very limited from Zambia. We live in Toronto, Canada, 1.5 drive to Niagara Falls and we can compair the amount of water how it looks like all year around.

In order to correct the bad trip planning by indus.travel we paid US $350 for the microlight adventure in order to see the falls from the air:

http://www.seasonsinafrica.com/adventure-activities-zambia/victoria-falls-activities/livingstones-adventure/batoka-sky-microlights/

- Optional Johannesburg tour that was mentioned by indus.travel was not possible as the drive from Kruger Area to Johannesburg takes 7 hours one way. Within the timelines we barely could make for the dinner at Misty Hills Country Hotel, Johannesburg.

The tour of Johannesburg is not optional, it is simply impossible.

- David Livinstone Safari Lodge charged us Park Entrance Fee ( about $30 CAN x 2 ) and ZAWA Levy ( about $30 CAN x 1 )

that was supposted to be covered by indus.travel

This post has been removed at the author's request.

had a very different experience.

Aside from your disappointment in the things outlined - were you happy with the arrangements /hotels /tours/food by Indus? I am looking at going on the same trip. My understanding is that the private game reserves are better than the main Kruger park and the itinerary clearly states that it is a private reserve. Did you not enjoy the safari or see animals?

Editoral Review of Indus Travels

Canadian based Indus Travel offers budget friendly tours around the world for everyone from adventurous travelers to families. Their mission is t o offer quality tours at affordable prices while providing outstanding service to their clients and to earn their loyalty & operate their travel business in an environmentally responsible, ethical and sustainable way.

What Makes Indus Travel Stand Out?

  • customizable itineraries
  • use of travel planners and local experts to help design your trip
  • balance between sightseeing and local immersion

Their most popular tour offering is what they term “Unbundled Tours” where you book a group trip - meaning better price, but have the power to then customize your experience along the way. Not everyone may want to see xyz, so their itinerary structure allows everyone to tailor their travel experience. And it helps you choose those experiences, accommodations, meals etc that are within your price range.

This does mean you’re dependent on the Indus guides on the ground handling a lot of complicated individual schedules effectively. Indus reviews indicate that this isn’t always a smooth ride, and often confusions arise both on the part of the traveler and the Indus organizers.

Indus travel planners are available to help you design an ultra customized journey, using local experts. If you’re looking for something classic and cultural on a budget, they are a great choice. They strive to create balanced itineraries that include classic sightseeing as well as unique and authentic stops.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Indus?

  • Budget travelers
  • Travelers looking for options and flexibility

Budget travelers looking for an exciting group trip, but with the flexibility to “choose your own adventure”. Group sizes are kept small and they are popular with couples and small family groups.

This style of group travel doesn’t always go smoothly however, so you’ll enjoy the experience more if you have an opened minded attitude and are ok with occasional changes on the ground.

Indus crafts travel experiences with cost efficiency in mind, so if you’re expecting something more premium, Indus might not be for you.

Top Destinations

They organize trips around the world; top custom tour destinations include India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Dubai, Peru. Excursions in destination depend largely on what you and your travel companions decide you want to see and do.

Indus Travel Style

The Indus travel style is about combining the best of independent travel with packaged travel. They will help arrange flights and accommodations, and your input creates a curated experience for your meals and activities.

A girl peaking her head out from a train

Hotels are usually in the 3 star range. They use a combination of public transportation such as ferries, trains, and buses, as well as their own coaches. These are comfortable, but usually with few upscale amenities.

The max number of people on their tours is 22 according to the website, however be forewarned that several reviews state they had over 30 people on their tour. If group size is a very important factor for you when selecting a tour, you might want to consider looking around before deciding on Indus.

Why Choose a Tour With Indus?

If you are a budget traveler interested in a cost cutting travel solution, Indus is a great choice. Because they are specifically designed to be budget friendly, this does mean you might have to put up with some quirks along the way, so an easy-going attitude is good to have if choosing Indus.

While their sales and customer service teams have some negative reviews, their guides on the ground are generally found to be knowledgeable and helpful.

A 3D rendering of dark solar panels and wind turbines alongside a modular battery energy storage system

Salt, air and bricks: could this be the future of energy storage?

Start-ups turn to heat over batteries as they aim to industrialise the practice

T hink of battery ingredients and lithium, cadmium and nickel come to mind. Now think again. What about salt, air, bricks, and hand-warmer gel? In our electricity-hungry future they’re set to provide heat to manufacturers who need it, and to help keep the lights on at times when energy is short.

Energy storage has a dual purpose: it plugs gaps when the wind drops or the sun stops shining, and it allows users to buy cheap off-peak power and use it when they need it.

Until now, the focus of storage for industry has been mainly on giant conventional batteries, which the UK’s National Grid hopes to hook up to the grid more quickly amid delays. But there’s growing interest in storing energy in the form of heat – and that’s where the everyday ingredients such as air, salt and bricks come into the picture, because these materials are really good at holding warmth. A clutch of start-ups are now aiming to industrialise the practice.

Heat storage is coming up the agenda: last month a Lords committee urged the government to take energy storage more seriously, and this month a conference run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) will hear the case for thermal batteries.

Heat provides more than half the total energy demanded by industry, but IMEchE says electric batteries and hydrogen have hogged the limelight, to the neglect of simple systems storing heat. One featured technology at the meeting will be the Heatcube, developed by a Norwegian firm, Kyoto Group. It comes in the form of tanks filled with salt, installed at the site where the heat is needed.

Heatcube’s vertical salt tanks are charged by electricity during periods of low cost. Molten salt is particularly good at holding heat at temperatures up to 500C.

From his office by the Oslo fjord, Kyoto’s chief technology officer, Bjarke Buchbjerg, says: “With all the excitement about battery technology for electric vehicles, people have forgotten about the massive demand for heat for industries that can’t be produced from electrical batteries. Industrial heat is a big deal – we can’t afford to ignore it.”

One of Kyoto’s main shareholders is the Spanish giant Iberdrola. Spain has more than a decade of experience using molten salt to store heat to be discharged at sunset to create steam that makes electricity overnight. Iberdrola’s head of industrial decarbonisation, Fernando Mateo, described energy storage as “one of the major challenges in the energy transition”.

Another young firm using salt is Massachusetts-based Malta, incubated at X, the tech accelerator started by Google (now Alphabet). The firm said the system is intended to complement, rather than compete with other energy storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen to provide a “missing piece” for the global transition to clean energy. Its main focus is on back-up power generation.

Unlike much sought-after electrical battery components , salt is widely dispersed, easily extracted and able to store heat with minimal degradation or toxic by-products. It is estimated that the salt tanks can be re-charged thousands of times for up to 40 years – at least three times longer than other current storage options.

Dr Robert Barthorpe from Sheffield University, who studies storage options, says: “Molten salt is going to be an important part of the energy mix. It’s a fantastic technology, offering high temperatures at industrial scale.”

Indeed, a California firm, Rondo, claims that its heat battery made from a pile of bricks can store energy at half the cost of green hydrogen and chemical batteries. Its system collects renewable energy and turns it into heat using electrical elements similar to those used in toasters. The firm says these bricks can be heated to 1,500C and are capable of storing energy for days with less than a 1% loss per day.

East Lothian’s Sunamp has received £9.25m in government funding to trial an advanced system in 100 homes across the UK. Its technology relies on storing heat and cold in a phase-change material similar to the gel used in pocket hand-warmers. The firm claims that its patented Plentigrade is four times more efficient at storing heat in tanks of water, allowing it to use a much smaller tank.

In the UK, firms are also turning to compressed air to store energy. Another system, using super-cooled liquid air, was devised by a back-yard inventor in Hertfordshire, Peter Dearman. The company that bought his innovation is Highview Power, which has begun work on a 300MWh facility near Manchester said to store enough power for roughly 50,000 homes for five hours. “We need many different forms of energy storage – and I’m confident liquid air will be one of them,” Dearman says.

Highview has teamed with the energy company Ørsted to investigate how to combine storage with wind energy.

The two companies say the technology can help to reduce curtailment – when wind power owners are paid to switch off their generators to balance the grid – as well as increase productivity, and help the move to a more flexible, resilient zero-carbon grid.

Another firm using compressed air, Cheesecake Energy , employs an electric motor to drive an air compressor which creates high-pressure air, and heat. The battery can then be discharged by running the process in reverse to create electricity.

Other heat battery firms include the Norwegian company EnergyNest, which heats a specially formulated concrete , and Germany’s Lumenion, which stores energy in steel modules up to 650C.

Recent comments by Greg Hands, the former energy and climate change minister, offer hope to the nascent industry. “Driving forward energy storage technologies will be vital in our transition towards cheap, clean and secure renewable energy,” he said.

A 2022 report from the consultancy firm McKinsey highlights the advantages of thermal storage, calculating a price of $65-$100 (£51-£79) a megawatt hour to produce steam heat from hydrogen; $45-$55 for gas with carbon capture and storage; and just $15-$25 for a heat pump with thermal storage.

The report warns of potential challenges for thermal batteries – chiefly because they are little-known by policymakers. Beyond that, there remain potential commercial risks arising from the relative novelty of the industry and the varying maturity of different technologies, given that businesses often have expensive, drawn-out investment cycles.

Its report calls for business leaders to invest in pilots and demonstration plants to create awareness and showcase heat technologies.

Ultimately, with the pressure on to hold down carbon emissions as fast as possible, heat storage start-ups may lose out if the easiest route appears to be to turn to established technologies.

This article was amended on 4 April 2024. EnergyNest is a Norwegian company, not Swiss as stated in an earlier version; and the facility being developed by Highview Power near Manchester will have a storage capacity of 300MWh, not “250MW”.

Roger Harrabin is an honorary fellow at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge and a former BBC correspondent.
